:00:00. > :00:00.And one of the most eagerly anticipated football matches, the

:00:00. > :00:12.Champions League final, reaches its climax.

:00:13. > :00:15.Hello and welcome to World News Today.

:00:16. > :00:19.Reports from the Iraqi city of Mosul say dozens of civilians have been

:00:20. > :00:22.killed while fleeing a neighbourhood held by Islamic State fighters.

:00:23. > :00:25.Exactly how they died is not yet clear.

:00:26. > :00:27.But there have been reports of the militants targeting civilians

:00:28. > :00:39.Iraqi government forces retook eastern Mosul back in January.

:00:40. > :00:42.They began a new push this week to capture the remaining

:00:43. > :00:52.part held by Islamic State in the west.

:00:53. > :00:54.The latest fighting is focused on Al Zanjili

:00:55. > :01:04.They are escaping. They decided to gather their children and take their

:01:05. > :01:08.chances in the streets of this war zone, fleeing neighbourhoods

:01:09. > :01:16.controlled by the militants. There was danger all around, from the

:01:17. > :01:19.militants and the attacking Government forces and their US

:01:20. > :01:24.allies in aircraft overhead. TRANSLATION: I went out to bring

:01:25. > :01:29.water from a nearby place. We were about 200 or 250 people, and a

:01:30. > :01:34.member of Islamic State walked amongst us. Minutes later, a plane

:01:35. > :01:44.struck the crowd. He managed to escape and we were hurt. In amongst

:01:45. > :01:48.the families came the casualties. In one place, many did not survive,

:01:49. > :01:54.their bodies were left lying where they fell. There is this account of

:01:55. > :02:01.what happened. How the slaughter here unfolded. In the last two days,

:02:02. > :02:05.IS has been shooting people escaping from this area in the street. I saw

:02:06. > :02:12.over 50 dead bodies yesterday. We work with the Americans to give

:02:13. > :02:17.smoke and Iraqi tank, and we followed behind them and rescued one

:02:18. > :02:22.little girl and one man. While the civilians tried to flee, the battle

:02:23. > :02:26.for Mosul rages on. There has been a month after month of intense street

:02:27. > :02:33.fighting. Every house is being fought for. But the soldiers are now

:02:34. > :02:38.closing in on the militants' last Bastian, Mosul's historic old city

:02:39. > :02:43.and the few areas around it. For some, those who made it through the

:02:44. > :02:47.front lines, there is relief, a sudden sense that, at least for now,

:02:48. > :02:50.the worst is over. Alan Johnston, BBC News.

:02:51. > :02:52.Days after President Trump pulled the United States out

:02:53. > :02:55.of the Paris climate deal, France and India have reaffirmed

:02:56. > :02:59.At a meeting in Paris, Mr Macron said they stood

:03:00. > :03:04.India is the third-largest greenhouse gas emitter in the world.

:03:05. > :03:06.Mr Modi said the Paris climate agreement was part

:03:07. > :03:17.TRANSLATION: We are in favour of this Paris agreement and we will

:03:18. > :03:25.Even if this agreement did not exist, we will ensure that

:03:26. > :03:30.future generations receive something good from ours.

:03:31. > :03:32.-- future generations receive something good from us.

:03:33. > :03:34.Actually, it's about something that can protect future

:03:35. > :03:38.generations, that can give rise to a new Hope.

:03:39. > :03:39.It's not simply just about the protection

:03:40. > :03:41.of the environment, it's about our common responsibility

:03:42. > :03:54.The deputy leader of Afghanistan has survived a bomb attack at a funeral

:03:55. > :03:59.in the capital, Kabul. That the seven people were cold and over 100

:04:00. > :04:05.injured in the explosions. The funeral was taking place of the son

:04:06. > :04:09.of a prominent politician. He was killed yesterday during clashes

:04:10. > :04:14.between demonstrators and police. From Kabul, we were sent this

:04:15. > :04:23.report, which contains images find upsetting. Bloodshed in a

:04:24. > :04:30.graveyard. Mourners were targeted in the cemetery as they were burying...

:04:31. > :04:37.Survivors describe the carnage they had witnessed. TRANSLATION: There

:04:38. > :04:40.were explosions everywhere, and I saw my hands and face were burning.

:04:41. > :04:44.There were parts of human bodies lying all around me. After that, I

:04:45. > :04:50.had to get to hospital. This is the third time in four days that dead

:04:51. > :04:55.and injured Afghans have been brought to emergency hospitals

:04:56. > :04:59.across the city. Kabul used to be one of the most secure places in the

:05:00. > :05:02.country, now it seems it is one of the most dangerous. Relatives

:05:03. > :05:06.gathered, anxious for news of their loved ones. This man was describing

:05:07. > :05:14.how the suicide bombers blew themselves up one after another,

:05:15. > :05:18.when suddenly gunfire rang out. It turned out to be warning shots from

:05:19. > :05:25.the police, but it's a measure of how tense the city is. Kabul is

:05:26. > :05:30.still reeling from a blast on Wednesday which killed 90 people.

:05:31. > :05:33.Many residents are furious with the authorities for not providing better

:05:34. > :05:38.security. One of the leaders of the unity Government was at the funeral

:05:39. > :05:44.today, and I asked him why so many attacks seemed to be succeeding. I

:05:45. > :05:48.would say that we will raise this issue very seriously within our own

:05:49. > :05:51.system. You are not resigning? If that would have been the solution,

:05:52. > :05:55.that would have been the first thing I would have resorted to. Them is

:05:56. > :05:59.real anger here at the rising tide of violence, but it seems no one,

:06:00. > :06:00.not the Government and not the international community, knows how

:06:01. > :06:06.to stop it. He's a fellow with the Atlantic

:06:07. > :06:18.Council's South Asia Center. He joins me live from Washington. A

:06:19. > :06:29.tragic few days in Afghanistan. As the Government lost control of the

:06:30. > :06:32.country? They have been fighting the insurgency on multiple fronts. It is

:06:33. > :06:39.not just the Taliban that are active in Afghanistan, but according to the

:06:40. > :06:49.top US commander in the country, there are at least 20 other militant

:06:50. > :06:53.terrorist groups active in Afghanistan and Pakistan in the last

:06:54. > :07:04.couple of years. At least 20 of them are involved in breast activities in

:07:05. > :07:12.the country, including an affiliate of Islamic State. Their results of a

:07:13. > :07:18.Pakistan -based network which Afghan intelligence has said was behind the

:07:19. > :07:26.recent truck bombing in central Kabul on Wednesday. Needless to say

:07:27. > :07:32.that this year and last have been the years of survival for the Afghan

:07:33. > :07:36.Government. Often times, their ability to take on each of the

:07:37. > :07:41.insurgent groups that operate in the country and be effective at it is

:07:42. > :07:47.overstretched, but it does not mean they are losing control over their

:07:48. > :08:05.security situation. We saw in our report that

:08:06. > :08:32.The Government controls much of the territory, but occasional attacks in

:08:33. > :08:39.places like Kabul and other urban areas do happen. The reasons behind

:08:40. > :08:44.it is attributed to a failure of intelligence on the Afghan part. The

:08:45. > :08:49.Afghan security forces are also on the front line and they are fighting

:08:50. > :08:56.very bravely, which has also led to an alarming number of casualties.

:08:57. > :09:03.The Afghan Government has ruled out a new security plan to work on the

:09:04. > :09:07.effectiveness of the Afghan security forces, including building the

:09:08. > :09:11.offensive capabilities of the force and improving its leadership, which

:09:12. > :09:16.I think will prove very useful in the months ahead in the fight

:09:17. > :09:22.against the Taliban. This year will be a challenging one nonetheless,

:09:23. > :09:29.for both the the goverment and security forces, with setbacks in

:09:30. > :09:33.like Kabul. Unfortunately, it seems that before the situation gets

:09:34. > :09:36.better, it is likely to get worse. Thank you very much for being with

:09:37. > :09:39.BBC World. Let's take a look at some of

:09:40. > :09:42.the other stories making the news. The US Defence Secretary,

:09:43. > :09:44.James Mattis, says China's actions in the South China Sea show

:09:45. > :09:46.a 'blatant disregard to the militarisation

:09:47. > :09:51.of international waters and contribute

:09:52. > :09:57.to instability in the region. A worldwide clinical trial has

:09:58. > :10:00.reduced the risk of dying from prostate cancer

:10:01. > :10:08.by nearly forty percent. The trial is believed to be

:10:09. > :10:10.the largest of its kind. And uses a drug to stop more

:10:11. > :10:13.testosterone reaching the prostate An outdoor music festival in Germany

:10:14. > :10:18.has resumed after a terror threat Organisers say they were given

:10:19. > :10:22.the go-ahead after an intensive search of the area found no evidence

:10:23. > :10:30.of a concrete threat. It's less than a week before the UK

:10:31. > :10:33.general election and the ruling Conservatives are coming under

:10:34. > :10:38.pressure over their tax plans. The opposition Labour Party -

:10:39. > :10:41.gaining in the polls - says the wealthy are being protected

:10:42. > :10:44.from tax rises at the expense of the poor, a charge

:10:45. > :10:46.the Government strongly denies. Senior Conservatives, including

:10:47. > :10:59.the Defence Secretary and Foreign Secretary, have been sending

:11:00. > :11:01.out a strong message If you are worried that income tax

:11:02. > :11:05.might rise if we are elected, don't The Conservative manifesto

:11:06. > :11:10.is nowhere near as explicit. What people will know

:11:11. > :11:19.when they've vote on Thursday, it is the Conservative Party who

:11:20. > :11:22.always has and is a low tax party. It is our intention to reduce taxes

:11:23. > :11:29.for ordinary working families. What does the Conservative

:11:30. > :11:31.manifesto say on tax question at the last election

:11:32. > :11:37.David Cameron promise not to increase income tax,

:11:38. > :11:39.national insurance or VAT. The 2017 manifesto,

:11:40. > :11:41.only the Pledge on VAT Promising to raise the level

:11:42. > :11:52.at which people pay the standard and higher amount of tax

:11:53. > :11:55.would also amount to a reduction. Theresa May could have

:11:56. > :11:56.tough Brexit talks ahead. There is no pledge not to increase

:11:57. > :12:08.income tax was that she and her colleagues are talking

:12:09. > :12:17.about tax today because they want to refocus attention in this campaign

:12:18. > :12:19.about what would happen if a Labour Chancellor moves into

:12:20. > :12:21.number 11 Downing Street. Labour says the policy of making

:12:22. > :12:29.the better off and big businesses pay more is popular

:12:30. > :12:30.and the There is chaos going

:12:31. > :12:38.on at the top of the What Labour is offering

:12:39. > :12:42.is no tax rises or An increase in

:12:43. > :12:46.corporation tax and some other tax increases at the top end

:12:47. > :12:50.to pay for social care. Theresa May could be

:12:51. > :13:07.finding it is more convivial to talk about

:13:08. > :13:09.tax than social care. colleagues are trying

:13:10. > :13:12.to stir the enthusiasm of traditional voters

:13:13. > :13:12.by saying instincts on

:13:13. > :13:19.taxation are the same. Ariana Grande has made a surprise

:13:20. > :13:38.visit to fans still in hospital after last month's concert attack.

:13:39. > :13:48.The moment of crowning. By a signal given, the great guns of the tower.

:13:49. > :14:01.Tanks and troops are patrolling the streets of central Peking after...

:14:02. > :14:14.You can see it's mighty tail fin, the only sign left that an aircraft

:14:15. > :14:20.had been here. Uefa imposes an indefinite ban on English clubs

:14:21. > :14:26.playing in Europe. Today is the 20th anniversary of the release of the

:14:27. > :14:36.Beatles LP, Sergeant Pepper 's lonely hearts club band.

:14:37. > :14:52.Dozens of civilians are reported to have been killed in the Iraqi city

:14:53. > :14:56.of Mosul while trying to get out of an area controlled by the Islamic

:14:57. > :15:01.State group. India has promised to go above and

:15:02. > :15:04.beyond and cut its pledged under the Paris climate accord following the

:15:05. > :15:05.United States' withdrawal from the treaty.

:15:06. > :15:07.Is Russia interfering with US politics?

:15:08. > :15:09.It's the question hanging over Washington ever

:15:10. > :15:14.Moscow has always denied involvement.

:15:15. > :15:16.Those Russians whose names have emerged usually

:15:17. > :15:22.But this week some were at the annual St Petersburg Economic Forum.

:15:23. > :15:24.Our correspondent Sarah Rainsford was there, attempting

:15:25. > :16:03.Can I just ask what it is you would like

:16:04. > :16:34.Sarah Rainsford on the alleged Russian links to the Trump campaign.

:16:35. > :16:37.So, over in America, where has the investigation

:16:38. > :16:45.I asked our correspondent David Willis.

:16:46. > :16:52.Next Thursday, the former director of the FBI, James Comey, is due to

:16:53. > :16:58.give evidence to a Senate committee. This is the man who was leading the

:16:59. > :17:01.investigation into links between the Trump administration and the

:17:02. > :17:09.Russians before he was dismissed last month by Donald Trump. Now, any

:17:10. > :17:17.evidence from his testimony that Donald Trump has sought to impede

:17:18. > :17:21.that enquiry will be seized upon by opponents of the president. It had

:17:22. > :17:26.been thought that perhaps the White House might seek executive privilege

:17:27. > :17:32.to prevent James Comey from testifying. They can do that if a

:17:33. > :17:37.Government official is threatening to reveal secrets, but the downside

:17:38. > :17:40.of that, of course, is that the White House then looks as though it

:17:41. > :17:46.has something to hide, so no indication at the moment that it is

:17:47. > :17:51.going to do that. Meanwhile, a lot of speculation about the possible

:17:52. > :17:56.role played by the President's son-in-law, Jared Kushner, in this

:17:57. > :18:02.whole ongoing Russian investigation. Tell us more about Jared Kushner. He

:18:03. > :18:07.is a person of interest. That's right. Yes, and he is a man who is

:18:08. > :18:11.very close to the president, of course, the son-in-law of President

:18:12. > :18:19.Trump, but also a special adviser to Mr Trump. It has been reported here

:18:20. > :18:27.that he had meetings with the Russian ambassador to the US, and to

:18:28. > :18:30.a Russian banker with close ties to the Russian president, Vladimir

:18:31. > :18:38.Putin. There are also suggestions that Mr Kushner explore the

:18:39. > :18:44.possibility of setting up a secure communications channel using a

:18:45. > :18:49.Russian diplomatic facility to enable discussions between the Trump

:18:50. > :18:54.Administration and Moscow, the suggestion being as well that these

:18:55. > :18:58.meetings between the Russians and Mr Kushner took place in December of

:18:59. > :19:03.last year, after Donald Trump add won the election but before his

:19:04. > :19:07.administration had actually taken office.

:19:08. > :19:12.The singer Ariana Grande has made a surprise visit to fans

:19:13. > :19:13.still in hospital after last month's terror attack.

:19:14. > :19:16.On Sunday she'll be joined by other music stars,

:19:17. > :19:19.in a charity concert to raise money for the victims and their families.

:19:20. > :19:24.From Manchester, Philip Norton reports.

:19:25. > :19:26.Helping to mend broken hearts and shattered lives.

:19:27. > :19:28.Pop star Ariana Grande visiting young fans who were injured

:19:29. > :19:31.in the suicide bomb attack at her concert less

:19:32. > :19:40.She posted a photo of her visit to Royal Manchester Children's Hospital

:19:41. > :19:45.Among those she visited, eight-year-old fan Lily Harrison.

:19:46. > :19:50.She suffered spinal injuries in the blast at Manchester Arena.

:19:51. > :19:53.Our room was the last room on the ward of the corridor.

:19:54. > :19:59.I think I was probably just as nervous as Lily.

:20:00. > :20:06.She said, I think I might need to go to the toilet.

:20:07. > :20:11.And then, yeah, she just came skipping onto our ward.

:20:12. > :20:15.There's been an outpouring of love for the 22 victims who died

:20:16. > :20:21.Ariana Grande has returned to the UK for a benefit concert in Manchester

:20:22. > :20:23.tomorrow night and many of those injured, including Lily,

:20:24. > :20:34.We said, if you want to go, we'll make sure you've got tickets.

:20:35. > :20:37.If we get to the venue, or are on the way to the venue,

:20:38. > :20:40.and you say you don't want to go, we're more than happy

:20:41. > :20:44.Proceeds from the concert will go towards that We Love

:20:45. > :20:47.Manchester Emergency Fund, set up by Manchester City Council

:20:48. > :20:49.and the British Red Cross to support grieving families

:20:50. > :21:00.A huge stage and tight security is in place.

:21:01. > :21:03.An effort that would normally take months of planning

:21:04. > :21:08.This is where the eyes of the world will be focused tomorrow night.

:21:09. > :21:12.Millions of people will watch as Ariana Grande is joined on stage

:21:13. > :21:15.by the likes of Coldplay, Take That and Katy Perry.

:21:16. > :21:18.This concert will be broadcast tomorrow in 50 countries

:21:19. > :21:37.A night of unity, remembrance and a shared love of music.

:21:38. > :21:46.Lets get some sport with Hugh. A big match in Cardiff?

:21:47. > :21:48.That's right the first man to score in three Champions League finals has

:21:49. > :21:54.set his team on the road to history, and he has done it twice for Real

:21:55. > :21:58.Madrid in Cardiff. Cristiano Ronaldo struck his first for Real Madrid in

:21:59. > :22:04.the 20th minute, his side helping to be the first team to win the

:22:05. > :22:07.Champions League twice in a row. Then the Juventus equalised with a

:22:08. > :22:11.brilliant overhead kick, a stunning goal that may well have been the

:22:12. > :22:16.headline if it wasn't for what happened subsequently. It brought

:22:17. > :22:33.Juventus level at the time but then to goals in a few minutes change

:22:34. > :22:38.things. There are about 30 minutes of normal time left, and a lot for

:22:39. > :22:43.Juventus to do. They are trailing 3-1 in Cardiff.

:22:44. > :22:47.The world number one is safely into the second week at the French Open

:22:48. > :22:50.tennis after beating Juan Martin del Potro in the third round at Roland

:22:51. > :22:55.Garros, getting the better of two fiercely contested opening sets.

:22:56. > :23:00.Murray won the first on a tie-break, then the second 7-5, then he

:23:01. > :23:11.clinched his place in the last 16 in impressive style, taking the third

:23:12. > :23:18.set without dropping a game. It is a big win for the eve. It was

:23:19. > :23:25.never going to be easy today. He is a tough guy to play against,

:23:26. > :23:29.especially this early in a major. He came out playing very aggressive,

:23:30. > :23:32.serving really well at the beginning and it was tough, but I managed to

:23:33. > :23:39.turn it around and play some really good stuff at the end, so it was a

:23:40. > :23:42.very positive win for me. South Africa have beating Sri Lanka by 96

:23:43. > :23:53.runs in the opening match in group B. South Africa made 299-6, Hashim

:23:54. > :24:05.Amla scoring a 25th ODI century in his career. The Sri Lankan batting

:24:06. > :24:10.was all-out for 203. The British and Irish Lion started their tour of New

:24:11. > :24:16.Zealand with a 17-13 victory over the Barbarians. It was expected to

:24:17. > :24:25.be straightforward with a side made up of fringe players. The barbarians

:24:26. > :24:28.had a 7-3 lead at the break. The lions edged ahead on 53 minutes,

:24:29. > :24:31.then the conversion gave them a little bit of breathing space. They

:24:32. > :24:37.held on in the end for a scrappy victory.

:24:38. > :24:46.Britain's richest horse race, the Epsom Derby, has been won by the

:24:47. > :24:49.40-1 outsider Wings Of Eagles, who came from behind, passing several

:24:50. > :24:58.horses in the last 100 metres to win. It was the first win for the

:24:59. > :25:00.Irish jockey, and the sixth for his trainer, Aidan O'Brien. That is all

:25:01. > :25:09.the sport for now. Don't forget you can get

:25:10. > :25:13.in touch with me and some
