Hello, I'm Nuala McGovern, this is Outside Source. | :00:10. | :00:11.
The Rio Olympics Games start later this week. | :00:12. | :00:16.
But the water at some of the venues is still filthy, | :00:17. | :00:19.
Cleaning up the water was one of the key promises | :00:20. | :00:22.
I'm Babita Sharma in Rio, I've been asking the city's mayor | :00:23. | :00:28.
He says there is nothing to worry about. | :00:29. | :00:39.
What you have is some reports saying for example, the beaches in Rio has | :00:40. | :00:47.
bacteria that kills you. All of the population of Rio would be dead for | :00:48. | :00:49.
now if it was true. You've probably heard by now | :00:50. | :00:50.
about the row between Donald Trump and the parents of a Muslim soldier | :00:51. | :00:53.
who died serving Well the BBC have spoken to Mr | :00:54. | :00:55.
and Mrs Khan, I'll play A Russian military helicopter has | :00:56. | :01:00.
been shot down in Syria, Moscow says it was on a | :01:01. | :01:03.
humanitarian mission. And I've got a report to show | :01:04. | :01:09.
you about how the mobile game Pokemon Go has been helping a young | :01:10. | :01:12.
man with autism. Just days before the opening | :01:13. | :01:33.
of the Olympics Games, a new study by the Associated Press | :01:34. | :01:37.
says that Rio's That's not good news | :01:38. | :01:39.
for the 1,400 athletes who take Raw human sewage is the main | :01:40. | :01:45.
problem. The most contaminated points | :01:46. | :01:52.
are the Rodrigo de Freitas Lagoon, where rowing will take place, | :01:53. | :01:55.
and the Gloria Marina, the starting In March last year, sampling | :01:56. | :01:58.
at the Lagoon revealed an astounding 1.73 billion | :01:59. | :02:08.
adenoviruses per litre. That is a family of viruses | :02:09. | :02:13.
that cause infections This June, the readings were lower, | :02:14. | :02:15.
but still high at 248 Compare that to California, | :02:16. | :02:21.
where viral readings in the thousands per litre | :02:22. | :02:28.
are enough to set off alarm bells. Let's get more from | :02:29. | :02:36.
Babita Sharma in Rio. Thank you. It is that report that | :02:37. | :02:51.
many people are focusing on today, it was published in the early hours | :02:52. | :02:56.
of Monday. With just the Olympics starting days away. With all those | :02:57. | :03:01.
concerns about whether or not the waterways are fit for purpose, we | :03:02. | :03:05.
are expecting around 1400 athletes to be taking part in those events | :03:06. | :03:12.
taking place in one of our pay and Lagua where you mentioned, the | :03:13. | :03:18.
canoeing is taking place. -- Guarnabara Bay. Those athletes could | :03:19. | :03:24.
for violently ill according to the Associated Press. It depends who you | :03:25. | :03:27.
speak to. Officials saying that is not the case, they are doing regular | :03:28. | :03:33.
tests, hour by hour, day by day and passing the rules and regulations | :03:34. | :03:37.
required in order for the water to be safe to compete in. That is | :03:38. | :03:41.
something very much in the uppermost of people's mines, is this city | :03:42. | :03:46.
ready to stage its first Olympics in South America? -- people's minds. | :03:47. | :03:54.
The city's, has become the face of these Olympics and I asked him | :03:55. | :03:57.
earlier specifically about the waterways and whether or not he had | :03:58. | :04:01.
concerns ahead of the start of the game on Friday. | :04:02. | :04:04.
Anxious, but things are working pretty well, the venues are ready, | :04:05. | :04:11.
the city is ready, everybody is getting excited. It will be amazing. | :04:12. | :04:16.
Anxious, why? It is not easy to bring such a big event to a city, it | :04:17. | :04:22.
is spread all over the city but it is working well. I am optimistic and | :04:23. | :04:26.
anxious, if I was not anxious things would probably not work out. It is | :04:27. | :04:30.
good to be optimistic because there is a lot of criticism at the moment. | :04:31. | :04:34.
Particularly about the waterways, saying they are just not ready. | :04:35. | :04:39.
Dangerous levels of contamination in Guarnabara Bay and Lagoa. Sailing, | :04:40. | :04:48.
rowing, canoeing. The athletes shouldn't even be there is the | :04:49. | :04:51.
latest we are hearing, what is your assessment? The World Health | :04:52. | :04:56.
Organisation does not say that. You have some reports saying that the | :04:57. | :05:01.
beaches in Rio has bacteria that kills you. But all of the population | :05:02. | :05:04.
of Rio would be dead right now if that was true. What you can see in | :05:05. | :05:10.
Rio is Copacabana beach and everyone in the water. Lots of exaggeration. | :05:11. | :05:13.
We face problems especially in Guarnabara Bay, but it is not an | :05:14. | :05:17.
Olympic problem. Because where the sailing race will be held is the | :05:18. | :05:22.
entrance of Guarnabara Bay, it is pretty clear. Two types of events in | :05:23. | :05:26.
the past two years, it will work properly. There is always | :05:27. | :05:29.
exaggeration. Let me ask you about the Olympic Village and athlete | :05:30. | :05:33.
Village in particular. The Australian athletes who have | :05:34. | :05:36.
travelled a very long way to be here, they complained about toilet | :05:37. | :05:40.
blockages, wiring not being right, there was a fire outbreak in one of | :05:41. | :05:46.
their residences. You said, I can promise you a kangaroo to allay | :05:47. | :05:50.
their fears. Surely that is not the right terminology for somebody in | :05:51. | :05:56.
your position? No, sadly I did not use only that terminology. I know a | :05:57. | :06:02.
bit about diplomacy, we know about people, we want people to feel | :06:03. | :06:05.
welcome, we would know about Europeans. We said, they are right, | :06:06. | :06:09.
we have a problem here. To excuse myself from them, we will fix the | :06:10. | :06:13.
problem and make them feel at home and we will get a kangaroo in front | :06:14. | :06:17.
of their building. They brought a kangaroo. Do you wish you hadn't | :06:18. | :06:22.
have said that to them? I excuse myself because when you only get | :06:23. | :06:26.
that phrase it is impolite, which is something I am not in Brazil is | :06:27. | :06:28.
specially is not. We are a very open country, | :06:29. | :06:43.
we don't fight, we don't go to war, this is a safe place. We are very | :06:44. | :06:46.
welcoming. We did not want to get rid of economic and political blocs, | :06:47. | :06:49.
we are a fine country and we are very proud of our country. What do | :06:50. | :06:52.
you hope the legacy will be of Rio 2016? The legacy, I just told you, | :06:53. | :06:55.
when you look at downtown Rio, the poor areas are completely renovated. | :06:56. | :07:01.
The sewage system we are building in the poor areas, 100% sewage, the | :07:02. | :07:08.
training around the Maracana, people have been using it. Now is party | :07:09. | :07:12.
time, we know how to throw a party much better than everyone else. | :07:13. | :07:17.
Edward pies, the mayor of Rio. He said to me, feeling quite anxious | :07:18. | :07:21.
about the coming days -- Eduardo Paes that he is also enthusiastic. | :07:22. | :07:28.
-- but he is also optimistic. He leaves his post after a number of | :07:29. | :07:32.
years at the end of this year, it is in his interest to make sure it goes | :07:33. | :07:37.
according to plan. Everybody is looking at the city. You are in a | :07:38. | :07:41.
prime location to show our viewers a bit of what is behind you in that | :07:42. | :07:47.
beautiful city. We are really lucky, feeling lucky all day because it is | :07:48. | :07:53.
Brazilian winter here. 27 degrees, which is perfect for me from London. | :07:54. | :07:57.
This is what we can see. Pristine, brand-new, ready to go. This is what | :07:58. | :08:02.
the authorities want us to see, the Olympic Park in the centre of your | :08:03. | :08:08.
screen. Tennis Centre, the large circular building. Behind that, we | :08:09. | :08:15.
have the official, one of two buildings, the aquatic centre, which | :08:16. | :08:19.
will be home to the water polo events and the swimming. To the | :08:20. | :08:26.
left, three Cariocas, hosting tae kwon do, judo, and just in front of | :08:27. | :08:33.
it, I think you can see a shot of that, a pretty mammoth building, | :08:34. | :08:37.
that is the velodrome. It will be home to the cycling. Into the far | :08:38. | :08:43.
left of that, gymnastics. And then the maria lank aquatics centre, | :08:44. | :08:49.
second purpose-built, the famous Brazilian athlete we will see | :08:50. | :08:56.
synchronised swimming. Underwater swimming events. Looking pretty | :08:57. | :09:06.
good. The true test will be when people descend on here. We are | :09:07. | :09:09.
expecting half a million visitors. Tickets sold as we speak, about 20% | :09:10. | :09:17.
is left of the venues to fill the capacity. Interesting to see how | :09:18. | :09:21.
this shapes our particular with infrastructure with the Newmachar | :09:22. | :09:25.
line connecting this part of the city to the South zone that has just | :09:26. | :09:30.
opened up today. So far so good but time will tell. A whole new era for | :09:31. | :09:37.
Rio. Looking forward to speaking to you throughout the week on outside | :09:38. | :09:38.
source. A story coming out of the United | :09:39. | :09:44.
States. The mother of a dead American Muslim | :09:45. | :09:46.
soldier has hit back at Donald Trump for questioning her silence | :09:47. | :09:49.
during a speech by her husband. Her husband, Khizr Khan, | :09:50. | :09:53.
attacked the Republican nominee in an emotional speech | :09:54. | :09:55.
to the Democratic National Mr Trump later suggested Mrs Khan | :09:56. | :09:57.
may not have been allowed to speak. In their first interview | :09:58. | :10:03.
with the international media, Mr and Mrs Khan spoke | :10:04. | :10:05.
to our North American editor, Donald Trump, in an escalating war | :10:06. | :10:20.
of words with the Muslim family of a fall in US soldier. This is one | :10:21. | :10:24.
fight people are telling Donald Trump they can't win but at the | :10:25. | :10:28.
moment he is not listening -- he can't win. Complaining again on | :10:29. | :10:31.
social media he had been a subject of a vicious attack by the family. | :10:32. | :10:35.
Their speech about the death of their son, an American Muslim | :10:36. | :10:39.
posthumously awarded a Bronze Star, purple heart for heroism has | :10:40. | :10:44.
electrified politics. It was at the Democratic convention. When I met | :10:45. | :10:47.
them, I asked them, had they committed a vicious attack on Mr | :10:48. | :10:48.
trump? He can insult, disrespect women, | :10:49. | :10:59.
judges, even the members of his own party yet when an ordinary citizen | :11:00. | :11:03.
of this country, a patriotic American Muslim of this country says | :11:04. | :11:07.
anything about him, he says he has been viciously attacked. He has | :11:08. | :11:13.
different sets of rights. No, we all have the same, equal rights. They | :11:14. | :11:17.
were derided by Mr Trump for not having spoken at the convention but | :11:18. | :11:24.
what was her reaction? Everyone in the audience felt that without | :11:25. | :11:28.
saying a word I was sitting in their heart. I was surprised he doesn't | :11:29. | :11:35.
feel the pain. What type of person doesn't feel that pain when you see | :11:36. | :11:40.
it. You are attacking Mr Trump over his behaviour, very openly. Isn't | :11:41. | :11:45.
there a danger that you are going to get attacked openly as well? In | :11:46. | :11:49.
every person's life, there comes a time when you choose to either save | :11:50. | :11:58.
what is the call of the time or shy away. I felt, my family supported my | :11:59. | :12:05.
stance, we said we should do that. The burden we will equally bear. The | :12:06. | :12:10.
normal raw politics is that if you are in a hole, you stop digging -- | :12:11. | :12:15.
normal law. That is not Donald Trump's style. Not over the family | :12:16. | :12:19.
this time but a right old tangle towards the policy towards Ukraine | :12:20. | :12:23.
and having previously said he had a close relationship with Vladimir | :12:24. | :12:26.
Putin, he has now clarified he has never actually met him. It's not | :12:27. | :12:30.
been a great few days for the Republican candidate. | :12:31. | :12:33.
Criticism against Donald Trump hasn't been restricted | :12:34. | :12:35.
Many inside the Republican Party have also begun to distance | :12:36. | :12:39.
themselves from their candidate on this matter. | :12:40. | :12:45.
He's said, "While our Party has bestowed upon him the nomination, | :12:46. | :12:51.
it is not accompanied by unfettered license to defame those | :12:52. | :12:53.
Over the last hour, or so Donald Trump has been | :12:54. | :13:05.
addressing a crowd of supporters in Columbus, Ohio. | :13:06. | :13:07.
Soon after beginning, he stated his support | :13:08. | :13:11.
You know, Hillary will be nothing more than four more years of Obama, | :13:12. | :13:23.
four more years of Isis, four more years of a military that is being | :13:24. | :13:27.
depleted and not taking care of our vets. She said a few months ago our | :13:28. | :13:33.
vets are being taken off, just fine. She said, no, no, it is over | :13:34. | :13:38.
exaggerated, I know the vets, I have tremendous support with vets, raised | :13:39. | :13:41.
a lot of money and gave a lot of money to vets. I will tell you | :13:42. | :13:44.
something, the vets are not being taken care of well, at all. | :13:45. | :13:47.
Katty Kay is in our Washington studio. | :13:48. | :13:51.
Great to have you with us. I feel like there has been a number of | :13:52. | :13:57.
times we have talked about various gaffes, Jon Sobel might have said, | :13:58. | :14:01.
tangles, Donald Trump got into. Will this latest one make a difference | :14:02. | :14:05.
with his Corps supporters? Interestingly, reporters who are in | :14:06. | :14:09.
that hall where he is speaking right now, they are saying amongst his | :14:10. | :14:15.
supporters, this controversy over the Khan family doesn't matter very | :14:16. | :14:22.
much. It matters to the people in the Republican party. Another | :14:23. | :14:25.
Republican saying I am dismayed about the attack and I am appalled, | :14:26. | :14:29.
the list goes on, couple of pages of quotes from Republicans not happy | :14:30. | :14:33.
about what Mr Trump said. It will be interesting to see depending on how | :14:34. | :14:38.
long this lasts in this kind of hyperkinetic media cycle we are in, | :14:39. | :14:42.
whether you get Republicans coming out and saying I can't endorse the | :14:43. | :14:45.
candidate any more. That would be the next step. So far that hasn't | :14:46. | :14:50.
happened but a lot of Republicans all quoted as saying that these | :14:51. | :14:53.
attacks were a mistake from Mr Trump. That is quite interesting to | :14:54. | :14:58.
talk about, endorsements because the Republican convention is over and a | :14:59. | :15:01.
lot of people feel signed, sealed and delivered. But how important are | :15:02. | :15:08.
these next couple of months with, I don't know, newspapers, grandees of | :15:09. | :15:10.
the Republican party speaking out, can they make a difference? I think | :15:11. | :15:15.
if they were going to, they would make a difference to the opinion | :15:16. | :15:20.
polls. Basically, you have a lull with August coming up, they don't | :15:21. | :15:25.
pay much attention probably to the political campaign until middle of | :15:26. | :15:28.
September when the first debate happens. It will be televised | :15:29. | :15:31.
between Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump. That will be a very important | :15:32. | :15:35.
moment in the campaign. It is sort of hard to believe there are many | :15:36. | :15:39.
Americans after a year of this seemingly endless election cycle | :15:40. | :15:44.
that there are many Americans left to haven't made up their minds | :15:45. | :15:46.
between Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton. If there are some yet to be | :15:47. | :15:51.
persuaded, that debate will probably be a critical moment but so were | :15:52. | :15:55.
voices from within the Republican party. That can go both ways. | :15:56. | :15:58.
Because Donald Trump can say, the establishment of the party is | :15:59. | :16:03.
attacking me. I am the antiestablishment candidate, that is | :16:04. | :16:06.
why you have always loved me. I am not sure how much weight they have | :16:07. | :16:10.
but we will see. We will see if many more voices come out over this issue | :16:11. | :16:16.
or any other foreign policy issue. Thank you. We will catch you later | :16:17. | :16:18.
on world News America. Coming up in Outside Source | :16:19. | :16:22.

senior managers to take more risk. As we got through 2010 and 2011, as | :19:52. | :19:56.
we were generating more profits, we started to be told to spread our | :19:57. | :20:02.
wings even more. So, you know, we would get e-mails coming through, | :20:03. | :20:07.
revenue, revenue, revenue. The court heard dramatic evidence of that hunt | :20:08. | :20:11.
for revenue. Fictitious accounts, secret slush runs, he was called the | :20:12. | :20:16.
Master fraudster, out of control as bets on the market went wrong and he | :20:17. | :20:21.
tried to hide increasing losses. Britain's biggest ever fraud, jail | :20:22. | :20:24.
for the rogue city trader who lost more than ?1 billion. Kweku Adoboli | :20:25. | :20:28.
Was sentenced to seven years in prison. Now, he is looking for | :20:29. | :20:30.
redemption. I have apologised and I will | :20:31. | :20:33.
continue apologising. I am devastated, not for myself, but | :20:34. | :20:43.
for my institution and the people I worked with. These are not just | :20:44. | :20:47.
devices, it is how I feel, I failed. I made mistakes. You will called a | :20:48. | :20:52.
liar. I was called a liar and I accept I lied, I was dishonest in | :20:53. | :20:56.
the way I was doing things. Has your behaviour changed in banking enough? | :20:57. | :21:02.
-- has behaviour changed. Absolutely not. The young people I have spoken | :21:03. | :21:06.
to, former colleagues I have spoken to, are still struggling with the | :21:07. | :21:12.
same issues. The same conflicts. The same pressures. To achieve, no | :21:13. | :21:17.
matter what. This is one Finsbury Avenue in central London, the home | :21:18. | :21:20.
of UBS equities training and where Kweku Adoboli used to work. -- | :21:21. | :21:26.
equities trading. Since his conviction, the banking sector, has | :21:27. | :21:29.
culture changed? There are thousands more compliance officers, there are | :21:30. | :21:36.
thousands more pages of regulation. But, at its simplest, banking is a | :21:37. | :21:41.
mixture of money, profit and risk. That can be a toxic combination. | :21:42. | :21:48.
This is a book, sort of, a scrapbook I had in prison, actually. Looking | :21:49. | :21:52.
back, Kweku Adoboli older now, maybe wiser, can never work in banking | :21:53. | :21:59.
again. It has been a long journey. It would be wonderful if we could | :22:00. | :22:03.
turn the page and start the next step. But, yeah... | :22:04. | :22:09.
For Kweku Adoboli, a new legal battles. He is fighting extradition | :22:10. | :22:21.
back to where he was born, Garner. He says he has something to offer | :22:22. | :22:26.
the UK, giving advice on encouraging traders away from criminal | :22:27. | :22:29.
behaviour. -- where he was born in Ghana. | :22:30. | :22:32.
The Chinese online taxi hailing firm Didi Chuxing says it is to take | :22:33. | :22:35.
control of Uber's business in the country, ending | :22:36. | :22:37.
Uber's China business will retain its separate branding, | :22:38. | :22:41.
and Uber China's shareholders will receive a 20% stake | :22:42. | :22:43.
Tell us a bit about why this deal is so significant. It is really | :22:44. | :23:02.
significant because it shows the kind of difficulties that | :23:03. | :23:05.
non-Chinese companies have, when trying to establish themselves in | :23:06. | :23:12.
China. UberAdoboli is a giant in this sharing economy. But it was not | :23:13. | :23:17.
able to make a go of it in China. -- Uber is a giant. The lesson is that | :23:18. | :23:22.
the kinds of mistakes, the kinds of ways they went about it, and perhaps | :23:23. | :23:27.
the lessons for other American companies that are really trying to | :23:28. | :23:32.
gain a foothold in China. Basically, the messages, it is pretty tough | :23:33. | :23:34.
business. Thank you. I will bring you a tweet. We have | :23:35. | :23:44.
talked about the real Olympics, what about this one? | :23:45. | :23:55.
Almost 49% of all consumers in Brazil have experienced some kind of | :23:56. | :24:03.
card fraud in the past five years. Data theft, for example, in Brazil | :24:04. | :24:08.
accounted for more than $4 billion in losses back in 2013. I want to | :24:09. | :24:14.
play you one expert who has tips on how to keep yourself safe. | :24:15. | :24:17.
The type of fraud is obviously varied and multimodal, some people | :24:18. | :24:24.
have their cards copied. And the fraudster can use that cards in good | :24:25. | :24:27.
old-fashioned magnetic stripe machines and like the ones we heard | :24:28. | :24:32.
used instead of chips. Sometimes more sophisticated, people having | :24:33. | :24:36.
fishing attacks, sending e-mails and being tricked into giving out | :24:37. | :24:39.
information they shouldn't. Last time I was in Brazil, I am still | :24:40. | :24:43.
getting a text message periodically every two weeks, it starts with | :24:44. | :24:50.
obrigado, claiming to be from Uber. My Portuguese colleagues are telling | :24:51. | :24:54.
me it is asking me to press on a link, which if I press on that link, | :24:55. | :24:58.
I will be introducing some malware onto my phone. A classic example of | :24:59. | :25:06.
what it is called SMSpshing. The main thing is make sure your card is | :25:07. | :25:12.
in sight. Report it to your bank. It is worth keeping in contact with | :25:13. | :25:16.
your bank and if your bank knows you are travelling into Rio or Brazil, | :25:17. | :25:19.
it is more likely to apply the right risk checks it is doing when the | :25:20. | :25:23.
card is used. You can subscribe to these alert services so you can see | :25:24. | :25:27.
when your card is being used, usually to reassure you get is you. | :25:28. | :25:31.
If you're getting texts which were not you using the card, that is your | :25:32. | :25:33.
job to phone the bank. Some tips to keep you safe. More | :25:34. | :25:39.
stories from Rio and Brazil in the second half of this programme but | :25:40. | :25:45.
that is the end of this half hour. Thank you for watching. | :25:46. | :25:48. |
