Centre. Welcome to Outside Source. The

:00:00.:00:23.

battle for most Salah has begun and we are on the front lines. They are

:00:24.:00:26.

just about to move forward in the distance is only about 300 metres.

:00:27.:00:31.

Today, they liberated ten villages. But they will have to liberate

:00:32.:00:34.

another 70 before they are on the outskirts of the city. Update on all

:00:35.:00:45.

enrolments of the story from BBC Arabic coming up. Donald Trump is

:00:46.:00:49.

telling his supporters that the US elections have been wrecked. Not for

:00:50.:00:52.

the first time senior Republicans disagree with them. We will be live

:00:53.:00:56.

in Washington, DC to discuss that. There it is. The BBC got rare access

:00:57.:01:05.

to the launch of a man's Chinese space mission. I will play you that

:01:06.:01:08.

report in full and for the first time since they were released, we

:01:09.:01:13.

have heard from some of the Chibok schoolgirls kidnapped in Nigeria. I

:01:14.:01:15.

will play you that as well. Night has fallen on the day one of

:01:16.:01:40.

the operation to retake morsel. And this matters because it was the fall

:01:41.:01:48.

of Mosul in 2014 vert helped the world pay attention to the Islamic

:01:49.:01:52.

State group. Iraq's Prime Minister announced the offensive earlier. The

:01:53.:02:02.

hour of victory has arrived. Operations for the liberation of

:02:03.:02:06.

Mosul have begun. I announced the start of this heroic operation to

:02:07.:02:09.

free you from the terror and the oppression of Daesh and God willing,

:02:10.:02:17.

soon we will meet on Mosul soil to celebrate liberation and your

:02:18.:02:21.

salvation. The ground offensive is approaching from several directions.

:02:22.:02:25.

It is also being supported from the air by the US-led coalition. The BBC

:02:26.:02:29.

has correspondence on all major fronts. First of all, lets go to the

:02:30.:02:34.

east of Mosul where Kurdish forces are gathering. Orla Guerin is with

:02:35.:02:42.

them. You can see some of the heavy weaponry that the Kurds have

:02:43.:02:46.

applied. We were with the Peshmerga units as they moved forward. They

:02:47.:02:52.

came across the plains here, kicking up clouds of dust. Lots of tanks

:02:53.:02:56.

moving forward. They advanced to this position and you can see the

:02:57.:03:06.

fighters at the top of this berm. Islamic State are just on the other

:03:07.:03:11.

side. The distance, we're told, is just 300 metres. The aim of this

:03:12.:03:16.

operation is to clear those villages so that the Iraqi army can pass

:03:17.:03:22.

through this territory and continue on the road to Mosul. That was a

:03:23.:03:25.

lull in the fighting but we have heard artillery and mortar shells

:03:26.:03:30.

being fired this morning. We have had at least two coalition air

:03:31.:03:36.

strikes called in when the fighters here thought they saw suicide

:03:37.:03:39.

bombers approaching in vehicles on the other side. In the last few

:03:40.:03:44.

hours, we have certainly seen the start of this long-awaited

:03:45.:03:50.

offensive. Trying to drive Islamic State out of the city, but this

:03:51.:03:55.

really is the first phase. Orla Guerin, to the east of Mosul.

:03:56.:04:00.

To the south of the city, our Defence Correspondent is with Iraqi

:04:01.:04:07.

forces close to the bermQayyarah airbase. Earlier, our correspondent

:04:08.:04:18.

tweeted this: I can now play you a report that has come in with him.

:04:19.:04:22.

This is a very different Iraqi army that fled in the face of Islamic

:04:23.:04:27.

State just two years ago. Not just because of coalition air power but

:04:28.:04:30.

many of these Iraqi forces have been trained over the past few months by

:04:31.:04:36.

British and American forces. Today they moved ten miles north, still 30

:04:37.:04:42.

miles short of the outskirts of the city. To give you a sense of scale,

:04:43.:04:46.

today they liberated ten villages and they will have to liberate

:04:47.:04:50.

another 70 before they are on the outskirts of the city. As far as

:04:51.:04:57.

resistance on the front line, we saw mortar fire and we know that there

:04:58.:05:03.

was also an anti-tank missile fired that killed an Iraqi soldier. But it

:05:04.:05:07.

was fairly limited and the Iraqis are confident, because they have one

:05:08.:05:11.

key asset, that they are getting intelligence from Iraqi civilians

:05:12.:05:17.

under Islamic State control who are passing on information about

:05:18.:05:22.

positions, strength in numbers on their movements, and what kind of

:05:23.:05:26.

weapons they have. As far as how long this will take, one Iraqi

:05:27.:05:30.

commander told me he thought it would be about a month and they

:05:31.:05:34.

expect fierce resistance when they reached the outskirts of Mosul.

:05:35.:05:41.

Remember, it has an estimated 2000-5000 Islamic State fighters who

:05:42.:05:45.

have died in there among a population of about 1 million. And

:05:46.:05:48.

there are worries about civilian casualties. Fierce resistance will

:05:49.:05:51.

come from the several thousand come from the several thousand

:05:52.:05:55.

Islamic State fighters inside of morsel. But it is not just the city

:05:56.:05:58.

where Islamic State is filling pressure. Let me show you this map

:05:59.:06:09.

from January. All the areas marked in red is territory controlled by

:06:10.:06:13.

Islamic State last year. Take note, to the west of Baghdad, and to the

:06:14.:06:18.

north of Iraq. Because when I bring in the equivalent map for where we

:06:19.:06:22.

are right now, you can see the territory that Islamic State

:06:23.:06:25.

controls has reduced. This is where we were at the beginning of 2015 and

:06:26.:06:29.

this is where we are now. Islamic State is losing territory. While

:06:30.:06:34.

that is the grand scheme of things, at the moment there is a lot of

:06:35.:06:39.

attention on Mosul, not just from a military point of view but from a

:06:40.:06:43.

civilian point of view. Thousands are still living there and they may

:06:44.:06:46.

well get caught up in this violence. The UN is saying it is concerned

:06:47.:06:51.

that this may cause up to 100,000 Iraqis to flee towards Syria and

:06:52.:06:56.

Turkey. They say plans are underway in Syria to receive up to 90,000

:06:57.:07:02.

Iraqi refugees. If ever there was a stark illustration of the flight of

:07:03.:07:05.

appears to be one of the better appears to be one of the better

:07:06.:07:11.

options now. We often turn to our correspondence, Edgard Jalled, from

:07:12.:07:23.

BBC Arabic. In the first age, they are looking to check how Islamic

:07:24.:07:26.

State fighters will face such an offensive. So far we have

:07:27.:07:32.

conflicting reports. Some people say that some of their leaders are

:07:33.:07:36.

fleeing towards Syria. Some other reports say that no, they have

:07:37.:07:40.

decided to fight inside Mosul and they are following the usual tactics

:07:41.:07:47.

in defending themselves, digging tunnels, trying to booby-trap,

:07:48.:07:54.

planting explosive devices around. They are ready for the fight. They

:07:55.:07:57.

know that there is momentum that they need to capture in this battle.

:07:58.:08:04.

And it is believed that there is a deadline that they have to meet,

:08:05.:08:09.

before the US elections. That is why the Iraqi forces are putting all

:08:10.:08:12.

their weight in this battle. That is only a few days away. That is why

:08:13.:08:19.

they are putting all their weight now to achieve this. The first day

:08:20.:08:25.

was focused on the eastern part of Mosul but saying that, this is not

:08:26.:08:29.

the most difficult part of the city. In the western part, Islamic State's

:08:30.:08:35.

defences are stronger. What they have achieved today is considerable

:08:36.:08:42.

because according to the Kurdish forces, they have retaken nine

:08:43.:08:48.

villages, and the president of Kurdistan has given a press

:08:49.:08:53.

conference. He said that 200 square commenters were liberated from

:08:54.:08:57.

Islamic State, so it is still the first day in a big battle so far. In

:08:58.:09:02.

terms of the civilians inside Mosul I mentioned that some may try to get

:09:03.:09:06.

to Syria but can they leave the city? Is there an easy route out? It

:09:07.:09:12.

is very difficult. You imagine with bombing and air strikes, it is

:09:13.:09:15.

difficult. The second challenge is difficult. The second challenge is

:09:16.:09:21.

getting away from Islamic State fighters, who are in a fighting

:09:22.:09:25.

mood. It is not easy for them and this is what aggravates the

:09:26.:09:30.

situation and worries the international community about the

:09:31.:09:34.

situation. Hundreds of thousands of civilians inside the city. That is

:09:35.:09:38.

one conflict we are covering closely. Another is in Syria.

:09:39.:09:42.

Particularly in Aleppo. There has been a significant announcement

:09:43.:09:46.

today. Russia says that attacks on Aleppo will be paused for eight

:09:47.:09:49.

hours on Thursday to allow civilians and rebels to leave the city if they

:09:50.:09:54.

choose. Here is one quote. A senior Russian officer saying that during

:09:55.:09:59.

the eight hour period the Russian air force and Syrian government

:10:00.:10:02.

troops will halt air strikes and firing from any other types of

:10:03.:10:08.

weapons. Yet more harrowing pictures coming in from Aleppo, showing the

:10:09.:10:09.

aftermath. These pictures show a boy

:10:10.:10:15.

being rescued from rubble after an airstrike

:10:16.:10:17.

in Aleppo on Sunday. As you can see, he was left hanging

:10:18.:10:19.

precariously from the upper The EU Foreign Affairs Council has

:11:39.:11:42.

you want more information on the conflict, there is a huge amount of

:11:43.:11:51.

background information online. Let's update you on the US election.

:11:52.:12:01.

This time last week, Donald Trump told us he was glad

:12:02.:12:04.

And we're getting to see what that looks like.

:12:05.:12:07.

A major fall-out with the Republican Party,

:12:08.:12:09.

sneering that a woman wasn't good-looking enough for him to have

:12:10.:12:11.

assaulted her as she claimed, calls for Hillary Clinton to take

:12:12.:12:14.

On Twitter, as you would expect, he said:

:12:15.:12:25.

Sad perhaps, unsubstantiated certainly.

:12:26.:12:30.

There was no evidence that has happened. But Mr Trump continued,

:12:31.:12:44.

saying: Browser goes there is no evidence? -- perhaps because there

:12:45.:12:48.

is no evidence? And then, in what is becoming

:12:49.:12:50.

somewhat of a routine for the Trump campaign,

:12:51.:12:53.

running mate Mike Pence contradicted We're going to accept the will of

:12:54.:13:00.

the American people but between now and election day we will work our

:13:01.:13:04.

hearts out. The American people are tired of the obvious bias in the

:13:05.:13:11.

national media. That is where the rate collection sense goes.

:13:12.:13:23.

The latest polls of polls shows the gap widening.

:13:24.:13:36.

And this graph from Politico shows that 41 percent

:13:37.:13:38.

of Trump supporters are deeply sceptical

:13:39.:13:40.

covering this from Washington. In a covering this from Washington. In a

:13:41.:13:51.

normal election cycle, if a candidate said something that was

:13:52.:13:55.

have their feet held to the fire by have their feet held to the fire by

:13:56.:14:00.

the press. Does that not happened to Donald Trump? Had does he avoid the

:14:01.:14:03.

comeback from this? I think there is a lot of questions being raised here

:14:04.:14:09.

about the voracity of what he is saying about elections here being

:14:10.:14:12.

raped. The Washington Post has done a study showing that between 2000

:14:13.:14:18.

and 2014 it found only 31 cases of voting fraud in the United States.

:14:19.:14:25.

New York University has come up with similar numbers and they are being

:14:26.:14:28.

put out quite clearly today. The press is asking Donald Trump what is

:14:29.:14:31.

evident is that the election is rigged. What Donald Trump is really

:14:32.:14:37.

talking about is something that Mike Pence was picking up on, that a lot

:14:38.:14:42.

of people on the right of American politics firmly believe that the

:14:43.:14:47.

press in America slants towards the left and is biased against

:14:48.:14:50.

Conservative candidates. And that is really what he is railing about. We

:14:51.:14:56.

have seen that in his rallies, the antipathy towards the press corps.

:14:57.:15:01.

You always get some of this. In 2008, following Sarah Palin's

:15:02.:15:06.

rallies, her base, not dissimilar to Donald Trump's, was very anti-media.

:15:07.:15:12.

Saying that it was a rate system. Conservatives feel like they cannot

:15:13.:15:15.

get elected in America because of the media bias, as they call it. I

:15:16.:15:21.

think that resonates more than the idea that there is actually fraud

:15:22.:15:25.

going on in the polling booths. And whether this is a good strategy or

:15:26.:15:30.

not, we will leave that to Mr Trump to decide but is he getting some

:15:31.:15:33.

traction? Because he needs something to stop this downward slide. Well,

:15:34.:15:39.

we have three weeks and one day. Only three weeks and one day, we're

:15:40.:15:43.

nearly there. We are at the finish line. He does need something. He

:15:44.:15:48.

needs something big to turn this around, potentially something to

:15:49.:15:51.

happen to Hillary Clinton. I'm not sure that there is more that Donald

:15:52.:15:56.

Trump can do two races numbers. Clearly his supporters are still

:15:57.:15:59.

with him. There was an extraordinary poll that came out today showing

:16:00.:16:04.

American voters see him as honest American voters see him as honest

:16:05.:16:08.

and trustworthy than see Hillary Clinton as honest and trustworthy.

:16:09.:16:12.

More photos also think he hasn't got the character to be president and

:16:13.:16:17.

they think that she does. These narratives are set in place and it

:16:18.:16:20.

will be difficult for him to change that perception of himself and his

:16:21.:16:24.

candidacy so probably something is going to turn this race around in

:16:25.:16:28.

the next few weeks, if it was to do that, it would have to be something

:16:29.:16:30.

dramatic happening to Hillary Clinton. And while I have you on the

:16:31.:16:35.

programme, I promise I will not turn your microphone down but you got

:16:36.:16:38.

involved in a sharp exchange with Ben Carson, a man who wanted to be

:16:39.:16:42.

president at one stage. You were disagreeing with him on MSNBC over

:16:43.:16:46.

the way that the coverage of these alleged assaults has played out. Is

:16:47.:16:50.

that still a political issue or are we in a remarkable situation where

:16:51.:16:55.

one week on, that has moved to the back of the agenda? The whole issue

:16:56.:17:01.

of assault, and the question I asked doctor Carson was whether he thought

:17:02.:17:04.

the women who had accused Donald Trump of sexual harassment were

:17:05.:17:08.

lying. It was a simple yes or no question but he did not like the

:17:09.:17:11.

question and he asked if my microphone could be shut off. I

:17:12.:17:15.

think 4-4-2 as this is a big issue. You could see that reflected in the

:17:16.:17:19.

polling among female voters. This is not going down well with women and

:17:20.:17:23.

it is not going down well with Republican women.

:17:24.:17:34.

And we are seeing a dramatic shift in the polling of college educated

:17:35.:17:38.

women from the Republican camp to the Democratic camp. That is very

:17:39.:17:40.

bad news for Donald Trump. I have told you this before but women have

:17:41.:17:43.

decided the last five elections in the United States. They vote more

:17:44.:17:45.

than men. He is going to have to turn his numbers around with them

:17:46.:17:48.

and the drip drip of allegations of abuse do not help them. Thank you

:17:49.:17:51.

very much indeed. Those of you watching, if you have not seen Katty

:17:52.:17:53.

Kay against Ben Carson, there is only going to be one winner when it

:17:54.:17:57.

comes to turning the might off. You can see it now on her website.

:17:58.:18:02.

One other important story to update you on.

:18:03.:18:04.

A Republican Party office was firebombed over the weekend.

:18:05.:18:06.

It happened in Hillsborough, North Carolina.

:18:07.:18:08.

A bottle filled with flammable liquid

:18:09.:18:09.

inside was thrown through the window of the Orange County

:18:10.:18:11.

Republican Party headquarters in the middle of the night.

:18:12.:18:14.

These pictures show you the damage this caused.

:18:15.:18:16.

A message reading "Nazi Republicans leave town

:18:17.:18:17.

or else" was also sprayed on a building nearby.

:18:18.:18:30.

No-one was hurt, but other Republican offices are now on alert.

:18:31.:18:33.

Donald Trump suggested Democrat supporters were behind the attack.

:18:34.:18:37.

In a tweet, Hillary Clinton described it as "horrific

:18:38.:18:39.

In a little while we are going to bring you the latest business and

:18:40.:18:53.

sport. I am also going to play you all of this report which contains

:18:54.:18:54.

some emotional scenes. Emotional scenes as the families

:18:55.:18:57.

of twenty-one of Nigeria's Chibok schoolgirls are reunited

:18:58.:19:00.

with their daughters. British detectives investigating the

:19:01.:19:17.

disappearance of toddler Ben Needham say they believe he died in an

:19:18.:19:22.

accident on the Greek island of Kos 25 years ago.

:19:23.:19:30.

Speaking in Kos - where they've been carrying out an extensive search -

:19:31.:19:33.

South Yorkshire Police say an accident remained "the most

:19:34.:19:35.

probable cause" of Ben's disappearance.

:19:36.:19:36.

It is my professional belief that Ben Needham died as a result of an

:19:37.:19:41.

accident near to the farmhouse here where he was last seen playing. The

:19:42.:19:47.

events leading up to and following that incident have been explored by

:19:48.:19:54.

my team and experts to a great extent. The fact that we have not

:19:55.:19:56.

had a direct result during this visit does not protrude the fact

:19:57.:20:02.

that we know to be true. During the last three weeks a number of items

:20:03.:20:05.

have been recovered from both sides. Some of these 93 items will be

:20:06.:20:08.

brought back to the UK for further analysis. Our lead story this
