One of Britain's greatest novelists, Doris Lessing, has died at the age

:00:00.:00:10.

of 94. A winner of the Nobel Prize for

:00:11.:00:14.

Literature, she wrote more than 60 books over six decades.

Aid reaches remote communities in the Philippines, more than a week

:00:19.:00:23.

after the typhoon. So if I give you 300, could you try

:00:24.:00:29.

and get four, is that all right? The former chairman of the Co-op bank

:00:30.:00:31.

apologises after claims he bought illegal drugs.

And South Africa overpowers Scotland in a decisive win at Murrayfield.

:00:37.:00:59.

Good evening. The Nobel-Prize winning novelist

:01:00.:01:03.

Doris Lessing has died at her home in London. She was 94. She was one

:01:04.:01:08.

of Britain's most celebrated and prolific authors, producing more

:01:09.:01:11.

than 60 works of fiction and non fiction. One of the few women to win

:01:12.:01:17.

the Nobel Prize for Literature, she was described at the time as a

:01:18.:01:20.

writer of "scepticism, fire and visionary power". Nick Higham looks

:01:21.:01:30.

back at her life. Doris Lessing heard she had won the

:01:31.:01:34.

Nobel Prize from reporters on her doorstep. Reaction was typically

:01:35.:01:38.

forthright. Have you heard that you've won the prize? Oh, Christ.

:01:39.:01:47.

She was never afraid to speak her mind. Her early life on a farm in

:01:48.:01:51.

Africa shaped much of her writing. Her mother felt trapped. The plight

:01:52.:01:59.

of woman was a theme. Her first novel, The Grass Is Singing, was set

:02:00.:02:06.

in what she called the drunken world of white Rhodesians. She married

:02:07.:02:12.

twice, separated twice, escaped to England and became a professional

:02:13.:02:15.

writer. She abandoned her earlier communism but remained politically

:02:16.:02:24.

at -- active. The possible future president of the US only four years

:02:25.:02:28.

ago was talking about the use of an atom bomb just casually, a

:02:29.:02:32.

conventional weapon. What guarantee is there that another slightly

:02:33.:02:36.

off-balance general might take the whole world into war? Her

:02:37.:02:41.

breakthrough novel, The Golden Notebook, appeared in 1962.

:02:42.:02:47.

Complex, it was hailed by feminists, although Doris Lessing

:02:48.:02:52.

was hardly a conventional feminist. I don't think my writing can be

:02:53.:02:55.

described as feminist or not feminist. I think about all kinds of

:02:56.:03:01.

men and women. I have never in my life met a woman who is not a

:03:02.:03:07.

feminist. She published more than 50 works, including short stories,

:03:08.:03:15.

science fiction and space fiction. She wrote because a huge brightly of

:03:16.:03:18.

genres. If there was a theme to her work, I guess it was this

:03:19.:03:23.

exploration, working out how we could be good to ourselves and good

:03:24.:03:30.

for society. These two things don't always go hand-in-hand, of course.

:03:31.:03:35.

She admitted she was often abrasive. Her view of the world was

:03:36.:03:39.

often bleak. But she was also a writer of scepticism, fire and

:03:40.:03:52.

visionary power. More than a week after Typhoon

:03:53.:03:55.

Haiyan struck the Philippines, aid is starting to reach the most remote

:03:56.:03:58.

areas affected. Helicopters from the American aircraft carrier USS George

:03:59.:04:00.

Washington have been helping deliver much-needed supplies. Our

:04:01.:04:02.

correspondent joined one of the flights to the remote town of

:04:03.:04:12.

Guiuan. A glimmer of hope, and a desperate

:04:13.:04:19.

scramble for survival. These villagers living any remote area are

:04:20.:04:23.

finally getting aid, a week after typhoon hit. The US military has

:04:24.:04:28.

been working with the Philippine government to coordinate relief

:04:29.:04:30.

efforts across the devastated islands. We were given access to the

:04:31.:04:39.

USS George Washington, the American Navy's flagship carrier, which

:04:40.:04:44.

serves as a mobile airport. With over 6000 sailors on board, it is

:04:45.:04:50.

working at maximum capacity. We provide a critical element to the

:04:51.:04:53.

support of the government as they support services, food and water

:04:54.:05:01.

delivery to their citizens. It is a good sign of the US partnership with

:05:02.:05:08.

the Philippines. This is just one of 23 helicopters the U.S. Navy is

:05:09.:05:13.

operating. They are making dozens of trips every day, taking aid and

:05:14.:05:20.

supplies to much-needed areas. More than 6000 kg of food, water and

:05:21.:05:26.

medicine has been handed out in the past two days. As soon as it is

:05:27.:05:31.

loaded, it is gone. What is left of this airport has become a hub for

:05:32.:05:36.

American aid efforts. This area was almost completely destroyed. People

:05:37.:05:41.

here are not just in need of food and water, they are also looking for

:05:42.:05:45.

a way out. US planes have been flying people to bigger cities, but

:05:46.:05:52.

it is a long, tiring weight. -- wait. Living here is difficult in

:05:53.:06:02.

this place. So we have to go to Manila, to our relatives that ask

:06:03.:06:09.

for help. I want to go to Manila. My sister is pregnant, I am worried.

:06:10.:06:14.

This idiot landscape lies bruised and battered. The US military says

:06:15.:06:24.

it is here to help. -- idyllic landscape. But this is just the

:06:25.:06:30.

beginning. The former chairman of the Co-op

:06:31.:06:32.

Bank has apologised after a newspaper published a video

:06:33.:06:35.

apparently showing him paying over ?300 for illegal drugs. The Mail on

:06:36.:06:39.

Sunday says Paul Flowers bought and used the drugs - thought to be

:06:40.:06:42.

cocaine - shortly after appearing before a committee of MPs. Mr

:06:43.:06:45.

Flowers - who is also a Methodist minister - said he'd done things

:06:46.:06:48.

that were stupid and wrong. Danny Savage reports. We were the first

:06:49.:06:58.

and are still the only bank to have actually issued an ethical operating

:06:59.:07:04.

plan. He was the high-profile chairman of the co-operative bank.

:07:05.:07:07.

He is also a Methodist church minister, but after being at the

:07:08.:07:12.

helm of an ethical bank, his own ethics are now being questioned. How

:07:13.:07:19.

much? If we give you 300, if you can try and get four, is that all right?

:07:20.:07:27.

A Sunday paper shows this footage, and says it is him trying to buy

:07:28.:07:34.

illegal drugs. It was given in by an acquaintance who met Mr Flowers

:07:35.:07:37.

online and claims to be disgusted by his hypocrisy will stop -- his

:07:38.:07:44.

hypocrisy. It is said to have occurred within days of him being

:07:45.:07:48.

questioned by the Commons select committee. Members of that committee

:07:49.:07:53.

have reacted with shock today. I was absolutely astounded will stop when

:07:54.:07:58.

the Reverend came before us, I would not have guessed that these were the

:07:59.:08:04.

sort of activities he was involved in. He has released a statement

:08:05.:08:12.

saying, at the lowest point in this terrible period, I did things that

:08:13.:08:15.

was stupid and wrong. I am sorry that this and seeking professional

:08:16.:08:24.

help. He has also now been suspended from his job as a Methodist minister

:08:25.:08:29.

at this church in Bradford. The issue which will concern many is

:08:30.:08:35.

this was a man being paid ?132,000 a year to be the chairman of a bank

:08:36.:08:39.

which prides itself on its high ethical standards. Things did go

:08:40.:08:47.

wrong on Paul Flowers's watch. West Yorkshire Police says it has been

:08:48.:08:51.

made of the allegations and is now making further enquiries.

:08:52.:08:58.

Seven men, who were arrested on suspicion of murder after a body was

:08:59.:09:02.

found in a well in Surrey, have been released on bail. Gardeners

:09:03.:09:05.

discovered the body in Warlingham on Friday. A postmortem examination has

:09:06.:09:07.

been taking place and police have appealed for help identifying the

:09:08.:09:10.

victim. One of Britain's most senior public

:09:11.:09:13.

health officials has called for a national debate on whether the age

:09:14.:09:18.

of consent should be lowered. Professor John Ashton, who is

:09:19.:09:21.

president of the Faculty of Public Health which advises ministers, said

:09:22.:09:24.

a change to the current age of 16 could help protect children and

:09:25.:09:27.

reduce teenage pregnancies. Downing Street says there are no plans for

:09:28.:09:39.

any change, as Jon Brain reports. Sex education in this country has

:09:40.:09:43.

come a long way in recent years, but the UK still has the highest rate of

:09:44.:09:46.

teenage pregnancy in Europe. According to the latest survey,

:09:47.:09:52.

nearly one third of children have sex before reaching the age of

:09:53.:09:55.

consent, leaving health experts suggesting lower back that lowering

:09:56.:10:02.

the age to 15 would encourage more to ask for advice and seek

:10:03.:10:07.

contraception. We have significant numbers of pregnancies in under 16

:10:08.:10:10.

's, significant numbers with chlamydia, but we bury our heads in

:10:11.:10:17.

the sand and live in a fantasy land. If politicians are not going to

:10:18.:10:22.

address the sexualisation of childhood, we need other practical

:10:23.:10:24.

measures in place to pick up the pieces. Figures reveal nearly 6000

:10:25.:10:32.

girls under 16 became pregnant in England and Wales alone in 12 months

:10:33.:10:36.

- double the age in France, where the age of consent is 15, and

:10:37.:10:42.

Germany, where it is just 14. But a random poll in the centre of London

:10:43.:10:45.

this afternoon revealed opposition to lowering the age to 15 here. That

:10:46.:10:53.

is truly young to be thinking about sex. It may put pressure on people.

:10:54.:10:59.

If it was lowered, they wouldn't think twice about it. They probably

:11:00.:11:05.

do at the moment. Would you have felt more pressure rise to have sex

:11:06.:11:10.

if it had been legal at 15? Probably. Yes, I would say that. I

:11:11.:11:17.

know people that have. I think 16 is better. I think changing the age of

:11:18.:11:22.

consent wouldn't stop teenagers from doing what they do now. As a parent,

:11:23.:11:26.

I'm more comfortable with it being 16. Child protection experts also

:11:27.:11:35.

have their doubts. By having the age of 16 as a legal limit, it is one

:11:36.:11:39.

told children have in their pockets to say to those people who are

:11:40.:11:43.

putting them under pressure to have sexual elation ships, actually, this

:11:44.:11:46.

is illegal, we should not be doing that. The proposal has also been

:11:47.:11:54.

given short shrift by the government, which says there is no

:11:55.:11:59.

plans to change the status quo. The Prime Minister has announced an

:12:00.:12:02.

inquiry into the tactics of trade unions following the recent

:12:03.:12:04.

industrial dispute at the Grangemouth oil refinery. David

:12:05.:12:06.

Cameron has accused the Unite union of "industrial intimidation". The

:12:07.:12:09.

union dismissed the inquiry as a political stunt, and said it

:12:10.:12:11.

wouldn't participate. Our political correspondent Chris Mason reports.

:12:12.:12:20.

Amid the bitter dispute about the future of the Grangemouth refinery,

:12:21.:12:24.

on the driveway of the refinery boss, protesters from the union

:12:25.:12:30.

gather, complete with flags and an inflatable rat. The Prime Minister

:12:31.:12:35.

called this industrial intimidation, so the government has ordered a

:12:36.:12:39.

review of tactics used in disputes like the one here. Protesters is

:12:40.:12:50.

fine. It's when it moves over into intimidation and clearly

:12:51.:12:52.

inappropriate activity, particularly in the context of an industrial

:12:53.:12:55.

dispute. Then I think we have a concern about that. Unite weren't

:12:56.:13:00.

talking on camera today, but they've always said attack techs are legal

:13:01.:13:08.

and legitimate. Many have said their party politics at play here. It is a

:13:09.:13:14.

horrendous waste of tax payers money. The debate around Unite is

:13:15.:13:21.

always politically charged. Conservatives want an internal

:13:22.:13:29.

report about the row in Falkirk, where Unite was accused and then

:13:30.:13:34.

cleared of rigging the subprocess to elect a candidate. Tory campaigners

:13:35.:13:42.

are always keen to remind voters that Unite is a major donor to the

:13:43.:13:49.

Labour Party. Government sources insist today's announcement is not

:13:50.:13:53.

politically motivated. Labour have doubts. I need reassurance this is

:13:54.:14:01.

not a political call by Mr Cameron. We will see how this develops. Lib

:14:02.:14:07.

Dems are pushing to make sure employees tactics are part of the

:14:08.:14:11.

review. They point out strike rates are at a historic low. If there are

:14:12.:14:17.

sensible, prudent reforms that can help to improve the landscape

:14:18.:14:21.

further, I would be up for that. I am not up for a bunch of union

:14:22.:14:27.

bashing. So, should protest like this be allowed? A lawyer will

:14:28.:14:31.

decide. But politicians will continue to argue about it in the

:14:32.:14:33.

meantime. Rugby, and Scotland has suffered a

:14:34.:14:36.

bruising defeat to South Africa at Murrayfield, losing 28-0. Patrick

:14:37.:14:44.

Gearey was watching the action. By beating Japan last week, Scotland

:14:45.:14:50.

began the autumn on a high, but that perch looked precarious when South

:14:51.:14:53.

Africa came to town. Within five minutes, the Springboks sprung.

:14:54.:15:00.

Willem Alberts was at the front of a line. They were driven into the

:15:01.:15:08.

disintegrating Murrayfield turf. Willie Le Roux's pounds and paste

:15:09.:15:16.

what the game's second try. -- pounce and pace. He was evidence of

:15:17.:15:28.

their brains as well as their brawn. After the break came their return of

:15:29.:15:35.

heavy industry. Scotland needed a spark, but could only produce hot

:15:36.:15:40.

air. When they did work up a head of steam in the final ten minutes,

:15:41.:15:43.

South Africa insured Abe ran out of track. It epitomises an

:15:44.:15:48.

uncomfortable afternoon for Scotland. South Africa specialise in

:15:49.:15:53.

handing those out.
