The Government drops plans to cut tax relief on pension contributions.

:00:00.:00:10.

It follows warnings that the Chancellor's proposals

Violence in Turkey after a crackdown on the press.

:00:13.:00:18.

The authorities take over the country's biggest newspaper.

:00:19.:00:22.

And met the newlyweds - Rupert Murdoch and Jerry Hall

:00:23.:00:25.

The Chancellor, George Osborne, has dropped plans to cut tax relief

:00:26.:00:50.

He had been expected to announce the move in the Budget in less

:00:51.:00:56.

than two weeks' time, but he was warned the changes

:00:57.:00:59.

Some campaigners say he's missed a huge opportunity to tackle pension

:01:00.:01:05.

inequality and to help the lower paid.

:01:06.:01:07.

Our political correspondent, Ross Hawkins, has more.

:01:08.:01:10.

It would have been a radical Budget Day change to the way

:01:11.:01:14.

At the moment, you're not taxed on the money you pay

:01:15.:01:19.

Instead, you pay your tax when the pension pays out.

:01:20.:01:24.

One idea was that this could be reversed, so the Government

:01:25.:01:27.

would tax money on the way in and not on the way out,

:01:28.:01:30.

which would have raised extra cash for the Treasury in the short term.

:01:31.:01:35.

The Chancellor seemed to like the idea.

:01:36.:01:37.

Pensions could be treated like Isas, you pay in from taxed income

:01:38.:01:42.

and it is tax free when you take it out.

:01:43.:01:46.

Treasury sources say that won't happen at the coming Budget,

:01:47.:01:52.

a move welcomed by a former Lib Dem Pensions Minister.

:01:53.:01:55.

It's very good news the Chancellor has dropped his pension's Isa idea,

:01:56.:01:58.

where you tax people's money as they go into a pension,

:01:59.:02:01.

because I simply don't think people would have trusted politicians

:02:02.:02:03.

of future generations not to tax them for a second time.

:02:04.:02:07.

Very bad news, though, to those who think an existing

:02:08.:02:09.

pension system that gives the biggest tax breaks to some

:02:10.:02:12.

It's a missed opportunity to try and make the pension system work

:02:13.:02:18.

better for people like the self-employed and people on zero

:02:19.:02:21.

hours contracts and others facing economic uncertainty.

:02:22.:02:26.

Well, Conservatives want to clear the decks

:02:27.:02:32.

And some of his MPs weren't keen on the pension idea.

:02:33.:02:40.

I think that had there been significant changes in the pensions

:02:41.:02:43.

schemes that would have disadvantaged some people,

:02:44.:02:46.

it's inevitable as MPs across the whole House we would have

:02:47.:02:49.

There is the important point that what we don't want to do is having

:02:50.:02:58.

two very large, complicated arguments at the same time

:02:59.:03:01.

when we have this very important referendum coming up in June.

:03:02.:03:03.

Which means with just a week-and-a-half to go before

:03:04.:03:06.

he does this again, he will need a different big idea to take

:03:07.:03:09.

The Director-General of the British Chamber of Commerce has been

:03:10.:03:32.

suspended. The organisation which represents thousands of businesses

:03:33.:03:35.

had said it would not campaign for either side.

:03:36.:03:40.

Ross Hawkins joins us live now. There's breaking news on this

:03:41.:03:45.

tonight. What's the latest. Within the last few minutes, the Mayor of

:03:46.:03:48.

London has said this news is scandalous. He suggested that John

:03:49.:03:53.

Longworth had to stand aside because he was crushed by the agents in the

:03:54.:04:00.

mayor's word of project fear. Earlier in the deer, Bernard --

:04:01.:04:04.

earlier in the day, Bernard Genkin asked if Downing Street had any role

:04:05.:04:09.

to play in this. Downing Street absolutely rejects any suggestion

:04:10.:04:13.

that they put pressure on him to resign or step aside, as I

:04:14.:04:16.

understand, they'll be saying they were surprised as anyone that this

:04:17.:04:19.

has happened. But this matters not, because this man is fantastically

:04:20.:04:23.

well known. He's in no sense a household name. He's not even a

:04:24.:04:26.

politician. But it matters because it plays into one of the central

:04:27.:04:31.

claims of the leave campaign, which is, in effect, they are fighting the

:04:32.:04:37.

establishment. That any dissent will be squeezed out by more powerful

:04:38.:04:40.

forces and for that reason, I think you'll hear a lot more about this

:04:41.:04:43.

man and his position in the coming 24 hours.

:04:44.:04:45.

Ross, thanks very much indeed. In Turkey, the government

:04:46.:04:48.

has seized control of There've been protests

:04:49.:04:50.

against the move, and police have fired plastic bullets, tear gas

:04:51.:04:54.

and water cannon at demonstrators. Editors of Zaman newspaper say

:04:55.:04:57.

the government's move to take it over is a dark day for Turkish

:04:58.:05:00.

democracy. From Turkey, our correspondent

:05:01.:05:02.

Mark Lowen reports. This is what happens in Turkey, if

:05:03.:05:15.

you want a newspaper to stay open. The full force of the state sent in

:05:16.:05:22.

to crush protests. They had tried to stop Zaman, Turkey's biggest

:05:23.:05:25.

newspaper, from being taken over, but in vain. Rubber bullets were

:05:26.:05:34.

fired. The tear gas overwhelming. They tried last night to resist

:05:35.:05:38.

police, forcing their way into the building. That too was futile. There

:05:39.:05:50.

was no room for debate. As Zaman editors arrived, defiant, supporters

:05:51.:05:53.

rallied. But shortly after, a government team came by, fired the

:05:54.:05:57.

management, cut the internet signal and deleted the archive. Our last

three, four years, that anyone who is speaking against the government

:06:06.:06:12.

policies is facing either court cases or prison or such control by

:06:13.:06:18.

the government. I think this is a dark period for our country, for our

:06:19.:06:23.

democracy. Zaman was targeted because of links to an ally turned

:06:24.:06:30.

arch foe of President Erdogan accused of leaking phone calls which

:06:31.:06:33.

apparently implicated Mr Erdogan in corruption. The government called it

a coup and laboured his followers terrorists. Zaman is the latest and

:06:53.:06:56.

:06:57.:07:02.

help with the refugee crisis. So free screpgs is further --

:07:03.:07:07.

expression is further eroded. The final front page of Zaman simply
