That is all from Oz. Now it is time for the news for you.

:00:00.:00:00.

a rescue operation is under way after an avalanche in the Highlands.

:00:07.:00:11.

Two people have been flown to hospital.

:00:12.:00:13.

It comes as one walker dies and two others are rescued

:00:14.:00:16.

Also on the programme, a man who abducted and raped

:00:17.:00:21.

a 15-year-old girl on her way home from school is jailed.

:00:22.:00:25.

One in four Scots faces a mental-health problem every year.

:00:26.:00:30.

How new self-help courses might ease the strain on the NHS.

:00:31.:00:35.

Dundee United's chairman apologises for what he calls

:00:36.:00:38.

an abysmal performance against Motherwell.

:00:39.:00:47.

And George Bewley launches the Glasgow film festival, but sadly he

:00:48.:00:55.

is only on the big screen. -- George Clooney.

:00:56.:01:04.

It's been a day of drama and tragedy on Scotland's mountains.

:01:05.:01:08.

A hillwalker missing overnight with two companions in the

:01:09.:01:10.

A search for two young climbers on Ben Nevis was called off

:01:11.:01:20.

after the search and rescue helicopter was diverted

:01:21.:01:22.

to an avalanche in the Highlands near Spean Bridge.

:01:23.:01:24.

There, two climbers were rescued, and that operation is ongoing.

:01:25.:01:27.

Craig Anderson is near the scene, what can you tell us?

:01:28.:01:37.

Jackie, you can probably hear that there is still a search and rescue

:01:38.:01:45.

helicopter in the sky above us here, and dozens of members of more than

:01:46.:01:48.

one mountain rescue team have convened here as well. They are here

:01:49.:01:53.

waiting for word as to whether they have to set out this evening to see

:01:54.:01:59.

if there are more people in the avalanche on Creag Meagaidh, a very

:02:00.:02:02.

popular mountain for people to go climbing in at this time of year,

:02:03.:02:06.

with winter conditions, and today there were quite a few people on the

:02:07.:02:12.

mountain. What we understand is that several people saw the avalanche

:02:13.:02:16.

happened, they saw the debris of the avalanche, and they also saw

:02:17.:02:18.

belongings are people that had clearly been caught up in it. Two

:02:19.:02:24.

people, as far as we know, have been airlifted to the Belford Hospital in

:02:25.:02:28.

Fort William. Their conditions are not known, at least officially at

:02:29.:02:32.

the moment, although we understand one may well be serious. As I say,

:02:33.:02:36.

the members of the mountain rescue teams who are here are waiting to

:02:37.:02:39.

find out whether there is any likelihood that there will be more

:02:40.:02:50.

people up on the mountain, and they may have to go and do a search for

:02:51.:02:53.

them. Craig, you and that rescue helicopter were involved in a search

:02:54.:02:55.

for a couple missing on Ben Nevis, any word on that operation? No,

:02:56.:03:02.

well, Tim Newton, 27, and Rachel Slater, 24, both from Bradford in

:03:03.:03:09.

Yorkshire, they have been missing now, well, they were reported

:03:10.:03:13.

missing on Monday, but there has been no confirmed sighting of them

:03:14.:03:17.

since Sunday, or in fact since Saturday. They were believed to have

:03:18.:03:24.

been climbing Ben Nevis, both of them experienced mountaineers. Their

:03:25.:03:29.

tent was found, their car was found, and although it was too dangerous

:03:30.:03:34.

for the mountain rescue team to search for them this morning, this

:03:35.:03:38.

very same helicopter, as you say, was called in this afternoon. It

:03:39.:03:43.

made a brief search of the area before it was diverted here to Creag

:03:44.:03:48.

Meagaidh, but unfortunately no trace of them was found. I spoke to the

:03:49.:03:52.

leader of the Lochaber mountain rescue team a short time ago, and he

:03:53.:03:56.

said, of course there are always hopes, but clearly, as time goes on,

:03:57.:04:03.

those hopes, that optimism that they may be found safe and well starts to

:04:04.:04:05.

fade. Thank you very much. Earlier in the day, three hillwakers

:04:06.:04:08.

missing overnight in the Southern Uplands

:04:09.:04:10.

were found by search teams, but one of the men was pronounced

:04:11.:04:12.

dead in hospital. His two companions are being

:04:13.:04:14.

treated for hypothermia. An intensive search began last night

:04:15.:04:27.

when the three hikers failed to return from a planned walk in the

:04:28.:04:34.

hills near this village. They were named as Jeffrey Stewart, 74, George

:04:35.:04:41.

Crosbie, 73, and 64-year-old Bobby Thomson, or from Dumfries.

:04:42.:04:45.

Experienced hill walkers familiar with the area, we know they parked

:04:46.:04:49.

up here yesterday, the car is still here. They went for a walk and were

:04:50.:04:55.

expected to return around half past three, and they didn't. Added site,

:04:56.:05:02.

the surgeon involved police, four search and rescue teams and a

:05:03.:05:06.

coastguard helicopter. -- at its height, the surgeon involved. The

:05:07.:05:09.

guys were saying they could barely stand up on the hill visibility was

:05:10.:05:16.

very low, so searching was really difficult. The men had left no

:05:17.:05:21.

details of their intended route, and the search area was up to 40 square

:05:22.:05:27.

miles. News came through just after one o'clock that the coastguard

:05:28.:05:32.

helicopter had located the men in open countryside around four

:05:33.:05:36.

kilometres away. They were said to be in a poor condition. The crew

:05:37.:05:39.

took them on board and transferred them to hospital in Dumfries around

:05:40.:05:42.

20 miles away. It has since been confirmed that one of the men was

:05:43.:05:46.

pronounced dead at the hospital. The other two are being treated for

:05:47.:05:47.

hypothermia. A man who abducted and raped

:05:48.:05:54.

a 15-year-old girl on her way home from school in Dunfermline has

:05:55.:05:59.

been jailed. 26-year-old Mark Armstrong

:06:00.:06:01.

subjected her to a harrowing ordeal Mark Armstrong had spent the days

:06:02.:06:15.

beforehand robbing and assaulting women in Dunfermline town centre.

:06:16.:06:18.

Then on Thursday the 12th of March, he committed the crime that was

:06:19.:06:23.

today described as cruel, depraved and inhumane. He kidnapped the girl

:06:24.:06:27.

as she returned home from school, threatened her with a knife, forced

:06:28.:06:32.

into the grounds of a derelict cottage, and raped her. That and

:06:33.:06:37.

what followed shocked detectives with years of experience. Is

:06:38.:06:41.

horrific, what this 15-year-old girl has been subjected to. There is

:06:42.:06:46.

really nothing I can compare this to, it is worse than I have dealt

:06:47.:06:52.

with in my 22 years service. From the cottage, Armstrong marched his

:06:53.:06:56.

victim for miles, eventually ending up at his Dunfermline home, where

:06:57.:07:00.

the attacks continued. 26-year-old Armstrong only spoke to the girl to

:07:01.:07:05.

tell her what to do, to shut up, and to stop shivering. As night became

:07:06.:07:10.

day, there was another return trip to the cottage. Armstrong initially

:07:11.:07:15.

said he would let her go, a lie that lead to more abuse. He took her back

:07:16.:07:19.

to its home again, and then he made to walk around ten miles. Finally,

:07:20.:07:24.

in the early hours of the Saturday morning, the 32 two-hour ordeal

:07:25.:07:28.

ended here at the entrance to this country park. He had walked her

:07:29.:07:34.

here, given her her mobile phone and left. She called her mother, who

:07:35.:07:39.

came to get her. Police described the mother hugging her daughter. The

:07:40.:07:44.

girl was shaking, crying and occasionally howling. Today at the

:07:45.:07:49.

High Court in Glasgow, the judge handed mark Armstrong a lifelong

:07:50.:07:52.

restriction order and told him he will have to serve a minimum of four

:07:53.:07:57.

years in prison before he can be considered for release. There will

:07:58.:08:01.

be no assessment carried out and no consideration by the parole board

:08:02.:08:05.

for four years, but that does not mean he will be released in four

:08:06.:08:10.

years. The key element is the lifelong restriction. What that

:08:11.:08:13.

means is that mark Armstrong will remain under the supervision of the

:08:14.:08:17.

state for the rest of his life, and he will remain in custody until such

:08:18.:08:22.

time as it is assessed that he no longer presents a risk to the

:08:23.:08:28.

public. That may never happen. He already had a number of convictions

:08:29.:08:32.

for crimes of violence, and police say it is due to the courage and

:08:33.:08:36.

bravery of his 15-year-old victim that he is back in jail.

:08:37.:08:39.

You're watching Reporting Scotland from the BBC.

Glasgow Film Festival gets under way with the premiere of Hail, Caesar!

with George Clooney as a hapless Hollywood movie star.

:08:49.:08:53.

In sport, the premiership chairmen who is urging his players to redeem

:08:54.:08:59.

their professional reputation, the goals from two dramatic Scottish Cup

:09:00.:09:00.

ties, and more. If you go to your doctor with a mild

:09:01.:09:11.

mental illness, you might find yourself of them online self-help

:09:12.:09:14.

course while you wait to see a specialist. More than one in four of

:09:15.:09:19.

us experience a mental health problem every year, placing a huge

:09:20.:09:23.

strain on services. As part of a week of special reports, Eleanor

:09:24.:09:27.

Bradford has an analysis of the situation in Scotland.

:09:28.:09:29.

It's difficult to compare access to mental-health treatments

:09:30.:09:31.

We know that some people wait a long time in Scotland.

:09:32.:09:35.

One in five people wait longer than 18 weeks to see a psychologist.

:09:36.:09:38.

More than one in four children and adolescents

:09:39.:09:42.

wait longer than 18 weeks to see a specialist.

:09:43.:09:44.

Nearly everyone is seen within nine weeks.

:09:45.:09:49.

In Wales, in general, children wait much longer,

:09:50.:09:51.

In England, they've only just started to measure waits

:09:52.:09:56.

Across the UK, one in three GP appointments

:09:57.:10:02.

Health chiefs in Scotland are trying out online self-help courses

:10:03.:10:07.

for the most common complaints, anxiety and depression.

:10:08.:10:09.

Aileen was told she would have to wait six months to see a bereavement

:10:10.:10:23.

councillor. While she waited, the GP suggested she try out this online

:10:24.:10:28.

course. Basically, it was sitting in front of your laptop or your iPad,

:10:29.:10:34.

whatever, once a week with a cup of coffee, so I was a wee bit

:10:35.:10:38.

sceptical. I thought is this going to work or not? But I gave it a go,

:10:39.:10:45.

and I found it really good. The course is in cognitive behavioural

:10:46.:10:49.

therapy, which teachers coping strategies for life's difficulties.

:10:50.:10:53.

We have got a good team behind us, and that is why it is going so

:10:54.:10:57.

well... Professor Kevin Gallacher power is leading a trial of the

:10:58.:11:01.

causes in nearly half of Scottish health boards. Three times as many

:11:02.:11:04.

people as expected have signed up for them. Individuals can use it

:11:05.:11:10.

whenever they wish, late at night when the kids are in bed, and they

:11:11.:11:14.

can rehearse it again and go back to it for booster sessions at any time.

:11:15.:11:19.

So it is really user-friendly, it is there for them when they wanted. The

:11:20.:11:23.

courses have their critics. One study found that many people give up

:11:24.:11:28.

before competing them. Aileen admits she did not do it all but it is

:11:29.:11:31.

still the best treatment she has ever had. I noticed a difference

:11:32.:11:36.

even in my sleep patterns and the idea is that they gave you for

:11:37.:11:40.

dropping off to sleep. I tried some of those, and you could tell within

:11:41.:11:45.

a few days, you know, that it really worked.

:11:46.:11:46.

Online courses will never replace therapists,

:11:47.:11:48.

but it could cut down the number of sessions someone needs,

:11:49.:11:50.

which would cut waiting times for everyone.

:11:51.:11:52.

There's more encouraging news - the suicide rate is falling.

:11:53.:11:54.

Stigma around mental illness is reducing.

:11:55.:11:58.

A survey indicated that people living

:11:59.:12:00.

in Scotland and Northern Ireland are the most satisfied in the UK.

:12:01.:12:05.

And people in the Western Isles are the happiest of all.

:12:06.:12:11.

You can check out more facts and features in

:12:12.:12:14.

the special In The Mind section of the BBC website.

:12:15.:12:17.

The council that had hoped to put up the council tax has set its budget.

:12:18.:12:20.

Moray Council dropped the plan - so instead councillors have narrowly

:12:21.:12:24.

backed moves to put up the charges for some services instead.

:12:25.:12:27.

Meanwhile councils across Scotland are looking at cuts and savings -

:12:28.:12:30.

most are set to receive less from the Government

:12:31.:12:32.

Could this special bus service be under threat? These pensioners are

:12:33.:12:49.

worried about the future of their dial a bus service. It is really

:12:50.:12:55.

important, I would have to be in the house all the time, I would go mad

:12:56.:13:01.

if I had to do that. It is important for getting out and about. In

:13:02.:13:05.

Falkirk, the council has been debating how to sell ?25 million in

:13:06.:13:10.

the coming year. The money that helps pay for the service may go,

:13:11.:13:14.

and the dilemmas facing Falkirk are typical. For example, Angus Council

:13:15.:13:21.

is looking at cutting 170 jobs, and another, Argyll and Bute, is getting

:13:22.:13:24.

rid of librarians in secondary schools. One thing that nobody is

:13:25.:13:28.

doing is putting up the council tax. One council, an, had proposed an 18%

:13:29.:13:34.

rise, but the Government made it clear that any council that did so

:13:35.:13:39.

would lose millions. So today Moray chose other ways to balance its

:13:40.:13:42.

books. School dinner prices are going up, and so was the cost of

:13:43.:13:48.

music tuition. What it seems now is that local government is seen as a

:13:49.:13:53.

means of simply managing some central government ambition,

:13:54.:13:59.

diktats, call it what you will. The local SNP argued the council could

:14:00.:14:04.

save money in other ways. We have set out as a party various

:14:05.:14:08.

reductions to administrative costs across a range of services, and that

:14:09.:14:14.

protects front line services, we believe they could be management

:14:19.:14:21.

the council is discussing whether to look again at the bus service, and a

:14:22.:14:26.

decision is due any moment. Most other councils should set their

:14:27.:14:27.

budgets in the next few weeks. A look at other stories

Apologies aside if there was also criticism.

:19:24.:19:28.

been. The set play is so important in modern-day football. To switch

off is criminal. We need to dust ourselves down and go again. Two

:21:18.:21:20.

happy to go to the Olympics in Rio despite concerns over

:21:21.:21:22.

Muir is preparing to compete in this weekend's indoor international

:21:23.:21:26.

athletics meeting in Glasgow, and hopes to make the British team

:21:27.:21:28.

Organisers insist the outbreak of the mosquito-borne disease

:21:29.:21:31.

I trust that the British Olympic Association will keep us best

:21:32.:21:47.

informed. We might learn more things but now it will not stop you from

:21:48.:21:52.

going to Rio? Not at all. I will keep on training.

:21:53.:21:55.

Everything will be OK. That is the sport.

The 12th Glasgow Film Festival gets underway this evening,

:21:58.:22:00.

with the UK premiere of the film Hail, Caesar -

:22:01.:22:02.

which stars George Clooney as a hapless Hollywood movie star.

:22:03.:22:04.

It's one of a number of events, already sold out, before

:22:05.:22:07.

From the Glasgow film theatre, Pauline McLean reports.

:22:08.:22:14.

Guests are already arising tonight for the sold much anticipated UK

:22:15.:22:25.

premiere of Rasa. It stars George Clooney as a hapless Hollywood

:22:26.:22:34.

actor. -- Hail, Caesar!. It features Scarlett Johansson, Tilda Swinton

:22:35.:22:37.

and Joss Brolin. The festival directors are with me. You have not

:22:38.:22:43.

got George Clooney but quite a coup to have this film? We are absolutely

:22:44.:22:50.

thrilled. Who would not want a new film by the Coen brothers. It is

:22:51.:22:56.

nostalgic for the Hollywood studio era. But it has dark melancholy

:22:57.:23:01.

things that you would expect from a typical film by the Coen brothers.

:23:02.:23:07.

This festival though -- very much celebrating film fans? It is all

:23:08.:23:13.

about the audience. The audience may get better every year. It is great

:23:14.:23:16.

when you have guests. They are always warmly welcome. They are the

:23:17.:23:23.

icing on the cake. You have some pretty big names coming. You do not

:23:24.:23:26.

get much better than Richard Gere, who has chosen to bring his film.

:23:27.:23:32.

Richard Gere is coming for his film Time out of mind, which he also

:23:33.:23:37.

produced. It is a different film for him. He plays a homeless man in New

:23:38.:23:42.

York. It is how that whole problem of getting lost in a system that

:23:43.:23:46.

does not know how to help someone in his position. It is a film he cares

:23:47.:23:52.

very passionately about. He is passionate about the issue of

:23:53.:23:55.

homelessness. He will be working with the big issue in the UK. It is

:23:56.:24:02.

a bit more out of the usual in Glasgow. It is not just another

:24:03.:24:07.

London premiere. It is a good launch pad. The festival runs until

:24:08.:24:13.

February 28. Many events already sold out, many films already sold

:24:14.:24:15.

out. The advice is to book ahead. Now here's David Henderson

:24:16.:24:17.

with details of Scotland 2016. Tonight, does Scotland need to

:24:18.:24:27.

rethink the way it delivers health care? An expert report says complex

:24:28.:24:32.

operations needs to be done in specialist units. But does that

:24:33.:24:36.

leave any room for the local hospitals which were recently saved

:24:37.:24:42.

from closure? The full story at 10:30pm.

:24:43.:24:44.

:26:43.:26:48.

:26:49.:26:55.

That is it. I am back with the headlines at eight and the late
