0:00:14 > 0:00:24demanding he step down

0:00:25 > 0:00:28A man told me, we want to get in and tell these people what we think of

0:00:28 > 0:00:35them.

0:00:35 > 0:00:36tell these people what we think of them.

0:00:36 > 0:00:37Former Lebanese Prime Minister Saad Hariri meets

0:00:37 > 0:00:40President Marcon in Paris - and says he WILL go back to Lebanon

0:00:41 > 0:00:42in the coming days.

0:00:42 > 0:00:44The Venezuelan opposition leader, Antonio Ledezma, is in Spain -

0:00:44 > 0:00:46a day after escaping from house arrest in Caracas.

0:00:46 > 0:00:49In football, England Premier League leaders Manchester City brush aside

0:00:49 > 0:00:51Leicester for their sixteenth successive win in all competitions.

0:01:03 > 0:01:05Hello and welcome to World News Today.

0:01:05 > 0:01:11Zimbabwe's President Mugabe is expected to meet the military,

0:01:11 > 0:01:15who have taken power in the country, on Sunday.

0:01:15 > 0:01:24He could be hours away from losing his power.Tens of thousands of

0:01:24 > 0:01:29people joined rallies across the country on Saturday calling for Mr

0:01:29 > 0:01:43Mugabe to go. There are also crowds outside his official residence. They

0:01:43 > 0:01:48want to reinstate the vice president. Despite all of this the

0:01:48 > 0:01:52veteran president remains defiant.

0:01:52 > 0:01:54Our Africa Editor, Feargal Keane reports from Harare.

0:01:54 > 0:01:57Something happened inside the people today.

0:01:57 > 0:01:59A shared energy that helped them into the streets.

0:01:59 > 0:02:05They were there on the big streets and small.

0:02:05 > 0:02:13A common purpose in a place so long divided.

0:02:13 > 0:02:21Voices that wouldn't have dared speak of Robert Mugabe a few days

0:02:21 > 0:02:22ago now sang his political Requiem.

0:02:22 > 0:02:24This is a historic moment.

0:02:24 > 0:02:25It is so special.

0:02:25 > 0:02:27We have waited for this for 37 years!

0:02:27 > 0:02:30You have come back from England, you are happy to see this, I'm sure.

0:02:30 > 0:02:31Indeed, I am very happy.

0:02:31 > 0:02:41This is a new beginning for the people of Zimbabwe.

0:02:43 > 0:02:45What I am seeing here is the death of a dynasty.

0:02:45 > 0:02:48All of the faces of the nation came into Harare.

0:02:48 > 0:02:49Joy was unrestrained.

0:02:49 > 0:02:54And exuberantly expressed.

0:02:54 > 0:02:56Who knows what freedom the military coup will deliver?

0:02:56 > 0:02:59But an army that was once an instrument of oppression

0:02:59 > 0:03:02is now celebrated.

0:03:02 > 0:03:04This tells you everything, this is what the people

0:03:04 > 0:03:08are thinking in Harare.

0:03:08 > 0:03:15-- this is what the people feel about the Army.

0:03:15 > 0:03:21These are moments of genuine leather oration. They thank the soldiers as

0:03:21 > 0:03:27their saviours. -- genuine celebration.

0:03:27 > 0:03:29Fear has been cast off and expectations awakened.

0:03:29 > 0:03:32Watching the march I met this man, a paramedic with a young family.

0:03:32 > 0:03:35Do you believe the army will allow you to be free?

0:03:35 > 0:03:36Yes.

0:03:36 > 0:03:37If they don't?

0:03:37 > 0:03:40Well, it is difficult for them not to allow us to be free,

0:03:40 > 0:03:43because we have been free, we just never exercise our freedom.

0:03:43 > 0:03:44Viva the people of Zimbabwe.

0:03:44 > 0:03:45Viva.

0:03:45 > 0:03:47Those who forced this moment include many who were ardent

0:03:47 > 0:03:49supporters of Robert Mugabe.

0:03:49 > 0:03:54Now they call for the departure of the President and his wife.

0:03:54 > 0:03:58The people of Zimbabwe have spoken, and the people of Zimbabwe have said

0:03:58 > 0:04:05you and your husband should go today and not tomorrow.

0:04:05 > 0:04:08Robert Mugabe is under intense pressure, yet this afternoon

0:04:08 > 0:04:14was refusing to stand down.

0:04:14 > 0:04:17At one of his official residences, the army was pushing back

0:04:17 > 0:04:20demonstrators, but they would not leave the area.

0:04:20 > 0:04:25So people are very angry and they want to get through,

0:04:25 > 0:04:29past these army lines, to this official residence,

0:04:29 > 0:04:31one of the President's official residences.

0:04:31 > 0:04:34A man told me we want to get in and tell these people

0:04:34 > 0:04:38what we think of them.

0:04:38 > 0:04:41Everybody here is now certain that the moment of Robert Mugabe's

0:04:41 > 0:04:48departure is drawing near.

0:04:48 > 0:04:50Let's get the very latest now from my colleague

0:04:50 > 0:04:57Ben Brown, who's in Harare.

0:04:57 > 0:05:05Some extraordinary scenes we are watching. What is it like where you

0:05:05 > 0:05:10are?Amazing to see such euphoria turned on the streets of Harare.

0:05:10 > 0:05:17There were big demonstrations. The people who demonstrated today, it

0:05:17 > 0:05:22was unthinkable in years gone by that they would even question the

0:05:22 > 0:05:26leadership of Robert Mugabe. To come out onto the streets and demand he

0:05:26 > 0:05:33resigns and resigns now. They have lost all the fear they had. This

0:05:33 > 0:05:40follows the fact the Army have lost faith with Robert Mugabe and Zanu-PF

0:05:40 > 0:05:46have lost faith with him as well. What we saw today was people power.

0:05:46 > 0:05:50Tens of thousands on the streets showing they have lost faith with

0:05:50 > 0:05:56Robert Mugabe and demanding he steps down now. Indications are that he

0:05:56 > 0:06:03will not. People close to him how the saying he will not resign. He

0:06:03 > 0:06:07would rather die than resign. The army says it is having more talks

0:06:07 > 0:06:13with him tomorrow to persuade him, or tried to dissuade him, to go

0:06:13 > 0:06:18quietly and with dignity. We also have this meeting of the Zanu-PF

0:06:18 > 0:06:25party, who say they are going to dismiss him. Then we could be seeing

0:06:25 > 0:06:33the vice president brought back in. He was rejected any a few days ago.

0:06:33 > 0:06:39Yes. This is the point. This is what Robert Mugabe is facing. He knows

0:06:39 > 0:06:45time is running out for him. He does not have any friends or allies left.

0:06:45 > 0:06:50Nobody in the country wants him still to be president of the

0:06:50 > 0:06:59country. If he refuses to resign, the leadership of Zanu-PF a meeting

0:06:59 > 0:07:05on Sunday to discuss the posing him. He will no longer be leader of

0:07:05 > 0:07:09Zanu-PF. On Tuesday we expect Parliament would then meet to begin

0:07:09 > 0:07:14possibly impeaching him. In other words this would all be done

0:07:14 > 0:07:18constitutionally. There has been a military takeover but the Army does

0:07:18 > 0:07:23not want to make it look like they are getting rid of him by force,

0:07:23 > 0:07:28through a coup d'etat. They wanted to be done constitutionally. If the

0:07:28 > 0:07:35party him as leader and the parliament deposes him has dashes as

0:07:35 > 0:07:40president, that is what the Army would like to see. They would not be

0:07:40 > 0:07:44blamed as being an army, the military, that has forcefully

0:07:44 > 0:07:51deposed the president.The question is, he'll ever replaces him, the

0:07:51 > 0:07:56question that Fergal Keane was asking people on the streets is, do

0:07:56 > 0:08:04people really believe that would bring them a proper freedom? That is

0:08:04 > 0:08:11absolutely the key question. The vice president has been seen as a

0:08:11 > 0:08:15real strongman of Mugabe's leadership, his government, in years

0:08:15 > 0:08:22gone by. Many people accuse him of being in charge of atrocities will

0:08:22 > 0:08:27stop he has not been known as a champion of democracy and human

0:08:27 > 0:08:32rights. Some people here are saying we might lose Mugabe and have

0:08:32 > 0:08:37somebody not much better in his place. On the other hand, there are

0:08:37 > 0:08:43signs that the military would like to install him. He is their favoured

0:08:43 > 0:08:47candidate, as leader of a new transitional authority but with

0:08:47 > 0:08:52numbers of the opposition involved as well. The opposition MDC. They

0:08:52 > 0:09:00might think matters more palatable to the outside world.Ben Brown

0:09:00 > 0:09:07joining us live from Harare.

0:09:07 > 0:09:09The Lebanese Prime Minister, Saad Hariri, is in France

0:09:09 > 0:09:12where he has confirmed that he will be going back home

0:09:12 > 0:09:13in the next few days.

0:09:13 > 0:09:15France has said it is "ready to organise a meeting

0:09:15 > 0:09:17of the international support group for Lebanon".

0:09:17 > 0:09:19Mr Hariri announced he was standing down

0:09:19 > 0:09:20while in Saudi Arabia a fortnight ago.

0:09:20 > 0:09:22The BBC's Middle East Analyst, Alan Johnston reports.

0:09:22 > 0:09:31The man at the centre of Lebanon's store, Hariri, with his family being

0:09:31 > 0:09:35welcomed in Paris by President Macron. Then there was lunch. The

0:09:35 > 0:09:42president key to show his support for Hariri at a very difficult time.

0:09:42 > 0:09:46When they emerged, Mr Hariri said he was going home.I'm going to Beirut

0:09:46 > 0:09:51in the next few days to celebrate Independence Day. When I am there I

0:09:51 > 0:09:55will make known my political position after meeting with the

0:09:55 > 0:10:03president.This all began far from Paris in the Saudi capital, Riyadh.

0:10:03 > 0:10:07Mr Hariri has been close to the Saudis all through his political

0:10:07 > 0:10:12career. After talks with them he suddenly announced in Riyadh that he

0:10:12 > 0:10:18was resigning. He said he feared he would be fascinated in Lebanon. He

0:10:18 > 0:10:23accused Saudi Arabia's eight regional rival Iran of meddling in

0:10:23 > 0:10:29his country's fares. A reference to Lebanon's powerful Hezbollah

0:10:29 > 0:10:34movement, Iran's life. In Beirut, people were stunned for that nobody

0:10:34 > 0:10:42had seen the resignation coming from but they began to rally behind their

0:10:42 > 0:10:44missing Prime Minister, here showing their support for him during

0:10:44 > 0:10:48Beirut's marathon. Many Lebanese suspected the Saudis had forced Mr

0:10:48 > 0:10:52Hariri to stand down and they might even be holding him against their

0:10:52 > 0:10:57will. Mr Hariri appeared again on television to deny this. His

0:10:57 > 0:11:02relations with the Saudis were very good, he said. In this interview he

0:11:02 > 0:11:08hinted he might even withdraw his resignation. Many questions continue

0:11:08 > 0:11:14to surround this affair. When Mr Hariri comes home in a few days'

0:11:14 > 0:11:17time, his people will hope he will give them more answers, more

0:11:17 > 0:11:20clarity.

0:11:20 > 0:11:23Let's take a look at some of the other stories making the news

0:11:23 > 0:11:26Search efforts in the South Atlantic to find a missing Argentine

0:11:26 > 0:11:28submarine have intensified, with more air and sea craft

0:11:28 > 0:11:30heading for the area.

0:11:30 > 0:11:34The San Juan, which has with forty-four crew on board,

0:11:34 > 0:11:36hasn't been in touch for three days.

0:11:36 > 0:11:38The sub had been returning from a routine mission

0:11:38 > 0:11:44when it disappeared.

0:11:44 > 0:11:47It was last in contact when it was more than 400 kilometres

0:11:47 > 0:11:49off the coast of Patagonia.

0:11:49 > 0:11:5414 civilians are reported to have been killed in a rebel-held

0:11:54 > 0:11:58neighbourhood besieged by Syrian government forces on the outskirts

0:11:58 > 0:12:02of Damascus. The British-based observatory for human rights said

0:12:02 > 0:12:07the victims died in air strikes and shelling in four towns. Syrian state

0:12:07 > 0:12:10media blamed rebels shelling in Damascus.

0:12:10 > 0:12:13The Russian ambassador has dismissed criticism of his country's decision

0:12:13 > 0:12:15to veto a UN Security Council resolution, which would have

0:12:15 > 0:12:17extended an international inquiry into chemical weapons

0:12:17 > 0:12:18attacks in Syria.

0:12:18 > 0:12:20It's the 10th time Moscow has used its veto powers

0:12:20 > 0:12:23at the United Nations in support of its ally since

0:12:23 > 0:12:33the conflict began.

0:12:34 > 0:12:36Stay with us on BBC World News.

0:12:36 > 0:12:39Still to come...

0:12:39 > 0:12:44We will look at tributes for the AC/DC guitarist, Malcolm Young, who

0:12:44 > 0:12:49has died at the age of 64.

0:12:49 > 0:12:51Police looking for 19-year-old Gaia Pope say a body has been found

0:12:51 > 0:12:59on land near Swanage.

0:12:59 > 0:13:05Officers made the discovery at 3pm today near the coastal path where

0:13:05 > 0:13:11items of her clothing were found. She went missing in 11 days ago.

0:13:11 > 0:13:15Three people arrested on suspicion of her murder have been released.

0:13:15 > 0:13:20Her sister said the teenager was the light of her life and a cousin gave

0:13:20 > 0:13:26a statement.This afternoon the emergency services found Giaia's

0:13:26 > 0:13:32body. We are devastated and unable to put those feelings into words. We

0:13:32 > 0:13:37thank you for everything you have done. Our little birdhouse flown but

0:13:37 > 0:13:42will always be with us. The police will be releasing a statement.

0:13:42 > 0:13:47Please respect the privacy of the family at this devastating time and

0:13:47 > 0:13:58keep us in your prayers. Thank you.

0:14:01 > 0:14:04You are watching BBC World News today but that the latest headlines.

0:14:04 > 0:14:09Huge crowds in Harare have marched on President Mugabe's residence as

0:14:09 > 0:14:13the military prepares to meet the embattled leader and persuade him to

0:14:13 > 0:14:18step down. The Lebanese Prime Minister has met the French

0:14:18 > 0:14:21president in Paris. He has confirmed he will be going home in the next

0:14:21 > 0:14:29few days. Let's get more on our top story and President Mugabe being

0:14:29 > 0:14:31forced from power.

0:14:31 > 0:14:34Alex Magaisa, from Kent Law School, was the chief of staff for former

0:14:34 > 0:14:36Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai, who leads the opposition

0:14:36 > 0:14:37to Mr Mugabe.

0:14:37 > 0:14:39He gave us his thoughts on the recent developments

0:14:39 > 0:14:44in his home country.

0:14:44 > 0:14:49This is the first time in a very long time there has been a huge

0:14:49 > 0:14:52convergence of all the different forces in timber dashes back in

0:14:52 > 0:14:57Zimbabwe. I think it is an opportunity for all the parties to

0:14:57 > 0:15:00work together and see if they can chart the way forward. It is

0:15:00 > 0:15:04important for them to understand what the future holds, in particular

0:15:04 > 0:15:09making sure that the road to democracy is prepared. That is

0:15:09 > 0:15:16something that has been lacking in Zimbabwe. We know the military that

0:15:16 > 0:15:21intervened seemed to favour the former vice president but

0:15:21 > 0:15:25Zimbabweans must be given an opportunity to make a choice as to

0:15:25 > 0:15:34who's should lead them. -- who should. Mr Mugabe is a tough man and

0:15:34 > 0:15:37he will fight to the end of the bid is not surprising that even though

0:15:37 > 0:15:43there are offers on the table he is unwilling to take what would be a

0:15:43 > 0:15:51dignified exit and it might end up very ugly. Mr Mugabe has seen lots

0:15:51 > 0:15:54of people coming to his rallies over the past few months and this made

0:15:54 > 0:16:00him believed he is too well loved. I think all of that was a facade.

0:16:00 > 0:16:04People were doing it because that is what they believed they were

0:16:04 > 0:16:08expected to do. In the last few days his party is rejecting him and I

0:16:08 > 0:16:14think he will see very soon that he will be politically isolated.

0:16:14 > 0:16:17Doug Coltart is a human rights lawyer, and activist in Zimbabwe.

0:16:17 > 0:16:23He's been attending the rally in Harare, and joins me via Skype

0:16:23 > 0:16:26I expected cannot believe the scenes. What has it been like for

0:16:26 > 0:16:34you today? It has been an incredible day. For many of us, we were not

0:16:34 > 0:16:39sure we would ever see a day like this where we marched on Statehouse.

0:16:39 > 0:16:48It was incredible, the scenes... The atmosphere was euphoric and joyous.

0:16:48 > 0:16:53I was not alive during the Zimbabwean independence but many

0:16:53 > 0:17:00people told me that the atmosphere felt... They had not felt that since

0:17:00 > 0:17:06Independence Day for the really it has been an incredible day.And yet

0:17:06 > 0:17:11we have Robert Mugabe remaining defiant. He has not gone yet. Do you

0:17:11 > 0:17:16fear that maybe the jubilation and celebration is a little bit

0:17:16 > 0:17:22premature?I would not say it is premature but I think there is good

0:17:22 > 0:17:30reason for why people feel this energy, this excitement, the

0:17:30 > 0:17:35transition, and irreversible transition has begun. Certainly

0:17:35 > 0:17:41there is a lot of reasons for caution and Zimbabweans, we are not

0:17:41 > 0:17:49through the woods by any means. Zimbabwe -- Mugabe needs to step

0:17:49 > 0:17:54down. Then there are huge queries about the agenda of the military and

0:17:54 > 0:18:03the potential for imposition of a new leader. I think the fear for

0:18:03 > 0:18:08many people is that this will just remain an internal transition within

0:18:08 > 0:18:13Zanu-PF and will not bring real change. Today, seeing the masses

0:18:13 > 0:18:19come out in such an unprecedented scale, it really takes us down a

0:18:19 > 0:18:23path where ordinary citizens are starting to demand that they want to

0:18:23 > 0:18:28have a stake in this transition process.And I suppose all eyes are

0:18:28 > 0:18:32on the former vice president will stop the question is whether he

0:18:32 > 0:18:40would we any different from Robert Mugabe. He may still be seen as the

0:18:40 > 0:18:47old guard.Absolutely. It seems that the military does favour the former

0:18:47 > 0:18:52vice president. To that degree he probably needs to have a significant

0:18:52 > 0:18:56and important role in the transition process. He does seem to have the

0:18:56 > 0:19:03backing of the military. He comes from the same chequered past that

0:19:03 > 0:19:07Zanu-PF has been through. He was involved in many of the atrocities

0:19:07 > 0:19:12that Zanu-PF have committed. I think what we are saying is it is

0:19:12 > 0:19:18essential that this is an inclusive transition process where people from

0:19:18 > 0:19:23all political parties, civil societies, trade unions...We will

0:19:23 > 0:19:26have to leave it there. It'll be very interesting to see what

0:19:26 > 0:19:36happens.

0:19:46 > 0:19:53It is an image of defiance that summoned -- that Venezuelans were

0:19:53 > 0:20:03emboldened by. The former mayor of Caracas a staunch critic. Safe

0:20:03 > 0:20:08having crossed the border into Colombia. Until last week he was

0:20:08 > 0:20:11under house arrest, accused of plotting a coup to overthrow the

0:20:11 > 0:20:19Government. He spent more than 1000 days in detention and now speaks for

0:20:19 > 0:20:23Venezuelan political prisoners. TRANSLATION: I will concentrate on

0:20:23 > 0:20:26travelling the world in excise. I will contribute and be an extension

0:20:26 > 0:20:32of the hope of the Venezuelan people to get rid of this regime, this

0:20:32 > 0:20:36dictatorship.Venezuela is the victim of a regime that is colluding
