Police say the teenager who killed nine people in Munich yesterday

:00:21.:00:24.

He's been named locally as 18-year-old David Sonboly,

:00:25.:00:29.

a German-Iranian student who had psychiatric problems.

:00:30.:00:33.

A search of his home found literature about mass killings.

:00:34.:00:36.

Officials say there is no evidence to link him with extremist groups

:00:37.:00:39.

Sonboly was armed with a 9mm pistol and later shot himself.

:00:40.:00:46.

Live now to Munich and our Chief Correspondent, Gavin Hewitt.

:00:47.:00:56.

For some time, Germany has feared that it, too could face a tax from

:00:57.:01:03.

groups with links to the so-called Islamic State. That didn't happen

:01:04.:01:08.

here. Instead, an 18-year-old who was highly disturbed and who liked

:01:09.:01:11.

watching violent videos brought terror to the streets of Munich.

:01:12.:01:14.

It was the third attack on civilians in Europe in eight days.

:01:15.:01:17.

A gunman killing nine people at random Munich shopping centre.

:01:18.:01:22.

It has left the country wondering where was safe, said Angela Merkel.

:01:23.:01:27.

The gunman was caught on camera opening fire.

:01:28.:01:30.

He has been named as David Ali Sonboly,

:01:31.:01:39.

The 18-year-old student had battled depression.

:01:40.:01:51.

Police found evidence that he had researched other

:01:52.:01:55.

attacks, including the killings in Norway five years ago

:01:56.:01:57.

by right wing extremist Anders Breivik.

:01:58.:02:01.

But the police say there were no indications so far the killings

:02:02.:02:04.

All the indications are that he was acting on his own,

:02:05.:02:07.

a sole perpetrator, and we believe there are no links

:02:08.:02:10.

After a recent attack here in Germany and elsewhere in Europe,

:02:11.:02:13.

the federal Government has been very keen to establish motive,

:02:14.:02:16.

to reach that point where it can say with confidence that the gunman had

:02:17.:02:19.

no links with Islamists or other militant groups.

:02:20.:02:26.

One of those who witnessed the shooting said the gunman seemed

:02:27.:02:28.

I thought he might've taken drugs or was drunk.

:02:29.:02:35.

I felt he was a complete amateur, he was definitely

:02:36.:02:37.

Police are investigating whether the gunman tried to lure

:02:38.:02:42.

young people to McDonald's by offering them free food

:02:43.:02:44.

The Government said the horror had been made much more difficult

:02:45.:03:00.

because there had been such terrible news from elsewhere in Europe

:03:01.:03:03.

We are in deep and profound mourning for those who will never return

:03:04.:03:07.

The families, siblings, friends, to whom everything will be void

:03:08.:03:13.

On the streets of Munich today, there was a sense of insecurity.

:03:14.:03:21.

I waited for an attack like that in Germany,

:03:22.:03:31.

but it didn't expected that it would happen in Munich.

:03:32.:03:36.

The German Chancellor described the attack as a night of horror.

:03:37.:03:44.

Over 2000 police deployed, a city's transport system shutdown

:03:45.:03:46.

The victims of yesterday's attack were predominantly young

:03:47.:03:52.

Three of the nine were Turkish, three were Kosovan,

:03:53.:03:55.

Chris Buckler's report on the victims contains some

:03:56.:03:59.

In Munich, many feel this shooting was an attack on a generation.

:04:00.:04:10.

The majority of those being mourned were teenagers,

:04:11.:04:13.

There are people here in need of support.

:04:14.:04:23.

Among them, Huseyin, who helped one of the young

:04:24.:04:27.

TRANSLATION: I was shocked, I was scared.

:04:28.:04:37.

And then I lay down here, right next to him.

:04:38.:04:41.

And then he looked me in the eyes, took one deep breath and died.

:04:42.:04:47.

I'll never be able to forget what happened.

:04:48.:04:54.

That teenager's friends brought pictures of him to place

:04:55.:04:56.

at the spot where he died, determined that he would be

:04:57.:05:00.

remembered in the street where they used to meet.

:05:01.:05:05.

It's insane, one of them says - why were young people

:05:06.:05:08.

Detectives are still struggling to try to understand why these

:05:09.:05:15.

murders were committed, but those questions of motivation

:05:16.:05:18.

are dwarfed here in Munich by simple, raw emotion.

:05:19.:05:26.

Alongside the grief, there is also a sense

:05:27.:05:28.

of vulnerability after this latest attack in Europe.

:05:29.:05:32.

The so-called Islamic State group says it carried out an attack

:05:33.:05:40.

on a protest march in the Afghan capital, Kabul, killing

:05:41.:05:43.

A further 200 people were also injured as a result

:05:44.:05:48.

The Taliban have condemned the attack.

:05:49.:05:55.

Holidaymakers trying to cross the Channel by ferry at Dover have

:05:56.:05:57.

faced a day of chaos because of severe delays.

:05:58.:06:01.

The port authority says motorists can expect delays of up to ten hours

:06:02.:06:04.

on the roads around Dover, because of extra French

:06:05.:06:06.

Stranded for hours, many were stuck in their cars overnight,

:06:07.:06:15.

some without food and water, not knowing when their

:06:16.:06:17.

The woman at the filling station told us that there

:06:18.:06:23.

is a six-hour delay right now, and so we decided to just go

:06:24.:06:27.

through to the ferry and look where we can get on.

:06:28.:06:31.

The motorway is full, full, full, people are waiting in the sunshine

:06:32.:06:34.

Where are the police controlling the traffic?

:06:35.:06:41.

I would like to see some traffic control.

:06:42.:06:44.

The reason for the delays was said to be heightened French security

:06:45.:06:48.

The Port of Dover said the French security booths were

:06:49.:06:52.

But the local MP said this didn't come as a surprise

:06:53.:06:58.

and the government and other agencies should have

:06:59.:07:01.

I don't think it's good enough to try to blame the French

:07:02.:07:06.

and French border controls following the Nice atrocities.

:07:07.:07:09.

It's totally understandable they should be concerned.

:07:10.:07:12.

What needed to happen, they should've planned ahead,

:07:13.:07:14.

They didn't, they weren't and that's why these people

:07:15.:07:18.

And once you arrive here in Dover, there's even more traffic

:07:19.:07:22.

and congestion coming from all directions.

:07:23.:07:26.

And they are all heading one way, towards the port just behind me.

:07:27.:07:30.

Some people very concerned they may not make their ferry this evening.

:07:31.:07:35.

In a bid to reduce disruption, Highways England advised people

:07:36.:07:38.

to allow extra time for journeys and use alternative routes.

:07:39.:07:48.

Two people have been seriously injured and another 13 hurt

:07:49.:07:51.

after a coach carrying a group of teenage pupils from a school in

:07:52.:07:54.

The bus went into a ditch at Lons-le-Saunier.

:07:55.:08:00.

It was heading towards Italy with almost 50 people on board.

:08:01.:08:03.

A trip to Italy ended here, on the side of a motorway in France.

:08:04.:08:11.

Of the 42 teenagers from Bourneside school in Cheltenham,

:08:12.:08:15.

two are now in a serious condition in hospital,

:08:16.:08:18.

13 more are being treated for minor injuries.

:08:19.:08:22.

French police say no other vehicle was involved in the accident.

:08:23.:08:26.

It seems the bus just veered off the motorway and ended up

:08:27.:08:29.

The investigation is still ongoing, but the speculation is the driver

:08:30.:08:36.

We do suppose the driver may have fallen asleep.

:08:37.:08:44.

He was within his permitted working hours.

:08:45.:08:46.

He was driving within the speed limit, doing under 100

:08:47.:08:49.

Bourneside School has issued a statement saying it is deeply

:08:50.:08:55.

The parents of the teenagers involved have been involved.

:08:56.:09:06.

Those pupils who were not injured are expected to return

:09:07.:09:14.

Chris Froome is set to become the first Briton to win the Tour

:09:15.:09:20.

de France three times, after safely finishing

:09:21.:09:22.

the penultimate stage of the race today.

:09:23.:09:24.

He's maintained a comfortable lead over his nearest rival.

:09:25.:09:28.

With tradition dictating he won't be challenged on the final stage

:09:29.:09:32.

into Paris tomorrow, he's set to add to the titles he won

:09:33.:09:34.

A number of Britain's top track and field athletes have been

:09:35.:09:41.

competing ahead of Rio at the London

:09:42.:09:43.

Mo Farah won the 5000 metres in the fastest time this year,

:09:44.:09:47.

breaking the 13-minute barrier on the same track where he won both

:09:48.:09:51.

the 5000 and 10,000 metre titles at the 2012 Olympics.

:09:52.:09:59.
