The Ryder Cup gets underway in Gleneagles | :00:00. | :00:12.
as thousands flock to see one of sport's most prestigious events. | :00:13. | :00:35.
I was looking forward to it and it didn't really pan out. When I did | :00:36. | :00:40.
start to play well, I never capitalised on it. | :00:41. | :00:43.
The family of an Edinburgh man shot by a prison guard | :00:44. | :00:47.
while being held in a Pakistani jail say they fear there'll be further | :00:48. | :00:50.
And the SNP are calling for control over laws on the controversial | :00:51. | :00:57.
practice of fracking to be part of any new devolution settlement. | :00:58. | :01:13.
The Ryder Cup at Gleneagles in Perthshire is finally underway. | :01:14. | :01:19.
After years of planning and tens of millions spent on preparing the | :01:20. | :01:21.
course and facilities, the three-day match between Europe and the | :01:22. | :01:24.
It's a truly global sporting event, with hundreds of millions | :01:25. | :01:30.
of people expected to watch all over the world. | :01:31. | :01:34.
Sally McNair is there for us this evening. | :01:35. | :01:37.
Sally, what's the atmosphere been like today? | :01:38. | :01:41.
Intense, focused, energised - that's the players and their teams. | :01:42. | :01:45.
The supporters have been fantastically enthusiastic, | :01:46. | :01:50.
despite a rocky start for Europe this morning in the fourballs. | :01:51. | :01:55.
The Ryder Cup is a tournament unlike any other, | :01:56. | :02:01.
mainly, of course, the most intensely fought professional | :02:02. | :02:04.
A huge temporary village has been erected with enormous hospitality | :02:05. | :02:11.
The world's media are here, and there's a vast retail area. | :02:12. | :02:18.
But it's also the one golf event where fans are not asked | :02:19. | :02:21.
Lisa Summers has been out and about. | :02:22. | :02:32.
There is a particular way to behave on a golf course, but when it comes | :02:33. | :02:37.
to the Ryder Cup, that goes out of the window. This team of Vikings | :02:38. | :02:50.
have travelled from Minnesota. We were in Chicago and we said, we have | :02:51. | :02:56.
got to go to Scotland. We believe in this team to win. Their European | :02:57. | :03:02.
rivals have their own unique style. I have been to the British open, the | :03:03. | :03:08.
Scottish open. But the Ryder Cup is fabulous. Streams of spectators have | :03:09. | :03:11.
been arriving at the needles since first light this morning. The | :03:12. | :03:15.
biggest show in golf is underway. With play started, the merchandising | :03:16. | :03:20.
machine is kicking in. Plenty of money is being spent on site, but | :03:21. | :03:24.
the wider economic boost will be a long-term economic benefit to | :03:25. | :03:27.
Scotland. Over the weekend, over a quarter of a million fans will come | :03:28. | :03:32.
to Gleneagles. The economic boost is worth over ?100 million and the | :03:33. | :03:35.
action will be beamed into over 500 million homes. The media operation | :03:36. | :03:40.
is slick and impressive. NBC is the American host broadcaster. Usually | :03:41. | :03:47.
in golf, when a player wins a tournament, they come off and maybe | :03:48. | :03:51.
they hugged their caddy or their wife, but it is a solitary journey. | :03:52. | :03:56.
At the Ryder Cup, and only at the Ryder Cup in golf, do they go | :03:57. | :04:02.
absolutely bananas. Back at Gleneagles, we are a long way away | :04:03. | :04:06.
from bringing home the prestigious cup. There are some crazy outfits on | :04:07. | :04:12.
this golf course, but they do say it is the fans that make this | :04:13. | :04:15.
tournament, and these guys will be making themselves heard. Over to you | :04:16. | :04:41.
guys. ALL SING. # glory, glory, Stevie Gallaher! # glory # Glory, | :04:42. | :04:45.
Glory, Stevie Gallaher! As Lisa said, | :04:46. | :04:49.
this is so much more than simply a golf competition. It's almost a | :04:50. | :04:51.
festival experience. There are people from all over | :04:52. | :04:53.
the world here, many watching the In the retail area, I spoke to | :04:54. | :04:56.
one businessman who said this Takings yesterday alone amounted | :04:57. | :05:00.
to 70% of the entire takings there. So this is big business for the | :05:01. | :05:05.
resort, for golf and for Scotland. Joining me now are two men who've | :05:06. | :05:09.
been involved in the organisation Peter Leaderer is chairman | :05:10. | :05:12.
of Gleneagles Hotels, and Edward Kitson is match director | :05:13. | :05:17.
for Ryder Cup Europe. Peter, this was your vision in 19 | :05:18. | :05:32.
age nine to bring the Ryder Cup back to Scotland. What will it mean for | :05:33. | :05:36.
tourism and the Scottish economy? Yes, it is a proud and emotional day | :05:37. | :05:41.
after 25 year journey hugely important for Gleneagles and for | :05:42. | :05:50.
Scotland. In terms of how people see it and also for years to come. It is | :05:51. | :05:56.
extraordinary. There are fans here from 96 countries. Can Scotland | :05:57. | :06:04.
capitalise on this and sustain it in the future? Absolutely. We have been | :06:05. | :06:10.
holding events for many years. If you look at the, of games, followed | :06:11. | :06:16.
by the Ryder Cup, it is amazing! The Commonwealth Games. All delivered | :06:17. | :06:20.
with style. Edward, you have worked on this for nine years, but from a | :06:21. | :06:25.
different perspective, because you are the match director. You have had | :06:26. | :06:28.
it all to put together, from the cable into the catering and tense. | :06:29. | :06:33.
How has it gone? It has been an incredibly successful first day. At | :06:34. | :06:40.
7am, there were 40,000 people here. This has taken a huge amount of | :06:41. | :06:48.
running bonds only by ourselves. We are very proud today. The atmosphere | :06:49. | :06:55.
was electric. And the legacy should be greater than just for golf. There | :06:56. | :06:59.
should be something more for the people around here and for Scotland. | :07:00. | :07:03.
There is a huge legacy of projects which have in part of the Ryder | :07:04. | :07:13.
Cup. It is a big project and hopefully good for many people in | :07:14. | :07:16.
Scotland. Peter, are the tourists who come to the Ryder Cup in front | :07:17. | :07:19.
from tourists who come during the rest of the year? I think they come | :07:20. | :07:27.
to Scotland to have a good time. And many of these people will see other | :07:28. | :07:32.
parts of Scotland as well. Many are experiencing it for the first time. | :07:33. | :07:37.
You are also director of a big whiskey company. Whiskey and tourism | :07:38. | :07:43.
are two major things for the Scottish economy. Do they go | :07:44. | :07:50.
hand-in-hand? Absolutely. Takings are well up on previous years and | :07:51. | :07:56.
they are closely tied together. Gentlemen, we may have seen the end | :07:57. | :07:59.
of our Indian summer, but the weather has been kind. A very | :08:00. | :08:02.
successful first pay. Thank you very much. | :08:03. | :08:06.
And of course, we'll be back later with full analysis of day one. | :08:07. | :08:10.
David Currie will have that and a look at Stephen Gallacher's | :08:11. | :08:12.
The family of an Edinburgh man who was shot and wounded | :08:13. | :08:21.
while being held in a Pakistan prison say they'll hold David | :08:22. | :08:23.
Mohammad Asghar was sentenced to death in January, | :08:24. | :08:29.
He's now recovering in hospital after being shot, allegedly, by a | :08:30. | :08:35.
His daughter says he should be returned home to Scotland, | :08:36. | :08:40.
Appearing publicly for the first time, for Mohammad Asghar's family, | :08:41. | :08:55.
this has been a difficult week in a long ordeal. This is our worst | :08:56. | :09:06.
nightmare come true. Ever since news of the sentence reached us in | :09:07. | :09:10.
January, we have spent every day fearing for his safety. Those fears | :09:11. | :09:15.
were realised yesterday at this prison, when the grandfather of nine | :09:16. | :09:20.
was shot, allegedly by a police officer. He is being treated in | :09:21. | :09:24.
hospital amid heavy security. Mohammad Asghar, who is diagnosed | :09:25. | :09:28.
with paranoid schizophrenia, was accused of blasphemy in 2010 after | :09:29. | :09:32.
apparently claiming to be a prophet. He was convicted and sentenced to | :09:33. | :09:36.
death in January. But his illness was not taken into account. | :09:37. | :09:40.
Officials say they will look again at his case. The documents show that | :09:41. | :09:47.
he is of unsound mind and he was under treatment. If we see all these | :09:48. | :09:56.
things, then Pakistani law says those of unsound mind cannot be | :09:57. | :09:59.
convicted. Here, a Foreign Office spokesman says they cannot intervene | :10:00. | :10:04.
in another country's judicial system, but added that they had | :10:05. | :10:07.
raised concerns with the local authorities. That is no longer good | :10:08. | :10:12.
enough. We expect David Cameron is in parliament today, talking about | :10:13. | :10:15.
the plight of people within the Middle East. We expect him to take | :10:16. | :10:19.
charge of the situation and the do something about Mohammad Asghar, and | :10:20. | :10:24.
British citizen, who is likely to die. To date, nothing has been done. | :10:25. | :10:30.
Blasphemy laws in Pakistan are sensitive subject. People have been | :10:31. | :10:33.
killed in the past for intervening in such cases. At Mohammad Asghar's | :10:34. | :10:39.
family are now heading for help. We will do whatever it takes to bring | :10:40. | :10:44.
him back. He is innocent. He is ill. He has not done the things he has | :10:45. | :10:48.
been accused of. A police officer has already appeared in court in | :10:49. | :10:51.
connection with the shooting. He was remanded in custody and will appear | :10:52. | :10:52.
again in court next week. MPs have paid tribute to | :10:53. | :10:56.
David Haines, the Perth aid worker murdered by fighters from the | :10:57. | :10:58.
so-called Islamic State. The move came | :10:59. | :11:00.
as the Commons debated whether to During the debate, | :11:01. | :11:04.
the SNP group at Westminster said it The party's Westminster leader, | :11:05. | :11:08.
Angus Robertson, said they would vote against the motion, which was | :11:09. | :11:13.
later overwhelmingly passed. Pete Wishart, the SNP's MP for Perth | :11:14. | :11:18.
where David Haines came from, described the aid worker as | :11:19. | :11:21.
a hero to the people of the city. He was simply a hero. The more we | :11:22. | :11:35.
find out about his remarkable life, the more we are appalled by the | :11:36. | :11:39.
means of his brutal murder. The people of Perth are planning a | :11:40. | :11:43.
commemoration to celebrate his life. I'm sure the leader of the | :11:44. | :11:45.
opposition and the Prime Minister will want to join them in their | :11:46. | :11:50.
efforts to make sure this man is remembered. | :11:51. | :11:53.
A Dreamliner aircraft operated by the Polish airline, LOT, | :11:54. | :11:55.
made an emergency landing at Glasgow airport today. | :11:56. | :11:57.
The pilot requested permission to land, after | :11:58. | :11:58.
The flight, with 260 people on board, was en route from Chicago | :11:59. | :12:03.
to Warsaw, but an airline spokesman said no smoke damage or fire was | :12:04. | :12:06.
found when the plane was examined, and that a faulty fire protection | :12:07. | :12:10.
The Scottish Government is calling for powers to control fracking to | :12:11. | :12:16.
It comes after UK ministers said they would | :12:17. | :12:20.
allow companies to drill for gas and oil below people's land without | :12:21. | :12:30.
their permission at depths of more than 300 metres. | :12:31. | :12:32.
In a UK Government consultation, there was strong opposition to | :12:33. | :12:34.
the plans, as Alexandra Mackenzie reports. | :12:35. | :12:38.
The process of fracking would happen so far underground that there would | :12:39. | :12:46.
be little evidence on the landscape. But although it is unseen, it is | :12:47. | :12:51.
controversial. More than 40,000 people in the UK were asked if they | :12:52. | :12:54.
would agree to companies drilling underneath their homes. 99% said | :12:55. | :13:02.
no. We think this issue would be better handled if it was under the | :13:03. | :13:04.
responsibility of the Scottish Parliament, who would be able to | :13:05. | :13:10.
take into account the views of the people of Scotland and operate on an | :13:11. | :13:14.
evidence led basis which has been disregarded by the UK Government. | :13:15. | :13:18.
Fracking the shale gas or oil involves drilling down and then | :13:19. | :13:22.
horizontally, often for more than a mile, to reach shale rock. Water and | :13:23. | :13:26.
chemicals are pumped in at high pressure to release the gas or oil. | :13:27. | :13:31.
No fracking has taken place in Scotland. The blue represents where | :13:32. | :13:38.
there may be shale or gas. Companies have shown an interest in drilling | :13:39. | :13:43.
here. The large shaded area is where a licence could be applied for. | :13:44. | :13:48.
Across the UK, some have long campaigned against fracking. There | :13:49. | :13:54.
is all kinds of evidence emerging from the US and Australia, where the | :13:55. | :14:01.
industry is more developed, about potentially serious public health | :14:02. | :14:03.
impacts and local environmental impact. The UK Government says all | :14:04. | :14:08.
decisions on whether to grant planning and permitting consent for | :14:09. | :14:13.
shale development in Scotland remain with Scottish planning authorities | :14:14. | :14:19.
and regulators. The Scottish Government says fracking should be | :14:20. | :14:23.
included in future discussions about additional powers for Scotland to | :14:24. | :14:26.
give people a voice. The UK Government says this is misleading, | :14:27. | :14:31.
and Holyrood already have the powers to block any fracking application. | :14:32. | :14:35.
Up to ten primary schools and one secondary could be closed in Moray, | :14:36. | :14:38.
under plans unveiled by the local council. The authority wants to | :14:39. | :14:47.
spend ?70 million upgrading schools across the region, | :14:48. | :14:49.
but it says closures are inevitable. Parents say they'll fight the plans, | :14:50. | :14:52.
Moray Council grappling with the problem common to many local | :14:53. | :15:04.
authorities, have to offer 21st century education in sometimes | :15:05. | :15:07.
19th-century buildings. The authorities embarked on a review of | :15:08. | :15:10.
its school estate and after a year-long study consultants have | :15:11. | :15:15.
recommended a series of and mergers. We have to have a proper debate | :15:16. | :15:20.
about this and decide, even though they may be hard decisions, we need | :15:21. | :15:25.
to make decisions for the next 50 years. But the spectre of school | :15:26. | :15:29.
closures is guaranteed to galvanise parents, especially if it means | :15:30. | :15:33.
children have to travel several miles to a new, larger school. | :15:34. | :15:40.
Closing a school bus thousands of pupils over the next 40 years | :15:41. | :15:47.
halfway across a county in order that a few pupils get the broadest | :15:48. | :15:52.
spectrum of opportunity does seem strange. But the authority argues | :15:53. | :15:57.
that it is the educational experience for the area's young | :15:58. | :16:01.
people that is at the root of its plans. This is a child-centred | :16:02. | :16:06.
approach. It is time we stopped focusing on places, towns and | :16:07. | :16:11.
villages, and we focused on educational provision for children. | :16:12. | :16:17.
Moray Council has pledged to spend ?70 million bringing its schools up | :16:18. | :16:21.
to scratch. It will take a final decision on the proposals in | :16:22. | :16:22.
January. The 16th Wigtown Book festival | :16:23. | :16:28.
gets underway today, in Dumfries and Galloway, with many | :16:29. | :16:31.
well known names featuring. Authors from the world | :16:32. | :16:33.
of broadcasting include Kirsty Wark, Kate Adie and | :16:34. | :16:35.
Clare Balding, as well as Prince The theatre director Jonathan Millar | :16:36. | :16:37.
and champion cyclist Graeme Obree are also appearing over | :16:38. | :16:41.
the next ten days. For me, a great festival is not just | :16:42. | :16:55.
about big names. I like the busyness in the streets. We have a group of | :16:56. | :17:02.
artists journeying from Dumfries with horses and carts and crossing | :17:03. | :17:06.
the river in boats. We have art on the streets. We have surprised it | :17:07. | :17:10.
taking place in book shops. I like the surprises behind every corner. | :17:11. | :17:13.
Let's go back to Gleneagles for today's big story: | :17:14. | :17:16.
the first day's play in golf's Ryder Cup. | :17:17. | :17:20.
Our sports presenter David Currie is there - David, what's it been | :17:21. | :17:22.
With the purple shades of evening falling here at Gleneagles after a | :17:23. | :17:35.
glorious day of golf in the opening day of the Ryder Cup, I continue the | :17:36. | :17:42.
score is Europe, five, the United States, three. And here we just | :17:43. | :17:46.
three of a day one is our reporter. 7.30, and the gladiators enter the | :17:47. | :17:59.
arena. The cream of Europe, against the best of America. Gleneagles | :18:00. | :18:03.
waited to welcome them. We did not come over here to lose! I think we | :18:04. | :18:08.
will do it. I expect the Europeans to win. And the nerves even got to | :18:09. | :18:20.
the starter. Bubba Robson! It will be Webb Simpson. The first ball | :18:21. | :18:26.
hit, battle could commence. The early signs for Europe were | :18:27. | :18:35.
encouraging. Especially with Sergio Garcia in this kind of form. | :18:36. | :18:40.
Europe's first point came from Justin Rose and Henrik Stenson, who | :18:41. | :18:46.
comfortably beat other Watson. But the Americans went into the | :18:47. | :18:51.
afternoon with a lead. In foursomes, you play alternate shots | :18:52. | :18:55.
with the same ball, so Rory McIlroy was left to deal with Garcia. Even | :18:56. | :19:02.
with extraterrestrial help, that war was never found. Garcia made amends | :19:03. | :19:05.
later as Europe gathered some nice momentum. With the likes of Jamie | :19:06. | :19:13.
Donaldson and Rory McIlroy helping them into a two point lead over | :19:14. | :19:18.
America at the end of a dramatic and noisy first day. | :19:19. | :19:24.
There was just one Scot in the European team. | :19:25. | :19:35.
Today was the day. Stephen Gallacher finally realising his Ryder Cup | :19:36. | :19:44.
ambition. Alongside him, Ian Poulter, a hero of previous matches. | :19:45. | :19:51.
And the Bathgate man was not without support. | :19:52. | :20:05.
So Stephen Gallacher's Ryder Cup is now underway. What lies ahead for | :20:06. | :20:12.
the Scot? He is from Bathgate, so we are supporting him. A bit nervous | :20:13. | :20:19.
for him. I hope he does well. Early on, Gallaher was finding it hard to | :20:20. | :20:26.
settle. That is way off line. And when the chances did not present | :20:27. | :20:29.
themselves, the Scot could not capitalise. If it was frustrating | :20:30. | :20:36.
for the galleries, spare a thought for mum and dad. He is a fighter. He | :20:37. | :20:43.
will just keep going. You can never tell what will happen in this game. | :20:44. | :20:46.
What is it like for mum, watching this? I am just as anxious! We don't | :20:47. | :20:58.
want to see him get beaten. In the end, the Americans sealed an | :20:59. | :21:04.
emphatic victory. Not the wider cup start Stephen Gallacher had dreams | :21:05. | :21:10.
of. I was a bit out of rhythm. I did not feel under pressure. I was | :21:11. | :21:16.
really looking forward to it, and it did not pan out. When I did start to | :21:17. | :21:21.
play well, I never capitalised on it. Not the best day for Stephen | :21:22. | :21:29.
Gallacher. He and Ian Poulter will want to make amends tomorrow. | :21:30. | :21:36.
Well, he is a busy man. Our reporter joins me now. A disappointing start | :21:37. | :21:40.
for Stephen Gallacher mobot given the context of the score after day | :21:41. | :21:43.
one, it doesn't matter much, does it? Try telling Stephen Gallacher | :21:44. | :21:48.
that it does not matter. I think this morning, we saw was just the | :21:49. | :21:53.
Ryder Cup and what it can do. And it does not just do that to a rocky | :21:54. | :21:58.
like Stephen Gallacher. Look at Ian Poulter. He had a really bad debut | :21:59. | :22:03.
in 2004. He went on to have not a bad few years in the Ryder Cup | :22:04. | :22:07.
team. So if Stephen Gallacher is picked for tomorrow, he will be | :22:08. | :22:13.
coming back to show that it was right to give him a wild card. Is he | :22:14. | :22:19.
likely to play tomorrow? Forget my opinion, I am busy clicking refresh. | :22:20. | :22:25.
I'm trying to get the captain's pics, we'll trilby announced any | :22:26. | :22:28.
moment now. Will he be picked tomorrow? I think it is more likely | :22:29. | :22:32.
that he's picked for the foursomes in the afternoon. -- for the four | :22:33. | :22:41.
balls than for the foursomes. The foursomes are more tricky and are | :22:42. | :22:45.
for experienced players. Europe trailed two and a half after the | :22:46. | :22:50.
morning matches. I was beginning to think maybe they are not justifying | :22:51. | :22:53.
their tags as favourites, and then they rallied around and lead by 5-3. | :22:54. | :22:58.
Do you still see Europe as having the edge? What have I told you all | :22:59. | :23:01.
these years was Mac in this event, there is nothing like the Ryder | :23:02. | :23:08.
Cup. This afternoon, Europe won three and a half, so they take the | :23:09. | :23:15.
5-3 lead. As far as Europe are concerned, we saw them justifying | :23:16. | :23:19.
their tag of favourites. If they go in and win tomorrow morning's | :23:20. | :23:24.
session, there will establish a huge lead but even at this stage might be | :23:25. | :23:29.
too much for the Americans. Who in your opinion has been the star of | :23:30. | :23:35.
the show so far? I think the stars so far were two rookies who beat Ian | :23:36. | :23:40.
Poulter and Stephen Gallacher, Jordan speaks and Patrick Bean. Not | :23:41. | :23:44.
only did they beat the home favourite and Europe's Mr Ryder Cup, | :23:45. | :23:52.
but they won on their debut. Thanks very much. Phil will be here at | :23:53. | :23:56.
Gleneagles rights to the very end of the Ryder Cup this year. That is it | :23:57. | :23:58.
from me. We had a fine day in Gleneagles and | :23:59. | :24:11.
all across central and southern parts of the country, a fine and to | :24:12. | :24:20.
the day. We have clear spells developing across central and | :24:21. | :24:24.
southern areas. It was a blustery day today, with strong winds across | :24:25. | :24:31.
the north. But the winds will ease as we had through the night. -- as | :24:32. | :24:42.
we head through the night. It is a chilly start to the day tomorrow. | :24:43. | :24:48.
Some cloud for Dumfries and Galloway. Looking drier and brighter | :24:49. | :24:57.
here. We are looking at strong winds continuing here as well. Variable | :24:58. | :25:08.
amounts of cloud. The north-east has the best of the brightness once | :25:09. | :25:14.
again. The far north-east has more in the way of cloud. And the wind is | :25:15. | :25:18.
still strong across the Northern Isles, but not as strong as it was | :25:19. | :25:24.
today. It is strong across the north-west Highlands tomorrow. 50 | :25:25. | :25:28.
mph gust at some level, rain is likely to at times. The winds will | :25:29. | :25:35.
be a touch lighter than they are further towards the north up towards | :25:36. | :25:39.
the east, sunny intervals. There will be chilly conditions at the | :25:40. | :25:46.
summit level, especially for the Cairngorms. Towards the south-east, | :25:47. | :25:52.
a little lighter. At the, we are looking at force four wins -- force | :25:53. | :26:03.
four winds. It will be force four for much of the day, but a slight to | :26:04. | :26:11.
moderate the state. It was blustery at Gleneagles. For the rest of the | :26:12. | :26:14.
weekend, we are looking at right conditions tomorrow. The wind will | :26:15. | :26:19.
continue to ease as we get to the end of the weekend. Cloudy | :26:20. | :26:23.
conditions on Sunday, with the winds around the same. On Saturday night | :26:24. | :26:28.
in the Sunday, there will be rain for the north-west corner and that | :26:29. | :26:33.
will still be around on Sunday. Elsewhere, largely dry, and a bit | :26:34. | :26:35.
warmer. Now, a reminder | :26:36. | :26:48.
of tonight's main news. The Ryder Cup at Gleneagles | :26:49. | :26:50.
in Perthshire is finally underway. The Prime Minister said it's vital | :26:51. | :26:53.
to take on what he called the 'clear and present threat' of Islamic | :26:54. | :26:56.
State, describing its fighters will take years, but it won't | :26:57. | :26:58.
involve British ground troops. The Ryder Cup at Gleneagles | :26:59. | :27:04.
in Perthshire is finally underway. After years of planning, and tens | :27:05. | :27:07.
of millions spent on preparing the course and facilities, the three-day | :27:08. | :27:09.
match between Europe and the United Europe are in the lead overnight by | :27:10. | :27:13.
five points to three. I'll be back with the headlines | :27:14. | :27:25.
at eight and the late bulletin just Until then, from everyone | :27:26. | :27:34.
on the team - right across the | :27:35. | :27:37. |
