Breaking news tonight: Unconfirmed reports suggest a

number of spectators have been seriously injured in a serious crash

at a motor rally in the Borders. The annual Jim Clark Rally takes place

on closed-off public roads between Kelso and Duns. It's believed

emergency services and an air ambulance have been sent to the

scene at Swinton, near Coldstream. Competitiors in the rally were due

to pass though the area in the middle of the afternoon.

After six years of disruption and budget disputes, Edinburgh's trams

have taken their first paying customers from the airport to the

city centre. It was standing room only on the first departure at 5am.

Keen to get on board, these people had queued to take part in part of

Edinburgh's history. Extra services were added during the day. At your

were rickety. They bumped along every inch of the road. It has been

the trams today. Good fun. It has not been such a smooth ride.

doubled, the network has halved, and it has taken twice as long to build

as planned. Visuals are now looking to that behind them.

We hope that going forward this will become part of normal life in the

city and we can reflect on what has happened in the past but very much

concentrate on the future and how we can benefit from this.

There are still criticism about how the project was handled but if

successful, the tram network could be extended in the future. One

business owner hoped that would not be the case. The Mac I am concerned

that if construction returns, it will cause disruption.

For now, the trams are rolling away from the problems of the past.

Police have started an investigation into a sexual assault carried in

Glasgow. A 35-year-old woman was attacked in Kelvingrove Park

Eight adventurers from Skye are back on dry land after rowing 100 miles

from St Kilda in a century-old wooden skiff. They left the remote

island early yesterday morning, and they were welcomed home by a large

crowd at Portree harbour this morning.

The weather was tremendous. We had been waiting for this window. It was

ideal, with a westerly breeze behind us all the way from Saint Kilda to

Harris. We got into day and it was like glass there.

A lovely day with plenty of sunshine. 21 degrees around Loch

Ness. You can see it is largely dry across most of the country. Some

thicker cloud across parts of the Western Isles. Sunday will be

cloudier than today. Some rain moving from the West. Temperatures

around 18 degrees. Not too bad. Turning unsettled next week.
