Jimmy Hill - footballer, presenter, and one of the most influential | :00:00. | :00:00.
Good evening and welcome to Match of the Day on the last Saturday | :00:07. | :00:15.
On TV he was the face of football for decades, | :00:16. | :00:20.
In tributes today, he's been described as a football man | :00:21. | :00:28.
through and through and an innovator in the sport. | :00:29. | :00:31.
An extraordinary life within the game. | :00:32. | :00:35.
He has given so much on the pitch, off the pitch and in the TV studio. | :00:36. | :00:40.
We'll be looking back at a remarkable life and career. | :00:41. | :00:42.
The Labour peer Lord Janner - who a few weeks ago was ruled unfit | :00:43. | :00:50.
to stand trial in connection with sexual offences | :00:51. | :00:52.
New hope for Syria as the UN Security Council unanimously backs | :00:53. | :00:59.
And they called it Panic Saturday - how early sales have tempted | :01:00. | :01:07.
He was a player, a broadcaster and a legend of the game. | :01:08. | :01:34.
Jimmy Hill, the former Match of the Day presenter, | :01:35. | :01:37.
He'd been suffering from Alzheimer's disease. | :01:38. | :01:42.
During his career, he successfully argued for the abolition of the ?20 | :01:43. | :01:45.
Gary Lineker this afternoon described Jimmy Hill as a genuine | :01:46. | :01:54.
innovator and a football man through and through. | :01:55. | :01:57.
Our Sports Correspondent Andy Swiss looks back at a remarkable life. | :01:58. | :02:05.
Good evening and welcome to Match of the Day on the last Saturday | :02:06. | :02:09.
He was the face of football, but so much more. | :02:10. | :02:14.
Player, manager, broadcaster and innovator. | :02:15. | :02:17.
Few have influenced the modern game as much as Jimmy Hill. | :02:18. | :02:21.
At his former clubs this afternoon, fans paid tribute to a man | :02:22. | :02:24.
We wouldn't be here today, this wouldn't be here, | :02:25. | :02:29.
everything about Coventry City wouldn't be here | :02:30. | :02:31.
The things that he did just revolutionised the game. | :02:32. | :02:37.
He will never be forgotten at this club, I can assure | :02:38. | :02:42.
Born in south London, Hill first made his name | :02:43. | :02:45.
Off it, he would soon have a greater impact. | :02:46. | :02:49.
As head of the Players' Union, he brought an end the ?20 a week | :02:50. | :02:53.
wage cap and for the first time, footballers could cash in. | :02:54. | :02:59.
This is Jimmy Hill, Fulham's famous bearded inside right, | :03:00. | :03:02.
shaving with the new Remington, the world's fastest shave. | :03:03. | :03:10.
As manager of Coventry in the 1960s, he brought promotion but also | :03:11. | :03:14.
He introduced pre-match entertainment, trains to take fans | :03:15. | :03:20.
Having guided them to the top flight, he suddenly quit | :03:21. | :03:25.
At ITV he created the idea of having football pundits before | :03:26. | :03:32.
he moved to the BBC and Match of the Day. | :03:33. | :03:36.
Good evening and welcome to Match of the Day for the start | :03:37. | :03:39.
During the 1970s, that famous chin and distinctive beard turned him | :03:40. | :03:44.
into football's biggest fixture, but all of the time | :03:45. | :03:48.
He returned to Coventry as chairman and led | :03:49. | :03:52.
the battle against hooliganism, creating England's first all-seater | :03:53. | :03:55.
He pushed for the introduction of three points for a win, | :03:56. | :04:00.
So much of the current game, not least its wealthy players, | :04:01. | :04:04.
A lot of professional footballers since then have a lot to thank him | :04:05. | :04:13.
Always looking to improve things and change things. | :04:14. | :04:21.
He stepped in as an emergency linesman at one game, | :04:22. | :04:26.
took up horse riding for a TV programme, not entirely | :04:27. | :04:28.
and was a regular target for satirists. | :04:29. | :04:32.
He was more than happy to poke fun at himself. | :04:33. | :04:35.
Losing games in football is not something they wanted to do. | :04:36. | :04:39.
Winning, yes, losing, you don't want to do that. | :04:40. | :04:44.
From his real-life colleagues, there was only affection. | :04:45. | :04:48.
He was by my side, a reassuring figure, correcting me quietly | :04:49. | :04:51.
Jimmy had that kind of personality and humanity, and a fantastic | :04:52. | :04:57.
And most of all, he thought of things before other people did. | :04:58. | :05:05.
Indeed, he was a man ahead of his time. | :05:06. | :05:08.
While his forthright views may have divided opinion, | :05:09. | :05:12.
Jimmy Hill's impact on modern football is surely beyond dispute. | :05:13. | :05:20.
The footballer and broadcaster Jimmy Hill, who died today. | :05:21. | :05:26.
The former Labour MP Lord Janner has died | :05:27. | :05:28.
Earlier this month, a judge ruled that his dementia meant he was unfit | :05:29. | :05:33.
to stand trial on 22 counts of historical sexual | :05:34. | :05:36.
Lord Janner always denied the claims. | :05:37. | :05:41.
Tonight, a lawyer who represents six alleged victims said | :05:42. | :05:43.
it was devastating news for her clients. | :05:44. | :05:45.
Our Political Correspondent, Chris Mason, reports. | :05:46. | :05:56.
This was the closest Lord Janner came to having two and served for | :05:57. | :06:04.
the sex crimes he was accused. Threatened with arrest, facing | :06:05. | :06:06.
charges of sexual abuse over three decades, he appeared at Westminster | :06:07. | :06:12.
Magistrates' Court in the summer but a High Court judge later concluded | :06:13. | :06:15.
that a man who could very recognise his own family was not fit to stand | :06:16. | :06:22.
trial. There was not a shred of truth in any of the allegations. | :06:23. | :06:28.
Lord Janner, a Labour MP for 27 years, was forced to deny | :06:29. | :06:30.
allegations of wrongdoing as early as 1991. This is a notorious | :06:31. | :06:35.
children's home in Leicester where Lord Janner was a mP. It is where | :06:36. | :06:40.
one of the country's worst paedophiles, Frank back, preyed on | :06:41. | :06:45.
young people. During his trial one-man alleged there another | :06:46. | :06:49.
abuser. Lord Janner. That was not the end of it, he became a peer, | :06:50. | :06:55.
allegations of child abuse multiplied but in 2007 prosecutors | :06:56. | :06:59.
said there wasn't enough evidence to try him. By the time proceedings did | :07:00. | :07:04.
begin, it was too late. Obviously, sincere condolences to Lord Janner's | :07:05. | :07:09.
family but this is a deeply disappointing day for his alleged | :07:10. | :07:13.
victims. All they had ever wanted to do was give their evidence in a | :07:14. | :07:16.
court of law and for that evidence to be tested and they have seen that | :07:17. | :07:21.
justice has been denied to them at the 11th hour. Lord Janner was a | :07:22. | :07:27.
prominent figure in the Jewish community and founded the Holocaust | :07:28. | :07:31.
educational trust. Tonight, the Chief Rabbi paid tribute to his | :07:32. | :07:37.
work. Lord Janner's alleged victims already knew he would never face | :07:38. | :07:40.
conviction for the offences he had been charged with. But they were | :07:41. | :07:44.
going to be able to make their case in court in the spring. With Lord | :07:45. | :07:49.
Janner's death, that is not likely to happen. | :07:50. | :07:51.
What does like to happen? Who was due to be a trial of defects in | :07:52. | :08:02.
April, a curious legal twist which would have involved an examination | :08:03. | :08:05.
of the evidence against Lord Janner but without him being there. A jury | :08:06. | :08:10.
would have been there, and it's fit aims could appear in court but there | :08:11. | :08:13.
would have been no finding of guilt or conviction but tonight the Crown | :08:14. | :08:17.
Prosecution Service told the BBC that subject to formal confirmation | :08:18. | :08:21.
that they will receive the death, that will not happen. It leaves the | :08:22. | :08:24.
alleged victims and their families deeply frustrated because whilst | :08:25. | :08:27.
they knew there was no prospect of conviction of Lord Janner, at least | :08:28. | :08:31.
felt there was an opportunity in court to say what they had been | :08:32. | :08:34.
thinking for many years. What they will now hope, I think, is that this | :08:35. | :08:38.
will be picked up by the government 's child abuse enquiry being chaired | :08:39. | :08:44.
by Gothard, which is due to get under way soon and we hope that can | :08:45. | :08:47.
provide some answers and at least they will hope that lessons can be | :08:48. | :08:51.
learned from their own experience of criminal justice system. Thank you, | :08:52. | :08:53.
Chris Mason. There are fresh hopes that the end | :08:54. | :08:56.
of the war in Syria could be a step closer after a United Nations peace | :08:57. | :09:00.
plan received the unanimous backing The plan calls for a nationwide | :09:01. | :09:02.
ceasefire and formal talks about a new inclusive government, | :09:03. | :09:06.
although there is no mention Our Chief International | :09:07. | :09:09.
Correspondent, Lyse Doucet, reports. Nearly five years of fighting | :09:10. | :09:16.
have left Syria in ruin. Torn between a vast array | :09:17. | :09:21.
of rebel forces battling The so-called Islamic State has | :09:22. | :09:24.
taken territory too and that's The bitter battles over Syria's | :09:25. | :09:31.
future also blocked the UN Security Council for years, | :09:32. | :09:38.
but now at last, the deadlock The time is now to stop | :09:39. | :09:41.
the killing in Syria, lay the groundwork for a government, | :09:42. | :09:49.
that the long-suffering people The new road map | :09:50. | :09:51.
is hugely ambitious. Along with efforts | :09:52. | :09:56.
to reach a ceasefire. The goal is a transitional, | :09:57. | :10:06.
national unity government within six months and UN supervised | :10:07. | :10:08.
elections a year later. To achieve this, they had to put | :10:09. | :10:12.
aside the biggest dispute, Not only for moral reasons | :10:13. | :10:15.
because of the destruction he has unleashed upon his own people, | :10:16. | :10:23.
but for practical reasons because it will never be possible to bring | :10:24. | :10:27.
peace and unity to Syria as long But Russia's new military | :10:28. | :10:30.
intervention in Syria is strengthening President Assad's | :10:31. | :10:38.
forces along key front lines TRANSLATION: My counterparts say | :10:39. | :10:41.
let's start a political process that those who want to oust Assad | :10:42. | :10:50.
are getting some hope It is very sad that once again, | :10:51. | :10:53.
our common task, that is, putting an end to terrorism has | :10:54. | :11:00.
become hostage to one personality. This is no longer just Syria's war, | :11:01. | :11:09.
but millions of Syrians are paying Syria has been called | :11:10. | :11:12.
the humanitarian test of our time, now it is the greatest | :11:13. | :11:19.
of political challenges. Today was expected to be the busiest | :11:20. | :11:26.
shopping day of the year. Many retailers have | :11:27. | :11:31.
started their sales early rather than wait | :11:32. | :11:33.
until after Christmas and more than 12.5 million | :11:34. | :11:37.
of us were thought to be bargain-hunting on what analysts | :11:38. | :11:39.
called Panic Saturday. Our business correspondent, | :11:40. | :11:42.
Joe Lynam, has been out A few years ago, getting discounts | :11:43. | :11:43.
of up to 50% before Christmas Day It is the last Saturday before | :11:44. | :11:51.
Christmas and retail experts believe we will spend as much as ?6 billion | :11:52. | :12:00.
over the next six shopping days. Unseasonably warm weather | :12:01. | :12:06.
and disappointing High Street sales on Black Friday have meant some | :12:07. | :12:09.
retailers have a lot of stock which they need to shift | :12:10. | :12:12.
before the winter sales This has had the effect of bringing | :12:13. | :12:14.
forward some heady discounting stores, such as Debenhams, | :12:15. | :12:21.
Argos and H I have bought comedy things | :12:22. | :12:24.
for the Christmas table. If you are panic buying, | :12:25. | :12:33.
you are not likely to get a bargain I am literally buying | :12:34. | :12:36.
from the first shop I walk into. We bought a laptop today | :12:37. | :12:42.
with a good discount. I will wait till tomorrow, | :12:43. | :12:49.
I'm a clever man that way! Footfall, the number of people | :12:50. | :12:54.
physically crossing thresholds, is down slightly on last year, | :12:55. | :12:57.
according to the analysts Much of that is due to the ever | :12:58. | :12:59.
increasing rise in online shopping. The UK High Street is much more | :13:00. | :13:06.
competitive than it has ever been. One reason is the shopper | :13:07. | :13:10.
is much more experienced, knowledgeable, they will go online | :13:11. | :13:13.
to tell them what is what. So when they walk into a shop, | :13:14. | :13:18.
they are expecting a nice If they don't get that, | :13:19. | :13:22.
they're walking out. It was shirt sleeves weather | :13:23. | :13:31.
in parts of the UK today, which will have coaxed extra | :13:32. | :13:34.
shoppers to the High Street. But to make them spend, | :13:35. | :13:36.
shopkeepers have had The former Netherlands boss | :13:37. | :13:38.
Guus Hiddink has been appointed It's his second time in the job - | :13:39. | :13:43.
he led the team to FA He replaces Jose Mourinho, | :13:44. | :13:49.
who was sacked on Thursday. As Match of the Day | :13:50. | :13:54.
follows this programme, if you don't want to know | :13:55. | :13:56.
the result of today's game, you need to leave the room now | :13:57. | :13:59.
because there are details For Chelsea, the beginning of | :14:00. | :14:02.
a new era, the post-Mourinho error. Despite being sacked on Thursday, | :14:03. | :14:10.
the so-called Special One was still the talk of | :14:11. | :14:13.
Stamford Bridge today. Just hours before Chelsea kicked | :14:14. | :14:17.
off against Sunderland, Mourinho was spotted watching | :14:18. | :14:20.
Brighton take on Middlesbrough and his representatives | :14:21. | :14:22.
issued a statement. In it, they said the Portuguese | :14:23. | :14:26.
will not be taking a sabbatical, he isn't tired, he doesn't need it, | :14:27. | :14:29.
he is very positive Speculation about where | :14:30. | :14:31.
he goes next will rage. His replacement at Chelsea | :14:32. | :14:37.
is Guus Hiddink, appointed until the end of the season | :14:38. | :14:40.
for the second time. The Dutchman watched the Blues | :14:41. | :14:44.
return to winning ways. A much-needed result in what has | :14:45. | :14:46.
been a dreadful season The managerial job at Chelsea | :14:47. | :14:49.
is for an experienced manager, we need an experienced manager | :14:50. | :14:56.
at this club. So, Chelsea make an encouraging | :14:57. | :14:59.
start to life after Mourinho. But the supporters remain split over | :15:00. | :15:07.
the decision to get rid of him. We know the players can | :15:08. | :15:11.
perform when they could, Absolutely gutted | :15:12. | :15:13.
but what can you do? Guus Hiddink is a good choice | :15:14. | :15:20.
until the end of the season. Come the summer, Chelsea will | :15:21. | :15:23.
appoint a new permanent manager. The only certainty is it | :15:24. | :15:26.
won't be Jose Mourinho. David Ornstein, BBC | :15:27. | :15:29.
News, Stamford Bridge. You can see more about all today's | :15:30. | :15:32.
stories on the BBC News Channel. T-shirt weather for some of us | :15:33. | :16:02.
through this afternoon but some rarer weather for others, like | :16:03. | :16:06.
northern Spain and south-west France, 25 degrees so not just us | :16:07. | :16:07.
