0:01:29 > 0:01:35Hello and welcome to World News Today.

0:01:35 > 0:01:40We start with news that President Trump's former national

0:01:40 > 0:01:43security advisor Michael Flynn has pleaded guilty to lying to the FBI

0:01:43 > 0:01:47about his contact with Russia.

0:01:47 > 0:01:50Mr Flynn is the most senior former official to be charged so far

0:01:50 > 0:01:53in the investigation into alleged Russian meddling in last year's US

0:01:53 > 0:02:00presidential election.

0:02:00 > 0:02:04A lawyer for the White House has said nothing about the guilty plea

0:02:04 > 0:02:13or charge implicates anyone other than Mr Flynn.

0:02:13 > 0:02:17This is Mr Flynn leaving court earlier.

0:02:17 > 0:02:22US media say that Mr Flynn is prepared to give testimony that Mr

0:02:22 > 0:02:26Trump's son-in-law, Jared Kushner, was amongst the members of the

0:02:26 > 0:02:28President's transitional team who directed intimate contact with the

0:02:28 > 0:02:33Russians.

0:02:33 > 0:02:35Aleem Maqbool has the latest.

0:02:35 > 0:02:37It has sent political shock waves through Washington.

0:02:37 > 0:02:43General Michael Flynn, Donald Trump's former

0:02:43 > 0:02:45national security adviser, turned himself in to the FBI,

0:02:45 > 0:02:47and to a judge admitted lying about his contacts

0:02:48 > 0:02:49with Russian officials.

0:03:03 > 0:03:10General Michael Flynn!

0:03:10 > 0:03:16Michael Flynn developed a close relationship with Donald Trump

0:03:16 > 0:03:19during the election campaign, and at one point he was talked

0:03:19 > 0:03:22of as a potential vice-president.

0:03:22 > 0:03:23A truly great general.

0:03:23 > 0:03:24Mike, thank you.

0:03:24 > 0:03:26At the Republican National Convention, he famously led

0:03:26 > 0:03:27chanting for Hillary Clinton to be imprisoned.

0:03:27 > 0:03:31Lock her up!

0:03:31 > 0:03:33All the focus now is on the mistake Michael Flynn made after

0:03:33 > 0:03:36Donald Trump's win at the polls, when Barack Obama was still

0:03:36 > 0:03:38in office and had imposed sanctions on Russia for interfering

0:03:39 > 0:03:43with the US election.

0:03:43 > 0:03:45On 29th December, Michael Flynn spoke to the Russian ambassador

0:03:45 > 0:03:50on the phone in the first of a series of calls.

0:03:50 > 0:03:52On 15th January, Vice-President Mike Pence said sanctions were not

0:03:52 > 0:03:56discussed by Michael Flynn in those calls.

0:03:56 > 0:03:58Only after 9th February, when a newspaper revealed

0:03:58 > 0:04:01General Flynn did discuss sanctions when he was not organised to do so,

0:04:01 > 0:04:05did pressure increase and Michael Flynn lost his job.

0:04:05 > 0:04:09-- authorised.

0:04:09 > 0:04:11Michael Flynn then became one of those investigated

0:04:11 > 0:04:13by the Special Counsel into Russia's attempts to influence the election

0:04:13 > 0:04:16and the potential collusion with the Trump campaign.

0:04:16 > 0:04:20This is unquestionably the biggest moment of the Russia investigation.

0:04:20 > 0:04:24Michael Flynn is the most senior member of Donald Trump's

0:04:24 > 0:04:27team to be indicted, and is accused of lying

0:04:27 > 0:04:32to FBI agents while still serving the White House.

0:04:32 > 0:04:36Most importantly, we now believe Michael Flynn will testify

0:04:36 > 0:04:38that he was directed to talk to the Russian ambassador

0:04:38 > 0:04:41when he was not supposed to by a senior official

0:04:41 > 0:04:43in Donald Trump's transition team, bringing this investigation ever

0:04:43 > 0:04:44closer to the President himself.

0:04:44 > 0:04:52Aleem Maqbool, Washington.

0:04:52 > 0:04:53Let's get more on this.

0:04:53 > 0:04:57Laura Bicker is in Washington.

0:04:57 > 0:05:00A new development, latest development. It is developing quite

0:05:00 > 0:05:04fast. Jared Kushner is the latest name to be thrown very squarely into

0:05:04 > 0:05:13the ring. Just take us through the context. There could be a number of

0:05:13 > 0:05:17officials certainly involved in this. But this was in regards to who

0:05:17 > 0:05:23told Michael Flynn to contact the Russians. Now according to the

0:05:23 > 0:05:28charge sheet, there was a senior official and a very senior official.

0:05:28 > 0:05:35US media here are touting Jared Kushner's name is one of those who

0:05:35 > 0:05:43told Michael Flynn to contact the Russian ambassador. Now, we have not

0:05:43 > 0:05:45got that independently confirmed but he is just one name that the US

0:05:45 > 0:05:50media are putting out there. That would be significant. It takes this

0:05:50 > 0:05:56trail closer to the Oval Office. But remember, when it comes to this

0:05:56 > 0:06:00investigation, it is worth looking exactly what Robert Mueller is

0:06:00 > 0:06:05trying to figure out. He is trying to look at whether or not Russia

0:06:05 > 0:06:11colluded with the Trump campaign to help Donald Trump win the election.

0:06:11 > 0:06:14And part of that is to see what contact they had with the Russians

0:06:14 > 0:06:20and when. And Michael Flynn lied about his contact with the Russian

0:06:20 > 0:06:29ambassador. As well as to the FBI. That is why he has pleaded guilty

0:06:29 > 0:06:34today. The other question is, in return for the guilty plea, what

0:06:34 > 0:06:39else is he told the Special Counsel, Robert Mueller?Indeed. The next

0:06:39 > 0:06:44question is if Jared Kushner directed Flynn, who directed Jared

0:06:44 > 0:06:48Kushner? Hopefully we will learn more about that. James Comey is

0:06:48 > 0:06:55another name we hear quite a lot during this latest news. He has been

0:06:55 > 0:07:01tweeting as well. Tell us about that.James Comey was the former

0:07:01 > 0:07:05director of the FBI. One of the reasons why, if you're wondering why

0:07:05 > 0:07:09the name Michael Flynn sounds most familiar, it's because when James

0:07:09 > 0:07:12Comey was fired, he gave testimony to Congress that President Trump

0:07:12 > 0:07:18urged him to drop the investigation into Michael Flynn. The conversation

0:07:18 > 0:07:25that he recounted in notes he had taken straight afterwards was that

0:07:25 > 0:07:29Mr Trump asked him to let the investigation go. To let Michael

0:07:29 > 0:07:35Flynn go. James Comey has tweeted and has been incognito on Twitter

0:07:35 > 0:07:40for some time, finally using his own Twitter handle. You said, like

0:07:40 > 0:07:42justice roll down like waters and righteousness like an ever flowing

0:07:42 > 0:07:48frame. Not hiding the fact he is pleased.Very quickly, we have still

0:07:48 > 0:07:54not heard anything on this subject from Mr Trump but there has been

0:07:54 > 0:07:57talk of a bit of deflection going on. He has tweeted today but what

0:07:57 > 0:08:02about Rex Tillerson.Yesterday, we were wondering if Rex Tillerson

0:08:02 > 0:08:07could survive. Whether his future was extremely uncertain. There have

0:08:07 > 0:08:13been tensions between the two for several months. In Donald Trump's

0:08:13 > 0:08:16tweet, he describes reports Rex Tillerson was to be pushed out the

0:08:16 > 0:08:19door as fake news. He says Rex Tillerson is here to stay and

0:08:19 > 0:08:26admitted that they had differences but they are working on it. It looks

0:08:26 > 0:08:29like, for the moment at least, the Secretary of State will keep his

0:08:29 > 0:08:34job.OK, thank you for that.

0:08:34 > 0:08:37We can cross now to Washington DC and talk

0:08:37 > 0:08:40to Elizabeth Wydra, a Supreme Court litigator and legal expert.

0:08:40 > 0:08:46Thank you very much for joining us. It is all about the deal. How is

0:08:46 > 0:08:57this deal working, as you understand?Absolutely. It is a deal

0:08:57 > 0:09:01that we have the former national security adviser to President Trump

0:09:01 > 0:09:04pleading guilty to lying about talking to Russian contacts. The

0:09:04 > 0:09:12even bigger deal is what did he agree to give Robert -- Robert

0:09:12 > 0:09:17Mueller in exchange that plea deal? We know that he is implicating

0:09:17 > 0:09:22senior presidential transition officials. Rumours have been

0:09:22 > 0:09:25swirling that perhaps it is Jared Kushner, even Mike Pence, even at

0:09:25 > 0:09:31present himself. -- the president himself. We're getting closer to

0:09:31 > 0:09:36senior level Trump administration officials. You don't make a deal

0:09:36 > 0:09:39with someone very high level like Mike Flynn unless he can give you

0:09:39 > 0:09:43someone who is an even bigger fish. Dairy Crest pleaded guilty. What

0:09:43 > 0:09:50happens next in the investigation? -- he has pleaded guilty.I am sure

0:09:50 > 0:09:53Robert Mueller is meticulously putting together all these bits of

0:09:53 > 0:10:00information, as was just discussed. Michael Flynn was key to a lot of

0:10:00 > 0:10:05what was going on in the potential collision with the Russians and

0:10:05 > 0:10:10attentional obstruction of justice with the filing of James Comey.

0:10:10 > 0:10:13Flynn's name comes up again and again. You can be sure that Robert

0:10:13 > 0:10:18Mueller and his ace team are putting together how all those dots are

0:10:18 > 0:10:24connected through Michael Flynn and with his senior Trump characters,

0:10:24 > 0:10:28like perhaps even the President's son-in-law has Vice President, being

0:10:28 > 0:10:33implicated, we're getting ever closer to the Oval Office. Robert

0:10:33 > 0:10:36Mueller is not going to go there unless he knows for sure that he has

0:10:36 > 0:10:42got the goods. Between the Flynn deal and the earlier deal, I think

0:10:42 > 0:10:44that Robert Mueller is probably putting together a very damning

0:10:44 > 0:10:49case.This is a federal crime. What does that mean in terms of the

0:10:49 > 0:10:55reality of a sentence? What is the likelihood that will be reduced as

0:10:55 > 0:11:03part of this deal?Yes, absolutely. It seems, just from what we known

0:11:03 > 0:11:06reports, that Flynn could have been charged with several other and

0:11:06 > 0:11:11perhaps even serious crimes that are lying to the FBI, which is itself a

0:11:11 > 0:11:16very serious charge and is a felony. It does seem that by only charging

0:11:16 > 0:11:20him with lying to the FBI, Robert Mueller and the Special Counsel

0:11:20 > 0:11:26decided to lower the charges and potential sentence for Mr Flynn, and

0:11:26 > 0:11:34possibly even have either a Lord liability for Michael Flynn's son,

0:11:34 > 0:11:38Michael Flynn Junior, or perhaps even getting Michael Flynn Junior of

0:11:38 > 0:11:42completely. We do not know exactly the terms of how that cooperation

0:11:42 > 0:11:49deal came about. But it is very likely. What happens in most plea

0:11:49 > 0:11:52deals is that you get a lower charge and then also the Special Counsel or

0:11:52 > 0:12:03I commend in law sentence to the federal judge. -- will recommend a

0:12:03 > 0:12:09lesser sentence.You have been watching this. A White House lawyer

0:12:09 > 0:12:13has said this guilty plea is only regarding Mr Flynn. It was not

0:12:13 > 0:12:20impact on anybody. Did the Fat "Wishful thinking" pass your mind?

0:12:20 > 0:12:26-- the thought.Absolutely. I'm sure he would like that to be true but it

0:12:26 > 0:12:31is not the case. What we have found from the charging information is

0:12:31 > 0:12:36referenced a very senior transition officials. This is definitely not

0:12:36 > 0:12:40the end of it. It is indeed wishful thinking if they think that the

0:12:40 > 0:12:44Special Counsel investigation will wrap up very soon and without this

0:12:44 > 0:12:48touching even closer to the heart of the Trump administration.

0:12:48 > 0:12:53Interesting. Elizabeth, thank you very much. Thank you.

0:12:53 > 0:13:03Let's move on and look at the fair is taking place in Europe. --

0:13:03 > 0:13:07affairs.

0:13:07 > 0:13:10The EU will refuse to begin talks on a post-Brexit trade deal

0:13:10 > 0:13:12if Ireland is not satisfied with the UK's offer

0:13:12 > 0:13:13on the Northern Irish border.

0:13:13 > 0:13:15That's according to the European Council President.

0:13:15 > 0:13:17Donald Tusk held a joint news conference with the Irish Prime

0:13:17 > 0:13:18Minister Leo Varadkar in Dublin.

0:13:18 > 0:13:22Ireland has urged the UK to be clearer on how it plans to avoid

0:13:22 > 0:13:24a hard border between the Republic and Northern Ireland.

0:13:24 > 0:13:27Mr Tusk - who will chair a crunch summit of EU

0:13:27 > 0:13:29leaders in two weeks' time - said the border within Ireland must

0:13:30 > 0:13:34remain a symbol of cooperation.

0:13:34 > 0:13:40We have agreed today that before proposing guidelines on transition,

0:13:40 > 0:13:46I will consult the Taoiseach if the UK offer is sufficient for the Irish

0:13:46 > 0:13:55government. Let me say very clearly, if the UK offer is unacceptable for

0:13:55 > 0:14:01Ireland, it will also be an acceptable for the EU. I realise

0:14:01 > 0:14:03that for some British politicians, this might be hard to understand.

0:14:03 > 0:14:12But such is the logic can't the fact that Ireland is an EU member while

0:14:12 > 0:14:19the UK is leaving. This is why the key to the UK's future lies, in some

0:14:19 > 0:14:30ways," at least as long as Brexit mega- sheesh and is are you ongoing.

0:14:30 > 0:14:40-- in Dublin, at least as long as Brexit negotiations are ongoing.

0:14:40 > 0:14:41Pope Francis, who's visiting Bangladesh,

0:14:41 > 0:14:44has met some of the more than 600-thousand Rohingya Muslims

0:14:44 > 0:14:45who've fled violence in Myanmar.

0:14:45 > 0:14:48He used the word "Rohingya" in public for the first time -

0:14:48 > 0:14:49a controversial move because the Myanmar government

0:14:49 > 0:14:51doesn't recognise the Rohingya as an ethnic group.

0:14:51 > 0:14:53The refugees had been brought to the capital

0:14:53 > 0:14:55Dhaka from Cox's Bazar, where more than 600,000

0:14:55 > 0:14:57men, women and children from Myanmar's Rakhine

0:14:57 > 0:14:58state have fled.

0:14:58 > 0:15:01Yogita Limaye is following the Pope's visit.

0:15:01 > 0:15:11Their plight has overshadowed his visit to Myanmar and Bangladesh,

0:15:20 > 0:15:23and today, a group of Rohingya refugees met Pope Francis in Dhaka.

0:15:23 > 0:15:25One by one, they had a chance to tell him

0:15:25 > 0:15:26what they've been through.

0:15:26 > 0:15:29Up until now, Pope Francis had avoided using the term

0:15:29 > 0:15:31"Rohingya", which is how these people identify themselves.

0:15:31 > 0:15:32But a word that Myanmar refuses to recognise.

0:15:32 > 0:15:34But today, the Pope was more outspoken.

0:15:34 > 0:15:37At a meeting of religious leaders, the Pope asked for forgiveness

0:15:37 > 0:15:39from Rohingya refugees for the hurt they've endured, and for

0:15:39 > 0:15:40the indifference of the world.

0:15:40 > 0:15:42It's a crisis that has overshadowed the Pope's visit

0:15:43 > 0:15:44to Myanmar and Bangladesh.

0:15:44 > 0:15:45Regardless of the politics around the Pope's visit,

0:15:45 > 0:15:48for many people from the Catholic community of Bangladesh,

0:15:48 > 0:15:51it was a chance to see the leader of their religion in person.

0:15:51 > 0:15:57They're a tiny percentage of the population of this country,

0:15:57 > 0:16:00but you couldn't tell that by looking at the crowds here.

0:16:00 > 0:16:02Tens of thousands have come from different parts of Bangladesh.

0:16:02 > 0:16:06And they weren't disappointed.

0:16:06 > 0:16:08Before he said Mass, Pope Francis took a quick

0:16:08 > 0:16:09tour through the crowd.

0:16:09 > 0:16:14For some, it was a moment they'll remember forever.

0:16:14 > 0:16:17He's the first Pope to visit Bangladesh in more than 30 years.

0:16:17 > 0:16:22I'm so happy and so blessed that I got to get here in this space,

0:16:22 > 0:16:25so there are lots of people that couldn't come over here.

0:16:25 > 0:16:26So I'm so lucky!

0:16:26 > 0:16:33I can see the Pope so near.

0:16:33 > 0:16:35I was in tears when I saw him.

0:16:35 > 0:16:37When I saw him, I thought I'm seeing Jesus.

0:16:37 > 0:16:39I was saying, "God bless you, Papa.

0:16:39 > 0:16:40God bless you.

0:16:40 > 0:16:50I'm so happy to see you again."

0:16:54 > 0:16:56For this small community, the Pope's visit is reassurance that

0:16:56 > 0:16:57they're part of something bigger.

0:16:57 > 0:17:00But for another minority, it brought hope that one of the most

0:17:00 > 0:17:02influential leaders of the world could help them.

0:17:02 > 0:17:05Yogita Limaye, BBC News, Dhaka.

0:17:05 > 0:17:08Stay with us on BBC World News, still to come...

0:17:08 > 0:17:11Prince Harry and his fiancee Meghan Markle

0:17:11 > 0:17:14are on their first joint official public engagement in the UK.

0:17:14 > 0:17:17We'll find out why the city of Nottingham in the English Midlands

0:17:17 > 0:17:20has a special place in the prince's heart.

0:17:34 > 0:17:40I am feeling so helpless. The children are dying in front of me

0:17:40 > 0:17:55and I can't do anything.Charles Manson is the leader of the hippie

0:17:55 > 0:17:58cult who called Sharon Tate and at least six others in Los Angeles. --

0:17:58 > 0:18:00killed.

0:18:07 > 0:18:11At 11 a:m., just half a metre of rock separated Britain from

0:18:11 > 0:18:14continental Europe. It took the drills just a few moments to cut

0:18:14 > 0:18:21through the final obstacle. And then this mine was shaking hands and

0:18:21 > 0:18:28exchanging flags with his opposite number. -- miner.

0:18:38 > 0:18:39This is BBC World News Today.

0:18:39 > 0:18:41The latest headlines...

0:18:41 > 0:18:42President Trump's sacked national security adviser,

0:18:42 > 0:18:45Michael Flynn, pleads guilty to charges that he lied to the FBI

0:18:45 > 0:18:51about contacts with Russia.

0:18:51 > 0:18:55US media reports he will testify that Donald Trump's son-in-law Jared

0:18:55 > 0:18:57Kushner was amongst those who directed him to make contact with

0:18:57 > 0:19:04Russia.

0:19:04 > 0:19:13Dutch pathologists say that an autopsy suggests the former Bosnian

0:19:13 > 0:19:16Croat leader died of cyanide poisoning. He swallowed the Floyd

0:19:16 > 0:19:21Wells in the dock at the Yugoslav war crimes tribunal on Wednesday.

0:19:21 > 0:19:25The child Bruno has begun an internal investigation which it

0:19:25 > 0:19:29hopes to complete before the court as wind up at the end of the year,

0:19:29 > 0:19:33focusing on how he got hold of the poison.

0:19:33 > 0:19:39Now for all the sport.

0:19:39 > 0:19:42Now the planning can really begin for the 32 teams preparing

0:19:42 > 0:19:44for the World Cup in Russia.

0:19:44 > 0:19:46The draw for the tournament's group stage has taken place in Moscow,

0:19:46 > 0:19:50so let's show you how the balls came out.

0:19:50 > 0:19:52The hosts will open their World Cup with a match

0:19:53 > 0:19:55against Saudi Arabia on June 14th.

0:19:55 > 0:20:00The first game of the tournament.

0:20:00 > 0:20:03Group B has paired Portugal with neighbours Spain

0:20:03 > 0:20:04while Argentina have been drawn alongside Iceland,

0:20:04 > 0:20:07who have qualified for the tournament for the first time...

0:20:07 > 0:20:13That's in Group D.

0:20:13 > 0:20:18The task for Brazil and Germany is to win their groups.

0:20:18 > 0:20:21Or they'll be playing each other in the last 16.

0:20:21 > 0:20:24And Belgium,

0:20:24 > 0:20:26with their host of Premier League stars, are in the same

0:20:26 > 0:20:28group as England.

0:20:28 > 0:20:30Who are also joined by Panana.

0:20:30 > 0:20:32Another team making their tournament debut.

0:20:32 > 0:20:35It's a fairly even distribution of talent across the eight groups

0:20:35 > 0:20:37with plenty of coaches and players relieved to have

0:20:37 > 0:20:41avoided each other.

0:20:41 > 0:20:43Perhaps with the exception of Portugal and Spain,

0:20:43 > 0:20:45together in Group B,

0:20:45 > 0:20:50with the European Champions the seeded team of course.

0:20:50 > 0:20:52But not necessarily the favourites.

0:20:52 > 0:20:55Their defender Jose Fonte told us they'll make sure not to focus

0:20:55 > 0:20:57too much on just that match.

0:20:57 > 0:21:01We have to look at the Moroccan side with exactly the same respect as

0:21:01 > 0:21:05France. There are no easy games, as we found out in the group stages. We

0:21:05 > 0:21:09look forward to the first game. It will be fiery. You had better put

0:21:09 > 0:21:16your shin pads on. Exciting. I am excited. I'm sure everyone in

0:21:16 > 0:21:20Portugal will be excited. It is not an easy grip. But we look forward to

0:21:20 > 0:21:26it. -- group.

0:21:26 > 0:21:29Italy a notable absence in the World Cup draw.

0:21:29 > 0:21:32But their two best club sides are playing in Serie A.

0:21:32 > 0:21:34Leaders Napoli and defending champions Juventus are first

0:21:34 > 0:21:37and third in the current table.

0:21:37 > 0:21:39And it's Juve who lead through Gonzalo Higuain's goal

0:21:39 > 0:21:43against his former club.

0:21:43 > 0:21:45They'll move second and reduce the gap to Napoli to just

0:21:45 > 0:21:50a point if they win.

0:21:50 > 0:21:52Earlier, Roma beat Spal 3-1 and stay fourth.

0:21:52 > 0:21:55It's just a few hours until the second Ashes

0:21:55 > 0:21:56test starts in Adelaide.

0:21:56 > 0:21:59It will be partly played under floodlights as the experiment with

0:21:59 > 0:22:00day-night test cricket continues.

0:22:00 > 0:22:03England are one down against Australia and have concerns

0:22:03 > 0:22:06over all rounder Moeen Ali, who may not be able to bowl

0:22:06 > 0:22:08because of a finger injury.

0:22:08 > 0:22:12The decision was to give him an extra day of trying to wrest it and

0:22:12 > 0:22:18make sure that it is as ready as it can be. Have another look at things

0:22:18 > 0:22:21after practice and see how he is then and see if there is any more

0:22:21 > 0:22:25damage to it, then we will make a decision from the. We will have a

0:22:25 > 0:22:31clear indication of whether he will be fit to tet-mac three. His batting

0:22:31 > 0:22:34has been strong for some time, so you would still close the batting.

0:22:34 > 0:22:40We know these wickets well. Making sure we adapt accordingly to

0:22:40 > 0:22:43whatever the wicket. And whatever England's plans throw up. Ensuring

0:22:43 > 0:22:53that we are on from the first ball. Hopefully we can get into the game

0:22:53 > 0:22:57early and take some momentum from the last game as well.

0:22:57 > 0:22:59Tiger Woods continues to impress in his first competitive

0:23:00 > 0:23:01golf for more than 300 days

0:23:01 > 0:23:04as he remains in contention after two rounds of the Hero World

0:23:04 > 0:23:0668 on Friday to add to his

0:23:06 > 0:23:08Challenge in the Bahamas.

0:23:08 > 0:23:10A 68 on Friday to add to his

0:23:10 > 0:23:12opening round 69 has him on seven under par,

0:23:12 > 0:23:14five shots off the lead held by fellow American Charley Hoffman

0:23:14 > 0:23:16who's three ahead of Jordan Spieth.

0:23:16 > 0:23:18Woods is one of four players on seven under

0:23:18 > 0:23:22and admits he's still got a long way to go after more than 10 months out.

0:23:22 > 0:23:24And that's all the sport for now.

0:23:24 > 0:23:27Prince Harry and his fiancee Meghan Markle have taken

0:23:27 > 0:23:34part in their first official engagement together.

0:23:34 > 0:23:36They were greeted by crowds of well-wishers in the city of

0:23:36 > 0:23:42Nottingham as they visited world aids Day charity fair.

0:23:55 > 0:23:57As an actress, she's been used to a public stage.

0:23:57 > 0:24:00She's accustomed to meeting crowds and dealing with fans.

0:24:00 > 0:24:02Little surprise, then, that Meghan Markle handled her first

0:24:02 > 0:24:04official public appearance in her new role with

0:24:04 > 0:24:05considerable confidence.

0:24:05 > 0:24:06Husband-to-be was on hand, solicitous and supportive,

0:24:06 > 0:24:09with a lot of eye contact between them and supportive arms

0:24:09 > 0:24:10going around each other's backs.

0:24:10 > 0:24:13At times, they met the crowds together, but then Meghan

0:24:13 > 0:24:14branched off on her own, stopping and taking

0:24:14 > 0:24:18time with people.

0:24:18 > 0:24:24While Harry did the same thing on his side of the street.

0:24:24 > 0:24:26Moments later, they were reunited, the cue for more back-rubbing.

0:24:26 > 0:24:30This clearly is a team effort and the new recruit seems a natural.

0:24:30 > 0:24:35She will do hundreds and hundreds of events like this

0:24:35 > 0:24:38in the years to come, but she will remember this one,

0:24:38 > 0:24:40her first official encounter with the British public.

0:24:40 > 0:24:42And the verdict on her performance?

0:24:42 > 0:24:45I think she's great. A good addition to the Royal family.

0:24:45 > 0:24:46Definitely.

0:24:46 > 0:24:47Yeah.

0:24:47 > 0:24:48An American.

0:24:48 > 0:24:49Go, mixed kids!

0:24:49 > 0:24:51Yeah, mixed kids in the royal family now.

0:24:51 > 0:24:54It was just fabulous and we're just so excited that they've come

0:24:54 > 0:24:56to Nottingham for their first public appearance and we're very excited

0:24:56 > 0:25:04about the wedding in May.

0:25:04 > 0:25:07The couple heard about the work of the Terrence Higgins Trust,

0:25:07 > 0:25:09the charity which has worked for years to help people

0:25:09 > 0:25:10suffering from HIV-AIDS.

0:25:10 > 0:25:13It's a cause Harry, now with Meghan, wants to take forward

0:25:13 > 0:25:18in tribute to his late mother.

0:25:18 > 0:25:21At a local college, they heard about the effort to help young

0:25:21 > 0:25:23people keep out of trouble, serious issues to which Harry,

0:25:23 > 0:25:25through a charitable trust, is devoting serious attention.

0:25:25 > 0:25:28But for all that, there was no doubt who sparkled the most today -

0:25:28 > 0:25:32the woman with the diamond.

0:25:32 > 0:25:34I saw her ring and the diamond is massive!

0:25:34 > 0:25:38It's absolutely gorgeous.

0:25:38 > 0:25:41Just knowing that you're sitting near Meghan and Prince Harry,

0:25:41 > 0:25:46it's jaw-dropping, it's really nice.

0:25:46 > 0:25:47A glittering future, then?

0:25:47 > 0:25:57It certainly seems to augur well.
