Good afternoon. A new satellite image has been released showing | :00:21. | :00:24.
debris in the southern Indian Ocean which could be the remains of the | :00:25. | :00:27.
Malaysian passenger plane that's been missing for two weeks. The new | :00:28. | :00:32.
picture which was taken by a Chinese satellite on Tuesday appears to show | :00:33. | :00:35.
a large object in the sea, around 75 miles from an earlier sighting of | :00:36. | :00:40.
possible debris. Our correspondent Alastair Leithead is in Kuala | :00:41. | :00:44.
Lumpur. His report contains flash photography from the start. | :00:45. | :00:53.
The search for flight MH370 has taken many twists and turns. Still | :00:54. | :00:59.
the mystery has not been solved. As the acting trance for minister took | :01:00. | :01:02.
questions, the daily routine briefing, another twist was coming. | :01:03. | :01:08.
Out of you, he was handed a note on a piece of paper. The news I | :01:09. | :01:16.
received is that the Chinese ambassador received satellite images | :01:17. | :01:19.
of floating objects in the southern corridor and they will be sending | :01:20. | :01:23.
ships to verify. The Beijing government have announced -- will | :01:24. | :01:28.
announce this in a couple of hours. It was 22m long. This was the new | :01:29. | :01:37.
satellite image. It shows a huge floating object that is hard to make | :01:38. | :01:41.
out what it is. Search teams have been scarring the southern corridor | :01:42. | :01:43.
for the past three days. Last Sunday, the first image was captured | :01:44. | :01:51.
by an Australian satellite. This latest image was recorded two days | :01:52. | :01:56.
later on Tuesday showing what might be wreckage 75 miles south-west of | :01:57. | :02:03.
the previous one. Is it the same object? What does it tell | :02:04. | :02:09.
investigators? It is highly unlikely that in two days any debris would | :02:10. | :02:12.
have moved in that direction at that speed. We are either looking at | :02:13. | :02:16.
something completely unrelated or we are looking at parts of the same | :02:17. | :02:21.
debris from something which has spread over quite a wide area. After | :02:22. | :02:27.
two weeks of searching in long-range state-of-the-art planes, there have | :02:28. | :02:31.
been many theories and false leads. But this latest find could be | :02:32. | :02:35.
useful. It will help refocus efforts on what is still nominally a search | :02:36. | :02:40.
and rescue operation in the southern Indian Ocean. But for those wanting | :02:41. | :02:45.
to resolve this mystery, it is at the very least a new lead. Families | :02:46. | :02:49.
of those on board came to wait meeting in Beijing hoping for news. | :02:50. | :02:53.
Tempers flared as Malaysian officials refuse to take questions. | :02:54. | :03:02.
We want to know what happened. They accused the Malaysian government of | :03:03. | :03:06.
concealing information, delaying. They feel they have waited too long | :03:07. | :03:10.
for answers. And families here do not want wreckage to be found. The | :03:11. | :03:14.
lack of accurate information is giving them hope. Many believe the | :03:15. | :03:17.
passengers and crew are still alive, as unlikely as that now | :03:18. | :03:21.
appears. Alastair Leithead is in Kuala | :03:22. | :03:27.
Lumpur. Tell us more about how the news emerged. It came as something | :03:28. | :03:32.
of a surprise. It did. Very much so. It was announced in the middle of a | :03:33. | :03:38.
news conference and it came from the Chinese ambassador. I do not think | :03:39. | :03:44.
he wanted the message to come out. China has wanted to try and take | :03:45. | :03:47.
control of this because two thirds of the passengers were Chinese. They | :03:48. | :03:52.
are under a lot of pressure because of the anger of the families over | :03:53. | :03:56.
delays. China is used to being able to throw its weight around in the | :03:57. | :04:01.
region. Because it is being run in Malaysia, they have not been able to | :04:02. | :04:04.
do that. Perhaps they are trying to catch up by showing me satellite | :04:05. | :04:08.
images, to try and show that they do have strong capability to be able to | :04:09. | :04:12.
lead these kind of investigations, to be involved in the way they | :04:13. | :04:16.
should be. These photographs are fascinating and will play an | :04:17. | :04:20.
important role in the research and rescue operation continues. | :04:21. | :04:25.
A veteran Republican has appeared in court in Belfast charged in | :04:26. | :04:27.
connection with the abduction and murder of a woman 40 years ago. Jean | :04:28. | :04:32.
McConville, who was a mother of ten, was one of the so-called | :04:33. | :04:34.
disappeared, people who were killed and secretly buried by the IRA. Ivor | :04:35. | :04:40.
Bell, who is 77, was denied bail. Our Ireland correspondent Chris | :04:41. | :04:49.
Buckler reports. The photograph Jean McConville's | :04:50. | :04:52.
children have of their mother is decades old. In 1972, they watched | :04:53. | :04:57.
as she was dragged out of her home by an IRA gang. When do you think | :04:58. | :05:01.
you will see your mum again? I don't know. Keep our fingers crossed and | :05:02. | :05:07.
pray hard. They would never see her alive again. She became known as one | :05:08. | :05:13.
of the disappeared. People abducted, killed and buried in secret by | :05:14. | :05:18.
republican paramilitaries. Today more than four decades later members | :05:19. | :05:23.
of Jean McConville's family went to court to see a man charged in | :05:24. | :05:28.
connection with her killing. Ivor Bell is alleged to be a former IRA | :05:29. | :05:32.
leader. Today he was accused of aiding and abetting in Jean | :05:33. | :05:36.
McConville's murder. It is claimed the evidence came from test to me he | :05:37. | :05:41.
had given. But McRae testimony. He gave interviews about the Troubles | :05:42. | :05:51.
on condition the Boston tapes would not be published until they died. | :05:52. | :05:55.
Today in Belfast there were protests from some who regard this as a | :05:56. | :06:00.
political prosecution of an elderly man who once represented Republicans | :06:01. | :06:02.
in talks with the British Government. Ivor Bell was denied | :06:03. | :06:08.
bail. In court, his lawyer indicated he would be denying all of the | :06:09. | :06:11.
charges connected to the killing of a widowed mother taken from her home | :06:12. | :06:16.
in West bar fast. Any trial has the potential to be difficult for senior | :06:17. | :06:21.
Republicans, particularly as other allegations have already emerged as | :06:22. | :06:25.
a result of the Boston tapes -- West Belfast. In an interview, the late | :06:26. | :06:32.
IRA commander claimed the Sinn Fein president Gerry Adams was involved | :06:33. | :06:34.
in Jean McConville's death, something he has always denied. | :06:35. | :06:40.
There is only one man who gave the order. That man is now the head of | :06:41. | :06:47.
Sinn Fein. It is only a decade since Jean McConville's remains were | :06:48. | :06:51.
discovered on a beach. Her family says that what ever happens the pain | :06:52. | :06:56.
of losing her will never go away. Russian troops have stormed two | :06:57. | :06:59.
military bases in Crimea in the first direct use of force by Russian | :07:00. | :07:02.
military personnel since the start of the crisis over Ukraine. On | :07:03. | :07:06.
Friday, Russian president, Vladimir Putin, signed a law formalising | :07:07. | :07:09.
Russia's takeover of Crimea from Ukraine, despite fresh sanctions | :07:10. | :07:14.
from the EU and the US. Our correspondent Ian Pannell was inside | :07:15. | :07:17.
the airbase in Belbek when it was stormed by Russian soldiers. What | :07:18. | :07:29.
happened? Pretty extraordinary scenes. There had been a tense build | :07:30. | :07:33.
up over a number of days and then we sort the Russian forces come down | :07:34. | :07:38.
the hill from parts of the base they controlled using armoured vehicles | :07:39. | :07:41.
with heavy guns mounted on top and they tried to battle their way | :07:42. | :07:45.
firstly into the gate and secondly into the outer perimeter wall which | :07:46. | :07:50.
they managed to breach in two locations. It was an incredibly | :07:51. | :07:55.
tense situation. There were a distraction grenades, loud | :07:56. | :07:59.
explosions, automatic gunfire and special forces, Russian special | :08:00. | :08:05.
forces moving in to the base itself. They forced the Ukrainian troops | :08:06. | :08:09.
into one area, forcing them effectively to disarm. Now the bases | :08:10. | :08:14.
under the control of Russian forces. Briefly, it looks like the pressure | :08:15. | :08:21.
is ramping up. Yes, it does. An extraordinary escalation of force by | :08:22. | :08:26.
Russia. There are only a handful of bases left still technically under | :08:27. | :08:32.
the charge of Kiev. Despite an attempt to try and handle both | :08:33. | :08:36.
locally, they clearly decided enough is enough and they want the rest of | :08:37. | :08:41.
these bases under their control. Tonight, they have almost achieved | :08:42. | :08:48.
that. In football, Arsene Wenger's 1,000th match didn't go quite to | :08:49. | :08:51.
plan. His team Arsenal were thrashed in a 6-0 defeat against rivals | :08:52. | :08:54.
Chelsea at Stamford Bridge. Katie Gornall watched the action. | :08:55. | :09:01.
18 years since he first arrived in London, Arsene Wenger's 1000th game | :09:02. | :09:08.
against familiar foe. Arsene Wenger has never beaten Jose Mourinho. | :09:09. | :09:12.
Their first blow was clinical, delivered by Samuel Eto'o, Arsenal | :09:13. | :09:17.
barely had time to dust themselves off before Andre Schurrle sent them | :09:18. | :09:23.
to the canvas once more. Arsenal resorted to desperate measures. This | :09:24. | :09:29.
handball was blatant but not to the referee who sent off a bewildered | :09:30. | :09:34.
Kieran Gibbs by mistake. Despite the culprit saying, it was me. Eden | :09:35. | :09:40.
Hazard slotted home the penalty. Inevitably, more goals followed. Six | :09:41. | :09:47.
in total for Chelsea. Arsene Wenger has had many great memories at | :09:48. | :09:53.
Arsenal, but this was one to forget. Despite the vast experience I have, | :09:54. | :09:58.
when you do not turn up in a game like that, it is your | :09:59. | :10:03.
responsibility. This was Chelsea's biggest win in the Premier League | :10:04. | :10:06.
under Jose Mourinho. Come the end of the Stephen, it could even more | :10:07. | :10:13.
significant -- end of the season. I will | :10:14. | :10:14. |
