That's all from the BBC News at Six, so it's goodbye from me,

:00:00.:00:00.

and on BBC One we now join the BBC's news teams where you are.

:00:00.:00:00.

Tonight, on Reporting Scotland - the Forth Road Bridge reopens

:00:00.:00:08.

But lorries will still have to go the long way round.

:00:09.:00:20.

Join me live at the bridge, where there is plenty of festive cheer

:00:21.:00:26.

after it opened first thing this morning.

:00:27.:00:28.

A court rules that government plans for minimum

:00:29.:00:37.

prices for alcohol MAY breach European law.

:00:38.:00:38.

Planes, trains and automobiles - the Christmas getaway

:00:39.:00:41.

The Hoff claims to be a Partick Thistle Fan -

:00:42.:00:44.

so what happened when he met team mascot Kingsley?

:00:45.:00:47.

And meet Dancer the reindeer, who has taken some time out

:00:48.:00:49.

250 scaffolders, 46 welders, 76 engineers and inspectors -

:00:50.:01:10.

the workers that enabled the early re-opening of the Forth Road Bridge.

:01:11.:01:14.

Traffic flowed well on the crossing today, following a closure that has

:01:15.:01:16.

While the steelwork repairs are complete, lorry drivers

:01:17.:01:23.

will have to wait until the middle of February until they can use

:01:24.:01:26.

Our reporter Lisa Summers is at the bridge control centre

:01:27.:01:31.

It is getting very gusty here. But a huge amount of work has gone on here

:01:32.:01:46.

over the past few weeks to make sure that this bridge could open as

:01:47.:01:51.

quickly as possible. So it is a very pleasing sight for most of the

:01:52.:01:54.

regular traffic which uses it to see it up and running this evening, 12

:01:55.:01:56.

days ahead of schedule. 5:20am, and the Forth Road Bridge

:01:57.:02:03.

was back in action. Vans, cars, buses and bikes

:02:04.:02:06.

make 90% of users. They had a clear run

:02:07.:02:09.

across the water. It is nice to stretch your legs

:02:10.:02:11.

and get back in the swing of things. It's even been too busy

:02:12.:02:16.

to get the bike on. From paying nothing to the best part

:02:17.:02:22.

of ?15 a day has been It will be another six weeks before

:02:23.:02:47.

lorries can cross. Police officers were out to make sure they obeyed

:02:48.:02:51.

the restriction. The industry claims the prolonged closure will cost them

:02:52.:02:54.

?40 million, affecting businesses right across the country. We were

:02:55.:02:59.

very disappointed yesterday to hear the minister announcing that the

:03:00.:03:03.

bridge would reopen but not for HGVs. It is a kick in the stomach

:03:04.:03:06.

for us now because we had expected to be like, road by the start of

:03:07.:03:10.

January. Things appeared to be going well. The traffic actually has been

:03:11.:03:16.

very light. We have not had any queues, any difficulties on the

:03:17.:03:19.

network at all this morning. We are glad to see the cars using the

:03:20.:03:26.

bridge again. On both sides of the Forth, they will now begin to count

:03:27.:03:30.

the cost of the disruption. It has not been an easy year for Fife. It

:03:31.:03:36.

has added to the timescales and added to uncertainty. There is some

:03:37.:03:39.

worry that this might have a long-term effect on some customers.

:03:40.:03:43.

Looking out across the water, it seems for many there will indeed be

:03:44.:03:48.

a very Merry Christmas. The Scottish Government says it has set up a

:03:49.:03:54.

helpline for hauliers and it is trying to keep the diversion routes

:03:55.:03:58.

as clear as possible. But any talk of compensation will be ongoing. For

:03:59.:04:03.

small businesses, it is back to business as usual. Stephen Gordon

:04:04.:04:07.

was up at the crack of dawn this morning to join a butcher based in

:04:08.:04:11.

Fife as it made its deliveries back into the capital. Succes, Claire

:04:12.:04:18.

Mitchell and her husband, packing up the orders for a trip to market. The

:04:19.:04:23.

family have been farming in West Fife for generations. But for the

:04:24.:04:27.

last three weeks their butchery business has faced an entirely new

:04:28.:04:32.

problem - the closure of the Forth Road Bridge. This morning at last

:04:33.:04:37.

they could avoid the long way round. It feels quite a big relief. It is

:04:38.:04:41.

lovely not to have to drive all the way around and Zhou and find

:04:42.:04:48.

alternate routes. It has added a lot of time onto the journey to

:04:49.:04:52.

Edinburgh. So this is lovely, very exciting actually. Shortly before

:04:53.:04:55.

seven o'clock, on to the bridge, passing under the north tower and

:04:56.:05:00.

the repaired steel truss a few metres below. It is a bit blowy but

:05:01.:05:08.

hopefully we are safe. Which after all was why the bridge was closed in

:05:09.:05:12.

the first place. Now it is reopened, there is a bit more time to consider

:05:13.:05:17.

pre-Christmas consequences. It is such a busy time of year. We really

:05:18.:05:22.

need to be back at the farm doing the production rather than spending

:05:23.:05:30.

hours out-driving and delivering. Arriving in Edinburgh, she sets up a

:05:31.:05:33.

stall for one final day of trading before the festive shutdown. With

:05:34.:05:38.

the capital a bridge too far for many until today, there have been

:05:39.:05:42.

upsides. A captive market has meant local Fife trade has been booming.

:05:43.:05:47.

When you have a challenge, at the beginning you think it is

:05:48.:05:50.

insurmountable, but after awhile you of ways around it. It makes you

:05:51.:05:56.

realise that lots of things can be coped with. You just have to deal

:05:57.:06:00.

with it the same as everybody else! Like many others in Fife and beyond,

:06:01.:06:04.

this business will take stock of the bridge closure and hope the worst is

:06:05.:06:14.

now behind them. But of course this is not quite the end of the story.

:06:15.:06:18.

There is still some work to be done on the bridge in January which might

:06:19.:06:22.

mean some restrictions. And of course that Parliamentary inquiry

:06:23.:06:25.

will get under way to try to establish if anything could been

:06:26.:06:27.

done to stop this closure happening in the first place.

:06:28.:06:45.

The Scottish government and the Scotch Whisky Association

:06:46.:06:47.

have both welcomed today's ruling by the European Court of Justice

:06:48.:06:50.

in a case over the proposed introduction of a minimum

:06:51.:06:53.

The court in Luxembourg said the policy, which the drinks lobby

:06:54.:06:57.

Ministers say they will continue to argue minimum pricing

:06:58.:06:59.

Our home affairs correspondent Reevel Alderson reports.

:07:00.:07:04.

Scotland has a troubled relationship with alcohol. ?3.6 billion is the

:07:05.:07:11.

estimated annual cost to the NHS. The devilment has proposed a 50p

:07:12.:07:16.

minimum unit price for alcohol to help tackle alcohol misuse.

:07:17.:07:22.

Following a complaint by the Scotch Whisky Association, the European

:07:23.:07:25.

Court of Justice was asked whether this policy contravened European

:07:26.:07:29.

trade laws. Their ruling today is far from definitive. Judges have

:07:30.:07:35.

passed the matter back to the court of session in Edinburgh to determine

:07:36.:07:39.

whether an alternative such as increasing alcohol duty would help

:07:40.:07:43.

cut the problems caused by drink. The Scotch Whisky Association, which

:07:44.:07:46.

brought the case, welcome to the ruling, which it says confirmed

:07:47.:07:49.

minimum unit pricing contravenes free trade laws. It confirms 30

:07:50.:07:57.

years of European case law. It says minimum pricing is a restriction on

:07:58.:08:01.

trade in the EU and therefore it is illegal to choose minimum pricing

:08:02.:08:05.

when there are other less restrictive means available. The

:08:06.:08:08.

Scottish Government also welcome the ruling. Drink taxes are reserved to

:08:09.:08:12.

Westminster. But ministers here say they will seek to persuade Scottish

:08:13.:08:16.

judges that minimum unit pricing targets problem drinkers. Taxation

:08:17.:08:20.

affects Pepsi drinkers and Pepsi drinks in the same way, whereas

:08:21.:08:24.

minimum unit pricing targets of those cheap, strong products which

:08:25.:08:30.

do the most harm. So actually we will argue strongly that it is

:08:31.:08:35.

actually a less restrictive measure. It is more targeted and therefore

:08:36.:08:40.

more effective, we will argue. Health campaigners say alcohol is

:08:41.:08:45.

60% cheaper than it was in 1980 and it is vital that problem drinking

:08:46.:08:48.

and the anti-social behaviour it causes are tackled. We are really

:08:49.:08:53.

disappointed that this court case continues. We have 20 people a week

:08:54.:08:57.

in Scotland dying of alcohol-related causes come and that is avoidable.

:08:58.:09:00.

The best way to reduce those deaths is by getting this cheap, dangerous

:09:01.:09:07.

product off the market. And minimum pricing is a way of doing that.

:09:08.:09:13.

Minimum unit pricing is still a long way off. Once the court of session

:09:14.:09:16.

has delivered its own ruling next year, it is likely the case will be

:09:17.:09:18.

appealed to the UK Supreme Court. The great Christmas holiday

:09:19.:09:26.

getaway is well underway. Today is expected to be the busiest

:09:27.:09:28.

day for festive travellers, though strong winds and heavy

:09:29.:09:31.

seas have been creating At Glasgow bus station today, the

:09:32.:09:44.

Christmas getaway was well under way. We are taking the wee man to

:09:45.:09:52.

Paris for Christmas to go to Disneyland. Almost a week in Paris

:09:53.:09:57.

and we are away back to Aberdeen. I am going up to Inverness on the bus,

:09:58.:10:01.

which will take about four hours, and I am going on from there.

:10:02.:10:07.

Heading up to Inverness, taking four hours, hopefully. But the bus is

:10:08.:10:17.

late at the moment. Travel is also proving to be a massively popular

:10:18.:10:20.

option when it comes to the great festive getaway. Here at Glasgow

:10:21.:10:24.

airport they reckon 15,000 people have been through its terminal

:10:25.:10:28.

building. And that is just today. Many have decided to escape the cold

:10:29.:10:32.

weather, in favour of somewhere warmer. Some of the popular sun

:10:33.:10:38.

spots include Alicante, Gran Canaria, Spain, Dubai. But our

:10:39.:10:44.

domestic services are also very busy, especially the flights to

:10:45.:10:47.

London, Belfast, Manchester, Bristol. There is huge demand for

:10:48.:10:51.

nearly every service which is leaving Glasgow airport over the

:10:52.:10:56.

next day or two. Elsewhere, trains were running normally here at

:10:57.:11:00.

Aberdeen station and at others around Scotland, with no major

:11:01.:11:05.

problems. That is before services start to wind down tomorrow evening

:11:06.:11:08.

before gearing up again on Boxing Day. But it was not good news

:11:09.:11:13.

everywhere. Bad weather caused major problems on the ferries. Passengers

:11:14.:11:18.

of all varieties were turned away from Clyde and Hebridean services,

:11:19.:11:22.

most of which were cancelled or faced disruption. On the roads, a

:11:23.:11:26.

last-minute flurry of Christmas shoppers only caused minor traffic

:11:27.:11:30.

issues. So the message for festive travellers seems to be, so far, so

:11:31.:11:34.

good. Not with warnings of severe weather over the next few days, the

:11:35.:11:38.

public is being urged to be vigilant before travelling.

:11:39.:11:41.

Many secondary school teachers in West Dunbartonshire are set

:11:42.:11:44.

to strike for a day early in the New Year.

:11:45.:11:46.

It is over plans for a shake-up which would cut the number

:11:47.:11:49.

of principal teachers in schools there.

:11:50.:11:51.

The strike by EIS members is scheduled for Tuesday 12th

:11:52.:11:53.

The council says the system it is moving to is similar

:11:54.:11:58.

to the one that already exists in many other areas.

:11:59.:12:01.

A Highland mansion once used for occult rituals has been badly

:12:02.:12:03.

Boleskine House on the shores of Loch Ness was owned in the 19th

:12:04.:12:09.

century by Aleister Crowley, who claimed to have

:12:10.:12:13.

The house was later owned by Led Zeppelin guitarist Jimmy

:12:14.:12:19.

Police are treating the death of a man in Dundee as suspicious.

:12:20.:12:24.

He was found at around three o'clock this morning in a common close

:12:25.:12:27.

He was taken to Ninewells Hospital, but later died.

:12:28.:12:31.

It is just over five months since a flood devastated homes

:12:32.:12:34.

and businesses in the small Perthshire town of Alyth.

:12:35.:12:36.

Some of those affected are still waiting to get

:12:37.:12:41.

Our reporter Andrew Anderson has been back to Alyth to find out how

:12:42.:12:46.

The Christmas lights are hanging above the Alyth burn like they do

:12:47.:12:57.

every year. It was a very different picture back in July. After hours of

:12:58.:13:03.

heavy rain, the burn burst its banks, sending a surge of water

:13:04.:13:07.

through the town. A shocking demonstration of the force of

:13:08.:13:12.

nature. This man and his daughter will not be back in their ground

:13:13.:13:16.

floor flat before Christmas. They lost just about everything in the

:13:17.:13:21.

flood. It was halfway up my door. I could not open the door to get out

:13:22.:13:25.

because if I did, it would all just flood in. So it was really, really

:13:26.:13:31.

scary looking back now, thinking, if I had not woken up, what could have

:13:32.:13:35.

happened? Local businesses like this pooches also suffered as water and

:13:36.:13:39.

mud came in through the door. The shop filled up to about 3ft. How

:13:40.:13:46.

quickly? Within half an hour. The guys in the shop had to go upstairs,

:13:47.:13:51.

they were stranded. Now it is almost back to business as usual. They are

:13:52.:13:54.

hard at work getting the Christmas orders ready. One or two wholesale

:13:55.:13:58.

customers are still closed and will not be open for a while. But you

:13:59.:14:05.

really feel quite moved by the response we have had from people who

:14:06.:14:08.

come and shop with you. There is still flood damage to be repaired in

:14:09.:14:13.

Alyth. Leering up is still going on. When it mattered, this community

:14:14.:14:16.

rallied round to help those made homeless. It was fantastic. The

:14:17.:14:21.

whole community spirit. Also the story of this event, how the

:14:22.:14:26.

community has pulled together and are still supporting one another

:14:27.:14:28.

now. A report into why this burn are still supporting one another

:14:29.:14:32.

burst its banks so spectacularly back in July concluded it was simply

:14:33.:14:36.

down to the amount of rainfall and that such an event should only

:14:37.:14:40.

happen once every 200 years. The people of Alyth will be hoping that

:14:41.:14:45.

that is true and that they can look forward to a drier 2016.

:14:46.:14:49.

Celtic manager Ronny Deila says he should be judged on results

:14:50.:14:55.

Reacting to critics - in the form of some former players,

:14:56.:15:01.

and some fans - Deila says winning all three domestic prizes

:15:02.:15:04.

He adds that he is unconcerned Aberdeen have closed

:15:05.:15:09.

to within a point at the top of the table.

:15:10.:15:17.

Taliban I feel pressure all the time. I've said many times I know

:15:18.:15:25.

why I'm here, to win trophies, and that's what I'm going to do. We have

:15:26.:15:31.

every opportunity to win a lot of the trophies this season.

:15:32.:15:36.

every opportunity to win a lot of certainly lost more goal this is

:15:37.:15:38.

every opportunity to win a lot of season but we've probably lost the

:15:39.:15:41.

ball in bad areas to lose it. There is not a great deal

:15:42.:15:47.

ball in bad areas to lose it. There responsibility and go out and

:15:48.:15:51.

ball in bad areas to lose it. There professional. And professional.

:15:52.:15:53.

She's been heralded by Scottish badminton as Scotland's best

:15:54.:15:55.

Today Imogen Bankier has announced her retirement

:15:56.:15:58.

She medalled at world, European and Commonwealth level,

:15:59.:16:02.

but says it was time to leave badminton before the Rio Olympic

:16:03.:16:04.

Looking back, she remembers the highlights fondly.

:16:05.:16:16.

Winning a medal in Glasgow was the special way to cap off my

:16:17.:16:22.

international career and to make it with Robert, my long-standing

:16:23.:16:26.

partner for such a long time. And winning a silver medal in the World

:16:27.:16:31.

Championships in 2011 was an incredible experience and something

:16:32.:16:35.

I will cherish for the rest of my life. So where do her achievements.

:16:36.:16:41.

Sit within the history of the sport? Without doubt Imogen has been our

:16:42.:16:49.

most successful female athlete ever. It must be said she's been a true

:16:50.:16:54.

inspiration to the next generation of players that are now emerging. We

:16:55.:17:01.

are very sad that she's retiring. Bankier admits disappointment with

:17:02.:17:05.

London 2012, so was she tempted to carry on for Rio? When the

:17:06.:17:10.

qualifications started it seemed quite unobtainable for me to make

:17:11.:17:14.

it. I always knew the last six months or so it wasn't going

:17:15.:17:20.

something I could take part in. So that affected my decision in the

:17:21.:17:23.

end. After retirement there are diverse challenges ahead. Her

:17:24.:17:28.

father, the Celtic chairman, has a business opportunity. I started

:17:29.:17:33.

working for the whisky shop at the beginning of this year. They are

:17:34.:17:38.

going to open a new shop in Paris, so I've been offered the opportunity

:17:39.:17:41.

to go over there. It is completely different, a different world, a

:17:42.:17:44.

different life. It is something I feel I can really get my teeth into.

:17:45.:17:51.

I'm looking forward to ellishing that. Eth

:17:52.:17:53.

I'm looking forward to ellishing that. -- relishing that.

:17:54.:17:56.

The Glasgow and Scotland forward, Rob Harley, is set to miss the 2016

:17:57.:17:59.

He injured his thumb in last weekend's win for Warriors over

:18:00.:18:03.

He's been ruled out for up to three months because of the injury.

:18:04.:18:07.

His Glasgow Warriors head coach, Gregor Townsend, says Harley will be

:18:08.:18:10.

doubly disappointed to miss out, for Scotland, and for Glasgow

:18:11.:18:12.

Obviously a blow for him. He's been if great form. It's a pity he's

:18:13.:18:30.

going be out for two or three months. He knows the timescale for

:18:31.:18:36.

his recovery. Injuries happen to every player. He's cracking jokes in

:18:37.:18:42.

the team meeting yesterday, so he seems in good spirits.

:18:43.:18:45.

We've been visiting Pantoland today in sport.

:18:46.:18:49.

Because Partick Thistle have a new celebrity fan.

:18:50.:18:56.

It's none other than David Hasselhoff, who has been

:18:57.:18:59.

seduced by the mighty Jags during his panto stint in Glasgow.

:19:00.:19:01.

John Barnes, our very own Peter Pan of sport,

:19:02.:19:03.

I'm here at the Clyde auditorium to meet Partick Thistle's latest

:19:04.:19:14.

supporter. Not him, but him. David Hasselhoff. He's Captain Hook. We've

:19:15.:19:21.

got 18 shows left. We've been supporting you guys over there,

:19:22.:19:26.

Partick Thistle. Get some of the toys to support the show. Why

:19:27.:19:31.

Partick Thistle? Because it is like Knight rider. You can make a

:19:32.:19:36.

difference in your own life you can make a difference in somebody else's

:19:37.:19:41.

life. That's what the team is about. It is not playing for a specific

:19:42.:19:45.

city but playing for your honour. To do the best you can. We came over

:19:46.:19:49.

here and they were making a joke about the worst team in the history

:19:50.:19:54.

of the world. If they win the four games in a row, the best record for

:19:55.:19:59.

40 years. That's strange. It is a wonderful thing when you can come

:20:00.:20:02.

over and draw that energy. You are the lucky mascot. You know what, I

:20:03.:20:06.

am. You know so much about Partick Thistle. Who is the manager? Alan

:20:07.:20:11.

Archibald. When did they last win the League Cup? 1971. There we are,

:20:12.:20:19.

definitely a Partick Thistle. They've been around since 1786. I've

:20:20.:20:25.

been around since 1876. Knight Rider was real for me. When I got it I

:20:26.:20:30.

called my dad and said dad, I've got the greatest show in the world. And

:20:31.:20:35.

we are still living in dream. And with that it is back to our own

:20:36.:20:40.

little Tinkerbell in the studio. Well, thank you very much to John

:20:41.:20:48.

and "the Hoff." Have you had the Sportsnight out early or what? We

:20:49.:20:52.

have. Merry Christmas from all of Sport to all of you. Thank you very

:20:53.:20:54.

much. It may be just two sleeps

:20:55.:20:57.

until Christmas, but Santa and his reindeer have taken some

:20:58.:21:00.

time out of their busy schedule to visit children in

joined them too. Everyone needs to eat. And when

:21:08.:21:17.

you're getting ready for a busy night, some relaxing pampering is

:21:18.:21:23.

welcome too. The children also enjoyed a hearty breakfast and a

:21:24.:21:29.

last minute chat with Santa. What would you like for Christmas? An elf

:21:30.:21:35.

A what, an elf? I want an elf. All of this organised by Santa's other

:21:36.:21:39.

help hers, the staff and teachers. They are in a place they love to

:21:40.:21:43.

come to. They are meeting Santa Claus. They are having a present,

:21:44.:21:47.

having a brilliant time here and they are getting to see the

:21:48.:21:52.

reindeer. That's an experience to most children don't get to do.

:21:53.:21:56.

Hopefully today we are creating a lifetime memory. When the time came

:21:57.:22:02.

Santa didn't dependent. Are you excited?

:22:03.:22:07.

ALL: Yes! Gifts specially chosen from the lists the children had

:22:08.:22:13.

written. And when they finally got through the wrapping paper, delight.

:22:14.:22:17.

Thank you. Are you pleased with it? Yes. Has it been a really good

:22:18.:22:26.

party? Yes. I like to take a photo of the reindeer. And get my presents

:22:27.:22:37.

and got Santa some presents. I'm getting toys. And the reindeer. Some

:22:38.:22:43.

time to get acquainted with their new toys. Mums and dads too give a

:22:44.:22:48.

bag of Christmas treats. They've put a wonderful day on for the kids and

:22:49.:22:52.

the kids have been looking forward to it. That's all they've been

:22:53.:22:56.

speaking about all week, breakfast with Santa. Something different for

:22:57.:23:00.

the kids as well. As Santa and his reindeer prepare to get back to

:23:01.:23:04.

work, just time for one final message.

:23:05.:23:08.

ALL: Merry Christmas! APPLAUSE.

:23:09.:23:18.

We've got the wise man of weather with us. What have you got for us? A

:23:19.:23:25.

bit of everything. Turning wet and windy overnight but for many it was

a reasonably windy overnight but for many it was

a reasonably calm start. But turning stormy. We do have a couple of Met

and the amount of wind we are likely to see, courtesy of Eva, our

fifth-named storm. Really it is giving a glancing blow to Scotland.

:23:45.:23:47.

However, the trailing weather front will give a spell of very heavy rain

overnight. The tightly packed isobars, pretty high winds. Let's

:23:54.:23:57.

look at the chart. You can see, if my graphics move on. Oh, we can't.

:23:58.:24:03.

It is going to be a wet and windy night, with showers crossing the

:24:04.:24:08.

country. Winds gusting to 70 miles an hour for a time around Skyk, the

:24:09.:24:12.

north-west coast and the Western Isles. Those high winds transferring

:24:13.:24:15.

to the Northern Isles first thing tomorrow. A lot of rain around. We

:24:16.:24:21.

have warnings for parts of Argyll, Dumfries and Galloway, and the

:24:22.:24:25.

Borders. Going into tomorrow, it's a wet and windy start, but as we head

:24:26.:24:32.

through the day the winds will ease down the mainland but remain high in

:24:33.:24:35.

the north-west coast, the western and Northern Isles throughout the

:24:36.:24:38.

day. We are likely to see disruption on the ferries and bridges as a

:24:39.:24:42.

result. For most of the mainland, a blustery day with sunshine. Showers

:24:43.:24:45.

rattling through. You will see sunshine but the showers keep on

:24:46.:24:50.

coming. A cool feel towards the middle of the afternoon.

:24:51.:24:54.

Temperatures at 3 o'clock, 4 or 5 Celsius. As we head through

:24:55.:25:01.

Christmas eve night everything comes a down. Christmas Day, the winds are

:25:02.:25:05.

much lighter and much drier weather around as well. Spells of sunshine,

:25:06.:25:11.

a few showers in the north-west of the country through the high.ds

:25:12.:25:16.

those could be wintry, the odd flake or two. For most, it will be rain.

:25:17.:25:22.

Christmas night, some heavy rain arriving from the south, marching

:25:23.:25:26.

northwards as we head into Boxing Day. That rain will be quite he. A

:25:27.:25:35.

further warning across parts of the borders and Dumfriesshire,

:25:36.:25:37.

potentially localised flooding. Boxing Day wet and turning wired.
