Good afternoon. The chief executive of G4S says he

only learnt his company wouldn't be able to provide thousands of

security guards for the Olympics in the past nine days. Nick Buckles

apologised and said his company would now make a loss of up to �50

million on the contract. Thousands of troops are having to be drafted

in to provide security for the Games. Richard Lister reports. It's

the biggest security operation in Britain since the Second World War.

From today, an air exclusion zone comes into force over London, but

the problem is not in the air, but on ground. With I announcement that

thousands more troops are to be needed to provide security at the

Games has cast doubt on how well organised this aspect of the

Olympics has been. G4S is to pay for redeploying the troops, as well

as a multi-million pound penalty. The chief executive said that they

underestimated the task. The security of the Olympics has

been delivered by a large number of individual elements. We were a part

of the mix. Clearly we cannot deliver on our side of that, we are

very sorry about it. The problem came to light when G4S

failed to provide its share of security personally for the

Aquatics Centre, raising questions about why it has taken so long to

find out about the situation. Last December organisers realised that

they underestimated the number of guards that they needed and more

than doubled the total to 23,700. G4S accepted a bigger contract it

supply 10,000, the military agreed to provide 7,500. Now that G4S has

admitted it cannot provide its share, the military's contribution

has gone up to 11,000. There are questions about the G4S recruitment

process. Applicants criticised it as chaotic, but with the deadline

less than a fortnight away, all involved say that the primary focus

is getting the right security in place.

Did G4S go into denial about their achievements, whether they could

deliver this? I hope that is subject to the rigorous

parliamentary scrutiny, but now we have to focus on with less than two

weeks to go to ensure that the Games are safe and secure.

parliamentary Committees are summoning G4S, the organisers and

two Government departments to account for what went wrong in the

security process. The Government is to announce plans

for the full elektri if Ication of the middleland mainline in

will mean quicker transport links and newer trains. The diesel trains

run the route now, the electric trains will take their place it

will bring Sheffield, nam, Leicester, more into line with the

towns and cities near them with the electricity run lines.

It is not an unexpected announcement. It has been on an

industry wish-list. It will cost about �500 mill. -- million. The

Government will pay some of the money and Network Rail will pay

some as well. There was concern that fare pairs will have to pay

some of this. Fares will go up to above inflation. That is a downside,

but overall this has been welcomed in Sheffield and in other towns and

cities on this route down the spine of England.

UN observers are on their way to a Syrian village which antiGovernment

activists say was the scene of a massacre on Thursday. Some reports

claim that 200 people were killed when troops attacked the town of

Tremseh. It is said that the deaths were caused by armed terrorist

groups. You may find some of the images in this report disturbing.

Off to try to find out what happened at Tremseh. The UN

monitors did a reconassiance yesterday and established that the

weighs is calm. Now they are set to investigate the reports that a

massacre took place. So far, though, activists have not

produced the horrifying images of slaughtered children and women that

circulated after the Pula massacre two months ago. These pictures show

the bodies of about 15 dead young men of fighting age. Initial

reports spoke of over 200 people massacred, but they have not been

named or documented by video. Syrian state TV says that the

security forces killed many armed rebels in Tremseh and destroyed

their stronghold there is. Whatever happened in Tremseh, the

incident has put the Syrian regime under mounting pressure. The US

Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton, talked about deliberate murder. The

UN Special Envoy, Lisa Nandy, described the violence as an

outrageous violation of his peace plan and Ban Ki-Moon said it cast

serious doubts on Bashar al-Assad's commitment to peace.
