Jimmy Savile's family speak out about their turmoil over the | :00:06. | :00:13.
allegations of sexual abuse surrounding him. They offer | :00:13. | :00:16.
sympathy and understanding to his victims and say the revelations | :00:16. | :00:19.
have taken a shattering toll on the family. | :00:19. | :00:22.
Quit smoking by 30 - how women can avoid the risks of dying young from | :00:22. | :00:27.
smoking-related diseases. And, there's been fighting across | :00:27. | :00:30.
Syria as the government and rebels accuse each other of violating the | :00:30. | :00:40.
:00:40. | :00:49. | ||
Good afternoon. Jimmy Savile's nephew has spoken of | :00:49. | :00:51.
his family's turmoil over allegations of sexual abuse | :00:51. | :00:58.
surrounding the late TV presenter and DJ. Roger Foster - who at first | :00:58. | :01:01.
defended his uncle - said the claims had now overwhelmed the | :01:01. | :01:04.
family and made it difficult for them to reconcile their image of a | :01:04. | :01:07.
man who did so much for charity with one who committed, what he | :01:08. | :01:14.
called, indecent criminal acts. This report from Ed Thomas in Goole. | :01:14. | :01:17.
He was the nation's entertainer, now police say he is one of the | :01:17. | :01:23.
country's most prolific sex offenders. I wake up in the morning | :01:23. | :01:28.
and wonder what's going to happen next. After weeks of allegations, | :01:28. | :01:32.
Jimmy Savile's nephew says his family's been left in despair. | :01:32. | :01:37.
Totally devastating, I cannot understand for the life of me how a | :01:37. | :01:43.
guy who did so much good in his life with the work that he did, his | :01:43. | :01:46.
charity work, his Trusts, the people that he helped, could have | :01:46. | :01:54.
such a dark side to him that nobody knew about. Did you ever suspect | :01:54. | :02:01.
your uncle, any doubts, any any sp -- suspicions? None whatsoever. I | :02:01. | :02:05.
still have a part of me proud of him, not proud of the way things | :02:05. | :02:08.
have turned out, but proud of the things that he did, in trying to | :02:08. | :02:14.
help other people. And I am so absolutely devastated and | :02:14. | :02:18.
disappointed that this dark side is the side that he will be remembered | :02:18. | :02:24.
for. I am also devastated and disappointed and very sympathetic | :02:24. | :02:28.
towards the people who have kept this dark secret all of their lives. | :02:28. | :02:32.
Today, there was another sign of the past catching up with Jimmy | :02:32. | :02:35.
Savile. The head of the Roman Catholic Church in England and | :02:35. | :02:41.
Wales is trying to have his Papal knighthood removed. Police have | :02:41. | :02:46.
over 300 potential victims. It's a lot to take in for the family left | :02:46. | :02:55.
behind. We enjoyed life. We did so many good things. Brought so much | :02:55. | :02:59.
happiness to many people and now all of that's gone. Jimmy Savile's | :02:59. | :03:04.
nephew said he felt like he had to speak out on behalf of his family. | :03:04. | :03:08.
He said the repercussions of this scandal were enormous. He also | :03:08. | :03:16.
asked one question - where will it all end? | :03:16. | :03:20.
Women who quit smoking by the age of 30 will almost completely avoid | :03:20. | :03:22.
the risks of dying early from tobacco-related diseases. That's | :03:22. | :03:25.
according to a study in the medical journal the Lancet which studied | :03:25. | :03:29.
more than a million women in the UK. And, as our health correspondent | :03:29. | :03:32.
Branwen Jeffreys reports, it also found that long-term smokers lost | :03:32. | :03:36.
around ten years from their lifespan. | :03:36. | :03:42.
Angela took up smoking at the age of 11, so giving up when she was 28 | :03:43. | :03:47.
was tough. Angela got advice and nicotine substitutes from her local | :03:47. | :03:51.
NHS, but it also took a lot of willpower. Today's research shows | :03:51. | :03:55.
by giving up while she's still young, Angela should live as long | :03:55. | :04:00.
as a non-smoker and she's already feeling healthier. It's amazing. I | :04:00. | :04:06.
can feel it already, actually. It's great just being able to breathe | :04:06. | :04:10.
again. If I have a night out I wake up in the morning before wheezing, | :04:10. | :04:14.
but I I don't have that any more. I have my sense of smell back which | :04:14. | :04:18.
is like a new experience for me, I didn't realise that for all these | :04:19. | :04:22.
years I couldn't really smell anything. | :04:22. | :04:27.
It was in the 1950s and 60s that British women took up smoking in | :04:27. | :04:33.
large numbers. I just wanted to be sophisticated. That was the big | :04:33. | :04:37.
thing when you were about 19 and you have older friends who smoke | :04:37. | :04:41.
heavily. I saw a woman on a bus with long red fingernails, she was | :04:41. | :04:46.
smoking. I said, I was 15, and I wanted to look like her. Now by | :04:46. | :04:49.
following that generation researchers have been able to | :04:49. | :04:53.
measure the impact. Using information from more than a | :04:53. | :04:57.
million women the study in the Lancet compares smokers and non- | :04:57. | :05:01.
smokers. On average, female smokers died ten years earlier than non- | :05:01. | :05:05.
smokers. Stopping smoking by the age of 40 | :05:05. | :05:09.
meant they died just one year before non-smokers. | :05:09. | :05:14.
And stopping by 30 meant almost all of the extra risk was avoided. | :05:14. | :05:17.
More than half of all women who smoke and keep on smoking will get | :05:17. | :05:21.
killed by tobacco but we have also found that if you stop early enough | :05:21. | :05:25.
you will avoid most of that risk. This study shows if you give up | :05:25. | :05:30.
young, you will live longer. But smoking is so damaging there are | :05:30. | :05:35.
other reasons to quit sooner, not later. It prematurely ages skin, | :05:35. | :05:42.
and makes it harder for women to get pregnant. | :05:42. | :05:45.
The Environment Secretary has confirmed that a ban on the import | :05:45. | :05:49.
of ash trees will come into force on Monday. The move comes after the | :05:49. | :05:51.
deadly Chalara fraxinea fungus was found at two sites in East Anglia. | :05:52. | :05:55.
It has already killed 90% of the species in Denmark in just seven | :05:55. | :05:58.
years and tree imports have been blamed for it spreading here to the | :05:58. | :06:02.
There have been scattered wintery showers across eastern Britain. | :06:02. | :06:05.
Snow fell in Newcastle overnight and parts of county Durham had | :06:05. | :06:08.
around an inch of snow by the morning, creating difficult driving | :06:08. | :06:11.
conditions. More than a million tonnes of salt have been set aside | :06:11. | :06:19.
by councils in England and Wales to cope with icy roads this winter. | :06:19. | :06:22.
Hurricane Sandy - which killed more than 40 people in the Caribbean - | :06:22. | :06:25.
has strengthened as it heads towards the east coast of the | :06:25. | :06:28.
United States. The threat of the storm has already led to political | :06:28. | :06:31.
rallies being cancelled there and people stocking up on supplies. A | :06:31. | :06:33.
number of states, including New York and Pennsylvania, have | :06:33. | :06:39.
declared a state of emergency. There's been more fighting across | :06:39. | :06:43.
Syria on what was supposed to be the second day of a four-day | :06:43. | :06:46.
ceasefire negotiated by the international envoy Lakhdar Brahimi. | :06:46. | :06:48.
Opposition activists have accused the government of resuming aerial | :06:48. | :06:52.
bombardments. Syrian state television has blamed what they | :06:52. | :06:56.
call terrorists for the continued violence. Our Middle East | :06:56. | :07:03.
correspondent, Jim Muir, reports from Beirut. | :07:03. | :07:07.
Clearly not what Lakhdar Brahimi had in mind when he called for the | :07:07. | :07:11.
holiday truce. Activists video which we can't independently verify, | :07:11. | :07:18.
appeared to show massive explosions as Government jets pounded the | :07:18. | :07:24.
suburb on the edge of of Damascus. Hostilities have continued in many | :07:24. | :07:29.
parts of the country, including here right up near the Turkish | :07:29. | :07:33.
border in the far north-west. Rebel fighters had no hesitation in | :07:33. | :07:39.
blaming the Government for the violations. TRANSLATION: | :07:39. | :07:44.
We woke up assuming there was a truce. But at 5.00am the army | :07:44. | :07:51.
started shelling us heavily, for them there is no ceasefire. Much of | :07:51. | :07:56.
Syria's third big egs -- biggest city, hoplts, -- Homs, has been | :07:56. | :08:00.
reduced to rubble. What's left has taken another pounding during the | :08:00. | :08:04.
ceasefire according to activists. This is Bashar al-Assad's holiday | :08:04. | :08:09.
greeting to Homs, the cameraman says, just look at all this, this | :08:09. | :08:15.
is Lakhdar Brahimi's so-called truce. | :08:15. | :08:20.
But it wasn't all one way. This activist video said it showed rebel | :08:20. | :08:27.
gunmen attacking a police hospital. And Syrian state television | :08:27. | :08:30.
squarely blamed rebels. It calls them terrorists for all the | :08:30. | :08:37.
violations, saying the army is simply responding. The rebels lack | :08:37. | :08:41.
the heavy weapons the Government is using so freely, like here in | :08:41. | :08:44.
Aleppo. But they're convinced they can win and the regime still | :08:44. | :08:48.
believes it can beat them. With neither side ready to talk, | :08:48. | :08:51.
it's not surprising that Lakhdar Brahimi's truce is going up in | :08:51. | :09:00.
smoke. Sebastian Vettel's hopes of winning | :09:00. | :09:03.
a third consecutive Formula One World Championship have been | :09:03. | :09:05.
boosted after he secured pole position for tomorrow's Indian | :09:05. | :09:08.
Grand Prix. After a shaky start, the German driver clocked the | :09:08. | :09:11.
fastest time ahead of his Red Bull team-mate Mark Webber. The McLarens | :09:11. | :09:14.
of Lewis Hamilton and Jenson Button will line up together on the second | :09:14. | :09:17.
row. Five games so far in the Premier | :09:18. | :09:22.
League today. Aston Villa and Norwich City drew 1-1 at Villa Park. | :09:22. | :09:25.
Michael Turner's glancing header secured a point for the visitors | :09:25. | :09:30.
after Christian Benteke had put Villa a goal up. There were also | :09:30. | :09:34.
wins for Arsenal and Wigan. Reading drew with Fulham, and Stoke were | :09:34. | :09:40. |
