a million New Yorkers celebrated 2014 in the traditional way. There's

Good evening. Happy New Year. Celebrations have been taking place

throughout Scotland to welcome in new year. In Edinburgh more than

70,000 people attended the street party to mark the start of 2014.

Joanne Macaulay reports. The start of what is going to be an

eventful year for Scotland. In Edinburgh, 2014 arrived in style is

more than 70,000 people partied on the street. I'd say today was one of

the best street parties we have ever had. A combination of still wear bad

good-natured clouds. An exceptional line-up with lots of Scottish

artists as well as the Pet Shop Boys. There was nine arrests last

night all for minor disorder. Nothing of any significance and from

a police perspective the event went really well. Celebrations were

underway elsewhere. A simultaneous fireworks display to welcome in the

year of homecoming Scotland 2014. There was an invigorating start to

the New Year for the 1000 people at South Queensferry! Freezing but

beautiful. Refreshing! I can feel my feet. I am doing it for charity. For

my nephew who is having an operation. So warm right now!

For many the New Year brought the inevitable clean-up operation. At

other events in Edinburgh and across Scotland, the party atmosphere

continued for just a while longer. A woman was seriously sexually

assaulted in Edinburgh's old town at the height of the New Year

celebrations. The attack on the 21-year-old, happened in the

Canongate area between midnight and two thirty in the morning. The

suspect is described as being white and in his late teens or early 20s.

Police are appealing for anyone who saw anything suspicious to contact

them. New rules on recycling waste have

come into force for Scottish businesses today. The changes mean

that waste must be separated into paper, card, plastic, metals and

glass. And some businesses which produce more than 50 kilogrammes of

food waste each week must also recycle it. Those failing to comply

with the new laws risk a maximum fine of ?10,000.

Football. And there were four games in the Premiership today. Let's

introduce you to what is thought to be the first baby born in Scotland

in 2014. He was born at one minute after midnight.

From a bundle of joy to a bundle of gloom?

Hopefully an upbeat spin. The weather is almost dancing to

irregular beat with outbreaks of rain across the country and we still

have a yellow warning for rain through parts of southern Scotland

and also Perthshire. Difficult driving conditions and the

possibility of further flooding in areas already sensitive. These

showers have been extending into northern parts but it turns more
