A reminder of the main story, Rolf Harris is beginning a

:00:00.:00:00.

Tonight, on Reporting Scotland. The Queen formally names the largest

:00:07.:00:16.

warship ever built in the UK and assembled at Rosyth.

:00:17.:00:21.

Also on the programme tonight. The Motherwell tower block evacuated

:00:22.:00:26.

after an asbestos alert. Residents will have to stay away from their

:00:27.:00:30.

homes until Monday. The Scottish Formula 1 driver

:00:31.:00:36.

who's made history by becoming the first woman in two decades to drive

:00:37.:00:40.

in a Grand Prix weekend. Hundreds turn out to see the

:00:41.:00:45.

Commonwealth Games baton as it passes through the Highlands and

:00:46.:00:50.

Perthshire. And shaken but not stirred - Fort

:00:51.:00:52.

William is struck by the strongest earthquake for years.

:00:53.:01:10.

The Queen has given her name to the largest warship ever built

:01:11.:01:14.

HMS Queen Elizabeth took seven years to build and cost over ?6 billion -

:01:15.:01:20.

The great and the good were joined at Rosyth dockyard by 3500 people

:01:21.:01:27.

who have been involved in the design and construction of the

:01:28.:01:30.

Our political correspondent Glenn Campbell joined them.

:01:31.:01:43.

In all, and with the new. It is the largest British warship ever built,

:01:44.:01:51.

dwarfing the ageing carrier HMS illustrious dogs alongside. --

:01:52.:01:55.

docked alongside. The Queen came to formally lend

:01:56.:01:59.

the carrier her name. But first, a Royal Air Force salute

:02:00.:02:01.

for the pride of the Royal Navy. It will be a national instrument of

:02:02.:02:20.

power. That means she will be a national symbol of authority, and

:02:21.:02:25.

that means she will be a national icon too. All the while, helping to

:02:26.:02:32.

keep the great in Great Britain and the Royal in the Royal Navy.

:02:33.:02:35.

Watched by shipyard workers and their families,

:02:36.:02:38.

Naval officers and crew, the Queen performed her formal task.

:02:39.:02:50.

I name this ship the Queen Elizabeth. May God bless this ship

:02:51.:02:56.

and all who sail in her. Malt whisky from Bowmore

:02:57.:02:59.

distillery was used rather than champagne adding a Scottish flavour

:03:00.:03:01.

to this very British celebration. The Royal Navy has chosen

:03:02.:03:08.

American Independence Day to name Yet this ceremony marks the UK's

:03:09.:03:15.

intention to continue to independently project power around

:03:16.:03:20.

the world for decades to come. It is a long-term investment in

:03:21.:03:34.

Scotland's security. This will help to keep us safe, and that is a vital

:03:35.:03:36.

investment. But if Scotland votes

:03:37.:03:39.

for independence the current Scottish government

:03:40.:03:40.

would make no claim on the aircraft I think we will concentrate on the

:03:41.:03:53.

North Atlantic and fulfilling that gap in the defences at the moment,

:03:54.:03:58.

which will be one of the prime responsibilities of an independent

:03:59.:04:00.

Scotland as part of the NATO alliance.

:04:01.:04:02.

Many of the leading lights in the "no" campaign turned out today.

:04:03.:04:05.

As did Mr Salmond and his father - a 92-year-old Royal Navy war

:04:06.:04:08.

veteran who he says is definitely voting "yes".

:04:09.:04:10.

The big choice that Scotland faces has loomed large at the naming

:04:11.:04:12.

And we'll have more from Glenn in a moment - But first

:04:13.:04:24.

our economics correspondent Colletta Smith joins me now.

:04:25.:04:26.

Colletta, this is certainly a ship with some

:04:27.:04:28.

At 65,000 tonnes it is Britain's biggest ever aircraft carrier.

:04:29.:04:35.

Looking at the dimensions it's 920 ft

:04:36.:04:38.

in length, which is more than twice the size of the hydro in Glasgow.

:04:39.:04:43.

It has 12 decks with thousands of cabins inside.

:04:44.:04:47.

On the top there's four and a half acres of space on the flight deck,

:04:48.:04:50.

and that's room for 40 joint strike fighter jets to land and take-off.

:04:51.:04:55.

The Queen Elizabeth ship has been a lifeline to

:04:56.:04:57.

the Scottish staff and companies involved in the construction.

:04:58.:05:03.

From the first cut of metal to the final touches, this aircraft carrier

:05:04.:05:08.

has been responsible for halting the decline in Scotland's ship building.

:05:09.:05:19.

May God speed to her and all who sail in her.

:05:20.:05:24.

The Govan yard was, in it's heyday, the busiest shipyard in the world.

:05:25.:05:27.

Even now BAE's shipbuilding business still keeps 3000 people

:05:28.:05:29.

The contracts to build these two giant aircraft carriers that have

:05:30.:05:33.

Everyone should be proud of what we've managed to do here,

:05:34.:05:40.

this is an engineering and construction programme

:05:41.:05:46.

of a massive scale, probably one of the biggest that we've done in

:05:47.:05:49.

the country, and it involves this ship and the second ship as well.

:05:50.:05:52.

The fact that two ships were commissioned over a longer time

:05:53.:05:55.

period has been the perfect opportunity to develop the skills

:05:56.:05:57.

of the future, with 400 apprentices involved in construction.

:05:58.:06:03.

I'm really looking forward to the new ship getting built because

:06:04.:06:06.

I'll be more involved, get to see it from the ground up, getting built

:06:07.:06:09.

to obviously getting named and sent off again, it'll be very exciting

:06:10.:06:12.

I've been really fortunate to have 3 placements within the QEC.

:06:13.:06:18.

I've worked with the assembly team for queen elizabeth, I've worked

:06:19.:06:21.

in the engineering team for queen elizabeth, and I now currently work

:06:22.:06:24.

with the manufacturing team for Prince of Wales, which is really

:06:25.:06:26.

exciting to see it from a completely different angle.

:06:27.:06:28.

But while the mood is bouyant today and staff here in Govan are shifting

:06:29.:06:32.

their focus to the second of the two giant ships, the prospects further

:06:33.:06:37.

Despite today's celebrations, those working in the industry now that the

:06:38.:06:55.

future is far from certain. Well, before we came

:06:56.:06:58.

on air I spoke to our political correspondent Glenn Campbell and I

:06:59.:07:00.

asked him how much the future of shipbuilding on the Clyde might

:07:01.:07:03.

depend on how Scotland votes These carriers are supposed to last

:07:04.:07:12.

so long that it will be a very long time, if ever, before another

:07:13.:07:17.

aircraft carrier is built in the UK, regardless of what happens in

:07:18.:07:22.

the referendum, but those who want Scotland to stay inside the union

:07:23.:07:26.

think that you are disliked this will depend on that for future

:07:27.:07:32.

orders. The Scottish Government says there is no reason why the Clyde

:07:33.:07:37.

could not prosper with orders from both the UK and the Scottish

:07:38.:07:42.

ministries of defence in the event of independence. This is the sort of

:07:43.:07:45.

battle that will continue right up to the referendum. Who is winning?

:07:46.:07:52.

It is hard to say. A reminder that no politician, no political idea is

:07:53.:07:54.

universally popular. 120 tenants evacuated

:07:55.:07:57.

from a Motherwell tower block will not be allowed back

:07:58.:08:00.

into their flats until Monday. They were moved from

:08:01.:08:02.

their homes yesterday, after workers North Lanarkshire Council has

:08:03.:08:04.

arranged accommodation It was during work yesterday that

:08:05.:08:19.

was being undertaken by ScottishPower contract is on the

:08:20.:08:23.

mains cable at the flats that a wall was disturbed that is lined with

:08:24.:08:28.

asbestos. Monitoring and test took place and it was decided that the

:08:29.:08:32.

best thing to do was to evacuate all the residents, more than 100 who

:08:33.:08:37.

stayed in the flats. Some have gone to stay with relatives, others have

:08:38.:08:43.

been put up in hotels. This tenet came back this morning to see if

:08:44.:08:47.

there was any news of getting back on. It doesn't matter where you are

:08:48.:08:52.

staying. You still want to go home as soon as possible. I know the

:08:53.:08:57.

people I am in the hotel with will want to get home. The council has

:08:58.:09:01.

decided these people will not be getting back into night or this

:09:02.:09:06.

weekend. We have decided that the residents cannot go back in until

:09:07.:09:11.

Monday. We need to carry out a full clean-up operation on the tower and

:09:12.:09:15.

to the common areas within the tower. Our primary concern is the

:09:16.:09:20.

welfare of our tenants. The delay will come as a disappointment to

:09:21.:09:24.

residents, many of whom are elderly and left with very little loathing

:09:25.:09:28.

and personal belongings. There will be an investigation into how the

:09:29.:09:34.

work disturbed it as here. -- disturbed asbestos here.

:09:35.:09:37.

Two men were taken to hospital this evening in Edinburgh following

:09:38.:09:40.

an armed struggle in the city centre Princes Street was brought to

:09:41.:09:42.

a standstill after police tasered a man who'd been wielding a knife.

:09:43.:09:45.

He was taken to hospital where he's being held in police custody.

:09:46.:09:48.

One officer was also treated for a shoulder injury sustained

:09:49.:09:51.

Thousands of people are heading to Ingliston on the outskirts

:09:52.:09:56.

of Edinburgh this evening for a concert by a DJ from Holland.

:09:57.:09:59.

The event was to have taken place earlier this year but was

:10:00.:10:02.

rescheduled after a gig in Belfast by the same DJ saw a hundred

:10:03.:10:07.

youngsters treated by paramedics for the effects of alcohol and drugs.

:10:08.:10:09.

Catriona Renton has been following the story.

:10:10.:10:18.

These fans haven't let the weather put them off as they arrived at

:10:19.:10:23.

Ingliston earlier this evening. This was what happened when this DJ came

:10:24.:10:30.

to Belfast. The Ambulance Service described the scene as a major

:10:31.:10:35.

incident. More than 100 people had to be treated or drinking too much

:10:36.:10:39.

alcohol and in some cases were taking drugs. He had been meant to

:10:40.:10:45.

perform just two days later, but the council and police cancelled it due

:10:46.:10:52.

to safety concerns. There is a significant police presence here

:10:53.:10:55.

tonight. We will have a number of police officers within the venue

:10:56.:11:00.

itself, along with a number of plain clothes officers out there. There

:11:01.:11:05.

are also drug dogs who will be going up and down the lines around the

:11:06.:11:08.

venue, so if you have anything you should not have, you will be cot.

:11:09.:11:16.

The DJ is a Dutch producer and positions. He is known for his live

:11:17.:11:21.

set at music festivals. The doors are just opening just now. These are

:11:22.:11:27.

the early, as. Around 11,000 people are expected here this evening. The

:11:28.:11:33.

music will go on until 4am this morning. These fans have been

:11:34.:11:39.

thinking about safety. We are not going to be alone. It was cancelled

:11:40.:11:43.

last time. It should be better this time I to Mac police say that if

:11:44.:11:47.

people follow their advice it will be an enjoyable event.

:11:48.:11:50.

Now time for a look at some other stories from across the country.

:11:51.:11:53.

A man has died after falling more than 600 feet

:11:54.:11:56.

The accident happened this lunchtime in Glen Einich near Rothiemurchus.

:11:57.:11:59.

Cairngorm Mountain rescue and an RAF helicopter took the dead man

:12:00.:12:02.

The population of Kirkwall looks set to almost

:12:03.:12:07.

double this weekend with a massive invasion of cruise passengers.

:12:08.:12:12.

Three liners are set to arrive there tomorrow.

:12:13.:12:16.

Between them, they're due to bring 7000 visitors to the town.

:12:17.:12:20.

It's the largest number of cruise passengers that has ever descended

:12:21.:12:23.

The Forestry Commission's set out a plan to manage deer in Scotland's

:12:24.:12:28.

The Commission, which culls 30,000 of the animals every year,

:12:29.:12:34.

said excessive deer numbers can damage the landscape, but it wants

:12:35.:12:39.

to help deer make a positive contribution to the environment.

:12:40.:12:43.

And the former Olympic champion Alan Wells has received an honorary

:12:44.:12:45.

34 years after he won gold in the 100 metres, he was handed the honour

:12:46.:12:52.

alongside his wife Margot who coached him at the Moscow Games.

:12:53.:12:56.

Both were recognised for services to sport.

:12:57.:13:00.

In less than three weeks, the Commonwealth Games will be upon

:13:01.:13:03.

us and more than 6000 competitors and officials will have taken up

:13:04.:13:10.

residence in the Athletes' Village in Glasgow.

:13:11.:13:12.

Big names like Usain Bolt, Mo Farah and Tom Daley will be here,

:13:13.:13:15.

alongside first time competitors from all over the world.

:13:16.:13:17.

Our Commonwealth Games reporter, Lisa Summers, is getting the chance

:13:18.:13:20.

These houses here are going to be used by athletes from all different

:13:21.:13:33.

countries during the games. They are the most accessible and after the

:13:34.:13:36.

games are over, they will be turned into a care home. Tonight, people

:13:37.:13:40.

are staying in the village testing the facilities. With me is the man

:13:41.:13:47.

in charge of putting on the commonwealth games. It really does

:13:48.:13:51.

feel at that things are about to kick off? It is such an exciting

:13:52.:13:56.

time for us. One week to go until we start to open our doors for the

:13:57.:14:02.

athletes. This will be their home from home. We are absolutely

:14:03.:14:07.

excited, and tonight is about making that everything is good for them

:14:08.:14:15.

when they come. There will be over 6000 athletes and officials here.

:14:16.:14:19.

What sort of things do you have to put in place? We need to make sure

:14:20.:14:23.

the village is comfortable and that people can relax. At the same time,

:14:24.:14:27.

we want the athletes to be able to get to know each other better and

:14:28.:14:32.

celebrate their success. Thank you very much. There will also be

:14:33.:14:36.

medical facilities and a gym. An enormous canteen with 2000 dishes on

:14:37.:14:41.

the menu. All we need now are the athletes.

:14:42.:14:44.

And staying with the Commowealth Games,

:14:45.:14:45.

the Queen's baton has headed down from the Highlands into Perthshire.

:14:46.:14:48.

These were the scenes as hundreds of people turned out on the streets

:14:49.:14:51.

Earlier in the day, our reporter, Cameron Buttle, caught up with

:14:52.:14:54.

the relay as it passed through the centre of Aviemore.

:14:55.:15:01.

There you go, the Queen's Baton is working its way through Aviemore

:15:02.:15:10.

this morning. As you can see, a fantastic turnout here this morning.

:15:11.:15:14.

They love their outdoor life here. A great reception as the Queen's Baton

:15:15.:15:20.

works his way down the Main Street here. What did you think of the

:15:21.:15:24.

Queen's Baton coming through, then? I think it is a great thing for the

:15:25.:15:28.

community, it brings everyone together. And you are involved with

:15:29.:15:37.

active Scotland, what is that about? It is all about helping the

:15:38.:15:41.

community and kids, and giving people easier access to sports. What

:15:42.:15:49.

did you think of that? I was up late last night thinking about it, it is

:15:50.:15:54.

an amazing feeling to reality with so many people and who have so much

:15:55.:15:59.

support. It is great for the community. We are at about the

:16:00.:16:04.

halfway stage now, and we are still waiting for the Queen's Baton to get

:16:05.:16:05.

to Glasgow for the opening ceremony. Well he's had to be prised away

:16:06.:16:08.

from the World Cup to do some work But he's here now with

:16:09.:16:12.

all tonight's sport. Scots driver Susie Wolff is

:16:13.:16:14.

the first woman in more than twenty years to take

:16:15.:16:18.

part in a Formula One racing event. She was part of the Williams

:16:19.:16:21.

practice team at the British Grand didn't all go to plan though

:16:22.:16:26.

as Alasdair Lamont reports. It was a practice day like any other

:16:27.:16:38.

at Silverstone. All of the British favourites were in attendance, as

:16:39.:16:44.

well as a new kid on the block. There was plenty of support for the

:16:45.:16:48.

31-year-old from open as she completed the first lap of the

:16:49.:16:54.

famous circuit. Going out onto the track was the best feeling, because

:16:55.:16:58.

hello there has been a lot of media around it, when you are in the car,

:16:59.:17:04.

it is the best. It is just you and the car. As soon as I left,

:17:05.:17:07.

everything felt good and I had a good feeling out there. And day got

:17:08.:17:18.

even better. For the six women in history to take part in a race

:17:19.:17:23.

weekend, that was as good as it got. A problem with oil pressure soon

:17:24.:17:26.

brought her day to an end. She looked on the bright side. It was

:17:27.:17:31.

good to get that first run on an actual base that Mac -- actual race

:17:32.:17:40.

in the bag. It was good to know exactly how it will feel. She hopes

:17:41.:17:47.

this will be another step towards her dream role as a teen driver.

:17:48.:17:50.

Now, a look at what else is happening across Scottish sport.

:17:51.:17:59.

In man has died while climbing in the Cairngorms. Some fans have been

:18:00.:18:20.

quick to criticise it. The manager wants them to be patient when

:18:21.:18:24.

judging him. It would be very easy to bring in ten or 15 players, but

:18:25.:18:29.

they would not necessarily be the right ones who I could take them to

:18:30.:18:37.

where I wanted them to go. If it means waiting a few extra days, I am

:18:38.:18:42.

prepared to do that. Aberdeen's manager says he is delighted with

:18:43.:18:46.

their first win in the Europa League qualifier. They took a five

:18:47.:18:50.

millilitres to Latvia for the second leg. Lindsay Sharp has become the

:18:51.:18:56.

second woman ever to run 800 metres in under two minutes. She did it in

:18:57.:19:01.

a race in Switzerland that was won by a Kenyan woman. Stephen Gallacher

:19:02.:19:08.

has dropped down the leaderboard at the French Open. Six under par

:19:09.:19:12.

yesterday. He is now three under. Read all about our sports news on

:19:13.:19:27.

the BBC website. If you are watching from the Fort William area, are you

:19:28.:19:32.

aware there was an earthquake yesterday evening? To date, the

:19:33.:19:37.

British geological survey says that it had a magnitude of three. Some

:19:38.:19:42.

residents reported hearing a large bang, while another said it had

:19:43.:19:48.

caused her teacups to rattle. Seismic impact of the great Glen

:19:49.:19:54.

fault made itself felt last night. The epicentre of the quake was near

:19:55.:20:00.

Fort William. The tremors were felt as far apart as open and Sabine

:20:01.:20:06.

Bridge. It was little more than a neat trembler, but talking to people

:20:07.:20:11.

in Fort William, it seemed the earth had moved for most of them. It

:20:12.:20:15.

sounded a bit like a thunderstorm, but I knew it wasn't. I didn't

:20:16.:20:23.

really know what to make of it. It felt like a train was coming

:20:24.:20:27.

through. That was my initial reaction. I think I gave some of the

:20:28.:20:31.

people in the library a bit more of a skier with my shouting rather than

:20:32.:20:37.

the actual earthquake. We are going to Turkey next week, is it is the

:20:38.:20:40.

kind of thing you would expect there. You are looking at the

:20:41.:20:44.

biggest earthquakes in the world, that would be a nine, so a magnitude

:20:45.:20:51.

of three would be strongly felt, but it wouldn't do any damage. There are

:20:52.:20:57.

around 300 earthquakes in the UK each year. The one must night was

:20:58.:21:03.

certainly more unexpected than the traditional summer rain and make

:21:04.:21:09.

cheese. -- and flies. It let people slightly shaken but only a little

:21:10.:21:19.

stirred. Meanwhile, a mini tornado has been spotted in Glasgow. A

:21:20.:21:23.

viewer spotted it whipping up dust and rubbish on Bedford Street. He's

:21:24.:21:29.

dust devils are caused by a rising column of hot air that begins to

:21:30.:21:33.

rise as it stretches, throwing up degree. They are pretty unusual

:21:34.:21:43.

here. We don't get too many of them in Scotland. Now for the weather.

:21:44.:21:50.

There will be some sunshine and also some showers. We have had a band of

:21:51.:22:00.

rain tracking east, but note the skies are brightening across the

:22:01.:22:04.

East. Cloudy conditions for eastern Scotland and some patchy rain, which

:22:05.:22:08.

will clear, although we will see rain returned to the Borders in the

:22:09.:22:13.

early hours. Otherwise, it will be dry overnight, with some clear

:22:14.:22:17.

spells and some light winds. It will be colder than last night, with

:22:18.:22:23.

temperatures of as low as four or five in Aberdeenshire and Angus.

Away from the east coast, there will be some thicker cloud first thing

and some patchy rain, which will then clear. Then it is a process of

:22:34.:22:37.

the cloud building up as the day goes on, and still some decent sunny

:22:38.:22:42.

spells to be had. Not everywhere will catch those showers. When you

:22:43.:22:46.

do get them, they will be heavy. But also some lovely sunshine from --

:22:47.:22:53.

for Dumfries and Galloway, Angus and pressure. Some heavy showers in the

Highlands. -- temperatures for most of us 16 Celsius to 18 Celsius. For

Shetland, rain will return later in the afternoon. A few are heading to

the hills tomorrow, always the risk of a shower, especially across the

:23:13.:23:18.

more northern areas. Generally, temperatures of four Celsius to

eight Celsius. Winds from the west or south-west at ten to 20 mph. For

:23:23.:23:27.

the rest of the afternoon and evening to moral, still that mix of

:23:28.:23:34.

clear spells and showers. On Sunday, relatively dry, although low

:23:35.:23:38.

pressure will still be near. If anything, those showers will develop

:23:39.:23:43.

a bit more widely on Sunday and will be heavier. Still some decent spells

:23:44.:23:46.

of sunshine in between, although there could also be some hail and

:23:47.:23:53.

some blunder. That is your forecast. -- some thunder. That is all for

:23:54.:24:00.

now. I will be back at 10pm. Have a very good weekend.
