including a first look at tomorrow's papers. Here,

:00:00.:00:15.

A hill walker and a climber have died in separate incidents

:00:16.:00:19.

The hill walker was one of three men missing overnight

:00:20.:00:23.

in the Southern Uplands while the climber was caught

:00:24.:00:25.

in an avalanche near Spean Bridge this afternoon.

:00:26.:00:28.

A young couple last seen at the weekend on Ben Nevis

:00:29.:00:31.

Our reporter, Craig Anderson, is in Fort William.

:00:32.:00:40.

The sad news tonight is that one man has died and another remains in

:00:41.:00:47.

hospital having been caught up in an avalanche on a popular mountain area

:00:48.:00:52.

between Spean Bridge and Newtonmore. The avalanche was seen by other

:00:53.:00:57.

climbers in the area and rescue teams and a coastguard helicopter

:00:58.:01:04.

was scrambled to the area. They were taken to hospital in Fort William

:01:05.:01:08.

were one of the men was pronounced dead. Both are believed not to be

:01:09.:01:14.

local to the area. The coastguard helicopter was in fact at the time

:01:15.:01:21.

looking for two other climbers who are missing an Ben Nevis, Tim Newton

:01:22.:01:26.

and Rachel Slater from the Bradford area. They have not been heard of

:01:27.:01:30.

since they set off to climb Ben Nevis at the weekend and fears are

:01:31.:01:35.

growing for their safety. Tonight it is understood that Rachel Slater's

:01:36.:01:39.

parents have arrived in the area to find out the latest in the search. A

:01:40.:01:44.

decision whether to resume that search will be taken tomorrow

:01:45.:01:47.

morning depending on weather conditions.

:01:48.:01:55.

An intensive search began last night when the three hikers failed

:01:56.:01:57.

to return from a planned walk in the hills near this village.

:01:58.:02:02.

They were named as Jeffrey Stewart, 74, George Crosbie, 73,

:02:03.:02:07.

and 64-year-old Bobby Thomson, or from Dumfries.

:02:08.:02:11.

Experienced hill walkers familiar with the area,

:02:12.:02:13.

we know they parked up here yesterday, the car

:02:14.:02:15.

They went for a walk and were expected to return around

:02:16.:02:21.

At its height, the search involved police, four search and rescue teams

:02:22.:02:28.

Conditions last night were described as appalling.

:02:29.:02:42.

The guys were saying they could barely stand up

:02:43.:02:44.

Visibility was very low, so searching was really difficult.

:02:45.:02:48.

The men had left no details of their intended route,

:02:49.:02:50.

and the search area was up to 40 square miles.

:02:51.:02:54.

News came through just after one o'clock that the coastguard

:02:55.:02:56.

helicopter had located the men in open countryside around

:02:57.:02:59.

They were said to be in a poor condition.

:03:00.:03:04.

The crew took them on board and transferred them to hospital

:03:05.:03:07.

It has since been confirmed that one of the men was pronounced

:03:08.:03:13.

The other two are being treated for hypothermia.

:03:14.:03:21.

A man who abducted and raped a 15-year-old girl on her way home

:03:22.:03:25.

from school in Dunfermline has been jailed.

:03:26.:03:27.

26-year-old Mark Armstrong subjected her to a harrowing ordeal

:03:28.:03:30.

Mark Armstrong had spent the days beforehand robbing and assaulting

:03:31.:03:38.

Then on Thursday the 12th of March, he committed the crime

:03:39.:03:46.

that was today described as cruel, depraved and inhumane.

:03:47.:03:50.

He kidnapped the girl as she returned home from school,

:03:51.:03:54.

threatened her with a knife, forced her onto the grounds

:03:55.:03:57.

of a derelict cottage, and raped her.

:03:58.:04:00.

That and what followed shocked detectives with years of experience.

:04:01.:04:05.

It's horrific, what this 15-year-old girl has been subjected to.

:04:06.:04:11.

There is really nothing I can compare this to,

:04:12.:04:13.

it is worse than I have dealt with in my 22 years' service.

:04:14.:04:16.

From the cottage, Armstrong marched his victim for miles,

:04:17.:04:20.

eventually ending up at his Dunfermline home,

:04:21.:04:23.

26-year-old Armstrong only spoke to the girl to tell her what to do,

:04:24.:04:30.

As night became day, there was another return

:04:31.:04:36.

Armstrong initially said he would let her go,

:04:37.:04:40.

He took her back to his home again, and then he made her walk

:04:41.:04:46.

Finally, in the early hours of the Saturday morning,

:04:47.:04:52.

the 32-hour ordeal ended here at the entrance

:04:53.:04:54.

He had walked her here, given her her mobile phone and left.

:04:55.:05:02.

She called her mother, who came to get her.

:05:03.:05:04.

Police described the mother hugging her daughter.

:05:05.:05:08.

The girl was shaking, crying and occasionally howling.

:05:09.:05:12.

Today at the High Court in Glasgow, the judge handed Mark Armstrong

:05:13.:05:17.

a lifelong restriction order and told him he will have to serve

:05:18.:05:20.

a minimum of four years in prison before he can be

:05:21.:05:23.

There will be no assessment carried out and no consideration

:05:24.:05:27.

by the parole board for four years, but that does not mean he will be

:05:28.:05:32.

The key element is the lifelong restriction.

:05:33.:05:38.

What that means is that Mark Armstrong will remain under

:05:39.:05:40.

the supervision of the state for the rest of his life,

:05:41.:05:44.

and he will remain in custody until such a time as it is assessed

:05:45.:05:48.

that he no longer presents a risk to the public.

:05:49.:05:51.

He already had a number of convictions for crimes

:05:52.:05:56.

of violence, and police say it is due to the courage and bravery

:05:57.:06:00.

of his 15-year-old victim that he is back in jail.

:06:01.:06:08.

A five-month-old baby girl from Levenmouth in Fife has died.

:06:09.:06:11.

Hayley Davidson died this afternoon in hospital in Edinburgh.

:06:12.:06:14.

She had been there since Sunday after police were called to a house

:06:15.:06:17.

in Buckhaven following a report of concern for a child.

:06:18.:06:22.

A man's appeared in court charged with murder after the death

:06:23.:06:25.

The body of 37-year-old Jessica McGraa was discovered

:06:26.:06:29.

at a flat on Union Terrace on Friday afternoon.

:06:30.:06:32.

Bala Chinda, who's 25, was charged with murder and theft.

:06:33.:06:36.

He made no plea and was remanded in custody.

:06:37.:06:41.

One person is believed to have died in a two-car crash in the Highlands.

:06:42.:06:44.

The collision happened this evening on the A836 near Thurso.

:06:45.:06:47.

Police say the road remains closed and local diversions are in place.

:06:48.:07:05.

The task force set up to minimise the effect of the closure

:07:06.:07:08.

of Texas Instruments in Greenock has met the American owners

:07:09.:07:10.

More than 350 jobs will be lost over the next three years if a buyer

:07:11.:07:14.

I am disappointed they have made the final decision to close the plant

:07:15.:07:20.

but we are very much committed to finding a prospective buyer. I think

:07:21.:07:25.

there's a clear commitment there to find a buyer.

:07:26.:07:29.

Several secondary schools in West Dunbartonshire will be

:07:30.:07:31.

closed tomorrow because of a teachers' strike.

:07:32.:07:32.

It's the second stoppage by the EIS in just over a month.

:07:33.:07:35.

The dispute is over plans to reduce the number of principal teachers.

:07:36.:07:38.

Andy Murray's baby daughter has been named Sophia Olivia.

:07:39.:07:40.

The tennis star didn't disclose the name when his wife,

:07:41.:07:43.

Bookmakers are already offering 500-1 that little Sophia will win

:07:44.:07:47.

Clear skies tonight, chilly. Lovely picture from one of our weather

:07:48.:08:06.

Watchers in Fife. But red skies by night, Shepherd 's delight tomorrow.

:08:07.:08:11.

But tonight it is cold and frosty. The rain we saw last night, still

:08:12.:08:16.

affecting parts of the UK. As the colder Dixon, wintry times. The odd

:08:17.:08:24.

flaky end there but I do, for most of the UK, dry, cold and frosty. As

:08:25.:08:29.

we head through towards tomorrow morning, plenty of dry weather

:08:30.:08:35.

around but showers coming in toward the west and north-west so a risk of

:08:36.:08:39.

ice. But for many, a dry and sunny start, a crisp February morning.

:08:40.:08:46.

These are the temperatures at 8am. Towards the west coast, milder. For

:08:47.:08:53.

many though, a dry sunny start Thursday morning. AQ showers up

:08:54.:08:58.

towards Orkney and Shetland 's and the winds occasionally fresh. As we

:08:59.:09:02.

head through the course of Thursday, we hold onto that theme of showers.

:09:03.:09:07.

Elsewhere dry bright. The best of the sunshine for the north-east and

:09:08.:09:12.

south-east. Westerly winds driving one or two showers towards Edinburgh

:09:13.:09:16.

and five times. As we look across the UK as a whole, plenty of

:09:17.:09:22.

sunshine for England and Wales. Just to hang back, the overnight cloud

:09:23.:09:26.

and rain affecting East Anglia in Kent. In Scotland, those showers,

:09:27.:09:31.

wintry at times, the old rumble of thunder, one or two showers pushing

:09:32.:09:35.

through the central belt as well. Overnight, clear, cold and frosty

:09:36.:09:40.

but thickening cloud and arriving rain. On Friday, fairly wet. The

:09:41.:09:46.

cloud builds and the rain arrives. Wintry across the hills on high

:09:47.:09:51.

ground. By afternoon, that weather front clears, so just AQ showers.

:09:52.:09:54.

Highs of seven or eight.

:09:55.:09:58.
