The organisers of Edinburgh's Hogmanay celebrations say the build

up to this year's event has been challenging,

the tens of thousands of partygoers will be entertained and kept safe.

The recent terror attacks in Paris highlighted security concerns,

but the man in charge of policing the event says people should be

Fireworks to welcome the New Year. The centrepiece of Edinburgh's

Hogmanay celebrations. This afternoon, high up on the castle

ramparts, two and a half tonnes of explosives are being prepared for

this year's five minute display. The sad thing comes at the end there

because after the fireworks are blown away, you have this massive

roar from the street and it hits you. It is the most amazing feeling

and they are down having a brilliant time and have loved what you have

done. At street level, many hands are needed to put together an event

that in the space of many decades has gone global. Scotland's biggest

Hogmanay event is now a three-day festival. It is a big projects.

There is probably 150 to 200,000 people in the city here for the

things we are putting on. The build-up to this event has been set

against a challenging backdrop. The Forth Road which was closed at a

time when many were making their plans were Hogmanay and there is the

ongoing is concern about consumer -- ongoing concern about security.

Officers here are offering firm reassurance. In the context of what

has happened over recent months, my messages be vigilant but don't be

alarmed. I am confident that in terms of Edinburgh's Hogmanay, we

have put in the contingency plan so people can come here and have a

fantastic time but enjoy themselves safely. With the forecasters

predicting relatively good conditions, it appears they can do

so without worrying too much about the weather.

Police have begun a murder investigation into the death of one

The body of 53-year-old Martin Hamilton,

who was nick-named the Blackhill Butcher,

was found in woods near West Calder, on the 17th of December.

A post mortem examination has shown he suffered serious injuries,

which are believed to have led to his death.

Hamilton had a string of convictions for drug dealing and violence.

Two paddle-boarders were rescued by helicopter after getting

into difficulty in the Firth of Forth off

Kinghorn Lifeboat and a Royal Navy helicopter from Prestwick

were called out to search for the two women, believed to be

in their 50s, when they raised the alarm from a mobile phone.

They were winched to safety and airlifted to hospital

to make time to give blood as well. My wife had to have quite a lot of

blood when she had cancer. I come in four times a year. I thought I am

going into Glasgow anyway, have a cuppa tea and go back down the road.

The number of former members of the armed forces seeking the help

of Citizens Advice has been rising steadily.

In conjunction with the charity Poppy Scotland, it's helped around

7,000 ex-service personnel over the past five years.

Many of them struggled with homelessness and accessing

benefits and didn't know where to get help.

It was stressful and very worrying. Like I say, I have my family to

think of. If I had to sleep down the street in a tent on the corner of

the road, I would do it but I wouldn't expect my family to do

that. Police are looking for a woman who

has gone missing with her children. Officers urge anyone with her
