Two severe flood warnings are in force this evening

in Aberdeenshire, as eastern Scotland continues

Residents in parts of the Donside area of Aberdeen are being advised

to evacuate their homes tonight as the River Don threatens

The environmental agency SEPA says the river has reached the highest

Kevin Keane is in the Grantholme area of the city now.

This is the River Don behind me at it is getting higher and higher. For

much of the day, there has been concern about Cantor and

individually further upstream. Warnings had been issued at both of

those relatively small communities. But this evening, the attention is

focused here. Not so much because of the eminent risk of flooding, but

because if that flooding does happen, it is a huge area to

evacuate. Police and other services have been knocking on doors here and

inviting people to consider the possibility of evacuating their

homes. The concern is that there is a big body of water heading down

stream. It is high tide in the next couple of hours in the North Sea

about half an a mile in that direction. A lot of concern about

this and other area was. Meanwhile, a hole has appeared

in the runway at Aberdeen Airport, believed to have been caused

by the heavy rainfall. The runway was closed

and flights diverted. An airport spokesperson said that it

has now shortened the runway for the foreseeable future,
