the southern Indian Ocean. It's thought they may come from the black | :00:14. | :00:17.
box flight recorder. 13 search vessels are now in the area. We are | :00:18. | :00:25.
hopeful, but by no means certain, this is the most difficult search in | :00:26. | :00:33.
human history. The Culture Secretary Maria Miller is under more pressure | :00:34. | :00:36.
as a senior Conservative calls for her to resign. The race today is | :00:37. | :00:44.
cancelled. Sheffield half marathon is cancelled moments before the | :00:45. | :00:47.
start as organisers ran out of water. And Gerrard's spot on, as | :00:48. | :00:52.
Liverpool return to the top of the Premier League. | :00:53. | :01:11.
Good evening. A Royal Navy ship HMS Echo, has joined the search in the | :01:12. | :01:21.
southern Indian Ocean where electronic signals have been | :01:22. | :01:24.
detected in the hunt for the missing Malaysian ailriner. Investigators | :01:25. | :01:26.
believe the sounds could be coming from the aircraft's black box flight | :01:27. | :01:29.
recorder. Jon Donnison is in Perth where the search is being | :01:30. | :01:34.
co-ordinated. After a month-long mystery, the search for MH 370 is | :01:35. | :01:38.
now focused on this Chinese ship. The technology looks somewhat crude. | :01:39. | :01:41.
Essentially, a large microphone dipped into the water. But it was | :01:42. | :01:49.
this device that picked up a possible signals from the missing | :01:50. | :01:52.
black box flight recorder. First, just briefly on Friday, and then | :01:53. | :01:55.
again from around 90 seconds on Saturday. Now an Australian Navy | :01:56. | :02:02.
ship has also registered underwater sounds at a separate location. We | :02:03. | :02:12.
had three separate acoustic events. Two with 01. And another one with | :02:13. | :02:22.
ocean shield. We are treating each of them very seriously. This is | :02:23. | :02:27.
where the Chinese ship detected two sets of signals close together. | :02:28. | :02:30.
Around 1000 miles north-west of Perth. The Australians picked up | :02:31. | :02:35.
signals around 350 miles away. They were heard by this ship, the ocean | :02:36. | :02:38.
shield, which uses a more advanced device. The black box sends out a | :02:39. | :02:41.
signal at 37.5 kilohertz. The same frequency as the ones recorded by | :02:42. | :02:47.
the Chinese search teams. But the flight recorder's battery only lasts | :02:48. | :02:50.
30 days. And it could be miles underwater. The ocean here is up to | :02:51. | :03:02.
4500 metres deep. A Royal Navy ship, HMS Echo, carrying advanced search | :03:03. | :03:04.
technology, has now arrived in the area to try to verify the Chinese | :03:05. | :03:07.
findings. A British nuclear submarine is also close by. | :03:08. | :03:15.
Investigators will be hoping this is a breakthrough and not another false | :03:16. | :03:20.
lead. But, as the surge from the air also continues, what will worry them | :03:21. | :03:26.
is that, after over 150 flights, still no actual wreckage has been | :03:27. | :03:30.
found. And we can speak to Jon Donnison now. Is there a real sense | :03:31. | :03:35.
that this is the breakthrough the authorities had been looking for? I | :03:36. | :03:42.
think the investigators are encouraged but cautious and it | :03:43. | :03:45.
interesting we have not heard from the Chinese today. I think some | :03:46. | :03:50.
might think was a bad sign and, of course, there were a dozen flights | :03:51. | :03:54.
which went up on Sunday, search flights, and they gain came back, | :03:55. | :04:00.
having spotted no debris whatsoever. So it would be unusual if the first | :04:01. | :04:04.
piece of debris they found was the black box itself. But you do feel | :04:05. | :04:08.
that this search is intensifying, rather than easing up, and there is | :04:09. | :04:14.
a time pressure, of course. We have black box's batteries which expire | :04:15. | :04:18.
after 30 days, exactly where we are now and it's going to be very | :04:19. | :04:23.
interesting to see what HMS Echo discovers now it's arrived on the | :04:24. | :04:26.
scene with perhaps more state-of-the-art technology on | :04:27. | :04:31.
board. Many thanks, John. Lord Tebbit, the former Conservative | :04:32. | :04:34.
Party Chairman, has called on the Culture Secretary Maria Miller to | :04:35. | :04:39.
resign. He's accused her of arrogance, in the controversy over | :04:40. | :04:45.
her expenses claims. The head of the parliamentary expenses watchdog Sir | :04:46. | :04:47.
Ian Kennedy, says MPs should no longer have powers to overrule | :04:48. | :04:50.
investigators, as they did in Mrs Miller's case. Here's our Political | :04:51. | :04:56.
Correspondent Gary O'Donoghue. Four days on and Maria Miller is still | :04:57. | :04:59.
under pressure over the expenses she came in the way she handled | :05:00. | :05:02.
investigation into her affairs by the Parliamentary authorities and | :05:03. | :05:08.
her fellow MPs. Now Lord Tebbit has become the first Conservative to | :05:09. | :05:11.
call for her resignation describing Mrs Miller as arrogant. That comes | :05:12. | :05:19.
on top of a call from the chairman of the independent Parliamentary | :05:20. | :05:21.
standards authority which oversees MPs expenses to reform the system | :05:22. | :05:29.
further. Sir Ian Kennedy told a Sunday newspaper: | :05:30. | :05:38.
I, of course, unreservedly apologise. Despite that brief | :05:39. | :05:48.
apology, Maria Miller's case has highlighted what some see as a | :05:49. | :05:57.
continuing weakness in the system. In Mrs Miller's case, a | :05:58. | :05:59.
Parliamentary standards Commissioner who investigated her recommended you | :06:00. | :06:02.
should give back more than ?45,000 in mortgage payments. But the ten | :06:03. | :06:09.
MPs and three lay members on the common standards committee reduced | :06:10. | :06:13.
that to less than ?6000. Today the Work and Pensions Secretary gave his | :06:14. | :06:16.
backing to Maria Miller but became the most senior government member to | :06:17. | :06:19.
acknowledge the system might have to change. I'm very happy for that to | :06:20. | :06:23.
be debated. I'm amongst a number of those who feel this goes on and on | :06:24. | :06:26.
and on eating away at the credibility of Parliament. Whatever | :06:27. | :06:30.
it takes to restore the credibility. He may have a point? I'm very open | :06:31. | :06:35.
to independent people looking at this. The sooner we can get rid of | :06:36. | :06:44.
this nonsense about. The better. Expenses can have also hit Labour | :06:45. | :06:47.
had in the past. These are among the five Labour MPs who went to prison. | :06:48. | :06:51.
Now the party says reform has to come. It's not just about what goes | :06:52. | :06:59.
on inside Westminster but about what the public regard that as | :07:00. | :07:02.
acceptable. And I think it's clear from what's gone on in the last few | :07:03. | :07:06.
days of the moment we don't have a system that commands public support. | :07:07. | :07:09.
Labour want reform but they're not saying what it should be. No one is | :07:10. | :07:12.
saying if the Prime Minister wants change. As for Maria Miller herself, | :07:13. | :07:15.
well, the Tory party chairman Grant Shapps repeatedly declined to give | :07:16. | :07:18.
her his full backing today. So this one isn't over yet. There have been | :07:19. | :07:27.
several large pro-Russia demonstrations in cities across | :07:28. | :07:30.
eastern Ukraine today. Some of which turned violent. In Donetsk, a large | :07:31. | :07:33.
group of people broke into the provincial government building, | :07:34. | :07:35.
demanding a referendum on a separate republic for the region. The | :07:36. | :07:37.
country's interim President has cancelled a trip abroad to deal with | :07:38. | :07:43.
the protests. President Obama has congratulated Afghanistan on what he | :07:44. | :07:46.
called a landmark election. He said the poll to choose a successor to | :07:47. | :07:49.
President Hamid Karzai was critical in securing the country's democratic | :07:50. | :07:53.
future. Election officials have begun counting the estimated seven | :07:54. | :08:00.
million ballots. Our correspondent David Loyn reports from Kabul. In a | :08:01. | :08:04.
huge logistical operation after a larger than expected turnout, ballot | :08:05. | :08:06.
boxes have been moving across Afghanistan all day as the counts | :08:07. | :08:11.
get underway. Seven million people, third of them women, braved Taliban | :08:12. | :08:14.
intimidation and bad weather to vote. Women trying to get into vote | :08:15. | :08:23.
broke down the door of a polling station in the North. Afghanistan in | :08:24. | :08:27.
general, and Afghan women, went through a moment, a historic moment | :08:28. | :08:29.
yesterday, coming to the polling centres and casting their ballots. | :08:30. | :08:37.
With the campaign ever, candidates are making unofficial claims about | :08:38. | :08:42.
their standing. The former finance minister Ashraf Ghani said he's | :08:43. | :08:48.
ahead. If no candidate wins more than 50% of the vote, there has to | :08:49. | :08:51.
be another round of voting between the top two. Unless one withdraws. | :08:52. | :09:03.
Speaking to the BBC, Ashraf Ghani has, for the first time, said he's | :09:04. | :09:08.
against a deal. There has to be a clear winner so we can say the | :09:09. | :09:11.
public gave us a mandate. Negotiation behind the doors is | :09:12. | :09:14.
going to deprive the public of the voice. The other leading candidate | :09:15. | :09:24.
once the deal rather than having a second round. Now the real politics | :09:25. | :09:29.
begins. After more than three decades of conflict left so much of | :09:30. | :09:32.
Afghanistan in ruins, the election campaign ignited real interest. Now | :09:33. | :09:36.
one of the leading candidates tells us he wants a second-round. So it's | :09:37. | :09:39.
clear who the democratically elected leader of Afghanistan is going to | :09:40. | :09:49.
be. Thousands of runners defied officials in Sheffield this morning | :09:50. | :09:52.
and decided to run the city's half-marathon, despite it's | :09:53. | :09:53.
cancellation because supplies of water didn't arrive. Chaos followed | :09:54. | :10:02.
as many people ignore the announcement and ran the race | :10:03. | :10:08.
anyway. Anne-Marie Tasker explains. More than 5000 runners struggle to | :10:09. | :10:11.
keep warm up before hearing over the tannoy the racers. The race today is | :10:12. | :10:19.
cancelled. The majority set off anyway. Unbelievably, for a half | :10:20. | :10:24.
marathon, none of the water was essential for the race and it was | :10:25. | :10:34.
not delivered. The race, first of all this morning, the water browsers | :10:35. | :10:37.
we order did not arrive so then we went round the supermarket around | :10:38. | :10:40.
Sheffield run the route to get what ought to be covered and they also | :10:41. | :10:43.
contacted other branches and got what order they could. We delayed | :10:44. | :10:48.
the start but then it became obvious we still haven't found enough water. | :10:49. | :10:52.
Those taking part were determined to complete the race. Spectators | :10:53. | :10:55.
brought their own water to make up for the lack of official supplies. | :10:56. | :11:01.
It was a bit of a shambles really. We were on the starting line for | :11:02. | :11:04.
about an hour before we actually went, which is not good when you're | :11:05. | :11:08.
trying to keep yourself warm in the cold weather. I heard it had been | :11:09. | :11:13.
cancelled. I didn't even know that, actually. We went going to let it | :11:14. | :11:20.
stop as. To be honest, Sheffield people did fantastic. In a city | :11:21. | :11:23.
known for its sporting excellence, this is an embarrassment, one they | :11:24. | :11:28.
won't want to repeat and this year the people of Sheffield rallied | :11:29. | :11:32.
round. They hope next year that won't be necessary. With all the | :11:33. | :11:38.
sport, here's Katherine Downes at the BBC Sport Centre. | :11:39. | :11:44.
Good evening. Liverpool are back on the top of the Premier League after | :11:45. | :11:47.
beating West Ham 2-1. Their ninth win in a row. There were three | :11:48. | :11:51.
points for Everton as well. They beat Arsenal 3-0 to strengthen their | :11:52. | :11:54.
chances of a Champions League place next season. Tim Hague reports on a | :11:55. | :11:57.
successful day for the Merseyside clubs. | :11:58. | :12:01.
But neither calm exterior thoughts of the title must be bubbling away | :12:02. | :12:08.
for Brendan Rodgers. Liverpool, top of the table. Luis Suarez Mac' nine | :12:09. | :12:12.
girls have helped with that and he came so close to number 30. Wiley | :12:13. | :12:17.
couldn't score, he played provider. West Ham handball in the box and | :12:18. | :12:24.
Steven Gerrard made 1-0 yet Liverpool's past came back to bite | :12:25. | :12:31.
them. It seemed at first. The referee, Anthony Taylor, overruled | :12:32. | :12:35.
the assistant who said there was a foul. Liverpool, furious, because | :12:36. | :12:43.
there was one and guess who from. Former Liverpool player, Andy | :12:44. | :12:46.
Carroll. He almost put West Ham ahead after half-time thumping the | :12:47. | :12:50.
bar with a header. Before more controversy. The referee giving | :12:51. | :12:54.
Liverpool a second penalty when the goalkeeper clearly won the ball | :12:55. | :12:58.
first but to win the league, you need luck. Steven Gerrard made the | :12:59. | :13:02.
most of it. Three points for Liverpool and their eyes are firmly | :13:03. | :13:07.
fixed on the title. On Merseyside, Liverpool 's local rivals Everton | :13:08. | :13:10.
blew the race for Champions League football wide open. They outplayed | :13:11. | :13:15.
Arsenal going 2-0 in the first half before making it three in the | :13:16. | :13:19.
second. A victory which means Everton no trial The Gunners by one | :13:20. | :13:24.
point with a game in hand. When Martinez took over last summer, he | :13:25. | :13:28.
said he would provide Champions League football for Everton. There | :13:29. | :13:30.
where laughs but no one is laughing now. Oxford have won the 160th boat | :13:31. | :13:35.
race. They beat Cambridge by 11 lengths to claim their fifth win in | :13:36. | :13:42.
seven years. Our Correspondent Jon Brain is at the finish line, and | :13:43. | :13:45.
Jon, a fairly easy victory for Oxford in the end? It was, and | :13:46. | :13:53.
Oxford's preparations this had been hampered by the flooding which | :13:54. | :13:57.
caused disruption across the UK. But with three medallists on their crew, | :13:58. | :14:00.
they still arrived here as firm favourites. It wasn't without | :14:01. | :14:05.
incident. Just a few minutes in, there was an apparent clash of wars | :14:06. | :14:12.
between the two crews and Cambridge Micah boss Luca Docket lost control | :14:13. | :14:14.
of his. From then on, the contest was effectively over. Oxford built | :14:15. | :14:18.
up a commanding lead which they never looked like winning pushing | :14:19. | :14:23.
and across the line 11 lengths to spare. The 78th victory in the boat | :14:24. | :14:28.
race, now just three wins away from their great rivals. OK, thank you | :14:29. | :14:33.
very much. Great Britain have missed out on a first Davis Cup semi final | :14:34. | :14:36.
in 33 years. They lost their quarter final to Italy, having started the | :14:37. | :14:40.
day with a 2-1 lead. But Andy Murray was beaten in straight sets by | :14:41. | :14:46.
clay-court specialist Fabio Fognini. And James Ward lost the deciding | :14:47. | :14:49.
rubber to Andreas Seppi. England's women have been convincingly beaten | :14:50. | :14:56.
in the final of the T20 World Cup. They lost to Australia by six | :14:57. | :14:59.
wickets. England could only manage a hundred and five for eight off their | :15:00. | :15:02.
20 overs. And Australia reached their target with four-and-a-half | :15:03. | :15:04.
overs to spare. England captain Charlotte Edwards admitted her side | :15:05. | :15:09.
were completely outplayed. Highlights of the Bahrain Grand Prix | :15:10. | :15:13.
will be on BBC Two later tonight so look away now if you don't want to | :15:14. | :15:16.
know what happened. The third race of the season was won by Mercedes' | :15:17. | :15:20.
Lewis Hamilton. His team-mate Nico Rosberg started from pole position, | :15:21. | :15:23.
but Hamilton took the lead on the first corner and the pair battled it | :15:24. | :15:27.
out right up to the chequered flag. Hamilton held on to claim his second | :15:28. | :15:30.
Grand Prix this season. Mercedes have won all three so far. That's | :15:31. | :15:39.
all the sport. Many thanks. There's more throughout | :15:40. | :15:44.
the evening on the BBC News Channel. And I'll be back with the late | :15:45. | :15:45. |
