:00:09. > :00:11.This is BBC World News Today, broadcasting in the UK

:00:12. > :00:17.Phase two of the operation to retake the city of Mosul gets under way.

:00:18. > :00:23.It's the last stronghold of so-called Islamic State in Iraq.

:00:24. > :00:25.Iraqi forces say they've captured several villages as thousands

:00:26. > :00:28.of troops advance on the western half of the city.

:00:29. > :00:50.I'm now above the village and they are about to do smarter it strikes.

:00:51. > :00:53.You look at what happened last night in Sweden. Sweden?

:00:54. > :00:55.Sweden asks for clarification after the US President refers

:00:56. > :00:57.to an apparent terror attack there, which never happened.

:00:58. > :01:00.The American company, Kraft Heinz, withdraws its proposed takeover

:01:01. > :01:14.A SpaceX rocket successfully blasts off from the historic Cape Canaveral

:01:15. > :01:26.launchpad used for the moon landings half a century ago.

:01:27. > :01:33.Iraqi government forces are making significant progress

:01:34. > :01:37.after stepping up their offensive against the Islamic State group

:01:38. > :01:39.in the city of Mosul - hundreds of armoured vehicles

:01:40. > :01:45.and thousands of men are involved in the operation.

:01:46. > :01:48.The battle could see Iraqi forces denting the militant group's hold

:01:49. > :01:52.across parts of northern and western Iraq that were seized two years ago.

:01:53. > :01:55.Last month the government won back the eastern part of the city

:01:56. > :01:58.and the advances of the last 12 hours or so take them within

:01:59. > :02:04.Fears have been voiced about the safety of thousands

:02:05. > :02:09.The BBC's correspondent Quentin Sommerville

:02:10. > :02:22.is with the Iraqi army and sent this report.

:02:23. > :02:25.Just after sunrise, Iraq began what it hopes is its last major

:02:26. > :02:30.battle against the so-called Islamic State.

:02:31. > :02:32.Thousands of men and hundreds of armoured vehicles in a line

:02:33. > :02:39.The Iraqi army are starting their assault on Western Mosul.

:02:40. > :02:41.They have reached their own defences.

:02:42. > :02:44.Armoured vehicles are lining up, getting ready for the Islamic State.

:02:45. > :02:47.They are only a couple of kilometres over that way,

:02:48. > :02:59.They are dug in, the assault in Western Mosul has started.

:03:00. > :03:01.Leading the attack, Iraq's emergency response division,

:03:02. > :03:07.Some of these men were surrounded by IS two years ago.

:03:08. > :03:11.Today, they threw everything they had at IS.

:03:12. > :03:29.We are now above the village which is their main target.

:03:30. > :03:44.They are about to call in some artillery strikes.

:03:45. > :03:47.The captain tells me there are three IS fighters in a yellow building

:03:48. > :03:53.down there and car bombs were targeting them now.

:03:54. > :03:55.There were four car bombs in total, but soon government

:03:56. > :04:04.They killed 13 IS fighters without taking any casualties.

:04:05. > :04:15.This village is small, but it's important, it's

:04:16. > :04:18.the gateway to Mosul proper and the city's airport.

:04:19. > :04:20.Hidden inside another house, away from surveillance aircraft,

:04:21. > :04:24.another car bomb disguised as an ambulance.

:04:25. > :04:34.In these streets, though, a critical advantage - no civilians.

:04:35. > :04:36.In western Mosul there are three quarters of a million people

:04:37. > :04:43.It took these men just six hours to take this village.

:04:44. > :04:47.They made good progress but with overwhelming force.

:04:48. > :04:50.Beyond here is another town and another village.

:04:51. > :04:54.That town overlooks Mosul Airport and the city itself.

:04:55. > :05:07.From here on in, the going will not be nearly so fast.

:05:08. > :05:14.As we have heard, eastern Mosul was liberated by government forces two

:05:15. > :05:20.months ago, we got this view on life in that part of the city. The long

:05:21. > :05:24.awaited operation to take the western side of most was happening,

:05:25. > :05:28.in this side there is mixed feelings about people who are happy about the

:05:29. > :05:35.news of the operation. Suicide attacks took place. And this year 's

:05:36. > :05:43.presence has been increased, however that has not stopped people from

:05:44. > :05:48.coming out to the market. We're so happy that our brothers in the Iraqi

:05:49. > :05:52.army are liberating our brothers in the West. The Westerners had been

:05:53. > :05:56.heard by the tragedies of IS. They have really suffered from hunger and

:05:57. > :06:02.thirst. So we are so happy about the start of the operation. Thank God we

:06:03. > :06:08.are in high-spirited and there is good relationship between Mr G

:06:09. > :06:09.forces and the people, we feel safe, God willing things will be stable

:06:10. > :06:14.soon. A senior member of the new US

:06:15. > :06:16.administration has distanced himself from Donald Trump's assessment

:06:17. > :06:18.of the media as "the The President made

:06:19. > :06:21.the comments during a rally on Saturday in Florida -

:06:22. > :06:23.but his Defense Secretary, James Mattis, had this to say

:06:24. > :06:27.when he was asked what he thought I've had some rather contentious

:06:28. > :06:33.times with the press, but no, the press as far as I'm concerned

:06:34. > :06:40.are a constituency that we deal with, and I don't have any issues

:06:41. > :06:45.with the press myself. Mr Mattis is not the only

:06:46. > :06:48.Republican to speak out Senator John Mccain told the NBC

:06:49. > :06:52.programme 'meet the press' that attacking the media had overtones

:06:53. > :06:57.of dictatorship... If you want to preserve

:06:58. > :07:03.democracy as we know it, you have to have a free and many

:07:04. > :07:06.times adversial press, and without it, I'm afraid

:07:07. > :07:08.that we would lose so much of our individual

:07:09. > :07:10.liberties over time. That is how dictators get started,

:07:11. > :07:19.with tweets like that? With - no, they get started

:07:20. > :07:24.by suppressing a free press. In other words,

:07:25. > :07:27.a consolidation of power. When you look at history,

:07:28. > :07:30.the first thing that dictators do is shut down the press,

:07:31. > :07:33.I'm not saying that President Trump is trying to be a dictator,

:07:34. > :07:36.I'm just saying we need to learn Let's go live to

:07:37. > :07:41.Washington and speak to our correspondent -

:07:42. > :07:52.David Willis. There is little sign that he's

:07:53. > :07:56.trying to censor the press but he's certainly trying to discredit it and

:07:57. > :08:00.in turn led Subasic we have got the media fighting back against that,

:08:01. > :08:04.and catching him out if and when they can. How is that viewed in

:08:05. > :08:09.America, in a country that according to recent polls doesn't trust the

:08:10. > :08:14.press anyway. That is a good point Chris, what we have had from

:08:15. > :08:19.President Trump over the last few days, is increasing bellicosity if

:08:20. > :08:24.that is the right word, towards the mass media. He went on Twitter the

:08:25. > :08:28.other day, to say that they were the enemy of the American people. That

:08:29. > :08:33.is strong stuff, it is going a lot further than he has gone in the

:08:34. > :08:39.past. Body clearly does believe that the media has misrepresented his

:08:40. > :08:42.first month in office, there have of course been protests. There have

:08:43. > :08:47.been problems though the administration links to Russia, has

:08:48. > :08:51.been the resignation of General Mike Flynn, the National security

:08:52. > :08:56.adviser. But President Trump believes it is all going swimmingly

:08:57. > :09:01.and that is why, he went on the campaign trail. Last night, going to

:09:02. > :09:08.Florida, giving that speech, as if he was campaigning for office, he

:09:09. > :09:11.says he is campaigning for office in 2020. This is because he can

:09:12. > :09:15.circumvent the mass media at gatherings like that, he can get his

:09:16. > :09:20.message directly to the people who act should put him in the White

:09:21. > :09:25.House. Let's just talk about Sweden if we can, the comments that he made

:09:26. > :09:29.about Sweden in Florida, at that rally. Any response from the White

:09:30. > :09:36.House or any of the governmental departments to Sweden's request for

:09:37. > :09:39.some clarification. Not yet, this is very interesting because this is

:09:40. > :09:44.something that came up at that rally in Florida last night. He was

:09:45. > :09:49.talking about immigration controls, one of his pet subject and he talked

:09:50. > :09:57.about open borders in Europe and how they had led to terrorist attacks,

:09:58. > :10:02.and he cited attacks in Paris, Nice, Brussels, and only the day before in

:10:03. > :10:07.Sweden. He said. You look at what is happening last night in Sweden, who

:10:08. > :10:11.would believe this? Sweden. Well Sweden didn't believe it because it

:10:12. > :10:16.was pretty quiet on Friday night in Sweden by all accounts. The most

:10:17. > :10:19.ulcers thing going on by all accounts, was a contest to narrow

:10:20. > :10:26.down who would represent Sweden in Eurovision Song contest. That has

:10:27. > :10:31.prompted the Swedish Embassy in Washington to ask the State

:10:32. > :10:35.Department to please explain what on earth the president was talking

:10:36. > :10:45.about. And as soon as you get a response, we will bring it to you in

:10:46. > :10:47.Sweden and I look forward to that. Let's have a look at other

:10:48. > :10:48.developments around the world. Russian opposition activist,

:10:49. > :10:50.Vladimir Kara Murza, has left the country after spending

:10:51. > :10:53.more than two weeks in a critical Medical discharge papers said

:10:54. > :11:00.he was suffering from the effects He has flown out of Russia

:11:01. > :11:05.accompanied by his wife and a medic, A policeman has been killed

:11:06. > :11:12.in an explosion near the bullring Police had been deployed ahead

:11:13. > :11:16.of expected protests by animal The bullring reopened last month,

:11:17. > :11:21.four years after being closed Zimbabwe's president

:11:22. > :11:28.Robert Mugabe says both the governing party,

:11:29. > :11:32.ZANU-PF, and the country's people see no viable successor to him

:11:33. > :11:35.in next year's elections. Mr Mugabe - who turns 93 on Tuesday

:11:36. > :11:38.- has been in power since 1980. His wife says he's so popular

:11:39. > :11:41.voters would support him Malaysian police are hunting

:11:42. > :11:50.for at least four more suspects in the death of Kim Jong-nam,

:11:51. > :11:53.the half brother of in the death of Kim Jong-nam,

:11:54. > :12:11.the half brother of He died on Monday after

:12:12. > :12:14.apparently being poisoned Four people have already been

:12:15. > :12:17.arrested over the death but many questions remain unanswered,

:12:18. > :12:19.including what will The assasination of this man

:12:20. > :12:23.appears to have involved Four have already been detained

:12:24. > :12:27.in the poisoning of Kim Jong-nam, including a woman holding

:12:28. > :12:29.a Vietnamese passport who could be this person from the crime scene,

:12:30. > :12:32.and this woman who says She says she thought

:12:33. > :12:36.she was on a television prank show. One North Korean citizen

:12:37. > :12:39.is in custody, thought to be the man And now the authorities have asked

:12:40. > :12:45.for Interpol's help to find at least four more North Koreans,

:12:46. > :12:48.who all entered and exited Malaysia I can confirm today they have

:12:49. > :12:52.left our country the very same day People of interest who might

:12:53. > :12:59.know how Kim Jong-nam's Four suspects has been identified,

:13:00. > :13:07.which could assist us very much Still the question of

:13:08. > :13:11.what will be done with. Malaysian law requires his

:13:12. > :13:20.family to come in person If still they don't come forward,

:13:21. > :13:33.we have to look for the next option. It is unclear whether Mr Kim's

:13:34. > :13:45.children could travel to the morgue Or perhaps the law requires

:13:46. > :13:50.the presence of this man, the victim's half sibling

:13:51. > :13:56.North Korean leader Kim Jong-un. South Korea's unification ministry

:13:57. > :13:59.say they believe Pyongyang orchestrated the poisoning of Kim

:14:00. > :14:03.Jong-nam. The man once poised to rule

:14:04. > :14:06.North Korea before falling out While Kim Jong-nam was alive

:14:07. > :14:12.the thinking goes he remained a threat to his half brother

:14:13. > :14:15.and to Kim Jong-un's fragile grip One of the biggest potential

:14:16. > :14:27.takeover deals in corporate history is NOT going to happen -

:14:28. > :14:30.after the American food giant Kraft-Heinz said

:14:31. > :14:32.it was dropping its bid to buy The Anglo-Dutch company rejected

:14:33. > :14:37.a bid from Kraft on Friday. Now Kraft has said it has 'amicably

:14:38. > :14:42.agreed' to scrap the plan. Our business Correspondent Joe

:14:43. > :14:56.Lynam has been watching Didn't quite turn out how we

:14:57. > :15:00.expected it? I have never seen such a corporate U-turn, I calculate that

:15:01. > :15:04.within 55 hours of the bid being submitted and initially rejected, it

:15:05. > :15:09.has now been withdrawn entirely. This brought together some major

:15:10. > :15:14.Grable brands that you and I know. Such as -- Major global brand. Such

:15:15. > :15:18.as that Adelphia and Heinz baked beans, which is owned by

:15:19. > :15:23.Kraft-Heinz, and that would have brought over marmite and other ones

:15:24. > :15:28.from Unilever to create a huge player. Worth 55 billion. But it is

:15:29. > :15:33.no more, what has happened is that basically it has become very clear

:15:34. > :15:37.that it was never going to work and that Kraft-Heinz would have to

:15:38. > :15:41.launch a hostile takeover bid and that would have cost it an awful lot

:15:42. > :15:45.more money than it was prepared to pay and it wouldn't have made the

:15:46. > :15:50.deal worthwhile and also it wouldn't have been a friendly and amicable

:15:51. > :15:55.divorce. And if you're wondering why we should care, it is not just such

:15:56. > :16:01.a huge takeover bid, a lot of jobs and products at stake? You are

:16:02. > :16:03.rights to mention jobs, there are thousands of people working for

:16:04. > :16:08.Unilever at the moment to breathing a sigh of relief, simply because

:16:09. > :16:14.Craft Heinz is controlled by a Brazilian outfit called the 3G, they

:16:15. > :16:17.have a deserved history for cost-cutting, taking a side to

:16:18. > :16:21.factories and jobs for the companies they take over. They certainly would

:16:22. > :16:24.have run the rule over Unilever factories all over the world saying

:16:25. > :16:28.this one has to go. Stay with us on BBC World News,

:16:29. > :16:31.still to come: A hat-trick from Harry Kane

:16:32. > :16:37.who eases Tottenham Hotspur A full round-up of

:16:38. > :16:58.the action coming up. The army defeated in the task it had

:16:59. > :17:05.been sent to perform at retreating in good order. It had a terrible

:17:06. > :17:20.effect on the morale, and terrified of the repercussions on the streets.

:17:21. > :17:27.As the airlift got underway, there was no letup in the eruption itself,

:17:28. > :17:31.lava streams in the greater flow down to the sea on the east of the

:17:32. > :17:36.island, away from the town at the time being but it could start

:17:37. > :17:40.flowing again had any time. The Russians heralded their new

:17:41. > :17:44.generation space station with a spectacular night launch, they

:17:45. > :17:47.called it, mir, the Russian for peace.

:17:48. > :17:53.Iraqi forces say they've captured several villages

:17:54. > :17:55.in their assault on western Mosul, the last stronghold of so-called

:17:56. > :18:01.Sweden has asked for an explanation from Washington after

:18:02. > :18:04.President Trump spoke of a security incident there,

:18:05. > :18:19.Let's return to our main story - the Iraqi army's renewed

:18:20. > :18:21.offensive to recapture Mosul from the Islamic State group.

:18:22. > :18:24.already played you one report by Quentin Sommerville who's

:18:25. > :18:28.As always, Quentin is also telling the story on Twitter.

:18:29. > :19:12.incredible insight into that assault on Mosul.

:19:13. > :19:15.And you can see those photos on Quentin's twitter account -

:19:16. > :19:18.he is @sommervillebbc - and you can follow him while he's

:19:19. > :19:28.A SpaceX rocket has successfully launched

:19:29. > :19:32.from the Kennedy Space Centre in Florida following a 24-hour

:19:33. > :19:35.delay to replace a mechanical part, known as an 'actuator'.

:19:36. > :19:37.The Falcon 9 rocket was carrying the 12th Dragon

:19:38. > :19:40.spacecraft delivering cargo to the International Space Station.

:19:41. > :19:45.This is the first SpaceX lift off from the Kennedy Space Center -

:19:46. > :19:48.specifically pad 39A, which was the site of the Apollo 11

:19:49. > :20:05.The payload is on its way to the Space Station,

:20:06. > :20:08.but the rocket turned around and touched down on a landing pad.

:20:09. > :20:10.Here's how NASA spokesperson Jessica Jensen summed up the mission.

:20:11. > :20:16.Any time we can get a new pad off the ground, we completely modernise

:20:17. > :20:27.We have run tonnes of tests to ensure that the hold downs

:20:28. > :20:33.back in a different way than it used to on pad 40.

:20:34. > :20:36.We have done tons of ground tests, but we have never made it an actual

:20:37. > :20:38.rocket with a payload on top of that.

:20:39. > :20:41.So to watch that happen for the first time was just amazing.

:20:42. > :20:44.I am sure the team will be out celebrating tonight.

:20:45. > :20:47.As of now we are still watching Dragon and ensuring it is on its way

:20:48. > :20:50.to the space station safely and it still does checkouts

:20:51. > :20:53.But all is looking great, we are not expecting any issues.

:20:54. > :20:59.We'll be out tonight if you want to find us.

:21:00. > :21:05.There will be some heavy drinking sure among some of our footballers.

:21:06. > :21:09.Hello good evening, the draw has been made for the quarter-finals

:21:10. > :21:11.of the FA Cup and Lincoln City - after that giant-killing

:21:12. > :21:14.against Premier League side Burnley yesterday.

:21:15. > :21:16.They could face Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium -

:21:17. > :21:22.IF THEY can beat another non-league side - Sutton United tomorrow...

:21:23. > :21:33.Jose Mourinho and Manchester United return to the scene of a 4-0

:21:34. > :21:35.trouncing earlier this season as they visit Premier League leaders

:21:36. > :21:41.Middlesbrough host the winner of the replay

:21:42. > :21:42.between Championship side Huddersfield and Manchester City.

:21:43. > :21:45.There's another London derby for Spurs, who host Millwall

:21:46. > :21:48.and confirmation of what COULD be in prospect a trip to Sutton

:21:49. > :22:05.end, Ibrahimovic's introduction made a difference as they beat the

:22:06. > :22:10.championships I'd buy 2-1. Rovers are second bottle, but they stunned

:22:11. > :22:15.United earlier on Ewood Park. They didn't hold their lead for too long,

:22:16. > :22:19.Henrikh Mkhitaryan with a lovely pass for Marcus Rashford and he

:22:20. > :22:28.rounded the keeper to make it 1-1 before Ibrahimovic's winner. They

:22:29. > :22:32.gave us a hard game and congratulations to them, because

:22:33. > :22:38.their approach was brave and strong and a very correct game. He had a

:22:39. > :22:48.game in his hands easily. But they had a Brent attitude, -- a brilliant

:22:49. > :22:54.attitude and this professional attitude, focus and responsibility,

:22:55. > :23:01.we would be in real trouble. Tottenham Hotspur booking their

:23:02. > :23:09.place, in a 3-0 win. The striker Harry Kane scored a hat-trick

:23:10. > :23:13.against the championship side. Very good, we have not had a few great

:23:14. > :23:18.results recently and we wanted to get a win today, we have done that

:23:19. > :23:21.and played very well and comfortable and properly should have added a few

:23:22. > :23:25.more goals and it is a great game all around and we are happy with it.

:23:26. > :23:28.In Spain's Primera Division Lionel Messi's fourth minute goal

:23:29. > :23:32.for Barcelona narrowed the gap on leaders Real Madrid to one point.

:23:33. > :23:38.They are currently drawing. Real Madrid still have two games in hand

:23:39. > :23:46.on the Catalans but the win came as welcome relief after comprehensive

:23:47. > :23:50.loss to PSG earlier this week. Elsewhere Valencia picked up an

:23:51. > :23:53.important week the Athletic Bilbao, moving them away from relegation

:23:54. > :24:02.trouble, also victories for Villarreal and Celta Vigo.

:24:03. > :24:04.Wigan have won Rugby League's World Club Challenge

:24:05. > :24:07.It's the annual match bewteen the Superleague winners

:24:08. > :24:11.The Warriors were facing the Cronulla Sharks at the DW
