Rosdeep Adekoya claimed Mikaeel Kular had disappeared | :00:11. | :00:12.

She'd actually beaten him, before travelling to Kirkcaldy | :00:18. | :00:19.
Fife Council says it will conduct a significant case review. | :00:20. | :00:25.

Even myself, I always knew he was going to make it very far in the | :00:59. | :01:02.

Mikaeel Kular in January prompted Hundreds of volunteers were told | :01:21. | :01:25.
they were looking for a three-year-old boy wandering | :01:26. | :01:30.
the streets in his pyjamas. We know now that his mother, | :01:31. | :01:34.
Rosdeep Adekoya, had beaten him so badly that he'd | :01:35. | :01:36.
died at home from his injuries. Today, in court, | :01:37. | :01:40.
she admitted killing her son, putting his body in a suitcase and | :01:41. | :01:43.
burying it in woods in Kirkcaldy. Catriona Renton is at the High Court | :01:44. | :01:47.
in Edinburgh. It was here today where | :01:48. | :01:56.
Rosdeep Adekoya pleaded guilty to She had been charged with murder | :01:57. | :01:59.
but the Crown accepted her plea to the lesser charge of culpable | :02:00. | :02:26.
homicide as they accept she had no This was a story that grabbed the | :02:27. | :02:29.
attention of the nation. It was said that a little boy just | :02:30. | :02:33.
three feet tall had managed to get But, all the time that people | :02:34. | :02:37.
searched, Mikaeel was already dead. Today Rosdeep Adekoya admitted in | :02:38. | :02:44.
court that she killed her son. He had not been at nursery since the | :02:45. | :02:47.
Christmas holidays and because he was sick he did not go with his | :02:48. | :02:52.
brothers and sisters on the 13th of January. His mother says she put him | :02:53. | :02:56.
to bed on the 15th and when she went to wake him he was not there. She | :02:57. | :03:04.
dialled 999. She said she thought Mikaeel had climbed up onto a stool | :03:05. | :03:10.
and unlock the door of their flat. But while she said this she knew | :03:11. | :03:12.
that her little But while she said this she knew | :03:13. | :03:16.

flat as darkness fell on another winter's night. The surge grew and | :03:26. | :03:32.
hundreds of people, neighbours, the police, the Coast Guard and the | :03:33. | :03:36.
public, combed the area and further afield. | :03:37. | :03:40.
The community came together, there were young children, youths who were | :03:41. | :03:46.
normally bad boys were getting involved. It is just the fact that | :03:47. | :03:52.
this community was United was outstanding. | :03:53. | :03:57.
There was no sign of Mikaeel. The search became nationwide, and then | :03:58. | :04:04.
the news that everybody dreaded. We have recovered the body of a | :04:05. | :04:08.
young boy in Fife shortly before midnight. | :04:09. | :04:17.
Mikaeel's body was found 25 miles away in woodland behind his aunt's | :04:18. | :04:21.
house. The mother and her children had lived there 18 months | :04:22. | :04:25.
previously. On the Sunday before he died, the court was told, his mother | :04:26. | :04:29.
had gone out for dinner with her children. When they got home the | :04:30. | :04:34.
child was sick. His mum lost her temper and hit him. That happened on | :04:35. | :04:40.
three occasions that evening. Mikaeel suffered more than 40 | :04:41. | :04:44.
injuries and it is thought a blow to his abdomen caused his death. He got | :04:45. | :04:48.
worse over the next couple of days. His mother was worried about the | :04:49. | :04:51.
bruising so did not take him to His mother was worried about the | :04:52. | :04:55.
doctor. He died in the night after he went to bed on the Tuesday. | :04:56. | :05:01.
Rosdeep Adekoya wrapped him in a duvet, put him in a suitcase and | :05:02. | :05:05.
drove him to the spot where she buried him. The local community and | :05:06. | :05:10.
far beyond were devastated that Mikaeel was dead, heart rating and | :05:11. | :05:15.
to a search that could never have ended any other way. The court heard | :05:16. | :05:19.
that social services were keeping an eye on the family. In May 2012 it | :05:20. | :05:25.
said that the mother's attitude changed and she was going out | :05:26. | :05:29.
drinking. After leaving the children over -- alone after night, Mikaeel | :05:30. | :05:33.
and his twin were taken into care but the following year they lived | :05:34. | :05:40.
back together again. The family had been monitored by social services | :05:41. | :05:46.
but by December that stopped. Today Mikaeel's father was in court to | :05:47. | :05:52.
hear how his son died. He gave no reaction. Neighbours who had been | :05:53. | :05:55.
part of the surge spoke after hearing what had happened. | :05:56. | :06:00.
There will be a lot of angry people here. I am one of them. | :06:01. | :06:09.
Mikaeel's death was tragic. Rosdeep Adekoya will live with this for the | :06:10. | :06:13.
rest of her life. And Rosdeep Adekoya will be | :06:14. | :06:16.
sentenced here at the High Court in Edinburgh next month. | :06:17. | :06:20.
Her lawyer said she is not a monster but a young mother with | :06:21. | :06:23.
Tonight Fife Council has said that it and officers from | :06:24. | :06:26.
Edinburgh Council will conduct a significant case review to | :06:27. | :06:28.
see what lessons can be learned from this little boy's death. | :06:29. | :06:38.
Let's turn to the Commonwealth Games now, | :06:39. | :06:40.
and more Scottish medals this afternoon. | :06:41. | :06:43.
Our reporter Lisa Summers is at the Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome | :06:44. | :06:46.
It is a great deal quieter than it was a couple of hours ago, when Leon | :06:47. | :07:02.
-- Neil Fachie and Craig MacLean took to the track in the tandem time | :07:03. | :07:08.
trial. Craig MacLean is one of the riders that one Scotland's first | :07:09. | :07:16.
ever meant -- medal in 2006. He switched to riding tandem. Neil | :07:17. | :07:24.
Fachie is the current Olympic gold medallist. In the Olympics they were | :07:25. | :07:28.
riding with different partners and they were reunited for the | :07:29. | :07:29.
Commonwealth Games and they gave they were reunited for the | :07:30. | :07:33.
their best in front of the home crowd. | :07:34. | :07:37.
This is where you have to dig so deep. Well of noise them around the | :07:38. | :07:42.
arena. They lost a fraction of time catching one of the sponges on the | :07:43. | :07:46.
inside of the track. It is gold for Scotland! Gold the Neil Fachie! A | :07:47. | :07:53.
standing ovation inside the velodrome and the Paralympic world | :07:54. | :07:56.
champion is now the Commonwealth champion. The half lap was like | :07:57. | :08:06.
pedalling through treacle, well over a second in front of their | :08:07. | :08:12.
opponents. We went so fast and paid for it a | :08:13. | :08:17.
lot, the last lap was our most painful experience and I am glad we | :08:18. | :08:21.
could hang on and do this for the crowd. I am so proud. The first part | :08:22. | :08:30.
of the race you can't -- caught up in everything you have done in | :08:31. | :08:34.
training, and then you get caught up in fatigue and you are aware of the | :08:35. | :08:38.
occasion and the crowd and the noise keeps you going for the last couple | :08:39. | :08:42.
of laps. They will be back out on the track | :08:43. | :08:48.
tomorrow, as will another Scot, Katy Archibald. She could only finish | :08:49. | :08:54.
fourth in her first event, the 3000 metres individual pursuit, but this | :08:55. | :08:58.
20-year-old is a rising star in Scottish cycling and she has another | :08:59. | :09:02.
four events in the Commonwealth Games in which to shine. | :09:03. | :09:07.
Let's find out about another potential success | :09:08. | :09:09.
Our sports presenter Rhona McLeod is by the River Clyde | :09:10. | :09:12.
And you have news of another Scottish medal | :09:13. | :09:15.
I do indeed, and it is another gold in judo. After last night's | :09:16. | :09:29.
glittering performances, a short while ago Sarah Clark from Edinburgh | :09:30. | :09:34.
was fighting for gold in the 63 kilograms category, hoping to better | :09:35. | :09:39.
the silver medal she won at the Manchester Commonwealth Games 12 | :09:40. | :09:45.
years ago. Here is how it happened. This is the transition now. She has | :09:46. | :10:00.
got the roll and now she is going to go for the arm. The arm is out | :10:01. | :10:04.
straight, she gets the submission. That is the gold medal. | :10:05. | :10:11.
I feel like I have done it because of the crowd as well. I have my | :10:12. | :10:18.
family and friends here, and the clubs and stuff, and this was for | :10:19. | :10:29.
Scotland and for them as well. Patrick Dawson has lost in his | :10:30. | :10:33.
bronze medal fight and we are still waiting to hear about Sally Conway. | :10:34. | :10:38.
The standard was set last night by the Renicks sisters. I caught up | :10:39. | :10:43.
with them this morning and they explained the financial and personal | :10:44. | :10:48.
cost to them of winning gold. Unknown yesterday but sporting | :10:49. | :10:52.
history today, the sisters are enjoying all of their well-deserved | :10:53. | :10:55.
attention brought by their fig trees last night. | :10:56. | :11:00.
I am so proud and overwhelmed, it is a great experience to kick off with | :11:01. | :11:09.
a medal. Our dad sent a really nice text in the morning saying whatever | :11:10. | :11:12.
happens he is proud of us anyway but he said he believed we could medal. | :11:13. | :11:17.
Today at their home in he said he believed we could medal. | :11:18. | :11:22.
their parents admitted yesterday's action brought other emotions. | :11:23. | :11:30.
Really nervous, and relief as well. We know they have been working up to | :11:31. | :11:35.
this. We knew they would get a medal, we were hoping for gold, and | :11:36. | :11:41.
that is what they got. With the two of them getting it it is even | :11:42. | :11:48.
better, so now we can celebrate. The sisters are also carers for | :11:49. | :11:51.
Agnes, who suffers from a neurological condition. | :11:52. | :11:58.
You must be very close to the girl as well, does that make it special? | :11:59. | :12:10.
It does, but don't tell them that! The sisters have received great | :12:11. | :12:14.
support from their family but they revealed the enormous financial cost | :12:15. | :12:19.
of the campaign to win gold. It is about ?25,000. Judo is a | :12:20. | :12:26.
national sport all around the world so you have to travel to other | :12:27. | :12:29.
national sport all around the world places to get the fights and the | :12:30. | :12:33.
competitions, it is not like you just travel down to England and | :12:34. | :12:40.
back, you go to Samoa, Japan, the other end of the world, and then | :12:41. | :12:43.
France and that, other end of the world, and then | :12:44. | :12:46.
travelling, but this is what we wanted to do. | :12:47. | :12:49.
travelling, but this is what we Are these financial hits of concern | :12:50. | :12:52.
to Sportscotland? We think we have a good system. | :12:53. | :12:59.
There is no doubt that we have to set a standard and we think we have | :13:00. | :13:07.
a good partnership at the moment and we will continue to try to improve | :13:08. | :13:10.
it. Where did the gold medals rest last | :13:11. | :13:17.
night? I had it just by my bed so I could see it when I woke up in the | :13:18. | :13:22.
morning. Well done to the Renicks sisters, | :13:23. | :13:27.
but I am going back in the whole three, definitely the place to see, | :13:28. | :13:34.
to see if Sally Conway can win that bronze medal. More judo tomorrow, | :13:35. | :13:38.
including Scotland's flag bearer, bronze medal. More judo tomorrow, | :13:39. | :13:42.
we look forward to bringing you details of that. | :13:43. | :13:53.
The 20-year-old swimmer surprised everyone last night | :13:54. | :13:56.
when he beat the Team Scotland poster boy, Michael Jamieson, | :13:57. | :13:58.
Aileen Clarke has been to the town where he learned to swim. | :13:59. | :14:03.
In Vale of Lieven in western bar to ensure the talk today was of the | :14:04. | :14:10.
local lad whose medal has given the area something to smile about. We | :14:11. | :14:18.
were talking about that young boy in the bookies, how great he was. It is | :14:19. | :14:22.
good to get some good news for a change. | :14:23. | :14:25.
Last night it seemed Ross Murdoch could not leave what he had done, | :14:26. | :14:27.
smashing his personal best Commonwealth record. | :14:28. | :14:36.
I want to get some sleep eventually. It took me some time to understand | :14:37. | :14:44.
what I did and I finally got some sleep, about five hours. Team-mate | :14:45. | :14:49.
Michael Jamieson was quick to pay is the man who beat him to gold. He has | :14:50. | :14:53.
written his name in the history books last night but I know he will | :14:54. | :14:59.
have his eye on the 100 as well. He will be dangerous tomorrow night in | :15:00. | :15:04.
the final. At the Vale of Lieven swimming pool | :15:05. | :15:08.
where Ross used to swim and his dad coaches they were glued to the 100 | :15:09. | :15:13.
metres heat this morning and still basking in last night's victory. | :15:14. | :15:19.
Fantastic, this will have a big effect on the whole area. I am | :15:20. | :15:28.
absolutely thrilled that he came home with the gold medal, it is | :15:29. | :15:31.
fantastic for Scotland that they have those boys on the podium. This | :15:32. | :15:38.
was Ross's club and pool until he went to university so there is | :15:39. | :15:44.
immense pride here. The members here swam with him, met with him, there | :15:45. | :15:49.
were shouts, tears, every emotion, and all of these guys were glued to | :15:50. | :15:57.
the TV last night. It was amazing. Even from the age of 12 training | :15:58. | :16:00.
partners say Ross's talent was clear. Even from that age he stood | :16:01. | :16:08.
out with his natural talent and even myself I always knew he was going to | :16:09. | :16:12.
make it very far in the sport and do very well. | :16:13. | :16:17.
There are some very excited people in the pool. Who watched the | :16:18. | :16:24.
swimming last night? Me! What do you want to say the Ross today? Go, | :16:25. | :16:28.
Ross, go, Ross... Although Glasgow is hosting | :16:29. | :16:32.
the Games, not all of the events Apart from the triathlon at | :16:33. | :16:35.
Strathclyde Park, and the diving in Edinburgh, the most remote venue is | :16:36. | :16:39.
the shooting at Carnoustie. That got under way today, and although the | :16:40. | :16:42.
Scots haven't done so well, there's been plenty to keep | :16:43. | :16:45.
the crowds entertained, It is over 90 miles away from | :16:46. | :16:56.
Glasgow but the spirit of the games is very much alive here, a venue | :16:57. | :17:03.
more commonly used by the MoD, now transformed into an impressive | :17:04. | :17:07.
harbour of action for the shooting. It is very different, a different | :17:08. | :17:13.
kind of shooting to the military would use. It is a temporary build | :17:14. | :17:18.
and we are using an existing range as well. | :17:19. | :17:21.
The crowds have certainly enjoyed what I have seen so far. It is | :17:22. | :17:27.
fantastic and it is really important if there is something on your | :17:28. | :17:32.
doorstep to support it. It is a good venue, unbelievable weather. This is | :17:33. | :17:36.
the only time we have come up and it is sunny, unbelievable. What about | :17:37. | :17:41.
the competitors? It has been a tough day for some of the Scots. Sian | :17:42. | :17:47.
Bruce followed to qualify in the women's skeet event. Can we expect | :17:48. | :17:52.
more from the Queens prize pairs? I spoke to one of the Scots involved | :17:53. | :17:58.
in today's's events. You have to shoot 1000 yards, how do | :17:59. | :18:05.
you do it? It is not that different from shooting 50 or 25 metres, but | :18:06. | :18:14.
it is the wind the thing - that is the thing, so you need to read the | :18:15. | :18:19.
wind. That is just what we do, it is fun and challenging. | :18:20. | :18:24.
It has been a fantastic day here today, the weather has been | :18:25. | :18:34.
spectacular, but the haar is coming in. We should see the conclusion of | :18:35. | :18:40.
the 600 yards tomorrow. Both spectators and athletes will be | :18:41. | :18:44.
hoping the weather holds out for tomorrow. As these competitors from | :18:45. | :18:48.
Antigua may find out later in the week, the weather is not always like | :18:49. | :18:51.
this at Carnoustie. Meanwhile, | :18:52. | :18:55.
the Defence Secretary Michael Fallon has said there was "no question" | :18:56. | :18:56.
that the Red Arrows would change the colour of their smoke trails to | :18:57. | :18:59.
represent the Scottish flag His remarks follow reports that | :19:00. | :19:02.
the RAF aerobatic team was forced to change its smoke from blue | :19:03. | :19:05.
and white to its usual red, Glasgow 2014 says there had been | :19:06. | :19:08.
discussions over using blue and white smoke, but that this was | :19:09. | :19:14.
not "formally requested". Dozens of schools across Scotland | :19:15. | :19:20.
are delaying the introduction of new-look Highers in popular | :19:21. | :19:22.
subjects. That's according to research for BBC Scotland. The exams | :19:23. | :19:24.
are being introduced this year to tie them in with the replacement for | :19:25. | :19:28.
Standard Grades. But some schools have chosen to hold off for a year. | :19:29. | :19:32.
The Scottish government said last year that schools could delay the | :19:33. | :19:36.
new Highers for a year, if it was in Thousands of music fans are and then | :19:37. | :19:52.
Friesen Galloway for the annual wicker man festival. They will see | :19:53. | :19:57.
acts including Delaunay tree and Dizzee Rascal. It is the 13th year | :19:58. | :20:06.
of the festival but it is competing for viewers with a certain sporting | :20:07. | :20:10.
event. For us to be 100 miles outside of | :20:11. | :20:15.
Glasgow and not expect it to have an impact was very naive. There are far | :20:16. | :20:22.
fewer people here this year but those who are here will have a | :20:23. | :20:25.
fantastic time, with more grass to sit on and more beer to drink. | :20:26. | :20:30.
Back now to Glasgow's hosting of the Commonwealth Games. | :20:31. | :20:32.
Let's just take a moment to reflect on how the city's been handling | :20:33. | :20:35.
the hundreds of thousands of visitors this week. | :20:36. | :20:37.
Our Games reporter Jane Lewis is at George Square in the city centre. | :20:38. | :20:40.
Jane, give us a sense of how the organisers - and indeed the visitors | :20:41. | :20:43.
Take a look at this place, it is heaving. People are queueing up to | :20:44. | :20:51.
get their hands on heaving. People are queueing up to | :20:52. | :20:56.
goodies, even queueing up to get their picture taken in front of this | :20:57. | :21:02.
wonderful colourful structure. There are around an extra 100,000 people | :21:03. | :21:07.
coming to the city everyday and it seems on the face of it that they | :21:08. | :21:12.
city is coping pretty well with the extra demand. People keep talking | :21:13. | :21:17.
about the friendliness of the locals and in terms of transport I have not | :21:18. | :21:21.
heard too many complaints about people getting to the games. There | :21:22. | :21:25.
have been no horror stories of people struggling to get to the | :21:26. | :21:29.
venues and the people working in the city it has been pretty quiet on | :21:30. | :21:35.
that front. It is only two days in the Glasgow 2014 but I wonder if it | :21:36. | :21:41.
points to the transport system being put in place before the game all | :21:42. | :21:49.
working pretty smoothly. Last night Team Scotland 110 medals and today | :21:50. | :21:55.
they have added two, and they have been gold medals. Let's have a look | :21:56. | :22:06.
at the table. There could be more in the swimming this evening, look out | :22:07. | :22:09.
for Robbie Rennick and James Wallace. | :22:10. | :22:14.
Police Scotland say they will be mounting their biggest ever | :22:15. | :22:18.
operation in Glasgow, mounting their biggest ever | :22:19. | :22:21.
expecting the biggest ever weekend of the games. | :22:22. | :22:25.
expecting the biggest ever weekend under way at Ibrox tomorrow, | :22:26. | :22:30.
continuing on Sunday. The athletics events get under way on Sunday as | :22:31. | :22:33.
well so they will be the hot spots. There will be cultural events taking | :22:34. | :22:39.
place as well tied in with the games, extra people going to | :22:40. | :22:43.
specific areas around the city, but it is fair to say it is only day two | :22:44. | :22:53.
but was go 14 looks so far, so good. -- blahs go 2014. Glasgow 2014. | :22:54. | :23:11.
Here is the earlier satellite picture, almost wall-to-wall | :23:12. | :23:19.
sunshine, and the haar will extend across a good part of eastern | :23:20. | :23:24.
Scotland in the end of the day. It will stay dry overnight, some of the | :23:25. | :23:31.
haar pushing in through the night. Temperature is now lower than 14 | :23:32. | :23:36.
Celsius. The pressure chart is almost like our weather menu if I | :23:37. | :23:39.
can draw your attention to it. This weather front will bring in some | :23:40. | :23:47.
weather but then high pressure builds in from Monday. Tomorrow | :23:48. | :23:51.
starts off on a dry, bright note, apart from the haar to the east of | :23:52. | :24:00.
the -- of Scotland. Then we see rain pushing in from the Western Isles | :24:01. | :24:05.
but come the afternoon most places are holding on for dry and bright | :24:06. | :24:09.
conditions. Just a couple of showers in the southern uppers. Perhaps a | :24:10. | :24:17.
bit of haar towards the east coast. Anger is looking good as well, rain | :24:18. | :24:24.
affecting western coastal areas. A bit of sunshine for the western part | :24:25. | :24:29.
of the Shetland hopefully but that haar never too far away. Some cloud | :24:30. | :24:34.
initially tomorrow but that will lift leaving a dry, bright day, so | :24:35. | :24:40.
take your suncream and water if you are heading to the hills. We will | :24:41. | :24:44.
see rain moving in through the course of the day, coupled with some | :24:45. | :24:49.
hill fog. The rest of Saturday, the rain in the West pushes across the | :24:50. | :24:54.
mainland, not quite reaching eastern areas until tomorrow night -- until | :24:55. | :25:08.
tomorrow night it reaches the East. Sunday, the drier and brighter the | :25:09. | :25:13.
further east you are. Temperatures up to 20 at best but what that means | :25:14. | :25:17.
for the Commonwealth Games, on Saturday night, we have the rugby | :25:18. | :25:23.
sevens, could have outbreaks of rain but still feeling pleasantly warm. | :25:24. | :25:27.
It should feel fresher for the Marathon on Sunday. On Monday we are | :25:28. | :25:32.
looking at another warm day with some sunshine. | :25:33. | :25:36.
The mother of three-year-old Mikaeel Kudla has admitted killing him and | :25:37. | :25:43.
hiding his body in a suitcase in Kirkcaldy. Mikaeel died two days | :25:44. | :25:51.
after being beaten by Rusty took a -- by his mother. | :25:52. | :25:57.
Neil Fachie and Craig MacLean triumphed in para-cycling and there | :25:58. | :26:00.
was also another gold on the judo mat for Sarah Clark. | :26:01. | :26:08.
I will be back with the news and a Commonwealth Games bulletin just | :26:09. | :26:11.
after the ten o'clock news but we will leave you with a look at the | :26:12. | :26:17.
games so far and a musical performance by Nicola Benedetti, | :26:18. | :26:25.
joined by a 70 piece children's Orchestra. | :26:26. | :26:30. |
