- so it's goodbye from me - and on BBC One we now | :00:00. | :00:00.
The Commonwealth Games are just a day away. | :00:00. | :00:07.
Amongst the thousands arriving in Glasgow are people from trade and | :00:08. | :00:10.
industry and politicians trying to forge trade links across the globe. | :00:11. | :00:15.
As temperatures soar in the city, local people head to | :00:16. | :00:18.
their very own beach, specially built in the East End. | :00:19. | :00:21.
We'll be asking if people living in one of Scotland's poorest areas | :00:22. | :00:24.
What happens when it is finished? It is not as rough as it used to be, | :00:25. | :00:40.
not as violent. There are no youth clubs, just normal clubs, and there | :00:41. | :00:44.
will be nothing for the children to do. | :00:45. | :00:47.
Also on the programme, A special look inside | :00:48. | :00:51.
the games village, the temporary home for some 6000 athletes. | :00:52. | :00:56.
The baton heads into the national stadium in the | :00:57. | :00:59.
hands of the Scotland manager before joining a conga in Castlemilk. | :01:00. | :01:02.
And he might not be competing, but Sir Chris Hoy says Team Scotland's | :01:03. | :01:05.
With just one day to the start of the games hundreds | :01:06. | :01:24.
of business people and politicians from across the Commonwealth have | :01:25. | :01:26.
been meeting in Glasgow to try to forge trade links to benefit both | :01:27. | :01:29.
The First Minister says that the country's profile has never | :01:30. | :01:33.
been higher and that he hopes the games will be a catalyst | :01:34. | :01:36.
Here's our business correspondent, David Henderson. | :01:37. | :01:40.
Whisky, oil, wheat, and science. They are among our greatest export | :01:41. | :01:47.
and mean jobs for thousands of people up and down the country, so | :01:48. | :01:51.
how does Scotland make the most of what it has got? This event aims to | :01:52. | :01:58.
do just that, as sporting stars prepare for competition, business | :01:59. | :02:02.
leaders are here for cooperation. They are from all over the | :02:03. | :02:04.
Commonwealth and have come to Glasgow to make deals. We have been | :02:05. | :02:12.
doing a lot of work with countries leading up to this. We are holding | :02:13. | :02:17.
targeted events, 11 in total. This will mean opportunities for | :02:18. | :02:21.
Commonwealth investment in Scotland, and we will be following | :02:22. | :02:26.
up with our series of one-to-one meetings, and in the years to come | :02:27. | :02:29.
we will mind those opportunities very deeply. Our ten months, this | :02:30. | :02:36.
baton has been travelling all over the Commonwealth. For the man who | :02:37. | :02:41.
designed it, the legacy of the games is already clear. Scientists are out | :02:42. | :02:48.
in Australia at the moment using our machinery that we produced to make | :02:49. | :02:57.
this vaccine. It has a huge market. Tens of millions of dollars worth of | :02:58. | :03:02.
revenue, and it has been a cognition of scientists working together with | :03:03. | :03:05.
engineers that has enabled this vaccine to be produced. The | :03:06. | :03:11.
organisers of today cosmic event hope that this magnificent backdrop | :03:12. | :03:15.
will put people in the mid-to do business. There is so much at stake. | :03:16. | :03:22.
The export of Scotland to the rest of the Commonwealth are currently | :03:23. | :03:24.
worth more than ?2 billion each year. The games are set to showcase | :03:25. | :03:30.
the city around the world, and as talks go on behind the scenes, these | :03:31. | :03:35.
visitors may be learning that Scotland is open for business. | :03:36. | :03:37.
One area of Glasgow that's hoping to benefit from the legacy of the Games | :03:38. | :03:40.
Our Commonwealth Games Reporter, Lisa Summers, joined some of | :03:41. | :03:43.
the residents as they had a street party to coincide with the games. | :03:44. | :03:51.
Participation was the aim. The park of Calton was transformed into a | :03:52. | :04:01.
party for all the residents and young. Some were multitasking in the | :04:02. | :04:07.
sun. I am a volunteer driver. At the moment, it has been quite quiet and | :04:08. | :04:11.
there has been a lot of downtime where we are waiting to pick up | :04:12. | :04:17.
clients, and last night I was talked into doing a belly dance lesson with | :04:18. | :04:24.
the divers in my team. Carlton is an area of deprivation and low life | :04:25. | :04:27.
expectancy, but many are trying to use the games to make a difference. | :04:28. | :04:33.
We are always being told we are a deprived area, but we are fighting | :04:34. | :04:38.
to make it better every day. Today, it is all about India, tomorrow the | :04:39. | :04:42.
Caribbean, to morrow after that Australia. People you are not | :04:43. | :04:48.
optimistic that the games will have a lasting effect. I don't think it | :04:49. | :04:55.
will change it. We will have a party for the children, but what happens | :04:56. | :04:58.
when it is finished? There is nothing for them to do. It is not as | :04:59. | :05:03.
rough as it used to be. Not as violent. The Commonwealth is only | :05:04. | :05:09.
going to last about ten or 11 days, there is no youth clubs, just normal | :05:10. | :05:15.
clubs, and there will be nothing for the kids around here to do. The | :05:16. | :05:20.
community secured ?10,000 through the games to put on this week of | :05:21. | :05:27.
events. I would like to see us turn round the reputation of this area, | :05:28. | :05:31.
because it is a fantastic place. It has its issues, but actually there | :05:32. | :05:36.
are a lot of fantastic families that do things for each other and I would | :05:37. | :05:40.
love to see more of that. The games will be gone in a fortnight, as will | :05:41. | :05:45.
this temporary party, but there is a hope that the spotlight on the east | :05:46. | :05:47.
end will remain. More than 6000 people will be | :05:48. | :05:50.
staying in the Athletes' Village Laura Bicker has been to see how | :05:51. | :05:53.
the athletes are settling Keys to a new home for the whole | :05:54. | :06:08.
team. Although they have not had to travel too far, Team Scotland is | :06:09. | :06:13.
determined to make its presence known. It is incredible, we are just | :06:14. | :06:19.
so happy that it is here, because it makes us feel so special. We walk | :06:20. | :06:23.
around wearing our blue colours, and it makes us feel great. Everyone | :06:24. | :06:27.
says good luck. Everyone team has its own section of the village. This | :06:28. | :06:32.
team are using it to play volleyball. Their neighbours are in | :06:33. | :06:41.
the lion 's den. Team England will be cooling off after competing in | :06:42. | :06:44.
one of these. And I is bad. Then there is the room of pain for | :06:45. | :06:52.
physiotherapy. We are at the higher echelons of human performance year. | :06:53. | :06:56.
The tiniest differences will make a huge difference. They could change | :06:57. | :07:01.
the result from bronze to gold just with the smallest of tweaks. The | :07:02. | :07:07.
village has grown out of the East End. The number of families -- a | :07:08. | :07:11.
number of families and businesses were moved out to create this | :07:12. | :07:16.
village for 6500 athletes, but by December it will all be turned back | :07:17. | :07:22.
into housing. 700 of these energy efficient homes will be for sale and | :07:23. | :07:25.
rent once the games are over. For now, having Usain Bolt as a | :07:26. | :07:31.
neighbour is providing entertainment for people in this part of Glasgow. | :07:32. | :07:37.
It is all right. They are not noisy or anything. They are quite nice. I | :07:38. | :07:44.
am also quite nice. It has been a bit of a nightmare up till now, but | :07:45. | :07:48.
you can feel the buzz, there is certainly a lot of excitement, and I | :07:49. | :07:53.
am glad to be part of it. Many believe the village will be the most | :07:54. | :07:57.
significant legacy of these games. Building on the pass of the city, | :07:58. | :08:01.
and creating a new future, it may have come at a cost and not without | :08:02. | :08:05.
controversy, but now that it is here, the attitude in Glasgow seems | :08:06. | :08:07.
to be very much, bring it on. Media organisations from | :08:08. | :08:11.
across the world have converged Our reporter, Jane Lewis, has been | :08:12. | :08:13.
to see how the city and Scotland is All eyes are on Glasgow and that is | :08:14. | :08:26.
possible because of what is happening here, the International | :08:27. | :08:31.
broadcast Centre. For the duration of the games, this place will be | :08:32. | :08:36.
warm to around 300 media personnel from all across the Commonwealth. I | :08:37. | :08:44.
will be with the news team, because we have sports news every day, so we | :08:45. | :08:48.
will have one of the sections from here twice a day, and then we will | :08:49. | :08:53.
have a daily show for one hour, where we will feature other stories | :08:54. | :08:59.
as well. It is so exciting, especially when you're away with the | :09:00. | :09:03.
crew and it is all teamwork. We have got five channels back home, not | :09:04. | :09:10.
games coverage. There will be team working back in New Zealand as well, | :09:11. | :09:16.
and 24 of us on the ground. We get to work during the day and during | :09:17. | :09:19.
the night, but back home they have to get up early to watch it, but | :09:20. | :09:24.
something about the Commonwealth Games means that Australians don't | :09:25. | :09:28.
mind getting up early to watch it. We are very lucky that we happen to | :09:29. | :09:35.
win a lot of gold medals. I think we have 180 gold medals over the past | :09:36. | :09:40.
Commonwealth Games. This is the main press centre. Around 1400 | :09:41. | :09:45.
journalists will work here as well as 500 photographers. The facilities | :09:46. | :09:52.
are great, the staff are friendly, and I haven't seen all of the | :09:53. | :09:56.
venues, but I imagine they will be good, all of the feedback is that | :09:57. | :09:57.
they are top venues. Well, Jane Lewis is at Glasgow Green | :09:58. | :10:00.
tonight where people will be able to watch tomorrow night's opening | :10:01. | :10:03.
ceremony on big screens. All quiet here at the moment, that | :10:04. | :10:14.
is because the main act has just left the stage. Tomorrow evening, | :10:15. | :10:18.
this place will be heaving as thousands of people make their way | :10:19. | :10:25.
here to watch what has been described as a pre-opening ceremony. | :10:26. | :10:31.
Let's find out more about it. This is the head of culture at Glasgow | :10:32. | :10:34.
2014. What is happening here tomorrow? The show is that 4pm | :10:35. | :10:41.
tomorrow. We have got various singers and lots of other famous | :10:42. | :10:47.
Scottish musicians will be on stage, and then we will go live to | :10:48. | :10:51.
the opening ceremony which will be on the big screens, and people will | :10:52. | :10:54.
be able to enjoy it in the park in the sunshine and have a fantastic | :10:55. | :10:59.
time. Such a massive operation, you want to get it right. Had there been | :11:00. | :11:04.
any problems? Not that I would let you know, but now, everything is on | :11:05. | :11:09.
track. We have got people working 24 hours a day to get this ready, but | :11:10. | :11:13.
we will be absolutely ready for 4pm tomorrow. How many people are you | :11:14. | :11:17.
expecting, and a unique tickets to be here? Yes, you do. We are | :11:18. | :11:22.
expecting over 10,000 people, but there are tickets left, so you can | :11:23. | :11:26.
get a ticket at Glasgow Royal concert Hall. The rest of the time | :11:27. | :11:35.
that the sites is open it is free, people can come in from 10am till | :11:36. | :11:39.
10pm. For tomorrow, you will need a ticket. Thank you. The screens you | :11:40. | :11:48.
can see behind me, once the act leave the stage, people will be | :11:49. | :11:51.
encouraged to stay behind so that they can see the opening ceremony | :11:52. | :11:55.
being beamed back live from Celtic Park, so even if you're not there, | :11:56. | :11:58.
you want to miss a thing. Well, just seven weeks after Glasgow | :11:59. | :12:01.
has hosted the Commonwealth Games, millions of us will be going to the | :12:02. | :12:04.
polls to decide Scotland's future. In "The Games People Play" | :12:05. | :12:08.
the ex-rugby international and now BBC Scotland broadcaster | :12:09. | :12:10.
John Beattie investigates whether gold medals at the Games | :12:11. | :12:12.
will influence whether Scots vote A look at other stories | :12:13. | :12:14.
from the across the country: Fife's Longannet power station has | :12:15. | :12:29.
one of the worst environmental records in | :12:30. | :12:31.
Europe, according to campaigners. It's from a report that ranks plants | :12:32. | :12:35.
in the European Union according to Environmental groups say coal | :12:36. | :12:38.

it's spent more than ?200 million to improve the station's | :12:45. | :12:50.
environmental performance. The owners of Border Fine Arts | :12:51. | :12:54.

after a damaging factory explosion Dumfries Sheriff Court heard that | :12:59. | :13:01.
Enesco Limited of Carlisle had failed to properly assess the risks | :13:02. | :13:07.

colleagues joined family and friends During a 40-year BBC career, | :13:59. | :14:01.
he was a familiar face and voice Back to the Games now and today | :14:02. | :14:08.
and the baton continued it's journey around Glasgow on what is | :14:09. | :14:17.
the last day of the relay. It's now at Queen's Park | :14:18. | :14:21.
on the city's South Side and our Haven't we been lucky with the | :14:22. | :14:40.
weather. That is one thing we can't complain about. The baton has had a | :14:41. | :14:47.
very sunny final day. It has been travelling around Glasgow today, and | :14:48. | :14:51.
many people have managed to carry it is and have their little bit of | :14:52. | :14:57.
fame. What has been clear as the baton has made its journey around | :14:58. | :15:00.
the Commonwealth is how the people who have carried it have been truly | :15:01. | :15:05.
humbled and delighted by the amazing fuss that has been made of them. It | :15:06. | :15:10.
was an early start for the baton on its last day, mountain biking on the | :15:11. | :15:17.
hills around Glasgow. By breakfast time, it was dancing in Castlemilk. | :15:18. | :15:25.
It was amazing. It was the best feeling ever. I didn't expect it to | :15:26. | :15:30.
be so overwhelming. A special breakfast as these dancers were | :15:31. | :15:38.
among those tucking in. I am a bowler, so I am going to watch the | :15:39. | :15:47.
balls. I am looking forward to that. The Scotland football manager | :15:48. | :15:51.
enjoyed his 200 metres. It was strangely very exciting. I thought | :15:52. | :15:56.
it would be good, but I really got excited. In the hidden Gardens, | :15:57. | :16:04.
there was much anticipation and flag-waving. Just to see all the | :16:05. | :16:11.
different cultures and nationalities all getting together and having a | :16:12. | :16:17.
chat and having a great time, it is terrific. Do you think I might have | :16:18. | :16:22.
found our youngest flag waver to date? She is five months, so she | :16:23. | :16:29.
could well be. She is really enjoying it. Despite it being a | :16:30. | :16:35.
really hot day, the baton was snowboarding today. Is this the | :16:36. | :16:42.
hottest day you have ever been on a snowboard I think it must be. It is | :16:43. | :16:47.
pretty worn out here, but it has been great fun. -- pretty warm. I | :16:48. | :16:55.
have a feeling now one will forget this day. Jordan is a volunteer. | :16:56. | :17:05.
What is it like to be travelling up the Clyde with the baton? It is a | :17:06. | :17:11.
real honour. I didn't expect to be doing this. It has left much | :17:12. | :17:22.
excitement and joy in its wake. Now, those people really summing up | :17:23. | :17:31.
the excitement I have seen. When it arrives here tonight, once it | :17:32. | :17:36.
disappears from the stage, but is it, you won't see it again until the | :17:37. | :17:41.
ceremony tomorrow, the massive opening ceremony at Celtic Park, and | :17:42. | :17:46.
of course, it belongs to the Queen, and she will then revealed to us | :17:47. | :17:48.
what she has hidden inside. And staying with sport some wise | :17:49. | :18:01.
words of advice, here's Rhona. Our greatest Olympian Sir Chris Hoy | :18:02. | :18:03.
says Glasgow is ready, but he has no regrets about not taking part | :18:04. | :18:07.
in the Commonwealth Games. Great things can be expected | :18:08. | :18:09.
from Team Scotland as Hoy believes London 2012 was the climax of Sir | :18:10. | :18:24.
Chris Hoy's career. He mastered the pressures of the home crowd to win | :18:25. | :18:29.
his sixth Olympic golds. We'll be up Glasgow crowd benefit Team Scotland? | :18:30. | :18:37.
It can be a double edged sword if you don't use it in the correct way. | :18:38. | :18:42.
If you don't use that energy as something to lift you, if you see it | :18:43. | :18:46.
as pressure or a burden, then it can weigh you down and distract you. I | :18:47. | :18:54.
am sure we will start off well. It is the eve of the opening ceremony. | :18:55. | :19:01.
Is Glasgow ready? Yes, Glasgow is ready. I think we have been ready | :19:02. | :19:06.
for the past year and a half. The excitement has been building. Every | :19:07. | :19:11.
milestone you reach, you can sense the anticipation growing. You can | :19:12. | :19:17.
feel it. Sir Chris Hoy decided to retire from his sport and forego | :19:18. | :19:24.
competing in these games. It is a decision he does not regret. I would | :19:25. | :19:30.
have loved to. I think every games I go to, I will wish I am out there, | :19:31. | :19:35.
because as a former athletes, that is what you want to be doing, but it | :19:36. | :19:40.
is about being realistic, making a decision with your heart and not | :19:41. | :19:44.
your head. I could see that I was not going to be the best. | :19:45. | :19:47.
Best to retire at the top - Now we are getting news from Jamaica | :19:48. | :19:51.
that Usain Bolt says he's ready to put on a good show | :19:52. | :19:53.
Let's have a look at what else is happening in the rest | :19:54. | :19:58.
Scotland's badminton doubles hopes Kirsty Gilmour and Imogen Bankier | :19:59. | :20:02.
They have been drawn against England's fourth seeds | :20:03. | :20:06.
Gabby Adcock and Lauren Smith in the pick of the first-round matches. | :20:07. | :20:11.
Three-time world squash champion Nick Matthew will be | :20:12. | :20:14.
the flag bearer for England at tomorrow night's opening ceremony. | :20:15. | :20:17.
He won singles and doubles gold at the 2010 Commonwealths in Delhi. | :20:18. | :20:21.
Meanwhile, Team England's Dwain Chambers has | :20:22. | :20:26.

Celtic have rejected a bid from Southampton | :20:59. | :21:02.
Sources close to the Parkhead club say the offer made | :21:03. | :21:07.
was derisory and well below the figures reported of ?7.5 million. | :21:08. | :21:13.
Tonight Celtic hope to overcome KR Reykjavik in the second leg of their | :21:14. | :21:17.
The ball is back in Southampton boss backcourt after their first offer | :21:18. | :21:33.
was rejected. The manager says it is good to have other clubs seeking | :21:34. | :21:41.
your top performers. Nevertheless, could tonight be his last match for | :21:42. | :21:46.
Celtic legend Mark you never know with football. We want to end on | :21:47. | :21:54.
something right. It is positive, it is the most important thing to do is | :21:55. | :21:58.
to focus on the right thing, which is playing for Celtic and doing a | :21:59. | :22:04.
good performance, and you always do everything you can as a top | :22:05. | :22:09.
professional. His sale would generate income, as would | :22:10. | :22:12.
progression to the champions league stage. The players are aware of its | :22:13. | :22:21.
importance. It is huge. We all want to be involved in it. The last two | :22:22. | :22:25.
seasons, we have all wanted to be involved in it. Despite their | :22:26. | :22:29.
dominance in the first leg, Celtic may have a one nil lead to show for | :22:30. | :22:34.
their efforts. Now the aim to enhance their superiority. It is | :22:35. | :22:39.
about us. If we are good with the ball, then we will defend. We need | :22:40. | :22:45.
goals, of course. So we also have to attack, we have to play with good | :22:46. | :22:46.
balance. A tie awaits the winners. And Sportsound are | :22:47. | :22:52.

as Professor Stewart Hillis has Professor Hillis, a cardiac | :23:02. | :23:04.
specialist, was involved with the SFA for almost 40 years and an | :23:05. | :23:09.
unprecedented 228 Scotland games. He was also medical advisor to | :23:10. | :23:15.
the world governing body FIFA. And that?s the sport for tonight, | :23:16. | :23:18.
Jackie A popular pond for water sports has | :23:19. | :23:24.
had to cancel its activities because Kayaking has been banned | :23:25. | :23:30.
on Craiglockhart Pond in Edinburgh after | :23:31. | :23:35.
the male bird became aggressive Famed for their elegance and beauty, | :23:36. | :23:48.
these birds are powerful and can be violent if threatened. These ones | :23:49. | :23:54.
are so protective of their young, they have been lunging at children. | :23:55. | :23:59.
Attacking dogs and attacking people. They have tried to attack | :24:00. | :24:07.
the dogs sometimes, even if they haven't gone into the water, so it | :24:08. | :24:12.
can be a little scary. They get up on their wings and stick their necks | :24:13. | :24:20.
out, it is quite aggressive looking. Edinburgh leisure have had to cancel | :24:21. | :24:24.
some courses here for safety reasons. It has lost thousands of | :24:25. | :24:28.
pounds in business. For decades, people and Swans have coexisted, but | :24:29. | :24:35.
this new peer who have been flown in from Newcastle are much more | :24:36. | :24:38.
aggressive, especially for anyone who goes into the water. They can | :24:39. | :24:45.
give you a really bad injury. You have heard of people having their | :24:46. | :24:50.
arms broken, because of the power of the wing, but you have the added | :24:51. | :24:57.
concern if you have children. Water and children is potentially a very | :24:58. | :25:01.
dangerous thing. Anyone going near Swans has been advised to give them | :25:02. | :25:06.
a wide berth until the breeding season ends. Edinburgh leisure will | :25:07. | :25:11.
review the use of the pond as it is not these Swans will return here | :25:12. | :25:26.
next year. -- it is thought. We will be talking about zero-hours contract | :25:27. | :25:30.
and how they are being abused, and I will be asking the Business | :25:31. | :25:34.
Secretary what he intends to do about it at 10:30pm on BBC Two | :25:35. | :25:35.
tonight. Another glorious day for most | :25:36. | :25:37.
of the country - can it really hold And outside risk of a shower, I have | :25:38. | :25:56.
two say. Today has been the warmest day of the year so far in Scotland, | :25:57. | :26:02.
we have been widely into the mid-20s with some spots of cloud bubbling up | :26:03. | :26:07.
from time to time, but we see that melting away this evening to leave | :26:08. | :26:11.
warm spells of sunshine, and overnight it will stay largely dry, | :26:12. | :26:14.
just a few showers in the Western Isles. Low cloud will become | :26:15. | :26:21.
extensive tonight, spilling inland through the great Glen, through the | :26:22. | :26:26.
central belt, a misty and a warm night. Temperature is now lower than | :26:27. | :26:31.
14 Celsius or 15 Celsius. Into tomorrow, and it will be a great | :26:32. | :26:36.
start, that low cloud still fairly extensive, but it will improve | :26:37. | :26:41.
during the morning. For some of us, it will be slow progress. Certainly | :26:42. | :26:47.
for the afternoon, certainly a lot of warm sunshine coming through. | :26:48. | :26:52.
This will be the case for much of the Borders and central belt. | :26:53. | :26:57.
Temperatures of 24 Celsius or 25 Celsius. Some eastern parts will | :26:58. | :27:02.
hold onto this low cloud, part of Fife and Aberdeenshire. Temperatures | :27:03. | :27:10.
will be lower here. Tomorrow evening, it will stay dry. Plenty of | :27:11. | :27:15.
evening sunshine. Then we see that risk of 12 showers for the central | :27:16. | :27:20.
belt, so for the opening ceremony tomorrow evening, just the outside | :27:21. | :27:24.
chance of a shower, but on the wall, the emphasis on dry and bright | :27:25. | :27:30.
weather with light winds. Into Thursday, high pressure continues to | :27:31. | :27:35.
dominate. A very stable weather pattern. Still low cloud and mist to | :27:36. | :27:40.
start, which will burn back to the east coast. Leaving plenty of warm | :27:41. | :27:46.
sunshine and a one day. Temperatures of 25 Celsius or 26 Celsius. A very | :27:47. | :27:50.
similar story on Friday. Plenty of lovely weather to be enjoyed. | :27:51. | :27:56.
Now, a reminder of tonight's main news: | :27:57. | :27:58.
With just one day until the start of the games, hundreds of Commonwealth | :27:59. | :28:01.
business leaders and politicians have been meeting in Glasgow to try | :28:02. | :28:04.
The First Minister says the country's profile's never been | :28:05. | :28:07.
And the bodies of most of the victims killed in the | :28:08. | :28:10.
Malaysia Airlines crash have arrived in Kharkiv, a city controlled | :28:11. | :28:12.
The remains were taken overnight from rebel-held eastern Ukraine, | :28:13. | :28:16.
Our next main bulletin is just after the 10.00pm news. | :28:17. | :28:19.
Until then, from everyone on the team | :28:20. | :28:22. |
