firepower in military exercises. That is all from the BBC News at | :00:00. | 3:59:59
six. Tonight on Reporting Scotland: | :00:00. | :00:00.
Celebrating the life of Margo MacDonald. | :00:00. | :00:15.
More than a thousand people - family and friends - gather in the capital | :00:16. | :00:18.
to honour the veteran politician with music and memories. | :00:19. | :00:22.
Also tonight: A U-turn from the Confederation of British Industry. | :00:23. | :00:26.
The CBI says it won't now register as a campaigner against Scottish | :00:27. | :00:30.
independence. Labour's Shadow Cabinet comes to | :00:31. | :00:33.
Glasgow. Ed Miliband says he's happy to fight the SNP in the battle for | :00:34. | :00:42.
left-of-centre votes. Tributes to the Rangers, Hearts and | :00:43. | :00:45.
Scotland legend Sandy Jardin, who's died of cancer. In comparison with | :00:46. | :00:56.
some of the other great players of the world, you understood this | :00:57. | :01:01.
homebred product was equal of anybody. | :01:02. | :01:03.
And the Scots in Rome - preparing to celebrate Pope John-Paul II becoming | :01:04. | :01:04.
a saint. Good evening. Margo MacDonald's | :01:05. | :01:22.
dying wish was for Scotland to remain united whatever the outcome | :01:23. | :01:24.
of September's independence referendum. The message was conveyed | :01:25. | :01:30.
by her husband, Jim Sillars, at a memorial service in Edinburgh. | :01:31. | :01:33.
Friends, familiar faces and politicians from across public life | :01:34. | :01:36.
lined up to pay tribute with speeches, music, and jokes. Our | :01:37. | :01:41.
political editor, Brian Taylor, was there too. | :01:42. | :01:51.
They cute, they converged. Family, friends. They heeded the request for | :01:52. | :02:00.
a colourful sendoff. Tears of laughter and joy are permitted. Alex | :02:01. | :02:05.
Neill seemed close to breaking his own role. The last 31 years, Margo | :02:06. | :02:10.
MacDonald has been the flower of Scotland. More importantly for me, | :02:11. | :02:16.
she has been my loyal and true friend. I will miss her terribly. So | :02:17. | :02:26.
will Scotland. APPLAUSE. Crowds filled the assembly hall where | :02:27. | :02:29.
Scotland's first parliament met. There was a motion. There was | :02:30. | :02:37.
laughter as well. Elaine Smith brought growth and a reminder. Weigh | :02:38. | :02:42.
we cannot underestimate the power of Margo MacDonald on the political | :02:43. | :02:46.
scene, especially on young women from a class and sex that was not | :02:47. | :02:49.
represented or heard. Then to Jim Sillars, her husband. | :02:50. | :02:55.
Mother had fretted in her final days, but the referendum might leave | :02:56. | :03:01.
corrosive division. She wanted a close of polling to close that down. | :03:02. | :03:07.
At one minute past ten, whatever the result, she wanted those divisions | :03:08. | :03:12.
to enter, and this nation to seek the unity of purpose. | :03:13. | :03:20.
If Margo could tip date without conceding one iota of printable but | :03:21. | :03:27.
do so without venom, so can we all. -- debate. If she can respect the | :03:28. | :03:33.
rights of the other side, so can we all. Prolonged applause from both | :03:34. | :03:45.
sides in the referendum. Finally, the Proclaimers. | :03:46. | :03:52.
Appreciation from lifelong Hearts for humans. -- | :03:53. | :04:02.
Appreciation from lifelong Hearts fans. WOMAN SINGS TRADITIONAL SONG. | :04:03. | :04:18.
At the close, the ads from the start of the Scottish parliament. Margo | :04:19. | :04:23.
MacDonald's dying wish was to appeal to human -- united to prevail. | :04:24. | :04:34.
The CBI is to reverse its position as a registered campaigner opposed | :04:35. | :04:37.
to Scottish independence. The employers' organisation registered | :04:38. | :04:39.
last week with the Electoral Commission, allowing it to spend up | :04:40. | :04:43.
to ?150,000 in campaigning for a 'no' vote ahead of the referendum in | :04:44. | :04:46.
September. But several members then left. Why do you turn? It is quite | :04:47. | :04:54.
extraordinary. It began Wednesday of last week. The CBI registered with | :04:55. | :04:59.
the electro- commission as a nonparty participant on the no side | :05:00. | :05:04.
of the independence campaign. It had said it was already against | :05:05. | :05:08.
independence, but dismissed it to an official higher level. It put | :05:09. | :05:11.
several of its members in a difficult position, apart from | :05:12. | :05:16.
allowing it to spell ?150,000 on campaigning. Several companies that | :05:17. | :05:18.
wanted to be seen as a pupil pulled out. -- neutral. The BBC suspended | :05:19. | :05:28.
its membership of the CBI. In the past hour, we have had confirmation | :05:29. | :05:33.
that this was all a mistake. It did not get approved at the most senior | :05:34. | :05:36.
levels as it should've been. It was signed off by someone more junior | :05:37. | :05:40.
who should not have been qualified to do that. The CBI wants to | :05:41. | :05:48.
reverse, nano five! Nullify its registration. This is a deeply | :05:49. | :05:51.
embarrassing position for the director-general to explain as he | :05:52. | :05:55.
did a few minutes ago. It has been an extremely difficult with the | :05:56. | :06:00.
CBI. The CBI has had to learn the lessons of a mistake made. We have | :06:01. | :06:04.
regrouped as swiftly as record. We have taken legal -- legal advice so | :06:05. | :06:09.
we know what was said. We have identified a strategy for moving | :06:10. | :06:13.
forward, and we are that action forward. I say again, mistakes | :06:14. | :06:20.
happen in life. It may reverse that position, though its main critic | :06:21. | :06:23.
says it may not be allowed to withdraw from the position and has. | :06:24. | :06:28.
It has moved from shambles into farce. Even if it can withdraw from | :06:29. | :06:33.
the position, you will find it very hard to reverse the damage that has | :06:34. | :06:36.
been done to its reputation. Thank you. | :06:37. | :06:40.
The Labour leader, Ed Miliband, says he's happy to fight toe-to-toe with | :06:41. | :06:43.
the SNP in the battle for left-of-centre votes. In Glasgow for | :06:44. | :06:47.
a meeting of his Shadow Cabinet, he said a UK Labour government rather | :06:48. | :06:50.
than independence was the best route to what he called "social justice" | :06:51. | :06:53.
here. The First Minister, Alex Salmond, says it's time for Scotland | :06:54. | :06:56.
to take the future into its own hands. Here's our political | :06:57. | :07:04.
correspondent, Glenn Campbell. The campaign for a no vote here, the | :07:05. | :07:10.
Shadow challenge -- Chancellor Ed Balls. What do you think about this | :07:11. | :07:18.
referendum? I don't know. I haven't decided yet. Undecided on | :07:19. | :07:25.
independence, traditionally Labour. It is voters like this woman but | :07:26. | :07:29.
both sides in the referendum campaign considered key to the | :07:30. | :07:34.
outcome on September the 18th. Voted yes to reclaim the Labour Party. Won | :07:35. | :07:40.
APPLAUSE. The SNP made a pitch for Labour yes votes at their recent | :07:41. | :07:45.
conference. Today, Ed Miliband came to Glasgow's Commonwealth Games | :07:46. | :07:48.
arena to make labour's case for Scotland to stay in the UK. The | :07:49. | :07:53.
reality is that if Scotland left the United Kingdom, if we have been | :07:54. | :07:58.
competing against each other, it will be a race to the bottom in | :07:59. | :08:03.
terms of wages and tax rates. I'm happy to go toe to toe with the | :08:04. | :08:08.
SNP. I believe our proposals are far better. After a meeting, Mr Miliband | :08:09. | :08:13.
promised to curb the use of zero hours contracts if he wins power. It | :08:14. | :08:18.
is rivals in the Scottish Government that say they also want to take on | :08:19. | :08:21.
employers who hire staff without guaranteeing work. When we take the | :08:22. | :08:26.
future of our country into our own hands, that is in the Scottish ideas | :08:27. | :08:30.
and Scottish consensus on issues like the living wage and zero our | :08:31. | :08:34.
contracts can be brought forward. We need the power to improve things in | :08:35. | :08:37.
our own country and take on future into our own hands. Ed Miliband is | :08:38. | :08:44.
stepping up labour's referendum campaign effort amid some criticism | :08:45. | :08:48.
within the ranks of the edited together campaign that the party has | :08:49. | :08:51.
not been pulled in its wake. He denies that. The alliance that this | :08:52. | :08:58.
debate has shown with the Tories and Lib Dems has really worried a lot of | :08:59. | :09:03.
ours. In regards to the referendum debate, they are sleepwalking. More | :09:04. | :09:11.
questions from Labour supporters in Motherwell tonight. Mr Miliband says | :09:12. | :09:14.
he's confident but not complacent that Scotland will stick with the | :09:15. | :09:16.
UK. The world of Scottish football has | :09:17. | :09:19.
today been remembering one of its greatest figures. Sandy Jardine died | :09:20. | :09:23.
last night, at the age of 65 from cancer. He played for Rangers, | :09:24. | :09:27.
Hearts, and Scotland, and is perhaps best remembered for winning the | :09:28. | :09:30.
European Cup Winners' Cup with Rangers in 1972. Our sport | :09:31. | :09:34.
presenter, David Currie, is at Ibrox for us now. David, what's been | :09:35. | :09:41.
happening there today? Yes, Sally, people have been coming here most of | :09:42. | :09:45.
the day to pay their own personal tributes to Sandy Jardine, a man who | :09:46. | :09:48.
the Rangers manager Ally McCoist called a true club legend. | :09:49. | :10:03.
Remembering one of the greats, , some reflecting in silence, others | :10:04. | :10:11.
sharing memories. Sandy Jardine! Sandy Jardine played many games for | :10:12. | :10:16.
Rangers, winning three of the Sandy Jardine played many games for | :10:17. | :10:21.
champagne of the club's gritters win. He played up the front, he | :10:22. | :10:34.
played at the back. He scored on all the opposition. He played in two | :10:35. | :10:37.
world cups. He was a world-class player. Jardine also played and was | :10:38. | :10:45.
manager at Hearts, becoming Scotland player of the year in 1986. He was | :10:46. | :10:50.
in his late 30s. Another remarkable achievement in a remarkable career. | :10:51. | :10:56.
He played at the highest level in the world cups. When you saw him in | :10:57. | :11:01.
comparison at that level with some of the other great players in the | :11:02. | :11:04.
world, you understood that this homebred product was equal of | :11:05. | :11:12.
anybody. His peers remain to him as a player and a gentleman. We are | :11:13. | :11:18.
from different sides of the divide in Glasgow. He was a great man, a | :11:19. | :11:26.
tough opponent, eight footballer. You'd rather have him with | :11:27. | :11:30.
tough opponent, eight footballer. against you. His wife was a great | :11:31. | :11:36.
life, and he has left a lot of good memories behind. He was just Mr | :11:37. | :11:43.
perfect. Playing days behind him, he had a number of behind-the-scenes | :11:44. | :11:48.

he leaves behind his wife and two children. There will be a minute's | :11:59. | :12:01.
silence before the Rangers match against Stranraer here at Ibrox | :12:02. | :12:06.
tomorrow in memory of Sandy Jardine. I'll be back later in the programme | :12:07. | :12:10.
with the rest of the day's sports news, including news of Rangers | :12:11. | :12:19.
financial situation. See you then. Thank you very much. | :12:20. | :12:23.
The criminal justice system is failing to protect cyclists and | :12:24. | :12:25.
pedestrians, according to campaigners for a change in the law. | :12:26. | :12:29.
The claims are based on figures suggesting that only a small number | :12:30. | :12:32.
of collisions involving a motorist and a cyclist are referred to | :12:33. | :12:35.
prosecutors. Police say they'll always report an incident for | :12:36. | :12:37.
prosecution if there's enough evidence. Here's our transport | :12:38. | :12:43.
correspondent, David Miller. Scotland Street can be a hostile | :12:44. | :12:48.
place the cyclists. Constant vigilance is needed to avoid | :12:49. | :12:50.
collision. Figures vigilance is needed to avoid | :12:51. | :12:55.
safety campaigners say relatively few collisions involving cyclists | :12:56. | :12:58.
are referred to prosecutors. That has led to calls for a change in | :12:59. | :13:04.
all. Are lagging behind. We do not have some form of system of | :13:05. | :13:09.
liability. Cyclists and pedestrians are vulnerable road users and users | :13:10. | :13:15.
-- need as much protection as they can get, both from criminal law and | :13:16. | :13:20.
civil law. Air taxi has come around this road and broadsided me. The | :13:21. | :13:28.
campaigners want Scotland to adopt a system of presumed liability in | :13:29. | :13:32.
civil cases. Motorists would be liable for injury or damages unless | :13:33. | :13:36.
they could prove otherwise. Presumed liability will focus drivers' minds | :13:37. | :13:41.
that there are other road users, not just cars. Being a motorist myself, | :13:42. | :13:47.
you have to be aware that cyclists are vulnerable. The authorities are | :13:48. | :13:50.
not convinced. Transport Scotland seven this does not seem to be | :13:51. | :13:57.
robust evidence to suggest the liability will improve safety. I can | :13:58. | :14:02.
see how will work in Holland and France where there are | :14:03. | :14:04.
see how will work in Holland and cycling facilities, but in Scotland | :14:05. | :14:08.
see how will work in Holland and I don't there are readiness for | :14:09. | :14:09.
presumed liability. I don't there are readiness for | :14:10. | :14:14.
firmly on the political agenda. The transport minister has said he will | :14:15. | :14:17.
be taking part in tomorrow's pedal on Parliament protest ride. | :14:18. | :14:26.
Now let's take a look at other stories from around the country. | :14:27. | :14:29.
With less than three months to go until the start of the Commonwealth | :14:30. | :14:32.
Games, Glasgow 2014 has lost its Deputy Chief Executive. American Ty | :14:33. | :14:36.
Speer is to take up a new role overseas. He leaves having delivered | :14:37. | :14:39.
94% of the tickets sold, and with around 100 million pounds secured in | :14:40. | :14:42.
sponsorship deals. Glasgow 2014 says they will not be looking for a | :14:43. | :14:46.
successor. Police say enquiries are ongoing | :14:47. | :14:50.
after a fire damaged 21 cars at a car park servicing Edinburgh | :14:51. | :14:55.
Airport. The blaze broke out at the Queen Anne Drive car park at the | :14:56. | :14:58.
Lochend Industrial Estate in Newbridge early this morning. | :14:59. | :15:03.
The RAF has released images of two Russian aircraft picked up close to | :15:04. | :15:08.
UK airspace earlier this week. Typhoon fighters from RAF Leuchars | :15:09. | :15:10.
were scrambled to intercept the aircraft north of Shetland on | :15:11. | :15:15.
Wednesday. They've been identified as Russian TU-95 Bears on a routine | :15:16. | :15:17.
training exercise. as Russian TU-95 Bears on a routine | :15:18. | :15:27.
time, the growing fleet car show will be open to the | :15:28. | :15:31.
time, the growing fleet car show Saturday. The event aims to promote | :15:32. | :15:34.
low emission vehicles. The organisers say they are simply | :15:35. | :15:37.
responding to demand and growing interest right across Scotland in | :15:38. | :15:39.
green vehicles. Scotland's northernmost and newest | :15:40. | :15:41.
Search and Rescue helicopter has been named after one of its | :15:42. | :15:45.
predecessors. Oscar Charlie will be based in Shetland and replaces its | :15:46. | :15:48.
namesake which earned a place in the heart of the island community and | :15:49. | :15:52.
saved lives in the Piper Alpha and Braer oil tanker disasters. Oscar | :15:53. | :16:01.
Charlie has been part of the local community for the last 30 years, and | :16:02. | :16:06.
we thought with the new technology and with the UK search and rescue | :16:07. | :16:09.
contracts that it would be appropriate to have Oscar Charlie | :16:10. | :16:10.
back. Time for more sport, and it's back | :16:11. | :16:18.
to Ibrox stadium in Glasgow, and David Currie. | :16:19. | :16:22.
Rangers hope to raise up to ?30 million in the next three years. A | :16:23. | :16:26.
business review just published also accuses previous boards of | :16:27. | :16:29.
squandering tens of millions in a year and a half. Rangers say the | :16:30. | :16:38.
financial situation means staff redundancies are necessary. Our | :16:39. | :16:41.
senior football reporter Alasdair Lamont is here to tell us more. The | :16:42. | :16:50.
review paints a bleak picture. Bit does. It has been a gloomy day at | :16:51. | :16:54.
Rangers altogether. Not least for those that we will lose their jobs. | :16:55. | :16:59.
The board has been scathing of financial practices that have gone | :17:00. | :17:02.
on here up until the end of last year. Today's review States that ?70 | :17:03. | :17:13.
million was spent or misspent. Several players were brought in that | :17:14. | :17:19.
could not be afforded at the time. Contracts were offered on overly | :17:20. | :17:26.
generous terms. There were expensive purchases and a lack of financial | :17:27. | :17:30.
accountability. The Chief Executive has said today we have currently | :17:31. | :17:37.
less than ?3.5 million had any bank in December 2013. It has reiterated | :17:38. | :17:46.
the need for strong ticket sales. But also the ability to buy tickets | :17:47. | :17:58.
with debit and credit cards. They have said that strong ticket sales | :17:59. | :18:02.
are necessary for this club to keep going. | :18:03. | :18:09.
Is the plan to remedy the situation? The code release more shares to | :18:10. | :18:14.
current shareholders if they cannot sell enough season tickets. Beyond | :18:15. | :18:19.
that, we are looking at another share issue for the bulk of the ?30 | :18:20. | :18:24.
million they want to raise. How much they can realistically bring in, | :18:25. | :18:28.
having gone through that process, is up for debate. There are also | :18:29. | :18:36.
bringing in a new chief operating officer to oversee a new scouting | :18:37. | :18:42.
network. Also, the ambitious aim to bring the Premiership title back | :18:43. | :18:50.
here by the end of 2017. Now, a look at what else is | :18:51. | :18:53.
happening across Scottish sport. Glasgow and Edinburgh play tomorrow | :18:54. | :18:57.
in the Pro league at Scotstoun. It's also the 1872 Cup decider. Edinburgh | :18:58. | :19:00.
boosted by the return of captain Greg Laidlaw. | :19:01. | :19:03.
We are playing against a team that is doing well in the league and is | :19:04. | :19:08.
competing for a semifinal. We understand the challenge that lies | :19:09. | :19:10.
ahead. An important match tonight in the | :19:11. | :19:13.
Premiership in the race to avoid the play-off place. Partick Thistle take | :19:14. | :19:15.
on St Mirren. The Saints play-off place. Partick Thistle take | :19:16. | :19:18.
last time at Firhill. Live coverage on BBC Alba and on Radio Scotland. | :19:19. | :19:22.
Australia born Fiona Themann has swapped life down under to play | :19:23. | :19:25.
netball for Scotland. She made her debut against Trinidad and Tobago, | :19:26. | :19:29.
and it's all in tribute to her late father from Inverness. | :19:30. | :19:38.

On Sunday, Pope John Paul II will be made a saint. The Pole led the | :20:07. | :20:12.
Catholic Church for 27 years until his death in 2005. He became the | :20:13. | :20:16.
first Pope ever to visit Scotland in 1982 when hundreds of thousands | :20:17. | :20:18.
attended a Mass at Glasgow's Bellahouston Park. Many will gather | :20:19. | :20:21.
again this weekend to celebrate his sainthood, as Laura Maxwell reports. | :20:22. | :20:25.
Preparations are well under way in Rome ahead of the canonisation of | :20:26. | :20:32.
Pope John Paul II. 3 million people are expected to gather here, among | :20:33. | :20:36.
them these students from Glasgow. The school is named after Pope John | :20:37. | :20:44.
Paul II. All of the pupils are very aware and to mark the event we have | :20:45. | :20:49.
brought over 60 students to be present at the Mass for the | :20:50. | :20:53.
Kalamazoo Asian of our patron. It. Us a lot of different things and we | :20:54. | :20:58.
have a better understanding of why we are here. It has made us realise | :20:59. | :21:04.
how much of a privilege it is to be here. | :21:05. | :21:08.
In June 1982, they their thousands. | :21:09. | :21:14.
A phenomenal turnout here in Glasgow. Full stack John Paul II | :21:15. | :21:19.
became the first Pope to visit Scotland. It is estimated that one | :21:20. | :21:23.
in three Catholics attended the lowest in Glasgow. His visit | :21:24. | :21:28.
strengthened their ties to Rome. The church is: Does attempt to rebuild | :21:29. | :21:33.
those ties, following the sexual misconduct of Cardinal Keith | :21:34. | :21:36.
O'Brien. He was appointed by Pope John Paul II. Some critics said he | :21:37. | :21:40.
failed to address the wider issue during his papacy. For those who met | :21:41. | :21:50.
him, the Pope touched their lives. When we stand in front of the | :21:51. | :21:57.
Bishop, and he anoints you with the oil, my eyes were fixed on his eyes. | :21:58. | :22:02.
That is something I still remember. It was a special moment. | :22:03. | :22:07.
And another special moment will be shared out thousands here in | :22:08. | :22:08.
Scotland and Sunday. | :22:09. | :22:16.
Now let's get the weather. picture. The rain is making its way | :22:17. | :22:35.
up from England. It will be heavy at times overnight. It continues | :22:36. | :22:41.
northwards. This is what will happen after 8pm. The rain will work its | :22:42. | :22:50.
way northwards. A breezy night. The rain will be quite heavy. Not a cold | :22:51. | :22:59.
night. Around nine Celsius. To start the weekend, tomorrow morning will | :23:00. | :23:02.
be wet initially and windy. The rain will be heavy for a time in Aberdeen | :23:03. | :23:08.
and Inverness. Some dry weather behind that. Then wet again. The | :23:09. | :23:17.
rain loses its intensity as we move through the day. At 4pm tomorrow, | :23:18. | :23:24.
some sunshine in the South. Cloudy and cool along the East Coast. | :23:25. | :23:31.
Cloudy through parts of Perthshire and Tayside. In the North West, some | :23:32. | :23:36.
sunshine. But cloudy and damp for Orkney. Shetland should stay dry. | :23:37. | :23:43.
Periods of cloudy and damp weather to come. Winds from the East or | :23:44. | :23:52.
South East. 50 mph winds. Through parts of the Perthshire and Angus | :23:53. | :24:05.
hills, the same. Towards the east, a southeasterly wind. There will be | :24:06. | :24:14.
mist as well. Some late sunshine in the afternoon. But fairly cloudy and | :24:15. | :24:22.
damp. On Sunday, low pressure continues to stay with us. But the | :24:23. | :24:29.
easterly continues, so we have cloudy and cold conditions. Drier in | :24:30. | :24:34.
the West. The winds will be lighter. Next week, we'll be better, | :24:35. | :24:40.
thankfully. We lose the mist on the east coastal. Try and break for most | :24:41. | :24:46.
parts of the country. -- dry and bright. | :24:47. | :24:54.
And that's Reporting Scotland. Have a very good evening. | :24:55. | :25:00. |
