Tonight on Reporting Scotland: 100 days to go until the independence | :00:07. | :00:14.
referendum. Both sides in the debate had been putting forward their | :00:15. | :00:18.
arguments, as the campaign hots up to try to persuade the voters. We | :00:19. | :00:26.
should definitely go for it. We have a lot to gain from staying together. | :00:27. | :00:31.
We will be assessing how both campaigns are doing, with the vote | :00:32. | :00:38.
approaching. Allegations that babies and adults | :00:39. | :00:41.
were cremated together at this Aberdeen crematorium. | :00:42. | :00:46.
After another sex attack on a woman in Glasgow, a midnight protest is | :00:47. | :00:49.
being held to highlight growing concerns. | :00:50. | :00:54.
And she was a champion in her own right, but can Andy Moray's new | :00:55. | :00:58.
coach inspire him to win more grand slam titles. | :00:59. | :01:09.
It's a sigificant date among a host of significant dates, but | :01:10. | :01:13.
today the sides in the independence debate used the 100-days marker to | :01:14. | :01:17.
There was an unexpected intervention from the former prime minister | :01:18. | :01:21.
Gordon Brown, who accused his fellow pro-union parties | :01:22. | :01:24.
We have a series of reports, incuding an analysis | :01:25. | :01:30.
of the most recent polling surveys, but first to our political | :01:31. | :01:35.
correspondent Glenn Campbell. Tell us about Gordon Brown's remarks. | :01:36. | :01:44.
In a briefing not here at Holyrood but when spinster, Gordon Brown | :01:45. | :01:55.
suggested that some of the Treasury plans to persuade Scots to vote | :01:56. | :02:01.
Unknowingly referendum had been patronising. -- at Westminster. He | :02:02. | :02:07.
said it could turn it into a versus Britain battle and that was a losing | :02:08. | :02:13.
ticket. He also said it would be a good idea if his successor as prime | :02:14. | :02:18.
minister, David Cameron, agreed to a head-to-head debate with First | :02:19. | :02:22.
Minister Alex Salmond. That delighted Mr Salmond. It will | :02:23. | :02:24.
probably go down less well in Downing Street. They have been | :02:25. | :02:34.
trying to subcontract the debating to the leader of the Better Together | :02:35. | :02:39.
campaign. The 100 independence supporters who | :02:40. | :02:43.
gathered to create this image know exactly how they are voting. They | :02:44. | :02:47.
want to persuade a majority of Scots to join them. Yes Scotland campaign | :02:48. | :02:53.
is know they have work to do if they are to win, but they say support is | :02:54. | :03:01.
growing. Today we are close to 800,000 people signing the Yesterday | :03:02. | :03:04.
declaration. That is fantastic. We believe we will get to the 1 million | :03:05. | :03:11.
target. In Edinburgh, female members of the Scottish Cabinet, seeking to | :03:12. | :03:18.
reassure women voters, who tend to be more sceptical about independence | :03:19. | :03:23.
than men. We will always have the security of being in control of our | :03:24. | :03:28.
resources. We will have the job -creating powers we need an economic | :03:29. | :03:33.
policy that puts Scotland first. At a rival event in Glasgow, better | :03:34. | :03:37.
together supporters from across Scotland claimed to represent a | :03:38. | :03:41.
viewpoint shared by the majority of Scots. I know that sometimes we are | :03:42. | :03:47.
not as loud as the people campaigning for independence. We are | :03:48. | :03:50.
just everyday Scottish people who believe that the best future for | :03:51. | :03:54.
Scotland is as part of the UK. APPLAUSE | :03:55. | :04:00.
The leader of their campaign insists that a no vote would not be a vote | :04:01. | :04:07.
for no change. It is clear that a No vote will bring more powers to | :04:08. | :04:12.
Scotland within the United Kingdom. Now all three of the Scottish party | :04:13. | :04:18.
is backing a No vote has put forward broadly similar proposals for more | :04:19. | :04:22.
powers. They hope that this will persuade most voters to politely | :04:23. | :04:26.
declined the possibility of making Scotland a fully independent | :04:27. | :04:31.
country. It is the puts of up to 4 million Scottish residents that will | :04:32. | :04:36.
settle this question and the rival campaigns now have just 100 days | :04:37. | :04:40.
left to help those who are still decided make up their minds. -- it | :04:41. | :04:45.
is the votes of up to 4 million Scottish residents. | :04:46. | :04:49.
Our political editor Brian Taylor has spent the day in Dundee. | :04:50. | :04:52.
Brian, both sides in the campaigns, then, making that big push for votes | :04:53. | :04:56.
Yes, down the decades Dundee Square has seen political battles, but | :04:57. | :05:06.
nothing as big as this one. We are talking about the future of | :05:07. | :05:10.
Scotland. I am joined by my two guests. Your key off is the really | :05:11. | :05:17.
industrialisation of cities like Dundee, but that was your offer in | :05:18. | :05:27.
the 2011 manifesto, wasn't it? Independence will mean having | :05:28. | :05:30.
control over our own vast resources that Scotland has, to be able to be | :05:31. | :05:36.
industrialised Scotland. Without the key levers of economic powers we can | :05:37. | :05:43.
do some things... This city has been transformed under the SNP, but we | :05:44. | :05:47.
need the economic levers of control to be able to transform Scotland. | :05:48. | :05:51.
You are arguing that there can be change brought about by a Labour | :05:52. | :05:56.
Government at the UK level. You say you can change the nation without | :05:57. | :05:59.
changing the nationality, but Scotland alone cannot in that | :06:00. | :06:04.
about? They can vote for way, Labour, but may end up with a Tory | :06:05. | :06:10.
Government when the votes elsewhere are counted? I did with one change | :06:11. | :06:16.
in our communities and by blending Labour powers at Scottish level, we | :06:17. | :06:21.
can do that. Alex Salmond has been saying for years, I cannot do | :06:22. | :06:24.
anything because I do not have the full powers. He has a lot of power | :06:25. | :06:30.
he's not using at the moment. Two years ago he promised 750 renewables | :06:31. | :06:35.
jobs in Dundee and he has not put his money where his mouth is. This | :06:36. | :06:40.
comment by Gordon Brown, he says there can be something as eight | :06:41. | :06:46.
patronising tone -- something of a patronising tone. It is hardly great | :06:47. | :06:52.
for the Better Together campaign. I Think Gordon Is An Excellent Leader. | :06:53. | :06:56.
He Has Brought A Lot To This Debate. I Would Like To See Alistair Darling | :06:57. | :07:00.
Debating David Cameron Over This Question. | :07:01. | :07:05.
Isn't He Pointing Out A Good Point, That This Is A Decision For The | :07:06. | :07:11.
People Of Scotland To Take? I think there should be a debate and perhaps | :07:12. | :07:15.
now Alistair Darling will think again. But Jenny Marra makes her | :07:16. | :07:21.
case for us because what we need is a control over the energy policy to | :07:22. | :07:34.
have the job creation powers. There is no evidence that there is a | :07:35. | :07:38.
greater tax take in an independent Scotland to deliver these... Thank | :07:39. | :07:42.
you both very much indeed. That is the view of the political leaders | :07:43. | :07:45.
here in Dundee but it is the people who have the vote and the decision. | :07:46. | :07:54.
I have been to the streets of my native Dundee to find out what | :07:55. | :07:57.
people are saying. This has long been a city of | :07:58. | :08:01.
choices. You can arrive in Dunblane by the rail bridge or the road | :08:02. | :08:06.
bridge. In the city you can choose Dundee University or Abertay | :08:07. | :08:10.
University. Two bridges, two universities, one football team. | :08:11. | :08:15.
Only joking. There is another one of the road. Over the centuries, this | :08:16. | :08:21.
ancient city has known conflict and dilemma. Now its citizens, like all | :08:22. | :08:28.
across Scotland, face a big choice. That is why my old school there, the | :08:29. | :08:34.
High School Of Dundee traces its history back to 1239. It is said | :08:35. | :08:37.
that one of the earliest pupils was William Wallace, the great Father of | :08:38. | :08:42.
Scotland. Scottish independence still appeals to a fair number of | :08:43. | :08:48.
them Dhoni ends. It is a great chance for a change. I think we | :08:49. | :08:54.
should definitely go for it. We are able to take care of ourselves. The | :08:55. | :09:01.
future lies... I want to change it on behalf of my grandchildren. | :09:02. | :09:08.
Dundee is famous for its foodstuffs. At this baker's shop, based in union | :09:09. | :09:17.
Street... Political union has its advocates in Dundee. I feel that I | :09:18. | :09:24.
am British. I think we all have a lot to gain from staying together. | :09:25. | :09:29.
If there have been 300 years of peace between two nations, why can't | :09:30. | :09:34.
that piece continue? I would rather keep it the way it is. Before he was | :09:35. | :09:45.
Conservative Prime Minister, Winston Churchill was Dundee's Liberal MP | :09:46. | :09:51.
for 14 years. Here he is at the 1922 election am carried into the city | :09:52. | :09:55.
because of illness. His mood scarcely improved when he lost his | :09:56. | :10:03.
seat to this man, a prohibitionist. A small plaque was erected to the | :10:04. | :10:08.
great man, but not the statue. That was reserved for other heroes. | :10:09. | :10:16.
Dundee remained ambivalent. In the current contest, some are still | :10:17. | :10:26.
unsure which bound to follow. Nothing is swaying me towards either | :10:27. | :10:31.
side. I do not know enough about it yet. I need to do my own research. | :10:32. | :10:35.
It could be up to the last week or so before I make a decision. Now, | :10:36. | :10:41.
the Dundee, for Scotland, the long view is shortening. 100 days. | :10:42. | :10:47.
I'm joined now here by polling expert Professor John Curtice. | :10:48. | :10:50.
So, 100 days to go, and what's your assesment of | :10:51. | :10:53.
We have had 56 opinion polls since the referendum poll in question was | :10:54. | :11:01.
set in the three last year. Of those, only one has ever put the Yes | :11:02. | :11:05.
side ahead, a criticised commission by the SNP. The Yes side have | :11:06. | :11:11.
acknowledged they are behind. If you take the average of all the opinion | :11:12. | :11:14.
polls that were done in April and May, and take out the people who | :11:15. | :11:26.
don't -- who do not know or will not say, 57% is, no and 43% is Yes. But | :11:27. | :11:36.
Yes are in a better situation that they were before Christmas, when it | :11:37. | :11:42.
was 39%. But if Yes are going to win this referendum, they have to make | :11:43. | :11:46.
progress at a much faster rate than they have done so far. | :11:47. | :11:53.
How significant are the People who do not know at the moment? | :11:54. | :12:00.
It is often uncounted. Most opinion polls, though, are only finding | :12:01. | :12:05.
about 15% of people are saying they have no idea at all. Many of those | :12:06. | :12:13.
people, in fact, are probably not going to vote. But there is a lot of | :12:14. | :12:19.
body of people who say they have an idea of what they are going to do | :12:20. | :12:23.
but they are not quite decided yet, 15%. And then another 15% say, I | :12:24. | :12:28.
think I have made a decision but I admit I might change it. So there is | :12:29. | :12:32.
not simple it a group of people who have not decided and those who have | :12:33. | :12:38.
decided, we are all summer on a spectrum of indecision from the | :12:39. | :12:42.
absolute to no idea at all. -- we are on a spectrum of indecision. It | :12:43. | :12:48.
is the group in the middle, the people who have some idea but who | :12:49. | :12:51.
might be persuaded to change their minds, that is to the two camps have | :12:52. | :12:58.
got to appeal to. Not those who are wholly undecided, those who might | :12:59. | :12:59.
change. Is there one issue that can swing | :13:00. | :13:09.
it? Either camp has two persuaded people | :13:10. | :13:14.
that it is their side that will bring the economy improvements. | :13:15. | :13:18.
Well, there will be much more on the referendum, and where both | :13:19. | :13:22.
sides are in their campaigns, on Scotland 2014 tonight. | :13:23. | :13:24.
I will ask Alistair Darling tonight why he thinks that No Thanks is a | :13:25. | :13:40.
better phrase than Yes Scotland. And we have got a special report on | :13:41. | :13:45.
happiness. So if you need cheering up, June into Scotland 2014. | :13:46. | :13:51.
You're watching Reporting Scotland from the BBC. | :13:52. | :13:53.
Still to come on tonight's programme: | :13:54. | :13:55.
Reclaiming the city - women prepare for a midnight march in protest | :13:56. | :13:58.
Andy Moray says he does not care what other people think, he's happy | :13:59. | :14:12.
with his new coach. And the Glasgow Warriors. | :14:13. | :14:39.
An investigation has begun into allegations that babies and adults | :14:40. | :14:42.
were cremated together at Aberdeen's Hazelhead Crematorium. It comes amid | :14:43. | :14:44.
scrutiny of crematoria across Scotland and the issue of baby | :14:45. | :14:47.
ashes. Aberdeen Council chief executive Angela Scott said the | :14:48. | :14:50.
findings of an earlier independent audit would now have to be | :14:51. | :14:53.
I have advised the commission of this development. | :14:54. | :15:05.
Kevin Keane is at the crematorium for us tonight. What are parents | :15:06. | :15:08.
This is potentially the biggest development of the scandal. You may | :15:09. | :15:23.
remember that it was discovered in Edinburgh that the bee 's ashes had | :15:24. | :15:27.
been scattered in the grounds without the knowledge of the | :15:28. | :15:34.
parents. That's shown the spotlight on crematorium is around Scotland. | :15:35. | :15:37.
Aberdeen has remained the main focus because it was discovered that | :15:38. | :15:45.
parents of babies is of a certain age were not being offered any | :15:46. | :15:50.
ashes. They said that the burners on the building operator at such a high | :15:51. | :15:53.
temperature that there are no ashes left to offer the parents. There was | :15:54. | :16:00.
an independent enquiry launched which backed up that case and the | :16:01. | :16:04.
authority maintained throughout. They also said that this was being | :16:05. | :16:14.
investigated but was never in doubt, and this has been followed by a | :16:15. | :16:18.
variety of parents who are taking legal action against the City | :16:19. | :16:25.
Council. The families we represent are just broken. They are absolutely | :16:26. | :16:32.
devastated. It is the worst situation that could have come out. | :16:33. | :16:36.
There will be countless families who are impacted by this. This covers | :16:37. | :16:45.
away the area and I can only assume this is a widespread situation. This | :16:46. | :16:52.
leaves many questions unanswered. There is no statement as to what | :16:53. | :16:54.
timescale this covers. A new drug for people with Hepatitis | :16:55. | :16:58.
C will be available on the NHS. The manufacturers say it cures around | :16:59. | :17:02.
90% of cases, but at a cost of least ?36,000 per patient. A panel of | :17:03. | :17:06.
experts said that was justified by the drug's effectiveness. The | :17:07. | :17:09.
Hepatitis C Trust welcomed the decision as a ?step in the right | :17:10. | :17:12.
direction? for the complete Midnight matches taking place in the | :17:13. | :17:31.
south side of Glasgow tonight in protest at the number of sex attacks | :17:32. | :17:35.
in the city. They will demonstrate their concerns over their worries | :17:36. | :17:44.
over this situation. In the early hours of May, a woman was raped in | :17:45. | :17:50.
Tory glen. Nine years later, a young woman was raped in Govanhill. They | :17:51. | :17:57.
have released two images of the many wish to trace. Yesterday, at 130 in | :17:58. | :18:01.
the morning, another young woman raped in the city centre. Using | :18:02. | :18:05.
social media, these residents of Govanhill have organised the march | :18:06. | :18:14.
to show their disgust at this race and the claim. People are getting | :18:15. | :18:21.
scared to leave their homes. Something needs to be done. We need | :18:22. | :18:25.
to show the authorities that they need to do more on the streets of | :18:26. | :18:31.
Glasgow. We felt we needed to do something. The response has been | :18:32. | :18:40.
overwhelming, not surprisingly. See rates in the city in the past month | :18:41. | :18:46.
and the police are also looking at three other sexual assaults. Not the | :18:47. | :18:51.
sort of news the city once in the run-up to the Commonwealth Games. | :18:52. | :18:56.
What I would say is that there is no evidence that there's a link between | :18:57. | :19:02.
these investigations. We have a number of highly trained officers | :19:03. | :19:07.
dedicated to these investigations. We will dedicate that until we find | :19:08. | :19:12.
those people responsible and bring them to justice. Police have | :19:13. | :19:16.
increased patrols in the areas where these attacks have happened. But the | :19:17. | :19:19.
women said the police presence is not as visible as would like to see. | :19:20. | :19:28.
A large section of masonry has fallen from a | :19:29. | :19:29.
A large section of masonry has fallen from tenement in Woodlands | :19:30. | :19:34.
Road in Glasgow. It is understood no one was injured. The Fire Service | :19:35. | :19:40.
have checked the building. A look at other stories | :19:41. | :19:42.
from across the country... A murder inquiry is underway | :19:43. | :19:44.
after the death of a 68-year-old man He was injured when he was involved | :19:45. | :19:48.
in an altercation with another man at the Montgomerie Arms | :19:49. | :19:52.
and died later in hospital. Police say the suspect left | :19:53. | :19:55.
the pub on foot and have appealed A man who drowned in the River Nairn | :19:56. | :19:58.
at the weekend has been named locally as Alexander Fraser. Police | :19:59. | :20:03.
were called late on Saturday evening and found two men in the water, with | :20:04. | :20:06.
one trying to help the other. Police divers recovered a body on Sunday. | :20:07. | :20:10.
It is believed the 19-year-old died after going for a swim following a | :20:11. | :20:13.
beach party. It is just so unexpected. It is not | :20:14. | :20:28.
something we are used to as the community. We live round the water | :20:29. | :20:30.
all the time. It is just a tragedy. There are fresh proposals for | :20:31. | :20:34.
secondary education in Shetland. More than 600 people marched through | :20:35. | :20:37.
Lerwick on Saturday in support of rural education. The Islands Council | :20:38. | :20:40.
is now to consult on pupils staying at the Junior Highs until the end of | :20:41. | :20:43.
secondary three and on a proposal to Children from a Glasgow primary | :20:44. | :20:47.
school helped Commonwealth Games organisers announce the route the | :20:48. | :20:51.
Queen's Baton will take through the host city before the opening | :20:52. | :20:54.
ceremony. The baton will visit every community in Glasgow and several of | :20:55. | :20:57.
its landmarks. It will go all around the city and | :20:58. | :21:17.
every night, Frears stops, there will be a party. They will be a | :21:18. | :21:20.
massive party in Glasgow next month. Andy Murray's new coach Amelie | :21:21. | :21:26.
Mauresmo arrives in London tomorrow to start working with her new | :21:27. | :21:29.
charge. It's an appointment that's got the whole of tennis, and indeed | :21:30. | :21:31.
many other sports talking. Murray says he likes her calmness, and | :21:32. | :21:35.
hopes she'll provide direction and structure. Kheredine Idessane | :21:36. | :21:38.
reports from Team Murray at the Back on the green, green grass of | :21:39. | :21:59.
home. As usual team keeping a watchful eye, but the next | :22:00. | :22:06.
generation on hand courtside to 11. One adviser to practice as his new | :22:07. | :22:09.
coach does not arrive until tomorrow. The appointment of the | :22:10. | :22:14.
Frenchwoman has been the talk of the locker room. It is interesting to | :22:15. | :22:26.
see how that will work for Andy. He has chosen this person. That is the | :22:27. | :22:34.
right way. From other players point of view, I do not really care what | :22:35. | :22:39.
they think. It is time to whether it works well for me. So what do we | :22:40. | :22:48.
know about Amelie Mauresmo? She has won two major championships. She is | :22:49. | :22:52.
France's answer to Judy Murray and is now the captain of the Federation | :22:53. | :22:57.
cup team. I just want to be able to help him. That is about it. The rest | :22:58. | :23:07.
is the story for you to write, I guess. His first match in the | :23:08. | :23:17.
championship, fittingly, as against a Frenchman. | :23:18. | :23:19.
It was another impressive try from Stuart Hogg for the Scotland rugby | :23:20. | :23:22.
team against the USA and now he says he is staying at Glasgow to fight | :23:23. | :23:26.
for his place. Hogg had looked on his way out at the Warriors, but | :23:27. | :23:30.
having repaid the new Scotland coach Vern Cotter's faith in him, the | :23:31. | :23:33.
fullback is ready to show Gregor Townsend at Glasgow what he has been | :23:34. | :23:37.
Scotland's first match under the new coach may have been a redemption of | :23:38. | :23:55.
sorts for Stuart Hogg. Sent off in a humiliating defeat by Wales, he came | :23:56. | :24:00.
into this tour with something to prove. I have had the coaching staff | :24:01. | :24:07.
there to help me along the way. I will continue to work hard and | :24:08. | :24:14.
hopefully take my chances. That is all I can ask for. Are you going to | :24:15. | :24:24.
be a Glasgow player next season? Definitely. Reasons for him to smile | :24:25. | :24:32.
and same for another comeback man. There was an acknowledgement that | :24:33. | :24:37.
things can still improve. We are always looking at basics. We are | :24:38. | :24:42.
looking at a strong defence and building on that. We need to be | :24:43. | :24:49.
strong in the scrummage and aptly notes. We need to keep the idea of | :24:50. | :24:59.
keeping the ball, making chances and putting the opposition under | :25:00. | :25:03.
pressure. The team will now have another few days to get to grips | :25:04. | :25:08.
with the team before their match in Toronto against Canada. | :25:09. | :25:18.
It has been a wet old day for many of us. Is there better news to come? | :25:19. | :25:29.
Today did not quite go according to plan. It swept across the country | :25:30. | :25:34.
well ahead of schedule. Through this evening, it will | :25:35. | :25:45.
continue to sweep across the country, resting in Orkney and | :25:46. | :25:54.
Shetland. Otherwise, we could better become dry overnight with clear | :25:55. | :25:59.
spells. Mailed overnight temperatures. Tomorrow, we start | :26:00. | :26:09.
predominantly dry, although it will be cloudy. Although the rain will | :26:10. | :26:12.
hang around Shetland well into the afternoon, showers will become to | :26:13. | :26:17.
push on from the south-west during the course of the late morning. Ivy | :26:18. | :26:22.
mid-afternoon, they could be scattered, but we will all enjoy | :26:23. | :26:26.
very different weather, with the best of the sunshine in the Borders. | :26:27. | :26:35.
We could see some heavy downpours in the western part of the Central Belt | :26:36. | :26:39.
and in Aberdeenshire and the north-west Highlands. When you do | :26:40. | :26:43.
get the sunshine, we could see temperatures getting up to 21 | :26:44. | :26:49.
Celsius. Into the rest of the afternoon, the showers will continue | :26:50. | :26:52.
to push through during the course of the late afternoon and evening. In | :26:53. | :26:59.
two midweek, a high pressure builds and we start to see a more settled | :27:00. | :27:06.
picture, with a better day to come on Wednesday, mainly dry and bright | :27:07. | :27:09.
with some nice spells of sunshine. The odd shower to come, but not as | :27:10. | :27:13.
many as today and they will not be as heavy. Into Thursday, that I | :27:14. | :27:20.
starts to shuffle away and this low-pressure tries to push. It will | :27:21. | :27:27.
bring rain to north-west Highlands. I like the look of Wednesday. Just | :27:28. | :27:34.
time for the remainder of the main news. Rival campaigns and | :27:35. | :27:40.
independence debate have been marking 100 days to go until the | :27:41. | :27:46.
referendum. Both campaigns are they saying they will give a big push for | :27:47. | :27:51.
votes as polling day draws nearer. An investigation has begun into | :27:52. | :27:59.
claims that children and adults were cremated together at the crematorium | :28:00. | :28:05.
in Aberdeen. And that is reporting Scotland. We are back with the | :28:06. | :28:08.
headline is reporting Scotland. We are back with the headlines o'clock | :28:09. | :28:13.
news tonight. Enjoy the rest of your evening. | :28:14. | :28:40.
..and in a flurry of feathers, they were gone. | :28:41. | :28:44. |
