There's new hope tonight for the future of the Scottish | :00:08. | :00:14.
The international metals firm, Liberty House, has confirmed to BBC | :00:15. | :00:19.
Scotland that it's interested in buying Tata's mothballed | :00:20. | :00:19.
But the Scottish Government says a deal is not guaranteed. | :00:20. | :00:23.
Here's our political correspondent, Glenn Campbell. | :00:24. | :00:27.
The steel mills of Lanarkshire need a new owner, if they're | :00:28. | :00:30.
Interest from Liberty House is welcome. | :00:31. | :00:39.
I'm hopeful we will make progress, but I do not wish to raise | :00:40. | :00:46.
expectations and then see them dashed. | :00:47. | :00:47.
But we're working optimistically, and this is a very positive | :00:48. | :00:49.
For all the workforce who are affected in particular. | :00:50. | :00:57.
In recent months, many steelworkers have been laid off. | :00:58. | :01:17.
The plans are being mothballed but key workers are being kept on to | :01:18. | :01:26.
keep the plant as attractive as possible to a potential buyer. | :01:27. | :01:29.
In Motherwell locals say they cannotafford to lose steel. | :01:30. | :01:31.
It's pretty bad, because it is pulling the place apart. | :01:32. | :01:36.
You can see the state of Motherwell, it is pretty bad right now. | :01:37. | :01:37.
UK steel is struggling to compete with cheap Chinese imports | :01:38. | :01:40.
In October, Tata announced 270 job losses at Clyde bridge and DL | :01:41. | :01:50.
By Christmas Tata was in talks with Grable Capital to sell | :01:51. | :01:59.
Today International metals firm Liberty House confirmed its interest | :02:00. | :02:15.
Given the condition of the steel market globally, it is probably | :02:16. | :02:19.
in the best interests of the Scottish plants | :02:20. | :02:23.
We believe the business model would sustain that. | :02:24. | :02:26.
That means cutting costs by buying steel from the international rather | :02:27. | :02:30.
25,000 men work for the Scottish division of the UK steel | :02:31. | :02:40.
Never again will steel be Scotland's largest industrial employer, | :02:41. | :02:46.
but it may still have a profitable future. | :02:47. | :02:46.
Having recently saved this steel works in south Wales and another | :02:47. | :02:48.
in the West Midlands, there is now a chance the Liberty | :02:49. | :02:51.
Group could do the same for Scottish steel. | :02:52. | :02:56.
The growing number of job cuts in the oil industry is having | :02:57. | :02:59.
a "massive and dangerous" impact on the mental health of workers - | :03:00. | :03:04.
that's according to a leading support group. | :03:05. | :03:04.
More than 700 job losses in the sector have been announced | :03:05. | :03:06.
The suicide-prevention group, Choose Life, says it's vital those | :03:07. | :03:12.
affected seek help, as Fiona Stalker reports | :03:13. | :03:20.
I was bursting into tears every now and again and crying. | :03:21. | :03:21.
Me and my wife were arguing, at each other's throats. | :03:22. | :03:25.
This oil worker's world fell apart when he lost his job. | :03:26. | :03:30.
I came out of the job that day and burst into tears. | :03:31. | :03:35.
I thought, "Sod it, I'm away for a swim." | :03:36. | :03:39.
I actually thought of topping myself, until I saw my little boy's | :03:40. | :03:40.
There are some very visible signs of the downturn in Aberdeen, | :03:41. | :03:47.
but experts say this problem is often hidden. | :03:48. | :03:52.
There are indications that what is happening in the oil and gas | :03:53. | :03:57.
industry is impacting on our suicide figures. | :03:58. | :03:57.
As part of the Choose Life group and Choose Life community, | :03:58. | :04:06.
we target the north-east of Scotland, to try and get | :04:07. | :04:09.
It's OK to talk about suicide, and especially OK to go and seek | :04:10. | :04:14.
Many may not need that help but there are calls tonight for more | :04:15. | :04:23.
They are broken, a lot of them are seriously hurt by it. | :04:24. | :04:25.
Husbands and wives, sitting crying in cars, | :04:26. | :04:27.
I know a few of them are struggling and are seeking support | :04:28. | :04:41.
with the problems they are facing - financial problems, relationship | :04:42. | :04:44.
problems - just breakdowns of the family, really. | :04:45. | :04:50.
It was a fear of a family breakdown that led this oil worker | :04:51. | :04:53.
My little boy is worth more than that, so I ended up | :04:54. | :05:00.
I found the counselling quite helped. | :05:01. | :05:04.
When I came out of there I felt a bit more worthwhile. | :05:05. | :05:08.
And support staff hope this story of one oil worker will help lift | :05:09. | :05:11.
the darkness facing many more in the weeks ahead. | :05:12. | :05:18.
If you've been affected by any of the issues raised in that report, | :05:19. | :05:22.
you can call the BBC Action Line to hear recorded information | :05:23. | :05:26.
about organisations that offer advice and support. | :05:27. | :05:26.
Lines are open 24 hours and calls are free from landlines and mobiles. | :05:27. | :05:39.
A Glasgow man, who murdered his neighbour in a row over dog fouling, | :05:40. | :05:42.
will serve at least 14 years in jail. | :05:43. | :05:44.
28-year-old Martin Carroll repeatedly stabbed Stephen Gannon | :05:45. | :05:45.
in their tenement close in Springburn last August. | :05:46. | :05:51.
Carroll later told his grandmother: "I've done something stupid." | :05:52. | :05:59.
One of the first people in Scotland to benefit from a new surgical | :06:00. | :06:01.
treatment for emphysema has been speaking about the huge improvement | :06:02. | :06:03.
Patricia McCall had tiny valves inserted in her lungs as part | :06:04. | :06:09.
of a trial at the Golden Jubilee National Hospital in Clydebank. | :06:10. | :06:10.
Our health correspondent Eleanor Bradford reports. | :06:11. | :06:21.
Nine months ago, just cleaning her windows would have left | :06:22. | :06:23.
It meant she had to give up her job as a cleaner. | :06:24. | :06:27.
After a life of smoking, she told me how her emphysema had | :06:28. | :06:30.
It's like someone has their arms around you and are just crushing | :06:31. | :06:36.
you and then someone else has their hands over your mouth. | :06:37. | :06:38.
You know, there is just nowhere you can go. | :06:39. | :06:40.
Although Patricia couldn't breathe, her lungs were actually huge | :06:41. | :06:45.
because they were trying to compensate for damaged tissue. | :06:46. | :06:48.
Normally, the lungs should be approximately that size, | :06:49. | :06:55.
and you can see the diaphragms have been pushed right down and the lungs | :06:56. | :06:55.
Lung surgeon Alan Kirk was testing out this new valve and Patricia | :06:56. | :07:00.
Going down through the throat, the titanium and silicon valves | :07:01. | :07:07.
They allow air to come out of damaged areas, | :07:08. | :07:13.
but not to go in, diverting it just to healthy parts. | :07:14. | :07:20.
If the valves are put in place so that no air can get in, | :07:21. | :07:21.
ultimately, that air will seep out through the one-way valve, | :07:22. | :07:25.
shrinking that lobe right down, so that as the patient breathes | :07:26. | :07:29.
normally, be it under normal conditions or stress, | :07:30. | :07:31.
air cannot get into that damaged part. | :07:32. | :07:34.
It replaces the need for major surgery and costs the same. | :07:35. | :07:39.
Patricia now feels so much better, she is planning her first holiday | :07:40. | :07:40.
Everybody I see, they cannot get over how good I'm looking. | :07:41. | :07:48.
At one point I said to my sister, "Everybody's telling me..." | :07:49. | :07:50.
I went, "What did I look like before it?!" | :07:51. | :07:52.
Because the procedure being conducted here is part | :07:53. | :07:59.
of a trial, it is not available to most people yet. | :08:00. | :08:01.
But doctors here hope it could be suitable for up to a third | :08:02. | :08:07.
of emphysema patients, a condition that's particularly | :08:08. | :08:08.
The helicopters and crew of the Royal Navy's last search | :08:09. | :08:18.
and rescue unit at HMS Gannet at Prestwick have been taking part | :08:19. | :08:21.
The service has been taken over by the Maritime | :08:22. | :08:31.
Cameron Buttle joined them as they made their lap of honour | :08:32. | :08:35.
Callsign 177 takes to the air for the final time. | :08:36. | :08:38.
Flying in formation, the two Sea Kings that made up | :08:39. | :08:40.
the Royal Navy search and rescue team based at Prestwick. | :08:41. | :08:45.
Their route would take them over their old patch, | :08:46. | :08:45.
the huge swathe of the country that stretched for 98,000 square miles. | :08:46. | :08:48.
They rescued thousands of people from all over it. | :08:49. | :08:50.
This is the last flight of the HMS Gannett search and rescue unit | :08:51. | :09:11.
- the last chance to see much loved helicopters in the Royal Navy. | :09:12. | :09:17.
People have been out across the route to wish them well. | :09:18. | :09:20.
They followed the Clyde through Glasgow, past the hospitals | :09:21. | :09:24.
Then a graceful turn north into the Highlands and mountains. | :09:25. | :09:27.
The scene of some of their most daring rescues. | :09:28. | :09:33.
On the ground, rescue teams from all over fired flares, | :09:34. | :09:35.
It's all understood, once again, thank you very much | :09:36. | :09:42.
for all your support and help over the many years. | :09:43. | :09:46.
A genuine show of affection for what we've done. | :09:47. | :09:55.
You see how many people are around, the different types of people | :09:56. | :10:08.
supporting us, whether it's fire brigade, ambulance service, | :10:09. | :10:08.
These teams have seen these hills and mountains at their deadly worst, | :10:09. | :10:11.
in blizzards and gales, but today, appropriately, | :10:12. | :10:16.
The flight circled around Stirlingshire over | :10:17. | :10:32.
and a special moment, down through the capital, | :10:33. | :10:41.
past the castle, down Princes Street, over Arthur's Seat. | :10:42. | :10:42.
And finally the last touchdown back at base. | :10:43. | :10:44.
A lot more emotional than I thought it would be, | :10:45. | :10:48.
a couple of the group mentioned that as we were taxiing out, | :10:49. | :10:55.
seeing the people who turned out to say goodbye. | :10:56. | :10:55.
Really fabulous trip, quite emotional for all of us, | :10:56. | :10:59.
great to see everybody out there waving and sorry it's over, | :11:00. | :11:02.
HMS Gannett was the last ever military search and rescue unit. | :11:03. | :11:05.
The Coast Guard has now taken over, but after four decades in the air | :11:06. | :11:09.
over Scotland, today was, quite simply, the end of an era. | :11:10. | :11:16.
Let's get the weather outlook for tonight and tomorrow | :11:17. | :11:17.
I suppose that means frost, Christopher? | :11:18. | :11:28.
Yes, it does. Those clear skies tonight means it | :11:29. | :11:36.
will be cold with the risk of snow and ice. At the moment, those | :11:37. | :11:42.
showers are through the North and West but be moved out towards the | :11:43. | :11:48.
South West. Wintry showers across Northern Ireland and Wales will | :11:49. | :11:52.
shift to the Midlands. Temperatures, dawn, and the countryside will be | :11:53. | :11:59.
around -5 minus six degrees. Friday morning it is a cold and frosty | :12:00. | :12:04.
start. The wintry showers feeding in. A fairly fresh wind. Some | :12:05. | :12:08.
disruption potentially on the travel firm because of those snow showers. | :12:09. | :12:13.
Perhaps the Glasgow area and down towards Lanarkshire. The South is | :12:14. | :12:20.
largely dry, December Aberdeenshire. For the West, the wintry showers are | :12:21. | :12:23.
with us. Largely dry for the North but rain showers for the Northern | :12:24. | :12:28.
Isles, although the winds will ease. For Friday morning itself, the | :12:29. | :12:31.
showers continuing to march southwards. The South of the border, | :12:32. | :12:41.
plenty of sunshine, chilly at times and similar for us in Scotland, | :12:42. | :12:45.
chubby hubby from the West course. Two or three Celsius. The winds are | :12:46. | :12:52.
more northerly in nature. Showers for Murray and Aberdeenshire. On | :12:53. | :12:55.
Friday evening the same for the East coast. For many on Friday night it | :12:56. | :12:59.
is dry, clear and cold. We could see temperatures close to negative | :13:00. | :13:07.
double digits. Into the weekend, Saturday, high pressure with us but | :13:08. | :13:09.
did because I won this weather system. For most, dry and sunny, but | :13:10. | :13:15.
chilly. I can't pushing in turning the sunshine milky but if that rain | :13:16. | :13:21.
arrives it could well turn into snow by Saturday night. | :13:22. | :13:25.
Thank you, Christopher. Our next update is during Breakfast | :13:26. | :13:27.
at 6:25 tomorrow morning. But from everyone on the late team | :13:28. | :13:30.
here in Glasgow and around | :13:31. | :13:34. |
