The prime minister of Iceland has resigned after allegations | :00:07. | :00:14.
he concealed millions of dollars worth of investments | :00:15. | :00:16.
There's been massive protests against him in Rejkjavik. | :00:17. | :00:25.
We'll also look at how the law firm at the centre of the revelations, | :00:26. | :00:28.
Mossack Fonseca, apparently worked with clients who were subject | :00:29. | :00:31.
The Labour Party wants an investigation of all UK nationals | :00:32. | :00:53.
involved in the allegations. The first US primary | :00:54. | :01:02.
is taking in the allegations. place right now since Donald Trump's | :01:03. | :01:06.
controversial comments on abortion. We'll hear from our | :01:07. | :01:09.
correspondent in Wisconsin. Also, we'll find out | :01:10. | :01:11.
about Facebook's new product which is aimed at helping the blind | :01:12. | :01:12.
and visually impaired. The leak of the financial | :01:13. | :01:15.
arrangements of the world's rich and powerful has | :01:16. | :01:17.
claimed its first big casualty. The Prime Minister of Iceland has | :01:18. | :01:19.
resigned after allegations he concealed millions of dollars | :01:20. | :01:21.
worth of investments in an offshore company were first raised | :01:22. | :01:24.
in the Panama Papers. It comes after huge protests outside | :01:25. | :01:26.
parliament last night. The Prime Minister of Iceland | :01:27. | :01:28.
is the first major casualty of the massive Panama Papers leaks | :01:29. | :01:37.
which have shone such a powerful spotlight on the secret world | :01:38. | :01:40.
of offshore finance. Sigmundur Gunnlaugsson was accused | :01:41. | :01:45.
of concealing millions of dollars' He insists he has | :01:46. | :01:48.
done nothing wrong. But huge crowds in front | :01:49. | :01:55.
of the Icelandic parliament yesterday disagreed, | :01:56. | :01:57.
some estimates say one tenth of the population | :01:58. | :01:59.
took to the streets. This is where the global scandal | :02:00. | :02:04.
originated. The Panama-based law | :02:05. | :02:06.
firm, Mossack Fonseca. 11 million documents held | :02:07. | :02:11.
here were passed to a German newspaper which shared them | :02:12. | :02:13.
with over 100 media organisations, They show how the company helped | :02:14. | :02:15.
clients launder money and evade tax. Mossack Fonseca says it | :02:16. | :02:21.
has never been charged When the Prime Minister sat down | :02:22. | :02:25.
for a series of interviews he was challenged about allegations | :02:26. | :02:33.
that he was involved Now he has walked from high office | :02:34. | :02:35.
and tonight the journalist who got the interview told the BBC | :02:36. | :02:45.
he is stunned and said the crisis The population of Iceland | :02:46. | :02:48.
is around 330,000. So far we have found around 800 | :02:49. | :02:55.
offshore companies linked I think we are setting | :02:56. | :02:57.
another world record here! Tonight, Iceland's president | :02:58. | :03:15.
rejected the prime minister's calls for a snap election, | :03:16. | :03:17.
saying he needs to consult Mr Gunnlaugsson might be going, | :03:18. | :03:19.
but the government of Iceland is in turmoil as the fallout | :03:20. | :03:23.
from the Panama Papers spreads. As you saw there, thousands of | :03:24. | :03:44.
people protested in Iceland. A huge number considering that there are | :03:45. | :03:49.
only 330,000 people in the country. Having Hewitt is in Reykjavik. | :03:50. | :03:55.
The mood here yesterday when around 20,000 people gathered around here | :03:56. | :03:58.
was that the Prime Minister had to go. They simply did not believe him | :03:59. | :04:04.
and they also felt he had an undeclared interest in his wife's | :04:05. | :04:11.
offshore company. He said he had not broken any Icelandic laws, but | :04:12. | :04:16.
certainly the mood here was that there was a failure of transparency | :04:17. | :04:20.
and also a conflict of interest, and I think to understand the mood here | :04:21. | :04:24.
you have to go back to 2008 when three banks collapsed and invaded | :04:25. | :04:34.
the economy. Therefore the idea they have a Prime Minister who is try to | :04:35. | :04:38.
sort that out, but had a connection with the offshore wells, they were | :04:39. | :04:42.
not prepared to accept there. As we talk, they are banging the fence and | :04:43. | :04:48.
banging drums. The big picture here is the difference between 2008 and | :04:49. | :04:54.
the financial crisis and the mood amongst people not just in Iceland, | :04:55. | :04:59.
but elsewhere. I think there is this feeling that very powerful people, | :05:00. | :05:07.
the elite, have money in offshore havens and I think there is far less | :05:08. | :05:10.
tolerance for that. Certainly the mood here is they want a clean | :05:11. | :05:13.
government. Meanwhile the law firm in Panama | :05:14. | :05:24.
at the heart of this leak One of the companies founders told | :05:25. | :05:26.
the Financial Times, "I don't expect this to lead to one | :05:27. | :05:30.
single legal case." And, "I guarantee there is more | :05:31. | :05:32.
dirty money in New York and London The latest revelations show | :05:33. | :05:35.
that Mossack Fonseca, the Panamanian law firm at the heart | :05:36. | :05:38.
of the leak, kept clients who were The firm worked with 33 individuals | :05:39. | :05:42.
or companies who, at some point, The Caribbean hideaway. This is the | :05:43. | :06:08.
company that helps people. This is the cousin of the Syrian President | :06:09. | :06:18.
Assad. He has helped to hide the wealth of the family inside and | :06:19. | :06:23.
outside Syria. His mobile phone company became the focus jeering the | :06:24. | :06:34.
start of the Syrian war. Mossack Fonseca realise they have six | :06:35. | :06:39.
companies with him, but they carried on working with him. He was also a | :06:40. | :06:46.
client of HSBC bank raced here in Canary Wharf. We obtained an | :06:47. | :06:50.
internal document that showed the discussions that took place once it | :06:51. | :06:55.
was discovered that he had been sanctioned. In 2011 ahead of | :06:56. | :07:02.
compliance Mossack Fonseca sense this to her bosses. | :07:03. | :07:13.
It prompted this reply from Mossad Fonseca's partner. | :07:14. | :07:32.
Cry-macro as soon as you are aware that a Dillon an account holder is | :07:33. | :07:40.
subject to the tensions, that cut should be frozen. From there on you | :07:41. | :07:44.
will be discussing with the authorities whether you keep the | :07:45. | :07:50.
accounts, close the account or not. Mustaq Fonseca resigned as his | :07:51. | :08:00.
agents, but he was not one of. Their clients included companies in North | :08:01. | :08:16.
Korea. There was also a company owned by the former Iranians | :08:17. | :08:21.
president. Also the son of the former Egyptian president, convicted | :08:22. | :08:26.
for stealing state funds, was a client for three years after he was | :08:27. | :08:30.
sanctioned. HSBC said they work closely with the authorities to | :08:31. | :08:35.
fight financial crime and implement sanctions. Mossack Fonseca said they | :08:36. | :08:38.
have never knowingly allowed the use of their companies by individuals | :08:39. | :08:43.
having any involvement with North Korea, Syria or Iran and they have | :08:44. | :08:51.
the own procedures in place to identify people. But with the 11 | :08:52. | :08:55.
million leaked documents, there are more revelations to come and further | :08:56. | :08:58.
questions about the secrecy of offshore finance. | :08:59. | :09:01.
President Obama has commented on the Panama | :09:02. | :09:02.
He said they show that tax avoidance is a big global problem. | :09:03. | :09:07.
He leader of the opposition Labour party here in Britain, | :09:08. | :09:10.
Jeremy Corbyn has also said more needs to be done to clamp down on UK | :09:11. | :09:14.
overseas territories, after it was shown the British | :09:15. | :09:15.
Virgin Islands was far and away the most popular tax haven. | :09:16. | :09:18.
Mr Corbyn says he government should consider imposing "direct rule" | :09:19. | :09:21.
on British overseas territories and dependencies if they do not | :09:22. | :09:23.
The Prime Minister is calling for greater bouncing -- greater | :09:24. | :09:43.
transparency. I own no shares. I have a salary as Prime Minister and | :09:44. | :09:47.
I have some savings, which I get some interest from and I have a | :09:48. | :09:50.
house, which we used to live in which we now let out what we are | :09:51. | :09:55.
living in Downing Street and that is all I have. I have no shares, no | :09:56. | :10:01.
offshore trusts, no offshore funds, nothing like that. That is a clear | :10:02. | :10:06.
description. The second thing I am responsible for is our tax system | :10:07. | :10:11.
and tax policy. No government, no Prime Minister has done more to make | :10:12. | :10:15.
sure we crack down on tax evasion, on aggressive tax avoidance, on | :10:16. | :10:21.
aggressive tax planning, both here in the UK and internationally. | :10:22. | :10:27.
Jeremy Corbyn has also said more needs to be done to clamp down on UK | :10:28. | :10:31.
overseas territories, after it was shown the British | :10:32. | :10:33.
Virgin Islands was far and away the most popular tax haven. | :10:34. | :10:35.
Mr Corbyn says he government should consider imposing "direct rule" | :10:36. | :10:38.
on British overseas territories and dependencies if they do not | :10:39. | :10:40.
Andrew Walker explains more. Encouraging them to be more | :10:41. | :10:57.
cooperative about exchanging tax information. They ultimately have | :10:58. | :11:02.
the power to take over, to use direct wall which was done for | :11:03. | :11:09.
different reasons with other Caribbean territories. In the case | :11:10. | :11:15.
of the British Virgin Islands, the organisation for British financial | :11:16. | :11:19.
development, a forum where tax issues are co-ordinated, has | :11:20. | :11:24.
recently described the British Virgin Islands as now largely | :11:25. | :11:28.
compliant. Its view is that things have improved and many of these | :11:29. | :11:31.
allegations we have been seeing our historic ones. What would be a | :11:32. | :11:37.
legitimate reason for using an offshore accounts, doing the sort of | :11:38. | :11:44.
thing? Well, the obvious legal thing, which is about personal | :11:45. | :11:50.
judgment as well, they offer lower corporate tax rates. Bearing in | :11:51. | :11:54.
mind, that kind of shopping around forward to have your legal | :11:55. | :12:00.
corporation of a business is widely done in Europe, and in the US. In | :12:01. | :12:08.
Delaware and Nevada there are zero taxes collected at state level on | :12:09. | :12:14.
companies. Of course they are attractive places to have your | :12:15. | :12:20.
headquarters. They are the legal reasons, although people may take | :12:21. | :12:25.
the view it is unethical. So why isn't everyone doing it? What is to | :12:26. | :12:31.
stop ordinary people doing it? I can't incorporate myself in the | :12:32. | :12:37.
British Virgin Islands. I've have a salary -- I have a salary here and | :12:38. | :12:42.
pay my taxes here. It is not practically available to | :12:43. | :12:48.
individuals. Coming up on the programme? | :12:49. | :13:11.
Programme, talking pictures to help the visually impaired. | :13:12. | :13:29.
The business secretary is travelling to India to try to secure a buyer | :13:30. | :13:43.
for this still industry. It is important to have these meetings and | :13:44. | :13:46.
discuss what else we can do to take things forward. This meeting I will | :13:47. | :13:51.
be having tomorrow will be with the chairman of the whole Tata group. I | :13:52. | :14:00.
want to get a final agreement on the cells process. It comes that to our | :14:01. | :14:08.
role. I want to make sure that when the documentation is issued, the UK | :14:09. | :14:13.
government understand it has a role and we are well called a native with | :14:14. | :14:16.
Tata. This is Outside Source live | :14:17. | :14:26.
from the BBC newsroom The Icelandic prime minister has | :14:27. | :14:28.
resigned after allegations that he concealed millions | :14:29. | :14:32.
of dollars' worth of investments There had been big protests | :14:33. | :14:34.
in Rejkjavik calling for him to step down since the documents | :14:35. | :14:38.
were revealed as part Let's have a look at what's | :14:39. | :14:40.
being covered elsewhere on the BBC. Judges at the International Criminal | :14:41. | :14:45.
Court have thrown out the case of the Kenyan deputy president | :14:46. | :14:47.
William Ruto and the Both men deny charges of crimes | :14:48. | :14:50.

and Focus on Africa will have much Azerbaijan has agreed a ceasefire | :14:56. | :15:01.

the separatist region of Nagorno-Karabakh, | :15:07. | :15:07.
after four days of fierce fighting. Azerbaijan and Armenia fought | :15:08. | :15:09.
a six-year war over the territory in which thousands were killed | :15:10. | :15:11.
and displaced on both sides. A US Marine Corps dog called Lucca, | :15:12. | :15:14.
who lost her leg on duty, has been awarded a veterans charity | :15:15. | :15:24.

the BBC News app. A new study suggests that a daily | :15:38. | :16:05.
dose of vitamin team can help with your heart. Certainly, it has made a | :16:06. | :16:13.
major step forward in terms of new treatment of people with heart | :16:14. | :16:19.
failure. 1 million people in the UK suffer from this disorder, so it is | :16:20. | :16:23.
important. We did realise six or seven years ago that lots of | :16:24. | :16:26.
patients with heart failure had low vitamin D. There is some scientific | :16:27. | :16:33.
evidence to suggest it could improve cardiac function. We carried out a | :16:34. | :16:38.
long-term study, including people with weak hearts, and gave them fit | :16:39. | :16:43.
in the supplementation and another group see both. We found the cardiac | :16:44. | :16:48.
function improved substantially in patients who were given vitamin D2 | :16:49. | :16:53.
applet. The results of that study have led to a new series of | :16:54. | :17:06.
questions. People are asking whether they can overdose on vitamin deep? | :17:07. | :17:11.
You should not just go out and start taking vitamin Deezer pler and is | :17:12. | :17:15.
anyway. If you have too much vitamin deep, you can get into trouble with | :17:16. | :17:24.
your kidneys. It needs to be done under medical supervision. Defence | :17:25. | :17:46.
spending has increased. Jeremy Howell reports. | :17:47. | :17:49.
Some countries have tried to pare back their defence spending, but due | :17:50. | :18:04.
to conflict across the world, arms... Saudi Arabia's defence | :18:05. | :18:14.
spending increase by 5.7% to $80 billion. This included was in Yemen, | :18:15. | :18:21.
Syria and Iran. But the far east is seeing the biggest increase. China | :18:22. | :18:28.
has hiked its defence spending by 7.4% to $215 billion. If you are | :18:29. | :18:43.
South Korea, Vietnam's, Japan, you name it, the threat is now. It is | :18:44. | :18:49.
not going away. It declares it is going to get stronger and stronger | :18:50. | :18:52.
and you suddenly say, we have two spend money. This increasing global | :18:53. | :18:58.
military spending is a boon to the arms industry. BAE Systems, the | :18:59. | :19:03.
world's largest defence contractors has seen its stock price almost | :19:04. | :19:09.
trebled since 2011. It is a positive development for defence firms, but | :19:10. | :19:13.
at the same time, those dollars are coming from Asia-Pacific. There is | :19:14. | :19:23.
an increasingly competitive environment. They're not having to | :19:24. | :19:33.
just compete with each other, but Asian countries like South Korea. | :19:34. | :19:43.

via Twitter, tell us more. Sport has always been on Twitter. | :20:00. | :20:05.
People are analysing what is going on, following the action through | :20:06. | :20:12.
tweets and hashtags. The anything missing has been the action itself. | :20:13. | :20:18.
This will place the live footage on Twitter. It is a missing piece of | :20:19. | :20:29.
the puzzle for Twitter. It is only... Our technology reporter. | :20:30. | :20:37.
Unfortunately... Sorry, we lost you then. If you could go back ten | :20:38. | :20:42.
seconds or so. I was saying that Twitter went make a huge amount of | :20:43. | :20:46.
money through this because the Avenue revenues will be going to | :20:47. | :20:50.
them, they will be going to the broadcaster showing the NFL, but it | :20:51. | :20:53.
is an interesting move for them and they hope it will drink more users | :20:54. | :20:59.
to the service. Is the thinking that this could turn things around for | :21:00. | :21:05.
Twitter? Yes. Within the last quarter they reported a loss with | :21:06. | :21:13.
fewer people using the service. For a major social network, it is | :21:14. | :21:15.
unheard-of. They are looking at methods to attract more people. | :21:16. | :21:20.
Sports rights is a quick way to do it. If the reports are correct, they | :21:21. | :21:28.
have got the right to less than $10 million which is an incredibly good | :21:29. | :21:30.
deal for Twitter. Thank you. Facebook is launching | :21:31. | :21:36.
a new feature today to help blind It's called Automatic | :21:37. | :21:39.
Alternative Text. Basically it uses a complex | :21:40. | :21:41.
algorithm to tell users Facebook says more than 2 billion | :21:42. | :21:43.
photos are uploaded SWIPE The new technology can | :21:44. | :21:47.
recognise various objects like boats or airplanes, | :21:48. | :21:50.
SWIPE activities like like boats or airplanes, activities | :21:51. | :21:59.
like tennis or swimming, SWIPE | :22:00. | :22:01.
and of course a 'selfie'. Lee Kumutat from BBC | :22:02. | :22:03.
Ouch is with me. What we have had from Facebook is a | :22:04. | :23:11.
status update and it may say photo. If you have lots of friends who post | :23:12. | :23:20.
a lot of photos, you will hear the state is being updated. It feels as | :23:21. | :23:24.
if you are not engaging. And what have Facebook said the | :23:25. | :23:29.
reasons for developing this technology? For those reasons. They | :23:30. | :23:34.
have done some research and discovered that because social media | :23:35. | :23:39.
is becoming more visual, visually impaired people are feeling excluded | :23:40. | :23:43.
from social media and they felt they should do something about it. There | :23:44. | :23:49.
are lots of people who are at the vanguard of developing axis ability | :23:50. | :23:54.
for visually impaired people. You have given it a go. Is it good? Does | :23:55. | :24:00.
it give you enough detail? I have two say when I had my first photo | :24:01. | :24:06.
described, I got a little thrill. It is nice to know there were two | :24:07. | :24:13.
people smiling, so that did leave me feeling a bit more engaged. In the | :24:14. | :24:17.
demo it said something like, we made it. That photo will have people, | :24:18. | :24:25.
they were outdoors, they were wearing sunglasses. There is some | :24:26. | :24:30.
way to go, but it is a real step forward. Twitter launched a similar | :24:31. | :24:36.
thing a couple of weeks ago where people can manually, if you have put | :24:37. | :24:41.
a photo art, people can manually puts alternative text so blind | :24:42. | :24:46.
people will know what their photos are as well. | :24:47. | :25:01.
Now, a mother whose son died in a car accident and donated the heart | :25:02. | :25:16.
to about the person has met the person who received the heart. She | :25:17. | :25:21.
was able to hear her son's heartbeat in the chest of another person. How | :25:22. | :25:33.
does it sound? Really good. It definitely sounds as if it belongs | :25:34. | :25:37.
