A former nurse has appeared in court in Manchester accused of murdering

:00:20.:00:27.

three patients. Victorino Chua, who's 48, was charged after a long

:00:28.:00:29.

police investigation at Stepping Hill Hospital in Stockport. He's

:00:30.:00:33.

also accused of 31 other offences, including attempted poisoning. Our

:00:34.:00:34.

correspondent Ed Thomas reports. After two years on bail, the moment

:00:35.:00:52.

Victorino Chua was rearrested by police. The former nurse is accused

:00:53.:00:56.

of poisoning patients at Stepping Hill Hospital. He arrived at court

:00:57.:01:02.

to face 30 charges. They included three counts of murder, 22 of

:01:03.:01:07.

attempted grievous bodily harm with a tent, and seven counts of

:01:08.:01:12.

attempting to poison patients. Police were first called in July

:01:13.:01:18.

2011 after the deaths of Tracey Arden, Arnold Lancaster, and Derek

:01:19.:01:24.

Weaver. Detectives believe they were given say line contaminated with

:01:25.:01:30.

insulin. The BBC has been given access to the hospital, the place

:01:31.:01:35.

where staff and patients are now watched over like never before.

:01:36.:01:41.

There are hundreds of CCTV cameras outside the wards, filming everyone

:01:42.:01:45.

coming in and out. Stepping Hill Hospital 's own security team

:01:46.:01:49.

patrolling the corridors with support officers from Greater

:01:50.:01:54.

Manchester Police. Nurses who need to administer insulin work in pairs,

:01:55.:01:58.

they check each other while cameras check them. The hospital says it is

:01:59.:02:03.

about making patients and staff feel safe. Three years ago, another

:02:04.:02:10.

former nurse Rebecca Leighton was held for six weeks, suspected of

:02:11.:02:14.

tampering with say nine bags. All charges against her were dropped.

:02:15.:02:21.

Today, Victorino Chua was taken away in a prison van, remanded in custody

:02:22.:02:23.

to appear in Crown Court next week. The first same-sex marriages have

:02:24.:02:30.

taken place in England and Wales after the law enabling them to go

:02:31.:02:35.

ahead came into force at midnight. David Cameron said it sent out a

:02:36.:02:38.

powerful message about equality in Britain, but some religious groups

:02:39.:02:40.

remain opposed. Reeta Chakrabarti's report contains some flash

:02:41.:02:56.

photography. I am now very happy to announce that you are now legally

:02:57.:02:59.

husband and husband. Just after midnight, they were pronounced

:03:00.:03:01.

husband and husband. Squeals of delight drowned out the words. In

:03:02.:03:04.

London and Brighton, men were marrying men. Same-sex marriage had

:03:05.:03:07.

legally arrived, and today there was more to come. Same-sex couples have

:03:08.:03:14.

been waiting for this day for years, across the country. It marks a

:03:15.:03:18.

moment of major social change, and personal joy.

:03:19.:03:22.

I am so happy. We will celebrate the rest of the day. It means so much we

:03:23.:03:28.

have had our friends and loved ones here. I am really happy.

:03:29.:03:35.

Lou and Aarron could have had a civil partnership, which could have

:03:36.:03:38.

given them identical legal rights, but they held out for today. The

:03:39.:03:41.

government brought same-sex marriage into law last year. David Cameron

:03:42.:03:42.

tweeted this message today. Love being what holds you together.

:03:43.:03:55.

Some, like this Huddersfield couple, are having a humanist ceremony after

:03:56.:04:03.

the registry office. But they couldn't have a church wedding, as

:04:04.:04:06.

the law prevents the Church of England conducting them, and allows

:04:07.:04:09.

other religious groups to refuse to perform them. Some Christians say

:04:10.:04:11.

their opposition is about protecting marriage.

:04:12.:04:17.

We can't redefine an institution, something that has always has been,

:04:18.:04:20.

because we say it is something we want. It is self-centred. It's not

:04:21.:04:25.

about rights, but seeking cultural dominance and redefining marriage

:04:26.:04:30.

for all of us. There is a deep vein of dissent but,

:04:31.:04:34.

overall, this is a big moment in society's concept of what marriage

:04:35.:04:42.

is. A ritual millions of heterosexual couples have for

:04:43.:04:44.

centuries taken for granted, has been opened up to any couple,

:04:45.:04:47.

regardless which gender they love. Ships from China and Australia have

:04:48.:04:50.

picked up objects in the area being searched for the remains of the

:04:51.:04:54.

missing Malaysia Airlines flight. They were retrieved during the first

:04:55.:04:58.

day in the new search area, but none of the items have been confirmed to

:04:59.:05:01.

be related to the missing plane. From Perth, Jonah Fisher reports.

:05:02.:05:07.

Having lost more passengers than any other country, China now plays a

:05:08.:05:12.

growing role in efforts to find the missing aeroplane. Today from its

:05:13.:05:16.

aircraft joined those from Australia, New Zealand and Japan.

:05:17.:05:23.

All looking for some sign that MH370 had ended its last flight in the

:05:24.:05:27.

waters of the Indian Ocean. This was the first full day in yet another

:05:28.:05:32.

search area. New analysis of the fuel consumption of the plane has

:05:33.:05:37.

moved efforts 700 miles to the north. Several planes have seen

:05:38.:05:41.

objects in this new search area but it won't be until ships follow up on

:05:42.:05:45.

information that we will have any idea whether this new debris has

:05:46.:05:52.

anything to do with slight MH370. This was the Chinese ship finding

:05:53.:05:58.

and then fishing something man made out of the sea. Was this piece of

:05:59.:06:06.

soggy paper the first trace of the missing plane? After taking a closer

:06:07.:06:12.

look, the verdict was probably not. In Malaysia, officials once again

:06:13.:06:16.

met with relatives of those on board. Miracles do happen. Promote

:06:17.:06:21.

or otherwise, that is the hope the family members want me to convey not

:06:22.:06:26.

only to the Malaysians government, but to the world at large. 26

:06:27.:06:32.

countries and a team of experts have been working on this case. But the

:06:33.:06:37.

world's greatest aviation mystery still feels a very long way from

:06:38.:06:45.

being solved. Here, two men died when a light

:06:46.:06:50.

aircraft crashed in Chelmsford in Essex. It went down in a field

:06:51.:06:55.

having taken off from a nearby airfield.

:06:56.:07:02.

George Osborne again dismissed the idea that a deal could be done to

:07:03.:07:06.

allow Scotland to retain the pound in the event of independence. The

:07:07.:07:09.

Chancellor was reacting to a newspaper report in which an unnamed

:07:10.:07:11.

Westminster minister claimed Scotland would be able to use the

:07:12.:07:15.

pound even if it voted to leave the UK. Let's go live to our Scotland

:07:16.:07:19.

political editor Brian Taylor. The Chancellor is adamant on the issue?

:07:20.:07:26.

He is, he is adamant on this issue, but his opponents, the Scottish

:07:27.:07:30.

Nationalists and others say it was always a bluff by the Chancellor.

:07:31.:07:35.

And they say today's report proves that to be the case. I am at the Lib

:07:36.:07:42.

Dem conference everyone who supports the union campaign is furious at

:07:43.:07:47.

this development. It gives a Philip to their opponents. They insist

:07:48.:07:51.

there is actually in charge of the UK economy as opposed to unnamed

:07:52.:07:57.

ministers, they say, remain resolutely opposed to the idea of a

:07:58.:08:01.

currency union. It is for the voters to decide who is credible in this

:08:02.:08:06.

regard. In today's Premier League matches,

:08:07.:08:08.

the leaders Chelsea were beaten 1-0 at struggling Crystal Palace. But

:08:09.:08:11.

Manchester United bounced back with a big win at Old Trafford against

:08:12.:08:16.

Aston Villa. During the match, a banner was flown over the stadium,

:08:17.:08:19.

calling for the manager David Moyes to be sacked, as Olly Foster

:08:20.:08:23.

reports. Mixed messages at Old Trafford, a

:08:24.:08:30.

rousing welcome for David Moyes, but as one group of fans made this

:08:31.:08:33.

banner, another set of supporters flew this one about the stadium. The

:08:34.:08:38.

manager would have been more worried about this flying in the top corner,

:08:39.:08:42.

the signs were bad when Ashley Westwood give -- gave Aston Villa

:08:43.:08:50.

the lead. Two goals by half-time, this one in the penalty. Benteke

:08:51.:08:56.

squandered a hat-trick of chances for Villa but those would be

:08:57.:09:00.

forgiven -- forgotten in the scoreline. With this substitute

:09:01.:09:07.

striker in injury time, this was almost like the good old days but

:09:08.:09:10.

there could be difficult days ahead. The gloom may have lifted a

:09:11.:09:15.

little but there could be another reality check for United on Tuesday

:09:16.:09:19.

when they face the European champions Bayern Munich in the

:09:20.:09:22.

quarterfinals of the Champions League.

:09:23.:09:25.

And finally, Britain's Lewis Hamilton will start from pole

:09:26.:09:27.

position in tomorrow's Malaysian Grand Prix. In heavy, tropical rain

:09:28.:09:33.

the Mercedes driver pipped Red Bull's Sebastian Vettel by just five

:09:34.:09:36.

hundreths of a second. It was Hamilton's 33rd pole position of his

:09:37.:09:38.

career, equalling Jim Clark's record for a British Formula 1 driver.

:09:39.:09:45.

We're back with the late news at 10.10pm. Now on BBC One, it's time

:09:46.:09:50.

for the news where you are. Goodbye.
