:00:13. > :00:14.militants in Afghanistan, and says the operation

:00:15. > :00:26.The enemy had created tunnels and extensive minefields and this weapon

:00:27. > :00:29.was used to reduce those obstacles. Another battle against IS -

:00:30. > :00:31.Iraqi forces meet fierce resistance as they close

:00:32. > :00:35.in on the Old City of Mosul. Is North Korea's leader preparing

:00:36. > :00:40.for another nuclear missile test? China warns tensions

:00:41. > :00:43.are so high conflict And Canada is a step closer

:00:44. > :00:49.to legalising cannabis It was the right

:00:50. > :01:14.weapon for the target. America's most senior military

:01:15. > :01:17.commander in Afghanistan has defended the decision to drop a huge

:01:18. > :01:20.bomb on Islamic State militants in a remote area

:01:21. > :01:27.in the east of the country. This is the first time the US

:01:28. > :01:30.has deployed in combat the Massive Ordinance

:01:31. > :01:36.Air Blast bomb, referred to as 'the

:01:37. > :01:38.Mother of All Bombs'. The Afghan government

:01:39. > :01:39.says 36 militants were killed and no civilians,

:01:40. > :01:41.although the Islamic State A remote valley in a room or

:01:42. > :01:51.country. 11 tonnes of high explosive

:01:52. > :01:55.dropped on an Isis tunnel complex in the mountains

:01:56. > :01:57.of eastern Afghanistan. The weapon used is called a BOAB

:01:58. > :02:05.or a massive ordnance air burst, also known as

:02:06. > :02:07.the mother of all bombs. This was its first

:02:08. > :02:10.time used in combat. This was the right weapon

:02:11. > :02:17.against the right target. We will continue to work shoulder

:02:18. > :02:20.to shoulder with our Afghan comrades to eliminate this threat

:02:21. > :02:23.to the Afghan people, especially the people

:02:24. > :02:26.in Kandahar and the people in the entire region and the people

:02:27. > :02:29.around the world. Local villagers confirmed that Isis

:02:30. > :02:33.fighters had set up bases in the mountains behind them

:02:34. > :02:36.and said the bomb had hit its target, but the strike

:02:37. > :02:40.was condemned by so-called Islamic State

:02:41. > :02:49.and the Afghan former president. How could the United States

:02:50. > :02:51.use Afghanistan as its For testing weapons of mass

:02:52. > :03:00.destruction on our soil? President Trump's targets now

:03:01. > :03:04.include three major problem areas for the US, Afghanistan,

:03:05. > :03:07.Syria and North Korea. The massive weapon that the Pentagon

:03:08. > :03:12.has used in Afghanistan has intended to send a message

:03:13. > :03:15.to its enemies, you're not safe In Syria, the Trump Administration

:03:16. > :03:23.will be hoping that that last week's cruise missile strike will deter

:03:24. > :03:25.President Assad from any further Mr Trump is hoping sending this

:03:26. > :03:35.powerful naval armada off shore will deter

:03:36. > :03:38.further nuclear tests. The question is can you manage

:03:39. > :03:40.three global crisis It is very possible that if these

:03:41. > :03:45.three scenarios come together, Syria, Afghanistan and

:03:46. > :03:47.North Korea, that it would overwhelm the policy-making capabilities

:03:48. > :03:54.of Mr Trump's Administration. planning capabilities

:03:55. > :03:58.of the Pentagon and it resource capabilities

:03:59. > :04:00.of the US military. President Trump and his entourage

:04:01. > :04:03.now feel they are on a roll, tackling head on the foreign

:04:04. > :04:06.policy challenges the previous administration was

:04:07. > :04:14.unable to resolve. There is now the risk that racking

:04:15. > :04:17.up the rhetoric could lead America into new conflict or in the absence

:04:18. > :04:20.of any swift resolutions, Mr Trump will turn his back on foreign

:04:21. > :04:23.adventures and focus instead on Joining me from our Washington

:04:24. > :04:31.studio is Doctor Kamran Bokhari from George Washington University's

:04:32. > :04:40.Program on Extremism. Thank you for joining us. Let's

:04:41. > :04:46.start with the ball itself. The general described this as the right

:04:47. > :04:53.weapon for the target. What do you make of this? I think that is pretty

:04:54. > :04:58.accurate. He would not be using a $15 million a piece weapon

:04:59. > :05:03.frivolously. Or just to send a message or Telegraph something to

:05:04. > :05:06.the North Koreans or the Russians. I think there was significant

:05:07. > :05:11.intelligence about the identity of the people who were in this complex.

:05:12. > :05:18.That they were high level operatives of Isis and there is the logistics.

:05:19. > :05:23.What kind of weapon will be used in a decisive strike and lead to the

:05:24. > :05:28.outcome that is desired? How significant was the target area? We

:05:29. > :05:31.are talking about 300 metre long network of caves and tunnels. How

:05:32. > :05:39.significant was that link this location? -- heading this location?

:05:40. > :05:47.We do not have much intelligence on it but if the decision was taken to

:05:48. > :05:54.use this weapon, it means that there was a significant complex that could

:05:55. > :06:01.not be taken out by any other weapon, at least not in a decisive

:06:02. > :06:04.weight. Of course the people inside were not low level operatives, they

:06:05. > :06:12.had to be senior officials who were actually involved in the planning of

:06:13. > :06:16.attacks on other countries. Let's focus on those operatives, Isis has

:06:17. > :06:23.been operating in Afghanistan since 2015. We know so much about them in

:06:24. > :06:29.Iraq and Syria. We have to keep in mind that Isis did not walk or

:06:30. > :06:35.travel from its core car to Afghanistan. The Isis in

:06:36. > :06:38.Afghanistan, like any other country, Bangladesh or somewhere in Africa,

:06:39. > :06:44.consists of local actors who have joined Isis on their own. They were

:06:45. > :06:51.there and they had their own presence. They just switched sides.

:06:52. > :06:56.They were likely former Taliban or I chi leader. Or both. They had the

:06:57. > :07:04.wherewithal to support the Isis cause. -- Al-Qaeda leader. Isis may

:07:05. > :07:08.have given them some assistance. Therefore, this is a formidable

:07:09. > :07:14.presence. They have demonstrated their ability to target capital. If

:07:15. > :07:19.you have the intelligence, you do not sit on it, you act on it. A lot

:07:20. > :07:25.is being said about Donald Trump cosmic strategy or a lack of it. --

:07:26. > :07:30.Donald Trump's strategy or a lack of it. Is there is strategy or are

:07:31. > :07:35.these one of strikes? We talk about strategy. We have to keep in mind

:07:36. > :07:39.that a change in Government, in terms of the new political party

:07:40. > :07:44.taking office or new head of state, does not mean there will be a new

:07:45. > :07:48.strategy. Yes, there will be new ideas that will be brought to the

:07:49. > :07:52.table through the new staff of the president trying to deal with the

:07:53. > :07:55.same problems that their predecessors were struggling with.

:07:56. > :08:00.That's something to bear in mind when we talk about strategy. At this

:08:01. > :08:08.point, there is no good strategy. There are a set of options that most

:08:09. > :08:13.of them are on it a sliding scale of bad to worse. This is a very

:08:14. > :08:17.difficult situation and it does not matter whether Trump is in office or

:08:18. > :08:22.if Hillary Clinton had been collected, she would have faced the

:08:23. > :08:29.same problem. You take it one day at the time and hence the one off

:08:30. > :08:36.strikes and you deal with it not in a... But in a fashion that makes

:08:37. > :08:41.sense for the reality on the ground as it falls. A sliding scale of bad

:08:42. > :08:43.to worse. We are going to leave it there but thank you very much for

:08:44. > :08:46.your expertise. Let's turn to Iraq now

:08:47. > :08:48.where government forces are also Iraqi authorities have told

:08:49. > :08:52.the residents of Mosul to remain indoors as security forces begin

:08:53. > :08:54.encircling the Old City, before Our Defence Correspondent Jonathan

:08:55. > :09:09.Beale reports from the front line. The old city of Mosul

:09:10. > :09:12.and its most famous landmark, the leaning minaret

:09:13. > :09:17.of the Al Nuri Mosque. This is where Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi

:09:18. > :09:24.where first appeared as leader of the so-called

:09:25. > :09:28.Islamic State. They still control it,

:09:29. > :09:30.most of what you can see. We know the enemy is weak

:09:31. > :09:42.and on its last legs. A visit to the front line, though,

:09:43. > :09:50.tells a different story. For the past few weeks,

:09:51. > :09:52.the Iraqi advance Well, these the federal police

:09:53. > :10:00.are surrounded on two sides by IS and they are firing

:10:01. > :10:09.on their positions. The IS snipers just

:10:10. > :10:11.10 metres from this You can see the rounds,

:10:12. > :10:16.the IS rounds coming in here pretty Tens of thousands of civilians

:10:17. > :10:24.are still trapped, caught Much of Mosul has already

:10:25. > :10:28.been turned to rubble. Even in these deserted

:10:29. > :10:38.streets, recently secured,

:10:39. > :10:44.there is just the debris of war. Here discarded IS uniforms

:10:45. > :10:46.and nearby one of But the enemy is not

:10:47. > :10:51.just hiding in the city. We joined an Iraqi intelligence

:10:52. > :10:53.unit hunting down IS infiltrators and collaborators

:10:54. > :10:57.who have already escaped. Now seeking shelter

:10:58. > :11:00.and avoiding capture in camps, living alongside

:11:12. > :11:13.who fled the fighting. In the camp or in his

:11:14. > :11:28.house, in Mosul. The extremists may be

:11:29. > :11:33.losing their grip on Mosul, but even if they are defeated,

:11:34. > :11:41.IS will not have gone away. North Korea has vowed to mount

:11:42. > :11:44.a "merciless" response to any US provocation following comments

:11:45. > :11:49.from President Donald Trump that the isolated regime's nuclear

:11:50. > :11:51.weapons programme "will be dealt Meanwhile, Pyongyang

:11:52. > :11:55.is thought to be preparing parade tomorrow at which its latest

:11:56. > :12:00.missile technology Our reporter John Sudworth

:12:01. > :12:04.is with a group of foreign journalists invited

:12:05. > :12:10.to witness the event. In North Korea, the spectre of war

:13:04. > :13:12.birth this weekend there is an awareness of the rising

:13:13. > :13:21.tension with America. If we do not have

:13:22. > :13:24.the nuclear weapons, the nuclear weapons of another

:13:34. > :13:57.Kim Jong-un held this meeting where his late

:13:58. > :13:59.grandfather was honoured. He is also thought to be

:14:00. > :14:01.planning a massive military parade as a powerful tribute

:14:02. > :14:03.and a message of defiance. This is a country where

:14:04. > :14:06.art and armaments are blended in singular purpose,

:14:07. > :14:08.to demonstrate to the watching world that its nuclear ambitions

:14:09. > :14:14.will not be stopped. Let's bring you up-to-date with some

:17:22. > :17:23.Bateman has the details. The police and the security agency

:17:24. > :17:28.Shin Bet here have said that it was a 57-year-old man who lived

:17:31. > :17:40.released from a psychiatric hospital and suggested he had

:17:43. > :17:45.at the early stage of this investigation

:17:46. > :17:51.as to what went on. In terms of this attack

:17:52. > :17:54.itself, we know that this woman was attacked

:19:42. > :19:46.and speak lovingly about the message of Prophet Muhammad. He had been

:19:47. > :19:51.studying at the University. Yesterday, a mob of hundreds of

:19:52. > :19:56.young men rampaged through the campus, accusing him of spreading

:19:57. > :20:02.blasphemy on line. This is his room where he tried to hide from the mob.

:20:03. > :20:05.You can still see on the walls philosophical quotes he had written

:22:02. > :22:06.introduced legislation that would legalise marijuana next year. It

:22:07. > :22:08.would become only the second country after you require it to legalise the

:22:09. > :22:26.drug as a consumer product. On Thursday at the Prime Minister

:22:27. > :22:30.fulfilled his campaign promise and introduced legislation to legalise

:22:31. > :22:36.marijuana in the name of safety. If your objective is to protect public

:22:44. > :22:48.the flow of profits to illegal crime, then the law that stands

:22:49. > :22:51.today has been an abject failure. The Government says its plan to

:22:52. > :22:57.regulate the sale of marijuana will keep kids away from it and stop

:22:58. > :23:02.money going to organised criminals. The proposed legislation which has

:23:03. > :23:06.introduced today seeks to legalise, strictly regulate and restrict

:23:07. > :23:12.access to cannabis and it will make Canada safer. It will impose serious

:23:13. > :23:18.criminal penalties that provide cannabis to young people, create an

:23:19. > :23:25.illegal market to cannabis and it will protect public health through

:23:26. > :23:31.strict requirements for safety and quality. It would set the minimum
