That's all from the BBC News at Six, so it's goodbye from me and on | :00:00. | :00:00.
Fears for the future of Prestwick - the BBC's news teams where you are. | :00:00. | :00:11.
Just months after the Scottish Government nationalised | :00:12. | :00:12.
the Ayrshire airport, Ryanair is set to make a major announcement | :00:13. | :00:15.
Andy Murray's dream of back-to-back Wimbledon titles comes to an end, as | :00:16. | :00:28.
We'll be live at Wimbledon with reaction to | :00:29. | :00:47.
Also on the programme, Hazel North's killer is jailed for 20 years - | :00:48. | :00:51.
Her family describe John Davis as an evil individual. | :00:52. | :00:54.
Donald Trump pledges ?100 million to transform Turnberry | :00:55. | :00:56.
If we had a Prime Minister in Scotland, who would you like it to | :00:57. | :01:08.
be? And | :01:09. | :01:09.
in 1979 we spoke to school-children We hear their grown-up views | :01:10. | :01:11.
on the independence referendum. There are growing fears over | :01:12. | :01:28.
the future of Preswick airport. There's speculation its sole | :01:29. | :01:36.
remaining scheduled airline, Ryanair, will announce it's to | :01:37. | :01:41.
begin flying from Glasgow Airport. We'll cross to our transport | :01:42. | :01:44.
correspondent David Miller. Ryanair announced that it was to | :01:45. | :01:58.
make a major announcement about a year services in Scotland tomorrow | :01:59. | :02:04.
morning at two simultaneous news conferences, one in Edinburgh and | :02:05. | :02:09.
one in Glasgow. That immediately led to speculation that Ryanair is | :02:10. | :02:13.
planning to launch services from Glasgow International Airport at the | :02:14. | :02:21.
expense of Prestwick. In fact, Ryanair is Prestwick's sole | :02:22. | :02:24.
remaining scheduled airline. Tonight, there are strong | :02:25. | :02:28.
indications that the carrier will tell us tomorrow that it plans to | :02:29. | :02:31.
run services from both airport in future. That should be some relief | :02:32. | :02:36.
for staff at Prestwick this evening, but on the streets of their | :02:37. | :02:40.
sure this evening there is real concern. I think any business going | :02:41. | :02:46.
away from the area would be bad for local businesses. I think it would | :02:47. | :02:52.
be devastating, but it is the only airline to use the report now. There | :02:53. | :02:57.
are people who work in the report who will be incredibly worried. As | :02:58. | :03:02.
we said, the Scottish Government bought the airport for ?1 a few | :03:03. | :03:06.
months ago. Has there been any reaction from the Scottish permit? | :03:07. | :03:11.
In the last few moments, I have been handed this statement from Transport | :03:12. | :03:14.
Scotland. They say they are confident there is a place for | :03:15. | :03:20.
Prestwick Airport in the evolving and increasingly competitive | :03:21. | :03:26.
Scottish aviation market. We are committed to making it the success | :03:27. | :03:31.
we know it can be. As I said, the indications tonight are that Ryanair | :03:32. | :03:34.
will begin to serve Glasgow as well as Prestwick, and that should be a | :03:35. | :03:39.
relief, but clearly the Scottish Government has to balance the books. | :03:40. | :03:44.
Its pledge to return Prestwick to profitability and to the private | :03:45. | :03:48.
sector in the years ahead, that task will undoubtedly be made more if it | :03:49. | :03:54.
does not have that sole grasp on Ryanair's business, and clearly | :03:55. | :03:59.
Glasgow airport will be delighted if it has managed to woo Ryanair if | :04:00. | :04:00.
only in part. Thank you. The dream of back to back Wimbledon | :04:01. | :04:05.
titles for Andy Murray is over. The defending champion was | :04:06. | :04:08.
comprehensively outplayed in his quarter final by the number eleven | :04:09. | :04:10.
seed, Grigor Dimitrov, who took Our reporter Kheredine Idessane | :04:11. | :04:13.
is at Wimbledon tonight. The reaction here is one of shock | :04:14. | :04:33.
and surprise. Not so much because Andy Murray lost, but rather because | :04:34. | :04:38.
of the manner of BD feat. Andy Murray will not defend his Wimbledon | :04:39. | :04:45.
title, and unusual for him, he surrendered it somewhat meekly in | :04:46. | :04:48.
just a couple of hours. Young and old, tall and small, big or all | :04:49. | :04:53.
talking about one thing. Plenty of support as usual for the defending | :04:54. | :04:58.
champion. We have come from Edinburgh to support Murray. He is | :04:59. | :05:02.
definitely in for a win today, it will be great. I think it will be | :05:03. | :05:06.
more of a challenge, but he can still do it. I want him to win | :05:07. | :05:11.
because he is really good. Sentiments are shared in Scotland, I | :05:12. | :05:16.
am sure. But could he keep up his game so far? The Duke and Duchess of | :05:17. | :05:20.
Cambridge hope so, but in the sunshine it was Grigor Dimitrov who | :05:21. | :05:32.
dazzled, beating Murray 61. It was then forced to a tie-break, which | :05:33. | :05:39.
the Bulgarian took seven dashboard. Could the defending champion hold | :05:40. | :05:43.
onto his title from two sets down? Not with a double fault at break | :05:44. | :05:49.
point. The usual fight from Andy Murray was missing today. He could | :05:50. | :05:53.
not raise his game, and fell to a straight sets defeat. I am | :05:54. | :06:01.
disappointed. He made very few mistakes. He served well and made a | :06:02. | :06:06.
lot of returns. All of the percentages were in his favour. He | :06:07. | :06:13.
played a very good match. I just wish I had played a little bit | :06:14. | :06:17.
better and being a bit tougher for him. I at the beginning he looked a | :06:18. | :06:25.
little flat. Credit to Grigor Dimitrov. He was eager, he was on | :06:26. | :06:30.
top of his game, he was in full flight in my opinion. It is | :06:31. | :06:33.
interesting the last couple of days on to see the young guys come out. | :06:34. | :06:42.
They expect to win. I am not disappointed in him. I am | :06:43. | :06:46.
disappointed in the result. I am absolutely gutted. We came | :06:47. | :06:52.
especially to see him. Very sad and shocked. It is a shame, but maybe | :06:53. | :06:58.
next year. So it is farewell from the Wimbledon champion, much earlier | :06:59. | :07:01.
than he was hoping. Yes, Andy Murray's winning streak is at an | :07:02. | :07:08.
end. It is the first time since 2008 that he has not reached the | :07:09. | :07:13.
semifinals here. He has not lost a match here since Roger Federer beat | :07:14. | :07:19.
him here in 2010. He also famously won the title last year, but he | :07:20. | :07:23.
played poorly today by his own admission. And so the all England | :07:24. | :07:27.
club will have a new champion on Saturday. Thank you. | :07:28. | :07:29.
A man has been jailed for a minimum of 20 years for | :07:30. | :07:32.
26-year-old John Davis pleaded guilty to the crime at the | :07:33. | :07:36.
Sentencing him today, the judge said Davis had committed | :07:37. | :07:40.
a motiveless crime which had caused Hazel's family indescribable pain. | :07:41. | :07:44.
Hazel North's family came to court to hear her murderer be sentenced. | :07:45. | :07:58.
Words cannot describe the feelings we have felt over these past | :07:59. | :08:02.
months, and although nothing will bring his full-back, we can take | :08:03. | :08:05.
consolation in the fact that such an evil individual has been removed | :08:06. | :08:08.
from our society. The family would like to thank everyone who has been | :08:09. | :08:14.
involved, and to have today prevented a truly brutal person from | :08:15. | :08:17.
walking the streets. We would like to thank everyone involved, who has | :08:18. | :08:22.
provided assistance and support to the family during this ordeal. We | :08:23. | :08:29.
asked people to try to remember his birthday she was, her beautiful | :08:30. | :08:34.
smile, and the tragedy that has unfortunately taken her life. | :08:35. | :08:38.
26-year-old John Davis had a history of violent crime. He had been | :08:39. | :08:42.
released from prison less than three months before he killed his all. Had | :08:43. | :08:46.
he not been released early, he would not have been free to murder his | :08:47. | :08:50.
all. The 19-year-old had gone to stay with John, her boyfriend, at | :08:51. | :08:56.
his flat in Colmar, when his family, had not heard from her, they | :08:57. | :09:03.
reported missing. Suspicion soon fell on Davis. His flat and garden | :09:04. | :09:09.
were searched. He was not to be found, but police discovered eight | :09:10. | :09:12.
speed that was covered in mud. They discovered he had run away to join | :09:13. | :09:17.
the foreign Legion. He came back and handed himself the police. He told | :09:18. | :09:21.
them where he had buried his all, in the town's Dean Park, just 300 yards | :09:22. | :09:27.
from his flat. He had wrapped in and a curtain and buried her in a | :09:28. | :09:31.
shallow grave. It is almost four months now since Hazel died here at | :09:32. | :09:36.
John Davis's flat. Sentencing him to date to a minimum of 20 years in | :09:37. | :09:40.
prison, before he can apply for parole, the judge said, this was a | :09:41. | :09:46.
wholly motiveless attack. She said he had destroyed the life of a young | :09:47. | :09:51.
woman in her prime, causing her family in describable suffering. | :09:52. | :09:53.
Tonight, his or's family know more about how she died, they just don't | :09:54. | :09:55.
know why. You're watching Reporting Scotland | :09:56. | :09:59.
from the BBC. Still to come | :10:00. | :10:00.
on tonight's programme: The Queen's Baton goes offshore to one of the | :10:01. | :10:02.
largest oil fields in Europe as it continues its journey to the Glasgow | :10:03. | :10:06.
Games. In sport, the wise and wherefores of | :10:07. | :10:14.
Andy Murray's exit from Wimbledon. Donald Trump has outlined plans | :10:15. | :10:21.
for the Turnberry golf resort this He also urges views on his ego and | :10:22. | :10:34.
the question of Scottish independence. The Trump helicopter | :10:35. | :10:40.
was getting a bit of a polished today. There is ?109 worth of | :10:41. | :10:46.
polished about to be spent by Donald Trump on this, his latest golf | :10:47. | :10:51.
resort. A sizeable investment in Scotland in the run-up to the | :10:52. | :10:56.
independence referendum. By doing that, it seems you are fairly | :10:57. | :11:01.
relaxed about the outcome of the referendum? It could be a bad thing, | :11:02. | :11:07.
but maybe it wouldn't. I don't know. It is very questionable. A lot of | :11:08. | :11:09.
people are very concerned about it, but that will not have any impact on | :11:10. | :11:20.
me going forward. I believe this is very negative for the economy and | :11:21. | :11:23.
for tourism, but it will not have any impact on what I do. The golf | :11:24. | :11:28.
course and will tell would now be known as Trump Turnberry. Not for a | :11:29. | :11:34.
vanity but for business reasons. The organisers of the open are clear on | :11:35. | :11:40.
the cause's official title. He was quoted in the paper saying he thinks | :11:41. | :11:44.
it is great, but that does not mean the trophy will seek Trump | :11:45. | :11:47.
Turnberry. He says it is not going to say that. But he begs the name of | :11:48. | :11:53.
the resort is great. The trophy will still be called Turnberry. His plans | :11:54. | :11:58.
to win back the open mean there will be some tweaking to the cause to | :11:59. | :12:05.
make it even more dramatic. We have got an opportunity to extend the | :12:06. | :12:09.
10th hole, and crucially growing further on, and that is really | :12:10. | :12:13.
assisted by producing a completely new 11th hole, and it will play | :12:14. | :12:19.
across a very dramatic B. Donald Trump says bringing the open back | :12:20. | :12:23.
here is very important to him personally, and it was one of the | :12:24. | :12:26.
considerations he brought into play when making this deal. But it is | :12:27. | :12:30.
unlikely that that will happen onto the 20 20s. | :12:31. | :12:39.
Well Donald Trump's plans feature in tonight's Scotland 2014. | :12:40. | :12:41.
Here's Sarah Smith with details of what's in the programme. | :12:42. | :12:46.
I have been speaking to Donald Trump about his fight with Alex Salmond | :12:47. | :12:51.
and his views on Scottish independence. We also have a special | :12:52. | :12:56.
investigation because we found out that several Scottish abattoirs are | :12:57. | :12:58.
failing to comply with basic animal welfare. That is on BBC Two tonight. | :12:59. | :13:05.
Well let's hear more on that special investigation | :13:06. | :13:07.
into some Scottish abattoirs and their treatment of animals. | :13:08. | :13:09.
A BBC investigation has discovered heavily pregnant cattle | :13:10. | :13:11.
being sent for slaughter, animals with broken limbs and slaughtermen | :13:12. | :13:13.
Our investigations correspondent Samantha Poling | :13:14. | :13:15.
In the last 20 years, the number of abattoirs in Scotland has halved. | :13:16. | :13:31.
Only 31 remain. Farmers like Ben are now having to send their animals are | :13:32. | :13:35.
hundreds of miles or the nearest slaughter. It is the lucky few who | :13:36. | :13:41.
are killed within 100 miles. I am doing my best to try and give these | :13:42. | :13:46.
picks the best life I can, because I care for them, but all of my good | :13:47. | :13:53.
work can be scuppered by the last 24 hours alive. It's those last hours | :13:54. | :13:59.
which are of most concern. Several of Scotland's slaughter houses | :14:00. | :14:03.
failed to fully comply with the regulations. They were marked week | :14:04. | :14:07.
in areas such as building structure and capacity. The humane handling of | :14:08. | :14:13.
animals, adequate maintenance of stunning equipment, effective | :14:14. | :14:17.
electric stunning settings, correct strength, correct licences. The bet | :14:18. | :14:21.
the board for an all switch arrived at slaughter houses don't | :14:22. | :14:25.
differentiate between locations across the UK, but highlight a | :14:26. | :14:29.
catalogue of animal welfare concerns, including heavily pregnant | :14:30. | :14:35.
animals sent first lot, stunning not effective, but handling, and broken | :14:36. | :14:40.
limbs. This man worked in the animal slaughter industry in Scotland for | :14:41. | :14:45.
ten years. The pigs were not being killed the right way, because | :14:46. | :14:48.
sometimes it was not the right voltage at all. You could see their | :14:49. | :14:57.
unborn calves, and the lambs as well. We took our evidence to a vet. | :14:58. | :15:03.
I think there are some things within these reports which are absolutely | :15:04. | :15:07.
unforgivable. Animals with a broken leg. Animals in the late stages of | :15:08. | :15:13.
pregnancy. Why would anyone send an animal that was heavily pregnant, | :15:14. | :15:20.
when the value of that animal is in the animals that it produces. The | :15:21. | :15:26.
slaughter houses of Scotland told as rigorous measures are in place, and | :15:27. | :15:30.
they would immediately investigate any allegations suggesting poor | :15:31. | :15:30.
welfare. A look at other stories | :15:31. | :15:35.
from the across the country: The policy | :15:36. | :15:37.
of routinely allowing specialist police officers to carry handguns is | :15:38. | :15:39.

Meanwhile the Queen's Baton relay went offshore today. | :17:46. | :17:47.
It was flown to the Clair platform in one | :17:48. | :17:49.
Our baton correspondent Cameron Buttle joined it. | :17:50. | :17:56.
Of all the places the pattern has been, you would expect it to stop | :17:57. | :18:04.
here. You could not have brought the Olympic torch here, but you can ring | :18:05. | :18:10.
the Queen's Baton relay. The Queen's Baton relay soon drew staff from all | :18:11. | :18:14.
parts of the platform, one of 300 in the North Sea. These are just some | :18:15. | :18:19.
of the 30,000 offshore workers employed in the industry. We may be | :18:20. | :18:23.
50 miles out into the North Sea, but there are 100 people on this | :18:24. | :18:27.
platform, it is a community in itself, and there is a real sense | :18:28. | :18:30.
that they should also share in the experience. The crew are all very | :18:31. | :18:35.
excited. I saw it myself last night in Shetland, and to bring it out | :18:36. | :18:42.
here in the North Sea, which is thousands of people all the time, | :18:43. | :18:46.
that is really great. And the man in charge is here. You are in charge of | :18:47. | :18:51.
everybody here, about 100 people, what does it mean to have it here? | :18:52. | :18:56.
It is great. We don't often get involved in things like this, so it | :18:57. | :19:00.
is great to see. And he very much for doing that. Not many people have | :19:01. | :19:07.
an understanding of what the offshore like is like at all, until | :19:08. | :19:12.
you come and expands it for yourself, you can't understand it. | :19:13. | :19:16.
You have a very mixed community offshore, not just on the UK, but | :19:17. | :19:21.
also from other countries. I think everybody has embraced the visit. | :19:22. | :19:27.
This is a 24/7 industry. Work offshore never stops. Today was one | :19:28. | :19:31.
of the rare occasions when they got a break. | :19:32. | :19:38.
More sport now and more Wimbledon. | :19:39. | :19:42.
If you insist... Because it's not great news, is it? As you may have | :19:43. | :19:43.
seen earlier in the programme, Andy Murray the defending champion is out | :19:44. | :19:46.
of the men's singles at Wimbledon. Beaten in straight sets by the | :19:47. | :19:49.
eleventh seed Grigor Dimitrov of Bulgaria. | :19:50. | :19:51.
Our tennis reporter Kheredine Idessane joins us now from the All | :19:52. | :19:55.
England club. Evening Kheredine. A disappointing result but is it a | :19:56. | :19:58.
It was indeed. Certainly a surprise to me. I didn't think Andy Murray | :19:59. | :20:10.
would go out at this stage, certainly not in straight sets, | :20:11. | :20:14.
certainly not so meekly, really after just two hours of play. Of | :20:15. | :20:20.
course, Grigor Dimitrov is a top player, but Andy Murray would | :20:21. | :20:22.
normally bring a lot more to the table. He just had a really bad day | :20:23. | :20:27.
at the office to take, and by his own admission played early and made | :20:28. | :20:31.
too many mistakes. He brushes off any suggestion that there was | :20:32. | :20:34.
something wrong with him today. I felt fine. Obviously, I got off to a | :20:35. | :20:44.
bad start, so that was the disappointing part of the match. | :20:45. | :20:49.
I've found a way to get myself back into it at the end of the second | :20:50. | :20:53.
set, but the start was not good enough, you need to start better. I | :20:54. | :20:59.
am sure many people might be asking what's next for Andy Murray, well | :21:00. | :21:02.
year is going to take a few days off to recover, and he is already saying | :21:03. | :21:07.
he has a lot of things he wants to work on. He will be back in practice | :21:08. | :21:11.
within the next few days. He was asked about Amelie Mauresmo, which | :21:12. | :21:15.
he continue with her as his coach? He says he would like to, but they | :21:16. | :21:32.
will discuss together. We will come back to that later. I can tell you | :21:33. | :21:37.
what is happening in Scottish cricket. Scotland's cricketers have | :21:38. | :21:41.
won the rain interrupted second match against the Netherlands. They | :21:42. | :21:50.
were set a target of 260 runs, and the Netherlands only scored 115. It | :21:51. | :21:58.
is now one all in the series. Now it is a look at what else is happening | :21:59. | :22:00.
in Scottish sport. Ryan Gauld has completed | :22:01. | :22:03.
a ?3 million move to Sporting Lisbon from Dundee United, | :22:04. | :22:05.
signing a six year contract. It includes | :22:06. | :22:07.
a ?48 million release clause. Midfielder Kenny McLean's signed | :22:08. | :22:11.
a two year contract extension with The Buddies have also signed | :22:12. | :22:13.
Manchester City defender Ellis British and Irish Lion Stuart Hogg's | :22:14. | :22:17.
been drafted into the Scotland He replaces Tommy Seymour who has | :22:18. | :22:24.
a neck injury. Jamie Murray and Casey Dellacqua are | :22:25. | :22:29.
through to the third round of Wimbledon's mixed doubles | :22:30. | :22:33.
after a straight sets win over Jesse Happy. And fortunately we did not | :22:34. | :22:50.
close it out last night in the last light of the day, but we came back | :22:51. | :22:52.
and we managed to win. And you can read more about | :22:53. | :22:54.
Andy Murray's wimbledon woe and more It's time to put on your flares | :22:55. | :22:57.
on and think back to 1979. A time when it was 18 pence | :22:58. | :23:13.
for a pint of beer, the most popular car was a Ford Cortina, oh | :23:14. | :23:17.
and there was a referendum to decide During the BBC coverage a number of | :23:18. | :23:20.
eight-year-olds from Mount Florida Our Referendum correspondent | :23:21. | :23:26.
Laura Bicker looks to the past As the Bee Gees hit the high notes | :23:27. | :23:41.
on their way to number one, his political drama was unfolding in | :23:42. | :23:50.
Scotland. But amongst the archives was this little gem. What would you | :23:51. | :23:58.
like to see in Scotland? Lots of more sweet shops. What do you know | :23:59. | :24:07.
about abolition? Nothing really. They want to do things by | :24:08. | :24:11.
themselves. We have been with the England -- English too long. We want | :24:12. | :24:24.
to be with ourselves. Linda Boyle is one of the people interviewed who | :24:25. | :24:29.
still lives in Glasgow. Very feeling now? As soon as you walked in the | :24:30. | :24:40.
door, you could smell the girls toilets. Everyone is far more aware | :24:41. | :24:44.
of what is going on now. You have got the media now. Back then, there | :24:45. | :24:51.
was only three channels on the TV. There is more of an arena now. We | :24:52. | :24:55.
couldn't leave without asking what these eight-year-olds think this | :24:56. | :25:00.
year. What do you know about the independence referendum? That | :25:01. | :25:06.
Scotland wants to be separate from England so that England doesn't get | :25:07. | :25:09.
to tell them what to do. Who would you like to be leader of Scotland? | :25:10. | :25:17.
My dad. What do you think you would do a few were leader of Scotland? | :25:18. | :25:29.
More chocolate Fountains. I would let Scotland have a free entry to | :25:30. | :25:34.
the World Cup every single time. Well you can't argue with that. Now | :25:35. | :25:39.
for the weather. We have had a band of rain tracking | :25:40. | :25:53.
south and eastwards across the country, of the sky has cleared | :25:54. | :25:59.
across part of the country. Quite a damp field to things, and it will | :26:00. | :26:04.
clear overnight, then it will be dry with clear spells, still breezy in | :26:05. | :26:08.
the north, still a few showers for Shetland, but it will be drier and | :26:09. | :26:13.
more fresh than yesterday. Temperatures in single figures for | :26:14. | :26:16.
oral spots. Into tomorrow, and we will be predominantly dry, with a | :26:17. | :26:21.
good deal of cloud around. Patchy rain in the northern isles. Not a | :26:22. | :26:28.
lot in the way of brightness, but the best of it will be towards | :26:29. | :26:31.
eastern parts, and if we take a closer look around 3pm, that is | :26:32. | :26:36.
certainly the case. Decent sunshine for the Borders and the Lothians. | :26:37. | :26:41.
Across the West, more in the way of cloud, but it will be predominantly | :26:42. | :26:46.
dry. Just some drizzly rain, and brisk winds in that part of the | :26:47. | :26:50.
country. For Shetland, we will still see some rain and some winds. 19 | :26:51. | :26:58.
Celsius, and the best of the sunshine will be towards Inverness, | :26:59. | :27:02.
where the Queen's Baton relay will be tomorrow. Maybe a little bit of | :27:03. | :27:09.
sunshine at times. Through towards tomorrow evening, that rain will | :27:10. | :27:12.
gather pace towards the rest. It will also try to make inroads across | :27:13. | :27:17.
the rest of the country. It is linked to this weather front, so | :27:18. | :27:20.
there will be some heavy rain for the Western Isles. Into Escher and | :27:21. | :27:25.
Greece and Galloway. Eastern Scotland, getting away with a lot of | :27:26. | :27:29.
dry weather. Not a lot of rain, but it will be windy, and not a lot in | :27:30. | :27:35.
the way of brightness. Certainly on the cool site. Into the weekend, | :27:36. | :27:39.
that weather front careers but low pressures days nearby, and it shall | :27:40. | :27:43.
relate to things. The best of the brightness in the east. That is the | :27:44. | :27:45.
podcast. Never a remainder of the main news. | :27:46. | :27:54.
Ryanair will announce that it will be running services from Glasgow | :27:55. | :28:00.
airport, leading to fears for its future at Prestwick. That is all | :28:01. | :28:04.
from us. Enjoy the rest of your week. | :28:05. | :28:07. |
