A 26 mother has been convicted as being a member of Islamic State.

:00:00.:00:07.

Gale force winds and torrential rain cause travel disruption,

:00:08.:00:11.

damage buildings and bring down power lines.

:00:12.:00:13.

Shetland takes a battering, as 100mph winds whip

:00:14.:00:16.

I am at Scotland's traffic control centre, where they are keeping a

:00:17.:00:31.

close eye on the roads as more bad weather approaches.

:00:32.:00:31.

The family of a Fife woman who died in Israel

:00:32.:00:35.

in suspicious circumstances demand answers from authorities

:00:36.:00:36.

Andy Murray is through to his fifth Australian Open tennis final.

:00:37.:00:49.

And Scottish skiers are heading to the Alps-

:00:50.:00:51.

and dominating Team GB's line-up at the Special Olympics.

:00:52.:01:08.

Storm Gertrude has battered much of the country.

:01:09.:01:15.

From Shetland to Saltcoats, storm-force winds and heavy rain

:01:16.:01:17.

have caused transport disruption and damage to property.

:01:18.:01:20.

Dozens of schools were closed and thousands of homes

:01:21.:01:22.

The country woke up to a battering as Storm Gertrude made her presence

:01:23.:01:38.

felt. But the force of the winds didn't put some of. Cyclists and

:01:39.:01:44.

joggers were undeterred in Glasgow. How is your cycle to work? I am

:01:45.:01:48.

coping really well, despite the strong winds. You are committed! Not

:01:49.:01:56.

really, mad! But others found the walk to work a struggle. And

:01:57.:02:01.

diversions made the commute even more miserable. Across the country,

:02:02.:02:05.

there was travel disruption. The Forth Road Bridge was travelled all

:02:06.:02:11.

more -- shuttle morning. In Orkney, it was to story for these ferries to

:02:12.:02:16.

break the journey and then overturn lorry caused delays on the M nine

:02:17.:02:21.

motorway and it was a big operation to raise this lorry on the a 96.

:02:22.:02:26.

Throughout the day, people have a working to get train services back

:02:27.:02:29.

to normal but when I was there at rush hour, it was a different

:02:30.:02:33.

picture. At this time of the morning, you would expect the

:02:34.:02:37.

station to be far busier than it is and that is because trains are

:02:38.:02:40.

cancelled on the West Highland line, so you can't get to open or Fort

:02:41.:02:45.

William. If you are trying to go to Inverness, you can get as far as

:02:46.:02:50.

Perth before the services are cancelled, and the usual 15 minute

:02:51.:02:53.

Glasgow to Edinburgh train is running every half an hour. Outside

:02:54.:02:57.

Central Station, taxes picked up people who were running late. Only

:02:58.:03:02.

from Paisley but it has taken me almost twice as long as it normally

:03:03.:03:08.

would, so not ideal. We are in a taxi this morning, normally there is

:03:09.:03:12.

a queue, but nobody is about this morning. Are you laid? Yes. At the

:03:13.:03:19.

height of the storm, 12,000 people were without power. On the Black

:03:20.:03:23.

Isle, workers repaired damaged lines. Our forecasters have been

:03:24.:03:26.

monitoring Storm Gertrude throughout the course of the weekend we have

:03:27.:03:33.

moved resources, engineers, support staff, mobile generators, into

:03:34.:03:36.

position across the Highlands and Islands to be ready to respond as

:03:37.:03:39.

quickly as possible. On Shetland, where winds reached over 100 mph, as

:03:40.:03:46.

well as Orkney in the Western Isles, schools were closed. Damage to

:03:47.:03:49.

buildings and pupils in other schools, like this one in Edinburgh,

:03:50.:03:53.

got a day off as well. And the scaffolding at this building site in

:03:54.:03:58.

Lenzi toppled over. The worst may have passed most of us now, but it

:03:59.:04:02.

will take time to repair the damage that Gertrude has caused.

:04:03.:04:05.

Ferries serving the islands on the west coast have experienced

:04:06.:04:07.

disruption for days now, thanks

:04:08.:04:08.

Storm Gertrude has only made that situation worse,

:04:09.:04:12.

with many services now cancelled until Monday at the earliest.

:04:13.:04:14.

Aileen Clarke spent the day on the west coast.

:04:15.:04:25.

It was wild at Ed Robinson harbour this morning, with huge winds

:04:26.:04:32.

whipping angry spray over the sea wall. The noise of the Gaels

:04:33.:04:39.

battering the ferry office and giving the tropical palms a big

:04:40.:04:47.

shake. There have been reports of 70 mph gales over on Arran today and it

:04:48.:04:55.

is pretty rough here in Ardrossan and that is why there are no ferries

:04:56.:05:00.

running. No there is a ripe for Arran at all, and others were

:05:01.:05:06.

disrupted. -- there were no ferries from Arran at all. And it is getting

:05:07.:05:11.

worse before it is getting better. The weather looks like it will

:05:12.:05:14.

worsen today, it will be particularly bad tomorrow and will

:05:15.:05:18.

not improve until Sunday, so at the moment, most services are subject to

:05:19.:05:21.

cancellation and the late and that will extend into tomorrow and

:05:22.:05:24.

hopefully when the weather improves, we will look to make additional

:05:25.:05:29.

sailings on Sunday. But it may be the case that if you were not able

:05:30.:05:30.

sailings on Sunday. But it may be to get the ferry this morning, you

:05:31.:05:35.

may not get it until Sunday? That is right. Further down the Clyde coast,

:05:36.:05:39.

people were trying to get on with their work, but Storm Gertrude

:05:40.:05:45.

wasn't making it easy in Saltcoats. It is horrendous, very hard to work.

:05:46.:05:50.

It is terrible, the wind and the rain here was really bad, your car

:05:51.:05:56.

kind of fears of the road. You are not frightened to go out in the wind

:05:57.:06:01.

with your hair nicely done? I won't do that, it will be spoiled. If it

:06:02.:06:09.

is windy, I use this. In Largs, you had to hang onto whatever you had on

:06:10.:06:13.

your head today and Western ferries managed to resume their crossing to

:06:14.:06:18.

Dunoon later in the morning, and there were very relieved visitors

:06:19.:06:23.

and residents in the Isle of Bute who managed to get a ferry across to

:06:24.:06:30.

Rochus E. They say they will try and make use of any window tomorrow to

:06:31.:06:35.

get ferries running -- across to Rothsea.

:06:36.:06:36.

Shetland has borne the brunt of the gale-force winds,

:06:37.:06:39.

with a red "danger to life" weather warning in place

:06:40.:06:41.

The gusts have been among the highest ever seen

:06:42.:06:44.

It has been an exceptional day of wind here in Shetland. We have had

:06:45.:06:52.

hurricane force winds wind here in Shetland. We have had

:06:53.:06:56.

islands most of the day and wind here in Shetland. We have had

:06:57.:06:59.

strongest wind was up around 105 mph. The Met Office says that even

:07:00.:07:03.

though Shetland is well used the strong winds, this has been

:07:04.:07:07.

exceptional. We get a hurricane force 12 once a year, usually around

:07:08.:07:09.

January, so force 12 once a year, usually around

:07:10.:07:14.

but these costs are pretty unusual, close to the highest we have ever

:07:15.:07:18.

but these costs are pretty unusual, recorded. Given the strength of the

:07:19.:07:19.

but these costs are pretty unusual, wind, it has been surprising there

:07:20.:07:21.

has been relatively little damage in Shetland. There was Navan blown off

:07:22.:07:26.

the road earlier today, a few roof slates have come off, but according

:07:27.:07:30.

to the police, it is because the people of Shetland have been

:07:31.:07:34.

prepared. We made the decision to close all of the schools on The

:07:35.:07:37.

Island to ensure no children were in danger. We have put safety measures

:07:38.:07:42.

in place and the public seem to be sitting indoors and setting the

:07:43.:07:46.

event out, no reports of any significant

:07:47.:07:49.

event out, no reports of any anybody, which is the main thing.

:07:50.:07:52.

Shetland seems to have been relatively unscathed by these

:07:53.:07:55.

exceptionally strong winds. Around 400 properties were left without

:07:56.:08:00.

power for a short while. There have been no interisland ferries or

:08:01.:08:04.

power for a short while. There have down to the mainland were called

:08:05.:08:09.

from 1pm and have not run. The worst of it is past, but we understand it

:08:10.:08:13.

will be another blustery weekend and Monday, we are warned there could be

:08:14.:08:17.

strong winds again. Hopes are high in Shetland that it won't be quite a

:08:18.:08:21.

strong, not those 100 mph winds again.

:08:22.:08:23.

And, as if that wasn't enough, I'm afraid there's more bad weather

:08:24.:08:26.

An amber warning for snow and more wind is now in place for most

:08:27.:08:30.

of mainland Scotland till 11am tomorrow.

:08:31.:08:31.

That's expected to cause more problems on the roads.

:08:32.:08:34.

Steven Godden is at the Traffic Scotland control centre

:08:35.:08:36.

You can see that huge bank of screens over my shoulder and it is

:08:37.:08:51.

made up of images taken from CCTV cameras that between them cover most

:08:52.:08:56.

of Scotland's major road network. Today, as they do every other day,

:08:57.:09:00.

the staff are keeping their eye on the screens, keeping their eye out

:09:01.:09:04.

for any problems and in truth, tonight's rush-hour has been a lot

:09:05.:09:08.

easier than this morning where, among the any other problems, was

:09:09.:09:12.

the closure of the Forth Road Bridge, which people here could see

:09:13.:09:15.

out of the window in South Queensferry, but there is still a

:09:16.:09:18.

need for vigilance. As you mentioned, there is an amber weather

:09:19.:09:22.

warning, it came into effect around half an hour ago. It is the more

:09:23.:09:29.

winds but it is also the snow, which presents a very different challenge

:09:30.:09:31.

for those responsible for keeping Scotland moving.

:09:32.:09:33.

We can deploy the critters and the ploughs accept for the areas that

:09:34.:09:40.

will get it as it comes in, so we monitor the weather and we react to

:09:41.:09:46.

it, and with temperatures dropping, we do precautionary treatment on the

:09:47.:09:49.

road so it won't freeze, we will keep on top of that right through

:09:50.:09:50.

the night. Well, the challenges that the amber

:09:51.:09:56.

warning covers much of the country so it means they can't predict

:09:57.:09:59.

precisely where the bad weather is going to come. Also, the slow, if it

:10:00.:10:05.

is to fall overnight, even if you use gritters, it needs cars to break

:10:06.:10:08.

up the snow so it becomes challenging. All transport Scotland

:10:09.:10:16.

are able to do is react and offer advice to motorists, which is as it

:10:17.:10:20.

usually is, to be prepared and if you are travelling, to take care.

:10:21.:10:23.

And Christopher will be here with an extended weekend

:10:24.:10:25.

weather forecast later in the programme.

:10:26.:10:26.

Also, coming up on tonight's Reporting Scotland...

:10:27.:10:30.

The visionary behind the car that was built by a woman for women.

:10:31.:10:34.

He's through to another Australian Open final.

:10:35.:10:38.

We'll also hear from the managers of tomorrow's League Cup semifinalists.

:10:39.:10:48.

And you'll find out why Scotland's refs are on a downer.

:10:49.:10:50.

The family of a Fife woman who died in Israel in suspicious

:10:51.:10:55.

circumstances last year are demanding answers

:10:56.:10:57.

from the authorities investigating her death.

:10:58.:11:02.

38-year-old Julie Pearson collapsed and died, after she was allegedly

:11:03.:11:04.

raped and beaten at a hostel in the town of Eilat.

:11:05.:11:08.

Lisa Summers has been to meet Julie's aunt,

:11:09.:11:11.

who's started a campaign for justice.

:11:12.:11:18.

It is two months since Julie Pearson died. Her aunt still can't quite

:11:19.:11:23.

believe she will never come home. I treated her like my daughter, she

:11:24.:11:30.

was really close. Julie hoped to move to Israel but had let her Visa

:11:31.:11:35.

expired. She was living in the popular tourist resort of Eilat. Her

:11:36.:11:39.

aunt believes a former boyfriend was responsible for her murder. Good

:11:40.:11:44.

friends have said the day before she died, her ex-boyfriend had beaten

:11:45.:11:48.

her and she was covered in bruises and she had been to this girl's

:11:49.:11:52.

house and try to get her to go to the hospital and Julie wouldn't go

:11:53.:11:55.

because she had no Visa, she was scared. The family say they are

:11:56.:12:00.

struggling to get satisfactory answers from the Israeli

:12:01.:12:04.

authorities. I spoke to police in Eilat, who said they could not

:12:05.:12:08.

provide any information and directed us to Interpol. However, they did

:12:09.:12:12.

release a report at the end of December which acknowledged duly

:12:13.:12:14.

appeared to have been beaten but they go on to say her death was not

:12:15.:12:19.

linked to the attacks. They say an investigation is still ongoing.

:12:20.:12:23.

Earlier this week, the Prime Minister said he would step in. We

:12:24.:12:27.

have good relations with Israel and we should use those good relations

:12:28.:12:30.

to make sure that when people need answers, they get them. It was

:12:31.:12:34.

Deborah's MP who raised the matter in Parliament. It seems from what we

:12:35.:12:39.

have been told, interviews with appropriate people and the gathering

:12:40.:12:43.

of evidence was not done in an appropriate manner and so the other

:12:44.:12:47.

questions we need to ask the authorities, we need to get the

:12:48.:12:51.

autopsy report, get all of the facts and a proper investigation into

:12:52.:12:54.

Julie Pearson's death so the family can have answers. The phone offers

:12:55.:13:05.

say... -- the Foreign Office. Now, Julie's family can do nothing wait.

:13:06.:13:08.

The bitter row over council funding goes on, with every council NOT run

:13:09.:13:11.

by the SNP branding the Scottish Government's offer unacceptable.

:13:12.:13:14.

Some are even looking into a legal challenge.

:13:15.:13:16.

Our local government correspondent, Jamie McIvor, is with us.

:13:17.:13:20.

And no doubts over just how the majority of councils

:13:21.:13:22.

Indeed, two important meetings took place today, one was at the local

:13:23.:13:35.

Government organisation which represents the vast bulk of Scottish

:13:36.:13:41.

councils. 21 of backed a a strongly worded motion rejecting the budget.

:13:42.:13:46.

The immediate problem is the councils will have to make up

:13:47.:13:49.

accounts and savings than they had expected in the coming year and this

:13:50.:13:52.

week, they found out the terms of the deal on offer made it far harder

:13:53.:13:57.

than before to contemplate raising council tax. Cosla describes the

:13:58.:14:03.

deal on offer as an attack on the democratic mandate of councils. Only

:14:04.:14:07.

the SNP councils didn't back the motion. Meanwhile, the four councils

:14:08.:14:12.

that are not in Cosla did hold a meeting and are equally angry and

:14:13.:14:16.

even contemplating the possibility of a legal challenge over one of the

:14:17.:14:20.

details of the offer. That will the Government in the end get its way?

:14:21.:14:26.

Certainly even Cosla accepts that is the likely outcome. Councils are

:14:27.:14:29.

heavily dependent on the Scottish Government for cash. The Government

:14:30.:14:33.

accepts the offer is a challenge but also says it is fair. It argues it

:14:34.:14:37.

has protected councils from the worst of what it calls the

:14:38.:14:41.

Westminster cuts. It says the money on offer helps maintain the council

:14:42.:14:46.

tax freeze, provides cash amongst others for maintaining the ratio of

:14:47.:14:50.

teachers to students. The deadline is a week on Tuesday for councils to

:14:51.:14:54.

accept the offer. If they do, the issue becomes how do they balance

:14:55.:14:58.

their budgets locally. We will hear from you then, thank you very much.

:14:59.:15:09.

A car built by a woman for women. Dorothy Pullinger ran the factory

:15:10.:15:21.

and 20 years after her death, her death is still unknown.

:15:22.:15:24.

When engineer Dorothy Pullinger was refused entry into the organisation

:15:25.:15:33.

of automobiles in 1930, she was told it was for men, not women, but she

:15:34.:15:37.

never gave up and in the First World War, ended up in charge of munitions

:15:38.:15:41.

workers. She moved to Dumfries and Galloway and became manager of

:15:42.:15:44.

Galloway motors, which had a female workforce.

:15:45.:15:50.

The seat was too low. They were looking through the steering wheel

:15:51.:15:57.

so she dropped the steering wheel down. She made the gear levers and

:15:58.:16:03.

the brake levers to the middle of the car. She made it so it fitted

:16:04.:16:10.

the size of a typical woman of the period. In Guernsey, his son

:16:11.:16:18.

inspects the creation. She is finally getting the recognition she

:16:19.:16:22.

deserves. Her legacy was the fact she has helped to change the

:16:23.:16:28.

attitude of societies today to respect women and their abilities as

:16:29.:16:31.

much as men's abilities. I think respect women and their abilities as

:16:32.:16:36.

is nice that the Scottish engineers and rolled her in the roll of

:16:37.:16:39.

honour. It is nice to know they and rolled her in the roll of

:16:40.:16:43.

appreciated her with far more respect than at the time of her

:16:44.:16:49.

engineering, or whatever she was being told by people, you are doing

:16:50.:16:55.

a man's. The only places can be seen as a Glasgow's beside Museum. 30

:16:56.:17:01.

years after the death of Dorothy Pullinger, only one in ten

:17:02.:17:05.

years after the death of Dorothy in the UK are women. The

:17:06.:17:05.

achievement still stand the test of time.

:17:06.:17:10.

Andy Murray is through to the final of the Australian Open tennis.

:17:11.:17:16.

It's his fifth final in the grand slam event

:17:17.:17:18.

To do that, he'll need to beat the world number one,

:17:19.:17:25.

Novak Djokovic, who's beaten him three times

:17:26.:17:27.

But, as Kheredine Idessane reports, Andy is just one of three Scots

:17:28.:17:31.

They have never known a grand slam quite like it. They came

:17:32.:17:45.

They have never known a grand slam Andy Murray, who arrived on court

:17:46.:17:49.

knowing two other Scots had already reached Melbourne finals. Could he

:17:50.:17:53.

make it a tartan travel? The big serving Canadian given -- did his

:17:54.:18:07.

best. First set Raonic, 6-4. Andy married picked a fine time to break

:18:08.:18:13.

his opponent's and level the match up. -- Andy Murray. Raonic was

:18:14.:18:22.

revelling in the rollerblader arena. Could Andy Murray make it to the

:18:23.:18:29.

deciding fifth? There were two types of pain for Raonic, the physical

:18:30.:18:34.

one, and the mental one when Andy married broke again right at the

:18:35.:18:38.

start of the deciding set. Not the only thing that got broken. Having

:18:39.:18:43.

sapped his spirit, the Scot soon served for the match. A place in his

:18:44.:18:51.

fifth Melbourne final assured. With his brother Jamie, they are the

:18:52.:18:55.

first mothers to make finals in the same slam. It will be something that

:18:56.:19:01.

is extremely rare. You will not see it very often. We should enjoy and

:19:02.:19:05.

be proud of it. It is a tough thing to do. The Murray brothers are not

:19:06.:19:12.

the only Scots in finals. It is a tartan trio, thanks to Gordon Reid

:19:13.:19:16.

who is in the finals of the wheelchair singles and doubles. Two

:19:17.:19:21.

days by three Scots going for four Australian open titles. -- two days

:19:22.:19:27.

and three Scots. The head of Scotland's football

:19:28.:19:30.

referees is angry at what he calls over the top criticism

:19:31.:19:33.

of match officials. And John Fleming says

:19:34.:19:34.

it can get refs down - at a time when the challenges they

:19:35.:19:37.

are facing are tougher than ever. Jonathan Sutherland has been

:19:38.:19:40.

speaking to him at the referees Hands up who would be a referee. A

:19:41.:19:50.

gathering in Spain for an intensive few days honing skills, an upbeat

:19:51.:19:54.

atmosphere and, according to the boss, it is not always the case.

:19:55.:19:59.

There are many occasions where referees have been really down. They

:20:00.:20:03.

have been down because they feel as if the criticism they are getting is

:20:04.:20:07.

way over the top and I would agree with that. The Scottish cup

:20:08.:20:12.

semifinal last season and a handball decision not given under mistake

:20:13.:20:16.

which could lead to a huge amount of criticism. Was it a handball? Celtic

:20:17.:20:30.

screaming for a penalty. Fleming feels sometimes goes too far. I

:20:31.:20:33.

would never be destructive in working with the media but there is

:20:34.:20:36.

a line that can be crossed, and it has been crossed several times. It

:20:37.:20:38.

is very frustrating. Sometimes you get angry about it, especially if

well as the practical sessions, video analysis of recent incidents

form part of the winter training camp. The aim, to make sure referees

:20:56.:21:01.

get more of the big decisions right. When you go back it does not mean if

:21:02.:21:05.

you go to a winter training camp, all decisions will be correct. What

:21:06.:21:10.

they will do is practice a situation, be ready for it. They

:21:11.:21:15.

will be aware of the situations and, on the practical sessions over the

:21:16.:21:18.

last few days, we should be ready and prepare for them. That should

:21:19.:21:23.

enhance the decision-making. To that is human and mistakes will happen.

that, all right they are from a lower league, but the strength of

:21:55.:22:00.

the squad creates an atmosphere of a premiership club and team and it

:22:01.:22:04.

will be a difficult game. St Johnstone have seen on a number of

occasions they are very well organised in their experience. They

is preparing to exchange Aberdeen's dry ski slope for the real

stuff in the French Alps. They're competing in

the Special Olympics for Team GB. And nearly all the Scots members

Coach Bob taking his team through their paces. Soon they will be

most about skiing? I enjoyed being with my friends on the mountain and

being on the -- in the fresh air. 11 of the 12 Scottish skiers train here

at the snow sports Centre in Aberdeen. They are part of the

Special Olympics ski group which provides training and competition

for people with intellectual disabilities. As well as the

sporting side, it also gives them a social side. They are getting to

know each other. When we are awake, they are learning to be amongst

others and how to cope with people with different needs. Over the next

few weeks, the group will be perfecting their moves and improving

their speed before the big event. I like to speed and go fast. I like

Now, a reminder of tonight's main news...

Storm Gertrude has battered much of the country today.

:27:19.:27:21.

From Shetland to Saltcoats storm-force winds and heavy rain

have caused transport disruption and damage to property.

:27:24.:27:28.

I'll be back with the headlines at 8pm and the late bulletin just

Until then, from everyone on the team - right

:27:33.:27:35.

across the country - have a very good evening.
