cabinet minister Tony Benn has died. You have changed the constitution of

:00:10.:00:18.

this country by your own power. An MP for more than 50 years and

:00:19.:00:21.

tireless campaigner for socialism, he is remembered across the

:00:22.:00:28.

political divide. Tony Benn, you always knew what he stood for and

:00:29.:00:33.

who he stood up for, which is why he was admired across the political

:00:34.:00:39.

spectrum. The country has lost a great campaigner and writer, and

:00:40.:00:43.

someone whose words will be followed keenly for many years to come, so a

:00:44.:00:46.

sad day for British politics. We'll look back at the life of a man

:00:47.:00:50.

whose passion for his often divisive brand of politics remained undimmed

:00:51.:00:52.

to the end. Also tonight: Handshake but no deal

:00:53.:00:55.

- talks between Russia and the US fail to find any common ground over

:00:56.:00:57.

Ukraine. The shocking image of Oscar

:00:58.:01:00.

Pistorius splattered with his girlfriend's blood shown at his

:01:01.:01:05.

trial for her murder. An automatic signal from the missing

:01:06.:01:07.

Malaysian airliner suggests it flew on for five hours after air traffic

:01:08.:01:14.

control lost contact with it. Lord Windermere has lifted the Gold

:01:15.:01:17.

Cup. A rank outsider becomes the toast of

:01:18.:01:18.

Cheltenham. In Sportsday, Nicolas Anelka shocks

:01:19.:01:26.

West Brom by announcing he's leaving. The club dispute this and

:01:27.:01:31.

expect their verdict on his quennelle gesture next week.

:01:32.:01:53.

Good evening. Tony Benn, the leading voice of the

:01:54.:01:58.

radical left in British politics for more than 50 years, has died. He was

:01:59.:02:03.

88. There have been tributes from across the political spectrum today

:02:04.:02:05.

for the former Labour cabinet minister. He has been hailed by his

:02:06.:02:09.

supporters as a fearless fighter for what he believed in, irrespective of

:02:10.:02:12.

whether it was popular. Even his opponents have praised him as

:02:13.:02:15.

magnificent campaigner and orator. His family said simply that they

:02:16.:02:19.

were comforted by the memory of his long, full and inspiring life.

:02:20.:02:22.

Here's our political editor, Nick Robinson.

:02:23.:02:30.

We will not accept the cuts that they are trying to make. No protest,

:02:31.:02:40.

no demo, no march was quite complete without Tony Benn. He joked that age

:02:41.:02:46.

had transformed him into a national treasure, where once the power of

:02:47.:02:51.

his rhetoric had led to him being proclaimed the most dangerous man in

:02:52.:02:56.

Britain. Transfer all of the powers back from a common market commission

:02:57.:03:00.

to the House of Commons also within a matter of weeks. People, he said,

:03:01.:03:06.

only started being nice to him when he became harmless. There were

:03:07.:03:10.

people who agreed and disagreed with him even within my own party, but

:03:11.:03:15.

people at my the sense of conviction and integrity that shone through

:03:16.:03:19.

from Tony Benn. Dash-macro people add mired. I disagree with most of

:03:20.:03:25.

what he said that he was or was engaging and interesting and you

:03:26.:03:27.

were never bored when reading or listening to him, and the country

:03:28.:03:31.

has lost a great campaigner and writer. Anthony Wedgwood Benn was

:03:32.:03:37.

born into the establishment. The modern face of the Labour Party in

:03:38.:03:42.

the 1960s was the sum of a Viscount, who had to fight in the courts to

:03:43.:03:46.

announce his title so he could run for election and become plain Tony

:03:47.:03:53.

Benn MP. You have defeated the courts and changed the concert

:03:54.:03:56.

Jewish and of this country by your own power. Benn was not always a

:03:57.:04:01.

radical. As a minister in the 1970s, he unveiled Concorde as a symbol of

:04:02.:04:05.

the new high-tech Britain which Labour promised to create. But he

:04:06.:04:12.

concluded that he and his party had failed to change society because of

:04:13.:04:16.

all the policies which he claimed Labour's leadership had simply

:04:17.:04:21.

refused to implement. Reflation of public sector spending, ruled out.

:04:22.:04:25.

Substantial cut in arms expenditure, ruled out. The immediate

:04:26.:04:34.

intervention of... Anti-Europe, antinuclear weapons,

:04:35.:04:36.

pro-nationalisation, he won the argument but failed, just, in a bid

:04:37.:04:43.

to become Labour's deputy leader. Tony Benn, 49.574. Denis Healey,

:04:44.:04:56.

50.426. Labour soon split. Some on the right left to form a new party.

:04:57.:05:00.

Those who stayed, like Denis Healey, will never forget the legacy of

:05:01.:05:06.

division. There was quite a lot of bitterness, really, because I felt

:05:07.:05:11.

he was doing the party enormous damage, and I'm sure he was at that

:05:12.:05:15.

time, by the way he behaved, not just his views. But, as I say, all

:05:16.:05:24.

that disappeared in later life. Michael Foot led Labour to its worst

:05:25.:05:29.

ever election defeat, on a manifesto mocked as the longest suicide note

:05:30.:05:34.

in history. The left lane and the splitters, the Right blamed Benn. He

:05:35.:05:40.

was prophetic in the way that he spoke, seeing the great vision, but

:05:41.:05:44.

it belonged to the past, essentially. For such a modern

:05:45.:05:49.

minded man, technically, he was quite old-fashioned, politically. He

:05:50.:05:54.

longed for society that had gone. The tide of ideas was not with him

:05:55.:05:58.

but in Parliament he continued the fight. The Humphrey Applebys of

:05:59.:06:03.

every country in Europe have got together and they say, you can't do

:06:04.:06:07.

this, Minister, because we have agreed with the Dutch that if they

:06:08.:06:10.

do this the Belgians won't object to what the Italians have said to the

:06:11.:06:14.

people. So the Minister has no power anyway. Benn, one of the generation

:06:15.:06:21.

of politicians who fought in the war, chose to leave the Commons to

:06:22.:06:26.

fight for his ideas, joking that he could now spend more time on

:06:27.:06:29.

politics, where it matters, beyond Westminster. If there is anybody

:06:30.:06:36.

here from new Labour, your money will be re-funded if you leave

:06:37.:06:45.

quietly. And through all of this, he kept a diary, and unmatched

:06:46.:06:51.

chronicle of post-war British politics and his philosophy. The

:06:52.:06:55.

real division in society is between the people who create wealth by

:06:56.:06:59.

working, and those who own the wealth. And those who own the wealth

:07:00.:07:03.

have far too much power, and they use it to control those who create

:07:04.:07:09.

the wealth. After the last of eight volumes was published, he spoke

:07:10.:07:15.

about life and death. At my age, you do ask yourself how long you have

:07:16.:07:18.

got and what it will be like when you die. And my wife said she

:07:19.:07:23.

thought death was a great adventure. She was dying of cancer for five

:07:24.:07:27.

years, and her courage when she knew her time was up was very great and

:07:28.:07:33.

impressed me very much. And so I learned from her how to die, and I

:07:34.:07:38.

have thought a lot about it. But I'm not afraid of dying at all. Tony

:07:39.:07:45.

Benn, who died this morning. And Huw Edwards has a special

:07:46.:07:48.

programme on Tony Benn's life later tonight - Tony Benn, Labour's Lost

:07:49.:07:53.

Leader, on BBC Two at 11.10pm. A day of talks between Russia and

:07:54.:07:57.

the US in London ended with Russia's Foreign Minister saying the two

:07:58.:08:00.

countries have no common vision over the crisis in Ukraine. Sergei Lavrov

:08:01.:08:03.

insisted there's no plan to invade the country, despite a build up of

:08:04.:08:06.

Russian troops on the eastern border. US Secretary of State, John

:08:07.:08:09.

Kerry, said America will not recognise Sunday's referendum in

:08:10.:08:11.

Crimea over whether the region should remain in Ukraine. Our

:08:12.:08:15.

diplomatic correspondent Bridget Kendall has more.

:08:16.:08:26.

An intensive six hours of talks in the sunshine at the US ambassador's

:08:27.:08:31.

London garden. At stake, the future of relations between the West and

:08:32.:08:36.

Russia. But at the end of it, no narrowing of the gap over Ukraine's

:08:37.:08:42.

future. The urgency is the referendum planned for Sunday in

:08:43.:08:45.

Crimea, which means the region could either break away from Ukraine, or

:08:46.:08:50.

even opt to join Russia, which Kiev and the West say would be illegal

:08:51.:08:53.

and a violation of Ukraine's sovereignty. With preparations

:08:54.:08:59.

underway, there seems little chance of calling it off. But John Kerry

:09:00.:09:05.

flew to London for one last try, and to warn his Russian counterpart that

:09:06.:09:09.

if Crimea is effectively annexed by Russia, there will be grave

:09:10.:09:14.

consequences. We believe that a decision to move forward I Russia,

:09:15.:09:20.

to ratify that vote sufficiently would in fact be a back door

:09:21.:09:24.

annexation of Crimea, and that it would be against international law.

:09:25.:09:31.

But Mr Lavrov said disagreements remained, and he indicated that if

:09:32.:09:34.

Crimea votes to join Russia, Moscow will not stand in its way. Can you

:09:35.:09:42.

be clear, Mr Lavrov. After Sunday's referendum, do you expect Crimea to

:09:43.:09:46.

become independent, or to become part of the Russian Federation?

:09:47.:09:53.

TRANSLATION: As for the referee -- the referendum on Sunday, I and

:09:54.:09:57.

President Putin have said we will respect the choice of the Crimean

:09:58.:10:00.

people and we will make our position clear once the outcome is known. It

:10:01.:10:05.

is clear these last-ditch talks have got nowhere and there is nothing the

:10:06.:10:08.

West can do if the Russian speakers of Crimea want to break away from

:10:09.:10:14.

Ukraine and join Russia. And the stage is set for new Western

:10:15.:10:17.

sanctions against Russia next week and a deterioration further in East

:10:18.:10:21.

-West relations, with who knows what consequences. And immediately, a

:10:22.:10:27.

further worry, the violence that exploded in eastern Ukraine last

:10:28.:10:31.

night. Mr Lavrov today said that Russia had no plans to intervene,

:10:32.:10:36.

but his Foreign Ministry warned that Russia reserves the right to protect

:10:37.:10:39.

its compatriots, a worrying hint of possible things to come.

:10:40.:10:42.

Our World Affairs Editor, John Simpson, is in Simferopol. The

:10:43.:10:46.

Russian Foreign Minister was not giving much away at talks in London

:10:47.:10:49.

today, but attention will be focused on the referendum in Crimea on

:10:50.:10:59.

Sunday and Russia's response to it. Absolutely. I don't think there is

:11:00.:11:05.

any doubt what the result is going to be. I don't know whether you can

:11:06.:11:10.

see this, but this is essentially the ballot paper, a version of it,

:11:11.:11:15.

which has been put out. You can get it in public buildings. There are

:11:16.:11:20.

just two questions. One, do you want to be part of Russia, and a waffly

:11:21.:11:25.

question saying, do you want to go back to the 1992 arrangements where

:11:26.:11:29.

Ukraine and Crimea were part of the same thing? There is no question of

:11:30.:11:36.

saying, I just want to stay in Ukraine. And I don't think there is

:11:37.:11:40.

any doubt about the answer. And I am sure that Western countries have

:11:41.:11:45.

realised this, and they are not really focusing on Crimea now at

:11:46.:11:49.

all. They are assuming, whatever they say, they are assuming that the

:11:50.:11:53.

real danger is, will Russia move into East Ukraine. The trouble in

:11:54.:12:01.

some cities there has shown they could well have a pretext for doing

:12:02.:12:06.

so. And rather ominously, the Russian government has taken to

:12:07.:12:10.

saying it reserves the right to defend the lives of Russian

:12:11.:12:15.

citizens. Well, that is precisely what they said just before they

:12:16.:12:21.

moved into Crimea. I think, Fiona, we are in for a pretty dangerous

:12:22.:12:25.

couple of weeks now. Thank you. It's emerged that a Conservative

:12:26.:12:28.

peer killed in a helicopter crash in Norfolk last night had started legal

:12:29.:12:31.

proceedings against the manufacturer of the aircraft. Lord Ballyedmond

:12:32.:12:35.

was one of four people who died when the helicopter came down in deep

:12:36.:12:39.

fog. He was suing AgustaWestland, claiming his helicopter had

:12:40.:12:41.

technical defects. Sian Lloyd reports. In a field, only 500 yards

:12:42.:12:52.

interest from where it took off, the remains of AugustaWestland

:12:53.:12:58.

helicopter. It crashed just after 7. 30pm last night in fog. James

:12:59.:13:04.

Tattle, who works nearby, saw the aircraft moments before it crashed.

:13:05.:13:07.

The helicopter came over the back here. It was pitching, like at a 45

:13:08.:13:13.

degree angle. I thought he was in trouble. I thought he was coming

:13:14.:13:17.

down lower because of the weather atmosphere. We had been doing our

:13:18.:13:25.

work and it just went out of sight. On board was 70-year-old, Lord

:13:26.:13:31.

Ballyedmond, a multimillionaire entrepreneur who founded a

:13:32.:13:34.

pharmaceutical company and had been a politician in the Irish

:13:35.:13:37.

Parliament. Tributes have been paid to the Conservative peer. He started

:13:38.:13:42.

off basically with nothing. He built a huge business. He became the

:13:43.:13:49.

richest man in Northern Ireland. The salaries he paid his employees put

:13:50.:13:54.

?50 million per annum into the Northern Ireland economy. The

:13:55.:14:00.

helicopter was a common site at Lord Ballyedmond's estate, Gillingham

:14:01.:14:02.

Hall. This footage was taken last week. The peer had raised concerns

:14:03.:14:06.

about possible defects with the helicopter. The manufacturer,

:14:07.:14:11.

AugustaWestland, said it couldn't comment, due to the ongoing

:14:12.:14:14.

investigation. But it did say there could be many possible causes

:14:15.:14:18.

including tech nubbal and human error.

:14:19.:14:23.

-- technical. It is not known yet if the weather played a part. When

:14:24.:14:27.

emergency services arrived last night, visibility was poor. And

:14:28.:14:31.

police have been at the site all day, preserving the crash scene

:14:32.:14:35.

while air accident investigators carried out their work. They'll be

:14:36.:14:41.

looking at what caused this crash. An experienced pilot, who lives

:14:42.:14:45.

nearby, said he was surprised that it had been flying. There are

:14:46.:14:51.

visibility criteria when taking off and landing. If the fog was as bad

:14:52.:14:57.

as it was in Beckles at the time, I was surprised he would take off in

:14:58.:15:00.

something like that. The bodous of the four men have now been removed.

:15:01.:15:04.

-- the bodies. Two pilots and a member of o Lord Ballyedmond's staff

:15:05.:15:10.

were also on board. The job of looking for evidence at the scene

:15:11.:15:11.

goes on. A week after the Malaysian Airlines

:15:12.:15:22.

777 airliner went missing, it's emerged that it could have flown on

:15:23.:15:25.

for up to five hours after air traffic controllers lost contact

:15:26.:15:28.

with it. 13 countries are now engaged in the ever-widening search.

:15:29.:15:31.

It disappeared over the South China Sea shortly after it left Kuala

:15:32.:15:36.

Lumpur, en route to Beijing. Now there's a suggestion the plane may

:15:37.:15:38.

have been deliberately flown across the Malay Peninsula towards the

:15:39.:15:43.

Andaman Islands in the Indian Ocean. The search area has now been

:15:44.:15:46.

extended to cover 27,000 square nautical miles. 57 ships and 48

:15:47.:15:52.

aircraft are searching the Indian Ocean, the South China Sea and the

:15:53.:15:56.

Malacca Straits. Rupert Wingfield-Hayes reports from

:15:57.:16:05.

Malaysia. In Beijing today the hostility towards Malaysia Airlines

:16:06.:16:09.

officious was palpable. One of the most important things that Malaysia

:16:10.:16:13.

Airlines has been doing throughout this event is not speculating. But

:16:14.:16:17.

no-one here is satisfied with that explanation. How can their loved

:16:18.:16:22.

ones have simply disappeared? It is incomprehensible. Trans Sonic We are

:16:23.:16:33.

very disappoint -- Translation. We are very disappointed with the

:16:34.:16:39.

Malaysian Government. Until we get accurate information, we'll continue

:16:40.:16:42.

making wild guesses. Astonishingly, a week on, there is still no trace

:16:43.:16:48.

of Flight MH 370. But today, the BBC learned that the

:16:49.:16:53.

plane continued sending out a signal via satellite for five hours after

:16:54.:16:59.

rude oar contact was lost. -- radar. In the last 24 hours we have seen a

:17:00.:17:03.

significant shift of resources of ships and aircraft from the original

:17:04.:17:07.

search area in the gulf of Thailand, on the far side of the Malay

:17:08.:17:11.

Peninsula, over to here, to the straight of malaka and even far out

:17:12.:17:17.

into the Indian Ocean. The latest to join this shift has been the US

:17:18.:17:22.

Navy, which is sending one of its destroyers up here today. What we

:17:23.:17:25.

don't know, what still remains very unclear is why. Cap particular Nick

:17:26.:17:32.

Huzlun was a Malaysian Airlines pilot for 35 years and is a personal

:17:33.:17:36.

friend of the missing plane's captain. If it seems possible it

:17:37.:17:43.

turned around and flew back over the peninsula and out into the Indian

:17:44.:17:47.

Ocean, what scenario are we talking about now? It keeps on flying for a

:17:48.:17:55.

certain period of time while the communications system is not

:17:56.:17:58.

functioning, whether it is disabled or not, we do not know, but not

:17:59.:18:02.

functioning, it rauss a flag. Everything is working. -- it raises

:18:03.:18:07.

a flag. The aeroplane is working well, flying under control - why are

:18:08.:18:11.

you not talking to me? Why are you not talking to me? There is a loud

:18:12.:18:16.

whisper is talking in my ears about human intervention. Malaysia's Prime

:18:17.:18:20.

Minister joined prayers for the missing today. But many here now

:18:21.:18:24.

think his government knows much more about the fate of flight MH 370 than

:18:25.:18:28.

it is letting on. In March 2011, a demonstration began

:18:29.:18:40.

in the southern Syrian town of Deraa against the government of President

:18:41.:18:44.

Assad. It sparked a civil war that three years on is still raging.

:18:45.:18:46.

Since the conflict began, an estimated 140,000 people have died.

:18:47.:18:51.

6.5 million people have been displaced from their homes within

:18:52.:18:54.

Syria and 2.5 million have fled the country. Increasingly, the various

:18:55.:19:00.

groups opposing President Assad are fighting amongst themselves. The

:19:01.:19:05.

Kurds in the north-east clash daily with Islamist and other rebel

:19:06.:19:09.

groups. Jim Muir gained rare access to the region, near the town of

:19:10.:19:12.

Kamishli and sent this report At the trial of Oscar Pistorius,

:19:13.:19:16.

Killed by a suicide bomber. Another fighter is given an

:19:17.:19:30.

emotional funeral. He is among more than 500 from the Syrian Kurdish

:19:31.:19:35.

militia who have dude in the struggle with Islamic extremists,

:19:36.:19:39.

not the Assad regime. This part of Syria is controlled by the Kurds. We

:19:40.:19:43.

had a rare glimpse of women fighters who make up part of the Kurdish

:19:44.:19:46.

force. The family of the man who died,

:19:47.:19:51.

blamed foreign Jihadis and those who send them. "You cold-blooded

:19:52.:19:58.

British, you are sending us all the scum of Britain, the scum of Europe

:19:59.:20:03.

and all in the name of Islam. They grow their beds but they have

:20:04.:20:09.

nothing to do with Islam." This group, even more extreme than

:20:10.:20:14.

Al-Qaeda, are on the offensive here. This mosque was virtually demolished

:20:15.:20:19.

what enthey attacked this village recently. It belonged to a sector of

:20:20.:20:24.

Islam they don't like. This was not some random damage here. This was

:20:25.:20:28.

wholesale and systematic destruction of the mosque. There is virtually

:20:29.:20:34.

nothing left. They even burned a pile of Korans, for most Muslims,

:20:35.:20:38.

the ultimate insult. The Kurds are now back in control of that village,

:20:39.:20:42.

but it is still deserted. The group are only a few miles away. This

:20:43.:20:47.

struggle is also about who controls the oil that abounds here. Gangs

:20:48.:20:53.

fight over it at night. By day, home-made mini refineries lake this,

:20:54.:21:00.

pump out pollution. This nearby village was occupied last year by

:21:01.:21:04.

the official Al-Qaeda group in Syria. Kurdish forces drove them

:21:05.:21:09.

out. The villagers say they were glad to see the back of them.

:21:10.:21:18.

No, no, no, when they attacked, the whole village fled. They ruined

:21:19.:21:21.

everything. We certainly don't want them back. If they were here, you

:21:22.:21:25.
