Europe, the Lib Dems were the only party of 'in'. Now on BBC News all | :00:00. | :00:00.
the latest business news live from Singapore. As the search and rescue | :00:00. | :00:22.
mission enters its third day, we take a closer look at the company | :00:23. | :00:27.
behind the missing aircraft. And how one man is making money from | :00:28. | :00:35.
specialist farming in India. Welcome to Asia Business Report. As we have | :00:36. | :00:42.
been reporting, the search for the missing Malaysia airlines flight | :00:43. | :00:49.
MH370, with 239 people on board, is now in its third day. The teams | :00:50. | :00:54.
searching for the aircraft have spotted some debris in the sea south | :00:55. | :01:03.
of Vietnam's. All possible causes are being considered. Here is what | :01:04. | :01:08.
we know. The flight was en route to Beijing from Kuala Lumpur. More than | :01:09. | :01:12.
two thirds of the passengers on board were Chinese nationals. | :01:13. | :01:17.
Multiple countries are now involved in the search for any sign of | :01:18. | :01:19.
wreckage. Malaysia airlines is one of the oldest carriers in Asia and | :01:20. | :01:25.
the disappearance has cast a spotlight on the company. The | :01:26. | :01:28.
company's stock price has fallen by as much as 80% at the open of trade | :01:29. | :01:35.
in Kuala Lumpur. Earlier I spoke with an aviation specialist asking | :01:36. | :01:41.
if it was possible the plane had been poorly maintained. I don't | :01:42. | :01:46.
think so. It has a very good record with regards to flight safety. It | :01:47. | :01:52.
has an excellent maintenance crew. It has nothing to do with | :01:53. | :01:54.
maintenance I believe. A possibility, but fairly slim. A few | :01:55. | :02:00.
years ago there was a possible merger between Malaysia airlines and | :02:01. | :02:10.
air Asia for 20% of each of their shareholdings. Why did it not | :02:11. | :02:21.
materialise? If there was an Air Asia agreement, could this have | :02:22. | :02:26.
changed things? I don't think so. The talks went quite deep but both | :02:27. | :02:31.
airlines realised it would not have been a good fit. Would it have | :02:32. | :02:39.
helped? Debatable. The well-run. Malaysia Airlines is trying to | :02:40. | :02:44.
turned the corner, so I think it is all speculation. With both airlines | :02:45. | :02:50.
losing money, what is the likely future? They have to find a way to | :02:51. | :02:55.
restructure the airline and turn it around in the right direction. | :02:56. | :02:58.
Really this incident isn't going to help much. In other business News, | :02:59. | :03:09.
Japan's current account deficit widens to over $15 billion. The | :03:10. | :03:15.
largest since records began in 1985. In further bad news, the country's | :03:16. | :03:19.
economic growth figures were revised downwards. The economy there | :03:20. | :03:28.
expanded by less than 1% in 2013. Data from China has shown a big fall | :03:29. | :03:36.
in exports. More than 18% in February compared to one year and | :03:37. | :03:40.
go. Expectations were for an increase of 7%. The surprise drop in | :03:41. | :03:52.
export comes just days after China's spokesman said the target would | :03:53. | :03:57.
remain at 7.5%. More than 1000 workers were on strike at a factory | :03:58. | :04:05.
in the south-east of Shenzhen. They are demanding more money. Or a | :04:06. | :04:17.
bigger payoff if they choose not to join the mainland technology firm. | :04:18. | :04:22.
Earlier I spoke with a spokesman from the China Labour will listen. I | :04:23. | :04:28.
asked what this says about labour conditions on the mainland. I think | :04:29. | :04:35.
it is a prominent example of what we have seen for the last few years. | :04:36. | :04:40.
With the decline in the transformation of China's | :04:41. | :04:42.
manufacturing sector, a lot of factories are being closed down. | :04:43. | :04:47.
Many are merging. Factories are being taken over. This causes lot of | :04:48. | :04:51.
disquiet and discomfort among the workforce. They are unsure of their | :04:52. | :04:57.
job security. Also of their pay and working conditions. So this is the | :04:58. | :05:02.
only way they can express their grievances. Is this a rising trend | :05:03. | :05:13.
of rising strikes in multinational companies? We have seen industrial | :05:14. | :05:16.
action is taking place over the past year, particularly in big companies | :05:17. | :05:22.
such as phone making company Nokia. We have Pepsi, the multinational | :05:23. | :05:30.
firm. I think they are all part of the mix, but we have seen a rise in | :05:31. | :05:35.
industrial action over the past five years, not just in the manufacturing | :05:36. | :05:39.
in China. Also in services, construction workers, sanitation | :05:40. | :05:46.
workers, teachers, it is a pretty broad-based movement at the moment. | :05:47. | :05:52.
How do you turn around a company that has a 200 year history and more | :05:53. | :05:59.
than 150 thousand staff? That mission was taken on by this man. He | :06:00. | :06:05.
became chief executive when the German steelmaking group was making | :06:06. | :06:10.
vast losses. He explained how he turned the struggling company | :06:11. | :06:17.
around. We have a lot of managers. But I did explain that there is a | :06:18. | :06:21.
big difference between being a manager and being a leader. The | :06:22. | :06:26.
difference is that the leader knows where he wants to go as an | :06:27. | :06:29.
individual, but also within a team and the company. If you have not | :06:30. | :06:34.
decided for yourself or for the company what you are aiming for, | :06:35. | :06:39.
then you cannot lead. How do you qualify what is important? What is | :06:40. | :06:44.
not important? So without a clear direction for the future, you cannot | :06:45. | :06:48.
be a leader. This was a new way of thinking. It also means you need to | :06:49. | :06:52.
spend more time thinking about what should be in the future, instead of | :06:53. | :07:00.
just working day today. This was a new experience. Meanwhile, I think | :07:01. | :07:06.
they like it. It gives you much more freedom. It is ultimately more | :07:07. | :07:11.
challenging, but it is much more interesting than executing all your | :07:12. | :07:15.
daily tasks. Can you give us examples of success where you're | :07:16. | :07:18.
restructuring has worked? First of all, it is a complete new style of | :07:19. | :07:24.
management. Our heritage was very hierarchal. That means you lose | :07:25. | :07:34.
information and are slow. Many expats enjoy living overseas, that | :07:35. | :07:38.
there is always a yearning for home. Maybe it is for authentic kimchi, or | :07:39. | :07:51.
American chocolate. This man decided to set up his own farm. It is now | :07:52. | :07:58.
flourishing. More from Delhi on the expat economy. Breeding animals for | :07:59. | :08:04.
food is a pretty extreme way to make sure that what ends up on your | :08:05. | :08:07.
dinner plate is up to the standard you want. But that is exactly what | :08:08. | :08:16.
this farm was started four. Almost two decades ago. Located just a few | :08:17. | :08:21.
kilometres outside of Delhi, it has become one of the top sources of | :08:22. | :08:29.
gourmet food for expats in the Indian capital. The farm not only | :08:30. | :08:38.
has many ducks, poultry, and pigs, but organic vegetables as well. The | :08:39. | :08:46.
market has grown a lot. There are a lot of farmers. The people | :08:47. | :08:49.
understand they have to pay a price to get the real, legitimate taste. | :08:50. | :08:58.
Whether it is the fowls or the perfect turkey for roast, or even | :08:59. | :09:04.
fresh trout for dinner, small farms like this one cater to the Top End | :09:05. | :09:07.
of the market. It has not come cheap. Dickens in a regular Delhi | :09:08. | :09:14.
market would cost about $2 a kilogram. From free range markets | :09:15. | :09:20.
like this one it could cost three or four times that price -- chickens. | :09:21. | :09:27.
They specialise in global foods. Launched as a small gourmet | :09:28. | :09:35.
delicatessen, it is now nearly $150 million business. Selling imported | :09:36. | :09:44.
food is not easy. We face a lot of challenges because of the new laws. | :09:45. | :09:52.
The importers are scared. As a consequence, most of our cheese and | :09:53. | :10:00.
meet counters are running dry. -- meat. Demand for produce is not | :10:01. | :10:09.
restricted to foreigners. More and more urban Indians aspire to world | :10:10. | :10:14.
cuisines and food they think of as high quality. Expect to see more | :10:15. | :10:18.
specialist farms like this up and running. Asian stock markets are | :10:19. | :10:25.
falling in Monday trade. A disappointing result. Uncertainty in | :10:26. | :10:32.
the Ukraine. Thank you so much for in this thing your time with us. | :10:33. | :10:35.
