Ministers have dismissed reports in several of today's papers

that the Culture Secretary John Whittingdale wants to stop

the BBC scheduling its top rated programmes,

including Strictly Come Dancing, at the same time as those of ITV

David, a number of papers have reported this this morning,

yet Mr Whittingdale's department have dismissed it.

There is a long-running dispute about clashing schedules, aggressive

ratings- grabbing by the BBC. ITV for instance not happy that

sometimes there is an overlap between the X factor and Strictly

Come Dancing. John Wooding gave himself expressed concern about the

ten o'clock news, with both ITV and the BBC's scheduling their main

evening bulletins at the same time. However they are not suggesting that

the government would be involved in a scheduling and content of the BBC.

However there is a suggestion in many of the papers today that the

new regulator, we've got a White Paper from the government coming up

in a week two, suggesting that Ofcom, which will be taking over the

regulation of the BBC might be about to adjudicate in some circumstances

if there are these clashes. However Labour says this looks like

meddling. They are upset about this. And the BBC says it is deeply

concerned if this actually happens. But the big problem

about all of this is, how would you prove it? How would you prove ITV

had suffered there was a complaint? The most recent reports looked at

entertainment and, clashes and this was a government report and it has

concluded that, at most, there was a 1% dip in ITV's audience, barely

The Scottish victim of the fatal helicopter crash in Norway

Yes, welcome to what is a rather soggy Old Trafford but nothing can
