Hello and welcome to outside source. A number of hours ago it was | :00:12. | :00:19.
confirmed that King Bhumibol of Thailand had died. Mourners had | :00:20. | :00:23.
gathered and there has been nationwide outpouring of grief. | :00:24. | :00:29.
Donald Trump has been responding strongly to more accusations against | :00:30. | :00:33.
him. It was a real shock when all of a sudden his hands were all over me. | :00:34. | :00:39.
These vicious claims about me of inappropriate conduct with women are | :00:40. | :00:47.
totally and absolutely false. We have a number of stories to tell | :00:48. | :00:52.
you, all relating to Brexit. One is that the Scottish Government is | :00:53. | :00:56.
laying the groundwork for a second independence referendum. As he may | :00:57. | :01:00.
well have seen, everyone is talking about Bob Dylan. He has been awarded | :01:01. | :01:04.
the Nobel Prize for literature, the first time a songwriter has won the | :01:05. | :01:09.
award. As usual, we will be here throughout the hour live in the BBC | :01:10. | :01:13.
newsroom. You can get in touch in all the normal ways. | :01:14. | :01:27.
Thailand's King Bhumibol has died aged 88. This is how Thai television | :01:28. | :01:34.
made the announcement. As you'd imagine, there has been an | :01:35. | :01:58.
outpouring of grief across the country. Crowds gathered in | :01:59. | :02:01.
particular outside a hospital where the king was being treated in | :02:02. | :02:05.
Bangkok. As you can see from these pictures, hundreds of people have | :02:06. | :02:11.
been turning out, some holding pictures of the King, others wearing | :02:12. | :02:17.
pink, which signifies good health, or yellow, the royal colour. After | :02:18. | :02:22.
several hours of rumour, just after 7pm, the news was made official. | :02:23. | :02:26.
They will be a year-long mourning period in Thailand and for the next | :02:27. | :02:31.
30 days flags across the country will fly at half-mast. King Bhumibol | :02:32. | :02:36.
has been the world's longest reigning monarch and Jonathan head | :02:37. | :02:43.
looks back at his 70 year reign. King Bhumibol reigned for so long | :02:44. | :02:47.
that he was the pre-eminent soul in his country yet he remained an | :02:48. | :02:54.
enigma. A cultured, outwardly modern monarch with few legal powers but | :02:55. | :02:57.
with the status of the semidivine feudal ruler. Throughout his reign, | :02:58. | :03:05.
he enjoyed lavage -- lavish public rain yet a true assessment of his | :03:06. | :03:11.
popularity was never possible because of laws about talking about | :03:12. | :03:18.
the public -- about the royal family. He ascended to the throne | :03:19. | :03:23.
after the shooting of his brother. The young King sat about restoring | :03:24. | :03:28.
the prestige of the monarchy by travelling across the country. | :03:29. | :03:33.
Thailand was then a poor but fast-growing nation. King Bhumibol | :03:34. | :03:40.
presented himself as a caring money, interested -- a caring monarch, | :03:41. | :03:49.
interested in people. He became an indispensable figure of national | :03:50. | :03:56.
unity, using his revered status to reach out to remote areas during the | :03:57. | :03:59.
communist insurgency of the Cold War. He gained a reputation as a | :04:00. | :04:06.
mediator during periods of our people. In 1992, he famously | :04:07. | :04:11.
chastised a military leader and a protest leader. It was after that | :04:12. | :04:15.
that Thailand enjoyed its longest period of democratic rule. However, | :04:16. | :04:22.
the buyers of this man, Thaksin Shinawatra, a tycoon turned | :04:23. | :04:31.
politician proved to be a changing part -- a changing point. He was too | :04:32. | :04:37.
much for the Conservative establishment around the King and | :04:38. | :04:41.
King Bhumibol himself was clearly uncomfortable with him. He was | :04:42. | :04:46.
ousted in a military coup in 2006. Like previous coups, it was quickly | :04:47. | :04:52.
endorsed by the palace. Pro-tax in Shinawatra governments that were | :04:53. | :04:55.
elected after the coup were also forced from office, angering the | :04:56. | :05:02.
supporters and tarnishing the monarchy's once untouchable | :05:03. | :05:12.
reputation. In later life, King Bhumibol became more distant, often | :05:13. | :05:19.
hospitalised with illnesses. He was still revered and his legacy is a | :05:20. | :05:24.
highly personalised monarchy. It will struggle to redefine itself now | :05:25. | :05:30.
that he has gone. That was Jonathan reporting from | :05:31. | :05:33.
Bangkok and it is worth telling you that our reporters are restricted in | :05:34. | :05:39.
what they can save. This is because of Thailand's laws. It is a criminal | :05:40. | :05:45.
offence in Thailand to defame, insult or threaten the King, the | :05:46. | :05:49.
Queen, the heir apparent or the Regent. This can also apply to | :05:50. | :05:55.
beaches who are dead or two royal project. Let's be clear, the | :05:56. | :06:01.
definition of defame it incredibly strict. People can face up to 15 | :06:02. | :06:06.
years in prison. This is an Australian national who was | :06:07. | :06:09.
sentenced to three years in prison for releasing a self published novel | :06:10. | :06:19.
which featured a fictional crown prince and he was lucky to be part | :06:20. | :06:24.
in -- pardoned. A Thai national was imprisoned for 20 years for sending | :06:25. | :06:28.
text messages that were thought of as critical of the monarchy and he | :06:29. | :06:39.
died in prison the next year. I'm sure we knew this but this is not | :06:40. | :06:44.
necessarily related to the laws I have mentioned, more that a lot of | :06:45. | :06:51.
disruption has caused to broadcasting in Thailand because of | :06:52. | :06:53.
the mourning period I have mentioned. If you want to hear more | :06:54. | :06:58.
about that, you can find out online on BBC News all about the reign of | :06:59. | :07:07.
King Bhumibol. The BBC News app will help you with that as well. Now, we | :07:08. | :07:12.
will be doing this every day an outside source for the next few | :07:13. | :07:17.
weeks on the US elections. This was the cover of Time magazine and when | :07:18. | :07:22.
it came out and had the words meltdown, it gained a lot of | :07:23. | :07:25.
attention. They have just released this is a follow-up with the words, | :07:26. | :07:31.
total meltdown. Needless to say, Donald Trump will deny that is fair | :07:32. | :07:35.
and would doubtless say this is the mainstream media being dishonest and | :07:36. | :07:39.
totally biased as the often claims. But what is beyond dispute is that | :07:40. | :07:44.
the hailstorm of negative stories about Donald Trump continues. The | :07:45. | :07:48.
polls to are not looking good. This is a prediction model from the New | :07:49. | :07:51.
York Times. It gives Hillary Clinton and 89% chance of winning the | :07:52. | :08:11.
presidency. Given this is a two horse race, that is as close as you | :08:12. | :08:14.
are going to get to certain without one person dropping out. If you look | :08:15. | :08:16.
at the BBC's latest poll of polls, the Hillary Clinton campaign has | :08:17. | :08:19.
opened up a 9-point gap. This does not account for the second TV debate | :08:20. | :08:22.
which was a vicious affair. We don't know how that will feed into | :08:23. | :08:24.
people's opinions but you can see the gap is considerable. There have | :08:25. | :08:27.
been more allegations against Mr Trump of inappropriate sexual | :08:28. | :08:31.
conduct in the last 24 hours. Two women told the New York Times he | :08:32. | :08:35.
groped or kissed them. This is one of those women. It wasn't until they | :08:36. | :08:44.
cleared the meal that, somehow or another, the armrest in the seat | :08:45. | :08:51.
disappeared and it was a real shock when all the sudden, his hands were | :08:52. | :08:54.
all over me. He started encroaching MySpace. And I hesitate to use this | :08:55. | :09:01.
expression, but I'm going to, and that if he was like an octopus. It's | :09:02. | :09:06.
like he had six arms. He was all over the place. But if he had stuck | :09:07. | :09:11.
with the upper part of the body, I might not have gotten... I might not | :09:12. | :09:17.
have gotten that upset but it was when he started putting his hand up | :09:18. | :09:23.
my skirt, that was it. That was it. I was out of there. Mr Trump refutes | :09:24. | :09:30.
that allegation but it's not the only one. A reporter for people | :09:31. | :09:33.
magazine has published this article in it, the reporter claims he kissed | :09:34. | :09:47.
her -- forcibly kissed her during an interview, a claim he denies. These | :09:48. | :09:56.
vicious claims about me of inappropriate conduct with women are | :09:57. | :10:10.
totally and absolutely false. And the Clintons know it and they know | :10:11. | :10:16.
it very well. These claims are all fabricated. They are pure fiction | :10:17. | :10:24.
and they are outright lies. These events never, ever happened and the | :10:25. | :10:31.
people that set them meekly fully understand. We already have | :10:32. | :10:34.
substantial evidence to dispute these lies and it will be made | :10:35. | :10:38.
public in an appropriate way and that an appropriate time very soon. | :10:39. | :10:45.
Mr Trump also said he will sue the New York Times over those | :10:46. | :10:48.
allegations. In the last few hours, a letter has been released from the | :10:49. | :10:53.
New York Times lawyers to Mr Trump's lawyers. It is quite a long letter | :10:54. | :10:58.
and I have just tweeted it out. Many of you are re-tweeting it and | :10:59. | :11:05.
reading it. A couple of the key phrases: | :11:06. | :11:06.
well, as always, we have plenty to discuss. I just want to put all of | :11:07. | :11:29.
these different stories to one side and concentrate on the core fact | :11:30. | :11:33.
here which is that Donald Trump is in real difficulty in terms of | :11:34. | :11:38.
getting to the White House. Yes, you are right and there has actually | :11:39. | :11:41.
been one poll that has come out since that second debate and that | :11:42. | :11:46.
was the poll in Wisconsin showing that he is losing ground there, | :11:47. | :11:49.
particularly in support amongst women. The combination of that video | :11:50. | :11:54.
tape from Access Hollywood where he talks about wanting to grab women | :11:55. | :11:59.
and that second debate performance, they seem to have, at least from | :12:00. | :12:06.
this Wisconsin poll, to be having a chance -- an impact on his chance of | :12:07. | :12:09.
winning an important battle ground state. All of the pollsters and | :12:10. | :12:15.
their modelling suggest Mr Trump's paths for getting to the White | :12:16. | :12:19.
House, to the magic number of electoral college votes, are getting | :12:20. | :12:22.
narrower and narrower. What he is trying to say is this is all to do | :12:23. | :12:27.
with the crooked media, to do with the Clinton campaign, it is all | :12:28. | :12:31.
corruption and effectively he is taking on the world. He is saying to | :12:32. | :12:37.
his supporters, it is you, me, our movement against everybody and if we | :12:38. | :12:41.
don't win, it will be because the system is rigged. Not because we | :12:42. | :12:48.
didn't run a good campaign, because I was not a good candidate or | :12:49. | :12:51.
because of all these allegations. One of the people he is taking on is | :12:52. | :12:54.
Michelle Obama. I've not seen this but she has been talking, is that | :12:55. | :12:59.
right? She has been talking and she gave a powerful speech just before | :13:00. | :13:03.
he spoke in Florida in which she said that this had shaken her to the | :13:04. | :13:07.
core and that she hadn't been so running to speak about this abuse | :13:08. | :13:11.
issues but it would be disingenuous not to. Michelle Obama is named -- | :13:12. | :13:17.
is an extraordinarily effective surrogates for Hillary Clinton. She | :13:18. | :13:22.
is a weapon that the Hillary Clinton campaign is using sparingly but with | :13:23. | :13:26.
devastating effect. She is very popular. Her poll approval ratings | :13:27. | :13:31.
are high and when she sent out like this, she has an impact. For her to | :13:32. | :13:35.
be speaking in this genuine, heartfelt way about how she felt | :13:36. | :13:38.
about these allegations of sexual abuse and what she felt it said | :13:39. | :13:42.
about Donald Trump's character is the kind of thing that will help the | :13:43. | :13:46.
Clinton campaign get its message out. Isn't it extraordinary when we | :13:47. | :13:50.
have Hillary Clinton trying to be the first female president of | :13:51. | :13:54.
America and she must be getting ten, 15, 20% of coverage at the moment? | :13:55. | :14:01.
Donald Trump must be eating everything in terms of how the media | :14:02. | :14:08.
is reporting this? It looks like we will spend the last three weeks of | :14:09. | :14:11.
this campaign talking about sexual abuse when we are on verge of having | :14:12. | :14:18.
first e-mail evident. We are talking about sex, sexual issues, | :14:19. | :14:23.
misconduct, what Donald Trump may or may not have done, what Bill Clinton | :14:24. | :14:27.
may or may not have done and I think this will dominate the end of this | :14:28. | :14:31.
campaign. It has become a gutter campaign. It is phenomenally | :14:32. | :14:34.
depressing in many ways that this is what the bait to elect a potentially | :14:35. | :14:41.
the most powerful free world is coming down to issues of groping and | :14:42. | :14:45.
sexual abuse and this kind of behaviour. I'll leave it there. We | :14:46. | :14:50.
will speak again next week. Thank you for coming on, as always. In a | :14:51. | :14:55.
few minutes time, we will speak about a hurricane, not hurricane | :14:56. | :14:59.
Matthew but the next one to be considered. Hurricane Nicole is | :15:00. | :15:02.
affecting the people of Bermuda and we will bring you up to be -- up to | :15:03. | :15:09.
date. Now, a male gorilla has been | :15:10. | :15:13.
recaptured after escaping from its enclosure at London zoo. Police were | :15:14. | :15:18.
called to the do this evening, and the western lowland silverback | :15:19. | :15:25.
gorilla had escaped into the secure keepers area. No one was hurt and he | :15:26. | :15:31.
is back in his down after being shot with a tranquillising dart. It was a | :15:32. | :15:36.
safe, secure keepers area so at no part -- no point did he get out into | :15:37. | :15:41.
the zoo. I would like to thank our staff, keepers and vets who | :15:42. | :15:45.
responded so quickly and also the support of the emergency services | :15:46. | :15:49.
who are available at any London attraction to deal with incidents. | :15:50. | :15:52.
This was a minor incident and after all of this coming he is back in his | :15:53. | :15:57.
down and interacting happily with his family. The keepers are so | :15:58. | :16:01.
professional, so caring, so they are going to stay on this evening, check | :16:02. | :16:05.
how he is doing and I have also been told they will be giving him some of | :16:06. | :16:07.
his favourite treats later on. We are live in the BBC newsroom. The | :16:08. | :16:22.
people of Thailand are mourning king Bhumibol who has passed away at the | :16:23. | :16:26.
age of 88. Let's bring you some of the main stories from BBC World | :16:27. | :16:31.
Service. First of all, BBC Arabic is reporting that the US military has | :16:32. | :16:36.
attacked three radar sites in Yemen after a missile was fired at a US | :16:37. | :16:42.
warship in international waters. The Pentagon says the target sites were | :16:43. | :16:47.
controlled by rebels. Reports that Germany's court has | :16:48. | :16:58.
rejected a trade deal with Canada. The deal that we spoke about last | :16:59. | :17:03.
night will remove many trade barriers. Campaigners object to the | :17:04. | :17:08.
fact that parts of the deal will be implemented before all national | :17:09. | :17:11.
parliaments in the EU have voted on it. | :17:12. | :17:16.
The United Nations General Assembly has approved Antonio could cherish | :17:17. | :17:21.
to be the next UN Secretary General. He will serve a five-year term and | :17:22. | :17:28.
it is fair to say he has received a warm welcome. The Prime Minister of | :17:29. | :17:33.
Canada offers his congratulations. There is also a tweet from Ukraine's | :17:34. | :17:36.
evident. That has also been congratulations | :17:37. | :17:50.
on Ban Ki-Moon, the man in the job at the moment. The BBC's cheap | :17:51. | :17:57.
international correspondent Lisa did that has been speaking with Antonio | :17:58. | :18:01.
Guterres just in the last few hours. Here they are talking. Well, the | :18:02. | :18:09.
pressure, not yet, the responsibility, of course. We live | :18:10. | :18:13.
unfortunately in a world where you see impugning the and | :18:14. | :18:19.
unpredictability everywhere. Conflicts seem never to die and the | :18:20. | :18:23.
international community has shown very little capacity not only to | :18:24. | :18:26.
prevent conflict and to solve them but even to get a minimum of | :18:27. | :18:32.
humanitarian assistance to people involved in conflict situations. So | :18:33. | :18:35.
we are facing a very difficult moment. | :18:36. | :18:39.
Chelsea football club has announced a huge deal. Let's start off | :18:40. | :18:45.
business by talking about it. Here you can see them tweeting that it | :18:46. | :18:49.
has a new technical partnership with Nike. Effectively it means they will | :18:50. | :18:55.
be making the Chelsea kit among other things. It starts next season | :18:56. | :18:58.
and the media reports the value of this is about 60 million pounds a | :18:59. | :19:04.
year. That is more than $70 million a year. Perhaps more significantly | :19:05. | :19:10.
this deal is going to run for 15 years, the biggest commercial deal | :19:11. | :19:14.
in the club's history. I also want to play you a report | :19:15. | :19:19.
about virtual reality. Here is the report. | :19:20. | :19:30.
Lost in a virtual world. This is what Sony thinks is the future of | :19:31. | :19:36.
virtual gaming. It's hoping many people will splash out for these | :19:37. | :19:39.
headsets. The technology have come a long way since VR threaten to be the | :19:40. | :19:48.
biggest craze in the 1990s and failed when people felt sick. I am | :19:49. | :19:52.
trying out a game which involves being lowered into the cage deep in | :19:53. | :19:57.
the ocean where dangers lurk. I've got to confess, that was pretty | :19:58. | :20:00.
scary but the question is, how many people will be willing to put my | :20:01. | :20:05.
headset for this and other virtual reality experiences. The competition | :20:06. | :20:10.
includes oculus rift, owned by Facebook, and then there is the HTC | :20:11. | :20:16.
vibe. Both offer even more experiences than Sony but at a | :20:17. | :20:20.
higher price. The technology is being aimed at first act keening | :20:21. | :20:29.
gamers but there is the hoped-for expansion. Obviously gaming is close | :20:30. | :20:33.
to our hearts but you can talk about other applications as well, like | :20:34. | :20:38.
health, education and people minds come alive when try virtual reality. | :20:39. | :20:45.
It is certainly a compelling experience the first time you try | :20:46. | :20:49.
it. Now we will find out whether living in virtual reality will | :20:50. | :20:55.
appeal to a mass audience. As I was mentioning a few minutes | :20:56. | :21:01.
ago, I want to update you on another dangerous hurricane in the | :21:02. | :21:05.
Caribbean. We spoke over the last few weeks about the devastating | :21:06. | :21:10.
hurricane Matthew has caused. The latest storm is hurricane Nicole and | :21:11. | :21:17.
it is Bermuda that is being hit. A little bit earlier, I went behind | :21:18. | :21:21.
this green well you will find our colleagues from BBC weather and I | :21:22. | :21:25.
spoke to Darren bet who compared hurricane Matthew with hurricane | :21:26. | :21:31.
Nicole. Not quite as powerful as hurricane Matthew. A category the -- | :21:32. | :21:37.
a category three hurricane with sustained winds of 200 plummet as | :21:38. | :21:43.
per hour. I've just heard there are about 225,000 homes without power on | :21:44. | :21:49.
the media. This is an enhanced satellite picture. This is Bermuda. | :21:50. | :21:54.
Follow the grey dot in the middle, if you like. That is the eye of the | :21:55. | :22:00.
hurricane. It got very, very close. It is now moving away and the winds | :22:01. | :22:05.
and rain will start to ease. Hurricane is our common in the | :22:06. | :22:08.
Caribbean but are they common in Bermuda? On average, you would | :22:09. | :22:13.
expect to find six or seven storms that would hit Bermuda. They are | :22:14. | :22:19.
usually weaker than this one. We are uncertain as to whether the very | :22:20. | :22:23.
centre of the eye swept across Bermuda but the last time a category | :22:24. | :22:29.
three hurricane made a direct hit in Bermuda was 1926, 90 years ago. | :22:30. | :22:34.
Lots of you will already have been talking about this story. Bob Dylan | :22:35. | :22:39.
has been awarded the Nobel Prize for literature. The first musician to | :22:40. | :22:44.
receive the literature award, and we will speak about that in a minute. | :22:45. | :22:49.
We should also mention this. 11 people have won Nobel prizes in the | :22:50. | :22:52.
last few days. You will notice they all share one thing in common. They | :22:53. | :22:57.
are all men. In fact, 900 Nobel prizes awarded in the Novell 's | :22:58. | :23:04.
history, 49 have gone to women, so no prizes for gender equality to | :23:05. | :23:07.
those choosing the winners. Of course, that doesn't take away from | :23:08. | :23:12.
the achievements of the individual awarded prizes. In terms of Bob | :23:13. | :23:17.
Dylan, he has won this for having created new poetic expressions | :23:18. | :23:20.
within the great American tradition. Lots of people from the world of | :23:21. | :23:23.
literature have been commenting on this as well. Salman Rushdie says: | :23:24. | :23:28.
I think most people agree with that. I think it came as a surprise to | :23:29. | :23:43.
most of us as well. He has been talked about for the last few years | :23:44. | :23:48.
as possibly somebody who stood an outside chance of getting the award | :23:49. | :23:52.
but it did seem to be a genuine shock to people when that | :23:53. | :23:55.
announcement was made. You could hear all the journalists in the room | :23:56. | :24:00.
as his name was read out actually gasping, in admiration, and even | :24:01. | :24:05.
though it is a shock to many people, there are very few people out there | :24:06. | :24:08.
that don't think it's a very well-deserved reward. Are his words | :24:09. | :24:15.
judged as words on a page or words to be sung? I think you can look at | :24:16. | :24:24.
it whichever way you like. When you look at his lyrics, they have the | :24:25. | :24:30.
density of poetry, however you define a poem. It has the extra | :24:31. | :24:34.
dimensional of it being music, but if you go back to people like Homer, | :24:35. | :24:39.
their words have been put to music as well. Perhaps there is an area in | :24:40. | :24:43.
the middle that whether something is set to music or not, if you look at | :24:44. | :24:47.
it as a piece of work, look at the words and the emotional impact they | :24:48. | :24:51.
have, if you think it is a poem, it is a poem. I guess this is immense | :24:52. | :24:58.
him as a voice of a generation we associate with the 60s. | :24:59. | :25:08.
He was the voice of the civil rights movement and this is very much | :25:09. | :25:21.
another award to reflect that. Does this signal a change in direction | :25:22. | :25:24.
for the Academy? That question was actually put to them today and the | :25:25. | :25:30.
secretary said, the Times, they are changing. We will have to see how | :25:31. | :25:36.
this goes over the next few years. This could be admiration because of | :25:37. | :25:39.
his exceptional talent but maybe there are opening up to other areas. | :25:40. | :25:44.
In a few minutes time, we will be talking about Nick Kyrgios to played | :25:45. | :25:52.
several points in the Shanghai Masters and wasn't trying. Now he | :25:53. | :25:56.
will have to hand over some cash. We will speak about that in a few | :25:57. | :25:58.
minutes. See you then. Thanks for tuning in. Let's have a | :25:59. | :26:11.
look at the international weather now and the big story of today has | :26:12. | :26:16.
been hurricane Nicole battering Bermuda. The IRB | :26:17. | :26:18. |
