:00:00. > :00:15.On the eve of election day in France, hackers release a trove

:00:16. > :00:19.of documents targeting Emmanuel Macron's team.

:00:20. > :00:22.New protests in Venezuela as US officials meet with the Leader

:00:23. > :00:28.So near and yet so far - Kenya's Kipchoge runs the fastest

:00:29. > :00:33.marathon in history, but WON'T get into the record books.

:00:34. > :00:36.And - it's something the fashion world has been criticised

:00:37. > :00:41.for time and time again - thin models.

:00:42. > :00:58.Hello and welcome to World News Today.

:00:59. > :01:04.With less than 12 hours to go before voting starts,

:01:05. > :01:07.France's Election Authority - has warned the media

:01:08. > :01:09.against spreading information hacked from the campaign of the centrist

:01:10. > :01:17.Aides to Mr Macron say the hacking attack was intended

:01:18. > :01:23.James Reynolds has sent this report.

:01:24. > :01:26.Emmanuel Macron arrived last night for his final interview,

:01:27. > :01:33.assuming that his campaign was basically done.

:01:34. > :01:36.But whilst he was speaking, documents stolen from his team were

:01:37. > :01:44.Coming in the last hour, his team said this

:01:45. > :01:51.intervention is an attempt to destabilise democracy, as happened

:01:52. > :01:56.In the past, Emmanuel Macron said that

:01:57. > :01:59.Russian-backed hackers were out to get him.

:02:00. > :02:04.One cyber expert said this hack looks different.

:02:05. > :02:07.It is very low-level, compared with what they

:02:08. > :02:15.That was a highly creative and high-end information war

:02:16. > :02:24.What we are witnessing now is very low-end, very amateurish.

:02:25. > :02:27.But many French people braving the Saturday drizzle do not know

:02:28. > :02:32.On this, the day before the vote, the French media is

:02:33. > :02:36.banned from doing any in-depth political reporting.

:02:37. > :02:41.It shows Emanuel Macron has capable enemies.

:02:42. > :02:44.It may not change the course of this election.

:02:45. > :02:51.Many French people have already decided which way they will vote.

:02:52. > :02:53.And some have already cast their ballots.

:02:54. > :02:57.These French citizens in Canada have made an early start.

:02:58. > :03:06.47 million voters here in France will soon follow.

:03:07. > :03:09.So how is that data leak affecting the mood in France?

:03:10. > :03:13.Our correspondent Karin Gianone is in Paris.

:03:14. > :03:16.Already this election had been an extraordinary one.

:03:17. > :03:19.Who in France would have imagined that on the eve of the second

:03:20. > :03:22.round of its presidential election we could have ended up

:03:23. > :03:25.with these two candidates, the far right Marine Le Pen,

:03:26. > :03:28.and Emmanuel Macron, the centrist candidate,

:03:29. > :03:36.who only set up his campaign in the last few months?

:03:37. > :03:41.But in the very last hours, at this latest twist came. This massive dump

:03:42. > :03:45.of date her. I have been talking

:03:46. > :03:48.about this with my guest, Tristan Mendes France,

:03:49. > :03:50.an expert in social media at As far as we know, there was a leak

:03:51. > :04:01.on a forum last night at 8:30pm, and those documents became viral

:04:02. > :04:10.half an hour later on social media. Today there is a hashtag

:04:11. > :04:15.called #Macronleaks, As for the timing,

:04:16. > :04:19.it is rather strange. It came hours before

:04:20. > :04:22.all the restrictions about what you can say

:04:23. > :04:26.about the election came into force. It means that neither candidate can

:04:27. > :04:29.comment on the content of this. Nobody understands why,

:04:30. > :04:33.just two days before the presidential election,

:04:34. > :04:36.it has come out. There is supposedly

:04:37. > :04:43.a huge amount of data. It cannot be processed in 48 hours,

:04:44. > :04:46.so it's impossible for anybody to estimate the damage that

:04:47. > :04:49.could come out of it. I don't think it will impact

:04:50. > :04:57.tomorrow's election, but it might impact later,

:04:58. > :04:59.specifically in a month, for the election of the members of

:05:00. > :05:03.Parliament. So perhaps it's too late

:05:04. > :05:06.to do anything tangible for the presidential election

:05:07. > :05:09.tomorrow, but in six weeks' time, we have this key vote that

:05:10. > :05:11.Emmanuel Macron is counting You think that could

:05:12. > :05:23.make a difference? There could be one month

:05:24. > :05:25.of smear campaign, extracted from the information in those

:05:26. > :05:29.documents that have linked, and that could be problematic

:05:30. > :05:31.for Macron if he becomes elected. If he doesn't get a majority,

:05:32. > :05:36.how will he implement his policy? In terms of the origin of this

:05:37. > :05:39.attack, there have been allegations against Kremlin-backed agents

:05:40. > :05:43.previously targeting Everybody is looking

:05:44. > :05:55.towards the Kremlin, Nobody will ever have

:05:56. > :06:04.absolute proof, only hints. The French Electoral Commission has

:06:05. > :06:13.come out very strongly, telling the media and people

:06:14. > :06:16.using social media that they mustn't It's a question of legality,

:06:17. > :06:21.but it's pointless today. The environment online

:06:22. > :06:23.has no frontier. Even French-speaking media

:06:24. > :06:25.in Belgium are able to speak about this horrible story,

:06:26. > :06:30.so I understand the French position, That was Tristan Mendes France,

:06:31. > :06:46.from the Sorbonne's School That was Tristan Mendes France, from

:06:47. > :06:50.the Sorbonne's School of Journalism. Just to remind you, as we go

:06:51. > :06:52.into Sunday's final vote, An IPSOS poll published

:06:53. > :06:56.in Le Monde newspaper puts Emmanuel Macron,

:06:57. > :06:57.the centrist, on 63%. He is the clear favourite in this

:06:58. > :07:09.presidential election. We will be bringing you special

:07:10. > :07:14.coverage on the BBC of the results as they come out late on Sunday. We

:07:15. > :07:17.will be bring you a special programme presented by Christian

:07:18. > :07:20.Fraser from 7:30pm GMT. Thousands of women have led

:07:21. > :07:22.a march in Venezuela's capital of Caracas in

:07:23. > :07:24.the latest anti-government At least 36 people have been killed

:07:25. > :07:28.and hundreds injured It comes as Donald Trump's national

:07:29. > :07:31.security adviser met with Venezuela's Leader

:07:32. > :07:50.of the Opposition on how to bring The daily wave of protests against

:07:51. > :07:55.the government of Nicolas Maduro continues across Venezuela. In the

:07:56. > :07:58.capital Caracas thousands of women marched on the Defence Ministry,

:07:59. > :08:02.dressed symbolically in white, urging the government to end what

:08:03. > :08:07.they said was the brutal oppression of its opponents and free hundreds

:08:08. > :08:12.of political prisoners. Some of these protesters have husbands and

:08:13. > :08:17.family members in jail, they say in prison for opposing a corrupt

:08:18. > :08:22.regime. But the government and the Armed forces, which remain loyal so

:08:23. > :08:27.far, are not backing off. More than 30 people have been killed in a

:08:28. > :08:32.month of demonstrations. President Maduro has vowed to ride out the

:08:33. > :08:38.storm, accusing Venezuelan's enemies abroad and what he says our business

:08:39. > :08:44.elites at home, waging a campaign of destabilisation. But what should be

:08:45. > :08:48.Latin America's wealthiest and most stable nation is punch-drunk from

:08:49. > :08:55.years of instability. Many young people say they have no future here.

:08:56. > :09:00.I knew him for nine years, says this girl who has just buried her friend

:09:01. > :09:06.and fellow youth orchestra member. It hurts me so much to see him taken

:09:07. > :09:11.in the bloom of his life, just 18 years old. Venezuelan has the

:09:12. > :09:17.world's second largest oil reserves, yet in cities across the country,

:09:18. > :09:21.people are so poor and hungry, they are looting shops for food, even

:09:22. > :09:35.when there is nothing there for sale. With an inflation rate of

:09:36. > :09:37.900%, Venezuelans are used to queueing for basic goods at

:09:38. > :09:39.subsidised government markets. But food and medicine is scarce. Hugo

:09:40. > :09:43.Chavez's socialist revolution failing the very people who

:09:44. > :09:48.supported it. Thousands remain loyal, and chav is's success in

:09:49. > :09:54.Nicolas Maduro has rejected calls for the release of political

:09:55. > :09:57.prisoners. After a week of increasingly violent protests,

:09:58. > :10:02.opposition leaders met senior members of the Trump administration,

:10:03. > :10:04.Washington accusing Mr Maduro of disregarding the rights of his own

:10:05. > :10:06.people. Let's take a look at some of

:10:07. > :10:10.the other stories making the news... The former head of the Palestinian

:10:11. > :10:12.militant group Hamas in the Gaza Strip, Ismail Haniyeh,

:10:13. > :10:14.has been elected as He succeeds Khaled Meshaal,

:10:15. > :10:19.who has led the movement The election took place

:10:20. > :10:23.using a video link between The British Prime Minster Theresa

:10:24. > :10:28.May says she's grateful for the support her Conservative

:10:29. > :10:33.party received in the local elections, but she says she's taking

:10:34. > :10:40.nothing for granted ahead The Leader of the Opposition Labour

:10:41. > :10:54.party, Jeremy Corbyn, has admitted Tens of thousands of Polish

:10:55. > :10:58.opposition supporters have taken taking part what they called

:10:59. > :11:00.a Freedom March through Warsaw, to protest against what they see

:11:01. > :11:03.as curbs on democracy imposed The opposition has accused

:11:04. > :11:06.the governing party of trying to stack the constitutional tribunal

:11:07. > :11:08.with sympathetic judges and of manipulating radio

:11:09. > :11:11.and television coverage. Pupils from two girls' schools

:11:12. > :11:15.in the Indian capital, Delhi, have been taken to hospital

:11:16. > :11:18.for treatment after a chemical The substance, which is thought

:11:19. > :11:23.to have been used in pesticides, caused eye and throat irritations -

:11:24. > :11:26.as well as breathing difficulties. Police say they'll be

:11:27. > :11:28.taking legal action Our South Asia regional

:11:29. > :11:42.editor, Charles Haviland Details emerged rather slowly

:11:43. > :11:46.throughout Saturday. First we had reports of a few dozen schoolgirls

:11:47. > :11:51.being admitted to hospital for treatment, but later in the day, the

:11:52. > :11:56.official Indian news agency said more than 300 had been admitted,

:11:57. > :12:00.from two schools, and several teachers needing treatment. The

:12:01. > :12:05.symptoms were problems with their eyes, throats, and breathing

:12:06. > :12:10.problems, from this leakage from a container truck at some kind of

:12:11. > :12:16.storage depot in Tughlakabad in the south of Delhi. It appears these

:12:17. > :12:21.were chemicals imported from China for use in pesticides. Do we know

:12:22. > :12:25.how some of the victims are? The doctors have been saying from the

:12:26. > :12:30.start that they are OK and no one is in danger. What we heard towards the

:12:31. > :12:36.end of Saturday was that people are being discharged and going home to

:12:37. > :12:41.their families. That seems to be the situation. That said, we have had

:12:42. > :12:45.some people saying they are out of danger, and others simply saying

:12:46. > :12:52.they are stable, which sounds less certain. The Indian media have not

:12:53. > :12:56.given a very full account of what has happened, and haven't prioritise

:12:57. > :13:01.the story very much. These sorts of leagues are not actually unusual in

:13:02. > :13:07.India, are they? They do happen from time to time. There was one of three

:13:08. > :13:13.years ago in Chhattisgarh, with a smaller number of people being

:13:14. > :13:17.affected. There is an issue in India with supervision. The police have

:13:18. > :13:22.said that legal action will be taken in this case because Hazard

:13:23. > :13:27.materials were not being stored responsibly. Others are saying that

:13:28. > :13:29.this material should not be close to these schools at all.

:13:30. > :13:31.Stay with us on BBC World News, still to come...

:13:32. > :13:34.Models who are extremely thin are to be banned

:13:35. > :13:36.from the catwalk in France - but will it work?

:13:37. > :14:56.We'll get the view of a fashion editor.

:14:57. > :15:03.computer hackers release a huge cache of documents which they say

:15:04. > :15:07.New protests in Venezuela as US officials meet with the Leader

:15:08. > :15:25.There's been a reduction in fighting in Syria since a Russian-led

:15:26. > :15:27.initiative took effect - to halt the country's six-year war.

:15:28. > :15:30.The Russian defence ministry says it has registered 15 violations

:15:31. > :15:34.Also, Russia and the United States have agreed to resume the operation

:15:35. > :15:37.of a bilateral memorandum to prevent mid-air clashes in

:15:38. > :15:56.Syrian government aircraft in action. There are reports of

:15:57. > :16:00.shelling and gunfire elsewhere in the country, but the violence has

:16:01. > :16:10.eased following the international plan to create for de-escalates a

:16:11. > :16:19.Sion Jones inside Syria. Russian and US staff have... In a phone call,

:16:20. > :16:23.representatives agreed to work on additional measures. Russia says a

:16:24. > :16:26.new initiative to create demilitarised areas in Syria can

:16:27. > :16:32.pave the way towards more substantive negotiations.

:16:33. > :16:38.TRANSLATION: The most important thing is that the implementation of

:16:39. > :16:43.the memorandum can help cease the military action and therefore end

:16:44. > :16:48.the Syrian crisis at a practical level. The initiative is of

:16:49. > :16:54.significant meaning to the political process in Syria. The deal to create

:16:55. > :16:59.de-escalation zones in the major areas of conflict in Syria took

:17:00. > :17:04.effect in midnight on Friday. The initiative was proposed by Russia,

:17:05. > :17:09.President Bashar al-Assad's most powerful ally. It is backed by

:17:10. > :17:18.Turkey and Iran. With the deal coming from two strong back backers

:17:19. > :17:22.of the regime, some say they are not too confident about it.

:17:23. > :17:27.TRANSLATION: The revolution is very damaged. It is strangled, and the

:17:28. > :17:34.Syrian people are killed in these so-called de-escalation zones. The

:17:35. > :17:37.regime and the Russians are the only beneficiaries. Failure of peace

:17:38. > :17:45.efforts are familiar story in this conflict that has claimed 300,000

:17:46. > :17:47.lives since 2012. So how effective the current plan will prove to be is

:17:48. > :17:58.highly uncertain. The Nigerian government says 82

:17:59. > :18:03.girls kidnapped by Boko Haram in northern Nigeria have been released.

:18:04. > :18:08.The girls were among about 220 students abducted from a secondary

:18:09. > :18:12.school in the north-east of the country in 2014. That story is

:18:13. > :18:14.breaking at the moment, so we will bring you more details when we have

:18:15. > :18:19.them. Now some sport. Here is James. Barcelona and Real Madrid are both

:18:20. > :18:22.still battling it out Barcelona surged three points clear

:18:23. > :18:26.of Real with a thumping 4-1 win Lionel Messi scored twice

:18:27. > :18:30.and there was one each Real though look certain to go

:18:31. > :18:35.back level on points - they're currently winning 4-0

:18:36. > :18:41.at already relegated Granada. Swansea have moved out of the bottom

:18:42. > :18:49.three in the Premier League after a 1-0 win over Everton

:18:50. > :18:53.at the Liberty stadium Fernando Llorente got the crucial

:18:54. > :18:57.goal in the 29th minute, It was the Spaniard's 13th league

:18:58. > :19:02.goal of the season and it Swansea's win means that Hull drop

:19:03. > :19:12.into the relegation zone - they lost 2-0 at home to already

:19:13. > :19:15.relegated Sunderland. Billy Jones and Jermaine Defoe

:19:16. > :19:18.scored for the Black Cats. It was Marco Silva's first

:19:19. > :19:30.experience of a home defeat in three To lose our focus like we did in the

:19:31. > :19:35.second half, and we conceded two goals and set pieces. That's our

:19:36. > :19:40.problem. It's like you come to the past again. Our team in the past

:19:41. > :19:45.conceded too many goals in set pieces, because they lost focus, and

:19:46. > :19:50.that happened this afternoon. The second goal was offside again, and

:19:51. > :19:55.the referee didn't see. That is football, and now is the moment to

:19:56. > :19:59.rest, to analyse what happened, and prepare for the next.

:20:00. > :20:03.Here are the rest of the day's Premier League scores.

:20:04. > :20:07.Crystal Palace still aren't safe from relegation after being thrashed

:20:08. > :20:19.City move up the third in the race for a Champions League place.

:20:20. > :20:23.Tyson Fury has said he'd easily beat unified heavyweight champion

:20:24. > :20:26.Anthony Joshua should the pair meet in the ring.

:20:27. > :20:34.Fury has dealt with depression and lost his boxing

:20:35. > :20:36.licence after beating Wladimir Klitschko in November 2015.

:20:37. > :20:39.Fury says he'll be back fighting in July, on the undercard

:20:40. > :20:41.at London's Copper Box Arena, IF his licence is reinstated

:20:42. > :20:43.by the British Boxing Board of Control.

:20:44. > :20:48.He clearly has scant regard for Joshua.

:20:49. > :20:58.I can play with that body-builder like a cat playing with a ball of

:20:59. > :21:02.wool. And if I get hit, I will be highly, highly disappointed. If you

:21:03. > :21:04.can even land a blow on me. Never mind beat me.

:21:05. > :21:07.An attempt to run the first sub-2 hour marathon has failed.

:21:08. > :21:09.There were no spectators, just a small number of journalists,

:21:10. > :21:12.allowed to attend the event on the Monza racetrack in Italy.

:21:13. > :21:14.Only one of the three men taking part, Eliud Kipchoge,

:21:15. > :21:16.the Olympic champion, came close to the two hour

:21:17. > :21:19.mark, crossing the line in two hours 25 seconds.

:21:20. > :21:22.And although it's the fastest marathon in history -

:21:23. > :21:26.it won't be counted as an official record, because of the use

:21:27. > :21:50.The name was to bring about 10 billion people, and knock out the

:21:51. > :21:55.third set. 12 marathons in 12 hours is impossible. So to pass that

:21:56. > :22:00.message is really important to me. That's why I was pushing to prove

:22:01. > :22:06.that there is no human who has limitations. He is averaging 17

:22:07. > :22:09.seconds that every 100 metres he runs. That is remarkable. That is

:22:10. > :22:12.all the sport for now. A law in France banning the use

:22:13. > :22:15.of extremely thin fashion models Models working there need to provide

:22:16. > :22:18.a doctor's certificate attesting to their overall physical health,

:22:19. > :22:20.with special regard Digitally altered photos will also

:22:21. > :22:26.have to be labelled from October. Earlier I spoke to Debra Bourne

:22:27. > :22:29.from the campaign group "all walks beyond the catwalk",

:22:30. > :22:44.I asked her The important thing is the serious

:22:45. > :22:51.message it sends out to the fashion industry. I don't know how they can

:22:52. > :22:56.keep it. Will they send a police officer to every photographic studio

:22:57. > :23:02.in Paris what is interesting is the doctors note. This would be valid

:23:03. > :23:07.for two years, and as all women know, your weight fluctuates a lot

:23:08. > :23:12.over two years. Yes. There's some real problems here in terms of the

:23:13. > :23:18.actual strategy and day-to-day managing of this law. I don't know.

:23:19. > :23:22.I don't know if it exists when French brands shoot outside of

:23:23. > :23:29.London. Many campaigns are shot in New York, the Caribbean, London. But

:23:30. > :23:35.the government has done something that is sending out a very clear

:23:36. > :23:40.message. Paris has a reputation in the industry in terms of casting for

:23:41. > :23:45.putting very skinny models on the catwalk, and that is serious. What

:23:46. > :23:50.is your opinion on the labelling of digitally enhanced photos? I think

:23:51. > :23:55.it's great. I was part of a government round table on body

:23:56. > :23:59.confidence, and this is something we discussed in the UK about bringing

:24:00. > :24:04.this in with a kite marking system. It makes it very clear to the

:24:05. > :24:09.consumer that this is an animation, that photo is that they could think

:24:10. > :24:13.were real have been enhanced and touched up and changed, and people's

:24:14. > :24:19.body shapes have changed. I would like to see a world where that

:24:20. > :24:31.doesn't happen at all, and where our imagery is far more real, but given

:24:32. > :24:33.that we have to change things step-by-step, it is a fantastic move
