Clamp down in Turkey as its President says the country's

:00:00.:00:00.

under control after last night's attempted coup.

:00:00.:00:08.

Thousands of soldiers and judges are detained as he says anyone

:00:09.:00:14.

Tonight, huge crowds take to the streets

:00:15.:00:28.

of the President after the violence which left more than 250 dead.

:00:29.:00:40.

Three days of mourning for the victims of

:00:41.:00:43.

And, in golf Sweden's Henrik Stenson leads by one shot after day three

:00:44.:00:46.

Turkey's President Erdogan has greeted his supporters outside

:00:47.:01:11.

the Turkish parliament less than a day after a coup

:01:12.:01:14.

Today, the country's Prime Minister described it as a black stain

:01:15.:01:20.

Binali Yildirim said the country was now under control and said

:01:21.:01:28.

nearly 3,000 soldiers and over 2,000 judges had been arrested.

:01:29.:01:33.

Officials say 265 people, many of them civilians, were killed

:01:34.:01:35.

It's estimated there are currently 50,000 Britons on holiday in Turkey.

:01:36.:01:42.

Our correspondent Katy Watson reports from Istanbul.

:01:43.:01:53.

Right in the centre of Istanbul and you can see it's a very different at

:01:54.:01:58.

miss fear tonight to what we saw last night. People here are coming

:01:59.:02:04.

in their droves to support the President and, of course, this has

:02:05.:02:09.

been a 24-hours and a long 24 hours and a long day of developments.

:02:10.:02:15.

Less than 12 hours after the attempted coup began, soldiers

:02:16.:02:18.

surrendered, walking from tanks with their hands above their heads.

:02:19.:02:26.

Equipment abandoned in the chaos. Last night, the parliament building

:02:27.:02:31.

in Ankara became the main point of the violence. The country's

:02:32.:02:35.

President took to video messages on local television urging people to

:02:36.:02:37.

come out on to the streets to oppose what was happening.

:02:38.:02:46.

And so they did, after soldiers tried to take over CNN Turk

:02:47.:02:50.

supporters stormed the building and effectively came to their rescue.

:02:51.:02:55.

The only thing that saved us from serious incident was that the police

:02:56.:03:01.

were standing in between them, like a buffer zone. And at the end

:03:02.:03:07.

ultimately the police disarmed the soldiers and arrested them and saved

:03:08.:03:11.

them from a possible sort of Lynching.

:03:12.:03:19.

On one bridge in Istanbul rebel soldiers stood firm against

:03:20.:03:24.

protesters loyal to Erdogan. Some climbed on the tanks grabbing guns

:03:25.:03:27.

from soldiers' hands. This morning, the bridge was reopened. Reminders

:03:28.:03:31.

of last night's action removed from sight.

:03:32.:03:37.

The Prime Minister condemned the actions.

:03:38.:03:41.

TRANSLATION: What happened on the night of 15th July is a black stain

:03:42.:03:46.

on Turkish democracy. The people who attacked the civilians with the

:03:47.:03:51.

bombs, tanks, planes and helicopters of the state are worse than the PKK

:03:52.:03:56.

terrorists. Erdogan came out and addressed the

:03:57.:04:02.

crowds amid mass arrest ofs soldiers and the dismissal of more than 2,000

:04:03.:04:05.

judges in a cleanup after the attempted coup.

:04:06.:04:11.

They can't destroy this country, said this supporter, they can't

:04:12.:04:15.

split us up, echoing sentiments of thousands of others in the crowd.

:04:16.:04:18.

The Government this evening once again repeated calls for people to

:04:19.:04:22.

come out on the streets in protest, to ward off any remaining threat of

:04:23.:04:26.

the coup. You can see just how many people have heeded that advice here

:04:27.:04:31.

in Istanbul's square. Despite the celebratory atmosphere there is a

:04:32.:04:34.

feeling of uncertainty about what's to come in the next few days.

:04:35.:04:41.

More than 2.5 million Brits visit Turkey every year. Those currently

:04:42.:04:44.

in the country have been told to stay indoors. The new Foreign

:04:45.:04:48.

Secretary said the UK remains very concerned about the situation.

:04:49.:04:53.

They're working very hard, as you can imagine, to do the best for the

:04:54.:04:57.

many Brits who are there and many people there on holiday and they

:04:58.:05:01.

should follow the travel advice. Meanwhile, flights in and out of the

:05:02.:05:07.

country are still chaotic. Some have been cancelled, others diverted

:05:08.:05:15.

until the situation is clear. As you can hear probably the crowds are

:05:16.:05:18.

chanting anthems in support of Erdogan. Normally crowds this big

:05:19.:05:22.

are not allowed in this square. There is a lot of tight security but

:05:23.:05:25.

obviously they're making exceptions for a very supportive crowd.

:05:26.:05:29.

Nevertheless, the President has warned that people shouldn't be

:05:30.:05:32.

complacent, they should keep strong and keep fighting for the rest of

:05:33.:05:34.

the week. Thank you. Political leaders from around

:05:35.:05:39.

the world have condemned the attempt to oust the democratically elected

Government in Turkey. They have also called for calm

of being behind the coup, something he denies, as our Middle East editor

:05:51.:05:53.

Jeremy Bowen reports. In the aftermath of the attempted

:05:54.:05:59.

coup it is unlikely that President Erdogan will be able

:06:00.:06:01.

to heal the divisions in Turkey. That's because his own policies have

:06:02.:06:04.

caused many of them. In rally after rally,

when he will reflect on some of the reasons why this kind

many shrines that have sprung up along the waterfront here in memory

of those who died. Tonight the interior ministry is calling on all

:09:31.:09:34.

patriotic citizens to become reservists to help boost the

:09:35.:09:39.

country's security. Five people have been arrested in the ongoing

:09:40.:09:42.

investigation. Islamic State are now claiming that the man responsible

:09:43.:09:45.

for all this, for all the pain, is actually one of them.

:09:46.:09:50.

With the first report tonight here's our correspondent Lucy Williamson.

:09:51.:09:57.

What makes a local man turn on his community and kill?

:09:58.:10:00.

This is where Mohamed Bouhlel planned his attack.

:10:01.:10:01.

This quiet block of flats on the outskirts of Nice.

:10:02.:10:04.

A blue patterened towel still hanging from the railing.

:10:05.:10:06.

Inside a neighbour showed us where he lived, alone,

:10:07.:10:09.

French officials say he was probably radicalised,

:10:10.:10:14.

but Jasmine told us he'd shown no sign of it.

:10:15.:10:22.

TRANSLATION: Not at all. He drank alcohol.

:10:23.:10:24.

I saw him during Ramadan, with a young woman cuddling him.

:10:25.:10:27.

Jasmine's 14-year-old daughter rang her from the promenade

:10:28.:10:30.

on Thursday, weeping terrified into the phone,

:10:31.:10:33.

not knowing that she was running from the man who lived upstairs.

:10:34.:10:41.

The promenade has now reopened and the brutal reminders

:10:42.:10:44.

of what happened are fading under the buzz of normal life.

:10:45.:10:51.

But this attack left France with some uncomfortable questions,

:10:52.:10:53.

Committed jihadists, or just isolated, angry residents

:10:54.:10:57.

12 years ago Mohamed Bouhlel saw this psychiatrist in Tunisia.

:10:58.:11:06.

The doctor told us his patient had psychotic tendencies,

:11:07.:11:08.

but nothing to trigger an attack like this.

:11:09.:11:15.

TRANSLATION: Back then he was violent towards his family

:11:16.:11:17.

but it's impossible to imagine that he could carry out such

:11:18.:11:19.

I am sure that in the past 12 years something else has happened

:11:20.:11:25.

Police are questioning five people, and so-called Islamic state has

:11:26.:11:32.

claimed responsibility for the attack, but France's

:11:33.:11:37.

Interior Minister says this appears to be a new,

:11:38.:11:41.

much looser kind of affiliation, much harder for the

:11:42.:11:43.

And with France's security forces exhausted, he's calling

:11:44.:11:49.

He said 12,000 reserve volunteers would help police France's borders

:11:50.:11:57.

over the summer and he called on all willing French patriots

:11:58.:12:01.

France's leaders say the country's values are the target.

:12:02.:12:08.

Security, liberty, brotherhood - how to honour them all?

:12:09.:12:18.

Lucy Williamson, BBC News, Nice. More than 50 people including five

:12:19.:12:26.

children are still ill in hospital after the attacks. It's thought

:12:27.:12:30.

around ten children and teenagers died following the attack by that

:12:31.:12:34.

lorry. But many, many more have been injured or traumatised. One thing

:12:35.:12:39.

you do notice are the scores and scores of families that are turning

:12:40.:12:43.

up to shrines like this, leaving flowers and candles and messages.

:12:44.:12:47.

There are so many mothers and fathers that are bringing along

:12:48.:12:49.

their own kids in memory of those who died.

:12:50.:12:55.

A devoted mother, a victim of the Bastille Day attack.

:12:56.:12:57.

She leaves behind a family consumed with grief, including

:12:58.:13:02.

She was killed trying to save the little one,

:13:03.:13:08.

he says, she pulled him towards her but was hit

:13:09.:13:10.

She died in ten minutes on the way to hospital.

:13:11.:13:19.

The two boys, now motherless, are traumatised.

:13:20.:13:23.

Many families take their children to the shrines to pay their respects.

:13:24.:13:27.

It's a harrowing detail of the attack that the killer

:13:28.:13:29.

could see that he was hitting youngsters -

:13:30.:13:32.

Five children are still fighting for their lives in hospital.

:13:33.:13:39.

It is, of course, the psychological trauma of the terrible events

:13:40.:13:41.

of Bastille night that will be difficult to heal.

:13:42.:13:43.

For those children who survived, the work begins now to stop

:13:44.:13:46.

Marina is 13 and just behind is her mother.

:13:47.:13:55.

They survived the attack but are paying a price.

:13:56.:14:05.

We are scared and Marina doesn't speak much now.

:14:06.:14:09.

TRANSLATION: All we did was hold each other saying we're alive.

:14:10.:14:12.

All those poor people, we have to live for them

:14:13.:14:14.

Marina and her mum are receiving counselling.

:14:15.:14:19.

Here's another family shaken by the attack.

:14:20.:14:26.

Clare from eastern France flew into Nice a day later.

:14:27.:14:29.

She's on holiday but the tragedy is a lesson in life for her daughter

:14:30.:14:32.

They must understand that our world is changing.

:14:33.:14:35.

I hope that it will change for the best, but it is important

:14:36.:14:39.

for them to be here to know that their world is changing

:14:40.:14:43.

Bastille Day will always represent the moment the people

:14:44.:14:48.

of France won their freedom, but for some it will now also

:14:49.:14:51.

represent, because of the murderous actions of one man, fear

:14:52.:14:55.

Rest in peace, the simple message for the dead from this child.

:14:56.:15:10.

Just to put this into perspective, days of national mourning are

:15:11.:15:17.

actually quite rare in France. There have only been seven declarations by

:15:18.:15:22.

Presidents since the 1950s and three of them have been in the last 18

:15:23.:15:27.

months, that gives you a sense of just how devastating recent times

:15:28.:15:30.

have been for this country with terror attacks. With that, it's back

:15:31.:15:33.

to you, Kate. Thank you.

:15:34.:15:37.

More from Nice and Turkey throughout the evening on the BBC News channel,

:15:38.:15:41.

of course. Now we turn to sport. We start with The Open.

:15:42.:15:47.

Golf's 145th Open Championship is set for a fascinating final round.

:15:48.:15:51.

Today's tussle between Henrik Stenson of Sweden

:15:52.:15:53.

and the five-time Major winner Phil Mickelson ended with Stenson

:15:54.:15:56.

top of the leaderboard but only by one shot.

:15:57.:15:58.

It's known as moving day in golf. The frantic jostling for contention

:15:59.:16:09.

ahead of the final round. It was Henrik Stenson that rolled his way

:16:10.:16:15.

to the top. Oh, release! While he engaged in an absorbing dual with

:16:16.:16:18.

Phil Mickelson, the rest trailed in their wake. Not least Rory McIlroy,

:16:19.:16:24.

how is this for frustration? While his hopes snapped in two,

:16:25.:16:29.

others had rather more fun. Andrew Johnston is becoming something of a

:16:30.:16:33.

cult hero here and this is why. Go on, get in there, my son!

:16:34.:16:38.

The man nicknamed Beef heading the British challenge. But it is a

:16:39.:16:43.

distant one. On the final hole Mickelson ensured he will be one

:16:44.:16:48.

shot behind his Swede shall rival. Surely no one else can stop them?

:16:49.:16:54.

The Open it seems is now a two-way tussle, Stenson and Mickelson

:16:55.:16:58.

heading for a final day showdown. Andy swis, BBC News, Troon.

:16:59.:17:01.

Cricket, and England face a tough task if they're to beat Pakistan

:17:02.:17:04.

Pakistan have a lead of 281 going in to day four.

:17:05.:17:08.

While England's Chris Woakes provided their highlight, taking 11

:17:09.:17:10.

Patched nicely in the Test, why wouldn't Pakistan get a photo? Their

:17:11.:17:19.

picture would soon improve even further. England's first innings

:17:20.:17:25.

didn't develop much further. So Pakistan had the protection of runs

:17:26.:17:29.

in hand. 67 ahead before they batted again and they knew the more chasing

:17:30.:17:33.

England did now the more they would have to do in their final innings.

:17:34.:17:39.

Chris Woakes remained patient, confident wickets would come,

:17:40.:17:43.

eventually. Ali was his second, England's third. Things which should

:17:44.:17:49.

remain grounded took flight. Pakistan's captain scored a

:17:50.:17:53.

disciplined century on Thursday. And yet couldn't resist soaring, then

:17:54.:17:57.

falling. If you could get it right, then there were runs to be.

:17:58.:18:02.

Pakistan's lead went past 250. More than solid on a pitch which is

:18:03.:18:06.

becoming less predictable. England have hope because of Woakes. Through

:18:07.:18:11.

brilliance and persistence he kept Pakistan in check. 11 wickets in the

:18:12.:18:16.

match, down to him. But England know when they bat tomorrow they must

:18:17.:18:19.

face the spin of Shah again. The man on the left has six wickets already

:18:20.:18:23.

and is smiling for a reason. Patrick Gearey, BBC News.

:18:24.:18:27.

and Chris Froome retained the overall lead.

:18:28.:18:32.

The sprint finish gave Cavendish, on the left, his fourth stage win

:18:33.:18:35.

of this year's race and the 30th of his career.

:18:36.:18:37.

And defending Davis Cup tennis champions Great Britain have a 2-1

:18:38.:18:40.

quarter-final lead over Serbia with two matches remaining.

:18:41.:18:45.

That's all from me and the team here, good night.

:18:46.:18:52.
