The best employment figures in a generation. | :00:00. | :00:09.
The number of people here in work is at its highest level | :00:10. | :00:12.
The last remaining Commonwealth Games tickets were due | :00:13. | :00:17.
to be sold on Monday but, after crashes and delays, | :00:18. | :00:20.
organisers admit it could be days before sales are up and running. | :00:21. | :00:25.

Over 40 inmates are involved in an overnight disturbance | :00:29. | :00:30.
As St Mirren's new leadership blends youth with experience, | :00:31. | :00:39.
the new man in the middle outlines his credentials. | :00:40. | :00:54.
There are a host of personalities. This includes them all. | :00:55. | :01:09.
The number of Scots in work has reached its highest | :01:10. | :01:12.
In the period between January and March, there were just over 2.5 | :01:13. | :01:18.
And, over the same period, the number of people out | :01:19. | :01:24.
Here's our economics correspondent, Colletta Smith. | :01:25. | :01:38.
When I grow up, I would like to be an athlete in the Olympics doing | :01:39. | :01:48.
gymnastics. I would like to be a physio in football. I would like to | :01:49. | :01:55.
be an interior designer. For those at the other end of the school | :01:56. | :01:58.
system, people sitting their Highers, the prospects of finding a | :01:59. | :02:07.
job are very real. Today's statistics show companies are taking | :02:08. | :02:11.
on new staff. That has been welcomed. It is great news and a | :02:12. | :02:17.
sign that the economy is moving into recovery mode. We are seeing really | :02:18. | :02:22.
strong recruitment activity across a number of sectors, ranging from oil | :02:23. | :02:29.
and gas through to renewables. Also the ICT and digital technology | :02:30. | :02:32.
sector. Really strong recruitment activity. They used to say that you | :02:33. | :02:43.
should be a lawyer or a doctor. Those days are gone. Software is | :02:44. | :02:47.
taking over everything across all sectors. This is something that | :02:48. | :02:51.
Scotland really has incredible talent at producing. We just need | :02:52. | :02:58.
more people. Today 's statistics show the Scottish and implement rate | :02:59. | :03:02.
is at 6.4%, lower than the 6.8% which is the average for the UK as a | :03:03. | :03:07.
whole. The number of people who were claiming the dole last month fell by | :03:08. | :03:12.
2000 compared with March. Today's figures are not only good news for | :03:13. | :03:16.
those who had jobs but they also reflect well on the Scotland economy | :03:17. | :03:20.
as a whole and that makes it much more likely the work dreams of these | :03:21. | :03:23.
children can be turned into reality in years to come. | :03:24. | :03:27.
The ticket provider for the Glasgow Commonwealth Games now say | :03:28. | :03:29.
it may take some days to resolve the problems with their website. | :03:30. | :03:33.
Yesterday, Glasgow 2014, in conjunction with Ticketmaster, | :03:34. | :03:35.
took the decision to shut it down after thousands | :03:36. | :03:37.
of people were unable to buy tickets because of technical problems. | :03:38. | :03:40.
Our Commonwealth Games reporter, Jane Lewis, joins me now. | :03:41. | :03:43.
This area behind me will be a hive of activity during the Games this | :03:44. | :04:00.
summer. It will host the gymnastics and also play host to the finals of | :04:01. | :04:04.
the boxing and the netball. Anyone who has been keen to try to get | :04:05. | :04:08.
their hands on any of the extra tickets made available for these | :04:09. | :04:12.
sports and for others well, they have not been able to do so today. | :04:13. | :04:17.
That is 24 hours on from Ticketmaster shutting down its | :04:18. | :04:23.
website. It has been contacted by Glasgow 2014 to provide tickets for | :04:24. | :04:28.
these Games. They did release a statement earlier today when they | :04:29. | :04:31.
talked about regretting any frustration that was caused to any | :04:32. | :04:35.
customers over the past two days. As I say, that statement was released | :04:36. | :04:38.
earlier this morning. A short time ago, Glasgow 2014 has released a | :04:39. | :04:45.
statement. They say improvements will be made to the website if | :04:46. | :04:51.
needed. They also at this. They say, once this review is complete and any | :04:52. | :04:56.
measures have been implemented and tested, we will be in a position in | :04:57. | :04:59.
the coming days to advise when ticket sales will be back up and | :05:00. | :05:04.
running. Of course, some people did manage to get their hands on tickets | :05:05. | :05:09.
before the website shut down yesterday, 24 hours ago now. Around | :05:10. | :05:14.
60,000 of those available tickets have been sold. There were many, | :05:15. | :05:18.
many other people who were left frustrated. It has to be said those | :05:19. | :05:23.
frustrations have been felt by many. Many people have been offering words | :05:24. | :05:27.
of sympathy, none other than the first minister Alex Salmond. He said | :05:28. | :05:30.
today that while he was sympathetic, it shows that everyone | :05:31. | :05:34.
wants to get in on the Glasgow 2014 act. He says, such was the demand | :05:35. | :05:36.
for these tickets. The company that operates | :05:37. | :05:40.
Grangemouth has announced that it has been granted planning permission | :05:41. | :05:43.
for the largest ethane tank Ineos say it will help secure the | :05:44. | :05:46.
future of the petrochemical plant What is the significance | :05:47. | :05:49.
of this announcement? Last Christmas I went to Norway to | :05:50. | :06:04.
see what the future of Grangemouth could look like. They have built an | :06:05. | :06:08.
enormous tanks they could be the first in Europe to import cheap | :06:09. | :06:13.
shell gas from the United States to process into plastics. These are the | :06:14. | :06:17.
plastics that are used to going to milk bottles. It is more than 100 | :06:18. | :06:23.
feet tall. The One Show Grangemouth will be twice that size. -- the one | :06:24. | :06:28.
at Grangemouth. Even after shipping, the shell gas will cost half the | :06:29. | :06:32.
price of the North Sea gas they currently use costs. You can see | :06:33. | :06:39.
there will be a big saving. The petrochemical side of the plant was | :06:40. | :06:44.
nearly shut down. After a dispute between management and the union, | :06:45. | :06:48.
workers signed up to a survival plan and the huge tank is part of that | :06:49. | :06:53.
plan, to secure the jobs. The company says it could secure the | :06:54. | :06:58.
site for the next 15 years. Not everyone is welcoming it? Concern | :06:59. | :07:06.
has been expressed. The company has said it is essential to keep the | :07:07. | :07:12.
business going at Grangemouth and it need not always been from America. | :07:13. | :07:16.
Therein lies another controversial debate about the ethics of fracking | :07:17. | :07:21.
for shale gas. For now, this means that Grangemouth has gone from | :07:22. | :07:24.
almost closing down last year to having a future. | :07:25. | :07:27.
You're watching Reporting Scotland from the BBC. | :07:28. | :07:29.
Still to come on tonight's programme... | :07:30. | :07:30.
How work on a rural bypass in the south west turned up a treasure | :07:31. | :07:34.
In the sport, the new man in charge of St Mirren says he has no problem | :07:35. | :07:46.
taking over from his former boss. More on that and, if Eurovision was | :07:47. | :07:53.
not to your taste, how about this? Yes, I am afraid the Cup Final songs | :07:54. | :07:59.
from Dundee United and St Johnstone have been recorded. | :08:00. | :08:05.
No ifs, no buts, the words of the Chancellor, George Osborne today, as | :08:06. | :08:13.
he insisted no deal will ever be reached which will allow Scotland to | :08:14. | :08:16.
use the pound in the event of independence. He was giving evidence | :08:17. | :08:20.
to the Commons Scottish affairs committee. The first minister said | :08:21. | :08:24.
his position was a campaign gambit which had failed to sway voters | :08:25. | :08:29.
against independence. Our Westminster correspondent reports. A | :08:30. | :08:35.
new campaign unveiled amid reports of concerns over strategy and | :08:36. | :08:39.
denials from Downing Street as too negative. It comes three months | :08:40. | :08:41.
after the Chancellor ruled out the Scottish Government plans to share | :08:42. | :08:46.
the pound after Scottish independence. Today he restated the | :08:47. | :08:50.
position, rejecting claims by the Scottish affairs committee that the | :08:51. | :08:55.
move may have alienated Scots voters. There will not be a currency | :08:56. | :09:00.
union. That is not just my position, it is the position of the Labour | :09:01. | :09:05.
Party and the Liberal Democrats. Any combination you can possibly imagine | :09:06. | :09:08.
of a British Government for the foreseeable future has ruled this | :09:09. | :09:15.
option out. The senior Treasury official who advised against this | :09:16. | :09:18.
was sitting alongside. Both mental the committee will be huge practical | :09:19. | :09:23.
financial consequences if Scotland wanted to use the pound without | :09:24. | :09:32.
agreement. We have had a procession of economists calling these | :09:33. | :09:35.
arguments ridiculous. We have had senior government ministers quoted | :09:36. | :09:39.
as saying, of course there will be a currency union. This is just a | :09:40. | :09:44.
gambit for the campaign. I think the reaction among the Scottish people | :09:45. | :09:52.
for these edicts among -- from on high says that began bit of George | :09:53. | :09:58.
Osborne has failed. It is about the pound in your pocket. Mr Osborne use | :09:59. | :10:03.
the formal surroundings of the Commons committee to say he was not | :10:04. | :10:07.
laughing. Voters have for months to decide who they think is telling the | :10:08. | :10:16.
truth. -- laughing. An investigation is under way after prisoners were | :10:17. | :10:24.
involved in a disturbance. They had control of a unit at Grampian | :10:25. | :10:31.
prison. Damage to the unit has been described as considerable. From the | :10:32. | :10:37.
outside, just a few clues to what has been going on in the new | :10:38. | :10:40.
Grampian prison. Although there is no obvious sign of a disturbance to | :10:41. | :10:45.
those passing this new jail, activity levels have been higher | :10:46. | :10:50.
than normal. This is the prison on the inside, just a few weeks ago, | :10:51. | :10:54.
when the first inmates arrived. Around 9pm yesterday, some prisoners | :10:55. | :11:00.
began vandalising some of the 60s and fittings, staff were treated and | :11:01. | :11:04.
locked them behind one of these sets of bars. They remained there for | :11:05. | :11:08.
more than 13 hours until this latest in a series of incidents was brought | :11:09. | :11:14.
under control. I do not think it is right to categorise it as a problem. | :11:15. | :11:19.
You do get some incidents and teething problems in any new | :11:20. | :11:22.
establishment. Historically that has been the case. What we have seen | :11:23. | :11:27.
here today is blatant disregard for those people behaving in a manner | :11:28. | :11:32.
that is totally unacceptable. 41 prisoners, who are in the | :11:33. | :11:35.
accommodation block, are in the process of being moved to other | :11:36. | :11:39.
jails. The Scottish Prison Service says the amount of damage caused was | :11:40. | :11:43.
considerable. Police will examine what happened with a view to | :11:44. | :11:48.
prosecuting. The Prison Service said inmates did not voluntarily end | :11:49. | :11:51.
their disturbance this morning. Instead, a specially trained team of | :11:52. | :11:55.
staff entered the accommodation block, wearing body armour and | :11:56. | :12:09.
helmets, and retook control. That said, the Prison Service points out | :12:10. | :12:13.
that no staff or inmates were injured. | :12:14. | :12:16.
A look at other stories from the across the country: | :12:17. | :12:19.
Inverness Prison has problems with overcrowding, according to the Chief | :12:20. | :12:21.
Following an inspection in February, his report says it was holding 26 | :12:22. | :12:26.
more prisoners than its 103 capacity, and that the | :12:27. | :12:29.

He was recovered from the water by his colleague and airlifted to the | :12:41. | :12:44.
A developer has cleared the first hurdle to turn one | :12:45. | :12:51.
of Perth's most historic civic buildings into a luxury hotel. | :12:52. | :12:54.
The City Hall, built a century ago, has lain empty for nearly ten years. | :12:55. | :12:58.
Arguments have raged over its future, | :12:59. | :13:00.
Now a council committee is recommending planning consent is | :13:01. | :13:05.
granted to develop the building as a five-star hotel. | :13:06. | :13:14.
We have to decide the process will be. As far as I'm aware, we will | :13:15. | :13:22.
have to apply to remove that application to demolish this. Beyond | :13:23. | :13:28.
that, council may have to decide whether they will not be building | :13:29. | :13:31.
back. Councillors in Aberdeen have been | :13:32. | :13:34.
discussing a bylaw to deal with The Labour-led administration says | :13:35. | :13:37.
something needs to be done to protect public places | :13:38. | :13:41.
from being used. The SNP has branded | :13:42. | :13:42.
the move discriminatory. This year's Edinburgh Jazz | :13:43. | :13:46.
Blues Festival is promising 140 gigs Venues across the capital will | :13:47. | :13:50.
host musicians from around the The organisers say it's | :13:51. | :13:54.
the most ambitious programme yet. Immigration often features | :13:55. | :14:09.
in the debate over the future of the European Union, | :14:10. | :14:12.
because as the EU has expanded and new countries have joined, | :14:13. | :14:14.
more people have had the right to With the European Parliament | :14:15. | :14:17.
elections just over a week away, our political correspondent, | :14:18. | :14:22.
Glenn Campbell, has been asking if free movement has | :14:23. | :14:23.
been good for Scotland or not. Whether they come bypass or by boat, | :14:24. | :14:35.
plane or train, every EU citizen has the right to travel to this or any | :14:36. | :14:43.
other EU country to live and work. SNP say Scotland needs to attract | :14:44. | :14:47.
more talent to thrive. Scotland is not full. We know one of our | :14:48. | :14:52.
challenges is to grow our working age population so we can support and | :14:53. | :14:56.
sustain the services needed for our ageing population. The UKIP message | :14:57. | :15:04.
could not be more different. They want out of the EU, and tablet -- | :15:05. | :15:08.
tougher immigration controls than any of the four largest Scottish | :15:09. | :15:13.
parties. Witham it is clear people in Scotland they got the whole they | :15:14. | :15:16.
should be slightly less immigration then there is now. They also want to | :15:17. | :15:20.
make sure they have public services that are well staffed and have | :15:21. | :15:24.
qualified doctors and nurses. A recent poll for the migration | :15:25. | :15:29.
observatory at Oxford University suggested that Scotland is indeed | :15:30. | :15:33.
more positive about immigration then England and Wales. But a clear | :15:34. | :15:38.
majority of those asked still said that immigration should be reduced. | :15:39. | :15:43.
It is something on the doorstep. People feel they are worried about | :15:44. | :15:51.
their workplaces and opportunities. That can sometimes be translated | :15:52. | :15:56.
into a fear of others. We believe it is scapegoating other people. Only | :15:57. | :15:59.
7% of Scottish residents were born outside the UK, and less than half | :16:00. | :16:06.
of them, 158,000, are from other European Union countries. What is | :16:07. | :16:11.
clear is that Scotland's people like having the benefit of being in | :16:12. | :16:16.
Scotland and we are very tolerant about people coming here as well. | :16:17. | :16:21.
The Scottish Greens have also put welcoming Europeans at the centre of | :16:22. | :16:27.
their campaign. The six new MPs will send representatives to Brussels and | :16:28. | :16:31.
Strasbourg will be elected next Thursday. | :16:32. | :16:36.
Let's turn our attention to sport and get the round-up from David. | :16:37. | :16:39.
St Mirren's new manager Tommy Craig says he had no hesitation | :16:40. | :16:42.
Craig was Lennon's assistant until Monday, when Lennon was told | :16:43. | :16:46.
The new boss says he wants the team to continue playing | :16:47. | :16:51.
Meet the three bodies. The new boss but to be more consistent. | :16:52. | :17:02.
Meet the three bodies. The new boss and player encourages. They all seem | :17:03. | :17:14.
surprised to get the gig. I'm grateful to Danny, who brought me to | :17:15. | :17:19.
the club in the first place, and now I find myself in the number one | :17:20. | :17:23.
position. It is sad to see Danny Reeve, and then gaining the | :17:24. | :17:28.
opportunity, but we both have a good relationship. The whole thing has | :17:29. | :17:37.
been crazy, to be honest for stop it was something offered to us, and | :17:38. | :17:42.
opportunity we could not turn down. Do you have any thoughts? We are | :17:43. | :17:53.
obviously standing here as part of a management team, so it is great. | :17:54. | :18:00.
While St Mirren were helped to win by Denny last year, the league form | :18:01. | :18:06.
in the season just ended was patchy. The new regime's major is | :18:07. | :18:10.
consistency with style. People will say it is all about results, and I | :18:11. | :18:15.
agree with that, but surely along the way we could give the public | :18:16. | :18:19.
something they will enjoy watching. We owe them that. We were to get | :18:20. | :18:22.
cracking on talking to a number of players, and then recruiting players | :18:23. | :18:28.
into the club. Anyone signed up since taking over? That is none of | :18:29. | :18:36.
your business. That is made back in my place. | :18:37. | :18:38.

That is how we found ourselves so high up the league by putting | :18:59. | :19:11.
experienced players there on the day. We need to make sure it comes | :19:12. | :19:14.
together and that we work together and that we click. We have a chance | :19:15. | :19:21.

uncovering the secrets of the other. I see a dense landscape of | :21:09. | :21:12.
archaeology from 9000 years ago. Neolithic over there. You could see | :21:13. | :21:18.
the road arcing through a landscape dominated by major ceremonial | :21:19. | :21:25.
sites, with a landscape dominated by the past. When plans were approved | :21:26. | :21:31.
to divert the A75, archaeologists were applied to investigate this | :21:32. | :21:37.
during construction. They unearthed a prehistoric treasure trove. They | :21:38. | :21:45.
are series of Neolithic stone and flint items. The newest from the | :21:46. | :21:51.
Bronze Age, like this cremation urn. Most remarkably, two magnificent | :21:52. | :21:58.
necklace is made of jet. Spectacular places like these with being the | :21:59. | :22:01.
possessions of the wealthiest members of society, probably from | :22:02. | :22:08.
female graves, and they are important because they would have | :22:09. | :22:12.
been imported all the way from Yorkshire. This is particularly | :22:13. | :22:16.
important because it's the first group of fines from the south-west | :22:17. | :22:20.
of Scotland. The remains are exciting. If you look at some of the | :22:21. | :22:24.
stone tools, they don't look spectacular, but in many ways, they | :22:25. | :22:29.
are an expression of someone's daily activity. You can most see their | :22:30. | :22:33.
hands wrapped around the tools now, so in many ways, it is like reaching | :22:34. | :22:38.
back through time and shaking hands with them. | :22:39. | :22:41.
Conservation and examination of the artefacts is likely to shed new | :22:42. | :22:48.
light on a whole series of Galloway's old civilisations. | :22:49. | :22:51.
What can we expect from the weather? Christopher can tell us. | :22:52. | :22:58.
Hello. Fairly cloudy at the moment. It will be a cloudy evening and | :22:59. | :23:05.
night. Mark to the last night. A week weather front trying to push | :23:06. | :23:09.
its way in with patchy light rain at times. Something more persisted for | :23:10. | :23:14.
Shetland. Cloudy and dry for many, and milder than last night. Sunspots | :23:15. | :23:21.
were subzero. Around nine to 11 degrees. Misty and murky at times. | :23:22. | :23:25.
Thursday, I pressure to the south. That will keep the weather front of | :23:26. | :23:30.
the mainland, which means most of the country tomorrow largely dry. | :23:31. | :23:33.
Early rain in the north-east, but Backley quiz away. After a cloudy | :23:34. | :23:38.
start, it should improve, with the cloud tending to thin and break with | :23:39. | :23:42.
sunshine coming through. There are great deal milder, and moisture in | :23:43. | :23:47.
it, so we will feel warmer. Whence the sun gets through, 17, 18 or 19 | :23:48. | :23:52.
degrees is possible. Not too bad at all. The West Coast cloud upper | :23:53. | :23:58.
colon. Add to Orkney and Shetland, that is where the weather front was, | :23:59. | :24:01.
and you could see patchy outbreaks of rain. More of a breeze from the | :24:02. | :24:08.
south-west as well. The rest of the afternoon into the evening, little | :24:09. | :24:12.
in the way of change. A pleasant and mild into the day. Friday, and the | :24:13. | :24:16.
high pressure is still with this down towards the south. Holding this | :24:17. | :24:19.
weather front up towards the north-west, it means the rest of the | :24:20. | :24:24.
mainland has another large dry day. It will be a cloudy stab at times, | :24:25. | :24:28.
but once again, the cloud will thin and break. The sun will come | :24:29. | :24:34.
through, and it will be warm. Add to 21 degrees possible. That cold front | :24:35. | :24:37.
in the north-west bringing rain in towards the Outer Hebrides. For the | :24:38. | :24:41.
weekend, there is that cold front sitting across the country. A bit | :24:42. | :24:46.
depth at times, but not a wash-out. Overnight, Saturday to Sunday, the | :24:47. | :24:59.
next weather front works its way in. It will be wet overnight, and then | :25:00. | :25:01.
Sunday morning, cloud and rain and wind, but for the next couple of | :25:02. | :25:04.
days, the sun will come out and will feel warm. That is the forecast. | :25:05. | :25:08.
Now, a reminder of tonight's main news: | :25:09. | :25:10.
The number of Scots in work has reached its highest | :25:11. | :25:12.
In the period between January and March, there were just over 2.5 | :25:13. | :25:17.
And over the same period, the number of people out | :25:18. | :25:21.
The government in Turkey has declared three days | :25:22. | :25:25.
of national mourning after nearly 250 miners were killed | :25:26. | :25:27.
in an explosion and fire at a coal mine in the west of the country. | :25:28. | :25:37. |
