:00:09. > :00:13.British Prime Minister Theresa May says

:00:14. > :00:16.support for people caught up in London's Grenfell Tower disaster

:00:17. > :00:36.58 people are missing and now presumed dead.

:00:37. > :00:42.That number may increase, but I really hope it will not.

:00:43. > :00:51.A mistrial - that's the ruling in the sexual assault case

:00:52. > :00:54.We can never underestimate the blinding power of celebrity, but

:00:55. > :00:57.justice will come. Also in the programme,

:00:58. > :00:59.all the sport, including the latest from the third round of the US

:01:00. > :01:17.Open golf. Police say 58 people are now

:01:18. > :01:22.presumed to have died in the fire at Grenfell Tower

:01:23. > :01:25.in West London. They've also said that the death

:01:26. > :01:29.toll is again likely to rise. She has faced criticism

:01:30. > :01:32.over her role in the tragedy, but today, Theresa May met victims

:01:33. > :01:35.of the fire at Downing Street amid criticism of the government's

:01:36. > :01:49.handling of the tragedy. The Prime Minister has released a

:01:50. > :01:54.statement acknowledging what many local people have been saying for

:01:55. > :01:55.days, that the response was not good enough.

:01:56. > :02:01.This report is from our correspondent, Jeremy Cooke.

:02:02. > :02:03.In the midsummer heat, Grenfell Tower casts a long shadow.

:02:04. > :02:05.A new dark reality on the London skyline,

:02:06. > :02:07.with the power to shock, and to move.

:02:08. > :02:10.A sight which stops you in your tracks.

:02:11. > :02:22.Everyone's busy talking, but yet you can just feel a silence.

:02:23. > :02:29.Four days on from disaster, and with every

:02:30. > :02:40.Sadly, at this time, there are 58 people who we were told...

:02:41. > :02:43.We have been told were in Grenfell Tower on

:02:44. > :02:49.the night, that are missing, and therefore sadly I have to assume

:02:50. > :02:57.The investigations into how this happened will be complex and

:02:58. > :03:00.lengthy, but the residents' association for Grenfell Tower and

:03:01. > :03:03.the surrounding blocks is already calling for the Council and its

:03:04. > :03:06.management agency to be suspended from their

:03:07. > :03:12.Andrea Newton says the community felt ignored before

:03:13. > :03:17.the tragedy, neglected since, with no access to basic information.

:03:18. > :03:21.What are they getting next, where will they move,

:03:22. > :03:26.These are fundamental questions, and we are days after this disaster.

:03:27. > :03:35.Today the residents brought those frustrations to

:03:36. > :03:39.Downing Street, asking for more help on the ground.

:03:40. > :03:43.And there have been reassurances from ministers.

:03:44. > :03:46.There is now from today on the ground

:03:47. > :03:50.a central operation precisely to answer all those, you know,

:03:51. > :03:52.perfectly reasonable questions that people have in these

:03:53. > :03:59.A perfectly clear message but still, on the street,

:04:00. > :04:07.What we are seeing here is an aid effort run by local people.

:04:08. > :04:09.We are told there will be a more official

:04:10. > :04:12.response to what has happened, but on the ground, there is very

:04:13. > :04:16.little evidence of that. Amanda, you are doing all you can.

:04:17. > :04:21.Have you seen any Government people, local council people?

:04:22. > :04:25.No, I haven't. I haven't seen anyone at all.

:04:26. > :04:27.We have been here since the morning and have not

:04:28. > :04:33.The only Government or council vehicles I have seen are the

:04:34. > :04:36.refuse lorries, coming up and down the street.

:04:37. > :04:44.The pain here is plain to see, and the community strength too,

:04:45. > :04:48.and the determination to come together and to overcome.

:04:49. > :04:58.Jeremy Cooke, BBC News, North Kensington.

:04:59. > :05:01.In the last few hours, the Prime Minister has

:05:02. > :05:04.It said - "The response of the emergency services, NHS, and the

:05:05. > :05:12.But frankly, the support on the ground

:05:13. > :05:15.for families who needed help or basic information in the initial

:05:16. > :05:20.hours after this appalling disaster was not good enough.

:05:21. > :05:23.There have been huge frustrations that people do not

:05:24. > :05:33.know who to talk to, that they can't get through on the council hotlines.

:05:34. > :05:35.Earlier, I spoke to our political correspondent, Alex Forsyth, and

:05:36. > :05:38.began by asking her about whether the Prime Minister's statement

:05:39. > :05:42.There has been anger, and a lot of frustration from some

:05:43. > :05:45.members of the local community at what they see

:05:46. > :05:46.as an inadequate response to what has

:05:47. > :05:48.happened, not just from the

:05:49. > :05:50.Government but also from the local authority, Kensington and Chelsea

:05:51. > :05:55.Theresa May was personally criticised for not

:05:56. > :05:57.meeting residents and victims affected by this incident soon

:05:58. > :06:02.In the past few days, she visited a hospital yesterday, and

:06:03. > :06:07.today she hosted this meeting in Downing Street.

:06:08. > :06:11.I am told that these actions she has now come out with a

:06:12. > :06:16.direct response to what she has been hearing from people on the ground.

:06:17. > :06:18.which is why we have seen the Prime Minister announced

:06:19. > :06:21.that ?5 million emergency fund, which will start to be distributed

:06:22. > :06:24.That is for basic things like food, travel money.

:06:25. > :06:26.She has renewed the commitment to rehouse

:06:27. > :06:27.people within three weeks, in the local

:06:28. > :06:31.area if they want to, or as

:06:32. > :06:34.She has also talked about people on the

:06:35. > :06:36.ground in high viz jackets so that people

:06:37. > :06:37.have a point of contact, and

:06:38. > :06:40.the Prime Minister taking personal sponsor

:06:41. > :06:41.ability to ensure that the

:06:42. > :06:43.findings from the public enquiry into this incident are acted upon.

:06:44. > :06:46.Theresa May is trying to reassure people that the Government is doing

:06:47. > :06:58.what it can after it has had such criticism for its response so far.

:06:59. > :07:03.The message from the Government now is that they are trying to listen to

:07:04. > :07:09.the local community and do what they need. More than three days on from

:07:10. > :07:14.this fire, there seems to be little evidence that there is help on the

:07:15. > :07:18.ground for people who need it. Only this morning, we were still here and

:07:19. > :07:22.reports from people they are saying that the effort had been driven by

:07:23. > :07:27.the community rather than any of the authorities. That is what Theresa

:07:28. > :07:30.May is trying to address. She listened to that from residents in

:07:31. > :07:36.the meeting at Downing Street today which is why she came up with these

:07:37. > :07:39.specific actions. Damian Green, the first Secretary of State in the UK,

:07:40. > :07:43.to all intents and purposes, the Deputy Prime Minister, he said in an

:07:44. > :07:46.interview this morning that that help on the ground would start from

:07:47. > :07:51.today. There is a recognition that it does not been there to this

:07:52. > :07:54.point. The Government is saying they are acting on this now, they are

:07:55. > :07:58.acting on this and he will now see a difference. What remains to be seen

:07:59. > :08:03.is whether or not that now appears on the ground and whether or not

:08:04. > :08:07.that will satisfy residents in Kensington who feel that so far they

:08:08. > :08:09.have not had the support they need. The Government is trying to get on

:08:10. > :08:14.the front foot but still having to convince the community.

:08:15. > :08:17.The Queen has observed a minute's silence at the Trooping the Colour

:08:18. > :08:20.parade in memory of all those who died in Grenfell Tower

:08:21. > :08:25.and in the recent bombings in Manchester and London.

:08:26. > :08:26.Earlier, she issued an unprecedented statement

:08:27. > :08:30.- on what is her official birthday - in which she said it was

:08:31. > :08:32."difficult to escape the very sombre national mood".

:08:33. > :08:38.Our Royal correspondent, Nicholas Witchell, reports.

:08:39. > :08:41.On a day intended for celebration, the Queen led the nation in sorrow.

:08:42. > :08:44.Before leaving Buckingham Palace for Horse Guards, she stood with the

:08:45. > :08:45.Duke of Edinburgh for a minute's silence.

:08:46. > :08:48.A moment of reflection, joined by the footguards on the

:08:49. > :08:50.parade ground and the cavalry at the palace gates -

:08:51. > :08:54.in remembrance of those lost at Grenfell Tower, and in

:08:55. > :09:11.the terrorist attacks in London and Manchester.

:09:12. > :09:14.Yesterday she'd visited the scene of the fire at Grenfell Tower

:09:15. > :09:16.and met some of those who have lost friends and neighbours.

:09:17. > :09:18.It had clearly made a deep impression.

:09:19. > :09:21.In her statement she said, "I have been profoundly struck

:09:22. > :09:23.by the immediate inclination of people throughout the country

:09:24. > :09:25.to offer comfort and support to those in desperate need."

:09:26. > :09:48.The footguards marched and trooped the colour of the Irish Guards,

:09:49. > :09:52.and the Royal Family appeared on the palace balcony,

:09:53. > :09:54.where Prince George, as usual, stole the show,

:09:55. > :09:57.gazing down at the crowds, and then as the RAF fly-past appeared,

:09:58. > :10:04.This was a year when the head of state reflected the country's

:10:05. > :10:14.Nicholas Witchell, BBC News, at Buckingham Palace.

:10:15. > :10:17.A judge in the United States has declared a mis-trial in the sexual

:10:18. > :10:19.assault case against entertainer Bill Cosby.

:10:20. > :10:23.The jury failed to reach a consensus on all three counts,

:10:24. > :10:33.after more than 50 hours of deliberations.

:10:34. > :10:38.The prosecution says it will seek a retrial.

:10:39. > :10:40.The 79-year-old actor had denied drugging and sexually

:10:41. > :10:42.assaulting a woman at his home 13 years ago.

:10:43. > :10:45.Our North America correspondent, Aleem Maqbool, reports.

:10:46. > :10:48.After so many accused him of being a calculating sexual predator,

:10:49. > :10:50.Bill Cosby is free now to go home from court.

:10:51. > :10:53.The jury didn't acquit him, but they could not unanimously

:10:54. > :11:01.We came here looking for an acquittal, but like that

:11:02. > :11:03.Rolling Stones says, you don't always get what you want -

:11:04. > :11:07.God bless you all, and happy Father's Day.

:11:08. > :11:17.The mistrial was celebrated like a victory by Cosby's supporters.

:11:18. > :11:20.What do you say to the 60 women came forward and accused him...

:11:21. > :11:26.Back in his heyday, Bill Cosby was the most prominent

:11:27. > :11:28.African-American, the highest-paid actor, and undoubtedly

:11:29. > :11:36.Of the dozens of women who came forward saying

:11:37. > :11:39.he sexually assaulted them, most couldn't go to trial

:11:40. > :11:43.because it was so long since the alleged incidents took place.

:11:44. > :11:47.One case was heard in court, though, brought by Andrea Constand,

:11:48. > :11:51.a former university employee who claims that in 2004 he drugged

:11:52. > :11:56.All of the jurors were not convinced.

:11:57. > :12:00.For now, Bill Cosby walks free, but there is the prospect

:12:01. > :12:03.he is going to be retried, and there is no question

:12:04. > :12:08.that in spite of this result his reputation as something

:12:09. > :12:18.of an American father figure has now been tarnished.

:12:19. > :12:21.Let's take a look at some of the other stories making the news.

:12:22. > :12:24.The Government of the Philippines says more than 300 people are known

:12:25. > :12:26.to have been killed in the battle against Islamist

:12:27. > :12:30.President Rodrigo Duterte says the presence of fighters

:12:31. > :12:35.from the so-called Islamic state had made it a brutal conflict.

:12:36. > :12:38.Police in Paris have arrested a man who's suspected of attacking

:12:39. > :12:43.a prominent centre-right candidate while she was campaigning for

:12:44. > :12:50.The former environment minister, was left unconscious for several

:12:51. > :12:54.minutes on Thursday after a man grabbed her election pamphlets

:12:55. > :12:59.and thrust them in her face, knocking her to the ground.

:13:00. > :13:04.More than 100,000 events occurred across the UK

:13:05. > :13:07.to remember the Labour MP, Jo Cox, who was murdered a year ago.

:13:08. > :13:09.Her husband said she would be "incredibly humbled" by the events

:13:10. > :13:13.The Great Get Together was based on the message in Mrs Cox's

:13:14. > :13:24."we have more in common than that which divides us".

:13:25. > :13:29.An Egyptian court has recommended the death penalty for 30 people

:13:30. > :13:32.convicted of involvement in the killing of the country's

:13:33. > :13:37.Hisham Barakat died in a car bomb attack two years ago.

:13:38. > :13:40.The country's religious authorities will now decide whether to confirm

:13:41. > :13:43.the death sentences passed by the court.

:13:44. > :13:48.Our middle east regional editor, Alan Johnston, reports.

:13:49. > :13:58.A judge recommended the death penalty for

:13:59. > :13:59.all those charged, and now the religious

:14:00. > :14:03.authorities will be asked to approve the verdict.

:14:04. > :14:05.It was handed down for the killing of

:14:06. > :14:10.He was appointed as Egypt's most senior

:14:11. > :14:22.prosecutor at a time of extraordinary tension, back in 2013.

:14:23. > :14:25.There were mass protests in the streets of Cairo by supporters of

:14:26. > :14:27.the ousted Muslim Brotherhood- backed president, Mohamed Morsi.

:14:28. > :14:29.This dissent was crushed, and in his judicial capacity,

:14:30. > :14:32.Hisham Barakat was involved in prosecuting thousands of

:14:33. > :14:36.Islamists. He would have been loathed

:14:37. > :14:40.by opponents of the ruling establishment.

:14:41. > :14:43.This is where Mr Barakat's enemies killed him.

:14:44. > :14:48.He was the highest-ranking Egyptian Government official to be

:14:49. > :14:52.assassinated by militants in recent years.

:14:53. > :14:55.The authorities blamed his killing on the Muslim Brotherhood

:14:56. > :14:58.Both groups denied being responsible.

:14:59. > :15:16.Stay with us on BBC World News, still to come -

:15:17. > :15:19.More on the aftermath of London's deadly fire -

:15:20. > :15:21.we'll hear from someone who is helping with

:15:22. > :15:23.the volunteer effort - and who is calling for calm

:15:24. > :16:46.British Prime Minister Theresa May says support for people caught up

:16:47. > :16:50.in London's Grenfell Tower disaster "wasn't good enough".

:16:51. > :16:57.58 are missing and now presumed dead.

:16:58. > :16:59.My colleague Ben Brown has spent the day in Kensington just

:17:00. > :17:02.next to Grenfell Tower, where local people are helping

:17:03. > :17:05.one another cope with the effects of the fire.

:17:06. > :17:07.He spoke to one of them, Swarzy Macaly, a volunteer who's

:17:08. > :17:12.helping with the emergency effort and asked her how things were going.

:17:13. > :17:18.It is going really well. Volunteers are in high spirits and doing

:17:19. > :17:21.everything they can to put everything into storage. But I just

:17:22. > :17:25.wanted to touch upon your point where we are calling for people to

:17:26. > :17:34.become, and there are loads of peace ceremony is being conducted, and

:17:35. > :17:39.just a few words, we want to be peacemakers acres there is enough

:17:40. > :17:42.grief and we do not want that to be confused by that your kindness is

:17:43. > :17:46.taken forward this. This is an atrocity that should not have

:17:47. > :17:50.happened but we want to respond in love so that those who are grieving

:17:51. > :17:55.feel loved by the community. To you understand the anger you have seen

:17:56. > :18:00.in the last day or so? Definitely, and there needs to be answers, there

:18:01. > :18:04.needs to be a response to that, but if you are just here at this scene,

:18:05. > :18:08.so many people are grieving and weeping that I do not think lashing

:18:09. > :18:12.out... The news and the press do a great job, but yesterday was not a

:18:13. > :18:17.true reflection of what happened. I was at a church and all we did all

:18:18. > :18:20.day was boxed up thousands of boxes to send for storage, and all over

:18:21. > :18:24.the news is riots and kicking down doors. That is not a true

:18:25. > :18:28.reflection. If you are on the ground, you know what the community

:18:29. > :18:32.spirit is, and it is in the hands of the press to show a balanced view.

:18:33. > :18:36.Yes, people are angry, but also people are loving. We have been

:18:37. > :18:41.trying to showing credible effort from the community to deliver aid,

:18:42. > :18:47.to bring in aid, you have got enough supplies no. We have got too many

:18:48. > :18:50.supplies now! We want to see a massive thank you to van drivers,

:18:51. > :18:55.people opening up storage and homes. I would love to get a conversation

:18:56. > :18:59.going between storage and donation centres because I have not seen any

:19:00. > :19:03.council members, and we are doing this very organically, but we are

:19:04. > :19:07.doing our best to lead a community, but we are still morning very much.

:19:08. > :19:11.That is one of the issues, we have heard that people are still sleeping

:19:12. > :19:15.on floors, people who have been made homeless, and also this Government

:19:16. > :19:18.task force, which has been created, is supposed to be on the ground

:19:19. > :19:28.today. Have you seen any evidence that? Note, but there is a lot of

:19:29. > :19:32.talk of community, people saying that we are in the richest borough,

:19:33. > :19:35.people could just purchase a block and house people. It is not as

:19:36. > :19:40.straightforward as that, but people on the ground are thinking, why, it

:19:41. > :19:47.is not just happen? We just want things to get done. A few days after

:19:48. > :19:51.this disaster, it is such a difficult time, the grief is still

:19:52. > :19:58.so raw, because not everybody knows what happened to their loved ones in

:19:59. > :20:01.that building. Yes, and one of the ladies who was really grieving, and

:20:02. > :20:06.the grief is understandable, we are not saying you cannot grieve,

:20:07. > :20:08.because of course you see all the information going out, but actually,

:20:09. > :20:15.I would like to encourage people to have people in grief. People are

:20:16. > :20:22.very end in need of a hug and consolation, so a bottle of water

:20:23. > :20:24.and a hug, and in well. One very passionate volunteer helping the

:20:25. > :20:40.victims of the Grenfell Tower fire disaster.

:20:41. > :20:42.Seven US crew members are missing after an American warship collided

:20:43. > :20:45.with a Philippine container ship off the East coast of Japan.

:20:46. > :20:47.The USS Fitzgerald, which has now arrived back at port,

:20:48. > :20:50.crashed into the Phillipine vessel in the middle of the night.

:20:51. > :20:53.It was heading for the nearby port of Yo-koss-ka under its own power.

:20:54. > :20:55.It's believed that the ship's commanding officer is

:20:56. > :21:04.People have been evacuated for treatment. It looks like it was an

:21:05. > :21:10.outsider attack. An Afghan soldier was killed and another was wounded.

:21:11. > :21:14.A few days ago, we had a similar incident, three American soldiers

:21:15. > :21:18.were killed in the eastern part of the country. Mostly such attacks are

:21:19. > :21:23.claimed by the Taliban and the claim is that they are infiltrators. Our

:21:24. > :21:28.people, who make their way into the Army and wait for an occasion or

:21:29. > :21:33.opportunity to carry out such attacks, and at times they are

:21:34. > :21:40.normal soldiers who, for whatever reason, reasons can vary, turn their

:21:41. > :21:45.gun at their American partners. They are either influenced by the Taliban

:21:46. > :21:59.ideology or for other reasons. Lets get some sport for you now.

:22:00. > :22:10.Charlie Hoffman leads the leaderboard at the U.S. Open. Tommy

:22:11. > :22:12.Fleetwood and Rickie Fowler are both still in contention. Brooks cocker

:22:13. > :22:30.and Justin Thomas are also there. Leigh Halfpenny kicked the British

:22:31. > :22:35.and Irish Lions into a half-time lead, the Lions forwards dominating

:22:36. > :22:46.the second half, and a penalty try saw them take the Maori all Blacks

:22:47. > :22:56.apart any scrum. It had been a mixed tour for the Lions before the alive

:22:57. > :23:02.the -- arrived here. To beat a side like the Maori All Blacks was a big

:23:03. > :23:12.statement. The forward pack was excellent, the driving force behind
