People try to clean up and count the cost of Storm Frank. | :00:00. | :00:13.
Homes across the country have been damaged | :00:14. | :00:14.
It is probably here at the Ballater caravan park where the full extent | :00:15. | :00:27.
of the havoc caused by Storm Frank can be found. Hardly a caravan, | :00:28. | :00:32.
whether residential or a holiday home, has been left not damaged. | :00:33. | :00:36.
Others have been swept down the river deed. -- River Dee. | :00:37. | :00:43.
on the brink of collapse into the swollen River Dee. | :00:44. | :00:47.
A railway bridge damaged by Storm Frank means | :00:48. | :00:49.
the West Coast Line will be closed until February. | :00:50. | :00:51.
We'll hear from our reporters across the country. | :00:52. | :00:53.
Also tonight - diagnosed with motor neurone disease. | :00:54. | :00:55.
18 months on Gordon Aikman is campaigning for better patient care. | :00:56. | :01:01.
Gary Anderson is - once again - crowned world champion. | :01:02. | :01:19.
High winds and heavy rain are continuing across the east | :01:20. | :01:23.
and north east of Scotland hampering efforts to repair the damage caused | :01:24. | :01:27.
There are still dozens of flood warnings in place and many roads | :01:28. | :01:33.
We have a series of reports from across the country but first | :01:34. | :01:43.
This is a small example of devastation, the only word for it, | :01:44. | :01:55.
caused in Ballater last Wednesday when the river burst its banks and | :01:56. | :01:59.
swept through the town. Not far from here, street after street in | :02:00. | :02:04.
darkness. People have had to be moved elsewhere. The pavement, | :02:05. | :02:10.
sodden carpets and sofas, washing machines and fridges that cannot be | :02:11. | :02:14.
used, having to be taken away because they are no longer any use | :02:15. | :02:19.
to anyone. Today, after three days of heavy and persistent rain, there | :02:20. | :02:24.
was concern the River Dee would do more damage. There have been | :02:25. | :02:28.
problems but it has not been as bad as some feared. | :02:29. | :02:30.
A common scene on street after street in Ballater, the effect of | :02:31. | :02:39.
last Wednesday's flood being felt. Residents emptying homes of sodden | :02:40. | :02:46.
possessions. Water levels on the River Dee were high today after | :02:47. | :02:50.
three days of heavy rain but nowhere near the conditions that caused | :02:51. | :02:53.
devastation last week will stop nearby a local burn burst its banks. | :02:54. | :03:02.
Help is at hand for home owners. Residents of two care homes were | :03:03. | :03:05.
forced to leave. We have flooding coming from a different direction | :03:06. | :03:10.
from the previous flooding. We have been involved in evacuating an old | :03:11. | :03:16.
person's residential flats. Approximately 45 people evacuated | :03:17. | :03:21.
there. We have been involved in evacuating this area. The water is | :03:22. | :03:27.
rising six inches every hour. Back in Ballater, the clear up continued. | :03:28. | :03:35.
It is probably at the caravan park where the full extent of the havoc | :03:36. | :03:42.
caused by Storm Frank can be found. Hardly a caravan, whether | :03:43. | :03:45.
residential or a holiday home, has been left not damaged. Others have | :03:46. | :03:52.
been swept down the River Dee. We have managed to salvage some stuff. | :03:53. | :03:57.
Some people on that side, it has totally gone down the river and they | :03:58. | :04:01.
have lost everything. It is a disaster? Exactly, yes. I do not | :04:02. | :04:07.
know if they will rebuild the site. There is the potential for it to | :04:08. | :04:12.
happen again. In the outskirts of Aberdeen, this caravan park flooded | :04:13. | :04:18.
a second time in a week. Thankfully residents had been moved out. Built | :04:19. | :04:23.
in the 16th century to be impregnable, Abergeldie Castle near | :04:24. | :04:27.
Balmoral looking vulnerable. The banks of the River Dee swept away. | :04:28. | :04:34.
The Laird of Abergeldie is one of those who had to be rehoused. | :04:35. | :04:38.
Deeside has been left reeling by the flooding. It has become difficult | :04:39. | :04:44.
for people to recover because of the rain and difficult to assess damage | :04:45. | :04:48.
because of the high river levels. There has been a community effort | :04:49. | :04:53.
with voluntary groups set up to help those affected. Centres have been | :04:54. | :04:59.
set up so that people can come and get essentials. As far as the | :05:00. | :05:05.
weather prospects, the amber warnings that had been in place for | :05:06. | :05:09.
the north-east of Scotland, remained until midnight. They are replaced by | :05:10. | :05:14.
lesser yellow warnings after midnight, but people are urged to be | :05:15. | :05:17.
vigilant and to think about whether they need to travel. | :05:18. | :05:24.
Well you saw those striking images of | :05:25. | :05:25.
of Abergeldie Castle, which looks in danger of slipping | :05:26. | :05:27.
Our correspondent Lorna Gordon is there tonight. | :05:28. | :05:30.
Abergeldie Castle has stood here in Royal Deeside for hundreds of years, | :05:31. | :05:46.
but not perhaps for much longer. It is a visible sign of how much damage | :05:47. | :05:53.
swollen rivers like the River Dee can cause. A huge swathe of the | :05:54. | :05:59.
river bank was sized away during Storm Frank. -- taken away. Now the | :06:00. | :06:10.
castle a few feet perhaps from the river itself. It is in danger of | :06:11. | :06:15.
collapsing into the water. I am told engineers have been in to assess it. | :06:16. | :06:19.
It is not clear as yet what can be done to save it. Baron Abergeldie | :06:20. | :06:27.
left the property very reluctantly, I am told. I am told he is too | :06:28. | :06:34.
distressed tonight to speak. It is tonight in a precarious situation, | :06:35. | :06:40.
this 16th century castle in danger of slipping into the River Dee. | :06:41. | :06:43.
The nearby village of Braemar has been virtually cut off | :06:44. | :06:45.
Our reporter Andrew Anderson managed to get there this morning and has | :06:46. | :06:50.
been finding out how residents are coping. | :06:51. | :06:56.
The rain continues to fall in Braemar today. Torrents of water | :06:57. | :07:03.
continue to come down the rivers. This village is virtually cut off to | :07:04. | :07:08.
the outside world, certainly to vehicles. We are told the a 93 is | :07:09. | :07:15.
close to the south but the main problem is the bridge that carries | :07:16. | :07:20.
that road out of the village to Aberdeen. One part of the bridge | :07:21. | :07:24.
damaged by the force of the water coming down the River Dee. We are | :07:25. | :07:28.
now thinking the coming down the River Dee. We are | :07:29. | :07:32.
on the River Dee and we can start to mobilise and get temporary works in | :07:33. | :07:38.
and we will be working as fast as we can to get the bridge repaired. | :07:39. | :07:44.
There are power cuts also in Braemar at the weekend but the main worry | :07:45. | :07:49.
was when telephone lines went down. Satellite communications were put in | :07:50. | :07:52.
place in the town square to ensure emergency calls could be made to | :07:53. | :07:57.
summon help if needed. Villagers are trying to get on with life as best | :07:58. | :08:03.
they can, but it has been a challenging few days. We managed to | :08:04. | :08:07.
get the doctor armed with a phone and the fire officer, he put a 20 47 | :08:08. | :08:13.
fire crew from Dundee here. The coastguard would have lifted people | :08:14. | :08:20.
had they needed it. The forecast will continue the next couple of | :08:21. | :08:24.
days and there is talk of getting the army in to restore Braemar's | :08:25. | :08:29.
links. It will be some weeks at least before things get back to | :08:30. | :08:30.
normal for this community. Away from Deeside, other major | :08:31. | :08:34.
rivers have again burst their banks Perth is a town that knows all about | :08:35. | :08:49.
flooding, yet it was caught a little off-guard this afternoon. The River | :08:50. | :08:54.
Tay rose more quickly than expected, the flood gates down at the | :08:55. | :08:59.
Queensbridge. Firefighters pumped water from this building. Further | :09:00. | :09:03.
north in Brechin, they worked hard to keep water at bay. | :09:04. | :09:05.
north in Brechin, they worked hard childminder cleaning up after her | :09:06. | :09:10.
house and business was flooded out. It is distressing. It happens so | :09:11. | :09:15.
quickly. It is surprising how quickly water moves and the faucet | :09:16. | :09:20.
comes in. It is hardest for the children, trying to keep them calm. | :09:21. | :09:24.
comes in. It is hardest for the With farmland saturated the water | :09:25. | :09:25.

site between Cooper and -- Cupar Angus and Forfar. This car got | :09:33. | :09:39.
stuck. In Perthshire numerous roads are closed as the weather continues | :09:40. | :09:44.
to be bad. Police are warning drivers not to disobey signs. In the | :09:45. | :09:49.
Borders, two people have been charged. Do not drive through a | :09:50. | :09:55.
closed sign. The emergency services are working to maintain the network. | :09:56. | :10:00.
If the road is closed, you have to take a different route. As the | :10:01. | :10:05.
afternoon wore on and the river continued to rise, some decided it | :10:06. | :10:10.
was time to leave. We are going to be flooded because it is coming up | :10:11. | :10:15.
from the floor and increasing. It has been coming up the last couple | :10:16. | :10:20.
of hours. The whole street is coming up. All we have done is prepare. He | :10:21. | :10:24.
has moved everything and we have put things as high as we can. We have at | :10:25. | :10:29.
least had time to get ready, which a lot of places don't. And no body is | :10:30. | :10:36.
hurt. So far, firefighters on stand-by, a familiar sight this | :10:37. | :10:41.
evening, as we wait and hope for respite in this relentless rain. | :10:42. | :10:46.
The main West Coast rail line between Glasgow and Carlisle | :10:47. | :10:48.
A viaduct north of Lockerbie was damaged during last week's storm | :10:49. | :10:53.
and is now expected to take weeks to repair. | :10:54. | :10:55.
A bus journey was not what they wanted. There are no trains on the | :10:56. | :11:07.
West Coast Main line and so passengers at Glasgow Central were | :11:08. | :11:11.
taken to Carlisle by bus, adding an hour to their journey. A friend | :11:12. | :11:16.
travels down yesterday. She said she had a terrible journey. You just | :11:17. | :11:23.
hope for the best. I am upset because I have to children and it is | :11:24. | :11:28.
supposed to be direct. It is the weather, right? So I don't mind. As | :11:29. | :11:33.
long as I get there. What can you do, it is the weather, it is one of | :11:34. | :11:39.
those things. It is because of this. The lamington viaducts near | :11:40. | :11:43.
Lockerbie is closed. Storm Frank took out appear that supports the | :11:44. | :11:47.
bridge and investigations are continuing into the damage, but they | :11:48. | :11:54.
are being hampered by the bad weather. At the moment you can | :11:55. | :11:57.
either get a bus from Glasgow Central to Carlisle and carry on the | :11:58. | :12:01.
journey is normal, or get a train to Edinburgh and go by rail on the east | :12:02. | :12:06.
Coast mainline. Virgin Trains tickets will be accepted for these | :12:07. | :12:09.
journeys. Network Rail said today... Network Rail say they hope | :12:10. | :12:33.
replacement buses will be a thing of the past by the end of January. They | :12:34. | :12:37.
say they are working to repair the viaduct. The problem is a lot of the | :12:38. | :12:42.
work is needed to be done under water and the weather is hampering | :12:43. | :12:46.
efforts. Hopefully by February services will be back to normal. | :12:47. | :12:51.
That is the round-up on the weather. Players are being inspired by Gary | :12:52. | :13:18.
Anderson, who will go on to win more world titles. So says his manager. | :13:19. | :13:27.
The story of a man's extraordinary journey after a devastating health | :13:28. | :13:31.
diagnosis is told in a BBC documentary tonight. At the age of | :13:32. | :13:35.
29, Gordon Aikman was told he was dying. | :13:36. | :13:38.
He was diagnosed with motor neurone disease. | :13:39. | :13:40.
Over the past year he's been telling his inspiring story | :13:41. | :13:42.
This is Gordon Aikman before he got ill. At 29, working on the Scottish | :13:43. | :13:55.
referendum campaign, he realised something was wrong. The first thing | :13:56. | :14:00.
I noticed was my hands. I was not able to do the buttons on my shirt. | :14:01. | :14:06.
I was struggling with cutlery, typing, tying isolators, very | :14:07. | :14:11.
ordinary, everyday things. After tests, doctors gave him a | :14:12. | :14:17.
devastating diagnosis. The muscle has been lost here, which is the | :14:18. | :14:21.
hallmark of motor neuron disease. It is a cruel condition. It attacks | :14:22. | :14:25.
your brain and your spinal-cord and your nerves, leading to muscle | :14:26. | :14:30.
weakness. And then I will become increasingly disabled. Ultimately, I | :14:31. | :14:34.
will be paralysed. But Gordon is not giving in without a fight. Three, | :14:35. | :14:42.
two, one... He's raising cash to find a cure and demanding better | :14:43. | :14:48.
patient care. He persuaded the First Minister to publicly fund a team of | :14:49. | :14:52.
specialist nurses and give patients who can no longer speak the right to | :14:53. | :14:58.
voice technology. But no matter how successful Gordon's campaign is, | :14:59. | :15:05.
nothing can stop his body failing. Carers help in feeds, wash and | :15:06. | :15:08.
dress. And he can no longer walk unaided. These are some of the last | :15:09. | :15:21.
steps he took. It is my pleasure to declare you married. And you may | :15:22. | :15:25.
kiss. Gordon's living life to the full. Because he does not know how | :15:26. | :15:34.
long he has left. There is no point giving yourself that it is going to | :15:35. | :15:38.
be easy for my mother to see her son pass within her own lifetime. Or for | :15:39. | :15:48.
Joe to see his husband die. I am not going to sit here and pretend it | :15:49. | :15:56.
will be easy. He has won awards for his campaign, which is on course to | :15:57. | :16:00.
raise ?500,000. And friends have given their new baby, Gordon as a | :16:01. | :16:10.
middle name in his honour. And you can see the fight of Gordon's life | :16:11. | :16:15.
tonight on BBC One Scotland at 8:30pm. And now, look at other | :16:16. | :16:22.
stories. Police have released the name of the kayaker who died in an | :16:23. | :16:26.
accident on the River Findhorn last week. He was 54-year-old Lawrence | :16:27. | :16:34.
Henderson from Aberdeenshire. A coastguard rescue operation was said | :16:35. | :16:38.
to have been hindered by worsening weather conditions. His body was | :16:39. | :16:44.
recovered on Hogmanay. Up to 160 retail jobs are to be created at | :16:45. | :16:50.
Edinburgh airport this year. The announcement follows the | :16:51. | :16:54.
redevelopment of retail space. The jobs are in addition to the opening | :16:55. | :16:55.
of three new outlets in December. Police have cordoned off a Shetland | :16:56. | :17:09.
beach after a highly toxic distress fully washed up on the shore. The | :17:10. | :17:12.
marine locations layer was found on Saturday evening by a member of the | :17:13. | :17:14.
public. Bomb disposal experts are not due at the scene until | :17:15. | :17:18.
Wednesday. More than a quarter of homeowners are worried that they | :17:19. | :17:21.
might not be able to cover the cost of housing during 2016. A survey by | :17:22. | :17:26.
shelter Scotland suggested almost 10% of those concerned were worried | :17:27. | :17:30.
about meeting payments this month. The charity said it had been | :17:31. | :17:34.
contacted by dozens every day. A survey of more than 1000 people was | :17:35. | :17:44.
carried out by you go of. -- two. A vessel is addressed eastern | :17:45. | :17:50.

vessel. Police covering what labour and sky knack have grabbed attention | :18:02. | :18:05.
online with witty tweeting. This message has been retweeted more than | :18:06. | :18:13.

sport. Fresh from being crowned world | :18:15. | :18:31.
darts champion again, Gary Anderson's manager says there's | :18:32. | :18:33.
more to come from the man they call Anderson successfully | :18:34. | :18:36.
defended his PDC title at Alexandra Palace | :18:37. | :18:38.
in London last night. And Anderson's success is helping | :18:39. | :18:40.
to inspire the next generation of Scottish darts stars - | :18:41. | :18:42.
as our reporter Brian McLauchlin The morning after the night before. | :18:43. | :18:48.
Young Scottish darts players on the keep, watching their hero retained | :18:49. | :18:54.
his world crown. -- on the oche. And Gary Anderson is still the king at | :18:55. | :19:00.
the Palace! The Scot coming out on top after a tense battle against | :19:01. | :19:04.
England's Adrian Lewis. It was not just all about the trophy last | :19:05. | :19:09.
night. That was a small matter of ?300,000 prize for Gary Anderson. | :19:10. | :19:13.
But these kids are only interested in winning tournaments. To call | :19:14. | :19:19.
yourself World Champion Tom at number one, it is great. That is | :19:20. | :19:27.
your ambition. Yes. He goes to an exhibition and he's good, | :19:28. | :19:30.
encouraging the kids. When they see him on TV, winning something like | :19:31. | :19:35.
that, they think, I could do that. Anderson's manager says there is | :19:36. | :19:39.
more to come before he hangs up his arrows. There is no doubt another | :19:40. | :19:43.
couple of World Championships in him. The fearful thing is that there | :19:44. | :19:48.
couple of World Championships in are so many great players coming | :19:49. | :19:50.
about. Last night, there were great players. Double 18, leaving 32. It | :19:51. | :19:57.
was not all plain sailing as Anderson miscounted on a couple of | :19:58. | :20:00.
occasions. One youngster said that this does not happen to them. I am | :20:01. | :20:08.
really fast accounting. Better than Gary Anderson? Easy! -- fast at | :20:09. | :20:16.
counting. Gary Anderson became only the third person to retain the darts | :20:17. | :20:18.
title. Andy Murray says he would miss | :20:19. | :20:21.
the final of the Australian Open, if he gets there, should his wife | :20:22. | :20:24.
go into labour early. Murray admits it would be | :20:25. | :20:27.
disappointing to miss the final - but far more disappointing to miss | :20:28. | :20:29.
the birth of his child. He's been in action today playing | :20:30. | :20:33.
both singles and doubles Andy Murray started the New Year as | :20:34. | :20:46.
he finished the old, playing for work and helping Britain to victory. | :20:47. | :20:53.
Looking good. They lead 4-1. It is not quite the Davis Cup but with the | :20:54. | :20:58.
Australian open just two weeks away, the Hopman Cup, a extreme events, is | :20:59. | :21:02.
all part of Andy Murray 's preparations for the first Grand | :21:03. | :21:08.
Slam of the year. He outfoxed as his opponent. Playing doubles with | :21:09. | :21:11.
Heather Watson will not be on the agenda in Melbourne, but it proved a | :21:12. | :21:14.
successful partnership as they beat Caroline Garcia and her team-mate on | :21:15. | :21:23.
a tie-break. Double delight for Judy Murray and a win for her Sun and | :21:24. | :21:32.
Watson, who she is now coaching. Earlier, Andy Murray turned on the | :21:33. | :21:36.
entertainment, en route to a more comfortable win in the singles. | :21:37. | :21:41.
Despite complaining of a sore hip, he seems to be moving around well, | :21:42. | :21:45.
as he eased to a straight sets victory. So his first competitive | :21:46. | :21:54.
outing of 2016 went according to plan. He will be hoping that the | :21:55. | :21:57.
next few weeks follow suit, with the Australian open and fatherhood | :21:58. | :22:00.
inbound. Dundee have announced | :22:01. | :22:06.
that James McPake has fractured his kneecap | :22:07. | :22:07.
and will undergo surgery tomorrow. The defender had an MRI scan today | :22:08. | :22:09.
after suffering the injury during their Dundee derby | :22:10. | :22:12.
win at the weekend. He appeared to be in agony | :22:13. | :22:14.
following a challenge on John The Dens Park club say they'll | :22:15. | :22:16.
have a better idea of how long To say Christina Morrison has lived | :22:17. | :22:30.
a long and eventful life During World War Two the pensioner | :22:31. | :22:34.
from Inverness worked at the war office in London and decoded | :22:35. | :22:44.
top-secret messages for Churchill. In fact her experiences have proved | :22:45. | :22:46.
to be of such historical significance that she's | :22:47. | :22:49.
had her first book Raised in Inverness along with nine | :22:50. | :22:58.
siblings, Christina Morrison was sent to the intelligence service in | :22:59. | :23:02.
Whitehall soon after war was declared. She had been transported | :23:03. | :23:08.
to another world, and the feisty Highlander's arrival left her London | :23:09. | :23:13.
colleagues used. A London girl said to me, Chris, why did they take you | :23:14. | :23:21.
from the sticks to come to work in London? But after a couple of days, | :23:22. | :23:28.
I realised that London girls were very efficient. They were very | :23:29. | :23:34.
sophisticated, but they had not a clue as to what was happening in the | :23:35. | :23:41.
rest of the country. Working as a decoder in Winston Churchill's | :23:42. | :23:44.
underground bunker, the youngster deciphered messages for his eyes | :23:45. | :23:50.
only. But she only met him once. In his pyjamas. In the dead of night. I | :23:51. | :24:00.
saw this man walking along, with pyjamas. And when I got level with | :24:01. | :24:08.
them, he said, good evening. At the age of 96, Christina has just | :24:09. | :24:13.
published a book documenting her two very different lives. And she still | :24:14. | :24:17.
has mixed emotions about the coding a message from the popular German | :24:18. | :24:24.
general, Erwin Rommel, implicated in a plot to overthrow Hitler. I felt | :24:25. | :24:28.
that he tears coming down because I had two brothers that fought against | :24:29. | :24:35.
the Germans. I should have hated him but I did not. I thought of him as a | :24:36. | :24:44.
patriot for his own country. And while living with the dangers of | :24:45. | :24:49.
Germany raids, her job had its perks, including lunch and benchers | :24:50. | :24:53.
for the Ritz. My mother used to say, I could not take you to the Ritz. -- | :24:54. | :24:58.
luncheon vouchers. I was quite pleased to tell her that I had been | :24:59. | :25:02.
to the Ritz very often. The publication of the book, four years | :25:03. | :25:06.
short of her 100th birthday, is another wonderful chapter in her | :25:07. | :25:16.
long and remarkable life. Those parts of the country hit by | :25:17. | :25:19.
the heavy rain will be hoping the weather will calm down a little. | :25:20. | :25:23.
Judith has the latest. Not quite yet. More rain to come. It has been | :25:24. | :25:28.
raining relentlessly across the north-east since Saturday and the | :25:29. | :25:31.
reason for all of this, two things happening. This cast iron area of | :25:32. | :25:35.
high pressure over Scandinavia. To the size of us, this area of low | :25:36. | :25:39.
pressure. These weather fronts grinding to a front. -- grinding to | :25:40. | :25:47.
a halt. More moisture from the North Sea, hence the rain we have seen | :25:48. | :25:50.
across the north-east. There is still a rolling Amber warning across | :25:51. | :25:59.
Angus and Tayside, and that is in place until tonight. More flooding | :26:00. | :26:04.
is expected and also some difficult travel conditions. You can see the | :26:05. | :26:07.
rain is relentlessly pushing and across the East. The rain will | :26:08. | :26:16.
become less fierce overnight. Drier weather up towards the north-west | :26:17. | :26:22.
corner. Still windy towards the east, with cold shower is. | :26:23. | :26:28.
Generally, temperatures around four or five. Tomorrow, very little | :26:29. | :26:31.
change. Eastern areas seeing relentless rain. Gradually turning | :26:32. | :26:37.
right, with patchy rain or showers towards the south-west. In the | :26:38. | :26:40.
afternoon, we will have those warnings in force across the | :26:41. | :26:45.
south-east, with a yellow warning, ADI where warning. Further showers | :26:46. | :26:48.
to come across the West. Temperatures six or seven. -- a be | :26:49. | :27:01.
where warning. Turning cold the further north you are. As we had | :27:02. | :27:04.
through the rest further north you are. As we had | :27:05. | :27:06.
showers to come further north you are. As we had | :27:07. | :27:08.
south-west and rain in the East. further north you are. As we had | :27:09. | :27:11.
Overnight, it will stay the same. Wednesday, we will see a bit of | :27:12. | :27:18.
respite. Eastern areas becoming lighter, staying dry with bright | :27:19. | :27:22.
sunny spells. Gradually, the rain will ease. That is your forecast. | :27:23. | :27:32.
Now, a reminder of tonight's main news. | :27:33. | :27:34.
David Cameron has dismissed a video featuring a suspected British | :27:35. | :27:36.
Intelligence officials are trying to identify the masked man | :27:37. | :27:40.
in the footage, issued by the so-called | :27:41. | :27:42. |
