will be a long way off. Thank you. That is all from the BBC's news at | :00:00. | :00:00.
six and it is time to join the BBC News teams where you are. Tight on | :00:00. | :00:14.
Reporting Scotland: the new Frontier for Scotland's energy industry as | :00:15. | :00:18.
the Shetland gas terminal comes on screen. | :00:19. | :00:25.
We'll look at the challenges involved in the multi-billion pound | :00:26. | :00:28.
project, and also what it could mean for our beleaguered oil | :00:29. | :00:30.
Bringing the beautiful game to players who imagined they'd never | :00:31. | :00:33.
Also on the programme, The Scottish Cup Quarter-final draw | :00:34. | :00:46.
is being made any moment now, we'll tell you who'll play who. | :00:47. | :00:48.
The new test that could tell you your dog's IQ. | :00:49. | :01:11.
It's been 5 years in the making, cost more than ?3 billion, | :01:12. | :01:16.
and it's said to have been the UK's largest construction | :01:17. | :01:18.
But this morning the new Shetland Gas Plant came onstream. | :01:19. | :01:26.
Its operators Total say it'll provide enough energy | :01:27. | :01:28.
The first commercial gas arrives from Shetland. | :01:29. | :01:40.
At the centre of this development, this gas plant, | :01:41. | :01:43.
one of the biggest construction projects in the United Kingdom | :01:44. | :01:45.
Kingdom, very significant. will represent | :01:46. | :02:09.
To make way for this development, over one | :02:10. | :02:13.
and a half million tons of peat has been dug out. | :02:14. | :02:16.
It has been stored, to be put back once the client has been | :02:17. | :02:19.
For this apprentice, it is an opportunity to start | :02:20. | :02:22.
It needs to be cleaned out, gunk taken out, it is my job | :02:23. | :02:31.
the processes that make oil valuable. | :02:32. | :02:43.
Only now is the technology in place to extract Gas. | :02:44. | :02:47.
What we have done, we have taken one of the longest tie | :02:48. | :02:53.
backs in the world nto the United Kingdom. | :02:54. | :02:55.
At its peak, over two and a half thousand contractors were working | :02:56. | :03:05.
on the operation, accommodation barges brought in to | :03:06. | :03:07.
With such an investment, it was good for the local economy, | :03:08. | :03:23.
with local contractors engaged in part of the subcontracting. | :03:24. | :03:25.
The project has created around 200 new jobs, | :03:26. | :03:27.
the council has also secured royalty on | :03:28. | :03:28.
This is an important announcement, it is about the future | :03:29. | :03:32.
of the oil and Gas industry, across the United Kingdom, | :03:33. | :03:34.
a lot of life west of Shetland and east as well. | :03:35. | :03:36.
Far from being a sunset industry there is a lot of life west of | :03:37. | :03:42.
Shetland and in the East Shetland basin as well. | :03:43. | :03:47.
With around 17% of the remaining oil and Gas reserves, | :03:48. | :03:49.
to the west of Shetland, this is seen as key in development. | :03:50. | :03:54.
And John is at the new gas terminal for us tonight... | :03:55. | :03:57.
And a big day there for the Islands' energy industry? | :03:58. | :04:02.
It is indeed. And what good news for the oil and gas industry as well. | :04:03. | :04:10.
Uttered by low oil prices and also by thousands of job losses. Behind | :04:11. | :04:18.
me, there's roaring in the background, 200 jobs have been | :04:19. | :04:21.
created here and some of those for young people starting in their | :04:22. | :04:25.
career in the oil and gas industry. Shetland has had a long history with | :04:26. | :04:30.
oil but now the islands are turning to a new resource around the | :04:31. | :04:36.
islands, gas, to power the UK. It is interesting to note that this plant | :04:37. | :04:41.
will be able to power around 2 million homes across the UK. A David | :04:42. | :04:44.
Shetland. So what hope is there that this | :04:45. | :04:47.
new field will be the start of a resurgence for our | :04:48. | :04:50.
troubled energy industry? Here's our Business | :04:51. | :04:52.
and Economy Editor, Douglas Fraser. In 40 years, the industry has pumped | :04:53. | :05:08.
42 billion barrels of oil or gas. An estimates are that it | :05:09. | :05:14.
could realistically extract another Until recently, an investment | :05:15. | :05:16.
to extract more, from ageing fields, in four years | :05:17. | :05:32.
?40 billion was spent and nearly one tenth of that money has | :05:33. | :05:35.
been on this project. Others include Clair | :05:36. | :05:41.
Ridge and Mariner. Technically difficult | :05:42. | :05:44.
fields, delayed until new That is because of | :05:45. | :05:45.
the high cost, per It is also quite tough, | :05:46. | :05:55.
offshore oil companies can go elsewhere, Africa Brazil, | :05:56. | :06:17.
the Arctic, with better profit It could go up again, | :06:18. | :06:19.
but it has brought uncertainty. What could help, is the technology | :06:20. | :06:24.
used, in early 2000 feet Well heads are controlled | :06:25. | :06:27.
by equipment on the sea Gas flows through | :06:28. | :06:38.
a 90 mile pipeline. It has been badly held up | :06:39. | :06:41.
by that of conditions. The harsh environment, | :06:42. | :06:54.
and during the construction phase, during the civil works, | :06:55. | :07:06.
we allowed down time for weather If you faced the same decisions now | :07:07. | :07:17.
would it still get the thumbs up? A difficult decision. I think the | :07:18. | :07:24.
sanction of projects depends on our forecasts of the oil and gas price, | :07:25. | :07:33.
we invested for long periods, 20 years, so this project had positive | :07:34. | :07:40.
points so it is very difficult to say that if, today, we could | :07:41. | :07:41.
sanction it or not. Apart from the price | :07:42. | :07:50.
and technical obstacles, another challenge is | :07:51. | :07:54.
facing the industry. Warnings in recent weeks | :07:55. | :07:55.
that the Palace climate change discussions could put | :07:56. | :07:58.
constraints on oil and Gas, as governments face commitments | :07:59. | :08:01.
to cut back on damaging Some of the more expensive | :08:02. | :08:03.
may have to say under The new gas fields are good news | :08:04. | :08:07.
for the North Sea but job losses It's against this backdrop that | :08:08. | :08:11.
unions representing workers from the across the oil and gas | :08:12. | :08:14.
industry say they're coming together Our reporter Steven Duff | :08:15. | :08:17.
is in Aberdeen for us tonight. Tell us more. That's right, world | :08:18. | :08:33.
oil prices fell again today and against that background trade union | :08:34. | :08:37.
leaders met in Aberdeen to launch this fight back. The message could | :08:38. | :08:41.
be one about workers, concerned of course about the tens of thousands | :08:42. | :08:45.
of redundancies there have already been. They also worried about the | :08:46. | :08:51.
the changes that workers are facing particularly when it comes to | :08:52. | :08:55.
conditions, they fear there could be an impact on safety, particularly | :08:56. | :08:59.
offshore when some workers are moving to a three-week pattern where | :09:00. | :09:03.
they will have to work 12 hours a day for 21 days in a row. The | :09:04. | :09:07.
companies say whatever the financial pressure safety remains their | :09:08. | :09:11.
priority, the big problem for the union is, or do they represent | :09:12. | :09:14.
because traditionally the oil and gas sector hasn't been heavily | :09:15. | :09:20.
unionised. We want to see many more offshore workers become union | :09:21. | :09:23.
members so we can ensure that the voice we offer is much more | :09:24. | :09:27.
effective and stronger on their behalf. They have already started to | :09:28. | :09:30.
effective and stronger on their engage with the employers in the | :09:31. | :09:34.
industry, with the regulators, and with the government at UK and | :09:35. | :09:39.

today, concentrating on making the north-east and area of excellence, | :09:44. | :09:48.
particularly focusing on undersea commissioning. Thank you. | :09:49. | :09:52.

The Orkney and Shetland MP Alistair Carmichael has lost a bid | :10:21. | :10:32.
to have his legal fees paid by a group who took him to court. | :10:33. | :10:36.
Four of his constituents raised the action against him, | :10:37. | :10:38.
claiming he misled voters over a leaked memo before | :10:39. | :10:40.
the last election, but he was cleared in December. | :10:41. | :10:42.
A further hearing this morning concluded those who'd brought | :10:43. | :10:44.
the case shouldn't have to pay his legal bill. | :10:45. | :10:46.
Police say they've identified 22 organised crime groups | :10:47. | :10:52.
based in Scotland with significant international connections. | :10:53. | :10:54.
They say co-operation with the National Crime Agency | :10:55. | :10:56.
and HMRC at the Scottish Crime Campus has helped uncover | :10:57. | :10:59.
international links between gangs here and in a number | :11:00. | :11:01.
Our Home Affairs Correspondent, Reevel Alderson reports. | :11:02. | :11:16.

it has made the fight so much easier. | :12:52. | :12:55.
A look at other stories from across the country. | :12:56. | :13:01.
Two crashes happened on the a line this morning. A woman was injured | :13:02. | :13:07.
when the cars collided north of Inverness. Two cars involved in the | :13:08. | :13:11.
second incident nearby. Western Isles Council has described as | :13:12. | :13:16.
positive a meeting with an airline of the service to the islands. The | :13:17. | :13:21.
line has been criticised recently over flights delayed by technical | :13:22. | :13:26.
problems. Loganair says it is taking action to improve the services. | :13:27. | :13:30.
Scotland is aiming to lead the world in the development of precision | :13:31. | :13:34.
medicine, which involves tailoring medicines to the genetics of each | :13:35. | :13:38.
patient. Today First Minister Nicola Sturgeon announced a ?4 million | :13:39. | :13:43.
investment in specialist labs at the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital | :13:44. | :13:48.
in Glasgow. A single run on this machine which can sequence in human | :13:49. | :13:53.
genomics takes about two and a half hours. Whereas the human gene on | :13:54. | :13:56.
projects took 13 years to achieve that. Edinburgh airport says the | :13:57. | :14:03.
recent five-month trial of a controversial new flight path has | :14:04. | :14:06.
been a success. The route so planes taking off towards the fourth, | :14:07. | :14:12.
passing over West Lothian. The airport says it reduces congestion | :14:13. | :14:17.
and allows increased airspace capacity but no final decision will | :14:18. | :14:22.
be made until the end of the year. A Dutch cargo boat has been told to | :14:23. | :14:26.
safety in Orkney after breaking down to the west of the islands at the | :14:27. | :14:30.
weekend. The vessel which was carrying wind turbine parts was | :14:31. | :14:35.
initially due to be towed to Aberdeen but was returned due to sea | :14:36. | :14:40.
conditions. Students at Duncan of Jordanstone College of arts have | :14:41. | :14:43.
brought to life some of the strangest excuses in the UK for not | :14:44. | :14:47.
having a TV licence. They ranged from claiming that they thought a | :14:48. | :14:50.
television was a microwave to a man who believed he was king of | :14:51. | :14:54.
Scotland. The students have turned excuses given to TV licensing staff | :14:55. | :15:00.
into an animation as part of a UK wide competition. | :15:01. | :15:03.
Whether through accident, illness or maybe war injury, | :15:04. | :15:05.
a significant number of people are without one or more | :15:06. | :15:08.
Amputees often turn to sport to help heal physical and mental scars. | :15:09. | :15:16.
If you only have one leg, football isn't perhaps the most | :15:17. | :15:19.
obvious choice but, as Willie Johnston found out, | :15:20. | :15:21.
an amputee version of the game does exist, and it's about to come | :15:22. | :15:24.
No quarter asked and none given. They may be on crutches but mobility | :15:25. | :15:37.
is not an issue. Neither is at ability. Brianna Murray lost his leg | :15:38. | :15:41.
to cancer when he was ten. Only recently did he rediscover the | :15:42. | :15:56.
game he loved. He contacted his nearest club, Everton, and plays for | :15:57. | :16:01.
them. At the age of 406I did not think I would be playing football | :16:02. | :16:06.
again. It takes a lot out of you. But it is all worth it. It is a long | :16:07. | :16:12.
way from his home to games like this. | :16:13. | :16:20.
It is even further than this player. He was co-opted for Manchester City | :16:21. | :16:32.
to make up the numbers. There are no concessions. There are not any. | :16:33. | :16:37.
Taken some saw once? Yes, it is very rough. Five amputee teams are linked | :16:38. | :16:46.
to clubs in England but none in Scotland. To try and change that, | :16:47. | :16:50.
Everton are staging an awareness they at Annan Athletic as well as | :16:51. | :17:00.
the Scottish born coach of the British team. There are thousands of | :17:01. | :17:03.
people out there who love football, have lost a limb, one thing has led | :17:04. | :17:08.
to another, there is huge scope for people in. The open day is this | :17:09. | :17:21.
Saturday. They hope to stage another in Glasgow later in the year. More | :17:22. | :17:34.
sport now. Alastair Kellock says Fearne Cotton's men must attack to | :17:35. | :17:37.
produce try storing opportunities. Scotland's defeat by England | :17:38. | :17:40.
on Saturday was their eighth loss in a row in the Six Nations - | :17:41. | :17:43.
thats their worst ever run This is exactly the start Scotland | :17:44. | :18:05.
hoped to avoid. The loss of an early try in the opening game against | :18:06. | :18:11.
England. But Scotland did manage to create chances. But they were | :18:12. | :18:17.
chances they did not manage to convert into tries. | :18:18. | :18:25.
Scotland will want Stuart Hogg on the ball. He is dangerous, fences | :18:26. | :18:34.
struggle to deal with the M. -- with them. I believe Scotland are best | :18:35. | :18:40.
when attacking. Sometimes they are a little bit unstructured but it | :18:41. | :18:43.
brings out the best and we scored tries. What did the coaching team | :18:44. | :18:49.
have to say? I think we are aware that we are frustrated with the | :18:50. | :18:56.
outcome of the game, we felt we had a few opportunities. In a 6-point | :18:57. | :19:05.
game it comes down to fine margins. Next up, it is Wales. For Scotland, | :19:06. | :19:18.
the losing feeling is an emotion they will be desperate to ditch. You | :19:19. | :19:27.

for the 28 year old kicker He narrowly missed this 44 yards | :19:53. | :19:58.

Commonwealth Games medallists in judo has won bronze | :20:07. | :20:14.
at the prestigious Paris Grand Slam. The 29 year old did not have | :20:15. | :20:18.
to fight her last two rounds because of opponent injury | :20:19. | :20:23.
and disqualification. She still had to present herself | :20:24. | :20:26.
for the fight and perform the customary bows - | :20:27. | :20:29.
despite no opponent being present. I got quite nervous before I went | :20:30. | :20:43.
on, I thought, do not fall over. To do it twice in one day is strange. | :20:44. | :20:48.
When you win a medal you are usually excited and happy. I will take the | :20:49. | :20:56.
medal but it is different. The draft of the quarterfinal stage of the | :20:57. | :21:00.
Scottish Cup has been taking place or at least it was meant to be. Our | :21:01. | :21:06.
reporter is at the National Stadium. Can you explain what has happened? | :21:07. | :21:17.
I'm not sure I can. It has been very exciting here. A ball malfunction | :21:18. | :21:29.
has seen the draw made void. There was a problem with the balls in the | :21:30. | :21:33.
container. These blue plastic shells which contain the notes of the | :21:34. | :21:40.
teams, one of them had split open and they only discovered this midway | :21:41. | :21:44.
through the draw. There was the rather embarrassing situation where | :21:45. | :21:49.
they had to abort the draw and start all over again. That delayed matters | :21:50. | :21:54.
for several minutes and it left people at the SFA with egg on their | :21:55. | :21:58.
faces. They eventually got the draw done. We can show you it now. | :21:59. | :22:05.
Basically, Heart of Midlothian author Bernie and are at home to | :22:06. | :22:11.
Inverness. Celtic are at home to Morton. Ross County play Dundee | :22:12. | :22:15.
United and the winner of Rangers or kill Marnoch will take on the winner | :22:16. | :22:20.
of Dumbarton or Dundee. Those games will be played on the fifth and 6th | :22:21. | :22:27.
of March. We eventually got there. I'm joined by Leigh Griffiths. | :22:28. | :22:31.
You've got Martin at home. I'm guessing you're happy with that. -- | :22:32. | :22:38.
Greenock Morton at home. Yes, at first we got an away game against | :22:39. | :22:42.
Dundee United. Greenock Morton will come to Celtic Park with confidence | :22:43. | :22:46.
from the last game they are, they won. We will need to win this time. | :22:47. | :22:53.
In the draw, Celtic were drawn away to Dundee United. If they had been | :22:54. | :22:59.
drawn with Rangers, the conspiracy theorists would have come out. | :23:00. | :23:04.
Definitely, but we've got a home game and we will look forward to it. | :23:05. | :23:08.
It was a tricky game against East Kilbride, you scored the goal of | :23:09. | :23:13.
your hand but you made it through. What is the feeling in the camp? Not | :23:14. | :23:22.
the most inspiring victory. We came off the back of two Mac defeats. We | :23:23. | :23:32.
will have a good or week of training, play bass county on | :23:33. | :23:39.
Saturday. Thank you. I think Leigh Griffiths has summed it up. | :23:40. | :23:43.
Headlines are written. It has been a bad draw from an operational point | :23:44. | :23:47.
of view but at least we know which fixtures will be in the quarterfinal | :23:48. | :23:50.
of the Scottish Cup. Thank you very much. | :23:51. | :23:55.
So many things to say. We should avoid them all. | :23:56. | :23:59.
You might think your dog is a pretty clever boy, | :24:00. | :24:01.
or girl, but now you can prove it using a new canine IQ test. | :24:02. | :24:05.
A team based at Edinburgh University have helped trial the test on Border | :24:06. | :24:08.
The point of the exercise - apparently - is that it | :24:09. | :24:12.
could help our understanding of the link between human | :24:13. | :24:14.
This full bull dog food. This is a snack sized portion. -- full plates. | :24:15. | :24:35.
This is the sort of experiment you might want to try. If it chooses the | :24:36. | :24:39.
bigger portion it is more intelligent. This four-year-old | :24:40. | :24:50.
lacked labrador, I'm not sure what the test told you about his IQ but | :24:51. | :24:56.
the scientists say it could have implications for human health. | :24:57. | :24:59.
Research suggests brighter humans tend to live longer. The scientists | :25:00. | :25:05.
hope to show this in dogs and it could help our understanding of | :25:06. | :25:10.
conditions like dementia. Dogs acquire some of the key | :25:11. | :25:14.
characteristics we think by studying them we could get a lifetime's worth | :25:15. | :25:21.
of data in 17 years, which is very quick compared to humans. Away from | :25:22. | :25:31.
the science, at the dog's trust, we know a thing or two about them and | :25:32. | :25:36.
what makes them tick. A smart hound is not for everyone. People are | :25:37. | :25:39.
looking for a huge variety of things, we certainly have dogs that | :25:40. | :25:45.
are very intelligent but a lot of people enjoy the company of silly | :25:46. | :25:49.
dogs that just want to play and there is nothing wrong with that. On | :25:50. | :25:55.
the Hill, owners think comparing dog and human intelligence makes perfect | :25:56. | :26:01.
sense. I think we share some characteristics. I am quite stubborn | :26:02. | :26:07.
as well. One of them was lovely but as thick as two Mac short planks. | :26:08. | :26:14.
Another one is just wonderful. How about the ultimate IQ test? What | :26:15. | :26:20.
human would want to be out in this weather? It is obvious who is taking | :26:21. | :26:28.
the lead. Now the weather. For once, all the drama was so from the | :26:29. | :26:32.
border. These tranquil shots sent in by our weather watcher with the | :26:33. | :26:39.
message that not everyone is suffering from the raft of the | :26:40. | :26:43.
storm. The heaviest is reserved for England and Wales. It has been | :26:44. | :26:47.
pretty windy across the Solway coast. We will see this pushing in. | :26:48. | :26:51.
Some of that will be on the heavy side. Further north, largely dry, | :26:52. | :26:57.
scattering of showers. The clearest skies will be in the north-east and | :26:58. | :27:01.
the temperatures will drop as low as minus three. We start the day with | :27:02. | :27:10.
the north-south split, it is wet from the Central Belt southwards. | :27:11. | :27:15.
Across the North, there is a reversal of fortunes. We lose a lot | :27:16. | :27:19.
of the sunshine at the cloud filters in. By 3pm the rain will linger on | :27:20. | :27:26.
but it will be gone by this stage, skies will be brightening. This band | :27:27. | :27:36.
of showers affecting the Western Isles, the Moray coast as well as | :27:37. | :27:41.
the Northern Isles. The wind will move into the North and | :27:42. | :27:48.
strengthened. Some sleet on lower levels. Tomorrow evening, that band | :27:49. | :27:52.
of showery weather sinks southwards and most places turn drive. For | :27:53. | :27:59.
Wednesday, quite a lot of dry weather but the wind will come | :28:00. | :28:05.
straight down from the North. Still will be a few showers. Some further | :28:06. | :28:12.
south but for central and southern Scotland there will be a lot of dry | :28:13. | :28:17.
and bright weather. It will feel chilly. It will be breezy around the | :28:18. | :28:21.
coast. Thursday will be colder still. The rest of the sunshine in | :28:22. | :28:27. |
