Police reveal that an 85-year-old Edinburgh woman | :00:00. | :00:00.
attacked in her home was stabbed and possibly sexually assaulted. | :00:00. | :00:14.
The quickie degree, a trial to speed up university courses | :00:15. | :00:17.
The revellers head home and the clean up begins as T In The | :00:18. | :00:22.
Next for the world champions is Scotland as the two sides meet | :00:23. | :00:32.
Teams with a high expectation on them are more easy to beat. They are | :00:33. | :00:47.
more vulnerable and it might be an opportunity for us. | :00:48. | :00:56.
Extra police patrols are in operation in the Morningside area | :00:57. | :01:01.
of Edinburgh after an elderly woman was stabbed and possibly sexually | :01:02. | :01:06.
The attack happened on Friday afternoon and the 85-year-old victim | :01:07. | :01:09.
is in a critical but stable condition in hospital. | :01:10. | :01:12.
The incident is being treated as attempted murder. | :01:13. | :01:15.
It was in this far -- quiet area of Morningside that the woman was | :01:16. | :01:29.
attacked on Friday afternoon. Her husband had gone to the local shops | :01:30. | :01:33.
and when he returned he found his wife lying on the floor with life | :01:34. | :01:38.
threatening injuries. We can confirm from her injuries that she has | :01:39. | :01:41.
certainly been stabbed and there is evidence of blunt force trauma to | :01:42. | :01:45.
the lady and she may have been the victim of a sexual assault. The | :01:46. | :01:49.
police want to trace a man who was seen outside her home on Friday | :01:50. | :01:54.
afternoon. He is described as average build and 18 to 30 years old | :01:55. | :01:59.
with short dark hair and there could be a totally innocent explanation | :02:00. | :02:03.
for him being there but we are keen to trace him and eliminate him from | :02:04. | :02:07.
the enquiry. The events have shocked people living here. We do not know | :02:08. | :02:11.
much about it but we are keeping our fingers crossed that she is OK. It | :02:12. | :02:18.
is usual and quite terrifying for the older people. Police say attacks | :02:19. | :02:22.
like this are rare and they have brought in extra officers to provide | :02:23. | :02:37.
support. They are to reassure the community and also if anyone has | :02:38. | :02:39.
seen or heard anything suspicious over the last week, no matter how | :02:40. | :02:42.
trivial, they can speak to officers on the street and they can let us | :02:43. | :02:45.
know what may be important in the investigation going forward. As they | :02:46. | :02:47.
police continue their enquiries the victim remains in a critical goal -- | :02:48. | :02:50.
critical condition in hospital and police are warning people here to | :02:51. | :02:56.
always ask for identification from anyone who calls at their door. | :02:57. | :03:03.
A Scottish university is about to start a major trial | :03:04. | :03:05.
of a scheme to allow students to get their degrees more quickly. | :03:06. | :03:08.
Abertay University will give students doing certain courses | :03:09. | :03:10.
the chance to complete their degrees in three years instead of the | :03:11. | :03:13.
traditional four, by dramatically reducing the length of holidays. | :03:14. | :03:15.
Our education correspondent Jamie McIvor's been finding out more. | :03:16. | :03:22.
Graduation day at Abertay University in Dundee. It is the end of four | :03:23. | :03:29.
years of hard study. In years to come it will be possible for some | :03:30. | :03:34.
students to get their degree more quickly if they want to. The idea is | :03:35. | :03:39.
to let students complete four years of study in just three by having | :03:40. | :03:44.
shorter holidays. In our usual programme students study from 30 | :03:45. | :03:48.
weeks a year as in other universities but if students study | :03:49. | :03:52.
for 45 weeks a year, they will still have holidays but they will be able | :03:53. | :03:56.
to progress more quickly and graduate sooner but the experience | :03:57. | :04:00.
week by week and hour by hour is exactly the same. These two people | :04:01. | :04:05.
studied together but they disagree what they would have done. I think | :04:06. | :04:10.
it gives students the ability to get into the workplace earlier and I | :04:11. | :04:13.
think that would be beneficial -- beneficial to the University of the | :04:14. | :04:18.
student. I liked having the long summer because you can go away and | :04:19. | :04:23.
get experience in different fields. The trial has implications for the | :04:24. | :04:29.
university staff as well. We are working with the staff in terms of | :04:30. | :04:32.
preparing them for the changes and we think it is absolutely feasible | :04:33. | :04:37.
that we can do this and we are keen that they maintain their research | :04:38. | :04:41.
and it is more about how we manage the workload and the expectations. | :04:42. | :04:49.
This is not the first time three-year degrees have been mooted | :04:50. | :04:52.
but it is going to be the most widespread trial of the idea and the | :04:53. | :04:59.
University may then extend it to other subjects. | :05:00. | :05:02.
We met the former soldier who lost his legs in Afghanistan | :05:03. | :05:05.
who's power lifting in the forthcoming Commonwealth Games. | :05:06. | :05:07.
In sport, Scotland can beat the World Cup Champions, Germany. | :05:08. | :05:10.
That's according to the former Scotland manager who | :05:11. | :05:12.
And Lynsey Sharp admits her fifth place finish in the Diamond League | :05:13. | :05:17.
has taught her a lesson for Glasgow 2014. | :05:18. | :05:28.
The clean up has been underway all day at Balado in Kinross-shire after | :05:29. | :05:32.
it hosted its last T In The Park music festival. 85,000 music fans | :05:33. | :05:35.
were there over the three days but police say crime levels were low | :05:36. | :05:38.
with fewer arrest than last year. Andrew Anderson reports. | :05:39. | :05:47.
As the rain started to fall on a Balado, so did the silence. The | :05:48. | :05:54.
music was over for another year. The T In The Park tented village | :05:55. | :05:59.
deserted. One tent seems to be making its own way home. The last of | :06:00. | :06:06.
85,000 music fans were saluted -- slowly drifting away. Good memories | :06:07. | :06:11.
of this music Festival and the last on these fields. It is a fantastic | :06:12. | :06:14.
place to have it and it has always been good but we are looking forward | :06:15. | :06:18.
to next year because it is going to be big and have the castle there and | :06:19. | :06:22.
it will be really beautiful but it will be missed. Yes, it will be. | :06:23. | :06:28.
Arctic monkeys brought this T In The Park to a close and it was an | :06:29. | :06:31.
emotional event. Next year these fans will be heading for the other | :06:32. | :06:38.
side of Perthshire. Concerns about an underground oil pipeline at | :06:39. | :06:43.
Balado have forced the move. There were people in the campsite saying | :06:44. | :06:47.
they loved it here which we thought it was great and thousands of people | :06:48. | :06:53.
were shouting it at same time and the local community have been | :06:54. | :06:57.
fantastic and there are a lot of great friendships and relationships | :06:58. | :06:59.
that we have built up and we we almost everyone here and it has been | :07:00. | :07:05.
a great home and we would like to thank the community for letting it | :07:06. | :07:08.
be at home for the last 18 years. As the clear up operation began the | :07:09. | :07:12.
police said they were happy with the fans. It has gone exceptionally well | :07:13. | :07:15.
and the crowd came to this last event here with a great attitude and | :07:16. | :07:20.
we can only praise the behaviour of the people who have been here. It is | :07:21. | :07:26.
farewell to Balado and T In The Park believe the new venue will be just | :07:27. | :07:28.
as good for the fans and the bands. A look at other stories from the | :07:29. | :07:33.
across the country: A reactor in East Lothian has | :07:34. | :07:44.
stopped producing power due to an unplanned outage. EDF energy said | :07:45. | :07:47.
the reactor went off-line this afternoon. The unit is expected to | :07:48. | :07:53.
remain unavailable until next week. The spokesman said there were no | :07:54. | :07:57.
safety, health or environmental impacts. | :07:58. | :08:00.
A man has been taken to hospital with serious leg injuries after an | :08:01. | :08:03.
accident at an industrial estate in Aberdeenshire. The accident happened | :08:04. | :08:09.
at hunting oil services and ambulance and fire crews were called | :08:10. | :08:12.
out. Staff at Scotland's largest bus | :08:13. | :08:18.
company will receive an extra ?120 from their employer for their | :08:19. | :08:22.
contribution to the hosting of the Commonwealth Games. Each of the | :08:23. | :08:27.
staff will receive the one-off payment providing they worked their | :08:28. | :08:29.
rostered shifts throughout the event. The sum was agreed through | :08:30. | :08:35.
unit in -- union negotiations. A consultation on developments in | :08:36. | :08:39.
the Loch Lomond and natural Park has closed today after the deadline was | :08:40. | :08:45.
extended. The park says that the current infrastructure cannot cope | :08:46. | :08:48.
with pressure and it is planning to update the infrastructure to see it | :08:49. | :08:53.
through the next 20 years. -- Loch Lomond and Trossachs National Park. | :08:54. | :09:02.
The athletes in Team Scotland are now going | :09:03. | :09:04.
through their final preparations for the Commonwealth Games, | :09:05. | :09:06.
Amongst them those who will be taking part in the para sports is | :09:07. | :09:11.
former Royal Engineer Micky Yule who lost both legs while serving | :09:12. | :09:14.
He is competing in the power lifting and after coming | :09:15. | :09:17.
fifth in the world championships this year, he is very focussed | :09:18. | :09:20.
In 2010 a roadside bomb robbed Micky Yule of his legs but not his | :09:21. | :09:26.
competitive spirit. Four years ago at this time I was in an intensive | :09:27. | :09:29.
care unit because I had just got injured in Afghanistan and I washed | :09:30. | :09:33.
-- watched the World Cup final from intensive care and I was trying to | :09:34. | :09:37.
catch some of the other Games in there so it has gone full circle. | :09:38. | :09:44.
The Commonwealth Games is a very significant milestone. This might be | :09:45. | :09:49.
the end of the beginning so it is the end to getting overall of your | :09:50. | :09:52.
injuries and a rehab and the surgeries and now it is moving on to | :09:53. | :09:55.
getting on with your life and better stuff. Mickey is from muscle bra and | :09:56. | :10:01.
he was powerlifting when he had his own legs but the level of training | :10:02. | :10:07.
he did then and now just does not compare. I am working a lot harder. | :10:08. | :10:11.
It means that all of my lifts have gone up from what I used to lift | :10:12. | :10:16.
when I was able-bodied to what I am lifting now with my disabilities. It | :10:17. | :10:21.
is probably about 30 kilograms more. He is thinking more about Glasgow | :10:22. | :10:29.
and hopefully Rio than hell but I do not think it is a big day in my | :10:30. | :10:33.
life, it is an annoying day and not the best AI and going to have, I am | :10:34. | :10:37.
sure I will have better but I do not dwell on it too much. There is too | :10:38. | :10:40.
much going on to start thinking about and too many things to | :10:41. | :10:45.
achieve. Micky Yule will have to keep this focus and concentration on | :10:46. | :10:48.
to start thinking about and too many things to achieve. Micky Yule will | :10:49. | :10:50.
have to keep this focus and concentration longer | :10:51. | :11:00.
With just over a week until the Commonwealth Games there | :11:01. | :11:03.
are still tickets available for some of the most sought-after events. | :11:04. | :11:05.
The Glasgow 2014 website shows tickets still for sale for | :11:06. | :11:08.
a number of medal sessions including the men's and women's 100m finals. | :11:09. | :11:10.
Organisers say additional tickets were made available after final | :11:11. | :11:14.
confirmation from tour operators, participating nations and sponsors. | :11:15. | :11:16.
They say it is a small percentage of the overall capacity. | :11:17. | :11:30.
With just nine days until the start of the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow | :11:31. | :11:33.
we'll continue our look at some of the Scottish athletes who've | :11:34. | :11:36.
Every night this week we'll feature one athlete from across a range | :11:37. | :11:40.
Tonight we hear from the hurdler whose face appears | :11:41. | :11:43.
Poster girl Elidh Child says the thought of competing in these | :11:44. | :11:47.
Our Games reporter Jane Lewis caught up with her in her adopted home | :11:48. | :11:51.
than Bath is an English city boasting Georgian architecture and | :11:52. | :11:55.
picturesque landscape, hinting to past industry. The Roman baths | :11:56. | :12:00.
attract millions of visitors every year but this world-class athlete | :12:01. | :12:04.
has not been among them, despite living here for three years. I moved | :12:05. | :12:10.
here to train with Malcolm Arnold and be with the squad of hurdlers | :12:11. | :12:14.
that he has their and he coached Colin Jackson to his success and he | :12:15. | :12:19.
has world champion, and Olympic champion and world record holders so | :12:20. | :12:25.
he is the for hurdles. I know we are in Bath but wherever you go in | :12:26. | :12:30.
Glasgow you are the poster girl. It is really nice that people are | :12:31. | :12:34.
getting behind the Games. Being a poster girl comes with pressure but | :12:35. | :12:40.
it just happened for me. Hopefully I can make everyone proud. He started | :12:41. | :12:44.
as a swimmer, why not go down the swimming route? You had to train | :12:45. | :12:49.
twice a day, first thing in the morning and if anyone knows me I am | :12:50. | :12:54.
not the best morning person. At the time I was having more success in | :12:55. | :12:58.
the athletics so I love the swimming and I still try to go swimming as | :12:59. | :13:01.
often as I can and I love to watch it but I do not think I would have | :13:02. | :13:06.
been as good. I think I have had a lot more success in athletics and I | :13:07. | :13:10.
would have in swimming. In terms of what you dream about four Glasgow | :13:11. | :13:15.
2014, do you let yourself daydream? I want to go there and run to form. | :13:16. | :13:19.
I want my fastest race of the year to be on that track. All those | :13:20. | :13:24.
minerals will hopefully fill you with something. Good luck. Thank you | :13:25. | :13:35.
very much. Cheers. Now some news just coming into us tonight. At | :13:36. | :14:02.
around 1030 Jean Campbell was seen on CCTV walking her dog to Crown | :14:03. | :14:07.
Hill Park. She never made it back to her flat which was nearby. The next | :14:08. | :14:12.
morning her husband came home from his night shift. He went to look for | :14:13. | :14:17.
her as she was not in the flat. He found his wife's body in the park. | :14:18. | :14:22.
Their dog was still there. Police say she had died of Ireland to | :14:23. | :14:30.
death. The case featured twice on the BBC Crimewatch programme. During | :14:31. | :14:34.
an appeal last month the police said her family had been devastated by | :14:35. | :14:40.
the loss of a wife, mother and grandmother and they deserved | :14:41. | :14:43.
answers. This evening two men appeared here at Glasgow Sheriff | :14:44. | :14:47.
Court. Paul Ward was charged with the murder of Jean Campbell and | :14:48. | :14:52.
22-year-old Thomas Leydon was accused of attempting to convert the | :14:53. | :14:56.
course of justice. Neither made any plea or declaration and both are | :14:57. | :15:12.
being held in custody. It is back to sport now and we just have a little | :15:13. | :15:16.
bit of football. Germany thought they had met their biggest challenge | :15:17. | :15:20.
but worst to come. They have no idea what lies ahead, | :15:21. | :15:23.
who could it be? Scotland can beat | :15:24. | :15:27.
the new world champions. So says a man who knows what it's | :15:28. | :15:29.
like to win against Germany, After their victory over Argentina | :15:30. | :15:32.
last night, the World Cup winners' next competitive match is in | :15:33. | :15:36.
September against Gordon Strachan's If you are looking for a German | :15:37. | :15:53.
football top, you may have to act fast. This store in Glasgow expects | :15:54. | :15:59.
to sell out tonight. It has captured the imagination and they may not | :16:00. | :16:04.
have the megastars like Lionel messy or Cristiano Ronaldo but the | :16:05. | :16:07.
Scottish people appreciate the way they have played the game. The | :16:08. | :16:12.
reason this name on this shirt is proving popular might be something | :16:13. | :16:17.
to do with a special goal last night on a specially Asian. Working it in | :16:18. | :16:23.
and a chance. Mac he has scored for Germany. Germany are the champions | :16:24. | :16:28.
of world football and their next competitive match is Scotland. My | :16:29. | :16:33.
friend is going to Germany just for the atmosphere of the match because | :16:34. | :16:37.
it will be some reception and it will be an amazing stadium. I am | :16:38. | :16:41.
looking forward to it. We have a past record of beating current world | :16:42. | :16:45.
champions on their own turf so I think we can go there and do it. I | :16:46. | :16:50.
think we will win 2-1 against Germany. Not so fanciful if you | :16:51. | :16:56.
remember Germany hosting a thin 1999. The man who masterminded that | :16:57. | :17:01.
when is tipping Scotland to cause another upset. I genuinely think we | :17:02. | :17:05.
will get at least a draw. There might be a bit of complacency | :17:06. | :17:11.
setting in after that result and the expectation, teams when there is | :17:12. | :17:13.
expectation on them are more easy to beat. I will take that point. Eat is | :17:14. | :17:23.
not wrong in saying that. Scotland are past masters at beating world | :17:24. | :17:28.
champions, most famously England in 1967 and the latest edition of | :17:29. | :17:33.
football's oldest international fixture has been confirmed for | :17:34. | :17:37.
Celtic Park in November. It would be great to get a bit more | :17:38. | :17:49.
of that. Celtic have travelled for their Champions League qualifier. It | :17:50. | :17:53.
is the first competitive match in the season and the first time at the | :17:54. | :17:58.
health for Ronnie and John. We are looking forward to this and we want | :17:59. | :18:01.
to be there. We want to be on the big stage. We want to take care of | :18:02. | :18:07.
the team tomorrow night but it will not be easy, it never is at the | :18:08. | :18:10.
start of the season. We will look forward to it because it is a good | :18:11. | :18:15.
challenge. A chance of a first major for Monty. Colin Montgomery has been | :18:16. | :18:20.
invited to next year's US Open having just claimed the US senior | :18:21. | :18:25.
title in a play-off. Luke Patience and his partner Elliot | :18:26. | :18:29.
Willis have won the European Championships in Athens. They built | :18:30. | :18:33.
up an unassailable lead over their rivals and took a title with a day | :18:34. | :18:38.
to stare -- spare in the event. The world athletes have started | :18:39. | :18:42.
arriving for the Commonwealth Games. The sports village in Aberdeen is | :18:43. | :18:46.
now home to team Cameroon and the Africans are training in the | :18:47. | :18:49.
north-east before moving into the Games Village for 2014. | :18:50. | :18:54.
There are more sports stories plus all the latest news 24 hours a day | :18:55. | :18:56.
on our website. Talking of the Commonwealth Games, | :18:57. | :19:02.
the UK and European 800m champion Lynsey Sharp says she is determined | :19:03. | :19:04.
to run at her best in Glasgow, despite revealing she'll need this | :19:05. | :19:07.
surgery this autumn. And she admits she's learned | :19:08. | :19:09.
a lot after finishing fifth at this weekend's Diamond League | :19:10. | :19:12.
meeting at Hampden. Here's our Commonwealth Games | :19:13. | :19:15.
reporter, Lisa Summers. It was a strong line-up for the 800 | :19:16. | :19:34.
metres final. Lynsey Sharp has been in top form. She smashed her | :19:35. | :19:37.
personal best and got under two minutes less than two weeks ago and | :19:38. | :19:41.
she was a fraction away from that this weekend but the end result was | :19:42. | :19:46.
a sixth place. I was disappointed straight after the race but after | :19:47. | :19:51.
looking at it back it really wasn't as bad as I first made out. She is | :19:52. | :19:56.
fighting an infection in her Achilles heel that will leave her | :19:57. | :20:01.
needing surgery in the autumn. It has been a chronic infection so I | :20:02. | :20:05.
have to dress it every day and put a silver dressing inside it to keep it | :20:06. | :20:09.
open so that the infection has somewhere to get out because if it | :20:10. | :20:13.
closes over it will swell up. At night I have to put a vacuum | :20:14. | :20:18.
dressing on it which literally sucks out the infection. Today she is | :20:19. | :20:22.
giving a masterclass to aspiring athletes in Edinburgh. Turn and go | :20:23. | :20:27.
the other way. She will run in the Madrid this weekend before returning | :20:28. | :20:30.
to Scotland and Hamdan for the Commonwealth Games. Hopefully at the | :20:31. | :20:36.
Commonwealth I will not get a fright when I see the massive crowd amber | :20:37. | :20:38.
lights on because I have already been out there and seen it. | :20:39. | :20:43.
And Jackie, I believe you have a particular | :20:44. | :20:44.
She will be thinking that I am stalking her. I knew her as a baby. | :20:45. | :21:11.
I changed her nappy. We have got it out of her! | :21:12. | :21:20.
The Queens Batten relay has reached Inverclyde. Among the places people | :21:21. | :21:30.
turned out work Port Glasgow and there was a dragon among the baton | :21:31. | :21:34.
bearers. It is seven years to the days since | :21:35. | :21:40.
John Muir's son was murdered in an unprovoked knife attack. The baton | :21:41. | :21:44.
has a knack of honouring achievement and its arrival here was to pay | :21:45. | :21:51.
tribute to John Neill's tireless campaigning for stricter knife laws. | :21:52. | :21:55.
It is seven years since the incident, it is his seventh | :21:56. | :22:01.
anniversary today. Duncan Ballantyne proved that fitness is not just a | :22:02. | :22:05.
business opportunity as he did his lap of honour with local children. | :22:06. | :22:10.
The Dragons Den star was nominated for his charity work. I enjoy it. | :22:11. | :22:15.
Half of my work now is involved in charitable stuff and I am fortunate | :22:16. | :22:19.
that my company allows me to do things like that so it is great. The | :22:20. | :22:24.
wind and rain struggled to dent the mood in the face of song and dance | :22:25. | :22:28.
from local children who greeted the arrival of a famous face from | :22:29. | :22:32.
Waterloo Road which is filmed here. It is an exciting thing to be part | :22:33. | :22:37.
of and I got nervous when I saw the baton coming down and I didn't want | :22:38. | :22:41.
to drop it. It is a really good atmosphere here. With just over a | :22:42. | :22:48.
week to go until the Games the baton is tantalisingly close to Glasgow | :22:49. | :22:50.
with the help of some celebrity friends. | :22:51. | :22:57.
Within the half -- last half hour two of the baton bearers did | :22:58. | :23:03.
something pretty special. David passed the baton to his partner | :23:04. | :23:08.
Susan and we can see it, he presented her with a ring and asked | :23:09. | :23:13.
her to marry them. She said yes, thank goodness, and after posing for | :23:14. | :23:16.
the pictures, sheep and after posing for the pictures, eat that! | :23:17. | :23:26.
How do I follow this tonight? I do not know. It is a mixed bag as far | :23:27. | :23:33.
as the weather is concerned with some dry days and fairly wet days in | :23:34. | :23:38.
the forecast this week as well. Tonight the rain has been plaguing | :23:39. | :23:42.
Scotland and it will continue to move away into the North Sea. It | :23:43. | :23:47.
will eventually become confined to Shetland. Elsewhere it becomes dry | :23:48. | :23:52.
with clear spells. They will be a few showers across western and | :23:53. | :23:56.
northern coastal areas. Not a cold night to come. Temperatures should | :23:57. | :24:00.
hold up around double figures. In some sheltered rural spots it will | :24:01. | :24:04.
be around five or 6 degrees. The wind will ease down with the effects | :24:05. | :24:25.
-- exceptional some isolated showers and the rain across Shetland were | :24:26. | :24:30.
clear during the day as well. Taking a closer look at around 4pm | :24:31. | :24:37.
tomorrow, spells of sunshine and brightness. Temperatures will | :24:38. | :24:42.
respond accordingly. Highs of around 21 or 22 degrees will be similar | :24:43. | :24:48.
across the north-east. More cloud in the Outer Hebrides and sky and the | :24:49. | :24:51.
Highlands tomorrow afternoon and we will see some rain following year | :24:52. | :24:55.
later and highs of around 17 degrees. Tomorrow evening we hold | :24:56. | :25:02.
onto a lot of dry and bright weather, just one or two showers | :25:03. | :25:07.
around, especially over high ground. More in the way of cloud across | :25:08. | :25:11.
western parts and we will eventually see the rain moving in during the | :25:12. | :25:15.
overnight period. Taking a look ahead to Wednesday, cloudy and wet | :25:16. | :25:19.
is how it starts but the rain will tend to fragment during the day and | :25:20. | :25:23.
there will be dry and bright interludes with highs of 21 degrees. | :25:24. | :25:26.
That is the forecast. Now, a reminder of tonight's main | :25:27. | :25:28.
news: Extra police patrols are in place in | :25:29. | :25:38.
Morningside after an elderly woman was stabbed and possibly sexually | :25:39. | :25:44.
assaulted at home. That is reporting Scotland. Good evening. | :25:45. | :25:47. |
