Tonight, on Reporting Scotland - Prosecutors fail to get an increase | :00:00. | :00:21.
in the sentence for this driver who was responsible for the deaths of | :00:21. | :00:26.
two cyclists. Is what message are we giving to | :00:26. | :00:31.
other drivers? This is someone who has killed and killed again and yet | :00:31. | :00:34.
he is allowed to drive. Also in the programme - Calls for the Scottish | :00:34. | :00:37.
Government to provide free school meals for children in the first | :00:37. | :00:41.
three years of primary. They're off! The first athletes to | :00:41. | :00:44.
make the grade for team Scotland are unveiled for next year's | :00:45. | :00:53.
Commonwealth Games. It's one of the biggest upsets in | :00:53. | :00:57.
Scottish football as lowly Greenock Morton celebrate their victory over | :00:57. | :01:01.
Celtic in the League cup. Good evening. The family of one of | :01:01. | :01:05.
two cyclists killed by an Edinburgh driver have said they're shocked and | :01:05. | :01:08.
disgusted his sentence has not been increased. Appeal judges rejected | :01:08. | :01:11.
the Crown's argument that 49-year-old Gary McCourt should be | :01:11. | :01:14.
jailed and banned from driving for life. Morag Kinniburgh reports. This | :01:14. | :01:28.
woman's family leave court stunned. They had hoped a precedent would be | :01:28. | :01:33.
set this morning, that's drivers who cause the deaths of cyclists should | :01:33. | :01:37.
be banned for life. What message are we giving to other drivers? This is | :01:37. | :01:43.
someone who has killed and killed again. But he can still drive. Is it | :01:43. | :01:50.
safe to walk up the High Street. It is not just cyclists, it is anybody | :01:50. | :01:55.
on the roads. Two years ago, Audrey Fife died after being knocked off | :01:55. | :02:01.
her bike. Gary McCourt was sentenced to 300 years -- 300 hours community | :02:01. | :02:06.
service. The Crown appealed argued that the sentence was too lenient, | :02:06. | :02:10.
especially since he had caused the death of another cyclist in 1985. | :02:10. | :02:14.
The Solicitor general had argued that he should have been jailed for | :02:14. | :02:19.
at least eight months and banned for life. Mrs Fyfe's family and cycle | :02:19. | :02:23.
campaigners say they saw no value, but they felt a ban was needed. I am | :02:23. | :02:33.
disgusted. I cannot believe it sends out the wrong message to others. | :02:33. | :02:43.
That the judiciary is not fit for purpose. Cycling lobby had appealed | :02:43. | :02:48.
hard. Thousands called for action to try and make the roads safer for | :02:48. | :02:53.
everyone. motor drivers should have a far greater responsibility. The | :02:53. | :03:00.
rejection appeal really reinforces the fact that the justice system is | :03:00. | :03:04.
not protecting road leaders like we would want them to. Campaign is | :03:04. | :03:10.
asking their MSP is to review sentencing to improve public | :03:10. | :03:15.
protection on Scotland's roads. Unions, charities and the Church of | :03:15. | :03:18.
Scotland have written to the Scottish Government demanding that | :03:18. | :03:21.
primary school children here get the same free school meals deal that | :03:21. | :03:24.
will be introduced in England next year. All children there in the | :03:24. | :03:27.
first three years of primary will get a free lunch from September next | :03:27. | :03:31.
year. Campaigners say the Scottish Government must now finally fulfill | :03:31. | :03:34.
its promise to do the same. Aileen Clarke has been looking at this and | :03:34. | :03:38.
can tell us more. Well, Catriona, the announcement | :03:38. | :03:40.
last week by Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg, that all children in | :03:40. | :03:44.
England will get free school meals in Primary one, two and three, has | :03:44. | :03:46.
certainly galvanised campaigners here. A whole range of charities, | :03:46. | :03:53.
the STUC and the Church of Scotland have signed a letter to Scottish | :03:53. | :03:57.
ministers. They're demanding that a similar roll-out of free school | :03:57. | :04:00.
meals, promised here three years ago, happens now. At the moment, | :04:00. | :04:04.
more than 81,000 primary pupils in Scotland get free school meals. | :04:04. | :04:09.
Extending that to all primary 1-3 pupils would mean that figure could | :04:09. | :04:15.
double to around 165,000. John Dickie, one of the signatories to | :04:15. | :04:18.
the letter, says that needs to happen. Parents are under | :04:18. | :04:27.
extraordinary pressures, there is mounting evidence of health problems | :04:27. | :04:31.
in children. There is mounting evidence of the educational benefits | :04:31. | :04:34.
of a universal approach to free school meals. There's no time to | :04:34. | :04:38.
lose. The sooner we see them getting healthy school lunch, the better. | :04:38. | :04:43.
Five years ago, there was a trial carried out to pilot free school | :04:44. | :04:51.
meals. During that scheme, three quarters of pupils were taking | :04:51. | :04:54.
advantage of a school lunch. In some areas. That was almost a third more | :04:54. | :04:58.
than when most pupils had to pay for it. Now that means of course that | :04:58. | :05:02.
even at best a quarter of children didn't take the meal on offer even | :05:02. | :05:05.
through it was free. Researchers explained that by terming this group | :05:05. | :05:08.
of children fussy eaters. Not much evidence of fussy eaters at this | :05:08. | :05:17.
primary in Glasgow this lunchtime. It seems to have gone very well at | :05:17. | :05:26.
this primary school. I had custard. I had milk, salad and a chicken | :05:26. | :05:37.
wrap. I had a baked petite and tuna. There is a push to produce healthy | :05:37. | :05:44.
balanced meals here. Years ago, salad was a no-go area, now all the | :05:44. | :05:49.
kids are into it. Resch fruit was a no-go area. Nutrition is just one | :05:49. | :05:56.
aspect of lunch which is very much valued. Children come in and spend | :05:56. | :06:04.
some time with their teacher seeing to look at things like manners, | :06:04. | :06:09.
talking about healthy options. Instead of doing healthy eating less | :06:09. | :06:13.
and in the classroom, we have moved it into the dinner school. The | :06:13. | :06:18.
Scottish Government said they are committed to expanding free school | :06:18. | :06:23.
meal provision and they are asking the UK Government to clarify if | :06:23. | :06:26.
additional money isn't the added to the Scottish budget to reflect that | :06:27. | :06:31.
extra spending. But no firm promise from Scottish ministers on when | :06:31. | :06:34.
primary one to three pupils here will all be given the chance of a | :06:34. | :06:37.
free school dinner. The Scottish woman accused of drug | :06:37. | :06:40.
smuggling in Peru will learn her sentence at a hearing next Tuesday, | :06:40. | :06:43.
according to lawyers representing her co-accused. 20-year-old Melissa | :06:43. | :06:46.
Reid from Lenzie near Glasgow and Michaella McCollum, who's from | :06:46. | :06:48.
County Tyrone, appeared before a judge at a prison in Lima yesterday. | :06:48. | :06:54.
They both pleaded guilty to the charges. It's thought that could | :06:54. | :06:57.
mean they'll be given a reduced sentence for trying to smuggle £1.5 | :06:57. | :07:00.
million pounds worth of cocaine out of the country. The women also hope | :07:00. | :07:05.
that they might be able to serve some of their sentence in the UK. | :07:05. | :07:11.
You're watching Reporting Scotland from the BBC. Still to come on the | :07:11. | :07:15.
programme - ?NEWLINE They're off! The first athletes to make the grade | :07:15. | :07:18.
for team Scotland are unveiled for next year's Commonwealth Games. And | :07:18. | :07:22.
in sport: we've got a celebrity free preview of the big pro-celebrity | :07:22. | :07:25.
golf at St Andrews. And it's bigger than an upset, a | :07:25. | :07:29.
surprise or a shock - it's Morton's flabbergasting win over Celtic. More | :07:29. | :07:31.
on those stories later. The names of the first athletes to | :07:31. | :07:41.
make the grade for team Scotland ahead of next year's Commonwealth | :07:41. | :07:46.
Games have been announced. 27 competitors from athletics and | :07:46. | :07:49.
squash are the first to secure their places. The selection process | :07:49. | :07:52.
continues for others hoping to join them. Chris McLaughlin reports. | :07:52. | :08:02.
And now it is getting serious for those in the spotlight and in the | :08:02. | :08:07.
team. Glasgow's Winter Gardens is the venue, next summer is the | :08:07. | :08:12.
focus. The first names are now on the team sheet. Every one desperate | :08:12. | :08:17.
to represent their country. You don't get the opportunity to do it | :08:17. | :08:22.
very often. I'm sure it is going to be amazing. Having that home crowd | :08:22. | :08:27.
and wearing that best. It'll be fantastic. From athletes to | :08:27. | :08:33.
facilities and with the new hydro arena due to open, it is just | :08:33. | :08:37.
Hampden as the only game's venue to revamp. It is up to the | :08:38. | :08:42.
competitors. Is there extra pressure on the team Scotland because it is | :08:42. | :08:47.
in Glasgow? I don't think so. Every athlete will be different in how | :08:47. | :08:52.
they feel about it. For me, in some ways, once you get there and they | :08:52. | :08:56.
get into the atmosphere, you are so focused on your sport and I hope it | :08:56. | :09:01.
will be the opposite, I hope having the support and friendly faces will | :09:01. | :09:15.
hopefully give us an advantageous rather than extra pressure. This is | :09:15. | :09:17.
not just about naming names and putting together a team, it is about | :09:17. | :09:20.
keeping Glasgow 2014 in the spotlight. The organisers are saying | :09:20. | :09:22.
that the city is almost ready and so too is the team. It may be 300 days | :09:22. | :09:25.
away, but the Glasgow, the finishing line is in sight. | :09:25. | :09:29.
Union leaders and some politicians have renewed demands for a full | :09:29. | :09:32.
public inquiry into offshore helicopter safety following a series | :09:32. | :09:35.
of accidents. The calls came as three helicopter operators launched | :09:35. | :09:37.
their own review of safety practices. Bristow, CHC and Bond say | :09:38. | :09:44.
the exercise will "complement" the review announced yesterday by the | :09:44. | :09:48.
Civil Aviation Authority. MSPs have been debating | :09:48. | :09:51.
controversial plans to scrap the need for evidence to be backed up, | :09:51. | :09:54.
or corroborated, in criminal court cases. The Conservatives are calling | :09:54. | :09:59.
for a wider review of the laws of evidence to be carried out, arguing | :09:59. | :10:01.
that corroboration protects against miscarriages of justice. But the | :10:01. | :10:05.
Justice Secretary Kenny Macaskill told Parliament that abolition was | :10:05. | :10:08.
long overdue because corroboration was a barrier to obtaining justice | :10:08. | :10:15.
for the victims of crime. Holyrood's Justice Committee is continuing | :10:15. | :10:19.
scrutiny of the legislation. The first dedicated Gaelic primary | :10:19. | :10:22.
school in Edinburgh was officially opened today. Campaigners say the | :10:22. | :10:27.
creation of a school in the capital is a symbolic moment for Gaelic | :10:27. | :10:30.
education across Scotland. Only a few hundred children start out in | :10:30. | :10:34.
Gaelic schools and units every year, but as our education correspondent | :10:34. | :10:36.
Jamie McIvor reports, there are ambitious targets to increase this | :10:36. | :10:38.
number. Encourage more children to learn | :10:38. | :10:53.
Gaelic is crucial to diverse in the long-term decline of the language. | :10:53. | :10:56.
Campaigners across Scotland see the long-term decline of the language. | :10:56. | :11:01.
opening of Edinburgh first dedicated primary as a milestone. in terms of | :11:02. | :11:06.
encouraging Gaelic across Scotland, I don't need to encourage parents. I | :11:06. | :11:13.
cannot keep up with the demand. The challenge the Government is to meet | :11:13. | :11:18.
that demand. The new school replaces a smaller units. It was inside a | :11:18. | :11:22.
school where the other children were taught in English. | :11:22. | :11:34.
Gaelic medium education is simply about teaching youngsters Gaelic -- | :11:35. | :11:43.
isn't, it is about teaching every subject in Gaelic. Even in English | :11:43. | :11:51.
lessons, they will speak in Gaelic. Across Scotland, the target is to | :11:51. | :11:55.
double the dumb -- number of children. There are some challenges. | :11:55. | :11:59.
We need to make sure that there are enough teachers to meet demand. That | :11:59. | :12:05.
is something that hasn't really been prepared for. There are sceptics. | :12:05. | :12:13.
Some parents may question investment in Gaelic education when other parts | :12:13. | :12:20.
of the budget are facing cuts. The funding for this came up, I think, | :12:20. | :12:25.
from the Gaelic development fund that the Scottish Government has | :12:25. | :12:28.
ring fenced for that purpose, most of the funding for this school. | :12:28. | :12:32.
Frankly, if we don't act now to protect the language, we won't have | :12:32. | :12:38.
one to protect in the future. Census figures tomorrow will give an update | :12:38. | :12:43.
on the number of speakers, nobody is pretending that reversing | :12:43. | :12:45.
generations of decline is simple, but giving more children the chance | :12:45. | :12:50.
of a Gaelic education is a big part of the strategy to ensure the | :12:50. | :12:55.
language's feature. Other stories from across Scotland | :12:55. | :12:58.
this Wednesday. Police are treating as suspicious | :12:58. | :13:01.
the death of a man whose body was found in Glasgow city centre. The | :13:01. | :13:05.
body was found outside flats at Blythswood Court, near Argyle | :13:05. | :13:12.
Street, early this morning. A search has been taking place for a | :13:12. | :13:16.
missing hill walker in the Cuillin hills on Skye. He was reported | :13:16. | :13:19.
overdue last night by a family member. Skye Mountain Rescue and the | :13:19. | :13:22.
Stornoway Coastguard helicopter are involved in the operation. | :13:22. | :13:24.
Pentland Ferries has been forced to suspend its services between | :13:24. | :13:27.
Caithness and Orkney after their twin-hulled vessel, the Pentalina, | :13:27. | :13:29.
developed a problem with its propulsion system. It's understood | :13:29. | :13:33.
that one of the ship's propellers has been damaged. The company say | :13:33. | :13:37.
they hope to resume normal services on Monday. | :13:37. | :13:40.
Health experts are investigating two cases of Legionnaire's Disease in | :13:40. | :13:44.
North Ayrshire. Both patients are recovering well. It's not known | :13:44. | :13:48.
whether the cases are linked. Experts have ruled out a link with | :13:48. | :13:51.
compost. The pharmacy at Edinburgh Royal | :13:51. | :13:54.
Infirmary has been closed after effluent flooded an area of the | :13:54. | :13:57.
building earlier. Medicine is being brought in from the Western General | :13:57. | :14:01.
Hospital and a clean up operation is under way. | :14:01. | :14:05.
Plans have been approved for a £1.5 million re-vamp of the historic | :14:05. | :14:09.
Theatre Royal in Dumfries. The owners, the Guild of Players, plan | :14:09. | :14:12.
to create a performance complex fit for the 21st century. In brief | :14:12. | :14:23.
terms, there are five buildings here and we will join them together to | :14:23. | :14:27.
form a lovely new Theatre. They'll be a bar area, a studio area, an | :14:27. | :14:33.
area the dance, workshop facilities. It will be super. | :14:33. | :14:36.
One of Scotland's Maggie's Centres is celebrating its tenth birthday | :14:36. | :14:40.
today. The charity opened its Dundee centre in 2003. It's provided | :14:40. | :14:43.
support to thousands of cancer patients and their families at all | :14:43. | :14:46.
stages of their illness. And there are more stories from your | :14:46. | :14:50.
area, and all the latest news, 24 hours a day on BBC Scotland's | :14:50. | :14:52.
website. Teenagers with arthritis have made a | :14:52. | :15:06.
film, to alert health staff to a condition which they say is often | :15:06. | :15:09.
diagnosed too late. More than 2,000 children and young people in | :15:09. | :15:11.
Scotland suffer from arthritis, although it's generally considered | :15:11. | :15:14.
something that affects the elderly. Emma Ailes reports. | :15:14. | :15:25.
Lucy is four years old. She has had arthritis since she was 16 months | :15:25. | :15:30.
old. She went from being a normal, happy baby to a little girl who | :15:30. | :15:33.
could not move her neck, her fingers were swollen, she went from crawling | :15:34. | :15:41.
to not being able to move. Lucy was lucky, her condition was caught | :15:41. | :15:45.
early. Drugs help to control it and her toys are specially designed to | :15:45. | :15:50.
help with her physio therapy. Juvenile arthritis is rare and | :15:51. | :15:55.
difficult to spot. Some children go years without it being diagnosed. | :15:55. | :16:01.
This film was made by a group of young people with arthritis. Some of | :16:01. | :16:05.
them were in wheelchairs by the time they were teenagers. I have been to | :16:05. | :16:10.
five hospitals all over Scotland. No one could tell me what it was. We | :16:10. | :16:15.
knew exactly what it was when we saw it. There is a large lack of | :16:15. | :16:18.
knowledge about what arthritis means for young people. This is the | :16:18. | :16:25.
physiotherapy section of your kill hospital. This doctor says things | :16:25. | :16:32.
have already come a long way. Early recognition of arthritis in young | :16:32. | :16:35.
people in the path has been difficult because the public | :16:35. | :16:38.
perception is that children do not get arthritis. That is not the case. | :16:38. | :16:43.
Prompt treatment will it lead to better outcomes for young patients. | :16:43. | :16:47.
With new drugs and better training for doctors and health | :16:47. | :16:51.
professionals, treatment and diagnosis of childhood arthritis | :16:51. | :16:55.
improving all the time. But dealing with the physical symptoms is not | :16:55. | :16:59.
the only issue. Many children living with the disease say it can be an | :16:59. | :17:03.
isolating experience, they hope that sharing their stories on camera will | :17:03. | :17:12.
help them overcome that. David Currie is here with the sports | :17:12. | :17:17.
news. It was an unexpected result for one of the teams in the league | :17:17. | :17:20.
last night. That is an understatement! | :17:20. | :17:22.
It'll be remembered as one of the biggest upsets in Scottish football. | :17:22. | :17:26.
Celtic knocked out of the league cup by the team next to bottom in the | :17:26. | :17:30.
second tier of the SPFL - Morton. It was the Greenock club's first win at | :17:30. | :17:34.
Celtic Park since 1971, a result no-one - including the Morton | :17:34. | :17:40.
manager - expected. He had the chance to be a Martin | :17:40. | :17:45.
Heal. That could be the goal that sent Celtic crashing out of the | :17:45. | :17:50.
Scottish league cup. Shock, upset, no. Not really strong enough. How | :17:50. | :17:56.
about flabbergasted. A new magnitude of surprise result. Coined in part | :17:56. | :18:02.
by a jubilant Morton manager. Icon flabbergasted with what we did | :18:02. | :18:08.
today. We defended brilliantly. We are hoping we can use this as a | :18:08. | :18:11.
catalyst to start winning points in the league. We have told them not to | :18:11. | :18:17.
go out for a drink because they have to be professional. In Greenock this | :18:17. | :18:21.
afternoon, that flabbergasted word is on everyone's lips. I was | :18:21. | :18:26.
flabbergasted. I put a little bet on the home team as well. I said to my | :18:26. | :18:32.
wife, it must be among the top results Morton has ever had. My | :18:32. | :18:37.
family is all excited. We were in the pub having drinks. I was double | :18:37. | :18:45.
flabbergasted. Martin's reward for astonishing their supporters is a | :18:45. | :18:47.
place in tomorrow's water final draw. Who knows, perhaps further | :18:47. | :18:55.
flabbergasted mint awaits. I just invented that word. There is more | :18:55. | :19:00.
flabbergasting to be done and you will not miss it on the BBC. We have | :19:00. | :19:03.
live coverage of tonight's match. The Scotland midfielder Kim Little | :19:03. | :19:25.
says she's confident the women's team can make it to the World Cup. | :19:25. | :19:29.
The Arsenal Ladies star trained with her international team-mates at | :19:29. | :19:31.
Motherwell's Fir Park, ahead of tomorrow's World Cup qualifier there | :19:31. | :19:34.
against Bosnia-Herzegovina. For me it is one of the best Scotland teams | :19:34. | :19:36.
against Bosnia-Herzegovina. For me I have played in since I have been | :19:36. | :19:39.
here. We have got so much talent and so many players playing | :19:39. | :19:40.
professionally so our fitness levels are very high. We are ambitious and | :19:40. | :19:43.
we believe we can get to the World Cup. | :19:43. | :19:49.
Golf meets showbiz tomorrow at the annual Dunhill Links Championship. | :19:49. | :19:52.
It's one of the most unique events on the tour as it pits professional | :19:52. | :19:55.
with celebrity over three courses - St Andrews, Kingsbarns and | :19:56. | :19:58.
Carnounstie. Our golf reports, Phil Goodlad, is at the St Andrews for | :19:58. | :20:01.
us. Welcome to St Andrews. Rather an | :20:01. | :20:07.
autumnal feel here at the first and old course, but a man who will be | :20:07. | :20:11.
hoping to recreate his hot form of last is defending champion Branden | :20:11. | :20:15.
Grace. It must be quite a moment for you tomorrow when you stand on the | :20:15. | :20:19.
first and you are annexed as defending champion. Yes. It is | :20:19. | :20:27.
great. This is where it all started. This was my best win so far in my | :20:27. | :20:30.
career and what a better way to defend the championship. Home of | :20:30. | :20:35.
golf in St Andrews. You never know, at the end of the week it could be | :20:35. | :20:42.
the same situation as last year. Baby we take St Andrews for granted | :20:42. | :20:46.
but what is it like for a South African to come here to St Andrews | :20:46. | :20:52.
to play. -- maybe we take St Andrews for a grant it. It is great. I have | :20:52. | :20:58.
had some success here, obviously last year, and I have had some close | :20:58. | :21:01.
calls in Scotland as well so I have fond memories of Scotland. In this | :21:01. | :21:06.
event there are so many stars from the stage and screen, from other | :21:06. | :21:10.
sports, have you had your autograph book out? A little bit! There is a | :21:10. | :21:18.
lot of respect going around which is great and it is nice that the game | :21:18. | :21:21.
of golf is being played in this manner. Thank you. Before tomorrow, | :21:22. | :21:29.
we are going to swap autograph books to find out who each of us have got | :21:29. | :21:34.
here at St Andrews. I got Hugh Grant, did you get Andy Garcia? He | :21:34. | :21:40.
is a difficult man to get hold of. I played with Ian Botham once. You can | :21:40. | :21:46.
leave us now. I wonder if anyone asked for Phil | :21:46. | :21:53.
Goodlad's autograph! Chris has been carousing about the | :21:53. | :21:57.
country with the weather this week. We are you tonight? | :21:57. | :22:03.
We are in the Scottish Borders where it has been fairly cloudy and | :22:03. | :22:07.
drizzly today, a far cry from the summer months of weather, which were | :22:07. | :22:10.
so good. It increased the visitor numbers to this region. | :22:10. | :22:16.
We are in the beautiful Borders countryside, the river Tweed behind | :22:16. | :22:19.
me, Kelso in the distance and further still, the hills in the mist | :22:19. | :22:24.
there. The most imposing part of the landscape here is the castle. This | :22:24. | :22:28.
is a big employer in the region and the estate has had a very good year. | :22:28. | :22:32.
How is this for a front door to your house? This castle is the largest | :22:33. | :22:38.
inhabited castle in Scotland than 30,000 people annually come to take | :22:38. | :22:45.
a look inside. This is the anteroom, one of 12 rooms open to the public | :22:45. | :22:49.
out of 150 that make up the castle. Did you and the Duchess use this | :22:49. | :22:52.
trim every single day, they may have a drink in here before dinner. At | :22:52. | :22:56.
the end of the season, they get their sitting-room back. It cost | :22:56. | :23:03.
£500 per day alone to look after the maintenance of the castle so it is | :23:03. | :23:06.
very important to the family that they open it to the public to help | :23:06. | :23:10.
with those costs. The one in here is complaining about the weather | :23:10. | :23:12.
because the weather we saw during summer was so good that visitor | :23:13. | :23:17.
numbers were up. Some parts of the castle were up 25% and they did not | :23:17. | :23:20.
see the downturn that they did in 2012 back to the Olympics and Queens | :23:20. | :23:24.
to believe. I have it on good authority from the Butler's wife | :23:24. | :23:27.
that this is the drawing-room where you come to relax in the evening, | :23:27. | :23:34.
unless you're throwing a party. I think we might be having a party | :23:34. | :23:38.
tonight. Hopefully to encourage the sun to come out. What about the | :23:38. | :23:43.
weather? This evening, generally it is dry across most of the country | :23:43. | :23:49.
but it will be cold. There is very little in the way of cloud cover, | :23:49. | :23:53.
and across most of the country there is long, clear spells overnight, the | :23:53. | :23:58.
temperature falling away. It will be a cold night. Even in towns and | :23:58. | :24:02.
cities, ten to five Celsius and down through the Highlands, close to | :24:02. | :24:05.
freezing with the chance of Frost. Paul Flynn at the mist and fog | :24:05. | :24:09.
issues we have seen over the last few nights. -- hopefully not the | :24:09. | :24:14.
mist and fog issues. It will be a bright start tomorrow. As we head | :24:14. | :24:19.
through the day, some cloud bubbling up at times, particularly in the | :24:19. | :24:23.
South West. As we head through the middle of the afternoon, we can see | :24:23. | :24:27.
through Central and southeastern parts of the country, it should be | :24:27. | :24:30.
dry with some decent dry or sunny spells. Temperatures close to | :24:30. | :24:35.
average for this time of year. Cloudy in the south-west, the best | :24:35. | :24:40.
of the sunshine up in the north-west through parts of Lewis and Harris, | :24:40. | :24:43.
into Caithness and Orkney as well and further says. Temperatures close | :24:43. | :24:51.
to average for this time of year. It is cloudy in Shetland. Overnight, | :24:51. | :24:57.
there is little change, staying dry with the wind for most generally | :24:57. | :25:02.
light. We can see from the pressure charts that the weather front we | :25:02. | :25:05.
have had sinking its way southwards is making a return and that will | :25:05. | :25:08.
bring a fair amount of cloud on Friday. A cloudy day than what we | :25:08. | :25:14.
will see tomorrow. On Friday, it is a dry but cloudy day. There will be | :25:14. | :25:18.
outbreaks of rain likely across the north-west. Temperatures into the | :25:18. | :25:25.
mid and high teens, Saturday and Sunday it is largely dry but there | :25:25. | :25:28.
could be outbreaks of rain across the far north of the country. | :25:28. | :25:31.
Temperatures close to average for this time of year. It is not too bad | :25:31. | :25:36.
here at the moment, a lovely setting behind me. Imagine owning a house | :25:36. | :25:42.
like that! It is back to you in Glasgow. | :25:42. | :25:45.
like that! It is back to We thought that was your house! | :25:45. | :25:51.
Now, Newsnight Scotland is looking for audience members for an event | :25:51. | :25:59.
this coming Monday. They'll be discussing the role of the Arts and | :25:59. | :26:03.
Culture in Scotland, including, of course, the independence referendum. | :26:03. | :26:06.
Andrew Kerr will be joined by a panel of guests and if you want to | :26:06. | :26:09.
join them, go to bbc.co.uk/scotland, news and search for Newsnight | :26:09. | :26:12.

Scotland. Now, a reminder of tonight's main news in The Labour | :26:13. | :26:16.
leader is standing firm on his promise to freeze gas and | :26:16. | :26:19.
electricity prices for 20 months if Labour wins the next election - | :26:19. | :26:22.
insisting it's not an attack on business. Ed Miliband's plans have | :26:22. | :26:25.
led to a storm of protest from the energy suppliers, with some warning | :26:26. | :26:29.
of a threat to the country's energy security as well as possible power | :26:29. | :26:31.
cuts. The family of one of two cyclists | :26:31. | :26:34.
killed by an Edinburgh driver have said they're shocked and disgusted | :26:34. | :26:37.
his sentence has not been increased. Appeal judges rejected the crown's | :26:37. | :26:40.
argument that 49-year-old Gary McCourt should be jailed and banned | :26:40. | :26:47.
from driving for life. The names of the first athletes to | :26:47. | :26:51.
make the grade for Team Scotland ahead of next year's Commonwealth | :26:51. | :26:54.
Games have been announced. 27 competitors from athletics and | :26:54. | :26:57.
squash are the first to secure their places. The selection process | :26:57. | :26:59.
continues for others hoping to join them. And that's Reporting Scotland. | :26:59. | :27:05.
I'll be back with the headlines at 8- and the late bulletin just after | :27:05. | :27:08.
the ten o'clock news. Goodbye. | :27:08. | :27:13. |
