0:00:11 > 0:00:14Saudi Arabia is reported to have shot down a ballistic missile over
0:00:14 > 0:00:16the capital Riyadh - a loud explosion was heard
0:00:16 > 0:00:19near the city's airport.
0:00:19 > 0:00:21Lebanon's Prime Minister resigns saying his life is in danger.
0:00:21 > 0:00:26He blames Iran.
0:00:26 > 0:00:28President Trump departs Hawaii is on his way to Japan -

0:00:52 > 0:00:56Hello and welcome to World News Today.
0:00:56 > 0:00:58Reports from Saudi Arabia say the military has shot down
0:00:58 > 0:01:04a missile over the capital, Riyadh, close to the international airport.
0:01:04 > 0:01:06The authorities say the missile was fired from neighbouring Yemen,
0:01:06 > 0:01:08where Houthi rebels are fighting the Saudi-backed government.
0:01:08 > 0:01:13There are no reports of any damage.
0:01:13 > 0:01:16A television station supported by the Houthis said
0:01:16 > 0:01:19the missile had hit its target, the airport, but there's been no
0:01:19 > 0:01:20evidence to support that claim.
0:01:20 > 0:01:22The Houthis have fired a number of missiles
0:01:22 > 0:01:25across the two countries' border, but none have gone so close
0:01:25 > 0:01:28to a major population centre.
0:01:28 > 0:01:33With me is Mohamed Taha from BBC Arabic.
0:01:33 > 0:01:39The fact that it came so close to hitting the international airport,
0:01:39 > 0:01:46or maybe it has if the Houthis' claim is correct is why Riyadh have
0:01:46 > 0:01:52reacted. They have reacted quickly? It couldn't be denied, because as
0:01:52 > 0:01:58you said, whether the missile or parts of it hit the airport or a
0:01:58 > 0:02:02building, in the airport, whether it is, it has been intercepted or not,
0:02:02 > 0:02:09but you know. At the end of the day, there is fire and explosion in part
0:02:09 > 0:02:19of the airport. So flights are normally, are happening normally and
0:02:19 > 0:02:25movement happening normally. But as you said, the fact that this missile
0:02:25 > 0:02:31managed to get to Riyadh is significant.Sadly, the war in Yemen
0:02:31 > 0:02:37is often described as the forgotten war. It goes through months without
0:02:37 > 0:02:40making the international news. Very little humanitarian aid. It is
0:02:40 > 0:02:44difficult for journalists to find out what is going on. Do you think
0:02:44 > 0:02:49perhaps they have chose the international airport to get it back
0:02:49 > 0:02:58on the international agenda, how busy is the airport?Yes the
0:02:58 > 0:03:01international airport is the main airport in the whole of Saudi
0:03:01 > 0:03:06Arabia, there are other busy airports, but this is the main
0:03:06 > 0:03:13airport with the capital and it has two terminals, north and south.
0:03:13 > 0:03:17Saudi Arabia, Riyadh's capital is a big capital, is a business hub.
0:03:17 > 0:03:23There are many international businesses are going to Saudi Arabia
0:03:23 > 0:03:32and companies are in Saudi Arabia at the moment. The vision of crown
0:03:32 > 0:03:41prince is to evolve Saudi Arabia by 2030 to be a financial hub, so what
0:03:41 > 0:03:45happened tonight I think will have lots of thinking from the crown
0:03:45 > 0:03:53prince.In many ways it was also internationals, businessman and
0:03:53 > 0:03:57women and even people visiting the country, being targeted as well?
0:03:57 > 0:04:03Yes, that is correct. And this is the significance as well, that the
0:04:03 > 0:04:10Saudi cab Tall, Ree -- capital, Riyadh, has not under attack from
0:04:10 > 0:04:16the beginning of the Saudi Arabia country more than 60 years ago.Is
0:04:16 > 0:04:23it quite random when the Houthis fire missiles, how much danger is
0:04:23 > 0:04:29there of of the war spilling into Audi Arabia? They have threatened
0:04:29 > 0:04:38before to hit into the heart of Saudi Arabia. Saudi Arabia replied
0:04:38 > 0:04:44straightaway by air attacks on the area. But what happened tonight I'm
0:04:44 > 0:04:48sure will have significant effect on the range of the war in the Middle
0:04:48 > 0:04:56East.Thank you.
0:04:56 > 0:04:58Iran has rejected accusations by the Lebanese Prime Minister that
0:04:58 > 0:05:00it's spreading violence across the region.
0:05:00 > 0:05:02Saad Hariri resigned from his post unexpectedly -
0:05:02 > 0:05:06saying he feared for his life.
0:05:06 > 0:05:08Iranian officials say his resignation is a Saudi plot
0:05:08 > 0:05:10to create tension in Lebanon and the region.
0:05:10 > 0:05:20BBC Arabic's Carine Torbey has the latest from Beirut.
0:05:23 > 0:05:31It is a resignation that has stunned Lebanon. Saad al-Hariri said he
0:05:31 > 0:05:36holds Hezbollah and Iran responsible.TRANSLATION: I want to
0:05:36 > 0:05:40say to Iran and its followers that they're losing in their interference
0:05:40 > 0:05:44in the affairs of the Arab world. Our nation will rise up as it has in
0:05:44 > 0:05:48the past and cut off the hands that wickedly extend into it in the same
0:05:48 > 0:05:59way it was forced back on to you in Bahrain and Yemen. On the streets of
0:05:59 > 0:06:04Beirut it didn't escape people's notice that the Prime Minister was
0:06:04 > 0:06:07speaking from Saudi Arabia. The Saudis have backed Saad al-Hariri
0:06:07 > 0:06:15and they will be seen as pulling the strings. President Trump has put all
0:06:15 > 0:06:20his cards on Saudi Arabia in its confrontation with Iran. That
0:06:20 > 0:06:25peopled the pressure on Saad al-Hariri, whose decision to go into
0:06:25 > 0:06:29government with Hezbollah last year will not have pleased the Saudis.
0:06:29 > 0:06:38Since he took on his father's political mantle after his
0:06:38 > 0:06:44assassination in 2005, Saad al-Hariri have never stepped out of
0:06:44 > 0:06:54the shadow of his father and establish his own identity. His
0:06:54 > 0:06:58reference to a threat to kill him has raised the political temperature
0:06:58 > 0:07:03in Lebanon. Many there will be concerned that his decision will
0:07:03 > 0:07:07plunge the country into new uncertainty as the Middle East
0:07:07 > 0:07:17recalibrates in the wake of the Islamic State group's defeat,
0:07:17 > 0:07:22putting Lebanon in the cross fire of the tension between Iran and Saudi
0:07:22 > 0:07:32Arabia. Let's direct to the director of the Middle East centre, who joins
0:07:32 > 0:07:39us from Italy. Very unusual for the Lebanese leader to announce his
0:07:39 > 0:07:47resignation in Riyadh?Absolutely. Hello and it is good to be with you.
0:07:47 > 0:07:54Yes, it is very unusual for him to announce his resignation from
0:07:54 > 0:08:01Riyadh. There are multiple messages here, one is reinforces his claim
0:08:01 > 0:08:06that there was a threat to his life that was thwarted a few days ago.
0:08:06 > 0:08:11That it is also a message to say Riyadh is back on the scene in
0:08:11 > 0:08:20Lebanon. One wonders if this is also a reaction to the apparent, I don't
0:08:20 > 0:08:32want to say win, but the apparent... The fact that Iran and... PROBLEMS
0:08:32 > 0:08:42WITH SOUND.
0:08:44 > 0:08:48So this could signal something actually we are back with a heavy
0:08:48 > 0:08:55hand.It is a little bit of a dodgy line, we are going to try and stick
0:08:55 > 0:09:03with it. This comes just a few hours before a missile, we presume from
0:09:03 > 0:09:08Houthi rebels, lands in Riyadh. This whole region has a complicated
0:09:08 > 0:09:12history, so without going into that, can you try and explain something of
0:09:12 > 0:09:16the significance of what we are seeing, the tensions that seem to be
0:09:16 > 0:09:21developing in the region. Are we in danger of an all out Middle East war
0:09:21 > 0:09:29to be frank? Not immediately, but definitely the tensions are boiling
0:09:29 > 0:09:35above, I mean, they're at an all-time high. We haven't seen
0:09:35 > 0:09:38things this unstable and this precarious in a very long time. I
0:09:38 > 0:09:42can't remember the last time when things were this precarious.
0:09:42 > 0:09:52Particularly when you put this in the context of Saudi/ist Iranian
0:09:52 > 0:10:00tension. The missile was claimed by the Houthis. It is obviously coming
0:10:00 > 0:10:06in direct, in the context of Saad al-Hariri resignation and his
0:10:06 > 0:10:11announcement that Saudi Arabia and other gulf countries will deal with
0:10:11 > 0:10:17Hezbollah in the same way that they dealt with, the same way they went
0:10:17 > 0:10:22into Yemen and into Bahrain. In other words, he is hinting at a
0:10:22 > 0:10:30military intervention or some sort of a military strike. My sense is
0:10:30 > 0:10:34that the Qatar scenario might be more likely and we may see sanctions
0:10:34 > 0:10:37in place against the country or against specific Hezbollah members.
0:10:37 > 0:10:47It is not clear yet. But I think over the next 24 hours hour we will
0:10:47 > 0:10:53have a better picture. But these are dangerous times and for Lebanon it
0:10:53 > 0:10:57is plunging us into again the unknown.Thank you very much for
0:10:57 > 0:11:02speaking to the BBC. Apologies for the bad sound quality there. But I
0:11:02 > 0:11:07think you get a accepts. Things are -- sense things are not good in the
0:11:07 > 0:11:12region and the BBC will keep you up-to-date.
0:11:12 > 0:11:15President Trump has left Hawaii to begin his marathon tour of Asia -
0:11:15 > 0:11:18the longest by a US president in 25 years.
0:11:18 > 0:11:20This was Donald Trump boarding Air Force One with First
0:11:20 > 0:11:21Lady, Melania, earlier.
0:11:21 > 0:11:25They will arrive in Tokyo on Sunday, then it's on to South Korea,
0:11:25 > 0:11:26followed by China, Vietnam and the Philippines.
0:11:26 > 0:11:33Steven McDonnell reports, from Tokyo.
0:11:33 > 0:11:38Here in Tokyo, people are expecting Donald Trump's visit to be
0:11:38 > 0:11:40completely dominated by security issues emanating from
0:11:40 > 0:11:47the North Korean nuclear threat.
0:11:47 > 0:11:52Now, in theory, the United States and Japan do have a lot to talk
0:11:52 > 0:11:55about - trade for example - but everyone knows all of these
0:11:55 > 0:12:00other issues are going to be completely swamped by North Korea.
0:12:00 > 0:12:02On his way to Asia, Donald Trump also travelled
0:12:02 > 0:12:05to Pearl Harbor in Hawaii, where other side of the sunken ship
0:12:05 > 0:12:13USS Arizona they had a wreath laying ceremony.
0:12:13 > 0:12:16But perhaps more crucially in Hawaii, he also had a briefing
0:12:16 > 0:12:18from the generals at the US Pacific Command, speaking
0:12:18 > 0:12:20about regional security.
0:12:20 > 0:12:22No prizes for guessing what they would have
0:12:22 > 0:12:27been talking about - again, North Korea.
0:12:27 > 0:12:29When Donald Trump arrives in Japan he'll be meeting
0:12:29 > 0:12:33US troops based here.
0:12:33 > 0:12:35The same in South Korea.
0:12:35 > 0:12:38Perhaps this is a way of sending a message in terms of American
0:12:38 > 0:12:41capabilities in this part of the world.
0:12:41 > 0:12:47He'll also be trying to build a coalition of Asian governments
0:12:47 > 0:12:50in an attempt to pile even more pressure on the North Korea
0:12:50 > 0:12:52to get them to give up their nuclear weapons.
0:12:52 > 0:12:56That includes Beijing.
0:12:56 > 0:12:58Now, some analysts have said that China hasn't done
0:12:58 > 0:13:03enough in this regard, but Donald Trump says of his Chinese
0:13:03 > 0:13:05counterpart Xi Jinping that his effort so far has been
0:13:05 > 0:13:11"Pretty terrific."
0:13:11 > 0:13:20Stay with us. Still to come: Netflix cuts ties with the star of one of
0:13:20 > 0:13:25its biggest shows. We will hear more about Kevin Spacey's fall from
0:13:25 > 0:13:27grace.
0:13:45 > 0:13:50At polling booths they voted on an historic day for Australia. As the
0:13:50 > 0:13:57results came in, it was clear the monarchy could survive.Of the
0:13:57 > 0:14:01American hostages there was no sign. They're being held in the compound
0:14:01 > 0:14:06and student leaders have threatened should the Americans attempt rescue,
0:14:06 > 0:14:14they will all die.The mission has surpassed all expectations. Voyager
0:14:14 > 0:14:23one is the most distant man made object in the universe. This comes
0:14:23 > 0:14:26from the enduring power of our ideals.
0:14:42 > 0:14:44This is BBC World News Today.
0:14:44 > 0:14:45The latest headlines:
0:14:45 > 0:14:48State media in Saudi Arabia say a missile fired from Yemen has been
0:14:48 > 0:14:50shot down close to the international airport in the capital Riyadh.
0:14:51 > 0:14:52There are no reports of any damage.
0:14:52 > 0:14:54Lebanon's Prime Minister has resigned, saying
0:14:54 > 0:14:55he fears for his life.
0:14:55 > 0:15:03He's accused Iran of sowing "fear and destruction".
0:15:03 > 0:15:05Netflix has cut all ties with Kevin Spacey -
0:15:05 > 0:15:08who plays the lead role in one of its most successful
0:15:08 > 0:15:09programmes, 'House of Cards'.
0:15:09 > 0:15:12The company said it would no longer be involved in the series
0:15:12 > 0:15:15if the actor continued to be part of it.
0:15:15 > 0:15:18It comes as police in New York say they have a viable
0:15:18 > 0:15:19case against the Hollywood producer, Harvey Weinstein,
0:15:19 > 0:15:21who is also accused of sexual misconduct.
0:15:21 > 0:15:31Ben Ando reports.
0:15:34 > 0:15:40The TV company Netflix said it will no longer work with the actor Kevin
0:15:40 > 0:15:44Spacey as allegations against him mount up. A number of men have said
0:15:44 > 0:15:49the actor assaulted him. One said he was attacked while Mr Spacey was
0:15:49 > 0:15:54working at the Old Vic theatre. A claim being investigated by the
0:15:54 > 0:16:04police. A film about the writer Gore Vidal made by Mr Spacey will not be
0:16:04 > 0:16:08released. And police say they may arrest Harvey Weinstein on suspicion
0:16:08 > 0:16:13of rape. This may be the most serious of the accusations so far.
0:16:13 > 0:16:17The police say the woman they have spoken to has given a credible
0:16:17 > 0:16:23account of how the woman attacked her twice in 2010.We have an actual
0:16:23 > 0:16:28case here. We are happy with with the investigation is. Mr Weinstein
0:16:28 > 0:16:33is out of state. We would need an arrest warrant to arrest him. Now,
0:16:33 > 0:16:39we are gathering our evidence and we continue to do so every day.Harvey
0:16:39 > 0:16:45Weinstein's accusers include household names. He has issued a
0:16:45 > 0:16:50statement denying any suggestion of nonconsensual sex, but each day sees
0:16:50 > 0:16:54now investigation and police investigations on both sides of the
0:16:54 > 0:17:00Atlantic into the allegedly corrupt behaviour of some of show business's
0:17:00 > 0:17:05most powerful men.
0:17:05 > 0:17:08For more on the situation I was joined a short time ago by BBC
0:17:08 > 0:17:09Arabic Hollywood reporter, Sam Asi.
0:17:09 > 0:17:12He's met and interviewed Kevin Spacey numerous times and says
0:17:12 > 0:17:18the star's fall from grace has been swift and brutal.
0:17:18 > 0:17:20This show put Netflix's original programming on the map.
0:17:20 > 0:17:22It was the first show they started original
0:17:22 > 0:17:27programming.
0:17:27 > 0:17:33His publicist left him, his agent left him.
0:17:33 > 0:17:37Now, even his Oscar campaign has been cancelled by
0:17:37 > 0:17:42Sony for All the Money in the World, where he plays J Paul Getty and
0:17:42 > 0:17:45everybody thought he would be a very strong candidate to
0:17:45 > 0:17:51win another Oscar this year.
0:17:51 > 0:17:52So the damage is immense, it's almost like
0:17:52 > 0:17:56the end of his career, if it's not the end already.
0:17:56 > 0:17:59Many people say it should be the end of his career, but
0:17:59 > 0:18:04Netflix have made these decisions about him and his future and other
0:18:04 > 0:18:06studios without a proper police investigation, without even
0:18:06 > 0:18:09being charged.
0:18:09 > 0:18:11That was the case with Harvey Weinstein, that was the case
0:18:11 > 0:18:16with all of them.
0:18:16 > 0:18:20This is a question I posed to some of Hollywood stars,
0:18:20 > 0:18:22including Matt Damon and Ben Affleck this morning.
0:18:22 > 0:18:23You've just interviewed Ben Affleck.
0:18:23 > 0:18:29Yes, he said that the public has the right to
0:18:29 > 0:18:33judge these people, because they harm members
0:18:33 > 0:18:35of the public and that somehow the reaction of the public
0:18:35 > 0:18:41has awakened the authorities to these issues.
0:18:41 > 0:18:43Because now they are investigating, at least they're
0:18:43 > 0:18:45opening some investigations.
0:18:45 > 0:18:48But there is, I appreciate what Ben Affleck is
0:18:48 > 0:18:52saying, and that is the
0:18:52 > 0:18:55power of social media as well, but what we have got to remind
0:18:55 > 0:18:57ourselves there is a huge argument that people
0:18:57 > 0:19:00shouldn't be named by people who accuse them of things until they
0:19:00 > 0:19:02have been charged.
0:19:02 > 0:19:05I also asked Matt Damon, who was nearly dragged
0:19:05 > 0:19:07into this quagmire, if you recall, when it started when a journalist
0:19:07 > 0:19:10falsely accused him of trying to kill a story
0:19:10 > 0:19:15about Harvey Weinstein.
0:19:15 > 0:19:18And he said, no, this is not about me.
0:19:18 > 0:19:19This is about the victims.
0:19:19 > 0:19:22I know who I am, I'm a decent guy, everybody knows that.
0:19:22 > 0:19:24And it is true, Matt Damon is one of most
0:19:24 > 0:19:27decent stars in Hollywood.
0:19:27 > 0:19:29But you know the risk, it could happen even
0:19:29 > 0:19:30to somebody like Matt Damon.
0:19:30 > 0:19:33Why do you think it's been an open secret
0:19:33 > 0:19:35for so long?
0:19:35 > 0:19:37What have people like Ben Affleck had to say?
0:19:37 > 0:19:39Did they know that, I mean we all know there
0:19:39 > 0:19:43is some kind of a casting couch culture in Hollywood, but why do you
0:19:43 > 0:19:46think it has been such an open secret, why haven't people like Ben
0:19:46 > 0:19:48Affleck, who say that, come forward and said
0:19:48 > 0:19:49something themselves on
0:19:49 > 0:19:52social media, why are actors so scared to speak out?
0:19:52 > 0:19:56I don't think, when you ask them this question,
0:19:56 > 0:20:01they mostly say, yes, we knew that Harvey for instance was a womaniser.
0:20:01 > 0:20:04Everybody was aware of the casting couch.
0:20:04 > 0:20:07But I don't think, when you ask them that question, they also
0:20:07 > 0:20:10say, we never imagined it to be that brutal.
0:20:10 > 0:20:14Nobody imagined rape.
0:20:14 > 0:20:19Or such systematic, systemic sexual harassment and abuses.
0:20:19 > 0:20:21Do you think some people are too scared to come out
0:20:22 > 0:20:23and say anything?
0:20:23 > 0:20:24Absolutely.
0:20:24 > 0:20:27Absolutely, because these victims, these women were too
