That's all from the BBC News at Six, so it's goodbye from me,

:00:00.:00:00.

and on BBC One we now join the BBC's news teams where you are.

:00:00.:00:09.

Keeping the lights on - extending the life of an aging

:00:10.:00:13.

Beaton I will be reporting from Torness on the day that EDF energy

:00:14.:00:25.

says it displays will keep powering Scotland until at least 2030.

:00:26.:00:30.

Also on the programme, the search for two experienced

:00:31.:00:32.

Robbery and violence - everyday risks facing

:00:33.:00:35.

How much does it cost to bring up baby?

:00:36.:00:39.

And, no-one's at Ayr today for the glorious weather,

:00:40.:00:46.

but attendance at Scotland's racecourses is up.

:00:47.:01:03.

Scotland's biggest nuclear power station at Torness in

:01:04.:01:08.

East Lothian is to continue operating until 2030,

:01:09.:01:11.

The plant's owner, the French energy giant EDF, says the decision follows

:01:12.:01:16.

"extensive technical and safety reviews".

:01:17.:01:20.

The company says it's also extending the life of three other nuclear

:01:21.:01:23.

Here's our environment correspondent, David Miller.

:01:24.:01:33.

Torness, a familiar landmark on the East Lothian coastline, built in the

:01:34.:01:43.

1980s amid huge controversy. The Prime Minister was greeted by a

:01:44.:01:47.

throng of protesters... But at the opening, Margaret Thatcher insisted

:01:48.:01:52.

the station would be good for the environment, helping to cut

:01:53.:01:56.

greenhouse gas emissions. This is reactor one at Torness, which has

:01:57.:02:02.

been powering Scottish homes and businesses since 1989. We now know

:02:03.:02:06.

that it will continue to generate electricity until at least 2030. And

:02:07.:02:13.

despite the age of the plant, tosses here insist that can be done safely

:02:14.:02:22.

-- parsers. In the west of Scotland, Hunterston has already had its life

:02:23.:02:29.

extended until 2016 and most recently until 2023. In the East,

:02:30.:02:33.

Torness will operate for an additional seven years and it is now

:02:34.:02:39.

due to be decommissioned in 2030. We provide around a quarter of

:02:40.:02:46.

Scotland's and we generate all day everyday. We have regulators in

:02:47.:02:51.

place for nuclear safety and security and environment and they

:02:52.:02:56.

rightly spend a lot of time overseeing our activities. For a new

:02:57.:03:01.

generation of engineers the news has broad long-term job security. How

:03:02.:03:06.

are you getting on? With the guaranteed a well paid highly

:03:07.:03:14.

skilled job in Scotland. I can stay in Scotland where I have been

:03:15.:03:17.

brought up and I don't have to start looking elsewhere around the country

:03:18.:03:22.

because I still have that extra 14 years. Climate change means

:03:23.:03:28.

Scotland's focus is increasingly on sources of renewable energy but

:03:29.:03:33.

industry experts say nuclear still has a vital role to play, providing

:03:34.:03:38.

a reliable low-carbon source of power. More than a third of our

:03:39.:03:42.

electricity comes from the two nuclear power stations we have and

:03:43.:03:51.

as the wind varies, we have that bedrock of low-carbon generation

:03:52.:03:56.

from nuclear sources. The Scottish Government is opposed to the

:03:57.:04:00.

construction of new nuclear plants but said it supports life extensions

:04:01.:04:09.

for existing power stations. But critics argue the end of the nuclear

:04:10.:04:15.

era in Scotland is now long overdue. It is a private corporation saying

:04:16.:04:19.

that for another seven years we will be investing in nuclear and that

:04:20.:04:24.

kicks the decision about investing in renewables into the long grass.

:04:25.:04:28.

Despite the protests it is now clear it will be many years yet before the

:04:29.:04:33.

sun sets on Scotland's nuclear-power industry.

:04:34.:04:35.

The search for two young climbers missing on Ben Nevis has had to be

:04:36.:04:39.

suspended because of poor weather conditions.

:04:40.:04:40.

Rachel Slater and Tim Newton were last seen at the weekend

:04:41.:04:43.

but the alarm was raised after they failed to return

:04:44.:04:45.

The Lochaber mountain rescue team have found their tent close

:04:46.:04:51.

to a mountain but there was no sign of the couple.

:04:52.:04:54.

Tim Newton and Rachel Slater, together on top of Ben Nevis on a

:04:55.:05:03.

happy day out in the hills. The picture could not be more different

:05:04.:05:09.

this evening as fears grow for the safety of the two experienced

:05:10.:05:12.

climbers from Bradford. They had been camping below the North face of

:05:13.:05:16.

the mountain at the weekend but a search was launched after they

:05:17.:05:19.

failed to return and to their abandoned tent. We know they were

:05:20.:05:25.

camping, we have got their tent and their car was here so they were on

:05:26.:05:28.

Ben Nevis but they have not left any word of what they were going for and

:05:29.:05:32.

it is a very big mountain when you don't know where to look. The

:05:33.:05:35.

conditions have been so extreme today that over 30 members of

:05:36.:05:41.

Lochaber Mountain rescue team had to go up the mountain on foot because

:05:42.:05:46.

it was too windy for the helicopter but the search was suspended this

:05:47.:05:49.

afternoon after they were beaten back by 90 mph winds and a small

:05:50.:05:55.

avalanche which narrowly missed two of their team. We still looking in

:05:56.:06:03.

the area but we had some big snow slides and two of the boys got

:06:04.:06:07.

caught in an avalanche, they were OK, they walked away but it did

:06:08.:06:13.

scare them. There are fears that the pair, who had been seen by other

:06:14.:06:17.

climbers, could have been hit by an avalanche but rescue services are

:06:18.:06:22.

not giving up. A couple of very experienced climbers and information

:06:23.:06:25.

has come in from people who believe they might have seen them and all

:06:26.:06:28.

light of inquiry will be followed up. The search is due to resume

:06:29.:06:33.

tomorrow but with gale force winds and more snow forecast it is feared

:06:34.:06:38.

that the desperate efforts to find the young couple could be hampered

:06:39.:06:39.

further. A five-month-old baby girl has

:06:40.:06:44.

suffered life-threatening injuries Emergency services were called

:06:45.:06:45.

to an address in Leven on Sunday afternoon following a report

:06:46.:06:51.

of concern for a child. The baby was taken to

:06:52.:06:55.

the Royal Hospital for Sick Children in Edinburgh where she remains

:06:56.:06:57.

in a critical condition. They're the small grocer shops

:06:58.:06:59.

characterised in the comedy Open All Hours, but the reality

:07:00.:07:07.

of working behind the counter Over 90% of local shops questioned

:07:08.:07:10.

in a survey of Scottish grocers said they'd been victim

:07:11.:07:16.

of theft last year - Catriona Renton has met one

:07:17.:07:18.

shopkeeper who was attacked On the 3rd of January, Mohammed was

:07:19.:07:36.

working alone in this shop when he was attacked. We have paused the

:07:37.:07:39.

pictures as some people might find them upsetting. He crept up and

:07:40.:07:46.

smashed on my face and started punching for no reason and after

:07:47.:07:52.

that I realised, where in blood was everywhere, the grabbed the till and

:07:53.:07:56.

walked away without taking anything. I had three fractures on my

:07:57.:08:02.

cheekbone, one on my nose, they are going to replace it now. He has been

:08:03.:08:07.

off work on and off ever since and the experience has it affected him

:08:08.:08:13.

and his family. My confidence has been totally shaken, I come back and

:08:14.:08:18.

I feel the same thing, the after-shock of the flashes coming

:08:19.:08:22.

and I can't take it any more. The attacker did not take anything. 92%

:08:23.:08:28.

of the 200 or so retailers who were surveyed say they were stolen from

:08:29.:08:34.

in 2015 and they say the majority of abusive and threatening incidents

:08:35.:08:38.

against staff happened when customers were refused a sale or

:08:39.:08:44.

were asked to show ID. Today he is spending -- attending a seminar held

:08:45.:08:48.

by the organisation who compiled the survey and it Chief Executive also

:08:49.:08:53.

works in retail and he is today launched a charter for save the

:08:54.:08:59.

business. I have been spat on, caused all -- called all sorts of

:09:00.:09:04.

horrible names, threatened with violence and it is these issues that

:09:05.:09:11.

are facing the retailers every day. We feel that it is time for a

:09:12.:09:17.

change. The first thing anybody in that position should do is to keep

:09:18.:09:21.

themselves safe and keep on line to the police at time will stop if they

:09:22.:09:26.

are in their shop, and we talk about people working on their own, it is

:09:27.:09:30.

important they look after themselves and I would say that they are far

:09:31.:09:34.

better withdrawing from a confrontational position because

:09:35.:09:38.

what is in the shop is material goods. Ali says he does not want

:09:39.:09:43.

this to happen to anybody else. Police enquiries are continuing into

:09:44.:09:45.

his case. Still to come on

:09:46.:09:47.

tonight's programme... A charity's fears over what they say

:09:48.:09:51.

is a "generational gulf" between the housing

:09:52.:09:56.

haves and have-nots. In sport a big night ahead

:09:57.:09:59.

with the Edinburgh derby. We chase down Celtic's

:10:00.:10:02.

latest signing target. And despite the weather,

:10:03.:10:03.

numbers are up at the races. A 13% rise enjoying days out

:10:04.:10:07.

at Scotlands five courses. The cost of raising

:10:08.:10:09.

a child in Scotland - from birth to the age of 21 -

:10:10.:10:21.

has risen to more than ?230,000. That's according to a report

:10:22.:10:25.

by a financial services company. A third of the cost is spent

:10:26.:10:29.

on childcare with another If you're a parent, they are the

:10:30.:10:43.

centre of your world but there is no doubt it can be expensive bringing

:10:44.:10:47.

up a child. It is half term and families are at the science Centre

:10:48.:10:52.

in Glasgow. Trips, lunches, clothes, activities, they all add up. The

:10:53.:10:56.

report to date is the cost of bringing up a child in Scotland from

:10:57.:11:03.

birth to 21 is over ?230,000. Compare that to the average house

:11:04.:11:07.

price here which is just over ?165,000. The cost of childcare and

:11:08.:11:13.

baby-sitting takes up around a third of the money spent on raising a

:11:14.:11:18.

child. In Scotland that is over ?69,000 from birth to 21. I asked

:11:19.:11:24.

this mother if childcare was so expensive that she had to stay home.

:11:25.:11:29.

Our parents aren't local, I live in a rural area so to put fuel on the

:11:30.:11:35.

car and go into the city is not financially viable. There is a lot

:11:36.:11:39.

of non-essential stuff as well, rugby, piano lessons, they cost just

:11:40.:11:47.

over ?8,000. They can do soft play stuff or the science centre, going

:11:48.:11:52.

out for lunch, the clubs at school, football or gymnastics or ballet.

:11:53.:11:57.

You feel you are always shelling out? I have three children so yes,

:11:58.:12:02.

constantly. It seems children appreciate it. I like badminton and

:12:03.:12:08.

basketball and football. I like them. And do you appreciate your mum

:12:09.:12:15.

and dad? A little bit. Scots are known for their generosity and we

:12:16.:12:18.

give the most pocket money than any other part of the UK apart from

:12:19.:12:26.

London. I work overseas, I come home and they are more happy to see my

:12:27.:12:31.

wallet than me! What do you pay in pocket money? Sometimes it is just

:12:32.:12:35.

taking them out for entertainment. They start as bundles of joy but

:12:36.:12:38.

prepared to spend bundles. Solid fuel supplier

their property in Glasgow but when it comes to buying a flat, he is

frustrated that the sums don't add up. By the time we had the deposit

we needed, house prices will have gone up and we will need even more

:14:06.:14:13.

a generational golf between haves and have-nots, just one strand in a

:14:14.:14:19.

wider housing crisis. The numbers speak for themselves, 150,000 people

:14:20.:14:24.

on waiting lists, Eddie 6000 people in Scotland applied as homeless last

:14:25.:14:30.

year, 10,500 families in temper a accommodation and 5000 children

:14:31.:14:32.

tonight will be in temporary accommodation without somewhere to

:14:33.:14:37.

call home. That is a crisis by any stretch of the imagination. With the

:14:38.:14:42.

demand for housing set to grow, Shelter have published what they are

:14:43.:14:46.

calling their manifesto for homes, and a key plank of the document is a

:14:47.:14:50.

call to build many more affordable homes for people to buy or rent like

:14:51.:14:54.

the ones taking shape here in Edinburgh. They want the next

:14:55.:15:00.

Scottish devilment to commit to building 12,000 affordable

:15:01.:15:03.

properties a year for five years, not an entirely straightforward

:15:04.:15:08.

proposition. What we saw with the recession is that a lot of builders

:15:09.:15:11.

went out of business so there are fewer competitors able to deliver

:15:12.:15:15.

and there is also a skill shortage in the constructive industry so

:15:16.:15:20.

there is a lack of capacity -- construction industry. Also the

:15:21.:15:24.

planning system can sometimes slow down development. In this

:15:25.:15:28.

Parliament, the Scottish Government say they have exceeded their

:15:29.:15:33.

affordable housing targets, investing ?1.7 billion. With an

:15:34.:15:36.

election on the horizon, the discussion around Scottish

:15:37.:15:40.

relationship with bricks and mortar has fresh impetus.

:15:41.:15:43.

A look at other stories from across the country.

:15:44.:15:46.

A 25-year-old man has been arrested and charged in connection

:15:47.:15:49.

with the death of a woman whose body was found in a flat

:15:50.:15:52.

An investigation was launched after her body was found on Friday.

:15:53.:15:58.

Campaigners against controversial plans for a 109-mile line

:15:59.:16:01.

of 50-metre high super-pylons across Dumfries and Galloway have

:16:02.:16:04.

Dumgal Against Pylons claim their proposal would meet

:16:05.:16:14.

Police in Dumfries and Galloway are warning teenagers to stay safe

:16:19.:16:23.

online after several young girls shared risque photographs

:16:24.:16:25.

with people they met over the internet.

:16:26.:16:30.

Some of the girls were blackmailed for money and told the pictures

:16:31.:16:33.

would be sent to friends if they didn't pay.

:16:34.:16:35.

One high school has sent letters to parents warning

:16:36.:16:38.

that their children could be targeted.

:16:39.:16:41.

The Director of Edinburgh's Hogmanay event is to stand down after two

:16:42.:16:44.

Pete Irvine formed Unique Events in 1992.

:16:45.:16:48.

He then became involved in creating a winter festival to celebrate

:16:49.:16:51.

The festival brings over 100,000 visitors to the capital over

Scotland's beaver population may help prevent flooding,

:16:57.:17:02.

according to a study by researchers at Stirling University.

:17:03.:17:05.

Some locals believe the rodents living along the River Tay

:17:06.:17:07.

contributed to flooding in the Perthshire village of Alyth.

:17:08.:17:11.

But the scientists say the beaver dams helped reduce the effects

:17:12.:17:14.

by storing and then slowly releasing water.

:17:15.:17:19.

A woman from the north of Scotland has won ?2.5 million

The same woman also won ?30,000 in another online game

Bookmaker William Hill believes her windfall is the biggest

:17:29.:17:33.

The stakes are high in Edinburgh tonight, aren't they? They certainly

:17:34.:17:48.

are. They play in different leagues,

:17:49.:17:53.

but the second Edinburgh derby in nine days takes place

:17:54.:17:55.

at Easter Road tonight. The Scottish Cup tie

in the quarter-finals. COMMENTATOR: To curl this in towards

goal. A good save. It's in the net! Unbelievable. It was the goal that

:18:14.:18:22.

earned Hibs a replay against Hearts after coming back from two goals

:18:23.:18:28.

down at half time. We need to enjoy it. It's a fantastic occasion. It's

:18:29.:18:36.

a showcase game again. Full house. It will be an unbelievable

:18:37.:18:40.

atmosphere in the stadium tomorrow. We are hoping that we're the team ha

:18:41.:18:45.

comes out on top. It will be good to go to Easter Road. It can work for

:18:46.:18:51.

you or against you. If you start well and get ahead the crowd can

:18:52.:18:55.

turn and make it difficult for Hibs. If they get a good start it makes it

:18:56.:18:58.

difficult for us. It works both ways. It's one the players are

:18:59.:19:03.

looking forward to. Three of the last four Edinburgh derbies ended as

:19:04.:19:07.

draws. One thing about this evening, we are quaranteed a winner. It may

:19:08.:19:13.

take extra time, it may even take a penalty shoot-out. For the visitors

:19:14.:19:17.

to the capital they say that's the ideal way to finish the game. I

:19:18.:19:24.

think they tried Golden Gold goal. Penalty shoot-out is Hard way to

:19:25.:19:28.

fair. Lose. A great way to win. Dramatic way of finishing it. The

:19:29.:19:34.

modern way of finishing it. The sold-out signs are up ensuring a

:19:35.:19:39.

capacity crowd, all desperate for their team to triumph in what should

:19:40.:19:44.

be a dramatic, and maybe a long evening.

:19:45.:19:48.

Another replay tonight, Kilmarnock and Rangers battle it out

:19:49.:19:50.

for a quarter-final place against Dundee or Dumbarton.

:19:51.:19:52.

Killie assistant manager, Lee McCulloch, will oversee

:19:53.:19:55.

tonight's game with their new boss, Lee Clark, watching from the stand.

:19:56.:19:58.

Clark says lessons can be learned from the Ibrox clash.

:19:59.:20:02.

I watched the game. I was impressed by that. To win the game in the

:20:03.:20:09.

final third we need to be more productive from there. That is what

:20:10.:20:12.

Lee and Peter will be stressing to the players anyway. To go and enjoy

:20:13.:20:19.

it. Enjoy the occasion. It's a fantastic opportunity. A great

:20:20.:20:23.

crowd. Good atmosphere and for our young players to go and continue

:20:24.:20:26.

their good performances they had in the last couple of games.

:20:27.:20:31.

The Radio Scotland Sportsound team are already on air building up

:20:32.:20:34.

to live commentary of Hibs v Hearts on 810 medium wave and digital.

:20:35.:20:37.

With updates from the Kilmarnock Rangers Cup replay and Motherwell

:20:38.:20:40.

against Dundee United in the Premiership.

:20:41.:20:44.

Norwegian midfielder, Kristoffer Ajer, has arrived

:20:45.:20:45.

in Glasgow for signing talks with Celtic.

:20:46.:20:47.

The 17-year-old is currently with Start in Norway,

:20:48.:20:49.

but spent a week on trial at Celtic last month.

:20:50.:20:52.

He flew in from a training camp in sunny Spain to be greeted

:20:53.:20:55.

Ajer will undergo a medical and discuss personal terms

:20:56.:20:59.

You must be happy to be here in Glasgow? Yeah, I'm really happy. I

enjoyed last time. Yeah. How does it feel to be coming to have talks with

:21:11.:21:15.

Celtic, such a big club? It's a big club. We will see what will happen.

:21:16.:21:21.

Tomorrow I'll talk more. So, we'll see. You like the weather here? I

:21:22.:21:25.

love it. I'm from Norway, so no problem. Thanks! Yeah, right!

:21:26.:21:32.

More and more people are enjoying a day at the races.

:21:33.:21:34.

That's according to Scottish Racing who run the five racecourses in this

:21:35.:21:37.

country - Ayr, Hamilton, Kelso, Musselburgh and Perth.

:21:38.:21:39.

The number of spectators has risen by more than 13%

:21:40.:21:42.

We sent John Barnes to Ayr races to find out.

:21:43.:21:51.

It wasn't only exhausted horses getting a soaking today, the punters

:21:52.:21:58.

were too. Despite the weather, they are still turning up in their

:21:59.:22:02.

numbers. The total attendance figures for the five Scottish

:22:03.:22:07.

courses last year was over 308,000. As far as the prize money on offer

:22:08.:22:14.

for the racehorse owners ?#6. 6. 7 million. The Scottish economy

:22:15.:22:20.

benefitted to the tune of ?173 million from Scottish racing. What's

:22:21.:22:24.

the secret to Scottish racing success? I think what we are

:22:25.:22:29.

offering is, one, good quality racing in Scotland. We have very

:22:30.:22:33.

good horses. It's exciting. I think you can also have, you know,

:22:34.:22:39.

husbands and wives, families can all come together and, unlike the

:22:40.:22:43.

football, we tend to be open towards family entertainment. They have a

:22:44.:22:47.

great team behind them most of the tracks in Scotland thech are working

:22:54.:22:56.

here. The bookies are usually laughing, what's the attraction for

:22:57.:23:00.

the punters? You meet really nice people at races. All sorts. A good

:23:01.:23:05.

family day out. The facilities at these racecourses are better than

:23:06.:23:09.

they used to be too. It's a big improvement and encouragement. I

:23:10.:23:14.

like horses, but the main reason is, I'm here to win money. You can do

:23:15.:23:19.

that while weathering a storm outside or relaxing inside in the

warmth of the lounges. There are positive signs on the road

1966 was Walter McGowan's year. There's the bell. There's the bell.

who has passed away. Now, here's David Henderson

Britain's place in Europe. And, it costs more than ?200,000 to raise a

at 10.30pm tonight. Now, there's a question.

:25:10.:25:11.

Let's see what the weather has in store and it's

:25:12.:25:13.

This weather Watcher watched the weather from indoors. This evening

:25:14.:25:23.

and tonight the wet and windy weather continues. Dryer conditions,

:25:24.:25:29.

drying to the north-west, gale force here. Wet for the central belt and

:25:30.:25:34.

south. If we pull out and look you can see the band of rain sandwiched

:25:35.:25:38.

between cold air ahead of it and behind it. Overnight that cold air

:25:39.:25:43.

behind it digging in. Likely to see some snow at times. A yellow be

:25:44.:25:48.

aware warning in force. You can see as we head through the early hours

:25:49.:25:52.

the rain turning to sleet and snow. Perhaps even a dusting to low levels

:25:53.:25:58.

as well. On higher ground several centimetres. Something to bear in

:25:59.:26:03.

mind for tomorrow morning's commute. Through the course of Wednesday it

:26:04.:26:06.

will improve. A line of wintry showers pushing in through the

:26:07.:26:11.

Highlands and Islands. By mid afternoon dryer for all. P. Chilly,

:26:12.:26:20.

five Celsius, cloudy. Further west some sunshine coming through here.

:26:21.:26:25.

It should brighten up through Angus and the far north later on. The rain

:26:26.:26:30.

will take a while to clear away from Shetland. The rest of the afternoon

:26:31.:26:33.

into the evening and wintry showers pushing in towards the north-west.

:26:34.:26:37.

Elsewhere, dry, clear and cold. Perhaps a touch of ice to western

:26:38.:26:42.

parts, too. Thursday, the weather front responsible for the rain we

:26:43.:26:46.

are seeing now clipping East Anglia, dryer weather behind it, although

:26:47.:26:50.

Friday's weather on the horizon. Thursday in more detail. Generally,

:26:51.:26:54.

bright with a few light showers across the west and north-west. The

:26:55.:26:58.

best of the sunshine in the east. Chilly, five to seven Celsius.

:26:59.:27:01.

Friday, that weather we saw earlier sweeping through, a wet day, windy

:27:02.:27:06.

as well. By the weekend yet more rain arriving particularly for

:27:07.:27:10.

western parts of the country. That's the forecast never end, isn't it,

:27:11.:27:13.

thank you, Christopher. Now, a reminder of

:27:14.:27:16.

tonight's main news. The Torness power station

:27:17.:27:18.

in East Lothian is to stay open until 2030, seven years beyond its

:27:19.:27:21.

previous decommissioning date. It's one of four of Britain's

:27:22.:27:23.

nuclear power plants to be given an extended lifeline

:27:24.:27:26.

beyond their scheduled closure. I'll be back with the headlines

:27:27.:27:30.

at 8.00pm and the late bulletin just Until then, from everyone

:27:31.:27:35.

on the team - right across the country -

:27:36.:27:38.

have a very good evening.
