Grand Final Eurovision Song Contest

Good evening to everyone back in the United Kingdom. This is Graham

Norton wading you a warm welcome to the Eurovision Song Contest 2016,

the 61st contest. You join me and 10,000 other people packed into the

Globe Arena here in Stockholm. Sweden won it last year with Heroes

and Mans Zelmerlow. Everybody just getting ready here. This Globe Arena

was built in '89 and has hosted the Eurovision Song Contest in the year

2000. OK, down to the serious matter at hand. This is the Opening

Ceremony, the flag ceremony, when all the acts come out on the stage.

No physical flags tonight. Instead they're projected flags onto these

extraordinary white costumes. The costumes were designed and they are

hand folded. They are draped on models.

The music is a mix of Swedish dance tracks, people like Swedish house

Mafia Alesso. Here's the first country, Belgium. And Laura.

The first time the Czech Republic have been in a final, well, ever.

It's going to be a great show tonight. Do stay with us. We'll be

here for about three-and-a-half hours, I imagine. There is a twist

to the voting this year. There's a change to the way the results will

be announced. Basically, it's just going to make it more dramatic at

the end. More about that in a bit. A live performance from Justin

Timberlake as well. And Joe and Jake will be flying the flag for Britain.

They are performing in 25th place. 25 out of 26. So you can wait for

them. I'm a bit like cheap wine, I don't travel very well, but I have

so enjoyed my time here in Stockholm. They put on a wonderful

welcome. The Swedes love Eurovision, I mean, deeply. They've got so good

at it. It's just three years since we were in Malmo and now we're back.

The production is stunning. You can follow all the action tonight with

BBC Eurovision on Twitter, Facebook and bbc.co.uk/Eurovision. Bulgaria

very popular. Not as popular as this next man, Sweden, it's Frans. He's

only 17 years old that boy and he will be performing in ninth place.

That's the only draw, the draw for the host country, which position

they're going to be performing in. Sweden got number nine. For the

rest, the producers put together. We are 25 out of 26. In the past few

years, with the semifinals, a lot of the dross has been filtered out. Not

tonight, ladies and gentleman! A couple of corkers have slipped

through the net. Of course, tonight is being watched

worldwide by only 200 million people in 50 countries.

Wonder if they get to keep the costumes.

All the time in the gym and that's what he's doing. I should remind you

of course that as in most years, some of tonight's performances will

contain flashing images and strobe effects.

Now it's time to meet our hosts. They are familiar faces to our

vision fans. It's last year's winner, Mans Zelmerlow and Petra

Mede, she hosted it two years ago and worked in me in London when we

hosted the 60th anniversary of Eurovision. They are genuinely

funny. They're competent. They do, honestly, the interval song, they do

an homage to Eurovision that is genius. You will, if you're a fan,

you'll love it. As I say, the lighting tonight, they

have gone hog wild. I'm told there are 90 million pixels in the

staging. Write that down and remember it.

Ladies and gentleman, welcome to Stockholm, Sweden, and the Grand

Final of the biggest music competition in the world, my name is

Petra Mede. CHEERING.

The crowd really love these two, because they hosted the semifinals

during the week. They're well known here. And my name is Mans Zelmerlow.

This is the moment we've all been waiting for. Tonight 26 countries

will compete for the win, while over 50 countries are watching live,

including China and, for the first time ever, the US.

CHEERING And when we reach the end of the show, in approximately three

to eight hours... LAUGHTER

We will have a new champion and the reigning champion, Mans will go back

to being Mans Zelmerlow again. Do you know what that means? Yes. I can

eat carbs again. Yes! Congratulations. This competition

was created in 1956 to unify a continent torn apart by war. And

right now Europe is once again facing darker times. That reminds us

just how important this evening actually is. Because tonight, we set

aside any differences we might have and unite through our love for

music. This is what is so beautiful about this contest and exciting.

Another beautiful thing about this contest is the fans, who have

travelled here from all over the world, surrounding us right now.

CHEERING You truly are the best and the most

devoted audience in the world. Yes, you are. And I might add, the most

respectful audience in the world. I was at a Eurovision party last night

surrounded by fans and none of the guys came onto me.

LAUGHTER Was it the same for you? Well... Any way. 26 nervous artists

are waiting back stage ready to win your hearts and your support,

because the power rests in your hands, together with the national

juries in every country. Vote by calling or... This is the annoying

bit where I speak over people speaking demrish. I apologise every

year, I'm sorry. I need to explain some things. UK voters cannot vote

by text the the lines won't open until the last song has been

performed. You may have heard that there's a new system for this year.

It's designed to make a more dramatic finish. Juries watch the

rehearsal and cast their votes, which are converted into points. The

spokesperson from each country will announce that. Those points are

added to the scoreboard first. Once that's done, the public votes from

each country will be converted into another set of points. They are then

put into a big pot and added together. Petra and Mans will

announce them from the lowest to the highiest. If you want to know more

about these changes, Richard Osman has made a film and it is available

on the website. This won't take any longer, but it will heighten the

suspense. It might take a little longer! Are we ready to start the

competition? Oh, yes, we are, Mans. CHEERING Really good atmosphere

here, as I say, Stockholm is just putting on the biggest party. Lot

the Eurovision Song Contest begin! OK. We're up and running, the small

stand-alone spores create a big dandelion. The theme is "come

together". I'd like to be at that meeting, but there you go, they

signed off on it. The first song is Belgium. The young girl is 19. She's

Laura Tesoro. The song is called What's the Pressure.

Age 11 she performed as Anni and now she's doing this upbeat, funky

number. It's a catchy pop song. But it is difficult performing in the

first place. So, we begin song number one for

Pressure. The pressure is being 19 and opening this show. Onto number

two, the Czech Republic have never appeared in the final before. This

is Gabriela Guncikova, with I Stand. A woman standing alone, belting out

a massive Eurovision and them. No Irish involvement, but one of the

co-writers of this is Irish. Nicky Byrne had not get through the

semifinals. When you see some of the songs that did get through, you will

howl at the moon at the injustice of it all.

Gabriela Guncikova, Czech Republic. She did a great job, but nobody has

ever won performing in the second position. Off to the Netherlands,

that man is Douwe Bob, the song is Slow Down, railing against modern

life and how frenetic it is. In the middle of the song, he did not just

slow down, he stops for ten seconds. It is quite lengthy. He is

apparently putting 1000 euros on himself to win. I hope he does not

need the money for tattooed laser removal later in life, because I

think he has lost. It is quite a nice song, though, a country and

This is Freddie from Hungary, performing Pioneer. You must not

worry about him. If he does not do well to night, he has always got his

hotel management degree. He may be using it! The staging of this song

is extraordinary. On one side of the stage, you have a Tibet and Monk

drumming. Who knows why? On the other side, three backing singers,

they must have said on their CV they were also backing dancers. They

Song number six is the first of the big five to perform. That is Italy.

The big five are the countries that make the biggest financial

contribution to Eurovision, so they didn't have to take part in the

semifinals along with Sweden, who won last year. The others are Spain,

Germany, France and of course ourselves in the United Kingdom.

Italy has been represented by Francesca Michielin and the song is

No Degree Of Separation. It's already been a big hit in Italy, a

number one and certified gold. It is a very good song, but the staging,

well, it's incomprehensible. It's something to do with the Tree

of Life and a seed and no separation between us. I did read a press

release but I didn't understand. This is song six for Italy.

Stars. It's one of the better ballads in the show tonight. It's

very popular with the Eurovision fans. He's comes with a mighty hoop.

Sometimes his hoop lights up, sometimes it doesn't. It's

temperamental like that. Let's see how it is tonight. Hovi Star, Made

indoor fireworks and that amount of hair spray - never a good idea. But

his hoop lit up, that's the main thing.

Song eight is really terrific. I think it will do very well. Her name

is Poli Genova and the song is If Love Was A Crime, representing

Bulgaria. When I say this next performance contains flashing images

and strobe effects, it really does. Some of them are on her. She might

have been in a Bulgarian version Dragon's Den. She's invested in some

lovely light-up knee pads, handy for gardening at night I imagine. I

don't know what she gets up to. It's a really catchy pop song.

Song eight, enjoy. ( # Like the stars

on the summer night top five I'd say. Tonight's

Eurovision is a bitter sweet one for many of us. It's the first contest

since the death of Sir Terry Wogan. Eight years ago when I got this job,

Sir Terry graciously phoned me. The only advice he had for me was -

don't have a drink before song nine. Well, this is song nine. It's Frans

representing Sweden with a song called If I Were Sorry. While the

crowd here cheer on their home boy, I would urge you, back in the UK at

home, to raise a cup, a mug, a glass, whatever you have in front of

you and give thanks for the man who was and always will be the voice of

Eurovision Sir Terry Wogan. Sir Terry, this is song nine.

Frans is only 17, he has been hanging out with Joe and Jake all

week. That is the song that has been stuck in my head all day. Will we be

coming back to Sweden next year? Who knows.

What can we say, thank you so much to our very own Frans. Yes, thank

you to Frans. We are here in beautiful Stockholm. That is all

because of one man. Thanks! The founder of our city! It was back in

1252, and maybe he is looking back at us now, wishing to see the song

from Germany. Guess what, it is your lucky day. The stage is ready for

Jamie-Lee from Germany. Yes, another of the big five,

Germany. Jamie-Lee is performing a song called Ghost. Maybe I am old

and grumpy, but there is not a thing about her that does not annoy me.

They had a very lengthy meeting about costume and set design, and

daylight every single idea they had. I am sure the people at home would

love this, lasers coming from trees, the moon, it has got things on her

Jamie-Lee, making York seem great. Now, this is a man called Amir, J'ai

cherche, France. It had been the bookies favourite, he is an

engaging, charismatic performer, and one of the catchiest songs in the

competition. It is a lovely song, he does a great job of it. Again, don't

worry about him, because he is in fact a trained dentist.

Lots of love he for Amir, with J'ai cherche. But that may not translate

into votes, not everybody is a die-hard like the people here

She says that like it's a good thing (! ) They are so crazy about

stadiums and Eurovision here, there is a stadium next door with 10,000

people in it. You are watching the Eurovision Song Contest 2016. So are

over 50 other countries. Right now there are Eurovision parties all

around the world and one is happening in the enormous arena next

to us. Mans has run over there to check it out. I decided not to

Hey, one of the things we love about Eurovision is the fact that it

defies logic, so let's not try to explain it.

Australia are now in Eurovision. Not just in it, they're In It To Win

It. This is one of the bookies' favourites. Her name is Dami Im and

she's performing a really great pop song called Sound Of Silence.

Without doubt one of the best vocals in the competition tonight. She was

born in South Korea but emigrated to Australia with her family at the age

of nine. She won Australia X Factor in 2013. I don't know what's in the

big box, that she's sitting on, possibly just her way home, I'm not

sure. Song 13, it could be a winner,

Minus One. Frankly Minus five might be better. The song is called Alter

Ego. The next performance contains extreme flashing images and

strobing. It's a big, rocky, noisy number. It's the sort of song that

doesn't appeal, I think, so much to the Eurovision fans in the arena,

but possibly to people watching across Europe, they will like this.

A date Eurovision ballad, the crowd seemed to like it.

name is Donny Montell, he came 14th in 2012. He wore a blindfold. This

year, he is singing a song called I've Been Waiting for This Night. He

is a really good performer, it is a very catchy pop song. Bless him, he

has brought with him from Lithuania a mini trampoline. See if you can

Jake are song 25. This lady is hugging trees. Her name is Nina

Kraljic, for Croatia, with a song called Lighthouse. The backing

singers might be in a witness protection programme. I also feel

she may have lost some weight since she bought this dress.

Song 17, Croatia. We love you guys!

Now time for the actual bookies' favourite. Song 18, for Russia, this

is Sergey Lazarev, You Are The Only One. He has been on a charm

offensive to get rid of some of the negative reaction which often

happens for Russia in the hall. He has spoken out against the

homophobic laws in Russia, talked about Ukraine, and he has a bakery

making cakes for dogs called Poodle Strudel. It looks like Mans' staging

from last year, but he takes it up a notch. The song is fine, but the

staging is extraordinary. It could be a winner.

move on to Malta now. They failed to qualify last year, but now they're

back. This is another artist who's already been in the contest, 2002.

She came second. She was only 12 points from winning the competition.

Her name is Ira Losco and the song is called Walk On Water. I can tell

you, this isn't a secret, I didn't overhear it in a lift or anything,

she is five months, no I don't know how many months pregnant she is.

That's a lie. I don't know that! But she is pregnant and it's a little

boy. Maternity wear is different in Malta, that's all I'm saying.

Wow. Glad the water didn't break through that song. Those weren't the

waters she was working on. Not sure whether that was the father lurking.

But they're gone now. This is Georgia. They've appeared in the

final six times. This year they're represented by Nika Kocharov and

Young Georgian Lolitaz. The song is Midnight Gold. I have to warn you

that the next performance contains extreme and prolonged flashing

images and strobing. You've never seen anything like this. It's a wall

of noise. It's not for me, to be honest, I don't think it's going to

go down very well here, but in lots of countries, they may like this.

There's nothing else like it in the competition apart from Cyprus.

Eurovision Song Contest has crowned 60 winners. Actually 63 if you count

1969 when four countries split the win. Please don't interrupt me

interesting to look at all these winners and see if one can find a

common thread. Is there a formula? Me and Mans decided to look deeper

into this and sent all the 60... 3! Winners to a lab in Switzerland

where some of the brightest minds in modern science wrote the songedz

into -- songs into molecules and pieced them back together again. We

finally got the result. This, ladies and gentleman, is the ultimate

Eurovision winner. All the components from previous success is

melted down into one perfect Eurovision smash. It's time for us

to present the results. If you want to win the Eurovision Song Contest

we suggest that you listen and learn. This is so ambitious and

funny. Fans will love it. A powerful, majestic start, maybe a

battle horn of some kind. Step two, drums. There has to be drums. It

doesn't hurt if the drums are played by gorgeous, topless men. It's

proven very efficient throughout the years. But please feel free to try

other alternatives. It's proven helpful to go the exact opposite

way, use a grandmother. Step three, show the viewers your country's

ethnic background by using an old, traditional folklore instrument that

no-one's heard of before. No, no, in this case, it's proven much more

efficient to not use a young model. Go with an old man instead. A beard

helps. This is a Swedish instrument, a small piece from the horn family

inherited from the Vikings. Just make something up. No-one will know.

Step four, in Eurovision nothing says winner like a violin. Trust us,

bring a violin. That is the actual Alexander Vybeck. Guess he wasn't

busy. The violin, drums can make it feel old fashioned but this can be

fixed by adding a DJ who pretends to scratch. In real life, this is 30

years old, but in Eurovision it will give your number a contemporary

feel. Costumes - look memorable. Something that the viewers will

notice. Perfect! Step seven, the song. Everything else might -- the

song is essential. Love works. Peace is also a popular way to go. Peace

is good. ABBA won the competition with a song about war, Waterloo, but

this is not something we recommend. Now, when you have everything you

need go for it and don't look back. # Let the song begin with passion

job. I'm in awe of these two, Petra and Mans. To do all that, now

they've got to talk. That's how it's supposed to be done according to the

everything. Of course. But talking of experts, I'd like to introduce a

achievement since inventing the cheese slicer. If you ask any Swede,

which is the greatest Eurovision nation in the world? He would

answer, without hesitation, Ireland. Because he knows that. Swedes are

obsessed with the Eurovision. You can see it everywhere, from the only

tear drops ear drops to the every way that I can soup. We're

absolutely bonkers for that stuff. To bratwurst. You can see it in

religion, culture, astron my, even in education. Right now the most

popular school in Sweden is the Dana international school, where they

incorporate the Eurovision Song Contest in all subjects. From

language studies. Douze points. To mathematics. If Norway gives Sweden

ten points and the remaining 41 countries give Sweden 12 points

each, how many points will Sweden have? Eurovision is so popular some

Swedish computer hackers have even hacked their own computers so that
