:00:54. > :01:10.Hello and welcome to World News Today.

:01:11. > :01:13.President Trump has insisted he has complete power to pardon people.

:01:14. > :01:18.It comes amid reports that he's been looking at ways

:01:19. > :01:25.of pardoning himself, and his family, should

:01:26. > :01:27.investigators conclude there was collusion with Russia

:01:28. > :01:32.Next week, his eldest son and his son-in-law are due

:01:33. > :01:35.But there was no mention of the controversy -

:01:36. > :01:39.when the President spoke at a naval ceremony in Virginia.

:01:40. > :01:46.From Washington, Laura Bicker reports.

:01:47. > :01:49.Donald Trump is gearing up for what could be one

:01:50. > :01:53.He's clearing the decks to try to fight off claims

:01:54. > :02:01.the Kremlin helped him win the White House.

:02:02. > :02:04.His core message has become engulfed by the many investigations -

:02:05. > :02:07.as he launched a new aircraft carrier in Virginia,

:02:08. > :02:12.he gave the kind of sales pitch he'd prefer Americans to hear.

:02:13. > :02:15.American steel and American hands have constructed a 100,000 tonne

:02:16. > :02:30.Donald Trump is reshaping and upgrading his team just

:02:31. > :02:32.as the scope of the investigation into Russian meddling

:02:33. > :02:35.in the US election widens to include his finances.

:02:36. > :02:38.And that has infuriated the president.

:02:39. > :02:40.The focus of the enquiry is also no longer outside

:02:41. > :02:43.the White House gates, it's focusing on his inner circle,

:02:44. > :02:45.his own family, who will give evidence to Congress

:02:46. > :02:50.Mr Trump's son-in-law, Jared Kushner, is one

:02:51. > :02:54.Seen so often at his side, but rarely heard.

:02:55. > :02:59.He has done some talking, though, to Russians during the campaign.

:03:00. > :03:02.He'll be asked about that in Congress on Monday.

:03:03. > :03:04.Donald Trump Jr is also in discussions about testifying

:03:05. > :03:07.after it was revealed he met with a Russian lawyer,

:03:08. > :03:09.who'd offered incriminating information about Hillary Clinton

:03:10. > :03:18.White House spokesman Sean Spicer often struggled to convey

:03:19. > :03:20.the President's message, amidst a barrage of

:03:21. > :03:25.If the president puts Russian salad dressing on his salad tonight,

:03:26. > :03:31.He's now saying farewell, making way for a new face,

:03:32. > :03:35.the slick Wall Street financier Anthony Scaramucci.

:03:36. > :03:38.I just think it was in the best interest of our communications

:03:39. > :03:41.department, or of our press organisation, to not have too many

:03:42. > :03:49.He's described the enquiries into his campaign's links

:03:50. > :03:55.He's getting combat ready, just in case investigators

:03:56. > :04:06.And we'll be speaking to Laura live from Washington a little

:04:07. > :04:13.The London hospital treating the terminally ill baby -

:04:14. > :04:15.Charlie Gard says its staff are being subjected to intimidation

:04:16. > :04:22.All this as a court case continues over whether to withdraw life

:04:23. > :04:27.The hospital's chairman - Mary MacLeod said that Charlie's

:04:28. > :04:33.And she understands emotions are running high.

:04:34. > :04:37.But she said that there is no excuse for such behaviour.

:04:38. > :04:41.In a statement she said "In recent weeks -

:04:42. > :04:45.the Great Ormand Street Hospital community has been subjected

:04:46. > :04:48.to a shocking and disgraceful tide of hostility and disturbance."

:04:49. > :04:52."Staff have received abuse both in the street and online.

:04:53. > :04:56.Thousands of abusive messages have been sent to doctors."

:04:57. > :04:59.She went on to say "Many of these messages are menacing,

:05:00. > :05:15.We in close contact with the Metropolitan Police".

:05:16. > :05:18.Laura Trant has been following the case.

:05:19. > :05:21.We know that Charlie Gard is 11 months old, he is terminally ill,

:05:22. > :05:24.he has a rare genetic condition and has brain damage.

:05:25. > :05:26.He is currently subject of an intense legal battle

:05:27. > :05:28.between his parents and the medics over how exactly

:05:29. > :05:32.The hospital does say of course, they know this is heartbreaking.

:05:33. > :05:34.But they recognise the sympathy that people do feel for him

:05:35. > :05:38.In recent weeks, the level of abuse directed at the doctors and nurses

:05:39. > :05:41.at the hospital is just not something they can

:05:42. > :05:46.They referred to it being disgraceful,

:05:47. > :05:49.and the fact it has had an impact on other parents are

:05:50. > :05:53.seriously unwell children who are being treated

:05:54. > :05:56.They say they recognise emotions are running high that there can be

:05:57. > :06:03.no excuse for patients and families to have their privacy and their

:06:04. > :06:05.and their peace disturbed in this way.

:06:06. > :06:07.They also referred to the fact that they are in contact

:06:08. > :06:09.with the Metropolitan Police and will hold anybody

:06:10. > :06:13.to account who behaves in what they term a deplorable way.

:06:14. > :06:17.This does echo interestingly the words of Mr Justice Francis,

:06:18. > :06:20.who yesterday at the High Court at the procedural hearing urged any

:06:21. > :06:23.campaigners and protesters who were outside the hospital

:06:24. > :06:29.to respect the needs and wishes of those children

:06:30. > :06:33.who are being treated and their parents.

:06:34. > :06:35.The parents of Charlie Gard, Connie Yates and Chris Gard,

:06:36. > :06:37.have responded in a statement made via a spokesman.

:06:38. > :06:40.They say "We don't condone abusive or threatening behaviour

:06:41. > :06:42.to GOSH staff or anybody in connection with our son"

:06:43. > :06:45."We too get abuse and have to endure nasty and hurtful

:06:46. > :06:53."People have different opinions and we accept that

:06:54. > :06:59.but there is a line that shouldn't be crossed."

:07:00. > :07:03.Let's take a look at some of the other stories making the news...

:07:04. > :07:05.Israel has indicated that it is willing to consider

:07:06. > :07:09.alternatives to the highly controversial metal detectors

:07:10. > :07:13.that it has installed at the holy site in Jerusalem.

:07:14. > :07:16.It follows several days of protests in which three Israelis and four

:07:17. > :07:21.The metal detectors were put in place after two Israeli policemen

:07:22. > :07:25.were killed on the site, known to Muslims as Haram al-Sharif

:07:26. > :07:34.Congress in the Philippines has voted to extend martial law

:07:35. > :07:37.on the southern island of Mindanao, where the military is battling

:07:38. > :07:40.Politicians overwhelmingly backed the president's request to extend

:07:41. > :07:44.army rule until the end of this year.

:07:45. > :07:46.The Armed Forces have been battling Islamist fighters

:07:47. > :07:52.in the southern city of Marawi for the past seven weeks.

:07:53. > :07:55.A German prosecutor has confirmed a 16-year-old German girl,

:07:56. > :08:00.suspected of joining Islamic State in Iraq, was arrested last week.

:08:01. > :08:04.The teenager, simply known as Linda W, was arrested in Mosul.

:08:05. > :08:07.The German magazine Der Spiegel is reporting that she was captured

:08:08. > :08:09.along with three other suspected Isis brides in a tunnel,

:08:10. > :08:19.where weapons and explosive belts were discovered.

:08:20. > :08:23.Let's move to Poland - where the conservative government

:08:24. > :08:25.has dismissed criticism that a law reforming

:08:26. > :08:29.the Supreme Court would undermine the independence of the judiciary.

:08:30. > :08:33.Protests are taking place now in the capital, Warsaw.

:08:34. > :08:36.The new law, gives the Polish government the right to replace

:08:37. > :08:40.Supreme Court judges, now needs presidential approval.

:08:41. > :08:43.Well, Hungary's Prime Minister Viktor Orban has also weighed in.

:08:44. > :08:47.He says he will use all legal options - to support Poland -

:08:48. > :08:49.if the European Union attempted to penalise them.

:08:50. > :09:04.TRANSLATION: Concerning the Polish judicial reform, here we face case

:09:05. > :09:08.of double standards. The Polish did not do anything. They did not change

:09:09. > :09:12.anything on their justice system that does not fit the mutually

:09:13. > :09:19.accepted and shared the spoils and ideas of the European Union. This is

:09:20. > :09:23.unfair. And just on principle. This is what the principles are doing

:09:24. > :09:26.today. That's why an honourable person not only because real

:09:27. > :09:30.Hungarians, but because we are honourable people, cannot accept

:09:31. > :09:34.something like this. In these kinds of cases, one should always stand by

:09:35. > :09:36.the side of the attacked. So I send my word to Mr Scholz, we stand with

:09:37. > :09:38.Poland in solidarity. Let's get more we can speak

:09:39. > :09:40.to Kataryna Volczuk - she is the deputy director

:09:41. > :09:53.for Russia and East European studies Thank you for being with us. How

:09:54. > :10:02.significant is it that Victor Aubin is siding with the Polish government

:10:03. > :10:08.on this? It is not surprising at all, but Hungary has been rather

:10:09. > :10:11.smug about not going against the EU very openly, despite the problem

:10:12. > :10:17.with the rule of law and the problem with democracy in Hungary. Now

:10:18. > :10:22.because of Poland, he is adopting an anti-rhetoric position. How

:10:23. > :10:29.significant is it that this law has passed the Senate, is Poland now on

:10:30. > :10:34.a collision course with the EU? It's difficult to see how the EU would

:10:35. > :10:39.not respond. If it was just one bill, one law, that would be

:10:40. > :10:42.understandable. Perhaps things were not considered properly. But what we

:10:43. > :10:46.see rushing through Parliament and the houses is a packet of bills

:10:47. > :10:53.which basically subordinates the court system from the very top of

:10:54. > :10:56.the Supreme Court, to the ruling party, at Parliament and the

:10:57. > :11:05.Minister of Justice. From that point of view, Poland has been playing

:11:06. > :11:10.with a various aspects of democracy, in end the EU has been trying to

:11:11. > :11:15.intervene. But what has happened in the last week and especially in the

:11:16. > :11:19.last couple of days, concerns have been raised about the way Poland is

:11:20. > :11:25.going, to the extent it is actually difficult for the EU not to act one

:11:26. > :11:30.way or another. European Commission 's vice president has threatened to

:11:31. > :11:35.withdraw Poland 's voting rights, is that possible without Hungary's

:11:36. > :11:41.support? It would be very difficult. That support was actually requiring

:11:42. > :11:45.anonymity in the European Council and Hungary has, within hours of the

:11:46. > :11:49.vote, already this morning pledged support to Poland. Having said that,

:11:50. > :11:56.this is Article seven of the treaty of the European Union, with that

:11:57. > :11:59.article the EU is in charge of democracy. It has not been used

:12:00. > :12:06.actually, is the procedures are to be developed. The EU is the

:12:07. > :12:09.community of space united by law. But there are created ways in which

:12:10. > :12:11.the EU could actually develop their way to discipline Poland one way or

:12:12. > :12:29.another. Thank you. Stay with us, still to come we will

:12:30. > :12:31.have all the sport and Chris Froome is all but certain to win the Tour

:12:32. > :13:52.de France. This is BBC World News today. The

:13:53. > :13:58.latest headlines: President Trump has asserted his

:13:59. > :14:00.absolute power of pardon, amid reports that he has been

:14:01. > :14:03.looking at ways of pardoning himself and his family,

:14:04. > :14:06.should the findings of a special London's Great Ormond Street

:14:16. > :14:18.abuse in relation to This year, more than 80 thousand

:14:19. > :14:24.migrants have landed in Italy - a 16% rise over the same

:14:25. > :14:26.period last year. Over the last four years,

:14:27. > :14:28.the country has received 600,000 migrants, a figure

:14:29. > :14:33.which is causing rising anger. The government is aiming

:14:34. > :14:35.to disperse migrants across the country -

:14:36. > :14:37.but some smaller Our correspondent James Reynolds

:14:38. > :14:58.reports from Sicily. the town council has cold an

:14:59. > :15:07.emergency public meeting. The states has ordered this town to take in

:15:08. > :15:09.around 20 migrants. I want guarantees, says this retired

:15:10. > :15:17.teacher, they need medical and criminal checks. They were already

:15:18. > :15:24.checked when they landed, argues another. I don't think they will

:15:25. > :15:27.damage our country. The next morning, the regions Mayers get

:15:28. > :15:31.together to oppose the plans to take in so many migrants. They have come

:15:32. > :15:37.to the regional capital of the Cena to persuade the government to

:15:38. > :15:42.reconsider. Wearing a tie may help. The Italian government is struggling

:15:43. > :15:46.to find a solution that works. It wants to scatter migrants as soon as

:15:47. > :15:50.they land here in big ports, but that just shuffles the problem from

:15:51. > :15:57.built-up areas to the depths of the countryside. The semiderelict

:15:58. > :16:02.Kangaroo hotel in the small town here is now home to 50 migrants. Six

:16:03. > :16:10.times the number the government recommends for a town this size.

:16:11. > :16:13.TRANSLATION: It's not good, it's not good because these here have not

:16:14. > :16:17.been checked by a doctor. We do not know who they are, it's no good. The

:16:22. > :16:28.that half the new arrivals will go back to Messina. TRANSLATION: I

:16:29. > :16:36.certainly don't want to become their hero. They need someone else to

:16:37. > :16:40.defend them. Our town is too small. At nights, amid cheers from

:16:41. > :16:47.volunteers, migrants are escorted out. They barely know where they are

:16:48. > :16:55.going. I was told I'm going to Messina. Do you know where that is?

:16:56. > :16:58.No sir. Italy's relocation plan, improvised and haphazard, has to

:16:59. > :17:01.start again. James Reynolds, BBC News, Sicily.

:17:02. > :17:03.Returning to our main story, that President Trump has

:17:04. > :17:05.asserted his complete power to pardon people.

:17:06. > :17:13.Laura Bicker joins me from Washington.

:17:14. > :17:20.What has been the reaction to this statement that Donald Trump has made

:17:21. > :17:26.that he can pardon people? Many legal experts have come forward this

:17:27. > :17:30.afternoon, saying no, it's not constitutionally legal for him to

:17:31. > :17:35.pardon himself. It would not work. However, when it comes to Donald

:17:36. > :17:39.Trump, I think this is one tweet that we have to take into a little

:17:40. > :17:44.bit of context. Early in the week, there was a story in the Washington

:17:45. > :17:49.Post and the New York Times which suggested he had been asking about

:17:50. > :17:53.whether or not he does have the power to pardon. When it came to

:17:54. > :17:58.that question, he was asking around, that was just according to White

:17:59. > :18:02.House aides talking to the New York Times and Washington Post. This

:18:03. > :18:05.morning he tweets on the back of all about, saying when it comes to the

:18:06. > :18:09.power of pardoning, everyone agrees I do have it. This is a bit of the

:18:10. > :18:13.showman coming out, playing to his best. And it was part of a massive

:18:14. > :18:18.Twitter storm. With subjects ranging from Obama cared to his former rival

:18:19. > :18:22.Hillary Clinton. It needs to be taken into some context. I'm not

:18:23. > :18:27.quite sure whether or not the president was entirely being serious

:18:28. > :18:33.when he said, he would pardon himself. Laura, this is all in the

:18:34. > :18:39.run-up to another extraordinary week in Washington where we are expecting

:18:40. > :18:45.Donald Trump's sun and son-in-law to be questioned by Congress. Give us

:18:46. > :18:49.an idea of what is going to happen. When it comes to the enquiry into

:18:50. > :18:52.whether or not Russia modelled in the US presidential election, this

:18:53. > :18:57.week could be crucial. Jared Kushner, the President's son-in-law

:18:58. > :19:02.has an very active with the president, very active behind the

:19:03. > :19:05.scenes, he has been seen a lot, but not really heard. We will not get to

:19:06. > :19:10.hear his testimony in public, but he will be talking to members of

:19:11. > :19:13.Congress about his contacts with Russia, which came to light. When it

:19:14. > :19:18.comes to his son, Donald Trump Junior, the questions will be about

:19:19. > :19:22.his meeting with a Russian lawyer, to get dirt on Hillary Clinton.

:19:23. > :19:24.Those revelations. There may be a lot to come this week.

:19:25. > :19:31.A small digital company in London, is developing a system which uses

:19:32. > :19:32.cameras to accurately recognise human faces.

:19:33. > :19:35.The idea is that it'll help keep tabs on terror suspects.

:19:36. > :19:36.The technology is already being trialled.

:19:37. > :19:55.The leader of the London Bridge rampage last month, on the radar as

:19:56. > :20:02.a known extremist, but not someone considered to be a priority. MI5 say

:20:03. > :20:07.there are 23,000 people on Britain's terror watch list, but now a

:20:08. > :20:10.company, Digital Barriers in Suffolk has developed a system which uses

:20:11. > :20:19.artificial intelligence techniques to identify suspects using fixed

:20:20. > :20:25.surveillance cameras. We here is to say that record what we see here is

:20:26. > :20:28.someone on our list, picked up by our surveillance cameras. What we

:20:29. > :20:31.see now is the identity of a person coming through a doorway, and that

:20:32. > :20:36.alert will go to the right place. This could be one of many thousands

:20:37. > :20:42.of such cameras in use every day of the week looking for people against

:20:43. > :20:44.that database. The conditions down there are extremely difficult, but

:20:45. > :20:49.they are proceeding as quickly as they can... Antony Trotter was the

:20:50. > :20:53.deputy of the police transport police at the time of the London

:20:54. > :20:58.bombings in 2005. He has no doubt that using the latest technology and

:20:59. > :21:01.intelligence gathering is essential. The dreadful events of the last few

:21:02. > :21:06.weeks should stick in our minds forever. They should not fade away.

:21:07. > :21:10.We have to be vigilant all the time, and must not let our guard down. We

:21:11. > :21:14.must use the latest technology to take that fight to the terrorists.

:21:15. > :21:19.But the balance between intruding in our lives and security is one which

:21:20. > :21:23.is being seriously questioned. We need to interrogate whether we are

:21:24. > :21:26.willing for something that can be very invasive, that can have a real

:21:27. > :21:31.impact on innocent people's freedoms every day, whether we are willing to

:21:32. > :21:34.have that installed in our society. Even the developers except that

:21:35. > :21:38.advanced facial recognition will never replace conventional

:21:39. > :21:39.intelligence gathering. But its use, if the public accepts it, opens up a

:21:40. > :21:48.whole new area in surveillance. Let's start with the Open

:21:49. > :21:59.Championship and the American Jordan Spieth will go into Sunday's final

:22:00. > :22:03.day with a three shot lead. Spieth carded a second bogey free

:22:04. > :22:06.round of 65 at Royal Birkdale, he's That's three shots ahead

:22:07. > :22:12.of his fellow American Matt Kuchar. But the round of the day came

:22:13. > :22:16.from South Africa's Branden Grace - he carded a 62, the lowest ever

:22:17. > :22:18.round in a men's major. Grace took advantage of the ideal

:22:19. > :22:21.conditions on Day three to move But his achievement

:22:22. > :22:31.took him by surprise.. I had no idea. Both of them said

:22:32. > :22:35.congratulations, I knew it was a great round but I didn't know it was

:22:36. > :22:38.the history books. Then they said, you're in the history books now, I

:22:39. > :22:42.said what you talking about? They said lowest round ever. That was

:22:43. > :22:47.great, makes it even more special. Makes it even better doing it at the

:22:48. > :22:49.British Open, at the Open. This is my eighth one, it's definitely one I

:22:50. > :22:54.am liking far. So let's take a quick look

:22:55. > :22:56.at the leaderboard now and as we mentioned,

:22:57. > :22:58.Jordan Spieth leads the way. Also in with a shout

:22:59. > :23:00.is the young Canadian, Austin Connelly, he's on five under,

:23:01. > :23:03.six shots behind Spieth. Defending champion Henrik Stenson

:23:04. > :23:05.is eight shots off the pace while Rory McIlroy is nine shots

:23:06. > :23:10.behind on two under par. Britain's Chris Froome is all

:23:11. > :23:12.but certain of securing his third straight Tour de France title -

:23:13. > :23:15.and fourth in all - when the race concludes

:23:16. > :23:17.in Paris on Sunday. Remarkably, he'll take the yellow

:23:18. > :23:19.jersey without having won a stage. He had to settle for third

:23:20. > :23:22.place in Saturday's time trial in Marseille -

:23:23. > :23:24.a stage which was won But crucially Froome

:23:25. > :23:30.extended his race lead to 54 seconds over Rigoberto Uran,

:23:31. > :23:32.with Romain Bardet now third. Sunday's final stage is,

:23:33. > :23:33.by tradition a procession, with Froome being crowned champion

:23:34. > :23:45.on the Champs-Elysees. Coming into the stadium with Romain

:23:46. > :23:48.just ahead of me, knowing if I had navigated the last two corners

:23:49. > :23:51.correctly, that would be it for this There have been ups

:23:52. > :23:57.and downs over the past three weeks but

:23:58. > :24:00.I think it has been very much a grand tour,

:24:01. > :24:01.in the sense it has been really

:24:02. > :24:06.about the three weeks, and doing this three weeks,

:24:07. > :24:08.in the most conservative but On to football, where France

:24:09. > :24:28.are taking on Austria at the Women's European Championship

:24:29. > :24:31.in the Netherlands. We're into the second

:24:32. > :24:33.round of group games. An impressive low drive from

:24:34. > :24:35.Lisa Makas gave Austria the lead. But France equalised through

:24:36. > :24:40.Armandine Henry after the break. So 1-1 the latest score,

:24:41. > :24:45.with 15 minutes left to play. Earlier, Switzerland

:24:46. > :24:50.beat Iceland 2-1. Monaco say they've agreed a fee

:24:51. > :24:52.with Manchester City for Benjamin Mendy -

:24:53. > :24:54.which would take their spending on two full-backs this summer

:24:55. > :24:58.to more than 120 million dollars. The left-back will cost City

:24:59. > :25:01.around half that amount. And he'd be their second

:25:02. > :25:03.signing from Monaco, following Bernardo Silva

:25:04. > :25:05.from the club that knocked them out Well the new English Premier League

:25:06. > :25:13.season starts in less And champions Chelsea

:25:14. > :25:18.have put down a marker. Michy Batshuyai scored twice

:25:19. > :25:20.in their 3-0 win over London rivals, Arsenal, in a preseason friendly

:25:21. > :25:45.at the Bird's Nest Thank you very much. Don't forget

:25:46. > :25:50.there is plenty more on our website, and you can get in touch with me on

:25:51. > :26:11.twitter. That's it from me and the team. Goodbye for now.

:26:12. > :26:16.After a day of hefty downpours, most of them will gradually fade

:26:17. > :26:17.overnight, but there will still be either a few
