:01:05. > :01:07.Hello and welcome to World News Today.

:01:08. > :01:09.France's President, Emanuel Macron, has promised that his country

:01:10. > :01:12.will never forget the names of the victims of the Bastille Day

:01:13. > :01:17.attack in Nice, which happened a year ago today.

:01:18. > :01:20.86 people died when an extremist drove a truck into crowds

:01:21. > :01:25.who'd gathered to watch a firework display.

:01:26. > :01:31.One of the highlights of the commemorations

:01:32. > :01:34.in Nice was this board, showing the names of the victims.

:01:35. > :01:41.It was made up of a mosaic applied by relatives of those who died.

:01:42. > :01:43.Mr Macron attended the ceremony in the southern French city

:01:44. > :01:46.after leading the French national day celebrations in Paris, where

:01:47. > :01:50.Our Paris correspondent, Lucy Williamson, has

:01:51. > :02:07.Today's events were not about the ties between men

:02:08. > :02:10.Even so, the growing personal alliance between Donald Trump

:02:11. > :02:15.They were joined as symbols of their two nations by Armed Forces

:02:16. > :02:17.from both America and France, beginning with a fly-past

:02:18. > :02:25.Their soldiers led the parade together,

:02:26. > :02:27.in tribute to America's role in World War I.

:02:28. > :02:30.The US is an ally of theirs, sometimes you don't think

:02:31. > :02:36.so, but France is there for us and we are there for them.

:02:37. > :02:39.I did not vote for President Trump but he is the president

:02:40. > :02:44.Speaking to crowds in central Paris, Emmanuel Macron thanked the US

:02:45. > :02:47.for the choice it had made a century ago, and said that France

:02:48. > :03:04.with a military band playing music by Daft Punk.

:03:05. > :03:06.The changing culture here is mirrored by

:03:07. > :03:13.The security threats have changed over the past few years,

:03:14. > :03:15.repeated terror attacks have refocused attention on safety

:03:16. > :03:23.at home and the values that France has chosen to protect.

:03:24. > :03:26.The ceremony ended with a military band playing the city anthem

:03:27. > :03:29.of Nice, scene of the last major terror attack in the country

:03:30. > :03:36.Tributes were laid in Nice to the 86 people who died in the attack

:03:37. > :03:55.This afternoon, President Macron flew from Paris, to join

:03:56. > :03:59.The debate still hangs over this country as it pays tribute

:04:00. > :04:05.today to its values, its history, to the idea of France.

:04:06. > :04:12.Journalist David Chazan joins us from Paris.

:04:13. > :04:20.This has been a real day of reflection for the country, starting

:04:21. > :04:24.with the morning's offence with that huge military parade, a real display

:04:25. > :04:30.of friendship after a rocky start between Emmanuel Macron and Donald

:04:31. > :04:34.Trump. What do you think of the relationship now? It has fastly

:04:35. > :04:39.improved. When you think back to when they first met and they had

:04:40. > :04:43.that white knuckle handshake when Mr Macron was clearly determined to be

:04:44. > :04:50.just as physically vigorous as Mr Trump often is in shaking hands, not

:04:51. > :04:54.letting Mr Trump's hand go. It is not that long ago since Mr Trump

:04:55. > :04:58.said he would never visit Paris because it was not Paris any more

:04:59. > :05:04.because the authorities had not done enough to stop terrorist attacks.

:05:05. > :05:09.That has all changed. They appeared together repeatedly and Mr Trump

:05:10. > :05:13.described Paris is one of the world's most beautiful cities, it is

:05:14. > :05:22.peaceful and he said he would come back. Mr Macron, his wife, Mr Trump

:05:23. > :05:27.and his wife had dinner at a restaurant in the Eiffel Tower which

:05:28. > :05:33.was a tremendous opportunity for Mr Macron to showcase Paris and France

:05:34. > :05:37.as a tourist destination because one of the economic effects of the

:05:38. > :05:42.series of attacks that France has suffered in the last couple of years

:05:43. > :05:48.has been a fall in the number of tourists. The authorities are very

:05:49. > :05:52.determined to show that it is safe to visit France, and I think Mr

:05:53. > :05:59.Trump's visit has helped enormously with that as well as asserting

:06:00. > :06:04.French influence in the world and giving Mr Macron a chance to show

:06:05. > :06:11.that France is a big military power with that big parade by the Armed

:06:12. > :06:15.Forces this morning. And of course you talk about the security concerns

:06:16. > :06:23.of the country. We are a year after that horrific attack in Nice and a

:06:24. > :06:27.devastating attack, 86 people lost their lives. Today we saw the

:06:28. > :06:30.ceremonies and poignancy of me is trying to come to terms with what

:06:31. > :06:37.happened a year on, how is Nice coping? The were very sombre

:06:38. > :06:42.ceremonies today and the mood is one of sadness. I went in Nice the day

:06:43. > :06:48.after the attack last year and I stayed there for ten days, and it

:06:49. > :06:52.struck me that many people told me they were extremely angry because

:06:53. > :06:58.they thought that the attack had been able to happen because of

:06:59. > :07:02.security failings, because the authorities had not deployed enough

:07:03. > :07:06.police, they had not made sure that the lorry that was used to plough

:07:07. > :07:12.into crowds of people could not get into that area because there are

:07:13. > :07:18.local rules in Nice prohibiting heavy vehicles from being in that

:07:19. > :07:25.area, and I went back to Nice a few weeks ago and a lot of people said

:07:26. > :07:30.they remained angry. But President Macron did a very good job today of

:07:31. > :07:37.addressing some of the concerns. He was not in office when the attack

:07:38. > :07:41.happened. He reassured people that the government would not turn its

:07:42. > :07:45.back on those that had been affected by the attack and they would do

:07:46. > :07:51.everything in their power to stop attacks like this happening again.

:07:52. > :08:00.Always good to talk to you, David. Thank you very much. Donald Trump

:08:01. > :08:02.had been in Europe earlier on in the week as well.

:08:03. > :08:05.Well, President Trump is on his way back home,

:08:06. > :08:07.where a barrage of questions about his son await.

:08:08. > :08:09.That is because of new revelations that a former Soviet

:08:10. > :08:11.spy was in the room when Donald Trump Junior met

:08:12. > :08:15.a Russian lawyer during last year's presidential campaign.

:08:16. > :08:18.I asked my colleague in Washington, Jane O'Brien, to bring us up to date

:08:19. > :08:27.with the latest developments on this rapidly changing news story.

:08:28. > :08:34.When this story broke, the meeting was supposed to have been about

:08:35. > :08:38.adoption, whether or not Americans could adopt Russian babies, at least

:08:39. > :08:43.that is what Donald Trump Junior said. But as the days one, the

:08:44. > :08:46.stories started shifting because the New York Times kept finding out more

:08:47. > :08:50.and more and when it became clear they would publish another story

:08:51. > :08:56.revealing that in fact the whole purpose of the meeting was to find

:08:57. > :09:00.dirt on Hillary Clinton, Donald Trump Junior scooped the New York

:09:01. > :09:04.Times and published e-mail exchanges he had with this Russian lawyer or

:09:05. > :09:10.at least the person who had set up the meeting. Now it transpires that

:09:11. > :09:17.another person was in the room and this person is a US citizen but

:09:18. > :09:21.Russian born and had ties to the Russian intelligence. So the plot

:09:22. > :09:27.thickens, it becomes more murky, and the big question of all is how much

:09:28. > :09:33.did Donald Trump 's senior, the President of the United States, know

:09:34. > :09:38.about this meeting? Did it constitute any form of collusion or

:09:39. > :09:42.was it as the Trumps are trying to say just a run-of-the-mill meeting

:09:43. > :09:46.to find out what they could about the opposition? There are so many

:09:47. > :09:51.questions. The Democrats are applying pressure on the Trump

:09:52. > :09:56.administration, but so are the Republicans increasingly. And this

:09:57. > :10:01.is the big problem for the Trump administration because, as all of

:10:02. > :10:05.this is unfolding, you have the Senate on Capitol Hill trying to

:10:06. > :10:09.work through a highly contentious health care reform bill. Mitch

:10:10. > :10:12.McConnell of the Senate leader has already told them they cannot go on

:10:13. > :10:21.the vacation until they sort this out. That is what they want to focus

:10:22. > :10:23.on. In the meantime, all of this suspicion and speculation about

:10:24. > :10:28.Russia continues to engulf the White House, which means that Donald Trump

:10:29. > :10:34.is not giving any guidance to legislation such as the health care

:10:35. > :10:37.reform. It is a massive distraction and Republicans have had to deal

:10:38. > :10:42.with this ever since they took office and they are becoming sick

:10:43. > :10:43.and tired of it. The issue is, at what point do they break ranks and

:10:44. > :10:47.say, enough is enough? Two foreign nationals have been

:10:48. > :10:49.killed and four others wounded after being stabbed by a man

:10:50. > :10:52.at a holiday resort in Egypt. The attack took place

:10:53. > :10:55.at the Red Sea resort of Hurghada. The authorities say the two

:10:56. > :10:58.killed were German. Initial reports had

:10:59. > :11:01.identified them as Ukrainian. The latest reports say two

:11:02. > :11:06.of the wounded are Czech nationals. Authorities say the assailant

:11:07. > :11:08.has been arrested. What we know so far is that

:11:09. > :11:14.two ladies were killed. According to the governor

:11:15. > :11:17.of the Red Sea, they were I mean, they were not

:11:18. > :11:22.coming for a short visit, but We also know that four

:11:23. > :11:29.others have been wounded and they have already been admitted

:11:30. > :11:31.to a nearby hospital, where they are receiving treatment

:11:32. > :11:37.for their wounds. According to the Ministry

:11:38. > :11:39.of Interior, the attacker managed to sneak into the holiday resort

:11:40. > :11:42.through swimming from a nearby He stabbed six ladies before

:11:43. > :11:47.he got arrested, and he is currently being interrogated

:11:48. > :11:57.by police authorities. This is the second incident

:11:58. > :11:59.to happen in Hurghada. Last year, in January 2016,

:12:00. > :12:02.a couple of attackers managed At that time, these attackers were

:12:03. > :12:10.said to have Islamic sympathies. Up till now, we did not know

:12:11. > :12:12.what the motivations behind these attacks are,

:12:13. > :12:14.but they will definitely raise questions about how tight

:12:15. > :12:17.the security measures put in place at such an important

:12:18. > :12:23.tourist destination. And the big question will be

:12:24. > :12:26.about the impact that this will have on the tourism industry in Egypt

:12:27. > :12:29.as a whole, which is Here in London, two teenagers have

:12:30. > :12:38.been arrested after a series of acid Five people had acid

:12:39. > :12:41.thrown in their faces, One is said to have

:12:42. > :12:44.life-changing injuries. The attacks were carried out

:12:45. > :12:46.at five separate locations in east London, within the space

:12:47. > :12:54.of less than 90 minutes. This report, from our home affairs

:12:55. > :12:56.correspondent Daniel Sandford, contains some disturbing

:12:57. > :13:05.images from the start. In the aftermath of an acid

:13:06. > :13:07.attack last night... Police officers desperately trying

:13:08. > :13:15.to reduce the burning John Moody watched the whole thing

:13:16. > :13:26.from the window of his flat. And one of the officers said to him,

:13:27. > :13:33.quite firmly, "I'm going to pour this into your eyes,

:13:34. > :13:38.keep your eyes open." The guy did exactly

:13:39. > :13:40.what he was told because They were just dousing his head

:13:41. > :13:44.and his entire body with water, The attack on a 32-year-old moped

:13:45. > :13:48.driver here turned out to be the first of five over the next hour

:13:49. > :13:53.and a quarter, all in a small area of East London,

:13:54. > :13:57.all involving acid being thrown At every crime scene,

:13:58. > :14:03.the target had been driving a moped. A 24-year-old man here in Clapton

:14:04. > :14:07.was left with life-changing injuries The Prime Minister said

:14:08. > :14:12.the attacks were horrific. Police have arrested

:14:13. > :14:17.a 15-year-old and a 16-year-old. National statistics for acid attacks

:14:18. > :14:20.are hard to come by but in London, they have risen from 129,

:14:21. > :14:26.two years ago, to 224, last year, and by April this year,

:14:27. > :14:32.there has already been another 66. One of the most high profile recent

:14:33. > :14:35.attacks was last month, when 21-year-old Resham Khan

:14:36. > :14:37.and her cousin, Jameel Muhktar, were targeted while sitting

:14:38. > :14:44.in their car at a traffic light. We are concerned because the numbers

:14:45. > :14:47.appear to be going up. We will arrest people,

:14:48. > :14:49.we will enforce the law as we can, and we are working

:14:50. > :14:52.with the Home Office to see Stephen Timms is one

:14:53. > :14:57.of the MPs in east London where the problem is most acute,

:14:58. > :15:00.he has been campaigning for a change in the law and will lead a debate

:15:01. > :15:05.on acid attacks next week. I would like the Minister to confirm

:15:06. > :15:10.on Monday that the possession of acid will be an offence in future

:15:11. > :15:13.in exactly the same way that possession of a knife

:15:14. > :15:19.is an offence today. I would like the law to be changed

:15:20. > :15:23.so that sulphuric acid will only be It seems that some criminals

:15:24. > :15:28.are using the laxer rules on acids to avoid the tough laws

:15:29. > :15:32.on carrying a knife. The Home Office has promised

:15:33. > :15:54.to take action but changes Using the new silk Road to export

:15:55. > :15:58.the best of Britain. How UK companies are hoping to take

:15:59. > :17:21.advantage of China's push for stronger trade links.

:17:22. > :17:30.France pauses to remember the horrific truck attack in Nice a year

:17:31. > :17:31.ago. President Macron posted Donald Trump at this year's Bastille Day

:17:32. > :17:36.celebrations. Over the past 20 years,

:17:37. > :17:39.China has moved from the margins of the world economy

:17:40. > :17:41.to a trading superpower. It's planning to finance and build

:17:42. > :17:45.a trillion dollar rail route This week, our China Editor,

:17:46. > :17:49.Carrie Gracie, has been following that 11,000 kilometre

:17:50. > :17:51.route from China to the UK. Today she reaches

:17:52. > :17:54.the end of her journey. With Brexit driving the UK's search

:17:55. > :17:57.for new markets abroad, is China's Now, here is the question,

:17:58. > :18:07.shall we have jam first Lessons in the British

:18:08. > :18:13.tradition of afternoon tea She plans to take her pitch

:18:14. > :18:23.from an Essex tea room to China. A communist state, perhaps,

:18:24. > :18:25.but one with a healthy appetite for the rituals

:18:26. > :18:32.of the British ruling class. Her jam is with berries

:18:33. > :18:36.straight from the farm. China's consumer is getting

:18:37. > :18:39.choosy about food quality. A huge market,

:18:40. > :18:44.but hard to stand out. I think mostly at the beginning

:18:45. > :18:46.of the journey, we are starting The Chinese are a curious country,

:18:47. > :18:59.ought to raise consumers, Another challenge, to cut the time

:19:00. > :19:03.from British strawberry farm She is hoping new transport

:19:04. > :19:10.routes will help. Once a symbol of British Empire

:19:11. > :19:14.and engineering, now it's China's Carrying UK hopes for

:19:15. > :19:21.post-Brexit markets. From the British end of

:19:22. > :19:26.the New Silk Road back to its start. Three weeks later, and those British

:19:27. > :19:30.kids from the train are on display It's a local stir-fry

:19:31. > :19:44.which captures the crowd. British companies can

:19:45. > :19:49.benefit from China. Peter Bud surveys landmarks his firm

:19:50. > :19:53.has helped put on the Beijing map. China's promised billions to build

:19:54. > :19:56.across 60 countries. And he worries UK companies are slow

:19:57. > :20:04.to seize the moment. There is the degree of cynicism

:20:05. > :20:07.about China as the market. A lot of them have had experiences

:20:08. > :20:10.way back in the past and they don't It is quite upsetting,

:20:11. > :20:16.actually, sometimes. There is more opportunity

:20:17. > :20:20.here than we are actually taking. The ancient Silk Road

:20:21. > :20:25.was about following opportunity. Back then, it was driven by private

:20:26. > :20:30.traders from many countries. The new version is Chinese

:20:31. > :20:33.state money and muscle. If it succeeds, it will make

:20:34. > :20:39.China a superpower again. Even mightier, perhaps,

:20:40. > :20:44.than the empires of old. But if it fails, it leaves

:20:45. > :20:48.a legacy of bad blood, which poisons China's future

:20:49. > :20:50.and taints even the Turkey has dismissed

:20:51. > :21:06.several thousand police, ministry staff and academics

:21:07. > :21:08.in a decree for allegedly working against state

:21:09. > :21:10.security or being a member The new purge wave comes a day

:21:11. > :21:15.before the anniversary of last Turkey has already sacked

:21:16. > :21:21.or suspended more than 150,000 Critics say some of the dismissed

:21:22. > :21:27.are people who are simply in opposition to the government

:21:28. > :21:44.and not related to the coup attempt. Roger Federer is one win away from a

:21:45. > :21:55.historic eight Wimbledon title. He took the first and second

:21:56. > :22:00.sets on tie breaks. And the Swiss then wrapped up

:22:01. > :22:03.victory with a comfortable Speak to the team and take

:22:04. > :22:17.on a decision that we would sit out and wait

:22:18. > :22:20.longer and take time, but I am so happy I did it

:22:21. > :22:23.because my life continues after It was the first time Marin Cilic

:22:24. > :22:28.and Sam Querrey had reached the last four on the grass,

:22:29. > :22:31.and it was Cilic who's gone one step The former US Open champion

:22:32. > :22:35.winning in four sets. Unbelievable, especially the way

:22:36. > :22:41.this tournament unfolded. I was playing really

:22:42. > :22:43.great tennis and today was a really

:22:44. > :22:45.hard fought battle. Sam played really high-level tennis,

:22:46. > :22:53.especially the first set. He was hitting really

:22:54. > :22:57.big from the back After that, I felt I was better

:22:58. > :23:03.on the return games, I was making him play more on his service

:23:04. > :23:06.games and overall I felt the level An Bastille Day, there was a French

:23:07. > :24:04.winner on the Tour de France. South Africa are desperate to make

:24:05. > :24:16.amends for that abject collapse on Lord's on Sunday.

:24:17. > :24:25.Let's have a look at that scorecard. South Africa ending the day 309-6.

:24:26. > :24:33.Dean and Ga, the first wicket to fall. He is the first Englishman to

:24:34. > :24:38.do that. A big partnership between Hashim Amla and Quinton de Kock over

:24:39. > :24:44.100 steadied things for South Africa. The croc eventually falling

:24:45. > :24:48.for 68 and Amla 78 before both captains coming back to the side

:24:49. > :24:53.after the birth of her side. They were both caught behind by Jonny

:24:54. > :25:00.Bairstow of the bowling of Ben Stokes. South Africa finishing the

:25:01. > :25:04.day on 309-6. It has been frustrating at times for England's

:25:05. > :25:08.bowlers. They will be keen to wrap things up as quickly as possible in

:25:09. > :25:14.the morning and then we will see just how good that South Africa

:25:15. > :25:15.first innings score really is. Roger Federer into his eighth Wimbledon

:25:16. > :25:19.final. We'll leave you with some

:25:20. > :25:21.pictures from Florida, where a sinkhole has swallowed

:25:22. > :25:29.a house in a modern development. The ground fell away

:25:30. > :25:34.in the town of Land o' Lakes - though it's not thought

:25:35. > :25:40.anyone was injured. Witnesses say the ground started

:25:41. > :25:42.giving way without warning. Sinkholes are a somewhat regular
